The chaotic behavior of the Solar System prevents the prediction of the precise evolution of the planetary secular frequencies. Here we use four cyclostratigraphic sequences, ∼259 Ma Wujiaping Formation, ∼455 Ma Pingliang Formation, ∼655 Ma Datangpo Formation and ∼2,465 Ma Dales Gorge Member, and Bayesian inversion to provide powerful geological constraints to this problem. The inversion provides constraining estimates for the Solar System fundamental secular frequencies g1, g2, g3, g4, and g5, and the Earth's precession rate k from 105.26 ± 2.68 (2σ) arcseconds/year at ∼2,465 Ma to 55.86 ± 2.60 (2σ) arcseconds/year at ∼259 Ma. Stochastic monotone interpolation enables the reconstruction of Earth‐Moon distance from 2.5 billion years to the present. Calculation of tidal dissipation supports the ocean model before 1.4 Ga, but is outside the error range after ∼1.8 Ga, suggesting lower tidal dissipation in the early Proterozoic Eon, and a possible high value in the early Paleozoic. Plain Language Summary: The chaotic history of the Solar System imposes unknown uncertainties on the fundamental secular frequencies of the planets over most of geologic time. This is complicated by a lack of knowledge about the evolution of Earth‐Moon distance, Earth's length of day and tidal dissipation. Geological evidence provides powerful constraints on all of these parameters. To shed light on the parameters, here we carry out Bayesian inversion of fundamental secular frequencies and Earth precession rate on four cyclostratigraphic sequences, and stochastic monotone interpolation to reconstruct Earth‐Moon distance from 2.5 billion years ago to present. From these results we estimate the Earth's tidal dissipation variation, which we compare with theoretical models. Our results provide critical geological constraints for paleotidal simulation, and shine a light on the unique potential of cyclostratigraphy to constrain Earth‐Moon system history across geologic time. The Late Ordovician Pingliang Formation in the Guanzhuang section, located in the south‐western Ordos Basin, North China, contains several K‐bentonite layers, which are important for understanding the tectonic evolution of the south‐western Ordos Basin. This study provides new geochemical and SIMS U–Pb geochronological data for the K‐bentonites to establish the Ordovician high‐resolution chronostratigraphic framework for the Ordos Basin and to provide temporal constraints of major volcanic–magmatic activity. K‐bentonites in the succession yield U–Pb zircon ages of 457.6 ± 3.8 Ma and 454.8 ± 3.8 Ma (2σ analytical uncertainty), showing a depositional age in the Sandbian Stage (Late Ordovician). The result is consistent with the biostratigraphic and astrochronologic framework, achieving the intercalibration of different dating methods. The discrimination diagrams of whole‐rock Na2O+K2O against SiO2 and Zr/TiO2 against Nb/Y and Th/Yb against Nb/Yb and Th‐Hf‐Ta indicate that the K‐bentonites have obvious arc affinities. Based on the geological background, we conclude that the K‐bentonites in the south‐western Ordos Basin were mainly deposited during the development of the North Qilian‐North Qinling volcanic arc in the Sandbian. A continuous terrestrial succession was recovered from the Songke‐2 (SK‐2) borehole in the Songliao Basin, Northeastern China. This borehole provides a unique material for further research on the continental paleoclimate during Cretaceous greenhouse period, following a series of achievements of the Songke‐1 (SK‐1) core. In this study, thorium (Th) logging data were chosen as a paleoclimate proxy to conduct a detailed cyclostratigraphic analysis. The Th series varies quasi‐periodically; power spectra and evolutionary fast Fourier transformation (FFT) analysis reveal significant cycles in the Quantou (K2q), Qingshankou (K2qn), Yaojia (Ky and Nenjiang (K2n) formations. The ratio of cycle wavelengths in these stratigraphic units is approximately 20:5:2:1, corresponding to long orbital eccentricity (405 kyr), short orbital eccentricity (100 kyr), obliquity (37 kyr), and precession cycles (22.5 kyr and 18.4 kyr). The durations of the K2n, K2y, K2qn and K2q are estimated as 6.97, 1.83, 5.30 and 4.52 Myr, respectively, based on the constructed ∼18.62 Myr "floating" astronomical time scale (ATS). Comparison of the durations between the SK‐1 s and SK‐2 boreholes exhibits a slight difference of 0.06 Myr and 0.459 Myr for K2qn and K2y. Nevertheless, our ATS of K2n supports the chronostratigraphic frame constructed by the CA‐ID‐TIMS data of the SK‐1s borehole. This new "floating" ATS provides precise numerical ages for stratigraphic boundaries, biozones and geological events in the Songliao Basin, and can serve as a basis for correlation of strata and events between marine and terrestrial systems. Orbital forcing is a fundamental driver of Earth surface systems. The understanding of feedback responses to orbital forcing remains limited, with one of the most distinguishing features being its inherent nonlinearity. In this paper, we present geological evidence demonstrating nonlinearity during the greenhouse climate state, as exemplified by the Middle Triassic lacustrine-delta succession of the Ordos Basin in China. By combining the radio-isotopic and astronomical timescale, it suggests that lacustrine black shale facies were developed during early Ladinian hyperthermal episode, while deltaic facies were developed before and after the hyperthermal episode. The lacustrine redox cycles exhibit dominant precession cycles with a period of ∼20 kyr, whereas these precession cycles tend to be covered by the eccentricity and obliquity cycles with periods of ∼100 kyr and ∼ 33 kyr respectively in the deltaic detrital-input cycles. The diverse manifestations of orbital cycles in various environments can be explained by the nonlinear feedbacks. It is proposed that feedback mechanisms result from the combination effects of direct and indirect hyperthermal events, which are respectively manifested by the climatic processes (p CO 2 level) and sedimentary processes. Sedimentary processes can enhance the influence of eccentricity through smoothing and memory effects, as supported by statistical analysis. The Middle Triassic Luoping biota represents a full recovery of marine ecosystem after the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, yet the temporal duration and exceptional preservation mechanism of the Luoping biota remain uncertain. Here, zircon geochronology and cyclostratigraphy analysis are carried out on an Anisian (Middle Triassic) Guanling Formation succession yielding the Luoping biota at the Xiangdongpo section in Yunnan Province, South China. The sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) zircon U Pb dating of a tuff bed (bed 15) in the strata confirmed an age of 244.5 ± 2.2 Ma for the Luoping biota. Spectral analyses on the elemental proxies for terrestrial flux (K, Ti, Si, Al, and K/Ti) reveal significant sedimentary cycles. The cyclostratigraphy analysis shows persistent cycles of ca. 4.4–5.1 m, 1.7–2.0 m, 0.9–1.2 m, ∼0.5 m, 0.33–0.37 m, and ∼ 0.23 m cycles, which may correspond to the orbitally forced sedimentary cycles caused by short-eccentricity (∼100 kyr), obliquity (∼32.9 kyr), precession (∼20 kyr), and sub-Milankovitch cycles (∼10 kyr, ∼8.3 kyr, and ∼ 5 kyr). Based on these results, we estimate the duration of the Luoping biota to be ∼340 ± 71 kyr. The intensified monsoonal climate during eccentricity maxima modulated large amplitude of variations of ∼5 kyr quarter precession, ∼10 kyr half precession, and ∼ 20 kyr precession cycles, led to high terrigenous discharge and strengthened upwelling, which fueled the primary productivity in surface water due to high nutrient input into the Luoping area. Milankovitch cycles are quasi-periodic fluctuations in insolation forced by variations in the Earth's astronomical parameters, inducing climate change, and in turn affecting sedimentation and the formation of cyclostratigraphy. Astronomical calibration of the cyclostratigraphy can be exploited as a high-resolution (0.02–0.4 Myr) astronomical time scale (ATS), facilitating the reconstruction of Earth's evolutionary history. The ATS is already an important geochronometer for the Cenozoic and Mesozoic eras, however, the ATS for the Paleozoic Era has yet to be fully constructed. Radioisotopic age-calibrated Milankovitch cycles have been detected in Paleozoic strata, linked to the hierarchy of sedimentary cycles deposited in the continental, paralic, and marine environments. The orbital eccentricity metronome (i.e., 405-kyr cycle) has already been used to construct the ATS for the timing of Paleozoic geological and climatic events. Here, we review Paleozoic cyclostratigraphy and develop a provisional ATS from published paleoclimatic proxy time series, which results in revisions to the timing of key geological events in the Paleozoic Era. Abstract A cooling trend during the Middle Ordovician may have resulted in significant biotic, atmospheric and hydrologic changes, but the exact timing and forcing of this climate event still remain largely ambiguous. Here, we present astronomically calibrated magnetic susceptibility (MS) and gamma ray (GR) data from the shale and carbonate successions of the Kalpin area in the Tarim Basin, NW China to study the Middle Ordovician climate. The spectral analyses of the 405-kyr calibrated MS and GR time series reveal periodicities close to 405 (calibrated), 100, 31 and 19 kyr, supporting a Milankovitch forcing for the sedimentary cyclicity. The eccentricity and obliquity amplitude modulation cycles show main periodicities of ~2.4 and ~1.2 Myr, respectively. A cooling event along with the middle Darriwilian isotope carbon excursion (MDICE) appears to have been initiated by the alignment of the eccentricity and obliquity amplitude minima at 4.07 Myr prior to the Darriwilian/Sandbian (D/S) boundary. This climate event was in pace with high-amplitude obliquity oscillations during a period when the 1.2 Myr obliquity amplitude modulation cycles controlled the global third-order eustatic sequences. The termination of this cooling event corresponding to a global third-order highstand was initiated by an eccentricity oscillation maximum at 0.63 Myr prior to the D/S boundary. Subsequent climate alleviation was dominated by eccentricity forcing until the earliest Sandbian. We suggest that although the climate changes have been primarily associated with the CO 2 level, a specific sequence of astronomical variations during the Middle Ordovician was responsible for the time when the critical threshold was crossed. Establishing a high-precision numerical geological time scale for the Paleozoic Era remains a considerable challenge. In this study, we conducted detailed cyclostratigraphic analysis on the Middle Ordovician of the Huangnitang section and the core Changjin 3 (CJ-3), Zhejiang Province, South China. Magnetic susceptibility (MS) series were obtained from a total of 3909 discrete samples and are used as a paleoclimate proxy indicative of variations in detrital input of magnetic minerals. Power spectral analyses show that both the section and core have recorded an excellent hierarchy of Milankovitch cycles of 405 kyr, 101–135 kyr, 31–34 kyr, and 15.8–21.3 kyr. An integrated floating astronomical time scale (ATS) for the section and core was established according to the extracted stable 405-kyr eccentricity cycles. This new floating ATS suggests that the durations of the Darriwilian and Dapingian stages were 8.38 ± 0.4 Myr and 1.97 ± 0.7 Myr, and the durations of complete graptolite zones of the Middle Ordovician were precisely estimated. The ratios of band (obliquity or short eccentricity) power to total power reveal periodicities of ~1.2 Myr for the s 4 – s 3 term and ~1.9 Myr for the g 4 – g 3 term, and ~1.2-Myr obliquity cycles may have controlled global third-order eustatic sequences during the late Darriwilian. Termination of the late Paleozoic icehouse (LPI) serves as the Earth's first icehouse-to-greenhouse transition when the continents were covered by extensive vegetation. However, low-latitude climatic and biological responses to this climate transition remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a cyclostratigraphic analysis of a shallow marine succession of the Tieqiao section in South China. Variations in gamma rays that reflect continental weathering strength in the source regions are paced by Milankovitch cycles, including 405-kyr long eccentricity, 31.7-kyr obliquity, and ∼ 20-kyr (20.1 kyr and 18.7 kyr) precession. Based on the 405-kyr-scale cyclostratigraphic correlation between the Tieqiao section and the deep marine succession of Naqing, a floating astronomical time scale for the late Early Permian was constructed, and the base of the Kungurian stage was estimated as 284.83 ± 0.40 Ma. Climatic and astronomical variations were synchronized to this refined timescale and further compared with a geochronologically independent marine invertebrate biodiversity time series to interpret the dynamics of marine biological evolution during the late Paleozoic icehouse-to-greenhouse transition. The impacts of low-frequency obliquity forcing (with a period of ∼1.35 Myr) on climatic and biotic systems have differentiated in the changing climate backgrounds. When Gondwana land was minimally glaciated during the Artinskian, increased marine speciation was associated with elevated climatic humidity, nutrient inputs, linkage to glacial building at low-amplitude obliquity oscillation intervals (obliquity nodes). This cause-and-effect relationship gradually changed from ∼285.1 Ma, along with the termination of Gondwanan glaciation and tropical aridification over the long term. In an arid greenhouse, continental aridity and marine transgression at obliquity nodes led to a low nutrient level that the suppressed marine biodiversity. The Late Paleozoic Ice Age (ca. 335–260 Ma, LPIA) has long been considered as an analogy for the Cenozoic ice age since the Oligocene. The impact of astronomical forcing on the LPIA glaciation has been hampered due to the low-resolution (multi-million year scale) time framework. In the present study, high-resolution cyclostratigraphy based on magnetic susceptibility (MS), covering the Serpukhovian to late Moscovian icehouse climate, has been investigated in the Luokun section of South China. Power spectral analysis of the MS series reveals 3.44–4 m, 0.8–1.07 m, 0.3–0.32 m, and 0.17–0.19 m thick sedimentary cycles. Based on the available biostratigraphic constraints, calibrating the 3.44–4 m cycles to the 405 kyr eccentricity cycles indicates short eccentricity (136 and 100 kyr), short obliquity (34 kyr), and precession (19 and 15.9 kyr) orbital bands in addition to long eccentricity (405 kyr) band. We assigned the basal Serpukhovian and Moscovian stages in Luokun with the numerical ages from Geological Time Scale 2012 to construct two floating time scales ranging from 331.55 ± 0.5 Ma to 323.2 ± 0.5 Ma, and from 315.34 ± 0.35 Ma to 310.17 ± 0.35 Ma, respectively. The modulation of main obliquity ( s 4 – s 3 term) has a main periodicity of ∼1200 kyr. The modulation of ∼100 kyr eccentricity ( g 4 – g 3 term) shows a main periodicity of ∼2400 kyr with subordinate periodicities of ∼1620 and ∼1200 kyr for the Serpukhovian, and a main periodicity of ∼1600 kyr for the Moscovian. They may provide the geological evidence for a chaotic resonance associated with interactions between the orbits of Mars and the Earth in the Carboniferous. A duration of 7.68 ± 0.15 Myr was estimated for the Serpukhovian Stage. Eight higher accumulation rate events due to glacioeustatic drawdown were temporally constrained, and show close correspondence to far-field and near-field reconstructions of the LPIA glaciation. Glacioeustasy was paced with 405-kyr-long eccentricity and 1.2-Myr obliquity amplitude cycles during the Serpukhovian and Moscovian stages, likely indicating the nature in the warmer icehouse world similar to that of the Oligocene to Pliocene. At the end of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) from late Early Permian to early Late Permian, the global climate was impacted by a prevailing megamonsoon and Gondwanan deglaciation. To better understand the abiotic and biotic responses to Milankovitch-forced climate changes during this time period, multi-element X-ray fluorescence (XRF) geochemistry analyses were conducted on 948 samples from the late Early−late Middle Permian Maokou Formation at Shangsi, South China. The Fe/Ti, S/Ti, Ba/Ti and Ca time series, which were calibrated with an existing “floating” astronomical time scale (ATS), show the entire suite of Milankovitch rhythms including 405 kyr long eccentricity, 128 and 95 kyr short eccentricity, 33 kyr obliquity and 20 kyr precession. Spectral coherency and cross-phase analysis reveals that chemical weathering (monitored by Fe/Ti) and upwelling (captured by S/Ti and Ba/Ti) are nearly antiphase in the precession band, which suggests a contrast between summer and winter monsoon intensities. Strong obliquity signal in the Ba/Ti series is proposed to derive from changes in thermohaline circulation intensity from glaciation dynamics in southern Gondwana. The abundance of foraminifer, brachiopod and ostracod faunas within the Maokou Formation were mainly controlled by the ~1.1 Myr obliquity modulation cycle. Ocean Drilling Program Site 1143 of Leg 184 in the southern South China Sea (SCS) recovered a continuous sedimentary sequence since the Late Miocene (~ 10 Ma), which provides a unique record for better understanding the tectonic, environmental, and climatic evolution in the southern part of the SCS. In this study, we conducted a detailed rock magnetism and paleomagnetism study on 637 discrete samples taken from 512.1 m cores of Hole 1143C. Rock magnetic measurements indicate that the main magnetic mineral is single domain magnetite for samples from the upper 200 mcd (meter composite depth). All samples were subjected to stepwise alternating field demagnetization. The demagnetization behaviors of the samples below 200 mcd were erratic and unstable, owing to very weak remanent magnetization. A total of 15 reliable magnetic reversal events were identified in the upper 190 mcd cores of Hole 1143C based on the declination variations of the characteristic remanent magnetization, which can be correlated very well with the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale 2012 in combination with biostratigraphic data and astronomical time scales. Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site C0002 was cored in the Kumano Basin, which is a forearc basin in the Nankai margin of southwest Japan. The uppermost 1052.5 m of sediment in the accretionary prism, slope, and overlying forearc basin was recovered discontinuously during Expedition 315. Magnetic minerals from Site C0002 were studied to understand sedimentary, tectonic, and diagenetic processes in this forearc environment. Four rock magnetic units (A, B, C, and D) are identified. In the forearc basin sediments of Unit A, high concentrations of detrital magnetic iron oxides in surface sediments give way to progressive diagenetic dissolution with depth. Nevertheless, large titanomagnetite particles survived diagenetic dissolution along with magnetic nanoinclusions within host silicates that preserve a relict magnetic signal that records climatic modulation of sediment delivery to the Kumano Basin. The authigenic iron sulphides, ferrimagnetic greigite and paramagnetic pyrite, formed in association with gas hydrates and anaerobic oxidation of methane in the forearc basin sediments of Unit B. Methane venting from deeper within the slope sediments of Unit C and accretionary prism sediments of Unit D has given rise to formation of pyrite aggregates along sediment fractures and has contributed to further diagenetic depletion of magnetic signals in these units. Structural evolution of the Kumano Basin has caused migration of the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) through time so that the Site C0002 sediments record both the present and fossil GHSZ positions. Magnetic properties of Kumano Basin sediments provide insights into the interplay between diagenetic, climatic, and tectonic processes that controlled the sedimentary evolution of this forearc basin. High-resolution (930 samples) magnetic susceptibility (MS) and anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) analyses were conducted on the ~ 49 m thick Middle Permian Maokou Formation at Dukou, South China. Spectral analysis of covariant MS and ARM series reveal Milankovitch cycles with eccentricity, obliquity, and precession. A 5.7 myr floating 405 kyr eccentricity cycle-calibrated astronomical time scale was constructed and used as a geochronometer for estimating the durations of the conodont zones. The results indicate that the durations of the Jinogondolella postserrata , J. altudaensis , J. prexuanhanensis , and J. xuanhanensis conodont zones were 490 kyr, 560 kyr, 820 kyr, and 750 kyr, respectively. The 405 kyr-calibrated MS and ARM series also show prominent ~ 1 myr cyclicity, which may correspond to the secular frequencies of Earth and Mars, s 4 –s 3 , in the Middle Permian. The early Capitanian time interval was synchronous with the Kamura cooling event, and the accentuated obliquity cycling may signal ice-sheet expansion. The modulations of the obliquity have a close relationship with third-order eustatic sequences of the Wordian and Capitanian stages, suggesting a glacioeustatic origin during the Middle Permian. In their comment, Smith et al. (2016) discount the astronomical cycle identifications made from Middle Permian cyclostratigraphy in our recent paper (Fang et al. 2015), declaring that we presented defective null models and improper hypothesis tests, and greatly overestimated the statistical significance of cycles. Here we respond in detail to clarify the decisions that were made in our work, and to correct errors and omissions and other misunderstandings arising in their comment. Organic matter (OM) sequestration acts as a significant sink of the CO 2 in Earth's carbon cycle and is tightly associated with the climate and depositional environments. However, the dominant factors controlling OM burial in different depositional settings and the orbitally forced variations in the lacustrine OM accumulation remain poorly constrained. Here, we investigate the depositional environment of the Lucaogou Formation in southern Junggar Basin, northwestern China and further decipher the astronomically forced OM accumulation in different depositional environments. Sedimentological and cyclostratigraphic studies show that both shallow lake and semi-deep to deep lake deposits recorded significant Milankovitch signals among of which ∼405 kyr, ∼91 kyr, 34.5–37.4 kyr, and 17.3–22.8 kyr are interpreted to be long eccentricity, short eccentricity, obliquity, and precession cycles, respectively. A linkage among the lithofacies, natural gamma ray (NGR), and total organic carbon (TOC) content suggests that the depositional environment and OM accumulation were in pace with the hydrological cycle and lake-level changes, in response to the astronomically forced changes in the ice volume and monsoonal intensity. In the semi-deep to deep lake, TOC content tightly tracks the lithofacies and shows an in-phase relationship with NGR. However, this phase relationship has changed with sedimentary facies. The gypsiferous shale deposited in the restricted environment during lowstand intervals has higher TOC content than highstand dolomitic mudstone, demonstrating an anti-phase relationship with NGR data. Our study indicates that the OM sequestration is a dynamically cumulative process of supply and degradation. The Kuroshio Current (KC) is the biggest western boundary current in the northwest Pacific Ocean and plays an essential role in the Cenozoic climate evolution and ocean circulation changes. Paleoceanography of the Shikoku Basin, located downstream of the KC region, is sensitive to the evolution of the KC. In this study, the Miocene hemipelagic sediment supply in the Shikoku Basin has been investigated on sediments from lithologic Unit III of IODP Site C0011 using a combination of rock magnetism, Sr isotope composition, grain size analysis, and calcareous nannofossil study. Integrated results reveal that multidomain (MD) (titano-) magnetite concentration increases in the upper part of Unit III since ~10–11 Ma with elevated 87Sr/86Sr values (0.712–0.714) and fining up sediment grain size. Magnetic parameters, Sr isotope composition, and grain size, as reliable indicators of sediment sources, have been used to discriminate the geological sources of the sediments and attribute the increase in MD (titano-) magnetite concentration to the increasing detrital input from the East China Sea (ECS), which is rich in fine-grained particles and coarse-grained magnetite and have high 87Sr/86Sr ratio (0.712–0.727). Furthermore, the intensified western boundary current later became known as the KC is interpreted as a plausible reason for increasing fine-grained flux from the ECS. The late Ordovician Pingliang Formation on the southwestern margin of the Ordos Basin, North China, consists of rhythmic alternations of shale, limestone, and siliceous beds. To explore the possible astronomical forcing preserved in this lithological record, continuous lithological rank and magnetic susceptibility (MS) stratigraphic series were obtained from a ~ 34 m thick section of the Pingliang Formation at Guanzhuang. Power spectral analysis of the MS and rank series reveal 85.5 cm to 124 cm, 23 cm to 38 cm, and 15 cm to 27 cm thick sedimentary cycles that in ratio match that of late Ordovician short eccentricity, obliquity and precession astronomical cycles. The power spectrum of the MS time series, calibrated to interpreted short orbital eccentricity cycles, aligns with spectral peaks to astronomical parameters, including 95 kyr short orbital eccentricity, 35.3 kyr and 30.6 kyr obliquity, and 19.6 kyr and 16.3 kyr precession cycles. The 15 cm to 27 cm thick limestone–shale couplets mainly represent precession cycles, and siliceous bed deposition may be related to both precession and obliquity forcing. We propose that precession-forced sea-level fluctuations mainly controlled production of lime mud in a shallow marine environment, and transport to the basin. High-resolution (948 samples) measurements of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) were performed on the ~ 200 m thick Early–Middle Permian Maokou Formation of the Shangsi section, South China. The ARM variations are quasi-periodic and the wavelengths of significant cycles collectively present a ratio of 20:5:2:1 throughout the formation, corresponding to long orbital eccentricity, short orbital eccentricity, obliquity, and precession cycles. A strong obliquity (44 and 33 kyr) signal suggests that waning and waxing of the ice sheet in eastern Australia at the end of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) exerted a significant influence on global climate and sea level. A “floating” astronomical time scale (ATS) is developed using the 405 kyr orbital eccentricity cycle as an astronomical calibration target. This results in estimation of the Roadian and Wordian stages duration as 3.7 ± 0.4 myr and 2.9 ± 0.4 myr, respectively. Prominent ~ 2 myr cycles likely originated from Earth and Mars secular frequencies g 4 –g 3 , and ~ 1 myr cycles from s 4 –s 3 . These periodicities are shorter than those observed in the Cenozoic Era, which may be due to the chaotic behavior of the planets, but still reflecting 2:1 secular resonance between Earth and Mars. Third-order eustatic sequences are linked to the s 4 –s 3 obliquity term, which suggests a glacioeustatic controlling mechanism during this transitional stage from Paleozoic icehouse to Mesozoic greenhouse. Late Paleozoic deglaciation is Earth's first icehouse-to-greenhouse transition with extensive vegetation, but the response of tropical climate to this transition has not yet been fully addressed. Here, cyclostratigraphic analysis was conducted on the magnetic susceptibility (MS) record of a deep marine carbonate succession in South China to construct the astrochronology of late Cisuralian (Early Permian), and decipher the evolutionary response to the climate transition in the MS and δ13C carb time series. The constructed astronomical time scale indicates an age of 272.83 ± 0.2 Ma for the Cisuralian–Guadalupian boundary in South China. Synchronizing global records demonstrates a complicated linkage between low and high latitudes, involving secular changes in atmospheric p CO 2 , ice volume, tropical climate and carbon cycling. In the final stage of the Early Permian icehouse (~290–288.2 Ma), the delivery of moisture from low to high latitudes was reduced in comparison with that in the icehouse apex. A more humid climate facilitated the development of tropical coal forests and more storage of 12C on land. In a full greenhouse condition (~281–272 Ma), the tropical responses to a rise in atmospheric p CO 2 involved continental drying and ocean stagnation. On a shorter time scale, the nodes of 1.36 Myr obliquity cycles triggered ice-sheet expansion and enhanced tropical precipitation during an icehouse condition. With the gradual transition to an arid greenhouse, the insolation-climate relationship began to change at ~285.1 Ma, and the obliquity nodes became associated instead with terrestrial aridity and marine anoxia. In recent years, Beijing has been shown to suffer one of the most serious air pollution problems of any major world city. The concentrations of particulate matter (PM) pollutants, PM 2.5–10 and PM 2.5 , are commonly used as air pollution indexes. We conducted a detailed environmental magnetism study to investigate possible sources of air pollution in Beijing, China, using 283 pairs of the PM 2.5 and PM 2.5–10 samples collected daily from July 2010 to June 2011. Rock magnetic measurements, including magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic remanent magnetization, isothermal remanent magnetization, saturation isothermal remanent magnetization, hysteresis loops, first-order reversal curves (FORCs), and thermomagnetism, indicate that the main magnetic mineral is low-coercivity pseudo-single domain (PSD) magnetite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses on the PM indicate that the major magnetic phase is coarse-grained magnetite, which is most likely from automobile exhausts and braking system debris. Magnetic parameters of PM 2.5 and PM 2.5–10 show significant seasonal patterns that may be attributed to domestic heating enhancing magnetization of the PM during late autumn to early spring. Power spectral analyses and box–whisker plots indicate that the magnetic parameters have strong weekly variations that may be due to traffic emissions. These results indicate that magnetic parameters can be used as efficient proxies for monitoring Beijing's air pollution, and that the atmospheric environment may be improved by controlling vehicle emissions. The Songke-1 north (SK-1n) borehole recovered a continuous, 1541.66 m Late Santonian–Early Danian terrestrial succession in Songliao Basin (SB), northeastern China. It provides a unique record for improving our understanding of continental paleoclimate and ecological system in Cretaceous greenhouse world. Here we use thorium (Th) logging data as a paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic proxy to conduct a detailed cyclostratigraphic study on the SK-1n core. Power spectra, evolutionary fast Fourier transformation and wavelet analysis all reveal significant decameter- to meter-scale sedimentary cycles in the Nenjiang (K 2 n), Sifangtai (K 2 s) and Mingshui (K 2 m) formations. The ratios of cycle wavelengths in these stratigraphic units are ∼20:5:2:1, and are interpreted as Milankovitch cycles of 405 kyr and 100 kyr eccentricity, 38.4 kyr obliquity and 20 kyr precession cycles, respectively. An astronomical time scale (ATS) is established by tuning filtered 405 kyr eccentricity cycles to a target curve of the astronomical solution La2010d based on the magnetostratigraphic time framework of the SK-1n borehole. This ATS provides precise numerical ages for stratigraphic boundaries, biozones, geological and geophysical events, and serves as a basis for correlation of strata and events between marine and terrestrial systems. The Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg), Campanian/Maastrichtian, Santonian/Campanian boundaries are estimated at core depths of 318 m, 752.8 m and 1751.1 m, respectively. A ∼3.8 myr-long hiatus between the Nenjiang (K 2 n) and Sifangtai (K 2 s) formations occurs from 76.1 to 79.9 million years ago. The ages and durations of magnetochrons C33r to C30n are precisely estimated and provide new constraints on the Late Cretaceous Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS) and South Atlantic sea-floor spreading rates. The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 184 recovered a continuous sedimentary sequence since Miocene at Site 1148 in the northern South China Sea (SCS), which provided a unique record for better understanding the tectonic, environmental and climatic evolution of the SCS. In this study, we report a detailed paleomagnetic study on 881 discrete samples from the upper 460 m cores of Hole 1148A through stepwise alternating field demagnetization (AF) or thermal demagnetization (TD). Rock magnetic results from isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) acquisition, temperature dependence magnetic susceptibility (κ-T) and hysteresis loop parameters of representative samples indicate that the main magnetic mineral is low coercivity pseudo-single domain magnetite. The characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) with moderate downward or upward inclinations was identified after removing a low-stability drilling-induced remanence with steep downward inclinations. A new 23 Myr magnetostratigraphic time framework was established by correlating the magnetic polarity sequence to the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale 2012 (GPTS 2012; Ogg, 2012 ) in combination with biostratigraphic data. The mean sediment accumulation rates for lithostratigraphic Units V and IV, Unit III and lower Unit II, upper Unit II, Unit IB and Unit IA are calculated as ∼20.8 m/Myr, ∼15–17 m/Myr, 24.18 m/Myr, 17.07 m/Myr and 49.01 m/Myr, respectively. Abstract: The Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota in northeastern China provides an evolutionary window for ‘feathered’ dinosaurs, primitive birds, insects and early flowering plants. It also provides critical information for the biodiversity changes of the Early Cretaceous terrestrial ecosystem. Here we report a time series analysis for the 11.2-m-thick, fossil-bearing lacustrine deposits at the Sihetun section in western Liaoning, northeastern China on the basis of high-resolution magnetic susceptibility (MS) and anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) measurements. A hierarchy of sedimentary cycle bands of 120–260cm, 50–67cm and 18–42cm was recorded in the MS and ARM series. With available radioisotope age constraints from the same section, sedimentary cycles of 120–260cm, 50–67cm and 18–42cm were interpreted as Milankovitch cycles of short eccentricity (130 and 95kyr), obliquity (36.6 and 46kyr), and precession (22.1, 20.9 and 18kyr), respectively. The 100kyr-tuned ‘floating’ astronomical time scale indicates that the duration of the 11.2-m-thick section is ~0.67Myr and the average depositional rate is ~1.70cm/kyr. The duration of the 1.8-m-thick, main fossil-bearing interval that contains 8 beds of ‘feathered’ dinosaur/primitive bird fossils can be estimated as short as 150kyr. The results suggest that climate fluctuations manifested in paleobotanical, sedimentological and geochemical records of the Yixian Formation may have been controlled by orbital forcing during Early Cretaceous. Abstract: The first complete Early Turonian–Early Campanian lacustrine succession has been recovered from the SK-I south (SK-Is) borehole in the Songliao Basin (SLB), northeastern China. We conducted a detailed cyclostratigraphic study of natural gamma-ray (GR) log, thorium (Th) log, and magnetic susceptibility (MS) data from this core. Spectral analysis of the upper Quantou Formation (K2q3+4), Qingshankou Formation (K2qn), Yaojia Formation (K2y), and lower Nenjiang Formation (K2n1+2) reveals a hierarchy of meter- to decameter-scale cycling in the data. The wavelength ratios of the cycles in these stratigraphic units are ~20:5:2:1, corresponding with those of Milankovitch cycle periods of 405kyr (long eccentricity):100kyr (short eccentricity):37kyr (obliquity):20kyr (precession), indicating astronomical control on sedimentation. An astronomical time scale (ATS) was established by tuning interpreted 405kyr cycles to a 405kyr orbital eccentricity target curve, and to four SIMS U–Pb zircon radioisotope ages. This ‘absolute’ ATS provides precise numerical ages for stratigraphic boundaries, biozones, geological and geophysical events, and serves as a basis for correlation of strata and events between marine and terrestrial systems. The ages of the C33r/C34n geomagnetic polarity boundary in K2n2 and three short reversal events in K2y are estimated as 83.633Ma, 84.819–84.862Ma, 84.982–85.092Ma and 85.240–85.629Ma, respectively. Long-period amplitude modulations in the obliquity and eccentricity bands of the 405-kyr-tuned GR-Th series provide strong evidence that long-period orbital forcing influenced climate change and depositional processes in the SLB. The extracted amplitude modulations provide evidence that the orbits of Earth and Mars were not in secular resonance, and were undergoing chaotic interactions during this time, although the modulations do not match those of recent astronomical models. Abstract: The Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation (K2qn) in the Songliao Basin (SLB) of Northeast China consists of up to 550 m thick, lacustrine mudstone and shale that constitute one of the most important source rocks of the Daqing oil field. A high-resolution cyclostratigraphic analysis of the natural gamma-ray logging from 10 wells of the Qingshankou Formation (K2qn) reveals orbital cycles of precession (20 ka), obliquity (40 ka) and eccentricity (100 ka and 405 ka), providing strong evidence for astronomically driven climate changes in the Late Cretaceous terrestrial environments. Floating astronomical time scales (ATS) are established for all sections, which demonstrate variable durations of K2qn across the basin (1.09 Ma–5.20 Ma) and strong diachroneity of the lacustrine strata. Four periods of high depositional rates can be identified in the central parts of the basin, possibly recording deposition during times of sustained wet climate and high chemical weathering. An ATS established from well M206 in the central depression zone of the basin, where the most complete and stable Milankovitch cycles are present, suggests that the maximum duration of the K2qn is 5.20 Ma (from 94.27 Ma to 89.07 Ma; Late Cenomanian to Early Coniacian). The lacustrine anoxic event 1 (LAE1) at the Cenomanian–Turonian boundary lasted ~210–310 ka, during which the most prolific petroleum source rocks in SLB were deposited. The onset (~94.21–94.18 Ma) and duration (~210–310 Ka) of LAE1 in SLB are comparable to those of the oceanic anoxic event 2 (OAE2; onset at 94.21 Ma and duration of ~320–900 ka), suggesting that the same trigger mechanism, such as increased atmospheric CO2 from large-scale igneous activity, may have initiated high primary productivity and organic carbon burial in both marine and terrestrial systems. A paleomagnetic study was carried out on the Yangzhuang Formation (∼1350 Ma) of the Jixian System in the North China Block (NCB). Detailed stepwise thermal demagnetization isolated two components. The soft component (component A) was interpreted as a remagnetization in the recent geomagnetic field. The hard component (component B) with higher unblocking-temperatures was carried by hematite. Its site-mean direction is D/I = 77.6°/-24.3° (κ = 5.4, α95 = 18.3°, N = 15 sites) before, and D/I = 72.2°/11.5° (κ = 24.6, α95 = 7.9°) after tilt correction. It passes a fold test (Mesozoic folding) at 99% confidence level and reversal test at 95% confidence level. The corresponding pole locates at 17.3°N, 214.5°E (dp = 4.1°, dm = 8.0°). A best fit of paleomagnetic poles from the NCB, Baltica, Siberia and the apparent polar wander path for Laurentia suggests a long-lived connection between these paleo-continents between ∼1800 and 1350 Ma. The identification of the Grenvillian‐age ophiolite suites in the Yangtze block in recent years suggested that the northern Yangtze subblock (NYB) and the southern Yangtze subblock (SYB) were once separated by an ocean in late Mesoproterozoic. Although some paleogeographic models advocated the Pre‐Grenvillian connections between the south China blocks and Laurentia, none of them has been paleomagnetically tested. Here we report the new paleomagnetic results obtained from the ∼1,270 Ma purplish‐red muddy dolomite beds of the Luanshigou Formation, Shennongjia Group, NYB, providing new constraints for reconstructing the paleogeographic positions of the south China blocks in late Mesoproterozoic. A total of 447 samples underwent stepwise thermal demagnetization. Two components were identified. The low‐temperature component is interpreted as the recent viscous remnant magnetization. The high‐temperature component was obtained from 64 samples below 580°C and from 177 samples below 690°C, directed northeast‐up or southwest‐down, antipodally, positioning the paleomagnetic pole at 18.5°S, 74.4°E (dm/dp = 2.5/1.6°). Rock magnetic results demonstrate that the magnetic carriers in purplish‐red dolomite and pale‐pink dolomite are predominated by hematite and magnetite, respectively. The data quality is supported by an inverse baked contact test, a B‐class reversal test, and the paleomagnetic pole is distinct from any younger poles of the region. Based on the paleomagnetic results, aided by geological evidence, we propose a reconstruction in which the NYB was juxtaposed to southwestern Laurentia in the late Mesoproterozoic and suggest that the late Mesoproterozoic Miaowan‐Shimian ophiolite zone in the Yangtze block was likely an extension of the Grenville belt of Laurentia. Several paleogeographic models proposed the Mesoproterozoic relationships between the south China blocks and Laurentia, but none has been paleomagnetically tested. Here we report a new paleomagnetic pole obtained from the ∼1,270 Ma purplish‐red dolomite beds of the Luanshigou Formation, Shennongjia Group in the NYB. The data quality is assured by the positive paleomagnetic field tests. Our results combing with the geological evidence suggest that the NYB was located in a low‐latitudinal position and connected to southwestern Laurentia in the late Mesoproterozoic. Carbonate dissolution in subduction zones transfers surface carbon to the mantle and plays an important role in regulating global carbon cycles through geologic time. Petrological observations and thermodynamic models predict substantial dissolution of subducting carbonates induced by slab-derived fluids at arc mantle depths, but this dissolution process has rarely been verified by existing geochemical tracers. In this paper we show that zinc and magnesium isotopes can serve as such tracers through a comparative study on carbonate-bearing and carbonate-free sediments from the South China Sea and the Philippine Sea that are going to be subducted. Leaching experiments are further performed to characterize the isotopic difference between dissolved carbonates and silicate components in sediments. Bulk carbonate-bearing sediments and carbonate-free sediments surprisingly have indistinguishable δ66Zn (0.26 ± 0.04‰ versus 0.25 ± 0.04‰), but the former display systematically lower δ26Mg (−0.85‰ to −0.17‰, n = 10) than the latter (−0.26‰ to +0.13‰, n = 13). Leaching experiments show that dissolved carbonates have much higher δ66Zn (0.82 ± 0.26‰) and lower δ26Mg (−2.70 ± 0.35‰) compared with the silicate residues (δ66Zn = 0.21 ± 0.06‰; δ26Mg = −0.06 ± 0.14‰). These results indicate that the presence of carbonate components has insignificant influence on Zn isotopic compositions of bulk sediments but prominent influence on their Mg isotopic compositions. In this respect, the final fate of carbonates in subducting sediments can be tracked by a combined Mg and Zn isotope analysis on mantle-derived magmas. For instance, bulk carbonate-bearing sediment addition (i.e., no carbonate dissolution) during subduction would produce low δ26Mg but normal δ66Zn values (i.e., Mg-Zn isotopic "decoupling") in mantle-derived magmas. By contrast, if carbonate dissolution occurs during subduction, the high δ66Zn and low δ26Mg (i.e., Mg-Zn isotopic "coupling") signals of dissolved carbonates will be transferred to the sources of mantle-derived magmas. We test this application for a Cenozoic subduction-related, arc-like volcanic exposure from Tengchong, Southwestern China and find significant Mg-Zn isotopic coupling, which demonstrates carbonate dissolution during Indian Oceanic slab subduction. Our results also shed constraints on the amount of dissolved carbonates in the sub-arc mantle. Available data reveal the absence of high δ66Zn and low δ26Mg in global arc lavas, for which we suggest to be the result of a relatively low proportion (<20%) of dissolved calcium carbonates in the sub-arc mantle. In the Cretaceous Songliao Basin, northeastern China, boreholes have recovered detailed geologic data from sub-basins that developed during the early rifting of the basin. Among these, the Lower Cretaceous Shahezi Formation (K 1 s) in the Songshen 4 (SS4) Well is represented by an 836-m-thick succession of fluvial-alluvial deposits, with coals distributed throughout the upper part of the formation. Gamma-ray (GR) logging data are quantitatively related to grain size-defined litho-facies that recur throughout the succession, with high GR values in mudstones and low GR values in sandstones. Cyclostratigraphic analysis of the GR log reveals depositional cycling at frequencies that are consistent with those of the Earth's astronomical parameters. The results also indicate that occurrence of coal beds occur every ~100 kyr, when development of vegetation at the depositional site was promoted by humid climate. We propose a model of astronomically forced hydroclimate change to explain the cycling of depositional environments between fluvial and alluvial conditions. The model describes a principally fluvial environment that episodically experienced, at one extreme, advancing alluvial conditions involving a drop in base level, lake recession and increased aridity (conglomerates and coarse sands), and at the other extreme, an advancing lakeshore with a rise in base level and increased humidity (fine sands, silts, muds and coal). A floating astronomical time scale was established by calibrating long orbital eccentricity (405-kyr) cycles interpreted along the GR series. The results indicate that the duration of the K 1 s is 11.14 Myr (27.5405-kyr long orbital eccentricity cycles), corresponding to an average sedimentation rate of 6.55 cm/kyr. The "hothouse" Triassic climate provides a key window to study megamonsoon systems. However, high-quality paleoclimate proxy records are rarely reported from the Tethys realm, where the seasonal meridional migration of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) should be the most remarkable. Here, continuous and well-dated proxy records are used to study monsoon activity in the northeastern Tethys from the Middle Triassic lacustrine sediments (Ch7 black shale, Yanchang Formation) in the Ordos Basin (China). The proxies, including natural gamma-ray intensity, magnetic susceptibility, and element concentrations and ratios (U, K, Zr/Al, Zr/Rb and Sr/Rb), document a strong precession signal in the sediments. We propose that the periodic deposition of the Ch7 black shale occurred in response to intensifications in a monsoon-driven climate enhanced by the early Ladinian warming event. Climate variability in the Ordos Basin (~25°N) reflects the harmonics of ~100 kyr, ~20 kyr and ~10 kyr cycles and is highly coherent with solar insolation at 9° latitude, suggesting that this monsoon system might have been modulated by tropical solar insolation. A high-precision time framework is critical for improving our understanding of three major events: the Late Ordovician mass extinction, the Hirnantian glaciation, and the Hirnantian isotopic carbon excursion (HICE). In the present study, we conducted detailed cyclostratigraphic analysis of a high-resolution (1–2-cm intervals) anhysteretic remanent magnetization series obtained from the Wanhe section in South China, covering the lower Katian through Hirnantian. Power spectra and derived average spectral misfit results show that the section records the ensemble of Milankovitch cycles with 405-kyr (long-eccentricity), 93–125-kyr (short-eccentricity), 33.8-kyr (main obliquity), and 17–22-kyr (precession) periods. The obliquity period of 33.8 ± 0.46 kyr indicates a precession constant k of 57.19 ± 0.53 arcsec/yr, a length of day of 22.37 ± 0.12 h, and an Earth–Moon distance of 375,330 ± 722 km (vs. 384,000 km today) during the Late Ordovician (445 Ma). The ratios of obliquity band power to total power reveal periodicities of 1.32 Myr for the s 4 – s 3 term and 173.4 kyr for the s 3 – s 6 term. Aided by the highly fluctuating magnetic susceptibility (MS), we recognized a series of 1.32-Myr obliquity-forced glacio-eustatic cycles with three intervals of sea-level rise and climate warming trend characterized by high MS values and two episodes of sea-level fall and climate cooling trend before the Hirnantian. The 405-kyr and subsequent 33.8-kyr calibrations produce an ~7.36-Myr floating astronomical time scale (FATS) for the studied succession, indicating that the estimated durations for the Hirnantian Stage, the worldwide Hirnantian glaciation, and the first and second phases of the Late Ordovician mass extinction were ~1225 kyr, ~830 kyr, ~440 kyr, and ~540 kyr, respectively. The Cambrian is the first period of the Phanerozoic during which numerous major geological and biological events occurred. Understanding these events requires a high-resolution time scale. The Luoyixi section in Guzhang (Hunan Province, China) is the global stratotype section and point (GSSP) for the Guzhangian Stage. Here, magnetic susceptibility and δ13C data were used to conduct cyclostratigraphic analyses covering the upper Drumian through lower Guzhangian stages. The results of the power spectral analyses and average spectral misfit analyses indicate that the 25–25.53 m, 6.25–6.91 m, 1.90–2.03 m, and 1.08–1.19 m sedimentary cycles may represent long-eccentricity, short-eccentricity, obliquity and precession cycles, respectively. A ~1400 kyr floating astronomical time scale was constructed using the stable 405-kyr eccentricity cycles to calibrate the agnostoid trilobite zones. The drift history of the Lhasa terrane plays an essential role in understanding the tectonic evolution of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean and the Neo-Tethyan Ocean, as well as the evolutionary history of the Tibetan Plateau. Here, a combined rock magnetic, petrographic, and palaeomagnetic study is performed on the Upper Permian–Lower Triassic limestones (∼259–251 Ma) in the western Lhasa terrane. The site-mean direction for the 28 sites is D g = 32.1°, I g = 50.3°, k g = 47.9 and α 95 = 4.0° in situ and D s = 342.9°, I s = 32.7°, k s = 43.2 and α 95 = 4.2° after tilt-correction, yielding a palaeopole at 68.9°N, 314.4°E with A 95 = 4.3°, corresponding to a palaeolatitude of 18.0° ± 4.3°N. The fold tests are not significant because the sampling section shows monoclinic features with minor variations in their bedding attitudes. The palaeopoles for the directions before and after tilt-correction are compared with reliable Late Permian–Palaeogene palaeopoles obtained from the Lhasa terrane. Based on these comparisons, the studied limestones were remagnetized prior to tilting and this remagnetization most likely occurred during the Early Cretaceous. The depositional environment of the limestones may have changed from anoxic to suboxic and oxic during the Early Cretaceous, leading to the oxidation of iron sulphide to authigenic magnetite. Meanwhile, the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous convergence between the western Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes may have resulted in tectonic fluid migration and the formation of calcite veins and stylolites in the limestones. This is supported by the presence of small calcite veins and stylolites in some samples, as well as the fact that the framboidal oxides were formerly sulphides (mostly pyrite), implying that the majority of the iron oxides observed in the limestones were authigenic. These processes indicate that chemical remanent magnetization caused by the growth of magnetic minerals related to tectonic fluid migration was most likely the mechanism for the limestone remagnetization. The timing of formation of the Hegenshan suture is crucial to understanding the evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Here we present a well‐dated paleomagnetic pole (103 samples from 15 sites, 36.7°N/29.2°E, A95 = 3.3°) that passed a positive fold test, a reversal test, and a conglomerate test from the ∼250 Ma upper Gunbayn Formation andesites in the southeastern Mongolia Block (MOB). The high‐quality paleomagnetic database may demonstrate that the MOB drifted rapidly southward and collided with the Xilinhot–Songliao Block between 256 and 250 Ma, resulting in the closure of the Hegenshan Ocean at ∼250 Ma. The Hegenshan suture and the Solonker suture were formed almost simultaneously and marked the final closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean. The timing of the formation of the Hegenshan suture, however, remains ambiguous due to the lack of reliable paleomagnetic data. In this study, we present accurately dated paleomagnetic constraints on the paleogeographic position of the Mongolia Block (MOB), located on the northern side of the Hegenshan suture, at ∼250 Ma. By combining high‐quality Late Permian–Early Triassic paleomagnetic data with geological evidence, we propose a new reconstruction that suggests the near‐simultaneous closure of both the Hegenshan and Solonker oceans around 250 Ma. This significant event marks the final disappearance of the PAO and represents a fundamental stage in the establishment of the tectonic framework of the eastern CAOB at that time. Abstract Recent studies show that zinc isotopes could provide valuable clues to environmental change and biogeochemical cycle of the past oceans. This study reports a modified procedure for leaching the carbonate fractions in sedimentary rocks, a thorough evaluation of diagenetic effects, and systematic variations of Zn and Sr isotope ratios in lower part of the Ediacaran stratigraphic unit deposited in the aftermath of the Marinoan glaciation in South China. The influence of post-depositional diagenesis on Zn isotope compositions of the studied samples is assessed by comparing δ66Zn to other geochemical indexes (87Sr/86Sr, δ13C, δ18O and Mn/Sr ratios). In the five studied cap carbonate sections (Member I of the Doushantuo Formation), dolostones from four sections have δ66Zn values positively correlated with δ18O values and negatively correlated with 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7081–0.7204). These correlations suggest that these cap dolostone samples have been modified by post-depositional diagenesis. The light δ66Zn value (−0.02‰) suggests that initial Zn isotope ratios of cap dolostones could have been reset by hydrothermal fluids with relatively high Zn concentration and low δ66Zn values. By contrast, carbonates from Member II of the Doushantuo Formation above cap dolostones are relatively pristine based on their low 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7079–0.7086) being indistinct from the proposed early Ediacaran seawater 87Sr/86Sr values. Chemical and isotopic variations in these samples are interpreted to reflect primary signals that record paleo-environmental changes of the early Ediacaran ocean. A rapid increase of δ66Zn from ∼0.3‰ to 1.1‰ occurs in the middle part of Member II, accompanying by relatively invariant 87Sr/86Sr ratios that imply insignificant changes in input from continental weathering. Considering the limited change in atmospheric oxygen during this period, the rapid δ66Zn raise indicates an increase in buried organic matters, which is consistent with the coupled positive shift of δ13C carb , as well as the fossil records found in the same strata. These results provide insights into Zn cycling in the post-Marinoan oceans and facilitate the application of Zn isotopes in carbonates as a proxy for the fate of marine organic matter. Here, we conducted cyclostratigraphic analysis on the magnetic susceptibility (MS) from the Kuniutan and Miaopo formations in the Zhenjin section and the Pagoda and Linhsiang formations in the Puxihe section in Yichang, South China. We constructed an astronomical time scale to understand the astronomically forced paleoclimate changes during this key interval. Spectral analyses on the MS series show that the thickness ratios of different sedimentary cycles in the studied sections are consistent with those of Milankovitch cycles during the Middle and Late Ordovician. The floating astronomical time scale of the studied sections was constructed based on astronomical tuning to 405-kyr eccentricity cycles, providing an estimated duration of ∼ 0.82 Myr for the Guttenberg isotopic carbon excursion (GICE). A high-precision and continuous astronomical time scale has previously been established in the Ordovician marine sediments in the Tarim Basin. The cyclostratigraphic correlation of sedimentary successions between the South China Block and Tarim Basin reveals that the duration of the Middle Ordovician gap in South China is ∼ 1.38 Myr. The paleogeography of the Tethyan Himalaya (TH) during the Mesozoic is vital to constrain the evolutionary history of the Neo‐Tethys Ocean, but reliable paleomagnetic data from Jurassic rocks in this area are scarce. Here, we report the first high‐quality paleomagnetic results from the Middle Jurassic (∼175–173 Ma) Lanongla Formation limestones in the Nyalam area of the TH. For most specimens, stepwise thermal or hybrid demagnetization reveals two well‐defined magnetization components. A low‐temperature component, which is isolated between natural remanent magnetization and 200–300°C, is consistent with the present geomagnetic field direction. A high‐temperature component, which is isolated between 300–350°C/10–25 mT and 500–580°C/60–120 mT, passes fold tests at the 95% and 99% confidence level, indicating a prefolding primary magnetization. The tilt‐corrected site‐mean direction for 28 paleomagnetic sites is Ds = 331.0° and Is = −49.9° with α95 = 2.7°, which provides a Fisherian site‐mean paleopole at 23.7°N, 292.9°E with A95 = 2.8° and a paleolatitude of 31.7 ± 2.8°S for the Nyalam study area (28.6°N, 86.1°E). A comparison between the reliable Middle Jurassic‐Early Cretaceous poles obtained from the TH and those observed from the Lhasa terrane reveals that the Neo‐Tethys Ocean for the reference point (29.1°N, 86.1°E) had a latitudinal width of 3,500 ± 1,000 km at ∼174 Ma, reached its greatest width of 7,000 ± 1,000 km at ∼137 Ma, and had an average latitudinal spreading rate of ∼10.4 cm/year during ∼174–137 Ma. Using a single insensitive proxy in cyclostratigraphy may lead to misleading conclusions regarding timescale, paleoenvironment, paleoclimate and orbital behavior. How to obtain the most reliable one from multiple solutions of geophysical log proxies without time constraints is still an outstanding problem. Here, we develop a new method (power ratio accumulation, or PRA) combining power decomposition and null hypothesis of no astronomical forcing with the Monte Carlo simulation. This method obtains both optimal sedimentation rate and optimal proxy from multiple untuned proxy datasets. The sensitivity of multiple geophysical log proxies in lacustrine deposits is first revealed from member 1 of Nenjiang Fm of Cretaceous Continental Scientific Drilling in the Songliao Basin using this method. The results show that the optimal proxy is thorium content, followed by potassium content, uranium content and natural gamma-ray intensity, while total organic carbon content, resistivity, interval transit time and density are the worst. Evidence of phase reversal of proxies caused by the joint influence of astronomically forced weathering, water level and burial of biogenic materials is found. This supports a new mechanism that explains the sensitivity of geophysical log proxies from the perspective of phase stability. Our research not only provides a powerful tool (PRA method) for astrochronologic testing and sensitivity evaluation of multiple untuned proxy datasets, but also builds a bridge (new mechanism) between geophysical parameters and astronomically forced cycles. The drift history of the Lhasa terrane is crucial for understanding the tectonic evolution of Tethyan Oceans and Jurassic true polar wander. However, high‐quality Middle Jurassic paleomagnetic data from the Lhasa terrane are limited in number. Here we report a combined paleomagnetic and geochronologic study on the Yeba Formation volcanic rocks, dated at ∼170 Ma, from the Lhasa terrane. Robust field and reversal tests indicate that the characteristic remanent magnetizations are primary. Our results provide a reliable Middle Jurassic (∼170 Ma) paleopole at 29.8°N, 180.7°E with A95 = 5.7° and a paleolatitude of 14.4 ± 5.7°N for the Lhasa area. Compared with previous paleomagnetic and geologic evidence, we propose that the Meso‐Tethys Ocean probably began to close in the eastern part at ∼168 Ma and that the Lhasa terrane underwent a ∼2,900 km southward "monster shift" during the Late Jurassic. Recent studies highlight the debates about the role of the northwestern China blocks, for example, north Tarim block, south Tarim block (STB), Altyn Tagh block (ATB) and Qaidam‐Qilian block (QQB) during the assembly of Rodinia. We herein present a combined paleomagnetic, geochronological, and geochemical study on 16 mafic dikes in the northern ATB. After removing a recent viscous remanent magnetization, three characteristic remanent magnetization components (CHs) were isolated. CH1 was identified in eight NW‐trending diabase dikes, one of which was newly dated at 895.3 ± 7.7 Ma through use of SHRIMP baddeleyite U‐Pb methodology. It yields a mean direction (D/I) of 123.3°/−42.2° (α95 = 12.1°). The paleopole (40.9°S/184.6°E, A95 = 11.7°) was calculated by averaging eight virtual geomagnetic poles (VGPs) from each dike. A partial baked‐contact test supports the primary origin of CH1. CH2 was isolated from three E‐W trending diabase dikes, pointing northwest with considerably shallower downward inclinations. CH3 was obtained from five lamprophyre dikes, directing southeast with moderate to shallow upward inclinations. However, the VGPs of either CH2 or CH3 are insufficient to average a precise mean pole. Geochemical analyses also reveal petrogenetic discrepancy among the dikes with distinct CHs. Combining the new ∼895 Ma pole of CH1 with the global paleomagnetic database and being aided by geological evidence, we propose that the STB‐ATB‐QQB and the north China craton were located along the northwestern side of Laurentia in Rodinia at ∼895 Ma, and suggest the connection might have been intact until ∼780 Ma. Hybrid carbonates, defined as the combinations of in situ abiotic, microbial, and skeletal precipitates, have changed with the biological and environmental conditions throughout geological history. After a long interval of dual-hybrid carbonates, the triple hybrid carbonates became predominant in the late Pennsylvanian and lasted until the Middle Triassic. The organic reefs of the upper Moscovian–Kasimovian (mid–late Pennsylvanian) strata of Guizhou, South China, are composed of abundant microbial carbonates, abiotic marine cements, and skeletal organisms, which are classified as triple hybrid carbonates. Microbial boundstones consisting of aragonitic cements (e.g., botryoidal cements) and microbial micrite are the major contributors to the reefs, as framework constructors, cavity fillers, and hard substrate for the encrusting metazoans. Skeletal components (e.g., the colonial rugose coral Ivanovia) and stromatolitic microbial carbonates could build simple frameworks with the growth cavities filled by syndepositional marine cements, automicrite, and carbonate particulate sediments. In situ phylloid algae normally form patch reefs and biostromes with abundant microbial micrite and peloids, while algal fragments contribute to the skeletal–cement–microbial reefs as large grains encrusted by microbial carbonates or marine cements. Petrographic features suggest the reefs formed at a shelf margin or upper slope setting with active water circulation. The evolution of Carboniferous organic buildups was primarily driven by changes in reef-building organisms, closely linked to external conditions, specifically seawater chemistry and paleoclimate. The ubiquitous triple hybrid carbonates in South China reefs, in agreement with Pennsylvanian tropical shallow-water reefs in their components, are proposed to derive from the interaction between decreasing atmospheric CO2 concentration, high seawater Mg2+/Ca2+ ratio, warm tropical water, and the evolution of skeletal organisms in the Pennsylvanian. The early Middle Triassic (Anisian) Luoping biota is representative of marine ecosystems following their full recovery after the Permian-Triassic mass extinction; however, its exceptional preservation remains poorly understood. In this paper, we report multiple geochemical proxies (TOC, TN, P/Al, Cu xs , Ni xs , Ba xs , δ13C carb , and δ13C org) from Member II of the Middle Triassic Guanling Formation at the Xiangdongpo section in Luoping County, Yunnan Province, China, to assess the relationship between primary productivity and exceptional preservation of the Luoping biota. Variations in TOC, TN, P/Al, Cu xs , and Ni xs values show that exceptional preservation coincides with two intervals of high productivity. Relatively low C/N ratios and distributed Δ13C carb-org values indicate that primary productivity was dominated by eukaryotic algae and prokaryotic microbes. Based on geochemical analyses and regional correlations, we conclude that, following sea level rise, nutrients were supplied to the Luoping area by upwelling from the open ocean and facilitated the blooming of marine communities in an open platform setting. In the intra-platform depression, increased nutrients supply also fueled high primary productivity in surface waters and oxygen consumption in the water column, causing bottom water anoxia. The lack of oxygen in the bottom water reduced the rate of biomass degradation and bioturbation, promoting growth of microbial mats, leading to the exceptional preservation of macrofauna. This study highlights the important role of elevated primary productivity in exceptional fossil preservation by triggering anoxia of bottom waters. Our findings confirm the widespread development of anoxic conditions during the middle Anisian (Pelsonian), from the eastern Tethys to the Panthalassa, and also reveal the interactions between organisms and the environment after Permian-Triassic mass extinction. • The exceptional preservation of the Luoping biota is related to two anoxic intervals with high productivity. • The source of productivity is derived from a mixture of eukaryotic algae and prokaryotic microbes. • A updated model is proposed for the exceptional preservation of the Luoping biota. Diagenesis is a double-edged sword of geochemical recordings. It makes us always doubt about the representativeness of many geochemical indicators, especially the isotope and mineral related. It also provides a window to explore the biogeochemical processes at the water–rock interface, which are related to the interactions between the hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere. In this study, we identified microbial early diagenesis in lacustrine ostracods from the Songliao Basin 91.35 million years ago by using in situ mineralogical and carbon isotope analytical methods. Our results suggest multiple biological early-diagenesis processes and the formation of a ferric and methane transition zone (FMTZ) in the sulfate-poor pore water, which are conducive to the formation of dolomite and ankerite. These secondary carbonate minerals related to dissimilatory iron reduction and methanogenesis have heavier carbon isotopic compositions than the calcified ostracod shell in the water column and might bring interferences to the geochemical parameters of ostracods. The paleogeographic position of the Xilinhot–Songliao Block (XSB) is crucial to understand the spatiotemporal relationship between the Paleo‐Asian Ocean (PAO) and East Paleo‐Tethys Ocean (EPTO) tectonic domains. However, the lack of robust early Permian paleomagnetic data in the XSB has led to uncertainty in its paleogeographic position. Here, we report a well‐dated (286.1–281.25 Ma) paleomagnetic pole (38.4°N/17.6°E, A95 = 4.0°) from andesites of the Dashizhai Formation in the XSB. We combined our paleomagnetic data with available geological and paleontological data to reconstruct the paleogeographic relationship between the PAO and EPTO. The XSB was located on the northern margin of the EPTO at ∼285 Ma, suggesting that the northern boundary of the EPTO tectonic domain extended to the southern margin of the XSB, the Hegenshan Ocean (between the XSB and the Mongolia Block) corresponds to the eastern PAO, and the XSB separated the eastern PAO and EPTO at ∼285 Ma. Plain Language Summary: The evolution of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean (PAO) and the East Paleo‐Tethys Ocean (EPTO) tectonic domains constructed the late Paleozoic paleogeographic pattern of Central and East Asia. Due to contradictions between the tectonic paleogeography and paleobiogeography of the Xilinhot–Songliao Block (XSB) during the early Permian, the spatiotemporal relationship between the two tectonic domains has been unclear. In this study, we present well‐dated paleomagnetic constraints on the paleogeographic position of the XSB at ca. 285 Ma. We provide a new reconstruction for the Northeast Asian block, which suggests that the XSB was located between the eastern PAO and the EPTO during that time and was the intermediate unit that separated the two tectonic domains. The Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) was the longest-lasting icehouse in the Phanerozoic. Previous studies indicated a climate warming interval in the earliest Permian—an apex of the LPIA. To better understand hydroclimatic changes and carbon cycling within this time interval, we conducted a series of high-resolution geochemical and rock magnetic analyses, including magnetic measurements (e.g., magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic remanent magnetization, hysteresis loops, temperature-dependent susceptibility), ratio of iron to potassium (Fe/K), and carbonate carbon isotope (δ13C carb) from a deep-marine section in South China. Calibrated to the published astronomical time scale, a negative δ13C carb excursion (−1‰) was identified during 298.4–297.9 Ma, and it was time-equivalent with the warming interval, recognized by a decrease in conodont apatite oxygen isotopes in South China, low-latitude sea-level transgression, and high-latitude deglaciation. The negative δ13C carb excursion also coincided with a magmatic pulse of the Skagerrak-Centered Large Igneous Province (LIP), indicating that the perturbation in carbon cycling is likely associated with the release of volcanic CO 2. Furthermore, cyclostratigraphic analysis on multiple paleoclimatic proxies, including ferrimagnetic susceptibility, gamma-ray, and Fe/K, suggested that the negative excursion of δ13C carb also overlapped with the maximum of the eccentricity cycle. The Hangenberg Event was one of the most significant mass extinctions accompanied by large-scale climate changes at the end of the Devonian period. Lack of precise and accurate geochronological constraints in the eastern Paleotethys has hindered a high-resolution global correlation of the Hangenberg Event. Here, we report the U–Pb dates of zircons from the bentonite samples intercalated with strata recording the Hangenberg Event in the Muhua region, Guizhou, South China, using both sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) and chemical abrasion - isotope dilution - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS) methods. A bentonite within the Hangenberg Event strata in the Muhua area was dated at 360.47 ± 0.68 Ma by CA-ID-TIMS, which is more precise than the results obtained by SHRIMP methods (361.5 ± 2.9 Ma and 359.8 ± 1.5 Ma). Thus, we propose that the Hangenberg Event took place at 360.47 ± 0.68 Ma in South China, based on the first precise CA-ID-TIMS zircon age from the Daposhang section. The age obtained from South China for the Devonian–Carboniferous boundary overlaps with that in Geologic Time Scale 2020, within the total uncertainties. • New U-Pb CA-ID-TIMS and SHRIMP zircon dates are reported from two bentonites around the Hangenberg Event in South China. • The Hangenberg Event occurred at 360.47 ± 0.68 Ma in the Daposhang section. • New age for Devonian–Carboniferous boundary overlaps with that in GTS 2020.
