Abstract

Room temperature ionic liquids are salts which are molten at or around room temperature without any added solvent or solution. In bulk they exhibit glass like dependence of conductivity with temperature as well as coupling of structural and transport properties. Interfaces of ionic liquids have been found to induce structural changes with evidence of long range structural ordering on solid-liquid interfaces spanning length scales of $10-100$nm. Our aim is to characterize the influence of confinement on the structural properties of ionic liquids. We present first conductivity measurements on ionic liquids of the imidazolium type in single conical glass nanopores with confinements as low as tens of nanometers. We probe glassy dynamics of ionic liquids in a large range of temperatures ($-20$ to $70^\circ$C) and nanopore opening sizes ($20-600$nm) in silica glass nanocapillaries. Our results indicate no long range freezing effects due to confinement in nanopores with diameters as low as $20$nm. The studied ionic liquids are found to behave as glass like liquids across the whole accessible confinement size and temperature range.

Main observation and conclusion: Water behavior in nanoconfined hydrophobic environment is different from that in the bulk, which greatly influences mass transport. Hydrophobicity switching of nanopores showing great potential for controlled water or ion transport has been realized through several methods, especially the voltage‐triggered wetting/dewetting inspired by biological ion channels. However, in the hydrophobic silanized nanopores, the finite ionic current is still observed and the ion transport mechanism is not yet clear. Here, we explore the ion transport behavior in the hydrophobic silanized anodic aluminum oxide (AAO). Ion transport through this hydrophobic membrane is confirmed, although no aqueous pathway was observed. Results show that ions transport through the cross‐linked silane layer on the inner surface. It is revealed that metal ions, not just the protons or hydroxide ions, are involved in the ion transport driven by external electric field. This study provides a new insight into the ion transport in nanoconfined hydrophobic environment, which is helpful to understand the biological processes and design new nanofluidic devices. 33. Bridging Ionic Current Rectification and Resistive-Pulse Sensing for Reliable Wide-Linearity Detection

Abstract

As two mainstream ionic detection techniques, ionic current rectification (ICR) suffers from large fluctuations in trace level detection, while resistive-pulse sensing (RPS) encounters easy clogs in high-concentration detection. By rationally matching the nanopore size with the DNA tetrahedron (TDN), this work bridges the two techniques to achieve reliable detection with wide linearity. As a representative analyte, miRNA-10b could specifically combine with and release TDN from the interior wall, which thus induced the simultaneous generation of distinct ICR and RPS signals. The ICR signals could be attributed to the balance between the effective orifice and surface charge density of the inner wall, while the RPS signals were induced by the complex of miRNA-10b and TDN passing through the nanopore. Such an operation contributed to a wide detection range of 1 fM–1 nM with a good linearity. The feasibility of this method is also validated in single-cell and real plasma detection.
