1. Multistep severe plastic deformation to achieve non-rare earth bulk magnets with high {\alpha}-MnBi phase content

Abstract

The ferromagnetic {\alpha}-MnBi phase as non-rare earth magnetic material has gained increasing interest, but fabrication of large volumes containing a significant amount of {\alpha}-MnBi is still challenging. Targeting successful processing strategies, we apply multistep severe plastic deformation with intermediate magnetic field assisted annealing. The subsequent severe plastic deformation renewed the high amount of material defects and lead to microstructural refinement of the previously formed {\alpha}-MnBi phase. Thus, {\alpha}-MnBi phase content is enhanced during final annealing. Secondly, the magnetic coercivity increases. These results suggest that further optimization will pave the way towards non-rare-earth bulk magnetic materials with enhanced {\alpha}-MnBi phase content.

Abstract

Severe plastic deformation using high-pressure torsion of ternary Cu-based materials (CuFeCo and CuFeNi) was used to fabricate bulk samples with a nanocrystalline microstructure. The goal was to produce materials featuring the granular giant magnetoresistance effect, requiring interfaces between ferro- and nonmagnetic materials. This magnetic effect was found for both ternary systems; adequate subsequent annealing had a positive influence. The as-deformed states, as well as microstructural changes upon thermal treatments, were studied using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. Deducing from electron microscopy, a single-phase structure was observed for all as-deformed samples, indicating the formation of a supersaturated solid solution. However, judging from the presence of the granular giant-magnetoresistive effect, small ferromagnetic particles have to be present. The highest drop in room temperature resistivity (2.45% at 1790 kA/m) was found in Cu62Fe19Ni19 after annealing for 1 h at 400 {\deg}C. Combining the results of classical microstructural studies and magnetic measurements, insights into the evolution of ferromagnetic particles are accessible.

5. A new approach to evaluate the elastic modulus of metallic foils

Abstract

The accurate determination of the elastic properties is non-trivial for metallic foils. The measured elastic modulus is often described in literature as significantly smaller than the respective modulus of the bulk counterparts. This paper describes a straight forward way to minimize the influence of the measurement on the calculated values using a standard tensile testing device combined with a laser speckle extensometer and advanced data evaluation. The elasticmodulus obtained with a monotonic tensile procedure is compared to values obtained frommultiple loading unloading cycles in the elastic regime. The latter were found to lead to more reproducible and reasonable values with significantly smaller standard deviations. To enable interpretation of the modulus values electron backscatter diffraction and X ray diffraction were used to emphasize the effects of texture and microstructure. Two different electrodeposited copper foilswere characterized since copper iswidely used in many industrial applications.

Abstract

Background The high number of bioeconomy (BE) policies and strategies indicates the interest in the BE in many nations. The development of the BE holds opportunities but also risks for sustainability. Thus, the future development of a sustainable BE should be based on coherent policy frameworks. There are already links between private governance approaches and public policy frameworks that might support each other for this purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate how the current EU BE policy frameworks consider sustainability aspects and if non-governmental governance approaches could support their enhancement. Methods An inventory of BE policy documents on EU and EU member state levels relevant to sustainability was conducted applying desktop research. Major sustainability risk perceptions in the BE sectors were identified. We provide a list of sustainability risks within different BE sectors, based on an expert survey. In a qualitative evaluation, most commonly identified sustainability requirements in policy documents were benchmarked against most important sustainability risk perceptions. Results Sustainability requirements have been identified in 56% of the policy documents. The influence of the policy frameworks on the industry was found to be rather low. Specific targets and goals are included in 72% of the analysed BE policy documents, but only 50% are quantifiable. Identification of major sustainability risks revealed that in the biomass production stage, mostly environmental risks are most relevant. A "hot spot sector" with accumulated sustainability risk perceptions or a tendency to higher risk levels was not identified. Most important sustainability risk perceptions matched with requirements in policy documents, but requirements were mostly stated in a noncommittal way. Abstract

To investigate the quality of treatment plans of spinal radiosurgery derived from different planning and delivery systems. The comparisons include robotic delivery and intensity modulated arc therapy (IMAT) approaches. Multiple centers with equal systems were used to reduce a bias based on individual's planning abilities. The study used a series of three complex spine lesions to maximize the difference in plan quality among the various approaches.

49. The Effect of Nonlinearity on Determined Parameters of Gun Propellant Burn Rate Models

Abstract

The pressure dependent linear burning velocity of gun propellants is described by burn rate models, e. g. Vieille's law with prefactor v and pressure exponent a. To determine the burn rate parameters closed vessel experiments are conducted, the resulting p(t) curves are analysed and a and v are determined by a curve fitting procedure. It is shown that due to the nonlinearity of the pressure dependence in Vieille's law the objective function exhibits a topography which leads to an almost linear correlation between determined burn rate parameters a and v. This is mathematically equivalent to the so called kinetic compensation effect known from thermal analysis. Therefore this linear correlation is called the ballistic compensation effect by the author. If this effect is taken into account different burn rate measurements that are seemingly non compatible can be unified.
