Supercritical flow bedforms are important elements of sedimentary environments, but their internal three-dimensional structure has been elusive due to seismic imaging limitations. Here, we present high-resolution 3D seismic reflection data from Formosa Ridge - a ridge between two canyons that incise into the northeastern South China Sea margin. The ridge consists of 300 m-thick submarine deposits including sediment waves that are manifested as crescentic depressions surrounded by elevated walls on the paleo-seafloor. Cross-sectional profiles show scour fills that turn into step-like sediment waves further downstream. These bedforms are 470–1,370 m long and 30–140 m high. The 3D seismic data clearly show the step-like bedforms that may be misinterpreted as faults or slumps on data with lower resolution. Despite exhibiting negative paleo-seafloor relief, they are overall depositional structures and have constructed at least part of Formosa Ridge. The bedforms’ morphology and upslope migration suggest that they are the continuum of partially depositional to fully depositional cyclic steps formed by bottom currents travelling, based on a series of simple calculations, at least 2 m/s. These currents are able to transport sediments with grain sizes up to coarse sand and such dynamic processes might impact seafloor infrastructure safety, oil and gas reservoir systems, and the functioning of benthic ecosystems in similar settings.

Temperature is used to trace ocean density variations, and reveals internal waves and turbulent motions in the deep ocean, called ‘internal motions.’ Ambient temperature detected by geophysical differential pressure gauges (DPGs) may provide year-long, complementary observations. Here, we use data from four DPGs fixed on the ocean bottom and a high-resolution temperature sensor (T-sensor) 13 m above the seafloor as a square-kilometer array deployed offshore ~ 50 km east of Taiwan facing the open Pacific Ocean to examine the impact of temperature on DPG signals related to internal motions. The DPG signals correlate with T-sensor temperature variations between 0.002 and 0.1 mHz, but have time shifts partially caused by slow thermal conduction from the ambient seafloor to the DPG chamber and partially by internal motion propagation time across the array. Applying beamforming-frequency-wavenumber analysis and linear regression to the arrayed T-sensor and DPG data, we estimate the propagating slowness of the internal motions to be between 0.5 and 7.4 s m−1 from the northwest and northeast quadrants of the array. The Formosa Ridge cold seep is among the first documented active seeps on the northern South China Sea passive margin slope. Although this system has been the focus of scientific studies for decades, the geological factors controlling gas release are not well understood due to a lack of constraints of the subsurface structure and seepage history. Here, we use high-resolution 3D seismic data to image stratigraphic and structural relationships associated with fluid expulsion, which provide spatio-temporal constraints on the gas hydrate system at depth and methane seepage at modern and paleo seafloors. Gas has accumulated beneath the base of gas hydrate stability to a critical thickness, causing hydraulic fracturing, propagation of a vertical gas conduit, and morphological features (mounds) at paleo-seafloor horizons. These mounds record multiple distinct gas migration episodes between 300,000 and 127,000 years ago, separated by periods of dormancy. Episodic seepage still seems to occur at the present day, as evidenced by two separate fronts of ascending gas imaged within the conduit. We propose that episodic seepage is associated with enhanced seafloor sedimentation. The increasing overburden leads to an increase in effective horizontal stress that exceeds the gas pressure at the top of the gas reservoir. As a result, the conduit closes off until the gas reservoir is replenished to a new (greater) critical thickness to reopen hydraulic fractures. Our results provide intricate detail of long-term methane flux through sub-seabed seep systems, which is important for assessing its impact on seafloor and ocean biogeochemistry. Seafloor heat flow provides information about the thermal evolution of the lithosphere, the magnitude and timing of volcanic activity, and hydrothermal circulation patterns. In the central Gulf of California, the Guaymas Basin is part of a young marginal spreading rift system that experiences high sedimentation (1–5 km/Myr) and widespread magmatic intrusions in the axial troughs and the off-axis regions. Heat flow variations record magmatic and sedimentary processes affecting the thermal evolution of the basin. Here, we present new seismic evidence of a widespread bottom-simulating reflection (BSR) in the northwestern Guaymas Basin. Using the BSR depths and thermal conductivity measurements, we determine geothermal gradient and surface heat flow variations. The BSR-derived heat flow values are less than the conductive lithospheric heat flow predictions for mid-oceanic ridges. They suggest that high sedimentation (0.3–1 km/Myr) suppresses the lithospheric heat flow. In the central and southeastern regions of the basin, the BSR-derived geothermal gradient increases as the intruded magmatic units reach shallower subsurface depths. Developing new ways to observe tsunami contributes to tsunami research. Tidal and deep-ocean gauges are typically used for coastal and offshore observations. Recently, tsunami-induced ground tilts offer a new possibility. The ground tilt signal accompanied by 2010 Mw 8.8 Chilean earthquake were observed at a tiltmeter network in Japan. However, tiltmeter stations are usually not as widely installed as broadband seismometers in other countries. Here, we studied broadband seismic records from Japan’s F-net and found ground tilt signals consistent with previously published tiltmeter dataset for this particular tsunamic event. Similar waveforms can also be found in broadband seismic networks in other countries, such as Taiwan, as well as an ocean-bottom seismometer. We documented a consistent time sequence of evolving back-azimuth directions of the tsunami waves at different stages of tsunami propagation through beamforming-frequency–wavenumber analysis and particle-motion analysis; the outcomes are consistent with the tsunami propagation model provided by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. These results shown that dense broadband seismic networks can provide a useful complementary dataset, in addition to tiltmeter arrays and other networks, to study or even monitor tsunami propagation using arrayed methods.

Estimates of the sub-seabed fluid flow rates are important for understanding hydrological budgets, biogeochemical cycles, and physical properties of the sediments. Fluid flow rates and directions, however, are difficult to measure, particularly beneath the seafloor. We developed a rapid method to estimate regional fluid migration rates using an extensive database of seismic reflection profiles taken offshore SW Taiwan. We observe bottom-simulating reflector (BSR) that deflect towards the seafloor near thrust faults that indicate localized heat flow variations. At these sites, advecting warm pore fluids transport heat to shallower depths and force the BSR shallower. Our 2-D steady-state numerical method quantifies the fluid flow rates required to cause such thermal anomalies. We found that fluid flow rates near the trench of the accretionary wedge range between 0.1 to 16 m3 yr-1 m-1, with slower and faster rates generally associated with slope basin discontinuities and faults, respectively. To evaluate the fluid pattern evolution from subduction to collision, we studied three transects: one along the Manila subduction zone in the south and two in Taiwan’s initial collision zone in the north. We quantified the fluid budget and partitioning of fluid flow between focused discharge through faults and diffusive flow through the wedge. Faults in Taiwan’s accretionary wedge capture on average 25% of the total dewatering flux in the younger subduction zone and 38.5% in the tectonically mature collision zone. Our method provides estimates of fluid migration rates along convergent plate boundaries, and contributes to our understanding of focused fluid flow processes in many other regions.

Abstract Pointer Ridge is a gas hydrate prospect on the South China Sea continental slope offshore SW Taiwan. It is characterized by densely distributed bottom simulating reflections (BSRs), active gas seepage, and potential sandy gas hydrate reservoirs. To understand how the fluids have migrated toward the seafloor, and the role of geological processes in the gas hydrate system, we have collected and analyzed high-quality 2D and 3D reflection seismic data. We first mapped the spatial distribution of the BSRs, and interpreted a major normal fault, Pointer Ridge Fault (PR Fault). The NE-SW trending fault dips to the east, and separates the erosional regime to the west from the depositional regime to the east. One active vent site was identified directly above the PR Fault, while another is located on a topographic high to the west of the fault. On the hanging block of the fault we found at least one major unconformity. The seismic data indicate refilled channels with coarser-grained sediments in the hanging wall of the normal fault. Seismic attribute analysis shows subsurface fluid conduits and potential gas hydrate reservoirs. We propose two types of gas chimneys, which are separated by the fault. Gas plumes derived from hydroacoustic data are mostly from the footwall block of the fault. We infer that fluid flow is more active in the erosional environment compared to the depositional one, and that this is the result of reduced overburden. The methane-bearing fluids migrate upward along the PR Fault and chimneys and form hydrates above the base of the gas hydrate stability zone. Based on seismic interpretation and seismic attribute analysis, we postulate that the channel infill constitutes the most promising hydrate reservoirs in this geological setting. In the surveyed area of Pointer Ridge these channels occur mainly below the gas hydrate stability zone.

The northern part of the South China Sea is characterized by widespread occurrence of bottom simulating reflectors (BSR) indicating the presence of marine gas hydrate. Because the area covers both a tectonically inactive passive margin and the termination of a subduction zone, the influence of tectonism on the dynamics of gas hydrate systems can be studied in this region. Geophysical data show that there are multiple thrust faults on the active margin while much fewer and smaller faults exist in the passive margin. This tectonic difference matches with a difference in the geophysical characteristics of the gas hydrate systems. High hydrate saturation derived from ocean bottom seismometer data and controlled source electromagnetic data and conspicuous high‐amplitude reflections in P‐Cable 3D seismic data above the BSR are found in the anticlinal ridges of the active margin. In contrast all geophysical evidence for the passive margin points to normal to low hydrate saturations. Geochemical analyses of gas samples collected at seep sites on the active margin show methane with heavy δ13C isotope composition, while gas collected at the passive margin shows light carbon isotope composition. Thus, we interpret the passive margin as a typical gas hydrate province fuelled by biogenic production of methane and the active margin gas hydrate system as a system that is fuelled not only by biogenic gas production but also by additional advection of thermogenic methane from the subduction system.

This paper aims to understand the hydrothermal sites near the Yonaguni Knoll IV in the Okinawa Trough, and to develop new techniques to study fluid flow patterns for hydrothermal systems and their impact on ore deposits on the seafloor. Hydraulic parameters are important for hydrothermal system studies, but in-situ measurements of fluid migration rates are difficult. Hydrothermal fluids can reach several hundred degrees Celsius, temperatures high enough to perturb hydrothermal fields and pore water migration patterns. Using in-situ temperature data as constraints, we model and synthesize 1-D and 3-D cylindrical hydrothermal models to fit the spatial variations of observed temperature fields. The 1-D modeling uses Péclet number analysis along the conduit. We also construct a 3-D cylindrical model to estimate the temperature and fluid velocity fields using a finite element software. All domains are set to be porous to allow the fluid to flow. The simulation is run until it reaches a semi steadystate solution, allowing both the temperature and velocity fields to stabilize. Results show the dimension of the thermal anomaly zone is likely controlled by advective heat transfer along the vent due to upward fluid flow. We estimate a Péclet number of -1.6, and the vertical fluid flow velocities at these sites are high, approximately 106 m s-1, that is, about 100 m yr-1. This is a spatially averaged estimate over tens to hundreds of meters and does not take into account finer-scale venting, which may be very heterogeneous. The results of this work may help estimate the quantity of metal elements transported through pore fluid migration at modern hydrothermal sites.

Large amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, are stored in hydrates beneath the seafloor. Sea level changes can trigger massive methane release into the ocean. It is not clear, however, whether surficial seafloor processes can cause comparable discharge. Previously, fluid migration was difficult to study due to a lack of spatially dense seismic and thermal observations. Here we examine a gas hydrate site at Four‐Way‐Closure Ridge off SW Taiwan using a high‐resolution 3‐D seismic cube, together with bottom‐simulating reflections (BSRs) mapped in the cube, a thermal probe data set, and 3‐D thermal modeling results. We document, on a scale of tens of meters, the interaction between surficial sedimentary processes, fluid flow, and a dynamic gas hydrate system. Fluid migrates upward through dipping permeable strata in the limb, the slope basin, and along thrust faults and ridge‐top normal faults. The seismic data also reveal several double BSRs that underlie seabed sedimentary sliding and depositional features. Abrupt changes in subsurface pressure and temperature due to the rapid seabed sedimentary processes can cause a rapid shift of the base of the gas hydrate stability zone. This shift may be either downward or upward and would result in the accumulation or dissociation of hydrate in sediments sandwiched by the double BSRs, respectively. We propose that dynamic surficial processes on the seafloor together with shallow focused fluid flow affect hydrate distribution and saturation at depth and may even result in methane expulsion into the ocean if such localized features are common along convergent plate boundaries.

Turbulent mixing in the deep ocean is not well understood. The breaking of internal waves on sloped seafloor topography can generate deep-sea turbulence. However, it is difficult to measure turbulence comprehensively due to its multi-scale processes, in addition to flow–flow and flow–topography interactions. Dense, high-resolution spatiotemporal coverage of observations may help shed light on turbulence evolution. Here, we present turbulence observations from four broadband ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs) and a 200-m vertical thermistor string (T-string) in a footprint of 1 × 1 km to characterize turbulence induced by internal waves at a depth of 3000 m on a Pacific continental slope. Correlating the OBS-calculated time derivative of kinetic energy and the T-string-calculated turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate, we propose that the OBS-detected signals were induced by near-seafloor turbulence. Strong disturbances were detected during a typhoon period, suggesting large-scale inertial waves breaking with upslope transport speeds of 0.2–0.5 m s−1. Recent work shows erosion reduces vertical normal stress, triggering thrust earthquakes. Whether deposition will inhibit earthquake triggering, or favor different types of earthquakes is not clear. Here we address this question using earthquake catalogs, earthquake focal mechanisms, and a point-load stress transfer model to study induced seismicity at the Tsaoling impoundment after the 1999 Mw7.6 Chi-Chi earthquake. This impoundment formed when a river was blocked by the mainshock-induced landslide. Temporally, we found a marked increase and decrease in earthquake activities in this location at the beginning and end of this impoundment life cycle. Spatially, the number of earthquakes decreased away from the impoundment in a pattern correlated with surface point load models based on both the Boussinesq and Westergaard equations. Using first motions and SH to P amplitude ratios, we derived focal mechanisms, and found the point source on surface weakens the strike-slip and normal fault planes mostly occurred during our study period. Some of the Chi-Chi aftershocks not explained by dislocation stress transfer studies can be explained by such load-induced seismicity. Previous studies show earthquakes can affect surficial geological processes; this study suggests that surficial processes can create positive loading that feedbacks and triggers seismicity.

This study analyzes both 2D and 3D seismic images around the Palm Ridge area offshore of southwestern Taiwan to understand how the deformation front shifted westward and how tectonic activities interact with submarine canyon paths in the transition area between the active and passive margins. Palm Ridge is a submarine ridge that developed on the passive China continental margin by down-dip erosion of several tributaries of Penghu Canyon; it extends eastward across the deformation front into the submarine Taiwan accretionary wedge. The presence of proto-thrusts that are located west of the frontal thrust implies that the compressional stress field has advanced westward due to the convergence of the Philippine Sea Plate and Eurasian Plate. Since the deformation front is defined as the location of the most frontal contractional structure, no significant contractional structure should appear west of it. We thus suggest moving the location of the previously mapped deformation front farther west to where the westernmost proto-thrust lies. High-resolution seismic and bathymetric data reveal that the directions of the paleo-submarine canyons run transverse to the present slope dip, while the present submarine canyons head down slope in the study area. We propose that this might be the result of the westward migration of the deformation front that changed the paleo-bathymetry and thus the canyon path directions. The interactions of down-slope processes and active tectonics control the canyon paths in our study area.

During opening of a new ocean magma intrudes into the surrounding sedimentary basins. Heat provided by the intrusions matures the host rock creating metamorphic aureoles potentially releasing large amounts of hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons may migrate to the seafloor in hydrothermal vent complexes in sufficient volumes to trigger global warming, e.g. during the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Mound structures at the top of buried hydrothermal vent complexes observed in seismic data off Norway were previously interpreted as mud volcanoes and the amount of released hydrocarbon was estimated based on this interpretation. Here, we present new geophysical and geochemical data from the Gulf of California suggesting that such mound structures could in fact be edifices constructed by the growth of black-smoker type chimneys rather than mud volcanoes. We have evidence for two buried and one active hydrothermal vent system outside the rift axis. The vent releases several hundred degrees Celsius hot fluids containing abundant methane, mid-ocean-ridge-basalt (MORB)-type helium, and precipitating solids up to 300 m high into the water column. Our observations challenge the idea that methane is emitted slowly from rift-related vents. The association of large amounts of methane with hydrothermal fluids that enter the water column at high pressure and temperature provides an efficient mechanism to transport hydrocarbons into the water column and atmosphere, lending support to the hypothesis that rapid climate change such as during the PETM can be triggered by magmatic intrusions into organic-rich sedimentary basins.

Within the accretionary prism offshore SW Taiwan, widespread gas hydrate accumulations are postulated to occur based on the presence of a bottom simulating reflection. Methane seepage, however, is also widespread at accretionary ridges offshore SW Taiwan and may indicate a significant loss of methane bypassing the gas hydrate system. Four Way Closure Ridge, located in 1,500 m water depth, is an anticlinal ridge that would constitute an ideal trap for methane and consequently represents a site with good potential for gas hydrate accumulations. The analysis of high-resolution bathymetry, deep-towed sidescan sonar imagery, high-resolution seismic profiling and towed video observations of the seafloor shows that Four Way Closure Ridge is and has been a site of intensive methane seepage. Continuous seepage is mainly evidenced by large accumulations of authigenic carbonate precipitates, which appear to be controlled by the creation of fluid pathways through faulting. Consequently, Four Way Closure Ridge is not a closed system in terms of fluid migration and seepage. A conceptual model of the evolution of gas hydrates and seepage at accretionary ridges suggests that seepage is common and may be a standard feature during the geological development of ridges in accretionary prisms. The observation of seafloor seepage alone is therefore not a reliable indicator of exploitable gas hydrate accumulations at depth.

Highlights • We interpret the Four Way Closure Ridge (FWCR) and the Ridge A as a set of bi-vergent folds, a detachment fold and a trishear fault propagation, which formed sequentially over a strong detachment. • We suggest a quantification of the strain compaction of Ridge A and FWCR, finding correlation of dilation and porosity lost, with the variation of the physical properties—increase in resistivity and seismic velocity—measured by Berndt et al. (2019). • We conclude that the sourced fluids from the calculated mechanical compaction alone could not explain the observed hydrate accumulations in the FWCR. Additional sources, possibly from depth, are required. • Using growth strata as constraints, we have conduced kinematic structural modeling and finite strain calculations. Such combination of analyses might become helpful for research on gas hydrate and other km-scale structural geology in active margins. Abstract Understanding the structural evolution of complex convergent plate boundaries could contribute to linking the anticipated fluid production and transportation at depth to the measured amounts of fluid stored in hydrate methane. To better understand fluid behavior within a complex convergent boundary, we propose an evolution model for a set of doubly plunging, oppositely-verging structures referred to as Ridge A and the Four-Way Closure Ridge (FWCR), located offshore southwestern Tawian. The structures exhibit 1) Initial deformation along a decollement forming a seaward (westward)-verging detachment fold, followed by 2) a landward(eastward)-verging fault propagation fold (trishear) about 8 km east of the detachment fold, and 3) a westward-verging low-angle thrusting modifying the previous structures. Furthermore, finite strain analyses based on the kinematic model suggest high pore space reduction between the detachment and fault propagation folds. The volume of methane possibly expelled during the pore space reduction is not enough to explain the high hydrocarbon concentration necessary for hydrate formation. Kinematic modeling along with finite strain analyses support the possibility of deep sourced fluid migration along such bi-vergent structures at this hydrate-rich site.

The impact of large atmospheric disturbances on deep benthic communities is not well known quantitatively. Observations are scarce but may reveal specific processes leading to turbulent disturbances. Here, we present high-resolution deep-ocean observations to study potential turbulent mixing by large atmospheric disturbances. We deployed an array of 100-Hz sampling-rate geophysical broadband Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBSs) on the seafloor. Within the footprint of this array we also deployed an oceanographic 1-Hz sampling-rate vertical temperature sensor string covering the water phase between 7 and 207 m above the seafloor at about 3000 m depth off eastern Taiwan between June 2017 and April 2018. All instruments registered Category 4 cyclone Typhoon Talims passage northeast of the array one day ahead of the cyclones closest approach when the cyclones eye was more than 1,000 km away. For 10 days, a group of near-inertial motions appeared most clearly in temperature. The registration reflects the importance of barotropic response to cyclones and the propagation of inertio-gravity waves in weak density stratification. In addition to internal tides, these waves drove turbulent overturns larger than 200 m that were concurrently registered by OBSs. The turbulent signals were neither due to seismic activity nor to ocean-surface wave action. Cyclones can generate not only microseisms and earth hums, as well as turbulence in the water column, producing additional ground motions. We have conducted Taiwan’s first groundwater temperature earthquake precursory and coseismic signal study using totally 8-month time series of groundwater temperature from two monitoring wells in Eastern Taiwan. We applied Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) analysis to identify possible precursory signals, with periods ranging from one to ten minutes, and duration of tens of hours, that occurred one to three days before Mw > 4.7 earthquakes. These signals are not correlated with atmospheric and pumping processes. The precursors are sensitive to an earthquake within an epicentral distance that is about 20- to 25-time of the earthquake rupture length. With this limited dataset, we found the rates of false positives and false negatives are 16.7% and 28.6%, respectively. Exact physical processes that generate such signals are unclear and additional data are needed. But we propose that real-time groundwater temperature monitoring has potentials to become a low cost but beneficial way to complement other earthquake precursory projects for more robust short-term earthquake forecasting

Double frequency (DF) microseisms (0.12–0.4 Hz) are believed to be generated by nonlinear interaction between ocean waves traveling in opposite directions, and are often more energetic than the single frequency microseisms. Based on the traveling time for long period (LP) DF microseismic signals generated by typhoon Shanshan to the closest seismic stations, the mean velocity is estimated to be on the order of 20 m/s suggesting that the LPDF signals are generated near the coastal area. The typhoon intensity is estimated as a function of time. It seems to show a cubic power dependence on the maximum wind speed, in agreement with the previous finding based on data at 10–50 Hz.

Although the Lichi melange has been studied intensively over the last decade, its enigmatic nature has generated debates regarding its origin and evolution. Two prominent models have been proposed to explain the Lichi melange: the olistostrome model with slumping sediments and the tectonic collision model with intensive shearing. Neither model can explain what causes the interpreted slumping and complex faulting processes for the sediments. Here, we study the Lichi melange using a time–space equivalence approach, in which the tectonics of the offshore continuation of the Lichi melange should represent an earlier stage in its evolution. Our study of marine multichannel seismic data suggested that the backthrusts in the accretionary prism propagate arcward above and within the deforming forearc and arc basement to incorporate the sediment and basement materials into the rear of the accretionary prism. Therefore, we proposed the “retrowedge evolution model” whose novel key feature is that the irregular topography of the arc basement affects the taper angle of the retrowedge. The retrowedge has a greater taper than the minimum taper of the prowedge, so the slope can be steeper, and thus favors gravitational failure. Such processes would generate complex faulting and slumping processes in the backthrusted forearc ridge and basin. In sum, this retrowedge model reconciles the mixture of slumping and faulting processes found in the Lichi melange.

Fluid migration patterns are important for understanding gas hydrate and hydrocarbon systems. However, conducting experiments on or below the seafloor is difficult because crustal fluid flow rates are usually very slow, so long term observations are needed. Temperature can be used as a good tracer for studying fluid flows. Temperatures derived from bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs) might help to understand fluid migration patterns in shallow marine sediments. In this study, we studied 2D fluid flow patterns in two potential gas hydrate provinces offshore southwestern Taiwan: the Yung-An Ridge in the active margin and Formosa Ridge in the passive margin. We used 2D bathymetry, average seafloor temperatures and regional geothermal gradients measured by thermal probes, as constraints to construct 2D theoretical conductive temperature fields using finite element methods. We then compared the BSR-based temperature with the theoretical conductive temperature field. The results show a temperature discrepancy attributed to advective heat transfer due to fluid migration. For the Yung-An Ridge, the BSR-based temperatures are about 2 °C higher than the model: Especially in (1) near a fault zone, (2) under the eastern flank where there are strong seismic reflectors in a pseudo-3D seismic dataset, and (3) near a fissure zone. For the Formosa Ridge, our results showed a distinct decrease in temperatures around the southern peak of the ridge, where an active gas plume was found. BSR-based temperatures predict on average 2 °C lower than the model. At these two sites, the shallow temperature fields are strongly affected by 2D bathymetry. However, new insights regarding fluid flow patterns can be obtained using this model approach.

Highlights • A stack of four BSRs were identified in levee deposits of the Danube deep-sea fan. • The multiple BSRs are not caused by overpressure compartments. • The multiple BSRs reflect stages of stable sealevel lowstands during glacial times. • Gas underneath the previous GHSZ does not start to migrate for thousands of years. Abstract High-resolution 2D seismic data reveal the character and distribution of up to four stacked bottom simulating reflectors (BSR) within the channel-levee systems of the Danube deep-sea fan. The theoretical base of the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) calculated from regional geothermal gradients and salinity data is in agreement with the shallowest BSR. For the deeper BSRs, BSR formation due to overpressure compartments can be excluded because the necessary gas column would exceed the vertical distance between two overlying BSRs. We show instead that the deeper BSRs are likely paleo BSRs caused by a change in pressure and temperature conditions during different limnic phases of the Black Sea. This is supported by the observation that the BSRs correspond to paleo seafloor horizons located in a layer between a buried channel-levee system and the levee deposits of the Danube channel. The good match of the observed BSRs and the BSRs predicted from deposition of these sediment layers indicates that the multiple BSRs reflect stages of stable sealevel lowstands possibly during glacial times. The observation of sharp BSRs several 10,000 of years but possibly up to 300,000 yr after they have left the GHSZ demonstrates that either hydrate dissociation does not take place within this time frame or that only small amounts of gas are released that can be transported by diffusion. The gas underneath the previous GHSZ does not start to migrate for several thousands of years.

To study factors that affect reliability of the derived vertical rotational ground motions (about vertical axis) from translational array waveforms, we have conducted a field test using explosion. The dataset was collected on March 4, 2008 from an active source experiment of the Taiwan Geodynamics Research project (TAIGER, 2008), in which 750 kg of explosives were set off about 500 m away from a specially designed seismic array in free field consisting of 8 tri-axial rotational sensors, 13 tri-axial accelerometers, and 12 six-channel, 24-bit dataloggers with GPS receivers. Our results show that the waveform fits were greatly improved when the explosion-induced crustal strains were less than 2 � 10 � 5 for our station configuration. As a result, our modeling for the large amplitude part of the mainshock was not entirely successful. However, we have successfully recovered the first order features of the later part of the vertical rotational ground motions using translational velocity waveforms in the 0.5–20 Hz bandwidth using the Spudich and Fletcher’s procedure (2009). Moreover, we used a modified Jaeger’s (1969) formula and derived similar rotational synthetics. We found that the best rotational rate waveform fits were derived using a station configuration of a dense, small-aperture, translational array combined with a few largeoffset stations. A small-aperture array is needed to fulfill the uniform rotation assumption. However, inverting data from an array of small spatial dimension requires waveforms of high signal to noise ratio and high sampling rates. Surprisingly, large-offset translation stations provided additional constraints in time and space, helping to fit the low frequency waveforms. Using the inverted result, we forward predicted the vertical translational waveforms not used in the inversion and got excellent fits. This suggests that the inverted results are of good quality for predicting the complete translational ground motions, even though only horizontal components were used in the inversion. Array-derived or directly measured rotational ground motions can be used to predict translational ground motions in the near-by region. Lessons learned from this study could be helpful for future studies using translational ground motions to derive dynamic ground strains, tilts, and torsions.
