1. Curricular Implications of Virtual World Technology: A Review of Business Applications

Abstract

As business organizations grow increasingly virtual, traditional principles of organizational communication require examination and modification. This article considers the curricular implications of the growing business uses of virtual world technology through three different lenses--students as employee-users, students as strategic designers and decision makers, and students as theorists. The instructor's approach to communication principles relevant to persistent virtual worlds should be grounded in current and anticipated business applications. Emerging business practice provides guidance regarding the communication principles and skills that might be required of students entering careers in a contemporary business world of networked, digitized, and virtually enhanced communication.

31. Distribution and abundance of the octopus Eledone cirrhosa in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Central Mediterranean

Abstract

Distribution and abundance of the horned octopus Eledone cirrhosa in the Tyrrhenian Sea are described on the basis of stratified-random bottom trawl surveys in spring and summer of the years 1985–1987. Specimens were caught between 25 and 630 m depth (higher densities between 50 and 200 m depth); mature males were found to prefer deeper bottoms than mature females. Young specimens occurred in spring samples from the Western Ligurian Sea and in summer samples from the Lower Tyrrhenian Sea, but were scarcely represented in the Higher Tyrrhenian Sea. Thus recruitment seems to be progressively delayed later in the season from north to south. The greatest abundance was recorded in the Higher Tyrrhenian Sea; wide seasonal variations of minimum stock biomass estimates have been observed and total biomass decreased from 1985 to 1987 in the surveyed areas.

Abstract

Errors in analysis using natural marks have been recognised since the early development of mark-recapture techniques. In this nine-year study, the mark types present on Cuvier's beaked whales Ziphius cavirostris in the Mediterranean Sea were categorised in order to assess the reliability of natural marks for long-term photo-identification studies. Mark prevalence, abundance and gain/loss rates among age/sex classes were investigated. Results showed that Cuvier's beaked whales were extensively marked (96% of population; mean = 48 marks per individual, range 0-169), with up to 10 different mark types. However, only five mark types should be considered reliable: notch, large scar, back indentation, medium scrape and large stripe. Marks caused by intraspecific interaction were the most abundant and prevalent mark types. In high-quality photographs, 71% of the population was reliably marked, but reliable marks were unevenly distributed within the population and their prevalence appeared to be strongly correlated to age and sex of individuals. The gain rate of scrapes that could be used reliably for identification was six times higher in mature males than females of the same age. This was the case for mature as well as immature males, suggesting that aggressive interaction among males may start early in their life, before reaching maturity. This difference between sexes may cause an over-representation of males in a typical photo-identification database, especially among immature individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. The efficiency of immunolabel on Lowicryl sections compared to theoretical predictions.

Abstract

The surface of thin sections of aldehyde-fixed biological material shows a specimen-related relief of 2-6 nm with Lowicryl. Epon sections are about three times smoother. The relief is the consequence of thin-sectioning being in reality a cleavage. Epitopes are supposed to be laid open (or set free) because cleavage follows the interfaces between protein and Lowicryl. We have developed a simple theory on this basis and have theoretically estimated the efficiency of on-section labeling and compared it with experimental data. For randomly dispersed proteins in cytoplasm, Lowicryl sections will yield significant label only when the concentration of the antigen is about 10 microM or more. The complex situation of more compact proteins, as represented by fibers, sheets, and biological membranes is discussed and the difficulty of significant calculations is explained. Pre-embedding labeling and melted cryosections should give 10-30 times more label. The possible reasons for the observed much smaller gain of not more than two to three times are discussed.

40. Length and shape variants of the bacteriophage T4 head: mutations in the scaffolding core genes 68 and 22

Abstract

The shape and size of the bacteriophage T4 head are dependent on genes that determine the scaffolding core and the shell of the prohead. Mutants of the shell proteins affect mainly the head length. Two recently identified genes (genes 67 and 68) and one already known gene (gene 22), whose products are scaffold constituents, have been investigated. Different types of mutants were shown to strongly influence the proportion of aberrantly shaped particles. By model building, these shape variants could be represented as polyhedral bodies derived from icosahedra, through outgrowths along different polyhedral axes. The normal, prolate particle is obtained by elongation along a fivefold axis. The mutations of the three core genes (genes 67, 68, and 22) affect the width mainly by lateral outgrowths of the prolate particle, although small and large isometric particles are also found. Many of the aberrant particles are multitailed, suggesting a correlation between tail attachment sites and shape.
