Crustal quakes of highly magnetized neutron stars can disrupt their magnetospheres, triggering energetic phenomena like X-ray and fast radio bursts. Understanding plasma wave dynamics in these extreme environments is vital for predicting energy transport across scales to the radiation length. This study models relativistic plasma wave interaction in magnetar magnetospheres with force-free electrodynamics simulations. For propagation along curved magnetic field lines, we observe the continuous conversion of Alfvén waves to fast magnetosonic (FMS) waves. The conversion efficiency can be up to three times higher when counter-propagating Alfvén waves interact in the equatorial region. Alfvén waves generate FMS waves of twice their frequency during their first crossing of the magnetosphere. After the initial transient burst of FMS waves, Alfvén waves convert to FMS waves periodically, generating variations on timescales of the magnetospheric Alfvén wave crossing time. This decaying FMS wave tail carries a significant portion (half) of the total energy emitted. Plastic damping of "bouncing" Alfvén waves by the magnetar crust has minimal impact on the FMS efficiency. We discuss the implications of the identified wave phenomena for magnetar observations. Outgoing FMS waves can develop electric zones, potential sources of coherent radiation. Long wavelength FMS waves could generate FRBs through reconnection beyond the light cylinder. The Rapid Burster is a unique neutron star low-mass X-ray binary system, showing both thermonuclear v-I and accretion-driven Type-II X-ray bursts. Recent studies have demonstrated how coordinated observations of X-ray and radio variability can constrain jet properties of accreting neutron stars – particularly when the X-ray variability is dominated by discrete changes. We present a simultaneous very large array, Swift , and INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory observing campaign of the Rapid Burster to investigate whether its jet responds to Type-II bursts. We observe the radio counterpart of the X-ray binary at its faintest-detected radio luminosity, while the X-ray observations reveal prolific, fast X-ray bursting. A time-resolved analysis reveals that the radio counterpart varies significantly between observing scans, displaying a fractional variability of |$38 \pm 5$|  per cent. The radio faintness of the system prevents the robust identification of a causal relation between individual Type-II bursts and the evolution of the radio jet. However, based on a comparison of its low-radio luminosity with archival Rapid Burster observations and other accreting neutron stars, and on a qualitative assessment of the X-ray and radio light curves, we explore the presence of a tentative connection between bursts and jet: i.e. the Type-II bursts may weaken or strengthen the jet. The former of those two scenarios would fit with magnetorotational jet models; we discuss three lines of future research to establish this potential relation between Type-II bursts and jets more confidently. A new type of cosmological transient, dubbed fast radio bursts (FRBs), was recently discovered. The source of FRBs is still unknown. One possible scenario of an FRB is the collapse of a spinning supra-massive neutron star. Zhang (2014 , ApJ, 780, L21) suggests that the collapse can happen shortly (hundreds to thousands of seconds) after the birth of supra-massive neutron stars. The signatures can be visible in X-ray afterglows of long and short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). For instance, a sudden drop (decay index steeper than |$-3$| to |$-9$|⁠) from a shallow decay (decay index shallower than |$-1$|⁠) in the X-ray afterglow flux can indicate such an event. We selected the X-ray afterglow light curves with a steep decay after the shallow decay phase from the Swift/XRT GRB catalog. We analyzed when the decay index changed suddenly by fitting these light curves to double power-law functions and compared them with the onset of FRBs. The accelerated electrons during solar flares produce radio bursts and nonthermal X-ray signatures. The quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) and fine structures in spatial–spectral–temporal space in radio bursts depend on the emission mechanism and the local conditions, such as magnetic fields, electron density, and pitch-angle distribution. Radio burst observations with high-frequency time resolution imaging provide excellent diagnostics. In converging magnetic field geometries, the radio bursts can be produced via the electron cyclotron maser (ECM). Recently, using observations made by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 1–2 GHz, Yu et al. reported a discovery of long-lasting auroral-like radio bursts persistent over a sunspot and interpreted them as ECM-generated emission. Here we investigate the detailed second and subsecond temporal variability of this continuous ECM source. We study the association of 5 s period QPPs with a concurrent GOES C1.5-class flare, utilizing VLA's imaging spectroscopy capability with an extremely high temporal resolution (50 ms). We use the density and magnetic field extrapolation model to constrain the ECM emission to the second harmonic O -mode. Using the delay of QPPs from X-ray emission times, combined with X-ray spectroscopy and magnetic extrapolation, we constrain the energies and pitch angles of the ECM-emitting electrons to ≈4–8 keV and >26°. Our analysis shows that the loss-cone diffusion continuously fuels the ECM via Coulomb collisions and magnetic turbulence between a length scale of 5 and 100 Mm. We conclude that the QPP occurs via the Lotka–Volterra system, where the electrons from solar flares saturate the continuously operating ECM and cause temporary oscillations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we introduced a new nonlocal complex derivative operator in fractal dimension based concurrently on the concept of "nonlocal generalized complex backward-forward coordinates" and the "product-like fractal measure". The quantization of the theory in fractal dimension leads to a higher order Schrödinger equation characterized by a higher order energy operator. As an illustration, we have discussed the cases of infinite quantum well and power-law potentials. Their associated zero-point energies were found to depend on the numerical value of the fractal dimension. For the infinite well, the decrease in zero-point energy with fractal dimension may result in the emission of large wavelengths photons observed experimentally in X-ray laser bursts emitted from the solid. We report the detection of a long X-ray burst from the ultracompact binary 4U 1850–087. The type I X-ray burst was observed on MJD 60171.65 by the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image and Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). We analyze the NICER data between MJD 60095.19 and 60177.43, which includes the observation covering parts of the long X-ray burst decay phase, i.e., 0.15–3.8 hr after the trigger. The persistent spectra are well described by a multicolor disk blackbody, with an inner temperature of ∼0.5 keV, a thermally Comptonized continuum, an asymptotic power-law photon index of Γ ∼ 2.2, and an electron temperature of kT e ∼ 20–30 keV. The mean persistent flux was around 3.8 × 10−10 erg cm−2 s−1, corresponding to a local mass accretion rate of ∼ 1 % m ̇ Edd . Part of the time-resolved burst spectra show a clear deviation from the blackbody model, which can be improved by considering the enhanced persistent emission due to the Poynting–Robertson drag or the reflected disk emission illuminated by the burst. From the burst flux during the cooling phase, we estimate the burst duration, τ ≈ 0.78 hr, the burst fluence, E b ≈ 4.1 × 1041 erg, and the ignition column depth, y ign ≈ 3.5 × 1010 g cm−2. These long X-ray burst parameters from 4U 1850–087 suggest a regime of unstable burning of a thick, pure helium layer slowly accreted from a helium donor star. Moreover, we identify 7 σ significant ∼1 keV emission lines in the burst spectra, which may originate from the surrounding accretion disk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During thermonuclear bursts, it is suspected that cooling of the corona by the burst emission may be the cause of hard X-ray deficits. Although such a deficit has been observed in nine sources, it has not been observed from 4U 1608–52, a nearby prolific burster. Therefore, the authenticity and universality of the hard X-ray deficit may be in question. To investigate this suspicion, Insight–HXMT performed cadence observations during the low/hard state of 4U 1608–52 in 2022 September and detected 10 thermonuclear X-ray bursts. Two of these bursts show a double-peaked structure in the soft X-ray band, which could be caused by the high temperature of the burst emission and a marginal photospheric radius expansion (PRE) around the burst peak time. This is indicated by their peak fluxes being up to the Eddington limit and having a large colour factor at the peak of the bursts. A hard X-ray deficit is observed at a significant level during bursts at > 30 keV. Furthermore, the fraction of this deficit shows saturation at 50 per cent for the first eight bursts. This saturation may indicate that the corona is layered and only part of the corona is cooled by the bursts: for example, the part close to the neutron star surface is cooled while the rest remains intact during bursts. This result provides a clue to the geometry of the corona. For example, a possible scenario is that the corona has two forms: a quasi-spheric corona between the neutron star and the disc and a disc corona on both surfaces of the disc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio bursts of magnetically active stars reveal the intensity and activity of the stellar magnetic field. They may also be related to the planets around the stars. We monitored a radio-active star, AD Leonis, 3000 s d−1 for 17 d in 2020 November, and 5000 s d−1 for 5 d in 2023 July with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Based on the simultaneous flux increases in Stokes I and Stokes V, one left-hand circular polarized radio burst is identified. The |$\sim 50~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| degree of circular polarization indicates the burst being originated from non-thermal radiation related to the stellar magnetic field. Combining the newly discovered burst with previous observations of radio and X-ray bursts from AD Leonis, we did a periodicity analysis for the 49 bursts in total. No periodicity with confidence level >3σ is found, while a candidate period of 3.04 d at ≈2σ confidence level is presented and discussed. Results of recent FAST observations and the periodicity analysis suggest a more compact campaign of observation towards this source, from which a more optimistic result of period search could be achieved. It was recently discovered that the time correlations of repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) are similar to earthquake aftershocks. Motivated by the association between FRBs and magnetars, here we report correlation function analyses in the time-energy space for the 563 periodic radio pulses and the 579 X-ray short bursts from the magnetar SGR 1935+2154, which is known to have generated FRBs. Although radio pulses are concentrated near the fixed phase of the rotational cycle, we find that when multiple pulses occur within a single cycle, their correlation properties (aftershock production probability, aftershock rate decaying in power of time, and more) are similar to those of extragalactic FRBs and earthquakes. A possible interpretation is that the radio pulses are produced by rupture of the neutron star crust, and the first pulse within one cycle is triggered by external force periodically exerted on the crust. The periodic external force may be from the interaction of the magnetosphere with material ejected in an outburst. For X-ray bursts, we found no significant correlation signal, though correlation on the same time-scale as radio pulses may be hidden due to the long event duration. The aftershock similarity between the periodic radio pulsation and FRBs is surprising, given that the two are energetically very different, and therefore the energy sources would be different. This suggests that the essence of FRB-like phenomena is starquakes, regardless of the energy source, and it is important to search for FRB-like bursts from neutron stars with various properties or environments. Context. Thermonuclear bursts, also known as type I X-ray bursts, result from unstable nuclear burning of H/He accreted to the surface of neutron stars, lasting from tens to hundreds of seconds. Thermonuclear bursts have an important impact on accretion environments around the neutron stars, such as their disks and coronas, and are therefore a subject of extensive research. Thermonuclear bursts can be used as probes to gain a deeper understanding of the properties of their disks and coronas. Aims. By analyzing the data from Insight-HXMT and NICER, we can determine the evolution of the significance of the hard shortage in 4U 1636–536 with its spectral state, as well as the evolution of the fraction of deficit with energy. Additionally, we investigate the possible geometry and evolution of the corona in 4U 1636–536 by combining our findings with the results of spectral analysis. Methods. We extracted the light curves from the Insight-HXMT low-energy, medium-energy, and high-energy data and subtracted their pre-burst emission, which allowed us to estimate the significance of the hard shortages during the bursts. By fitting the spectra, the correlation between the persistent spectral parameters and the significance of the hard shortages could be established. The bursts were then grouped according to the spectral state in which they occurred, and the significance of the hard shortages was estimated. These in turn helped to investigate the evolution of the fraction of deficit with energy. Results. We find that during the soft state the significance of possible hard X-ray shortage in bursts is almost zero. However, in the hard state, some bursts exhibit significant shortages (> 3σ), while others do not. We attempt to establish a correlation between the significance of the hard X-ray shortage and the spectral parameters, but the data quality and the limited number of bursts prevent us from finding a strong correlation. For bursts with insignificant shortages in the soft state, the fraction of the deficit remains small. However, in the hard state the fraction of deficit for all bursts increases with energy, regardless of the significance of the shortage of individual bursts. For bursts during the hard state, we investigated the evolution of the fraction of deficit during the bursts by stacking the peaks and decays of the bursts, and find that as the flux of the bursts decreases, the energy corresponding to the maximum of the fraction of deficit becomes progressively higher. Conclusions. We explore the possible geometry and evolution of the corona suggested by the evolution of the fraction of deficit, which is obtained from the spectral and temporal analysis. Solar white-light flares are characterized by an enhancement in the optical continuum, which are usually large flares (X- and M-class flares). Here, we report a small C2.3 white-light flare (SOL2022-12-20T04:10) observed by the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory and the Chinese H α Solar Explorer (CHASE). This flare exhibits an increase of ≈ 6.4% in the photospheric Fe i line at 6569.2 Å and ≈ 3.2% in the nearby continuum. The continuum at 3600 Å also shows an enhancement of ≈ 4.7%. The white-light bright kernels are mainly located at the flare ribbons and co-spatial with nonthermal hard X-ray sources, which implies that the enhanced white-light emissions are related to nonthermal electron-beam heating. At the bright kernels, the Fe i line displays an absorption profile that has a good Gaussian shape, with a redshift up to ≈ 1.7 km s−1, while the H α line shows an emission profile having a central reversal. The H α line profile also shows a red or blue asymmetry caused by plasma flows with a velocity of several to tens of km s−1. It is interesting to find that the H α asymmetry is opposite at the conjugate footpoints. It is also found that the CHASE continuum increase seems to be related to the change in the photospheric magnetic field. We discuss spherically symmetric dynamical systems in the framework of a general model of f (R) gravity, i.e. f (R) = R e ζ R , where ζ is a dimensional quantity in squared length units [L 2 ]. We initially assume that the internal structure of such systems is governed by the Krori–Barua ansatz, alongside the presence of fluid anisotropy. By employing astrophysical observations obtained from the pulsar SAX J1748.9-2021, derived from bursting X-ray binaries located within globular clusters, we determine that ζ is approximately equal to ± 5 km 2 . In particular, the model is capable of producing stable configurations for SAX J1748.9-2021, encompassing both its geometric and physical characteristics. We show that, within the framework of f (R) gravity, the Krori–Barua ansatz establishes semi-analytical connections between the radial ( p r ) and tangential ( p t ) pressures, and the density (ρ ). These relations are described as p r ≈ v r 2 (ρ - ρ I) and p t ≈ v t 2 (ρ - ρ II) . In this context, v r and v t denote the sound speeds in the radial and tangential directions, respectively. Meanwhile, ρ I pertains to the surface density, and ρ II is derived from the model parameters. These connections are consistent with the equations of state derived from the best-fit solutions identified in the ongoing investigation. Notably, within the framework of f (R) gravity where ζ is negative, the maximum compactness, denoted as C, is inherently limited to values that do not exceed the Buchdahl limit. This contrasts with general relativity or f (R) gravity with ζ positive, where the compactness has the potential to asymptotically reach the black hole threshold ( C → 1 ). The model predictions suggest a central density that largely exceeds the saturation nuclear density, which is ρ nuc = 3 × 10 14 g/cm 3 . Also the surface density ρ I surpasses ρ nuc . We obtain a mass-radius diagram, corresponding to the boundary density, which is consistent with other observational data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4U 1702−429, an atoll-type neutron star low-mass X-ray binary, was observed twice by the AstroSat /Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counters (LAXPC-20) on 2018 April 27 and 2019 August 8. Persistent emission spectra of the source were well fitted with the model combination - constant × tbabs (thcomp × diskbb+powerlaw). The parameters obtained from the spectral analysis revealed the source to be in a hard spectral state during the observations. Time-resolved spectral analyses were performed on the three type I X-ray bursts detected from the source. Burst analysis showed that the source underwent a photospheric radius expansion. Consequently, the radius of the neutron star and distance to the source (with isotropic and anisotropic burst emission) were obtained as 12.65 |$\substack{+0.90\\-0.86}$| km and 6.92 |$\substack{+0.16\\-0.09}$| and 8.43 |$\substack{+0.20\\-0.10}$| kpc, respectively. Magnetic reconnection is understood to be the main physical process that facilitates the transformation of magnetic energy into heat, motion, and particle acceleration during solar eruptions. Yet, observational constraints on reconnection region properties and dynamics are limited due to a lack of high-cadence and high-spatial-resolution observations. By studying the evolution and morphology of postreconnected field-lines footpoints, or flare ribbons and vector photospheric magnetic field, we estimate the magnetic reconnection flux and its rate of change with time to study the flare reconnection process and dynamics of the current sheet above. We compare high-resolution imaging data to study the evolution of the fine structure in flare ribbons as ribbons spread away from the polarity inversion line. Using data from two illustrative events (one M- and X-class flare), we explore the relationship between the ribbon-front fine structure and the temporal development of bursts in the reconnection region. Additionally, we use the RibbonDB database to perform statistical analysis of 73 (C- to X-class) flares and identify quasiperiodic pulsation (QPP) properties using the Wavelet Transform. Our main finding is the discovery of QPP signatures in the derived magnetic reconnection rates in both example events and the large flare sample. We find that the oscillation periods range from 1 to 4 minutes. Furthermore, we find nearly cotemporal bursts in Hard X-ray (HXR) emission profiles. We discuss how dynamical processes in the current sheet involving plasmoids can explain the nearly cotemporal signatures of quasiperiodicity in the reconnection rates and HXR emission. We conducted an analysis of 45 bursts observed from 4U 1636−53. To investigate the mechanism behind the light-curve profiles and the impact of thermonuclear X-ray bursts on the accretion environment in accreting neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. This analysis employed both light-curve and time-resolved spectroscopy methodologies, with data collected by the Insight - Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope instrument. We found that 30 bursts exhibited similar light-curve profiles and were predominantly in the hard state, and two photospheric radius expansion (PRE) bursts were in the soft state. The light curves of most bursts did not follow a single exponential decay but displayed a dual-exponential behaviour. The initial exponent had a duration of approximately 6 s. We utilized both the standard method and the ' f a' method to fit the burst spectra. The majority of the ' f a' values exceeded 1, indicating an enhancement of the persistent emission during the burst. Under the two Comptonization components assumption, we suggest that the scattering of burst photons by the inner corona may mainly contribute to the persistent emission enhancement. We also observed an inverse correlation between the maximum f a and the persistent emission flux in the non-PRE burst. This anticorrelation suggests that when the accretion rate is lower, there is a greater enhancement of persistent emission during the burst peak. We have performed a detailed γ-ray spectroscopy study of the nucleus, 49Mn, using the GRETINA tracking array and FMA recoil separator. With this powerful new setup, low-spin excited states, which are most relevant for astrophysical processes, have been identified for the first time, including four proton-unbound levels, corresponding to key astrophysical resonances in the 48Cr(p,γ)49Mn reaction. Of these four levels, two were found to dominate the 48Cr(p,γ)49Mn reaction for temperatures, T = 0.2 − 1.4 GK, and uncertainties in the rate have been reduced by more than 3 orders of magnitude. Specifically, γ decays were observed from 1/2+ and 3/2− excited states at Ex = 2570.9(26) keV and 2595.8(21) keV, corresponding to an ℓ = 0 and ℓ = 1 resonance in the 48Cr + p system at Er = 482.9(84) keV and 507.9(83) keV, respectively. Present simulations of Type-I X-ray burst nucleosynthesis indicate that the newly defined 48Cr(p,γ) reaction rate is sufficiently fast to drive the flow of material towards higher masses in such environments. Consequently, despite the relatively long half life of 48Cr, we now do not expect a strong waiting point in the rp process at A = 48.

Abstract: We present the first survey of quiet Sun features observed in hard X-rays (HXRs), using the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray (NuSTAR), a HXR focusing optics telescope. The recent solar minimum, combined with NuSTAR’s high sensitivity, has presented a unique opportunity to perform the first HXR imaging spectroscopy on a range of features in the quiet Sun. By studying the HXR emission of these features, we can detect or constrain the presence of high temperature (> 5 MK) or non-thermal sources, to help understand how they relate to larger, more energetic solar phenomena, and determine their contribution to heating the solar atmosphere. We report on several features observed in the 28 September 2018 NuSTAR full-disk quiet Sun mosaics, the first of the NuSTAR quiet Sun observing campaigns, which mostly include steady features of X-ray bright points and an emerging flux region, which later evolved into an active region, as well as a short-lived jet. We find that the features’ HXR spectra are well fitted with isothermal models with temperatures ranging between 2.0 – 3.2 MK. Combining the NuSTAR data with softer X-ray emission from Hinode/XRT and EUV from SDO/AIA, we recover the differential emission measures, confirming little significant emission above 4 MK. The NuSTAR HXR spectra allow us to constrain the possible non-thermal emission that would still be consistent with a null HXR detection. We found that for only one of the features (the jet) was there a potential non-thermal upper limit capable of powering the heating observed. However, even here, the non-thermal electron distribution had to be very steep (effectively mono-energetic) with a low energy cut-off between 3 – 4 keV.

We investigated the quasiperiodic pulsations (QPPs) of the X1.2 solar flare (SOL2023-01-06T00:57) based on multi-instrument observations, especially the Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) on board the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S). The quasiperiod of ≈ 27 s was identified in hard X-rays (HXR) and microwaves using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, while no corresponding oscillation was found in soft X-rays. The HXI imaging demonstrates that HXR pulsations arise from the double-footpoint HXR sources. Moreover, the fluctuation of ≈ 27 s period was also present in the nonthermal electron power-law index derived from the X-ray spectra, which is the signature of periodic electron acceleration/precipitation during the impulsive phase. The electron spectral indices not only exhibited the well-known "soft–hard–soft" evolution, but also showed the negative correlation with the HXR pulsations. These results suggest that QPPs directly originate from quasiperiodic injections of accelerated electrons into flare-loop footpoints. We also discuss the possible generation mechanisms for QPPs. The minimum variation time-scale (MVT) and spectral lag of hundreds of X-ray bursts (XRBs) from soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) J1935+2154 were analysed in detail for the first time in our recent work, which are important probes for studying the physical mechanism and radiation region. In this work, we investigate their differential and cumulative distributions carefully and find that they follow power-law models. Besides, the distributions of fluctuations in both parameters follow the Tsallis q -Gaussian distributions and the q values are consistent for different scale intervals. Therefore, these results indicate that both parameters are scale-invariant, which provides new parameters for the study of self-organized criticality systems. The study of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and power density spectra (PDSs) continuum properties can help shed light on the still elusive emission physics of magnetars and as a window into the interiors of neutron stars using asteroseismology. In this work, we employ a PDS method to search for the QPOs in the hundreds of X-ray bursts from SGR J1935+2154 observed by Insight - HXMT, GECAM , and Fermi/ GBM from 2014 July to 2022 January. Although no definitive QPO signal (significance >3 σ) is detected in individual bursts or the averaged periodogram of the bursts grouped by duration, we identify several bursts exhibiting features at ∼40 Hz, attributed to the the proximity intervals between adjacent pulses and consistent with that reported in the X-ray burst associated with FRB 200428. We investigate the PDS continuum properties and find that the distribution of the PDS slope in the simple power-law model peaks at ∼2.5, which is consistent with other magnetars but higher than 5/3 commonly seen in gamma-ray bursts. Besides, the distribution of the break frequency in the broken power-law model peaks at ∼60 Hz. Finally, we report that the power-law index of PDS has an anti-correlation and power-law dependence on the burst duration as well as the minimum variation time-scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar white-light flares (WLFs) are those accompanied by brightenings in the optical continuum or integrated light. The White-light Solar Telescope (WST), as an instrument of the Lyman-alpha Solar Telescope (LST) on the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S), provides continuous solar full-disk images at 360 nm, which can be used to study WLFs. We analyze 205 major flares above M1.0 from October 2022 to May 2023 and identify 49 WLFs at 360 nm from WST observations, i.e. with an occurrence rate of 23.9%. The percentages of WLFs for M1 – M4 (31 out of 180), M5 – M9 (11 out of 18), and above X1 (7 for all) flares are 17.2%, 61.1%, and 100%, respectively, namely the larger the flares, the more likely they are WLFs at 360 nm. We further analyze 39 WLFs among the identified WLFs and investigate their properties such as white-light enhancement, duration, and brightening area. It is found that the relative enhancement of the white-light emission at 360 nm is mostly (>90%) less than 30% and the mean enhancement is 19.4%. The WLFs' duration at 360 nm is mostly (>80%) less than 20 minutes and its mean is 10.3 minutes. The brightening area at 360 nm is mostly (>75%) less than 500 arcsecond2 and the median value is 225. We find that there exist good correlations between the white-light enhancement/duration/area and the peak soft X-ray (SXR) flux of the flare, with correlation coefficients of 0.68, 0.58, and 0.80, respectively. In addition, the white-light emission in most WLFs peaks around the same time as the temporal derivative of SXR flux as well as the hard X-ray emission at 20 – 50 keV, indicative of the Neupert effect. In this study, we explore the dynamical stability of magnetar bursts within the context of the chaos-randomness phase space for the first time, aiming to uncover unique behaviours compared to various astrophysical transients, including fast radio bursts (FRBs). We analyse burst energy time series data from active magnetar sources SGR J1550−5418 and SGR J1935+2154, focusing on burst arrival time and energy differences between consecutive events. We find a distinct separation in the time domain, where magnetar bursts exhibit significantly lower randomness compared to FRBs, solar flares, and earthquakes, with a slightly higher degree of chaos. In the energy domain, magnetar bursts exhibit a broad consistency with other phenomena, primarily due to the wide distribution of chaos-randomness observed across different bursts and sources. Intriguingly, contrary to expectations from the FRB-magnetar connection, the arrival time patterns of magnetar bursts in our analysis do not exhibit significant proximity to repeating FRBs in the chaos-randomness plane. This finding may challenge the hypothesis that FRBs are associated with typical magnetar bursts but indirectly supports the evidence that FRBs may primarily be linked to special magnetar bursts like peculiar X-ray bursts from SGR J1935+2154 observed simultaneously with Galactic FRB 200428. Observations and theory suggest that core-collapse supernovae can span a range of explosion energies, and when sub-energetic the shockwave initiating the explosion can decelerate to speeds comparable to the escape speed of the progenitor. In these cases, gravity will complicate the explosion hydrodynamics and conceivably cause the shock to stall at large radii within the progenitor star. To understand these unique properties of weak explosions, we develop a perturbative approach for modeling the propagation of an initially strong shock into a time-steady, infalling medium in the gravitational field of a compact object. This method writes the shock position and the post-shock velocity, density, and pressure as series solutions in the (time-dependent) ratio of the freefall speed to the shock speed, and predicts that the shock stalls within the progenitor if the explosion energy is below a critical value. We show that our model agrees very well with hydrodynamic simulations, and accurately predicts (for example) the time-dependent shock position and velocity and the radius at which the shock stalls. Our results have implications for black hole formation and the newly detected class of fast X-ray transients (FXTs). In particular, we propose that a "phantom shock breakout"—where the outer edge of the star falls through a stalled shock—can yield a burst of X-rays without a subsequent optical/UV signature, similar to FXTs. Pulse profile modelling is a relativistic ray-tracing technique that can be used to infer masses, radii, and geometric parameters of neutron stars. In a previous study, we looked at the performance of this technique when applied to thermonuclear burst oscillations from accreting neutron stars. That study showed that ignoring the variability associated with burst oscillation sources resulted in significant biases in the inferred mass and radius, particularly for the high count rates that are nominally required to obtain meaningful constraints. In this follow-on study, we show that the bias can be mitigated by slicing the bursts into shorter segments where variability can be neglected, and jointly fitting the segments. Using this approach, the systematic uncertainties on the mass and radius are brought within the range of the statistical uncertainty. With about 106 source counts, this yields uncertainties of approximately 10 per cent for both the mass and radius. However, this modelling strategy requires substantial computational resources. We also confirm that the posterior distributions of the mass and radius obtained from multiple bursts of the same source can be merged to produce outcomes comparable to that of a single burst with an equivalent total number of counts. We report on the mountain top observation of three terrestrial gamma‐ray flashes (TGFs) that occurred during the summer storm season of 2021. To our knowledge, these are the first TGFs observed in a mountaintop environment and the first published European TGFs observed from the ground. A gamma‐ray sensitive detector was located at the base of the Säntis Tower in Switzerland and observed three unique TGF events with coincident radio sferic data characteristic of TGFs seen from space. We will show an example of a "slow pulse" radio signature (Cummer et al., 2011, https://doi.org/10.1029/2011GL048099; Lu et al., 2011, https://doi.org/10.1029/2010JA016141; Pu et al., 2019, https://doi.org/10.1029/2019GL082743; Pu et al., 2020, https://doi.org/10.1029/2020GL089427), a −EIP (Lyu et al., 2016, https://doi.org/10.1002/2016GL070154; Lyu et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021GL093627; Wada et al., 2020, https://doi.org/10.1029/2019JD031730), and a double peak TGF associated with an extraordinarily powerful and complicated positive‐polarity sferic, where each TGF peak is possibly preceded by a short burst of stepped leader emission. Recently discovered regular X-ray bursts known as quasi-periodic eruptions have a proposed model that suggests a tidal stripping white dwarf inspiralling into the galaxy's central black hole on an eccentric orbit. According to this model, the interaction of the stripping white dwarf with the central black hole would also emit gravitational wave signals, their detection can help explore the formation mechanism of quasi-periodic eruptions and facilitate multimessenger observations. In this paper, we investigated the horizon distance of TianQin on this type of gravitation wave signal and found it can be set to 200 Mpc. We also find that those stripping white dwarf model sources with central black hole mass within |$10^4 \!-\! 10^{5.5}\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| are more likely to be detected by TianQin. We assessed the parameter estimation precision of TianQin on those stripping white dwarf model sources. Our result shows that, even in the worst case, TianQin can determine the central black hole mass, the white dwarf mass, the central black hole spin, and the orbital initial eccentricity with a precision of 10−2. In the optimistic case, TianQin can determine the central black hole mass and the white dwarf mass with a precision of 10−7, determine the central black hole spin with a precision of 10−5, and determine the orbital initial eccentricity with a precision of 10−8. Type I X-ray bursts are rapid-brightening transient phenomena on the surfaces of accreting neutron stars (NSs). Some X-ray bursts, called clocked bursters, exhibit regular behavior with similar light-curve profiles in their burst sequences. The periodic nature of clocked bursters has the advantage of constraining X-ray binary parameters and physics inside the NS. In the present study, we compute numerical models, based on different equations of state and NS masses, which are compared with the observations of a recently identified clocked burster, 1RXS J180408.9−342058. We find that the relation between the accretion rate and the recurrence time is highly sensitive to the NS mass and radius. We determine, in particular, that 1RXS J180408.9−342058 appears to possess a mass less than 1.7 M ⊙ and favors a stiffer nuclear equation of state (with an NS radius ≳12.7 km). Consequently, the observations of this new clocked burster may provide additional constraints for probing the structure of NSs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present here timing and spectral analyses of SGR J1830−0645 based on an AstroSat observation carried out on 2020 October 16, about a week after the onset of its first detected X-ray outburst. Using data taken with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC), we have detected 0.9–10 keV coherent pulsations at a period of ∼10.4 s. The pulse profiles were single-peaked, asymmetric, and consisted of minor peaks attributable to hotspots on the neutron star surface. The pulsed fraction evolved significantly with energy, increasing to energies around 5 keV with a steep drop thereafter. The 0.9–25 keV SXT–LAXPC energy spectrum is best described with two thermal components having temperatures ∼0.46 and ∼1.1 keV (emission radii of ∼2.4 and ∼0.65 km, respectively, assuming a distance of 4 kpc) along with a power-law component having a photon index of ∼0.39. We report the detection of 67 X-ray bursts having an average duration of ∼33 ms. The brightest burst lasted for about 90 ms and had a 3–25 keV fluence of ∼5 × 10−9 erg cm−2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetospheres of neutron stars can be perturbed by star quakes, interaction in a binary system, or sudden collapse of the star. The perturbations are typically in the kilohertz band and excite magnetohydrodynamic waves. We show that compressive magnetospheric waves steepen into monster shocks, possibly the strongest shocks in the Universe. The shocks are radiative, i.e., the plasma energy is radiated before it crosses the shock. As the kilohertz wave with the radiative shock expands through the magnetosphere, it produces a bright X-ray burst. Then, it launches an approximately adiabatic blast wave, which will expand far from the neutron star. These results suggest a new mechanism for X-ray bursts from magnetars and support the connection of magnetar X-ray activity with fast radio bursts. Similar shocks may occur in magnetized neutron-star binaries before they merge, generating an X-ray precursor of the merger. Powerful radiative shocks are also predicted in the magnetosphere of a neutron star when it collapses into a black hole, producing a bright X-ray transient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HERMES Pathfinder is an in-orbit demonstration consisting of a constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting simple but innovative detectors for the monitoring of cosmic high-energy transients. The main objective of HERMES Pathfinder is to prove that accurate position of high-energy cosmic transients can be obtained using miniaturized hardware. The transient position is obtained by studying the delay time of arrival of the signal to different detectors hosted by nano-satellites on low-Earth orbits. In this context, we need to develop novel tools to fully exploit the future scientific data output of HERMES Pathfinder. In this paper, we introduce a new framework to assess the background count rate of a spaceborne, high energy detector; a key step towards the identification of faint astrophysical transients. We employ a neural network to estimate the background lightcurves on different timescales. Subsequently, we employ a fast change-point and anomaly detection technique called Poisson-FOCuS to identify observation segments where statistically significant excesses in the observed count rate relative to the background estimate exist. We test the new software on archival data from the NASA Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM), which has a collecting area and background level of the same order of magnitude to those of HERMES Pathfinder. The neural network performances are discussed and analyzed over period of both high and low solar activity. We were able to confirm events in the Fermi-GBM catalog, both solar flares and gamma-ray bursts, and found events, not present in Fermi-GBM database, that could be attributed to solar flares, terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, gamma-ray bursts and galactic X-ray flashes. Large solar flares occasionally trigger significant space-weather disturbances that affect the technological infrastructures of modern civilization, and therefore require further investigation. Although these solar flares have been monitored by satellite observations since the 1970s, large solar flares occur only infrequently and restrict systematic statistical research owing to data limitations. However, Toyokawa Observatory has operated solar radio observations at low frequencies (at 3.75 and 9.4 GHz) since 1951 and captured the early great flares as solar radio bursts. To estimate the magnitudes of flares that occurred before the start of solar X-ray (SXR) observations with the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) satellites, we show the relationship between microwave fluxes at 3.75 and 9.4 GHz and X-ray fluxes of flares that occurred after 1988. In total, we explored 341 solar flares observed with the Nobeyama Radio Polarimeters and Toyokawa Observatory from 1988–2014 and compared them with the SXR observations recorded by the GOES satellites. The correlation coefficient was approximately 0.7. Therefore, the GOES X-ray class can be estimated from the peak flux at 3.75 and 9.4 GHz with a large variance and an error of factor of 3 (1 σ). Thus, for the first time, we quantitatively estimated the light curves of two early solar flares observed in 1956 February by the Toyokawa solar radio observations using the relationship between SXR thermal radiation and microwave nonthermal radiation (Neupert, 1968, ApJ, 153, 59). X-ray Timing Explorer J1810−189 is a low-mass X-ray binary transient system hosting a neutron star, which underwent a three-month-long outburst in 2020. In order to study its spectral evolution during this outburst, we analysed all the available observations performed by Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer , in the 1–10 keV energy band. First, we fitted the spectra with a thermal Comptonization model. Our analysis revealed the lack of a significant direct emission from a blackbody-like component, therefore we calculated the optical depth of the Comptonizing region, deriving an upper limit of 4.5, which suggests the presence of a moderately thick corona. We also attempted to fit the spectrum with an alternative model, i.e. a cold Comptonized emission from a disc and a direct thermal component from the neutron star, finding a similarly good fit. The source did not enter a full high luminosity/soft state throughout the outburst, with a photon index ranging from ∼1.7 to ∼2.2, and an average unabsorbed flux in the 1–10 keV band of ∼3.6 × 10−10 erg cm−2 s−1. We searched for the presence of Fe K-shell emission lines in the range ∼6.4–7 keV, significantly detecting a broad component only in a couple of observations. Finally, we conducted a time-resolved spectral analysis of the detected type-I X-ray burst, observed during the outburst, finding no evidence of a photospheric radius expansion. External irradiation of a neutron star (NS) accretion disc induces Poynting–Robertson (PR) drag, removing angular momentum and increasing the mass accretion rate. Recent simulations show PR drag significantly enhancing the mass accretion rate during Type I X-ray bursts, which could explain X-ray spectral features such as an increase in the persistent emission and a soft excess. However, prograde spin of the NS is expected to weaken PR drag, challenging its importance during bursts. Here, we study the effect of spin on PR drag during X-ray bursts. We run four simulations, with two assuming a non-spinning NS and two using a spin parameter of a * = 0.2, corresponding to a rotation frequency of 500 Hz. For each scenario, we simulate the disc evolution subject to an X-ray burst and compare it to the evolution found with no burst. PR drag drains the inner disc region during a burst, moving the inner disc radius outwards by ≈1.6 km in the a * = 0 and by ≈2.2 km in the a * = 0.2 simulation. The burst enhances the mass accretion rate across the innermost stable circular orbit ≈7.9 times when the NS is not spinning and ≈11.2 times when it is spinning. The explanation for this seemingly contradictory result is that the disc is closer to the NS when a * = 0.2, and the resulting stronger irradiating flux offsets the weakening effect of spin on the PR drag. Hence, PR drag remains a viable explanation for the increased persistent emission and soft excess observed during X-ray bursts in spinning NS systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the first simultaneous high-time resolution X-ray and infrared (IR) observations of a neutron star low mass X-ray binary in its hard state. We performed |$\approx 2\,$|  h of simultaneous observations of 4U 1728−34 using HAWK-I@VLT, XMM–Newton , and NuSTAR. The source displayed significant X-ray and IR variability down to sub-second time-scales. By measuring the cross-correlation function between the IR and X-ray lightcurves, we discovered a significant correlation with an IR lead of |$\approx 30 \!-\! 40\,$|  ms with respect to the X-rays. We analysed the X-ray energy dependence of the lag, finding a marginal increase towards higher energies. Given the sign of the lag, we interpret this as possible evidence of Comptonization from external seed photons. We discuss the origin of the IR seed photons in terms of cyclo-synchrotron radiation from an extended hot flow. Finally, we also observed the IR counterpart of a type-I X-ray burst, with a delay of |$\approx 7.2\,$|  s. Although some additional effects may be at play, by assuming that this lag is due to light travel time between the central object and the companion star, we find that 4U 1728−34 must have an orbital period longer than |$3\,$|  h and an inclination higher than 8○. We studied the frequency and critical mass accretion rate of millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) using a one-zone X-ray burst model. The surface gravity is specified by two kinds of equation of states: neutron star (NS) and strange star (SS). The base flux, Q b, is set in the range of 0–2 MeV nucleon−1. It is found that the frequency of mHz QPO is positively correlated to the surface gravity but negatively to the base heating. The helium mass fraction has a significant influence on the oscillation frequency and luminosity. The observed 7–9 mHz QPOs can be either explained by a heavy NS/light SS with a small base flux or a heavy SS with a large base flux. As base flux increases, the critical mass accretion rate for marginally stable burning is found to be lower. Meanwhile, the impact of metallicity on the properties of mHz QPOs was investigated using one-zone model. It shows that both the frequency and critical mass accretion rate decrease as metallicity increases. An accreted NS/SS with a higher base flux and metallicity, combined with a lower surface gravity and helium mass fraction, could be responsible for the observed critical mass accretion rate (⁠|$\dot{m}\simeq 0.3\dot{m}_{\rm Edd}$|⁠). The accreted fuel would be in stable burning if base flux is over than ∼2 MeV nucleon−1. This finding suggests that the accreting NSs/SSs in low-mass X-ray binaries showing no type I X-ray bursts possibly have a strong base heating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the discovery, with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), that SRGA J144459.2−604207 is a 447.9 Hz accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP), which underwent a 4 week long outburst starting on 2024 February 15. The AMXP resides in a 5.22 hr binary, orbiting a low-mass companion donor with M _d > 0.1 M _⊙ . We report on the temporal and spectral properties from NICER observations during the early days of the outburst, from 2024 February 21 through 2024 February 23, during which NICER also detected a type I X-ray burst that exhibited a plateau lasting ∼6 s. The spectra of the persistent emission were well described by an absorbed thermal blackbody and power-law model, with blackbody temperature kT ≈ 0.9 keV and power-law photon index Γ ≈ 1.9. Time-resolved burst spectroscopy confirmed the thermonuclear nature of the burst, where an additional blackbody component reached a maximum temperature of nearly kT ≈ 3 keV at the peak of the burst. We discuss the nature of the companion as well as the type I X-ray burst.

We report accretion-powered pulsations for the first time during thermonuclear bursts in hard X-rays, which were observed with Insight-HXMT in 2022 during the outburst of the accreting X-ray millisecond pulsar MAXI J1816-195. By stacking 73 bursts, we detected pulse profiles in 8–30 and 30–100 keV during bursts, which are identical to those obtained from the persistent (nonburst) emission. On average, no significant phase lag was observed between burst and persistent pulse profiles. In addition, we suggest that the interaction with burst photons can be used as a direct diagnostic to distinguish contributions from the hot plasma near polar caps and the corona around the accretion disk, which are highly degenerate in their spectral shapes.

Swift J1749.4-2807 is the only known eclipsing accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar. In this paper, we report on seven thermonuclear (Type-I) X-ray bursts observed by NICER during its 2021 outburst. The first six bursts show slow rises and long decays, indicative of mixed H/He fuel, whereas the last burst shows fast rise and decay, suggesting He-rich fuel. Time-resolved spectroscopy of the bursts revealed typical phenomenology (i.e. an increase in blackbody temperature during the burst rise, and steady decrease in the decay), however, they required a variable N H. We found that the values of N H during the bursts were roughly double those found in the fits of the persistent emission prior to each burst. We interpret this change in absorption as evidence of burst–disc interaction, which we observe due to the high inclination of the system. We searched for burst oscillations during each burst and detected a signal in the first burst at the known spin frequency of the neutron star (517.92 Hz). This is the first time burst oscillations have been detected from Swift J1749.4-2807. We further find that each X-ray burst occurs on top of an elevated persistent count rate. We performed time-resolved spectroscopy on the combined data of the bursts with sufficient statistics (i.e. the clearest examples of this phenomenon) and found that the blackbody parameters evolve to hotter temperatures closer to the onset of the bursts. We systematically compare the temporal and spectral properties of 53 supernova (SN)-associated and 15 kilonova (KN)-associated gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We find that the spectral parameters of both types of GRBs are identically and lognormally distributed, consistent with those normal GRBs. The bolometric luminosities of SN/GRBs and KN/GRBs have a triple form, with the corresponding break luminosities of SN/GRBs are roughly two orders of magnitude larger than those of KN/GRBs. We build the power-law relations between the spectral lag and the luminosity of prompt γ-rays with indices of −1.43 ± 0.33 for SN/GRBs and −2.17 ± 0.57 for KN/GRBs in the laboratory frame, which are respectively coincident with the rest-frame values. We verify that both SN/GRBs and KN/GRBs comply with their own Amati relations that match those of long and short GRBs, respectively. Analysing X-ray afterglows with good plateau segments, we build the power-law relations between the X-ray luminosity and the plateau time with an index of −1.12 ± 0.17 for KN/GRBs and −1.08 ± 0.22 for SN/GRBs, which can be well explained by the relativistic shock driven by an energy injection. The plots of luminosity-lag, Amati relation, and luminosity-time show heavy overlap between the two types of GRBs, implying that they might share the same radiation mechanism despite originating from different progenitors or central engines. Context. Accurate 42Ti(p,γ)43V reaction rates are crucial for understanding the nucleosynthesis path of the rapid capture process (rp process) that occurs in X-ray bursts. Aims. We aim to improve the thermonuclear rates of 42Ti(p,γ)43V based on more complete resonance information and a more accurate direct component, together with the recently released nuclear masses data. We also explore the impact of the newly obtained rates on the rp process. Methods. We reevaluated the reaction rate of 42Ti(p,γ)43V by the sum of the isolated resonance contribution instead of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. We used a Monte Carlo method to derive the associated uncertainties of new rates. The nucleosynthesis simulations were performed via the NuGrid post-processing code ppn. Results. The new rates differ from previous estimations due to the use of a series of updated resonance parameters and a direct S factor. Compared with the previous results from the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model, which assumes compound nucleus 43V with a sufficiently high-level density in the energy region of astrophysical interest, large differences exist over the entire temperature region of rp-process interest, up to two orders of magnitude. We consistently calculated the photodisintegration rate using our new nuclear masses via the detailed balance principle, and found the discrepancies among the different reverse rates are much larger than those for the forward rate, up to ten orders of magnitude at the temperature of 108 K. Using a trajectory with a peak temperature of 1.95×109 K, we performed the rp-process nucleosynthesis simulations to investigate the impact of the new rates. Our calculations show that the adoption of the new forward and reverse rates result in abundance variations for Sc and Ca of 128% and 49%, respectively, compared to the variations for the statistical model rates. On the other hand, the overall abundance pattern is not significantly affected. The results of using new rates also confirm that the rp-process path does not bypass the isotope 43V. Conclusions. Our study found that the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model is inappropriate to the reaction rate evaluation for 42Ti(p,γ)43V. A short X-ray burst was observed from the radio-loud magnetar 1E 1547.0–5408 in 2022 April. Unusually however, the source stopped showing radio pulsations |$\gtrsim 3\,$|  weeks prior to the burst. After recovery, radio timing revealed that the object had also undergone a modest glitch. A model for the overall event is constructed where an initially mild perturbation adjusts the magnetic geometry near the polar caps, leading to shallow fractures. Crustal ejecta or particles leaking from a pair-plasma fireball pollute the magnetospheric gaps, shutting off the pulsar mechanism, but the energy release is not yet large enough to noticeably enhance the X-ray flux. This perturbation gradually ramps, eventuating in a large-scale energy redistribution which fuels the burst. The star's mass quadrupole moment changes in tandem, issuing a glitch. Some quantitative estimates for the magnetic reconfiguration under this interpretation are provided, based on a quasi-static model where the fluid evolves through a sequence of hydromagnetic equilibria. In this paper, we describe a technique using a crystal spectrometer, a silicon-diode detector, and a filtered photoconductive detector to monitor photon energies in the L-shell (0.9–1 keV) and K-shell regimes for nickel and copper hybrid X-pinch x-ray sources. The detectors, system cabling, and an 8 GHz digital oscilloscope in combination enable time resolution better than 200 ps for photoconductive detectors and 700 ps for silicon-diode detectors of the K- and L-shell radiation signals, respectively. We substantially improve the relative timing of signals obtained using the oscilloscope by using an x-ray streak camera with a crystal spectrometer to monitor the L-shell line spectra and, separately, the K-shell line spectra relative to the continuum burst to better than 17 ps time resolution. This combination of instruments enabled and validated a new method by which plasma conditions in nickel and copper X-pinches can be assessed immediately before and after the ∼30 ps continuum x-ray burst produced by 370 kA hybrid X-pinches. In general, the method described here can be applied to observe otherwise highly filter-absorbed radiation in the presence of a broad spectrum of higher energy radiation by combining x-ray crystals and detectors. We study the effects of the time-variable properties of thermonuclear X-ray bursts on modelling their millisecond-period burst oscillations. We apply the pulse profile modelling technique that is being used in the analysis of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer to infer masses, radii, and geometric parameters of neutron stars. By simulating and analysing a large set of models, we show that overlooking burst time-scale variability in temperatures and sizes of the hot emitting regions can result in substantial bias in the inferred mass and radius. To adequately infer neutron star properties, it is essential to develop a model for the time-variable properties or invest a substantial amount of computational time in segmenting the data into non-varying pieces. The dynamics of positive and negative streamers is numerically simulated in atmospheric pressure air in the range of parameters corresponding to the streamer deceleration and termination in the middle of the discharge gap. A detailed comparison with experiments in air at constant and variable density demonstrates good agreement between the 2D simulation results and the observations. It is shown that positive and negative streamers behave in radically different ways when decelerating and stopping. When the head potential drops, the negative streamer transits to the mode in which the propagation is due to the forward electron drift. In this case, the radius of the ionization wave front increases, whereas the electric field at the streamer head decreases further and the streamer stops. Its head diameter continues to increase due to the slow drift of free electrons in the residual under-breakdown field. On the contrary, the only advancement mechanism for a positive streamer with a decreasing head potential is a decrease in the effective radius of the ionization wave, leading to a local increase in the electric field. This mechanism makes it possible to compensate for the reduction in the efficiency of gas photoionization at small head diameters. A qualitative 1D model is suggested to describe streamer deceleration and stopping for different discharge polarities. Estimates show that, during positive streamer stopping, the local electric field at the streamer head can exceed the threshold corresponding to the transition of electrons to the runaway mode when the head potential (relative to the surrounding space) decreases to ∼1.2 kV in atmospheric pressure air. In this case, pulsed generation of a beam of runaway electrons directed into the channel of a stopping positive streamer can occur. The energy of the formed pulsed electron beam depends on the intensity of photoionization in front of the streamer head. This energy can vary from 700 V (when increasing the photoionization rate by a factor of 10 with respect to the value in atmospheric pressure air) to 2.6 kV (when decreasing the photoionization rate by a factor of 1000). It is possible that this behavior of decelerating positive streamers can explain the observed bursts of x-ray radiation during the streamer propagation in long air gaps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
