Aerosol optical depth measurements were conducted during all three Intensive Field Campaigns of BOREAS in 1994 by both groundbased and airborne tracking sun photometers. These measurements documented the highly variable aerosol loadings in the BOREAS study areas: very clear days with optical depths at 525 nm of 0.05 alternated with very hazy days (due to smoke from extensive western forest fires) with optical depths greater than 0.5. The airborne sun photometer showed the aerosol layer extended up to 3.5-4 km. Remote sensing missions were largely constrained to clear days, but some occurred under less optimum conditions. The spectral aerosol optical depths were used to derive aerosol size distributions and other aerosol optical properties useful for atmospheric correction of satellite and aircraft remote sensing imagery. Aerosol scattering phase functions and aerosol single scattering albedoes were calculated from Mie scattering theory using reasonable assumptions for the index of refraction for the aersols. Our atmospheric correction procedure Imagecor used the aerosol optical properties to derive surface radiances at each pixel from Landsat Thematic Mapper data of the southern study area on July 25, 1994. Similar efforts under FIFE showed close agreement between atmospherically corrected surface radiances and helicopter measurements of surface radiance of the same sites. Recently we incorporated calculations of the total downwelling irradiance from the 6S radiative transfer program (which vary little over the entire Landsat scene) to derive surface reflectances from the atmospherically corrected surface radiances. Tests using this procedure with both FIFE and HAPEX data sets show good agreement with ground-measured surface reflectances. Surface reflectances derived from the atmospherically corrected radiances of the July 25th Landsat scene will be compared to surface measurements made in BOREAS'southern study area.

Automated tracking sun photometers were deployed by NASA/Ames Research Center aboard the NASA C-130 aircraft and at a ground site for all three Intensive Field Campaigns (IFCs) of the Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS) in central Saskatchewan, Canada during the summer of 1994. The sun photometer data were used to derive aerosol optical depths for the total atmospheric column above each instrument. The airborne tracking sun photometer obtained data in both the southern and northern study areas at the surface prior to takeoff, along low altitude runs near the ground tracking sun photometer, during ascents to 6-8 km msl, along remote sensing flightlines at altitude, during descents to the surface, and at the surface after landing. The ground sun photometer obtained data from the shore of Candle Lake in the southern area for all cloud-free times. During the first IFC in May-June ascents and descents of the airborne tracking sun photometer indicated the aerosol optical depths decreased steadily from the surface to 3.5 kni where they leveled out at approximately 0.05 (at 525 nm), well below levels caused by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. On a very clear day, May 31st, surface optical depths measured by either the airborne or ground sun photometers approached those levels (0.06-0.08 at 525 nm), but surface optical depths were often several times higher. On June 4th they increased from 0.12 in the morning to 0.20 in the afternoon with some evidence of brief episodes of pollen bursts. During the second IFC surface aerosol optical depths were variable in the extreme due to smoke from western forest fires. On July 20th the aerosol optical depth at 525 nm decreased from 0.5 in the morning to 0.2 in the afternoon; they decreased still further the next day to 0.05 and remained consistently low throughout the day to provide excellent conditions for several remote sensing missions flown that day. Smoke was heavy for the early morning of July 24th but cleared partially by 10:30 local time and cleared fully by 11:30. Heavy smoke characterized the rest of the IFC in both study areas.

The interaction of radiation with the atmosphere is complex and has proved difficult to calculate without reference to measurements made at or close to the time and location of interest. In this paper we describe the use of data from an airborne-tracking sunphotometer mounted on a NASA C-130 aircraft to derive optical properties of the atmospheric aerosols above the aircraft when it is on the ground as well as when the aircraft is at altitude collecting remote sensing data. Furthermore, we describe the use of these optical properties for quantitative atmospheric correction of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and NS001 TM simulator radiances in a simplified radiative transfer model appropriate for each pixel of entire images. Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons of results from use of the model show it provides good to excellent correction for atmospheric effects in TM and NS001 TM simulator data. Quantitative comparisons with measurements of surface radiances measured near the time of the TM overpass showed agreement within a few percent for bands 2, 3, and 4. Band 1 yielded radiances within 15 percent of the surface radiances. We think the simplified atmospheric correction model shows great promise for applying atmospheric corrections to entire images instead of individual points within images to yield surface radiances within a few percent in a computationally efficient manner.

Visible near-infrared sensors mounted on operational satellites now in use do not have on-board full aperture absolute calibration devices. One means of establishing an in-orbit calibration for a satellite sensor is to make simultaneous measurements of a bright, uniform scene along the satellite view vector from a calibrated instrument on board a high altitude aircraft. In the work reported here, aircraft data were recorded over White Sands, New Mexico at satellite overpass time for the LANDSAT-5 Thematic Mapper (TM). A comparison of the coincident aircraft and orbiting satellite data showed the radiometric gain for TM channel 1 had degraded 4.7 percent by August 28, 1985; gains for TM channels 2 and 3 were within 1 percent of prelaunch values.

Data derived from an airborne tracking-sun photometer are used to provide quantitative corrections for atmospheric effects in remotely sensed data. The atmospheric correction involves the validation of radiometric and atmospheric measurements and the application of single scattering approximation which permits the separation of Rayleigh scattering from aerosol scattering. Sun-photometer data are used to generate plots of spectral optical depths, aerosol size distributions, aerosol phase functions, and aerosol single-scattering albedos. The atmospheric correction model and the atmospheric optical properties are incorporated into a program which is applied to two flightlines of data. Atmospheric corrections tested on remotely sensed data permitted the removal of limb brightening, although the results require verification by means of ground measurements.

An airborne Sun photometer was used to measure optical depths in clear atmospheres between the appearances of broken stratus clouds, and the optical depths in the vicinity of smokes. Results show that (human) activities can alter the chemical and optical properties of background atmospheres to affect their spectral optical depths. Effects of water vapor adsorption on aerosol optical depths are apparent, based on data of the water vapor absorption band centered around 940 nm. Smoke optical depths show increases above the background atmosphere by up to two orders of magnitude. When the total optical depths measured through clouds were corrected for molecular scattering and gaseous absorption by subtracting the total optical depths measured through the background atmosphere, the resultant values are lower than those of the background aerosol at short wavelengths. The spectral dependence of these cloud optical depths is neutral, however, in contrast to that of the background aerosol or the molecular atmosphere.

It is pointed out that the Thematic Mapper (TM) instruments aboard the Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 spacecraft have provided the first digital imagery of the earth's surface with a resolution sufficient to distinguish cultural features easily. The present paper provides a description of the results of studies designed to investigate the band-to-band registration, geodetic registration to a map base, and periodic noise. In the eight TM scenes analyzed, the band-to-band registration accuracy was high even before correction, and the correction for the shift between focal planes brought all bands into registration according to tight specifications.

The Landsat Image Data Quality Analysis (LIDQA) Program conducted by NASA has the objective to quantify the performance of the Thematic Mapper (TM) on the Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 spacecraft. The interest in the spatial resolution performance of the TM is partly related to the decrease of the instantaneous field of view (IFOV) from 80 m for the MSS to 30 m for the TM. Studies related to the preflight line spread function (LSF), square wave response (SWR), and theoretical component modeling of the TM system modulation transfer function (MTF) have been conducted. However, the need remains to estimate the MTF of the complete system. The present paper is concerned with investigations related to this task. Attention is given to three approaches for measuring the MTF of the TM system from imagery.

Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data were acquired over an agricultural area in eastern San Joaquin County, California in July, 1984. Cover type information was subsequently collected for all fields along this flight line. The lack of detailed ground data on individual fields, however, limited AIS data analysis to a qualitative comparison of the spectral reflectance curves for a total of nine cover types. Based on this analysis, it appears that cover types with a positive slope in the 1550 to 1700 nm region have a higher spectral response in the 1200 to 1300 nm region compared to those cover types with a negative slope in the 1550 to 1700 nm region. Within cover type, spectral variability was also found to be greater than that between cover types. Given the lack of additional field data, the reason for these differences is a matter of speculation.

An analysis is presented of the magnitude and variability of the effect of the atmosphere on high-altitude Daedalus Airborne Thematic Mapper data. By regressing ATM radiances against ground radiances (from measurements by a helicopter-mounted Barnes Modular Multiband Radiometer), it was possible to account for atmospheric conditions and variability across a 250 km transect in Oregon to estimate coniferous forest leaf area index. The technique permitted scene contrast to be increased, providing an improved capability for measurement of ground feature radiance.

The Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) represents significant improvements in spatial, spectral, and radiometric resolution over the older Multispectral Scanner System (MSS). For the last three years, NASA has conducted the Landsat Image Data Quality Analysis (LIDQA) program to quantify the performance of the TM on the Landsat-4 and 5 spacecraft. As part of this program, analysis of the TM imagery to extract the overall system modulation transfer function (MTF) has been performed. In this paper, the San Mateo Bridge in San Francisco is described as a target for calculation of the line spread function and MTF. The analysis of two TM scenes, one from 12/31/82 and one from 8/12/83, yielded effective-instantaneous-field-of-views (EIFOVs) of 40.8 meters and 48.6 meters, respectively. These values are compared with the 33.8 meter EIFOV predicted by component modelling of the TM sensor, and the differences discussed.

Thematic Mapper data from Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 were examined for band-to-band registration, absolute geodetic registration, periodic noise and spatial resolution. Between focal planes, appreciable misregistrations existed in early data products but were corrected in later data products. The analysis of absolute geodetic registration used only system-corrected data because ground control point-corrected data were unavailable. Geodetic registration errors averaged only 9.7 pixels, less than expected for system-corrected data. Periodic noise at four spatial frequencies was observed in Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper data by using Fourier analysis on small areas over water. Magnitudes of periodic noise components were consistent within a scene. The modulation transfer function was determined for two Landsat-4 scenes. The effective instantaneous field of view was 40.8 meters in one case, and 48.6 meters in the other.
