Objective To observe the protective effect of 2% taurine on corneal endothelial cells injured by benzalkonium chloride in rats. Methods Six piece of corneal endodermis and elastic layer tissue slices were prepared from 6 eyes of 3 SPF SD rats and randomly divided into three groups. The corneal endothelial cells of rats were cultured by tissue block culture for 1 day, then the control group cells were added with 2% taurine solution, while the experimental group cells were added with 2% taurine solution and 0.01% or 0.03% benzalkonium chloride solution. After 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 days of continuous culture, the growth of corneal endothelial cells in each group was observed under an inverted microscope, and the morphology of endothelial cells was observed under an optical microscope after Wright staining. Results Treated with 0.01% benzalkonium chloride and 2% taurine for 1 day, polygonal endothelial cells appeared on the edge of corneal tissue mass, and the cells were transparent. After 2 days, the number of polygonal cells increased, and there was no fusion growth between cells. After 3 days, the number of polygonal cells decreased and no mitotic signs were observed in endothelial cells. After 4 days, the endothelial nuclei were deeply stained and polygonal cells were rare. After 5 days, the number of endothelial cells decreased, and cell body shrinkage and death occurred. In the experimental group treated with 0.03% benzalammonium chloride and 2% taurine for 1 day, no endothelial cell growth was observed and the cells were sparsely-scattered. In control group, polygonal endothelial cells and a few endothelium-like polygon cells appeared at the edge of tissue blocks after 1 day. After 3 days, the number of polygonal cells at the edge of tissue blocks increased, and there was a phenomenon of gradual fusion growth. After 5 days, the number of endothelial cells increased, and the cells were mostly hexagonal. After 8 days, the endothelial cells formed large sheets, the cell bodies were hexagonal or round, and the nuclei were divided. The growth of corneal endothelial cells in the left and right eyes was uniform, and there was no significant difference in the morphology of the left and right eye endothelial cells in the 0.01% and 0.03% benzalammonium chloride treatment groups and the control group. Conclusion 2% taurine had no protective effect on corneal endothelial cells injured by benzalammonium chloride.

Migratory birds experience changes in their environment and diet during seasonal migrations, thus requiring interactions between diet and gut microbes. Understanding the co‐evolution of the host and gut microbiota is critical for elucidating the rapid adaptations of avian gut microbiota. However, dynamics of gut microbial adaptations concerning elevational migratory behavior, which is prevalent but understudied in montane birds remain poorly understood. We focused on the Himalayan bluetail (Tarsiger rufilatus) in the montane forests of Mt. Gongga to understand the diet–gut microbial adaptations of elevational migratory birds. Our findings indicate that elevational migratory movements can rapidly alter gut microbial composition and function within a month. There was a significant interaction between an animal‐based diet and gut microbiota across migration stages, underscoring the importance of diet in shaping microbial communities. Furthermore, the gut microbial composition of T. rufilatus may be potentially altered by high‐altitude acclimatization. An increase in fatty acid and amino acid metabolism was observed in response to low temperatures and limited resources, resulting in enhanced energy extraction and nutrient utilization. Moreover, microbial communities in distinct gut segments varied in relative abundance and responses to environmental changes. While the bird jejunum exhibited greater susceptibility to food and environmental fluctuations, there was no significant difference in metabolic capacity among gut segments. This study provides initial evidence of rapid diet–gut microbial changes in distinct gut segments of elevational migratory birds and highlights the importance of seasonal sample collection. Our findings provide a deeper understanding of the unique high‐altitude adaptation patterns of the gut microbiota for montane elevational migratory birds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zearalenone (ZEA) is present worldwide as a serious contaminant of food and feed and causes male reproductive toxicity. The implication of paraptosis, which is a nonclassical paradigm of cell death, is unclear in ZEA-induced male reproductive disorders. In this study, the toxic effects of ZEA on the blood-testis barrier (BTB) and the related mechanisms of paraptosis were detected in goats. ZEA exposure, in vivo, caused a significant decrease in spermatozoon quality, the destruction of seminiferous tubules, and damage to the BTB integrity. Furthermore, ZEA exposure to Sertoli cells (SCs) in vitro showed similar dysfunction in structure and barrier function. Importantly, the formation of massive cytoplasmic vacuoles in ZEA-treated SCs corresponded to the highly swollen and dilative endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and paraptosis inhibition significantly alleviated ZEA-induced SC death and vacuolization, which indicated the important contribution of paraptosis in ZEA-induced BTB damage. Meanwhile, the expression of ER stress marker proteins was increased after ZEA treatment but decreased under the inhibition of paraptosis. The vacuole formation and SC death, induced by ZEA, were remarkably blocked by ER stress inhibition. In conclusion, these results facilitate the exploration of the mechanisms of the SC paraptosis involved in ZEA-induced BTB damage in goats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Enhancing circulation efficiency and helping green development have become essential requirements for ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. Based on the panel data of China's Yellow River Basin from 2011 to 2020, the static and dynamic efficiencies of the logistics industry in the nine provinces of the Yellow River Basin were measured by using the super-efficiency SBM model and the Malmquist index model. Then, government support, economic level, industrial agglomeration, technological innovation, openness, and environmental regulation were selected as antecedent variables; the efficiency value of the logistics industry in the Yellow River Basin was selected as the outcome variable; and combined with the fsQCA method, analyzed from a group perspective, four group paths were obtained: economic openness-type path, technology industry-type path, government intervention-type path, and non-environmental-regulation path. The conclusion can deepen the systematic understanding of the group path of the logistics industry and can provide theoretical guidance for regions to improve the efficiency of the logistics industry and promote green development.
