13. Qigong Master: A Qigong-Based Attention Training Game Using Action Recognition and Balance Analysis

Abstract

Baduanjin is a type of martial art that is aimed at the development and health of the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects. It emphasizes on gentle movements, relaxed yet disciplined, and training of mental concentration through relaxation. In order to make Baduanjin attention training more effective and easier, we proposed a novel Baduanjin-based attention training game that instructs the subject to practice Baduanjin using virtual reality and motion analysis. Through a virtual instructor who demonstrates a series of Baduanjin actions, the subject is asked to follow the instructor's movement at any time. Meanwhile, the 3-D position of the subject's body joints is collected by a motion capture device for further analysis using a deep learning model to evaluate the order correctness and precision of the Baduanjin actions. In addition, transfer learning technique is used to solve the problem of small size of Baduanjin data. Preliminary tests with 20 normal individuals showed that the recognition accuracy of the Baduanjin actions reached nearly 97%, and the balance analysis reflected the position change of the body center of mass to a certain extent. We also compared the performance of the model with and without pretraining to demonstrate the importance of transfer learning. The result of these explorations shows the feasibility of this prototype system as an attention training system and its potential as an assistive treatment option. In conclusion, we not only created the virtual instructor that could provide accurate movement demonstration, but also collected objective action data for more accurate balance analysis to provide appropriate feedback.

Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been proposed as revolutionary applications for the next generation, especially in education. Many VR applications have been designed to promote learning via virtual environments and 360° video. However, due to the strict requirements of end-to-end latency and network bandwidth, numerous VR applications using 360° video streaming may not achieve a high-quality experience. To address this issue, we propose relying on tile-based 360° video streaming and the caching capacity in Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) to predict the field of view (FoV) in the head-mounted device, then deliver the required tiles. Prefetching tiles in MEC can save the bandwidth of the backend link and support multiple users. Smart caching decisions may reduce the memory at the edge and compensate for the FoV prediction error. For instance, caching whole tiles at each small cell has a higher storage cost compared to caching one small cell that covers multiple users. In this paper, we define a tile selection, caching, and FoV coverage model as the Tile Selection and Caching Problem and propose a heuristic algorithm to solve it. Using a dataset of real users' head movements, we compare our algorithm to the Least Recently Used (LRU) and Least Frequently Used (LFU) caching policies. The results show that our proposed approach improves FoV coverage by 30% and reduces caching costs by 25% compared to LFU and LRU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In 802.11-based wireless local area networks (WLANs), it is difficult to simultaneously attain both high throughput and fairness for multirate traffic. There is a performance anomaly when there are stations whose data rates are much lower than the other stations, in which the aggregate throughput of the high-rate stations drastically degrades. The problem of maximizing the total throughput while maintaining time fairness among the competing stations was studied previously by the same authors. However, our previous solution sacrificed the throughput of low-rate stations. In this paper, we extend our previous work by solving the same optimization problem while maintaining both time fairness and throughput fairness. The optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem. The two fairness constraints are maintained by means of changing the channel access probability and transmission time among the competing stations, which can be realized by adjusting their minimum contention window sizes and medium access control (MAC) frame sizes, respectively. A penalty function accompanied with a gradient-based approach is used to solve the problem, and its effectiveness is verified by computational experiments. The proposed solution is also compared with our previous solution in terms of convergence speed and total throughput. Index Terms--Fairness, IEEE 802.11, multirate, optimization, penalty function.

Abstract

Flexible multimedia broadcast/multicast services such as mobile auction and advertisements are vital services for future mobile ad hoc networks. A great number of applications rely on a reliable and efficient medium access control (MAC) layer broadcast. The current IEEE 802.11 broadcast protocol based on carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance does not offer any MAC layer recovery on broadcast frames. Consequently, unexpected lost frames may deteriorate the quality of broadcast/multicast services. Previous protocols extended request-to-send, clear-to-send, and acknowledgement to enhance the broadcast reliability. However, they still suffered from the hidden terminal problem and the excessive retransmission problem at the same time. In this paper, we first formulate the excessive retransmission problem as an optimization problem and show that it is NP-hard even if the upper layer service is periodical beacon exchange. An approximation algorithm with a guaranteed approximation ratio is also suggested. Then, a reliable and efficient MAC layer broadcast protocol, which is named broadcast protocol with busy tone (BPBT), is proposed. BPBT applies a busy tone to solve the hidden terminal problem and applies the proposed approximation algorithm to solve the excessive retransmission problem. Finally, BPBT is compared with previous protocols for performance evaluation by simulation. Index Terms--Ad hoc network, approximation algorithm, broadcast, busy tone, medium access control (MAC).
