Zinc tungstate is a semiconductor known for its favorable photocatalytic, photoluminescence, and scintillation properties, coupled with its relatively low cost, reduced toxicity, and high stability in biological and catalytic environments. In particular, zinc tungstate evinces scintillation properties, namely the ability to emit visible light upon absorption of energetic radiation such as x rays, which has led to applications not only as radiation detectors but also for biomedical applications involving the delivery of optical light to deep tissue, such as photodynamic therapy and optogenetics. Here, we report on the synthesis of zinc tungstate nanorods generated via an optimized but facile method, which allows for synthetic control over the aspect ratio of the as-synthesized anisotropic motifs via rational variation of the solution pH. We investigate the effect of aspect ratio on their resulting photoluminescent and radioluminescent properties. We further demonstrate the potential of these zinc tungstate nanorods for biomedical applications, such as photodynamic therapy for cancer treatment, by analyzing their toxicological profile within cell lines and neurons. The ability to visualize x-ray and neutron emission from fusion plasmas in 3D is critical to understand the origin of the complex shapes of the plasmas in experiments. Unfortunately, this remains challenging in experiments that study a fusion concept known as Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) due to a small number of available diagnostic views. Here, we present a basis function-expansion approach to reconstruct MagLIF stagnation plasmas from a sparse set of x-ray emission images. A set of natural basis functions is "learned" from training volumes containing quasi-helical structures whose projections are qualitatively similar to those observed in experimental images. Tests on several known volumes demonstrate that the learned basis outperforms both a cylindrical harmonic basis and a simple voxel basis with additional regularization, according to several metrics. Two-view reconstructions with the learned basis can estimate emission volumes to within 11% and those with three views recover morphology to a high degree of accuracy. The technique is applied to experimental data, producing the first 3D reconstruction of a MagLIF stagnation column from multiple views, providing additional indications of liner instabilities imprinting onto the emitting plasma. The structure and mechanism of the water-oxidation chemistry that occurs in photosystem II have been subjects of great interest. The advent of X-ray free electron lasers allowed the determination of structures of the stable intermediate states and of steps in the transitions between these intermediate states, bringing a new perspective to this field. The room-temperature structures collected as the photosynthetic water oxidation reaction proceeds in real time have provided important novel insights into the structural changes and the mechanism of the water oxidation reaction. The time-resolved measurements have also given us a view of how this reaction-which involves multielectron, multiproton processes-is facilitated by the interaction of the ligands and the protein residues in the oxygen-evolving complex. These structures have also provided a picture of the dynamics occurring in the channels within photosystem II that are involved in the transport of the substrate water to the catalytic center and protons to the bulk.

The α-hydroxyethyl radical (CH3·CHOH, 2A) is a key intermediate in ethanol biochemistry, combustion, atmospheric chemistry, radiation chemistry, and astrochemistry. Experimental data on the vibrational spectrum of this radical are crucially important for reliable detection and understanding of the chemical dynamics of this species. This study represents the first detailed experimental report on the infrared absorption bands of the α-hydroxyethyl radical complemented by ab initio computations. The radical was generated in solid para-H2 and Xe matrices via the reactions of hydrogen atoms with matrix-isolated ethanol molecules and radiolysis of isolated ethanol molecules with x rays. The absorption bands with maxima at 3654.6, 3052.1, 1425.7, 1247.9, 1195.6 (1177.4), and 1048.4 cm−1, observed in para-H2 matrices appearing upon the H· atom reaction, were attributed to the OHstr, α-CHstr, CCstr, COstr + CCObend, COstr, and CCstr + CCObend vibrational modes of the CH3·CHOH radical, respectively. The absorption bands with the positions slightly red-shifted from those observed in para-H2 were detected in both the irradiated and post-irradiation annealed Xe matrices containing C2H5OH. The results of the experiments with the isotopically substituted ethanol molecules (CH3CD2OH and CD3CD2OH) and the quantum-chemical computations at the UCCSD(T)/L2a_3 level support the assignment. The photolysis with ultraviolet light (240–300 nm) results in the decay of the α-hydroxyethyl radical, yielding acetaldehyde and its isomer, vinyl alcohol. In this study, we observed natural methane (CH4) hydrate sediments, which are a type of unconventional natural gas resources, using x-ray computed tomography (CT). Because CH4 hydrates are formed by hydrogen bonding of water molecules with CH4, material decomposition becomes challenging when CH4 hydrates coexist with liquid or solid water in natural sediments. Tri-contrast (absorption, refraction, and scattering) imaging was performed via diffraction enhanced x-ray CT optics using monochromatic synchrotron x rays. The quantitative characterization of the contrast changes successfully enabled the decomposition of CH4 hydrates coexisting with frozen seawater (ice) in natural sediments obtained from the Okhotsk Sea. This study reveals complementary structural information about the microtexture and spatial relation among CH4 hydrates, ice, and pores by utilizing the distinct physical properties of x rays when passing through the materials. Macromolecular crystallography generally requires the recovery of missing phase information from diffraction data to reconstruct an electron-density map of the crystallized molecule. Most recent structures have been solved using molecular replacement as a phasing method, requiring an a priori structure that is closely related to the target protein to serve as a search model; when no such search model exists, molecular replacement is not possible. New advances in computational machine-learning methods, however, have resulted in major advances in protein structure predictions from sequence information. Methods that generate predicted structural models of sufficient accuracy provide a powerful approach to molecular replacement. Taking advantage of these advances, AlphaFold predictions were applied to enable structure determination of a bacterial protein of unknown function (UniProtKB Q63NT7, NCBI locus BPSS0212) based on diffraction data that had evaded phasing attempts using MIR and anomalous scattering methods. Using both X-ray and micro-electron (microED) diffraction data, it was possible to solve the structure of the main fragment of the protein using a predicted model of that domain as a starting point. The use of predicted structural models importantly expands the promise of electron diffraction, where structure determination relies critically on molecular replacement.

Oblique shock wave–interface interactions of gases and liquids have been extensively studied in shock tubes using optical methods to measure equation-of-state (EOS) parameters. However, this is difficult with solids due to their opaqueness to visible light. X ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) has the penetrative strength to probe solids while still being sensitive to mass density and enhancing the visibility of material boundaries. We investigate the accuracy and repeatability of measuring the mean value of the average mass density (areal density divided by thickness) over region S (B S) and flow deflection angle (θ) from XPCI images of a sample. To that end, a Hough transform-based method for measuring θ is developed. To measure B S , the XPCI image intensity probability density function (PDF) is modeled accounting for the spatial distribution of x ray energy, scintillator response, and pulse-to-pulse variation in the x ray intensity. In addition, a Monte Carlo-based algorithm for computing the B S PDF is developed. Both methods are validated on an impact-generated oblique shock wave interacting at a solid polymer-to-polymer interface. This is accomplished through a comparison to hydrodynamic simulations using well-established EOS. Under the modeling framework for the XPCI image intensity, B S is computed with an accuracy of < 0.1 % and precision of 3%–5%, while θ has an uncertainty of 0.2 ° , respectively. Millimeter-thick methylammonium lead tribromide (MAPbBr3) single crystal x-ray detectors have recently raised attention due to their high x-ray attenuation efficiency and good charge transport properties. However, an intriguing feature of the photocurrent response of MAPbBr3 detectors has been largely overlooked in the literature. After biasing, transient sensitivity is measured under x rays at short-circuit (bias = 0 V), thus revealing a large remnant electric field that builds up under bias. Here, we exploit the x-ray sensitivity of MAPbBr3 detectors at zero-bias in order to probe the internal built-in field, as well as to investigate the charge transport properties of the perovskite material. Our model derived from the Hecht equation is able to fully rationalize the response of the detectors both at short-circuit and under moderate applied bias. Moreover, we provide a method for the estimation of the internal electric field, and for the sum of the electrons and holes mobility–lifetime products μ e τ e + μ h τ h. We investigate the temporal correlation between very-high-frequency (VHF, at frequencies of the order of 10–100 MHz), ultrahigh-frequency (UHF, at frequencies within 1–6 GHz), and x-ray (with photon energies more than 10 keV) emissions, which accompany the development of a high-voltage discharge initiated in a long gap at voltages up to 1 MV. The x-ray and UHF emissions are found to emerge starting approximately from the prepulse current onset observed before the discharge gap breakdown and both gradually decay coming to this instant. The UHF emission spectrum is represented with frequencies up to 6 GHz, with the highest spectral power being achieved within 1–2 GHz. The radio emission power drops sharply at frequencies below 1 GHz and increases closer to 150 MHz with the highest spectral power of VHF radiation being reached within 60–90 MHz. The VHF emission can appear before the discharge current and UHF emission onsets in the form of 100-ns-long prepulses, and its intensity significantly increases as the UHF emission starts. The analysis of the temporal correlation between x rays, VHF, and UHF radiations, discharge current, and voltage waveforms indicates that the generation mechanisms of the discharge electromagnetic radiations are difficult to be interpreted in terms of the developing or colliding streamer concepts. Three sets of heteroepitaxial diamond crystals grown under nominally identical process conditions on Ir/YSZ/Si(001) substrates have been studied with respect to structural defects, chemical purity, and x-ray induced photoconductivity (PC). The dislocation density that varied systematically between 10 7 and 10 9 cm − 2 had a minor influence on dark conductivity and photoconductive gain G. In contrast, the substitutional nitrogen (N N ) and substitutional boron (N B ) defects, which are both present at very low concentrations (≤ 1 ppb), turned out to be the crucial factors controlling the electrical behavior. Small differences between both resulted in variations of the photocurrents by up to 5 orders of magnitude. The maximum in G of 0.75 × 10 4 was measured in the sample with highest dark conductivity. It could be explained conclusively within our model calculations on gain formation by N N ≤ N B . For low gain samples, we found N N > --> N B . However, the measured G values were far from theoretical predictions. This indicates a dominating role of additional traps. After x-ray switch-off, persistent photoconductivity (PPC) was observed in high gain samples. It was attributed to an energetic barrier hampering the recharging of nitrogen atoms by hole capture. Vitrification is a promising approach for ice-free cryopreservation of biological material, but progress is hindered by the limited set of experimental tools for studying processes in the interior of the vitrified matter. Isochoric cryopreservation chambers are often metallic, and their opacity prevents direct visual observation. In this study, we introduce photon counting X-ray computed tomography (CT) to compare the effects of rigid isochoric and unconfined isobaric conditions on vitrification and ice formation during cooling of two aqueous solutions: 50 wt% DMSO and a coral vitrification solution, CVS1. Previous studies have only compared vitrification in isochoric systems with isobaric systems that have an exposed air-liquid interface. We use a movable piston to replicate the surface and thermal boundary conditions of the isochoric system yet maintain isobaric conditions. When controlling for the boundary conditions we find that similar ice and vapor volume fractions form during cooling in isochoric and isobaric conditions. Interestingly, we observe distinct ice and vapor cavity morphology in the isochoric systems, possibly due to vapor outgassing or cavitation as rapid cooling causes the pressure to drop in the confined systems. These observations highlight the array of thermal-fluid processes that occur during vitrification in confined aqueous systems and motivate the further application of imaging techniques such as photon counting X-ray CT in fundamental studies of vitrification.

SignificanceX-ray-induced acoustic computed tomography (XACT) offers a promising approach to biomedical imaging, leveraging X-ray absorption contrast. It overcomes the shortages of traditional X-ray, allowing for more advanced medical imaging.AimThe review focuses on the significance and draws onto the potential applications of XACT to demonstrate it as an innovative imaging technique.ApproachThis review navigates the expanding landscape of XACT imaging within the biomedical sphere. Integral topics addressed encompass the refinement of imaging systems and the advancement in image reconstruction algorithms. The review particularly emphasizes XACT's significant biomedical applications.ResultsKey uses, such as breast imaging, bone density maps for osteoporosis, and X-ray molecular imaging, are highlighted to demonstrate the capability of XACT. A unique niche for XACT imaging is its application in in vivo dosimetry during radiotherapy, which has been validated on patients.ConclusionsBecause of its unique property, XACT has great potential in biomedicine and non-destructive testing. We conclude by casting light on potential future avenues in this promising domain.

The fragmentation of fulminic acid, HCNO, after excitation and ionization of core electrons was investigated using Auger-electron–photoion coincidence spectroscopy. A considerable degree of site-selectivity is observed. Ionization of the carbon and oxygen 1s electron leads to around 70% CH+ + NO+, while ionization at the central N-atom produces only 37% CH+ + NO+, but preferentially forms O+ + HCN+ and O+ + CN+. The mass-selected Auger-electron spectra show that these fragments are associated with higher binding energy final states. Furthermore, ionization of the C 1s electron leads to a higher propensity for C–H bond fission compared to O 1s ionization. Following resonant Auger–Meitner decay after 1s → 3π excitation, 12 different ionic products are formed. At the C 1s edge, the parent ion HCNO+ is significantly more stable compared to the other two edges, which we also attribute to the higher contribution of final states with low binding energies in the C 1s resonant Auger electron spectra. We present a time-dependent theory for non-resonant x-ray emission spectrum (XES) and normal Auger spectrum (NAS) calculation, based on a fully quantum description of nuclear dynamics using the vibrational wave packet concept. We compare two formulations of the time-dependent theory, either employing a two-time propagation scheme or using spectral integration over the electron energy continuum. We find that the latter formulation is more efficient for numerical simulations, providing a reasonable accuracy when the integration step is shorter than the lifetime broadening of the core-ionized state. We demonstrate our approach using the example of non-resonant x-ray emission from a water molecule, considering the lowest core-ionized K−1 and first core-ionized shake-up K−1V−1V1 intermediate states. These channels exemplify the developed theory on bound–bound, bound–continuum, continuum–bound, and continuum–continuum transitions. Our results suggest that the time-dependent approach is efficient for simulating XES involving dissociative states, whereas the time-independent approach, based on Franck–Condon factors, is more efficient for bound–bound transitions expressed as discrete frequency dependence in the energy domain. X-ray radiography offers the ability to noninvasively inspect the internal structure and material composition of objects. Dual-energy radiography allows material discrimination but is limited in quantitative material measurements due to the broad nature of the interrogating x-ray spectrum. Spectral radiography detectors provide an observation of not just the number of x rays that are transmitted through a sample but also the spectrum. Here, experimental validations of a method to use spectral x-ray radiography to accurately quantify the uranium mass in a powder are presented. An accurate system response model was developed, which includes a model of the incident x-ray source spectrum and a pixel-wise detector response that describes how the transmitted x rays were observed. Further, a calibration to account for the effect of partial x-ray attenuation was developed. The method is demonstrated to be capable of estimating the uranium mass in a variety of uranium oxide powders to a bias of − 0.01 ± 0.62 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a typical example of constrained sintering, the behavior of a complex ceramic powder system with multi-heterogeneities has been investigated. This powder system comprises inherent imperfections as well as rigid inclusions that act as constraints to densification. The sintering process of the system was monitored by in-situ X-ray nano-tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). This technique enables three-dimensional (3D) imaging of the microstructure with a voxel size of 25 nm. The images obtained reveal the distribution of imperfections in the powder system, such as particle aggregation and pore segregation in and around them. The subsequent in-situ evaluations show the evolution of the microstructure in the presence of inclusions. The study addresses the questions pertaining to the effect of the added constraints, the consequent crack generation and their implication on the final densification of the material. This research presents an innovative approach to disease diagnosis from medical imaging data, specifically focusing on X-ray images of osteoporosis. The proposed method revolves around a Transformer-based Guided Convolutional Neural Network (TGCNN), which integrates the spatial awareness of CNNs with the sophisticated relationship modeling capabilities of Transformers. The model is meticulously trained, achieving a training accuracy of 96% and a testing accuracy of 92%, with corresponding training and testing losses of 0.0034 and 0.0364, respectively. To gauge its effectiveness, TGCNN is rigorously compared with established models, namely ResNet50, AlexNet, and DenseNet169, showcasing superior performance. ResNet50 achieves a training accuracy of 86% and testing accuracy of 82%, with losses of 0.064 and 0.174. AlexNet demonstrates a training accuracy of 83% and testing accuracy of 78%, with losses of 0.04 and 0.64. DenseNet169 attains a training accuracy of 92%, testing accuracy of 88%, and losses of 0.0674 and 0.094. The comprehensive results and comparative analysis affirm the efficacy of the proposed TGCNN model for accurate and efficient disease diagnosis from X-ray images. This work sets the stage for further advancements in medical imaging diagnostics, with potential applications in diverse datasets and real-time diagnostic scenarios. A fraction of the active supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies in our Universe are capable of launching extreme kiloparsec-long relativistic jets. These jets are known multiband (radio to γ-ray) and multimessenger (neutrino) emitters, and some of them have been monitored over decades at all accessible wavelengths. However, several open questions remain unanswered about the processes powering these highly energetic phenomena. These jets intrinsically produce soft-to-hard X-ray emission that extends from E > 0.1 keV up to E > 100 keV, and simultaneous broadband X-ray coverage, combined with excellent timing and imaging capabilities, is required to uncover the physics of jets. Indeed, truly simultaneous soft-to-hard X-ray coverage, in synergy with current and upcoming high-energy facilities (such as IXPE, COSI, CTAO, etc.) and neutrino detectors (e.g., IceCube), would enable us to disentangle the particle population responsible for the high-energy radiation from these jets. A sensitive hard X-ray survey (F20-80 keV < 10-15erg cm-2 s-1) could unveil the bulk of their population in the early Universe. Acceleration and radiative processes responsible for the majority of their X-ray emission would be pinned down by microsecond timing capabilities at both soft and hard X-rays. Furthermore, imaging jet structures for the first time in the hard X-ray regime could unravel the origin of their high-energy emission. The proposed Probe-class mission concept High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) combines all these required capabilities, making it the crucial next-generation X-ray telescope in the multi-messenger, time-domain era. X-rays have been observed in natural downward cloud-to-ground lightning for over 20 years and in rocket-triggered lightning for slightly less. In both cases, this energetic radiation has been detected during the stepped and dart leader phases of downward negative flashes. More recently, X-rays have also been reported during the dart leader phase of upward negative flashes. In this study, we present the observations of four upward positive lightning flashes from the Säntis Tower (2.5 km ASL) in Switzerland. These consist of the simultaneous records of electric current passing through the tower, and electric field strength and X-ray flux 20 m from the tower base. One of the flashes was captured by a high-speed camera operating at 24,000 frames per second, stills from which are also presented. We detected X-rays during the initial phase of upward negative leader propagation, which can be associated with the leader-stepping process from electric field and current waveforms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such measurements are reported in the literature. The obtained time-synchronised data confirm that the X-ray emissions detected are associated with the initial steps of the upward negative leader. The frequency and energy of X-ray pulses appear to decrease as functions of time, with pulses disappearing altogether within the first millisecond of the leader initiation. X-ray emission also appears to be correlated with the maximum current-derivative and the electric field change of leader steps, consistent with cold electron runaway. These observations contribute to improving our understanding of upward lightning, which is a primary source of damage to tall structures such as wind turbines and telecommunications towers, as well as aircraft during takeoff and landing. Standard plain film medical radiographs often form a valuable line of evidence to identify individuals in large‐scale fatality events. While commonly available, chest radiographs present a challenge that their analysis is somewhat more involved and complex than radiographic records of other body regions. For example, chest radiographs concern subtler morphological varieties of smaller anatomical features across a larger number of skeletal elements in contrast to frontal sinus comparisons that concern a large, (often) single, highly variable void within one bone. This does not detract from or discount chest radiographs as useful identification aids, but it does demand additional prerequisite skills in radiographic interpretation to ensure valid conclusions are attained. When subjects deviate from standardized antemortem (AM) radiographic positions and/or the image quality decreases, the complexity of a chest radiograph comparison is elevated. Generally, the current body of forensic radiographic comparison literature infrequently addresses these more complex circumstances. In this paper, we use real‐world radiographic comparison reference images from a military DVI repatriation context to illustrate these factors and outline some procedures that enable these complexities to be easily recognized and appropriately addressed at case examination. A report for an exemplar case that concurrently highlights multiple factors is presented. For novices learning radiographic comparison methods, this case review saliently demonstrates: (1) why the AM reference radiograph(s) drive(s) the radiographic comparison procedure; (2) why care should be taken for correct positioning of the cervicothoracic junction in postmortem radiography of chest elements. Medical image datasets are essential for training models used in computer-aided diagnosis, treatment planning, and medical research. However, some challenges are associated with these datasets, including variability in data distribution, data scarcity, and transfer learning issues when using models pre-trained from generic images. This work studies the effect of these challenges at the intra- and inter-domain level in few-shot learning scenarios with severe data imbalance. For this, we propose a methodology based on Siamese neural networks in which a series of techniques are integrated to mitigate the effects of data scarcity and distribution imbalance. Specifically, different initialization and data augmentation methods are analyzed, and four adaptations to Siamese networks of solutions to deal with imbalanced data are introduced, including data balancing and weighted loss, both separately and combined, and with a different balance of pairing ratios. Moreover, we also assess the inference process considering four classifiers, namely Histogram, kNN, SVM, and Random Forest. Evaluation is performed on three chest X-ray datasets with annotated cases of both positive and negative COVID-19 diagnoses. The accuracy of each technique proposed for the Siamese architecture is analyzed separately. The results are compared to those obtained using equivalent methods on a state-of-the-art CNN, achieving an average F1 improvement of up to 3.6%, and up to 5.6% of F1 for intra-domain cases. We conclude that the introduced techniques offer promising improvements over the baseline in almost all cases and that the technique selection may vary depending on the amount of data available and the level of imbalance. Purpose: Managing the distal tibiofibular (DTF) joint remains a challenge despite recent developments. Ankle arthroscopy is emerging as a diagnostic and therapeutic means. Our study aimed to compare preoperative imaging data and arthroscopic data, with the hypothesis that imaging alone is insufficient to evaluate acute laxity, and with arthroscopy as the reference examination. Methods: All patients treated in 2023 in our department for an acute isolated DTF lesion were included prospectively. Preoperative radiographic and MRI imaging were compared with arthroscopic data. Results: Ten patients were treated. For five patients, the instability was doubtful after carrying out an appropriate imaging assessment (X-rays of both ankles, MRI). For four of these five patients, instability was confirmed by arthroscopy. Arthroscopy was useful for suturing the anterior bundle of the DTF joint for two patients and allowed for verifying the reduction in the sagittal and coronal planes for two patients. No complications were detected. Conclusions: Arthroscopy in isolated acute DTF lesions seems to provide a diagnostic and therapeutic advantage. Its use may allow for exhaustive assessment and complete repair of lesions. It must be offered as soon as possible; a delay in specialized imaging may delay therapeutic care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Screening trials and meta-analyses emphasize the ratio of cancer death rates in screening and control arms. However, this measure is diluted by the inclusion of deaths from cancers that only became detectable after the end of active screening. Methods: We review traditional analysis of cancer screening trials and show that ratio estimates are inevitably biased to the null, because follow-up (FU) must continue beyond the end of the screening period and thus includes cases only becoming detectable after screening ends. But because such cases are expected to occur in equal numbers in the two arms, calculation of the difference between the number of cancer deaths in the screening and control arms avoids this dilutional bias. This difference can be set against the number of invitations to screening; we illustrate by reanalyzing data from all trials of tomography screening of lung cancer (LC) using this measure. Results: In nine trials of LC screening from 2000 to 2013, a total of 94,441 high-risk patients were invited to be in screening or control groups, with high participation rates (average 95%). In the older trials comparing computed tomography to chest X-ray, 88,285 invitations averted 83 deaths (1068 per death averted (DA)). In the six more recent trials with no screening in the control group, 69,976 invitations averted 121 deaths (577 invitations per DA). Discussion: Screens per DA is an undiluted measure of screening's effect and it is unperturbed by the arbitrary duration of FU. This estimate can be useful for program planning and informed consent. We use Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) clusters with archival XMM–Newton and Chandra X-ray data to assess the centring performance of the redMaPPer cluster finder and to measure key richness observable scaling relations. We find that 10–20 per cent of redMaPPer clusters are miscentred, both when comparing to the X-ray peak position and to the visually identified central cluster galaxy. We find no significant difference in miscentring in bins of low versus high richness or redshift. The dominant reasons for miscentring include masked or missing data and the presence of other bright galaxies in the cluster. For half of the miscentred clusters, the correct central was one of the possible centrals identified by redMaPPer, while for ∼40 per cent of miscentred clusters, the correct central is not a redMaPPer member mostly due to masking. Additionally, we fit scaling relations of X-ray temperature and luminosity with richness. We find a T X–λ scatter of |$0.21\pm 0.01$|⁠. While the scatter in T X–λ is consistent in redshift bins, we find modestly different slopes, with high-redshift clusters displaying a somewhat shallower relation. Splitting based on richness, we find a marginally larger scatter for our lowest richness bin, 20 < λ < 40. We note that the robustness of the scaling relations at lower richnesses is limited by the unknown selection function, but at λ > 75, we detect nearly all of the clusters falling within existing X-ray pointings. We report on Chandra X-ray observations of SN 2016jae and SN 2018cqj, both low-luminosity Type Ia supernova (SN) that showed the presence of an H line in their early optical spectrum. No X-ray emission is detected at the location of either SN. Upper limits to the luminosity of up to 2 |$\times 10^{40}$|  erg s |$^{-1}$| are calculated for each SN, depending on the assumed spectral model, temperature, and column density. This luminosity is comparable to that of another low-luminosity Type Ia SN, SN 2018fhw, that was observed with Chandra. It is generally lower than upper limits calculated for Type Ia-CSM SNe observed in X-rays, and also below that of SN 2012ca, the only Type Ia-CSM SN to have been detected in X-rays. Comparisons are made to other Type Ia SN with an H line observed in X-rays. The observations suggest that while the density into which the SN is expanding may have been high at the time the H |$\alpha$| line was detected, it had decreased considerably by the time of X-ray observations. As the availability and importance of high energy X-ray sources grows, accurate source characterizations provide critical information for field flatness corrections, beam hardening corrections, detector response corrections, and radiation shielding assessments. This study uses MCNP6.2 to create accurate high definition angular and energy dependent X-ray source definitions for the most common high energy industrial X-ray sources at 450 kVp, 3 MVp, 6 MVp, 9 MVp, and 15 MVp. We present, in this overview article, the main features of the ID15B beamline on the new ESRF Extremely Bright Source (EBS). The ID15B beamline was fully reconstructed in 2015, considering the new capabilities of the future EBS machine. We will introduce the ID15 project, the ID15B undulator X-ray source, the optical scheme and the experimental hutch. The beamline ID15B is mostly dedicated to the determination of structural properties of solids at high pressure using angle-dispersive diffraction with diamond anvil cells. In this overview article, we present the main features of the upgraded ID27 beamline which is fully optimised to match the exceptional characteristics of the new Extremely Bright Source (EBS) of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). The ID27 beamline has been converted to a 120-m-long instrument and has undergone a major refurbishment of all its critical components including both hardware and software environments. We will successively introduce the ID27 undulator X-ray source, optical scheme and the main components of the experimental hutch. Investigation of the fruits of Rhododendron molle G. Don led to the isolation of three new grayanane-type diterpenoids, rhodomolleins LIV-LVI (1-3). The structures and absolute configurations of new compounds were fully elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, including HRESIMS, 1 D and 2 D NMR data. Compounds 1-3 were evaluated for analgesic activities utilizing an acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice. Compound 1 showed a significant antinociceptive effect with writhe inhibition rates of 72.9% and 100% at doses of 6 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg in mice, respectively. The binding mode of 1 to N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor (NSF, PDB: 6IP2) was explored by molecular docking, indicating the presence of hydrogen bond interactions which account for its analgesic activity. A significant proportion of revisions after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is attributed to the humeral component. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the radiographic and clinical outcomes of the hybrid humerus technique for RSA using a Grammont-style humeral prosthesis in an onlay fashion with metaphyseal bone impaction grafting technique and undersized stem to avoid humeral stress shielding, notching, and loosening. This is a prospective case series of patients who underwent RSA using the hybrid humerus technique with a minimum 2-year follow-up. Key steps of this technique include the use of undersized Grammont-style stem, impaction bone grafting of the proximal 5 cm of the humerus, and adjusting the height and offset of the stem depending on the patient stature, desired lateralization and distalization, and joint and soft tissue tension. Radiographic assessments were performed immediately after surgery, and at 1 and 2 years after surgery. These included assessment of metaphyseal and diaphyseal filling ratio, cortical narrowing, radiolucent lines, cortical lucencies, spot welding, scapular notching, and stem alignment. Preoperative and 2-year postoperative clinical assessments included American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, Constant-Murley Score, University of California Los Angeles score, visual analog scale for pain, and active range of motion. Correlation between the filling ratios and clinical outcomes were also evaluated. Sixty-one patients were included in the study. The average metaphyseal and diaphyseal filling ratio on the postoperative X-ray was 0.66 and 0.54, and 0.67 and 0.54 at 2 years, respectively. Stress shielding was graded as none in 24 (40.7%), mild in 33 (55.9%), and moderate in 2 (3.4%). No stem had a change in position of more than 5°. At 2 years of follow-up, no humeral implant loosening was noted, with only 2 (3.4%) of the stems at risk of loosening. Thirty-nine (66.1%) had no notching, 14 (23.7%) were graded as mild, and 6 (10.2%) had moderate signs of notching. All clinical assessments significantly improved at 2 years (P <.001), with a weak negative correlation between visual analog scale and metaphyseal filling ratio (r = −0.268, P =.036) but none between diaphyseal filling ratio and clinical outcomes. The hybrid humerus technique of metaphyseal bone grafting with a low filling ratio stem presents a promising solution for reducing humeral complications in RSA. The LM2990-integrated circuit family was among the first low-dropout voltage regulators to use a coupling diode to reduce a quiescent current. In certain conditions, the coupling diode, connected between the output terminal and the driver transistor collector contact, activates to supply the serial power transistor base current from the load. Nonetheless, an indirect characterization of the serial NPN transistor was affected, making it difficult to estimate its forward emitted current gain and a base current as a function of the absorbed total ionizing dose. The original SPICE simulation model had some limitations with generating the faithful simulation of radiation effects in samples supplied with a non-ideal voltage source. Therefore, a novel four-step computer simulation method was developed to specify bias and load conditions when the coupling diode reaction would not negatively affect the characterization of the serial power transistor. The previously reported method for estimating the serial transistor base current could be successfully used for dropout voltages that slightly exceed three equivalent diode voltage drops (that is, 2.4V) at the base-emitter junctions of the output amplifier transistors. A core motivation for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine is to reduce existing healthcare disparities. Yet, recent studies have demonstrated two distinct findings: (1) AI models can show performance biases in underserved populations, and (2) these same models can be directly trained to recognize patient demographics, such as predicting self-reported race from medical images alone. Here, we investigate how these findings may be related, with an end goal of reducing a previously identified underdiagnosis bias. Using two popular chest x-ray datasets, we first demonstrate that technical parameters related to image acquisition and processing influence AI models trained to predict patient race, where these results partly reflect underlying biases in the original clinical datasets. We then find that mitigating the observed differences through a demographics-independent calibration strategy reduces the previously identified bias. While many factors likely contribute to AI bias and demographics prediction, these results highlight the importance of carefully considering data acquisition and processing parameters in AI development and healthcare equity more broadly. Utilizing four archival X-ray data sets taken with the Hard X-ray Detector onboard Suzaku , timing studies were performed on three magnetars, 1E 1841−045 (observed in 2006), SGR 0501+4516 (2008), and 1RXS J170849.0−400910 (2009 and 2010). Their pulsations were reconfirmed, typically in an energy range of 12–50 keV. The 11.783 s pulses of 1E 1841−045 and those of SGR 0501+4516 at 5.762 s were periodically phase modulated, with a long period of |$\approx 23.4$| and |$\approx 16.4$|  ks, respectively. The pulse-phase modulation was also observed, at |$\approx 46.5$|  ks, from two data sets of 1RXS J170849.0−400910. In all these cases, the modulation amplitude was 6 per cent to 16 per cent of the pulse cycle. Including previously confirmed four objects, this characteristic timing behaviour is now detected from seven magnetars in total, and interpreted as a result of free precession of neutron stars that are deformed to an asphericity of |$\sim 10^{-4}$|⁠. Assuming that the deformation is due to magnetic stress, these magnetars are inferred to harbour toroidal magnetic fields of |$B_{\rm t}\sim 10^{16}$|  G. By comparing the estimated |$B_{\rm t}$| of these objects with their poloidal dipole field |$B_{\rm d}$|⁠ , the |$B_{\rm t}/B_{\rm d}$| ratio is found to increase with their characteristic age. Therefore, the toroidal fields of magnetars are likely to last longer than their poloidal fields. This explains the presence of some classes of neutron stars that have relatively weak |$B_{\rm d}$| but are suspected to hide strong |$B_{\rm t}$| inside them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Visual perception of X-radiation is a well-documented, but poorly understood phenomenon. Scotopic rod cells and rhodopsin have been implicated in visual responses to X-rays, however, some evidence suggests that X-rays excite the retina via a different mechanism than visible light. While rhodopsin's role in X-ray perception is unclear, the possibility that it could function as an X-ray receptor has led to speculation that it could act as a transgenically expressed X-ray receptor. If so, it could be used to transduce transcranial X-ray signals and control the activity of genetically targeted populations of neurons in a less invasive version of optogenetics, X-genetics. Here we investigate whether human rhodopsin (hRho) is capable of transducing X-ray signals when expressed outside of the retinal environment. We use a live-cell cAMP GloSensor luminescence assay to measure cAMP decreases in hRho-expressing HEK293 cells in response to visible light and X-ray stimulation. We show that cAMP GloSensor luminescence decreases are not observed in hRho-expressing HEK293 cells in response to X-ray stimulation, despite the presence of robust responses to visible light. Additionally, irradiation had no significant effect on cAMP GloSensor responses to subsequent visible light stimulation. These results suggest that ectopically expressed rhodopsin does not function as an X-ray receptor and is not capable of transducing transcranial X-ray signals into neural activity for X-ray mediated, genetically targeted neuromodulation. In this paper, a digital bio-dosimeter (DBD) with a square window size of 7 × 7 pixels is proposed for the quantitative detection of the deformed biological cells irradiated by X-rays with different energies and γ-rays from 60Co. The basic idea of the DBD is to compute the energy of the bio-dosimeter window size by summing up the entire gray levels. Peripheral blood films (PBFs) from male albino rats irradiated by ionizing radiations are prepared and photographed using an Automatic Image Contour Analysis system with high magnification to produce a 2D image. The surf function in MATLAB is used to convert the 2D image to a 3D shaded surface to resample the date more finely. The proposed DBD shows that the computed energies on the boundaries of the normal RBCs are nearly the same, while the computed energies on the boundaries of the deformed cells are significantly larger. Background: Offspring consistently exhibit similar imaging features as their parents in cases of degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS). Nevertheless, the role of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of DLS remains uncertain. Methods: A prospective analysis was conducted on 35 patients with DLS and their 36 offspring. Genomic DNA was extracted from 71 blood samples for gene mutation analysis using whole exome sequencin. Various demographic and imaging parameters were compared. Results: In 11 pedigrees of the 35 family members with DLS, 13 suspected pathogenic genes were identified. Among the 35 DLS patients, 11/35(31.5%) exhibited susceptibility gene mutations (mutant group), while 24/35(68.5%) had no pathogenic gene mutations (non-mutant group). AVR was more severe in mutant group than that in no-mutant group (p < 0.05). Among the 36 offspring, 11/36(30.6%) cohorts presented susceptibility genes (mutant group), 25/36(69.4%) cohorts presented no pathogenic genes (no-mutant group). More cohorts in the mutant group presented vertebral rotation (72.8%) and scoliosis (45.5%) than those (24%), (12%) in the no-mutant group, respectively (p < 0.05). Among the 36 offspring, 8/36(22.2%) presented scoliosis (study group), they all presented the same scoliosis orientation and apex vertebrae/disc location to their parents, the other 28/36(77.8%) cohorts without scoliosis were enrolled as control group, the mutation rate (62.5%) was higher in study group than that (21.4%) in control group. Conclusions: Genetic influences are significant in the onset of DLS, with affected families showing similar scoliosis patterns and identical apex vertebrae. We present analyses of Suzaku XIS light curves and spectra of the BL Lac object OJ 287 with observations positioned primarily around proposed recurrent optical outbursts. The first two observations were performed in 2007 April 10–13 (epoch 1) and 2007 November 7–9 (epoch 2) that, respectively, correspond to a low and a high optical state and which, within the binary supermassive black hole model for OJ 287, precede and follow the impact flare. The last three observations, made consecutively during 2015 May 3–9 (epoch 3), were during the post-impact state of the 2013 disc impact and are the longest continuous X-ray observation of OJ 287 taken before the optical outburst in 2015 December. Intraday variability is found in both the soft (0.5–2 keV) and hard (2–10 keV) bands. The discrete correction function analysis of the light curves in both bands peaks at zero lag during epochs 2 and 3, indicating that the emission in both bands was cospatial and emitted from the same population of leptons. Power spectral densities of all three light curves are red noise dominated, with a rather wide range of power spectrum slopes. These X-ray spectra are overall consistent with power laws but with significantly different spectral indices. In the 2015 observations the X-ray spectrum softens during the flare, showing an obvious soft X-ray excess that was not evident in the 2007 observations. We discuss the implications of these observations on the jet, the possible accretion disc, and the binary supermassive black hole model proposed for the nearly periodic optical flaring of OJ 287. We adopt a Bayesian X-ray spectral approach to investigate the accretion properties of unobscured (⁠|$20\lt \log (N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\lt 22$|⁠) and obscured (⁠|$22\lt \log (N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\lt 24$|⁠) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to shed light on the orientation versus evolution scenarios for the origin of the obscuring material. For a sample of 3882 X-ray-selected AGN from the Chandra COSMOS Legacy, AEGIS, and CDFS extragalactic surveys, we constrain their stellar masses, |$M_\star$|⁠ , intrinsic X-ray luminosities, |$L_{\rm X}$|⁠ , obscuring column densities, |$N_{\rm H}$|⁠ , and specific accretion rates |$\lambda \propto L_{\rm X}/M_\star$|⁠. By combining these observables within a Bayesian non-parametric approach, we infer, for the first time, the specific accretion rate distribution (SARD) of obscured and unobscured AGN to |$z\approx 3$|⁠ , i.e. the probability of a galaxy with mass |$M_\star$| at redshift z hosting an AGN with column density |$N_{\rm H}$| and specific accretion rate |$\lambda$|⁠. Our findings indicate that (1) both obscured and unobscured SARDs share similar shapes, shifting towards higher accretion rates with redshift, (2) unobscured SARDs exhibit a systematic offset towards higher |$\lambda$| compared to obscured SARD for all redshift intervals, (3) the obscured AGN fraction declines sharply at |$\log \lambda _{\rm break} \sim -2$| for |$z \lt 0.5$|⁠ , but shifts to higher |$\lambda$| values with increasing redshift, (4) the incidence of AGN within the theoretically unstable blow-out region of the |$\lambda -N_{\rm H}$| plane increases with redshift. These observations provide compelling evidence for AGN 'downsizing' and radiation-regulated nuclear-scale obscuration with an increasing host galaxy contribution towards higher redshifts. Cyclo-pentazolate salt is a typical representative of nitrogen-rich energetic materials, and its structure and safety have been the subject of intensive studies. Herein, a series of amidine-based pentazolate salts were synthesized and their structures were confirmed using X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. The crystal stacking and SEM image substantiated a layered structure. Mechanical sensitivity tests show that all the prepared salts are almost very insensitive (IS > 40 J, FS > 360 N). Moreover, the acceptable detonation performances and thermal stabilities of salts were evaluated both theoretically and experimentally. Aims and Objectives: To measure the reliability of pH testing to confirm ongoing nasogastric tube (NGT) position and to document associated complications. Background: Confirming NGT position is essential, as use of an incorrectly positioned tube can cause harm. Substantial evidence examines initial confirmation of NGT position, yet limited evidence exists considers NGT displacement which is identified via ongoing NGT position tests. In the NHS, pH testing is recommended to confirm ongoing NGT position; however, there may be an association with excess X‐rays and missed enteral nutrition and/or medications. Design: Prospective observational study using STROBE checklist. Methods: Data collected from medical records of 136 patients with NGTs in a London NHS Trust included pH tests, test results and complications related to ongoing pH tests which failed to confirm the tube was positioned in the stomach, that is, X‐rays, and disruptions to enteral nutrition and medication. Cohen's Kappa determined pH test reliability. Results: Of 1381 pH tests conducted to confirm NGT position, five (0.3%) correctly identified an NGT displacement, and one (0.07%) failed to identify displacement before use. The reliability of ongoing pH tests using Cohen's Kappa was minimal (0.29). Ongoing pH tests that failed to confirm a correctly positioned NGT led to 31 (22.8%) patients having X‐rays, 24 (17.6%) missing >10% of prescribed enteral nutrition and 25 (18.4%) missing a critical medication. Conclusion: Ongoing NGT position testing using pH tests did not prevent the use of a displaced tube, and more than one‐fifth of patients required X‐rays to confirm a correctly position NGT, contributing to missed medications and enteral nutrition. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Caution should be used when confirming ongoing NGT position with a pH test. Future guidelines should balance the risk of using a displaced tube with potential delays to nutrition and/or medication. Co(III) complexes of the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand PY4Im (PY4Im = (1,3-bis(bis(2-pyridyl)methyl)imidazol-2-ylidene)) having the general formula [(PY4Im)Co(X)](ClO4)n (X = NCMe; n = 3: OH−, N3−, NCS−, ONO−, F−; n = 2: O2CO2−, n = 1; (N3−)3, n = 0) were prepared and structurally characterised. X-ray structural data are consistent with the presence of a trans influence due to the coordinated carbene carbon, and this is also supported by computational results. 13C NMR spectra of the complexes did not display peaks corresponding to the carbene carbon, except in the case of the [(PY4Im)Co(O2CO)]+ cation, where a peak at δ = 170.21 ppm was observed. However, HMBC spectra allowed indirect determination of the chemical shifts of the carbene carbon in the remaining complexes, owing to the geometry of the PY4Im ligand. A series of cyclometalated (N^C^N) Pt(II)-platinum complexes featuring a terpyridine ligand with a non-coordinating nitrogen atom and a Pt–C bond was synthesized. In the presence of Ag+, the bis(isonitrile)Pt(II) complex formed a remarkable self-assembled helicoidal dimer stabilized by coordination of Ag(I) and metallophilic Pt–Ag interactions. Its assembly was observed in the solid state and maintained in solution. All complexes show strong luminescence and multiple emitting states, which could be rationalized based on solid state X-ray structures and coordinating environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lu 2 O 2 S has high density, high melting temperature, and favorable thermal stability, making it an excellent matrix material for rare earth luminescence and X-ray sensitization screens. However, achieving high quality fluorescent powders with high crystal quality on a large scale is still challenging. By employing an optimized solid phase approach, Lu 2 O 2 S:Tb3+/Sm3+phosphors with a hexagonal shape and uniform particle size and showing high crystallization have been successfully synthesized. Spectral analysis reveals energy interaction between Sm3+ and Tb3+ in the Lu 2 O 2 S system (multistage interaction), indicated by spectral overlap, relative changes in luminescence intensity, and lifetime decay. By changing the excitation wavelength and dopant concentration, multicolor phosphors such as yellow-–green, orange–red, and orange–yellow could be created. Temperature-dependent emission spectroscopy shows that the system shows good luminescence performance even at high temperatures. X-ray excitation spectroscopy further confirm that the phosphors emit different colors (yellow, green and red) depending on the doping concentrations of Tb3+ and Sm3+ ion, indicating that the system has wide application potential in color displays and other relevant fields. Twelve spiro thiazolidinone compounds (A–L) were synthesized via either conventional thermal or ultrasonication techniques using Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The modification of the traditional procedure by using Fe2O3 nanoparticles led to enhancement of the yield of the desired candidates to 78–93% in approximately half reaction time compared with 58–79% without catalyst. The products were fully characterized using different analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The structure of the two derivatives 4-phenyl-1-thia-4-azaspirodecan-3-one (A) and 4-(p-tolyl)-1-thia-4-azaspirodecan-3-one (B) were also determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction and Hirshfeld surface analysis. The two compounds (A and B) were crystallized in the orthorhombic system with Pbca and P212121 space groups, respectively. In addition, the crystal packing of compounds revealed the formation of supramolecular array with a net of intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. The energy optimized geometries of some selected derivatives were performed by density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP). The reactivity descriptors were also calculated and correlated with their biological properties. All the reported compounds were screened for antimicrobial inhibitions. The two derivatives, F and J, exhibited the highest levels of bacterial inhibition with an inhibition zone of 10–17 mm. Also, the two derivatives, F and J, displayed the most potent fungal inhibition with an inhibition zone of 15–23 mm. Molecular docking investigations of some selected derivatives were performed using a B-DNA (PDB: 1BNA) as a macromolecular target. COVID-19 detection is mainly based on molecular testing, especially polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses, to find the occurrence of the virus's genetic material in respiratory samples. Computed tomography (CT) scans and X-rays are the two chest imaging techniques, which may provide more details on lungs, aiding in the diagnosis. Radiological findings in COVID-19 cases typically involve special features such as bilateral involvement, ground-glass opacities, and consolidation of the lungs. Deep learning (DL) methods, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are used for analyzing COVID-19 infection. By training these techniques on large datasets of annotated chest X-rays (CXRs), researches have attained superior outcomes in precisely detecting the possible COVID-19 cases. Leveraging artificial intelligence together with radiological expertise holds great potential for facilitating prompt intervention in the ongoing global efforts and improving the efficiency of early detection. This article focuses on the design of mother optimization algorithm with DL-enabled detection and classification (MOA-DLEDC) technique for COVID-19 diagnosis using CXR images. In the MOA-DLEDC technique, the adaptive median filtering (AMF) approach is used to eliminate the existence of noise. In addition, the complex and intrinsic feature patterns are derived from the Efficient DenseNet model. Besides, the hyperparameter optimization of the Efficient DenseNet model takes place using MOA. For the COVID-19 detection process, the MOA-DLEDC technique applies sparse autoencoder (SAE) model. A detailed set of experiments was conducted on the CXR dataset to highlight the promising results of the MOA-DLEDC technique. Summary: Pneumonia disease progress rapidly leading to missed diagnosis and diagnosis error. However, it is significant to be diagnosed accurately as well as adopted timely treatments, particularly for children and elderly people over 65. In the first place, we propose a novel method for data augmentation to expand non‐case samples in order to solve the problem of imbalance of the raw data. Then we have designed a neural network based on separable convolution layers, using deep learning to classify between Pneumonia cases and normal cases from chest X‐ray images. Finally, well‐known performance measures are utilized to evaluate our model, obtaining the following results: Accuracy (0.97), AUC (0.99), Sensitivity (0.98), Specificity (0.98), Precision (0.95), F1‐Score (0.97), and Youden Index (0.90). Simultaneously, we highlighted the proposed neural network recognition area via Class Activation Method for the purpose of providing an explainable diagnosis. Compared with the‐state‐of‐art models, our model performed better, and it may be regarded as an alternative in countries or regions lack of the relevant equipment and professional radiologists.
