Abstract Dynamic axion insulators feature a time-dependent axion field that can be induced by antiferromagnetic resonance. Here, we show that a Josephson junction incorporating this dynamic axion insulator between two superconductors exhibits striking doubled Shapiro steps wherein all odd steps are completely suppressed in the joint presence of a DC bias and a static magnetic field. The resistively shunted junction simulation confirms that these doubled Shapiro steps originate from the distinctive axion electrodynamics driven by the antiferromagnetic resonance, which thus not only furnishes a hallmark to identify the dynamic axion insulator but also provides a method to evaluate its mass term. Furthermore, the experimentally feasible differential conductance is also determined. Our work holds significant importance in condensed matter physics and materials science for understanding the dynamic axion insulator, paving the way for its further exploration and applications.

Abstract In van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs), the manipulation of interlayer stacking/coupling allows for the construction of customizable quantum systems exhibiting exotic physics. An illustrative example is the diverse range of states of matter achieved through varying the proximity coupling between two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin liquid (QSL) and superconductors within the TaS2 family. This study presents a demonstration of the intertwined physics of spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking, hidden magnetism, and Ising superconductivity (SC) in the three-fold rotationally symmetric, non-magnetic natural vdWHs 6R-TaS2. A distinctive phase emerges in 6R-TaS2 below a characteristic temperature (T *) of approximately 30 K, which is characterized by a remarkable set of features, including a giant extrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE), Kondo screening, magnetic field-tunable thermal hysteresis, and nematic magneto-resistance. At lower temperatures, a coexistence of nematicity and Kondo screening with Ising superconductivity is observed, providing compelling evidence of hidden magnetism within a superconductor. This research not only sheds light on unexpected emergent physics resulting from the coupling of itinerant electrons and localized/correlated electrons in natural vdWHs but also emphasizes the potential for tailoring exotic quantum states through the manipulation of interlayer interactions.

Abstract Transition metal compounds with kagome structure have been found to exhibit a variety of exotic structural, electronic, and magnetic orders. These orders are competing with energies very close to each other, resulting in complex phase transitions. Some of the phases are easily observable, such as the charge density wave (CDW) and the superconducting phase, while others are more challenging to identify and characterize. Here we present magneto-transport evidence of a new phase below ~ 35 K in the kagome topological metal CsV3Sb5 (CVS) thin flakes between the CDW and the superconducting transition temperatures. This phase is characterized by six-fold rotational symmetry in the in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) and is connected to the orbital current order in CVS. Furthermore, the phase is characterized by a large in-plane negative magnetoresistance, which suggests the existence of a three-dimensional, magnetic field-tunable orbital current ordered phase. Our results highlight the potential of magneto-transport to reveal the interactions between exotic quantum states of matter and to uncover the symmetry of such hidden phases.

Abstract Axion insulators possess a quantized axion field θ = π protected by combined lattice and time-reversal symmetry, holding great potential for device applications in layertronics and quantum computing. Here, we propose a high-spin axion insulator (HSAI) defined in large spin-s representation, which maintains the same inherent symmetry but possesses a notable axion field θ = (s + 1/2)2 π. Such distinct axion field is confirmed independently by the direct calculation of the axion term using hybrid Wannier functions, layer-resolved Chern numbers, as well as the topological magneto-electric effect. We show that the guaranteed gapless quasi-particle excitation is absent at the boundary of the HSAI despite its integer surface Chern number, hinting an unusual quantum anomaly violating the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. Furthermore, we ascertain that the axion field θ can be precisely tuned through an external magnetic field, enabling the manipulation of bonded transport properties. The HSAI proposed here can be experimentally verified in ultra-cold atoms by the quantized non-reciprocal conductance or topological magnetoelectric response. Our work enriches the understanding of axion insulators in condensed matter physics, paving the way for future device applications.

Abstract A quantized Hall conductance (not conductivity) in three dimensions has been searched for more than 30 years. Here we explore it in 3D topological nodal-ring semimetals, by employing a minimal model describing the essential physics. In particular, the bulk topology can be captured by a momentum-dependent winding number, which confines the drumhead surface states in a specific momentum region. This confinement leads to a surface quantum Hall conductance in a specific energy window in this 3D system. The winding number for the drumhead surface states and Chern number for their quantum Hall effect form a two-fold topological hierarchy. We demonstrate the one-to-one correspondence between the momentum-dependent winding number and wavefunction of the drumhead surface states. More importantly, we stress that breaking chiral symmetry is necessary for the quantum Hall effect of the drumhead surface states. The analytic theory can be verified numerically by the Kubo formula for the Hall conductance. We propose an experimental setup to distinguish the surface and bulk quantum Hall effects. The theory will be useful for ongoing explorations on nodal-ring semimetals.

Abstract Itinerant kagome lattice magnets exhibit many novel correlated and topological quantum electronic states with broken time-reversal symmetry. Superconductivity, however, has not been observed in this class of materials, presenting a roadblock in a promising path toward topological superconductivity. Here, we report that novel superconductivity can emerge at the interface of kagome Chern magnet TbMn6Sn6 and metal heterostructures when elemental metallic thin films are deposited on either the top (001) surface or the side surfaces. Superconductivity is also successfully induced and systematically studied by using various types of metallic tips on different TbMn6Sn6 surfaces in point-contact measurements. The anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field suggests that the emergent superconductivity is quasi-two-dimensional. Remarkably, the interface superconductor couples to the magnetic order of the kagome metal and exhibits a hysteretic magnetoresistance in the superconducting states. Taking into account the spin-orbit coupling, the observed interface superconductivity can be a surprising and more realistic realization of the p-wave topological superconductors theoretically proposed for two-dimensional semiconductors proximity-coupled to s-wave superconductors and insulating ferromagnets. Our findings of robust superconductivity in topological-Chern-magnet/metal heterostructures offer a new direction for investigating spin-triplet pairing and topological superconductivity.

Abstract The static topological fractional charge (TFC) in condensed matter systems is related to the band topology and thus has potential applications in topological quantum computation. However, the experimental measurement of these TFCs in electronic systems is quite challenging. We propose an electronic transport measurement scheme in which both the charge amount and the spatial distribution of the TFC can be extracted from the differential conductance through a quantum dot coupled to the topological system being measured. For one-dimensional Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model, both the e/2 charge of the TFC and its distribution can be verified. As for the disorder effect, it is shown that the Anderson disorder, which breaks certain symmetry related to the TFC, is significant in higher-dimensional systems while having little effect on the one-dimensional SSH chain. Nonetheless, our measurement scheme can still work well for specific higher-order topological insulator materials, for instance, the 2e/3 TFC in the breathing kagome model could be confirmed even in the presence of disorder effect. These conclusions about spatial dimension and disorder effect are quite universal, which also applies to other topological systems such as topological classic wave system.

Abstract Anisotropy is a manifestation of lowered symmetry in material systems that have profound fundamental and technological implications. For van der Waals magnets, the two-dimensional (2D) nature greatly enhances the effect of in-plane anisotropy. However, electrical manipulation of such anisotropy as well as demonstration of possible applications remains elusive. In particular, in-situ electrical modulation of anisotropy in spin transport, vital for spintronics applications, has yet to be achieved. Here, we realized giant electrically tunable anisotropy in the transport of second harmonic thermal magnons (SHM) in van der Waals anti-ferromagnetic insulator CrPS4 with the application of modest gate current. Theoretical modeling found that 2D anisotropic spin Seebeck effect is the key to the electrical tunability. Making use of such large and tunable anisotropy, we demonstrated multi-bit read-only memories (ROMs) where information is inscribed by the anisotropy of magnon transport in CrPS4. Our result unveils the potential of anisotropic van der Waals magnons for information storage and processing.

A quantized plateau is typically considered to be the feature of a fractional quantum Hall state. Yan et al. report a series of plateaus quantized at unusual fractions in a confined two-dimensional electron gas, which is attributed to enhanced density in the confined region.

In topological condensed-matter systems, axion insulators are elusive excitation and active research in running to spot their signature. In this work, the authors theoretically propose a picture to characterize the surface of axion insulators and a possible detection scheme for thermal transport experiments with a precisely half-quantized outcome.

A major challenge in magnon based approaches to information processing lies in developing valves to allow or supress the magnon signal. Here, Chen et al demonstrate a van der Waals magnet based magnon valve which can be tuned electrically over an exceptionally wide range.

Abstract The classical and quantum Hall effects are important subjects in condensed matter physics. The emergent 3D quantum Hall effects and nonlinear Hall effect have attracted considerable interest recently, with the former elevating the quantum Hall effect to a higher dimension and the latter extending the Hall effect to higher-order responses. In this perspective, we briefly introduce these two new members of the Hall family and discuss the open questions and future research directions.

The interfaces between ferromagnets and superconductors receive many attentions due to emergent relativistic spin-orbit coupling. Here, the authors provide possible evidence for spin triplet Andreev reflection at the interface between a van der Waals ferromagnet Fe0.29TaS2 and a s-wave superconductor NbN.

The nonlinear Hall effect is a quantum phenomenon, in which two perpendicular currents induce a Hall voltage; however, previous theories for this effect has remained at the semi classical level. Here, the authors develop a full quantum theory of the nonlinear Hall effect by using the diagrammatic technique.

Understanding the critical scaling behaviors of quantum phase transitions can provide profound physical implications. Here, the authors report temperature dependence of the derivative of longitudinal resistance at a magnetic-field induced quantum phase transition between the quantum anomalous Hall insulator to the axion insulator in magnetic topological insulator sandwich samples.

Fractional quantum Hall states in 2D electron gases arise due to strong electron-electron interactions, which makes a general theoretical understanding difficult. Fu et al. present data showing the ν = 5/3 quantum Hall state has a 3/2 plateau in the diagonal resistance that has not been captured by existing models.

Evidence of quantum phase transitions is normally difficult to be detected. Here, Liu and Wang et al. report divergent critical exponent in ultrathin Pb films with superconducting fluctuations and spin-orbit interaction, indicating an anomalous quantum Griffiths singularity of superconductor-metal transition.

Disorder may play a dominant role in determining the nonlinear Hall effect in a topological material. Here, Du et al. derive formulas of the nonlinear Hall conductivity and construct the general scaling law of the nonlinear Hall effect in a tilted two dimensional Dirac model.

Disorder effects inevitably exist in realistic samples, manifesting in various physical properties. In this paper, we review the recent progress in understanding the disorder effects on quantum transport and quantum phase transition properties in low-dimensional superconducting and topological systems. As a consequence of the pronounced quantum fluctuation in low-dimensional systems, rare events drastically change the physical characteristics and underlying microscopic transport process in these systems, which are beyond the traditional paradigms. Associating with recent experimental observations, we emphasize the microscopic mechanism for disordered Ising superconductivity, the quantum Griffiths singularity of superconductor metal transition and the discrete scale invariance in topological materials.

The recent experimental observations of the quantum Hall effect in three-dimensional (3D) topological semimetals have attracted great attention, but there are still debates on its origin. We systematically study the dependence of the quantum Hall effect in topological semimetals on the thickness, Fermi energy, and growth direction, taking into account the contributions from the Fermi-arc surface states, confinement-induced bulk subbands, and helical side-surface edge states. In particular, we focus on the intensively studied Dirac semimetal Cd_{3}As_{2} and its slabs grown along experimentally accessible directions, including [001], [110], and [112]. We reveal an ignored mechanism from the Zeeman splitting of the helical edge states, which along with Fermi-arc 3D quantum Hall effect, may give a nonmonotonic dependence of the Hall conductance plateaus on the magnetic field in the most experimentally studied [112] direction slab. Our results will be insightful for exploring the quantum Hall effects beyond two dimensions.

Spin injection in pure topological surface states of topological insulators is challenging due to the coexistence of highly conducting bulk states. Here, Song et al. report spin injection and inverse Edelstein effect in the spin–momentum locked surface states of topological Kondo insulator SmB6.

The spin-polarized even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in the second Landau level (LL), i.e., 5/2 and 7/2, may possess novel quasiparticle excitations obeying non-Abelian statistics. However, the spin polarization of the 7/2 FQH state has not been investigated experimentally and the spin polarization of the 5/2 FQH state from tilted-field experiments remains controversial. Using a piezodriven sample rotator with the lowest electron temperature down to 25 mK, we studied the energy gap of the even-denominator FQH states in the second LL by precise control of the tilted angles with a resolution less than 0.1°. We observed two different energy gap dependences on the in-plane magnetic field for 5/2, 7/2, other FQH states (7/3 and 8/3) in the second LL, and reentrant integer quantum Hall (RIQH) states in the third LL. Though the transition fields vary from states, their corresponding in-plane magnetic lengths are comparable to the quantum well thickness of the sample, which may result from the influence of the finite-thickness effect. At low in-plane magnetic fields, before the conjectured finite-thickness effect starts to dominate, the energy gaps of both 5/2 and 7/2 states show a nondecreasing behavior, supporting spin-polarized ground states. Our results also suggest that the 7/3, 8/3 FQH states, and the RIQH states in the third LL are spin polarized or partially spin polarized.

The recent emergence of 2D van der Waals magnets down to atomic-layer thickness provides an exciting platform for exploring quantum magnetism and spintronics applications. The van der Waals nature stabilizes the long-range ferromagnetic order as a result of magnetic anisotropy. Furthermore, giant tunneling magnetoresistance and electrical control of magnetism have been reported. However, the potential of 2D van der Waals magnets for magnonics, magnon-based spintronics, has not been explored yet. Here, we report the experimental observation of long-distance magnon transport in quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet MnPS_{3}, which demonstrates the 2D magnets as promising material candidates for magnonics. As the 2D MnPS_{3} thickness decreases, a shorter magnon diffusion length is observed, which could be attributed to the surface-impurity-induced magnon scattering. Our results could pave the way for exploring quantum magnonics phenomena and designing future magnonics devices based on 2D van der Waals magnets.

Two-dimensional (2D) superconducting systems are of great importance for exploring exotic quantum physics. The recent development of fabrication techniques has stimulated studies of high-quality single-crystalline 2D superconductors, where intrinsic properties give rise to unprecedented physical phenomena. Here, we report the observation of Zeeman-type spin-orbit interaction protected superconductivity (Zeeman-protected superconductivity) in 4-monolayer (ML) to 6-ML crystalline Pb films grown on striped incommensurate Pb layers on Si(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. An anomalously large in-plane critical field far beyond the Pauli limit is detected, which can be attributed to the Zeeman-protected superconductivity due to the in-plane inversion symmetry breaking at the interface. Our work demonstrates that, in superconducting heterostructures, the interface can induce Zeeman-type spin-orbit interactions and modulate the superconductivity.

We study the phonon-mediated superconductivity in light doped ABA-stacked trilayer graphene system by means of two theoretical models. We find superconducting transition temperature TC can be greatly enlarged by tuning the Fermi energy away from neutral point. Utilizing realistic parameters, we find Tc is approximately 1 K even under weak doping condition EF = 0.1 eV. Specifically, we give out the analytical expression for superconductivity gap △ and superconducting transition temperature Tc for negative-U Hubbard model. Further, we consider the thermal fluctuation and calculate the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless critical temperature TBKT. Besides, we consider a two-band BCS model in comparision with the negative-U Hubbard model. The results for both models are qualitatively consistent. Our study provides a promising possibility for realizing intrinsic superconductivity in multilayer graphene systems.

Three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetals have a linear dispersion in 3D momentum space and are viewed as the 3D analogues of graphene. Here, we report angle-dependent magnetotransport on the newly revealed Cd_{3}As_{2} single crystals and clearly show how the Fermi surface evolves with crystallographic orientations. Remarkably, when the magnetic field lies in the [112] or [441[over ¯]] axis, magnetoresistance oscillations with only single period are present. However, the oscillation shows double periods when the field is applied along the [11[over ¯]0] direction. Moreover, aligning the magnetic field at certain directions also gives rise to double period oscillations. We attribute the observed anomalous oscillation behavior to the sophisticated geometry of Fermi surface and illustrate a complete 3D Fermi surface with two nested anisotropic ellipsoids around the Dirac points. Additionally, a submillimeter mean-free path at 6 K is found in Cd_{3}As_{2} crystals, indicating ballistic transport in this material. By measuring the magnetoresistance up to 60 T, we reach the quantum limit (n=1 Landau level) at about 43 T. These results improve the knowledge of the Dirac semimetal material Cd_{3}As_{2} and also pave the way for proposing new electronic applications based on 3D Dirac materials.
