BACKGROUND Sandstone-type uranium deposits contain a large number of pyrites of different shapes and stages. It is difficult to accurately discriminate the pyrite formed before, during or after the metallogenic period solely by observation of pyrite morphology by mineralogy and electron probe microanalysis. Pyrites during the metallogenic period are important information carriers for the genesis and formation process of uranium deposits, and their accurate identification is of great significance. Previous studies both domestically and internationally have used the LA-MC-ICP-MS method to analyze Pb isotopes, but this method has low analytical precision for low-content Pb samples and it is difficult to obtain 204Pb data. OBJECTIVES To identify metallogenic and non-metallogenic pyrites by in situ micro-scale Pb isotopes. METHODS Femtosecond laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (fs-LA-MC-ICP-MS) was used to determine the lead isotope of pyrite in uranium ores. RESULTS Under the mineralogy microscope, it is clear that the pyrite is related to mineralization and its 206Pb/204Pb ratio is more than ten times or even dozens of times larger than the normal Clark value. 207Pb/204Pb ratio is slightly different, and 208Pb/204Pb ratio is constant. The occurrence of strawberry-shaped pyrites, and non-metallogenic pyrites with uranium minerals growing around them but not interspersed, have normal a 206Pb/204Pb ratio. Pyrites without any contact relationship have no obvious regularity in its Pb isotopes. CONCLUSIONS In-situ micro-scale Pb isotopic difference of pyrites was combined with appropriate observation of mineralogy morphology and occurrence, resulting in pyrites in the metallogenic period being more accurately identified than previously.

Coal is usually found in many sandstone-hosted uranium deposits in western China. However, it remains unclear whether coal organic matter is related to the mineralization of uranium in sandstone. In this study, the organic matter of coal containing lenticular carbon plant strips and carbon clastics was analyzed in different alteration zones in the Daying sandstone-hosted uranium deposit located in the northern Ordos Basin. According to geological and geochemical characters, Daying sandstone can be classified into three alteration zones: the oxidation zone, the transition zone, and the reduction zone. The results are as follows. Firstly, the maceral organic matter of the coal at Daying is mostly vitrinite, indicating the characters of humic coal. The maturity of the organic matter is low, which is in the transitional evolution stage of immature lignite or lignite-long-flame coal. Secondly, the kerogen is mainly type III (humic type), which can be easily transformed into humic acid with a strong adsorption capacity for uranium. Thirdly, the vitrinite reflectance (Ro) of the coal organic matter in the transition zone is higher than that of the other alteration zones. Meanwhile, there are bright white bands in the microscopic components of the organic matter of the coal in the transition zone (mineralized zone) and a certain composition of the sapropelite has strong fluorescence. All three aforementioned phenomena are related to the radioactivity of uranium, and each of them possesses the potential for application in mineral exploration. Fourthly, the extraction and separation of humic substances indicates that humic acid plays a key role in organic matter-related uranium mineralization. In the transition zone, uranium can co-precipitate as a humate, and the transition zone's organic carbon content increases. Therefore, the organic matter in coal contributes to sandstone-hosted uranium mineralization, providing a further guide to prospecting methodologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tensile strength characteristics of unsaturated sands are examined through a combined theoretical and experimental study. The characteristics of tensile strength in all three water retention regimes of pendular, funicular, and capillary are examined. A simple direct tensile strength apparatus is employed to determine tensile strength for sands with a broad range of particle sizes from silty sand to line sand and medium sand over a full range of degree of saturation. Tensile strength characteristic curves (TSCC) are established experimentally for these sands and are used to validate the existing theories for tensile strength in the pendular regime. The TSCC for sand characteristically exhibits two zeros at 0 and near 100% saturation, and two peak values occurring m the pendular and capillary regimes. respectively. A minimum tensile strength is observed in the dense fine sand, indicating that either water bridges or pore pressure contributes exclusively to the tensile strength in the funicular regime of this sand. The maximum tensile strength for the silty sand is 1,448 Pa, the fine sand is 1,416 Pa, and the medium sand is 890 Pa. Comparison between the soil--water characteristic curves obtained for these sands indicates that the peak tensile strength in the capillary regime is highly correlated to the air-entry pressure. Photographs of the failure surfaces clearly delineate distinct geometric characteristics for different water retention regimes. Analysis of the patterns of failure surfaces in different water retention regimes indicates that the effective stress principle is valid for tensile stress failure in unsaturated sands. Abstract Background The molecular etiology of hearing impairment in Chinese has not been thoroughly investigated. Study of GJB2 gene revealed that 30.4% of the patients with hearing loss in Inner Mongolia carried GJB2 mutations. The SLC26A4 gene mutations and relevant phenotype are analyzed in this study. Methods One hundred and thirty-five deaf patients were included. The coding exons of SLC26A4 gene were sequence analyzed in 111 patients, not including 22 patients carrying bi-allelic GJB2 mutations or one patient carrying a known GJB2 dominant mutation as well as one patient with mtDNA 1555A>G mutation. All patients with SLC26A4 mutations or variants were subjected to high resolution temporal bone CT scan and those with confirmed enlarged vestibular aqueduct and/or other inner ear malformation were then given further ultrasound scan of thyroid and thyroid hormone assays. Results Twenty-six patients (19.26%, 26/135) were found carrying SLC26A4 mutation. Among them, 17 patients with bi-allelic SLC26A4 mutations were all confirmed to have EVA or other inner ear malformation by CT scan. Nine patients were heterozygous for one SLC26A4 mutation, including 3 confirmed to be EVA or EVA and Mondini dysplasia by CT scan. The most common mutation, IVS7-2A>G, accounted for 58.14% (25/43) of all SLC26A4 mutant alleles. The shape and function of thyroid were confirmed to be normal by thyroid ultrasound scan and thyroid hormone assays in 19 of the 20 patients with EVA or other inner ear malformation except one who had cystoid change in the right side of thyroid. No Pendred syndrome was diagnosed. Conclusion In Inner Mongolia, China, mutations in SLC26A4 gene account for about 12.6% (17/135) of the patients with hearing loss. Together with GJB2 (23/135), SLC26A4 are the two most commonly mutated genes causing deafness in this region. Pendred syndrome is not detected in this deaf population. We established a new strategy that detects SLC26A4 mutations prior to the temporal bone CT scan to find EVA and inner ear malformation patients. This model has a unique advantage in epidemiologic study of large deaf population.
