7. Accurate iteration-free mixed-stabilised formulation for laminar incompressible Navier-Stokes: Applications to fluid-structure interaction

Abstract

Stabilised mixed velocity-pressure formulations are one of the widely-used finite element schemes for computing the numerical solutions of laminar incompressible Navier-Stokes. In these formulations, the Newton-Raphson scheme is employed to solve the nonlinearity in the convection term. One fundamental issue with this approach is the computational cost incurred in the Newton-Raphson iterations at every load/time step. In this paper, we present an iteration-free mixed finite element formulation for incompressible Navier-Stokes that preserves second-order temporal accuracy of the generalised-alpha and related schemes for both velocity and pressure fields. First, we demonstrate the second-order temporal accuracy using numerical convergence studies for an example with a manufactured solution. Later, we assess the accuracy and the computational benefits of the proposed scheme by studying the benchmark example of flow past a fixed circular cylinder. Towards showcasing the applicability of the proposed technique in a wider context, the inf-sup stable P2-P1 pair for the formulation without stabilisation is also considered. Finally, the resulting benefits of using the proposed scheme for fluid-structure interaction problems is illustrated using two benchmark examples in fluid-flexible structure interaction., Comment: 26 pages

Abstract

This work presents a partitioned solution procedure to compute shape gradients in fluid-structure interaction (FSI) using black-box adjoint solvers. Special attention is paid to project the gradients onto the undeformed configuration. This is due to the mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation of large-displacement FSI in this work. Adjoint FSI problem is partitioned as an assembly of well-known adjoint fluid and structural problems, without requiring expensive cross-derivatives. The sub-adjoint problems are coupled with each other by augmenting the target functions with auxiliary functions, independent of the concrete choice of the underlying adjoint formulations. The auxiliary functions are linear force-based or displacement-based functionals which are readily available in well-established single-disciplinary adjoint solvers. Adjoint structural displacements, adjoint fluid displacements, and domain-based adjoint sensitivities of the fluid are the coupling fields to be exchanged between the adjoint solvers. A reduced formulation is also derived for the case of boundary-based adjoint shape sensitivity analysis for fluids. Numerical studies show that the complete formulation computes accurate shape gradients whereas inaccuracies appear in the reduced gradients, specially in regions of strong flow gradients and near singularities. Nevertheless, reduced gradient formulations are found to be a compromise between computational costs and accuracy. Mapping techniques including nearest element interpolation and the mortar method are studied in computational adjoint FSI. It is numerically shown that the mortar method does not introduce spurious oscillations in primal and sensitivity fields along non-matching interfaces, unlike the nearest element interpolation.

9. Low Order Finite Element Methods for the Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard Equations

Abstract

A computationally efficient, low order finite element formulation is developed for modelling the Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations, which have been established as a promising phase field modelling approach for simulation of immiscible multiphase flows. The present study suggests that traditional Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard models do not allow for surface tension effects to be neglected due to the presence of the surface tension parameter in the Cahn-Hilliard equation. This motivates the proposed formulation, which allows surface tension effects to be changed without affecting the behaviour of the phase transport. Two methods are proposed: The first uses stabilised SUPG/PSPG linear elements, while the second is based on mixed Taylor-Hood elements. The proposed models are applied to a number of benchmark and example problems, including both capillary regime in which surface tension effects are dominant, and inertial regime in which surface tension effects are negligibly small. 29. An External Focus of Attention Enhances Motor Learning in Children with Intellectual Disabilities

Abstract

Background: The present study examined whether the learning benefits of an external focus of attention (i.e. on the movement effect) relative to an internal focus (i.e. on the movement), found previously in non-disabled children and adults would also be found in children with intellectual disabilities (IDs). Methods: Participants ("n" = 24; average age: 12.2 years) with mild intellectual deficiency (IQ = 51-69) practiced throwing beanbags at a target. In the external focus group, participants were instructed to direct their attention to the movement of the beanbag, while in the internal focus group, participants were asked to direct their attention to the movement of their hand. The practice phase consisted of 40 trials, and attentional focus reminders were given after every third trial. Learning was assessed 1 day later by retention and transfer (greater target distance) tests, each consisting of 10 trials. No focus reminders were given on that day. Results: The external focus group demonstrated more effective learning than the internal focus group, as evidenced by more accurate tosses on the transfer test. Conclusions: The present findings show that instructions that induce an external focus of attention can enhance motor learning in children with IDs. (Contains 2 figures.)

35. Functional Variability Increases With a Distal External Focus

Abstract

A recent meta-analysis on attentional focus (Chua, Jimenez-Diaz, Lewthwaite, Kim, & Wulf, 2021) showed that focusing on an intended movement effect that is farther away from the body (i.e., distal external focus) results in performance benefits relative to focusing on an effect in greater proximity to the body (i.e., proximal external focus) or the body itself (i.e., internal focus). The present study examined whether this distance effect was associated with differences in functional variability. Skilled volleyball players (n = 20) performed sixty overhand volleyball serves to a target. Using a within-participants design, an internal focus (“Focus on your hand”), proximal external focus (“Focus on contacting the middle of the ball”), and distal external focus (“Focus on hitting the bullseye) were compared. The distal focus condition resulted in significantly higher accuracy scores than did the proximal and internal focus conditions. To examine whether this was a result of increased functional variability, 3D kinematic data were collected by a 12-camera VICON motion capture system, and the uncontrolled manifold analysis (UCM) was used. Shoulder, elbow, and wrist joint angles served as elemental variables whereas the magnitude and angle of ball velocity was calculated as the performance variable. In line with our hypothesis, functional variability was greatest in the distal focus condition as shown by a significant increase in VUCM (performance-stabilizing variance) and significant decrease in VORT (performance-destabilizing variance) compared to the proximal and internal focus conditions. These findings suggest that a distal external focus on the task goal enhances movement outcomes by optimizing compensatory coordination of body parts.

Abstract

This work presents a partitioned solution procedure to compute shape gradients in fluid-structure interaction (FSI) using black-box adjoint solvers. Special attention is paid to project the gradients onto the undeformed configuration. This is due to the mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation of large-displacement FSI in this work. Adjoint FSI problem is partitioned as an assembly of well-known adjoint fluid and structural problems, without requiring expensive cross-derivatives. The sub-adjoint problems are coupled with each other by augmenting the target functions with auxiliary functions, independent of the concrete choice of the underlying adjoint formulations. The auxiliary functions are linear force-based or displacement-based functionals which are readily available in well-established single-disciplinary adjoint solvers. Adjoint structural displacements, adjoint fluid displacements, and domain-based adjoint sensitivities of the fluid are the coupling fields to be exchanged between the adjoint solvers. A reduced formulation is also derived for the case of boundary-based adjoint shape sensitivity analysis for fluids. Numerical studies show that the complete formulation computes accurate shape gradients whereas inaccuracies appear in the reduced gradients, specially in regions of strong flow gradients and near singularities. Nevertheless, reduced gradient formulations are found to be a compromise between computational costs and accuracy. Mapping techniques including nearest element interpolation and the mortar method are studied in computational adjoint FSI. It is numerically shown that the mortar method does not introduce spurious oscillations in primal and sensitivity fields along non-matching interfaces, unlike the nearest element interpolation.

Abstract

In the presence of strong added mass effects, partitioned solution strategies for incompressible fluid-structure interaction are known to lack robustness and computational efficiency. A number of strategies have been proposed to address this challenge. However, these strategies are often complicated or restricted to certain problem classes and generally require intrusive modifications of existing software. In this work, the well-known Dirichlet-Neumann coupling is revisited and a new combined two-field relaxation strategy is proposed. A family of efficient staggered schemes based crucially on a force predictor is formulated alongside the classical iterative approach. Both methodologies are rigorously analyzed on the basis of a linear model problem derived from a simplified fluid-conveying elastic tube. The investigation suggests that both the robustness and the efficiency of a partitioned Dirichlet-Neumann coupling scheme can be improved by a relatively small nonintrusive modification of a standard implementation. The relevance of the model problem analysis for finite element-based computational fluid-structure interaction is demonstrated in detail for a submerged cylinder subject to an external force.
