Observations by the Parker Solar Probe mission of the solar wind at about 35.7 solar radii reveal the existence of whistler wave packets with frequencies below 0.1 f/fce (20-80 Hz in the spacecraft frame). These waves often coincide with local minima of the magnetic field magnitude or with sudden deflections of the magnetic field that are called switchbacks. Their sunward propagation leads to a significant Doppler frequency downshift from 200-300 Hz to 20-80 Hz (from 0.2 f/fce to 0.5 f/fce). The polarization of these waves varies from quasi-parallel to significantly oblique with wave normal angles that are close to the resonance cone. Their peak amplitude can be as large as 2 to 4 nT. Such values represent approximately 10% of the background magnetic field, which is considerably more than what is observed at 1 a.u. Recent numerical studies show that such waves may potentially play a key role in breaking the heat flux and scattering the Strahl population of suprathermal electrons into a halo population.

We present STEREO observations within 1500 proton gyroradii of 12 interplanetary shocks, with long-duration burst mode electric field acquisition by S/WAVES enabling observation of the evolution of waves throughout the entire ramp of interplanetary shocks. The shocks are low Mach number ($M_{f} \sim $1--5), quasi-perpendicular ($\theta_{Bn} \geq 45^{\circ}$), with beta ($\beta$) $\sim $0.2--1.8. High variability in frequency, amplitude, and wave mode is observed upstream, downstream, and in shock ramps. Observations in every region include ion acoustic-like waves, electron cyclotron drift instability driven waves, electrostatic solitary waves, and high frequency whistler mode waves. We also show for the first time the existence of "dispersive" electrostatic waves with frequencies in the ion acoustic range and the first observations of electron cyclotron drift instability (ECDI) driven waves at interplanetary shocks. Large amplitude waves are bursty and seen in all three regions with amplitudes from $\sim$5 to $>$ 200 mV/m. All wave modes are more commonly observed downstream of the shocks than upstream of them, usually within $\sim$ 63000 km ($\sim 1500 \rho_{gi}$) of the ramp.

We present multi-satellite observations indicating a strong correlation between large amplitude radiation belt whistler-mode waves and relativistic electron precipitation. On separate occasions during the Wind petal orbits and STEREO phasing orbits, Wind and STEREO recorded intense whistler-mode waves in the outer nightside equatorial radiation belt with peak-to-peak amplitudes exceeding 300 mV/m. During these intervals of intense wave activity, SAMPEX recorded relativistic electron microbursts in near magnetic conjunction with Wind and STEREO. The microburst precipitation exhibits a bursty temporal structure similar to that of the observed large amplitude wave packets, suggesting a connection between the two phenomena. Simulation studies corroborate this idea, showing that nonlinear wave--particle interactions may result in rapid energization and scattering on timescales comparable to those of the impulsive relativistic electron precipitation., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the authors

We present a statistical study of the characteristics of very large amplitude whistler waves inside the terrestrial magnetosphere using waveform capture data from the Wind spacecraft as an addition of the study by Kellogg et al., [2010b]. We observed 244(65) whistler waves using electric(magnetic) field data from the Wind spacecraft finding ~40%(~62%) of the waves have peak-to-peak amplitudes of >/- 50 mV/m(>/- 0.5 nT). We present an example waveform capture of the largest magnetic field amplitude (>/- 8 nT peak-to-peak) whistler wave ever reported in the radiation belts. The estimated Poynting flux magnitude associated with this wave is >/- 300 microW/m^2, roughly four orders of magnitude above previous estimates. Such large Poynting flux values are consistent with rapid energization of electrons. The majority of the largest amplitude whistlers occur during magnetically active periods (AE > 200 nT). The waves were observed to exhibit a broad range of propagation angles with respect to the magnetic field, 0{\deg}

A three-dimensional (3-D), self-consistent code is employed to solve for the static potential structure surrounding a spacecraft in a high photoelectron environment. The numerical solutions show that, under certain conditions, a spacecraft can take on a negative potential in spite of strong photoelectron currents. The negative potential is due to an electrostatic barrier near the surface of the spacecraft that can reflect a large fraction of the photoelectron flux back to the spacecraft. This electrostatic barrier forms if (1) the photoelectron density at the surface of the spacecraft greatly exceeds the ambient plasma density, (2) the spacecraft size is significantly larger than local Debye length of the photoelectrons, and (3) the thermal electron energy is much larger than the characteristic energy of the escaping photoelectrons. All of these conditions are present near the Sun. The numerical solutions also show that the spacecraft's negative potential can be amplified by an ion wake. The negative potential of the ion wake prevents secondary electrons from escaping the part of spacecraft in contact with the wake. We present Van Allen Probe observations of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves triggered solely due to individual substorm-injected ions in the absence of storms or compressions of the magnetosphere during 9 August 2015. The time at which the injected ions are observed directly corresponds to the onset of EMIC waves at the location of Van Allen Probe A (L = 5.5 and 18:06 magnetic local time). The injection was also seen at geosynchronous orbit by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite and Los Alamos National Laboratory spacecraft, and the westward(eastward) drift of ions(electrons) was monitored by Los Alamos National Laboratory spacecraft at different local times. The azimuthal location of the injection was determined by tracing the injection signatures backward intime to their origin assuming a dipolar magnetic field of Earth. The center of this injection location wasdetermined to be close to 20:00 magnetic local time. Geostationary Operational Environmental Satelliteand ground magnetometer responses confirm substorm onset at approximately the same local time.The observed EMIC wave onsets at Van Allen Probe were also associated with a magnetic field decrease.The arrival of anisotropic ions along with the decrease in the magnetic field favors the growth of the EMICwave instability based on linear theory analysis.

Two of the largest geomagnetic storms of the last decade were witnessed in 2015. On 17 March 2015, a coronal mass ejection-driven event occurred with a Dst (Disturbance Storm Time Ring Current Index) value reaching 223 nanoteslas. On 22 June 2015 another strong storm (Dst reaching 204 nanoteslas) was recorded. These two storms each produced almost total loss of radiation belt high-energy (E (Energy) greater than or approximately equal to 1 millielectronvolt) electron fluxes. Following the dropouts of radiation belt fluxes there were complex and rather remarkable recoveries of the electrons extending up to nearly 10 millielectronvolts in kinetic energy. The energized outer zone electrons showed a rich variety of pitch angle features including strong butterfly distributions with deep minima in flux at alpha equals 90 degrees. However, despite strong driving of outer zone earthward radial diffusion in these storms, the previously reported impenetrable barrier at L (L-shell magnetic field line value) approximately equal to 2.8 was pushed inward, but not significantly breached, and no E (Energy) greater than or approximately equal to 2.0 millielectronvolts electrons were seen to pass through the radiation belt slot region to reach the inner Van Allen zone. Overall, these intense storms show a wealth of novel features of acceleration, transport, and loss that are demonstrated in the present detailed analysis.

Magnetopause shadowing and wave-particle interactions are recognized as the two primary mechanisms for losses of electrons from the outer radiation belt. We investigate these mechanisms, sing satellite observations both in interplanetary space and within the magnetosphere and particle drift modeling. Two interplanetary shocks sheaths impinged upon the magnetopause causing a relativistic electron flux dropout. The magnetic cloud (C) and interplanetary structure sunward of the MC had primarily northward magnetic field, perhaps leading to a concomitant lack of substorm activity and a 10 day long quiescent period. The arrival of two shocks caused an unusual electron flux dropout. Test-particle simulations have shown 2 to 5 MeV energy, equatorially mirroring electrons with initial values of L 5.5can be lost to the magnetosheath via magnetopause shadowing alone. For electron losses at lower L-shells, coherent chorus wave-driven pitch angle scattering and ULF wave-driven radial transport have been shownto be viable mechanisms.
