Abstract Background Somatic mutations in the EGFR gene occur in about 50% of non-small cell lung cancers, with the T790M mutation significantly contributing to secondary resistance against EGFR-TKI drugs. However, EGFR T790M germline mutations rarely occur. Case presentation In this study, we report a case of a lung adenocarcinoma family lineage linked to a germline EGFR T790M mutation. The main subject was diagnosed with stage IV lung adenocarcinoma and experienced a 19-month period without disease progression while treated with Osimertinib. We collected both clinicopathological and familial data from a patient with lung adenocarcinoma. Next-generation sequencing of 40 key genes was performed on the proband’s tumor tissue. To detect EGFR germline mutations, Sanger sequencing was conducted on peripheral blood mononuclear cells from the proband and his two daughters. Mutations such as EGFR T790M, EGFR 19-Del, TP53, and PIK3CA were identified in the proband’s lung cancer tissue. Additionally, germline EGFR T790M mutations were confirmed in the proband and his daughters through sequencing of their peripheral blood samples. CT scans revealed multiple pulmonary nodules in both daughters. Conclusions These observations suggest that germline mutations in EGFR T790M could be strongly linked to a familial predisposition to lung cancer.

Abstract Field-effect transistors (FETs) based on two-dimensional materials (2DMs) with atomically thin channels have emerged as a promising platform for beyond-silicon electronics. However, low carrier mobility in 2DM transistors driven by phonon scattering remains a critical challenge. To address this issue, we propose the controlled introduction of localized tensile strain as an effective means to inhibit electron-phonon scattering in 2DM. Strain is achieved by conformally adhering the 2DM via van der Waals forces to a dielectric layer previously nanoengineered with a gray-tone topography. Our results show that monolayer MoS2 FETs under tensile strain achieve an 8-fold increase in on-state current, reaching mobilities of 185 cm²/Vs at room temperature, in good agreement with theoretical calculations. The present work on nanotopographic grayscale surface engineering and the use of high-quality dielectric materials has the potential to find application in the nanofabrication of photonic and nanoelectronic devices.

Abstract Microorganisms consume and transform dissolved organic matter (DOM) into various forms. However, it remains unclear whether the ecological patterns and drivers of DOM chemodiversity are analogous to those of microbial communities. Here, a large-scale investigation is conducted along the Chinese coasts to resolve the intrinsic linkages among the complex intertidal DOM pools, microbial communities and environmental heterogeneity. The abundance of DOM molecular formulae best fits log-normal distribution and follows Taylor’s Law. Distance-decay relationships are observed for labile molecular formulae, while latitudinal diversity gradients are noted for recalcitrant molecular formulae. Latitudinal patterns are also observed for DOM molecular features. Negative cohesion, bacterial diversity, and molecular traits are the main drivers of DOM chemodiversity. Stochasticity analyses demonstrate that determinism dominantly shapes the DOM compositional variations. This study unveils the intrinsic mechanisms underlying the intertidal DOM chemodiversity and microbial communities from ecological perspectives, deepening our understanding of microbially driven chemical ecology.

Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is highly prevalent in individuals with schizophrenia (SZ), leading to negative consequences like premature mortality. Gut dysbiosis, which refers to an imbalance of the microbiota, and chronic inflammation are associated with both SZ and MetS. However, the relationship between gut dysbiosis, host immunological dysfunction, and SZ comorbid with MetS (SZ-MetS) remains unclear. This study aims to explore alterations in gut microbiota and their correlation with immune dysfunction in SZ-MetS, offering new insights into its pathogenesis. Methods and results We enrolled 114 Chinese patients with SZ-MetS and 111 age-matched healthy controls from Zhejiang, China, to investigate fecal microbiota using Illumina MiSeq sequencing targeting 16 S rRNA gene V3-V4 hypervariable regions. Host immune responses were assessed using the Bio-Plex Pro Human Cytokine 27-Plex Assay to examine cytokine profiles. In SZ-MetS, we observed decreased bacterial α-diversity and significant differences in β-diversity. LEfSe analysis identified enriched acetate-producing genera (Megamonas and Lactobacillus), and decreased butyrate-producing bacteria (Subdoligranulum, and Faecalibacterium) in SZ-MetS. These altered genera correlated with body mass index, the severity of symptoms (as measured by the Scale for Assessment of Positive Symptoms and Scale for Assessment of Negative Symptoms), and triglyceride levels. Altered bacterial metabolic pathways related to lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, lipid metabolism, and various amino acid metabolism were also found. Additionally, SZ-MetS exhibited immunological dysfunction with increased pro-inflammatory cytokines, which correlated with the differential genera. Conclusion These findings suggested that gut microbiota dysbiosis and immune dysfunction play a vital role in SZ-MetS development, highlighting potential therapeutic approaches targeting the gut microbiota. While these therapies show promise, further mechanistic studies are needed to fully understand their efficacy and safety before clinical implementation.

Abstract Background Childbirth pain is a physiological phenomenon during the delivery process, the intense pain of childbirth could bring harmful effects to pregnant women and their babies. Assessment of childbirth pain is the first step in childbirth pain intervention. Some pain assessment scales have shortcomings such as interfering in the birthing process and affecting pain perception during delivery, while the Rating Scale of Pain Expression during Childbirth (ESVADOPA) could be used as an auxiliary scale to compensate for these shortcomings. The purpose of this study was to introduce the ESVADOPA and adapt it among Chinese pregnant women to check on the psychometric properties of the translated version of ESVADOPA. Methods A new translation model based on Brislin’s classical back translation model was used to translate and cross-cultural adapt the ESVADOPA. During June 2021 and June 2022, pregnant women at Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University were invited. In the stage of translation and cross-culturally adaptation, 18 midwives and 30 pregnant women were invited to participate in the first round of pre-experiment. And in the second round of pre-experiment, 15 midwives and 20 pregnant women were invited to participate. The Chinese version of ESVADOPA was tested on a group of pregnant women (N = 487). Construct validity was evaluated by exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and criterion-related validity. Reliability was assessed by Cronbach’s α coefficient, McDonald Omega, Spearman-Brown split-half reliability and Guttman split-half reliability. Results The item statistical analysis and construct validity resulted in six items and one factor that explained 61.064% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the data fit the one-factor structure. Criterion-related validity indicated that the scale is significantly and positively correlated with the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Cronbach’s α coefficient, McDonald Omega, Spearman-Brown split-half reliability, and Guttman split-half reliability of the Chinese version of ESVADOPA were 0.868, 0.896, 0.845, 0.842, respectively. Conclusion The Chinese version of the ESVADOPA with good reliability and validity data could be used to assess the pain rating of pregnant women during childbirth without interfering in the birthing process.

Abstract Addressing burdens of electronic waste (E-waste) leachate while achieving sustainable and selective recovery of noble metals, such as gold, is highly demanded due to its limited supply and escalating prices. Here we demonstrate an environmentally-benign and practical approach for gold recovery from E-waste leachate using alginate-derived pyrocarbon sorbent. The sorbent demonstrates potent gold recovery performance compared to most previously reported advanced sorbents, showcasing high recovery capacity of 2829.7 mg g−1, high efficiency (>99.5%), remarkable selectivity (K d ~ 3.1 × 108 mL g−1), and robust anti-interference capabilities within environmentally relevant contexts. The aromatic structures of pyrocarbon serve as crucial electrons sources, enabling a hydroxylation process that simultaneously generates electrons and phenolic hydroxyls for the reduction of gold ions. Our investigations further uncover a “stepwise” nucleation mechanism, in which gold ions are reduced as intermediate gold-chlorine clusters, facilitating rapid reduction process by lowering energy barriers from 1.08 to −21.84 eV. Technoeconomic analysis demonstrates its economic viability with an input-output ratio as high as 1370%. Our protocol obviates the necessity for organic reagents whilst obtaining 23.96 karats gold product from real-world central processing units (CPUs) leachates. This work introduces a green sorption technique for gold recovery, emphasizing its role in promoting a circular economy and environmental sustainability.

Abstract Anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis employing non-precious metal electrocatalysts is a promising strategy for achieving sustainable hydrogen production. However, it still suffers from many challenges, including sluggish alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics, insufficient activity and limited lifetime of non-precious metal electrocatalysts for ampere-level-current-density alkaline HER. Here, we report an efficient alkaline HER strategy at industrial-level current density wherein a flexible WS2 superstructure is designed to serve as the cathode catalyst for AEM water electrolysis. The superstructure features bond-free van der Waals interaction among the low Young’s modulus nanosheets to ensure excellent mechanical flexibility, as well as a stepped edge defect structure of nanosheets to realize high catalytic activity and a favorable reaction interface micro-environment. The unique flexible WS2 superstructure can effectively withstand the impact of high-density gas-liquid exchanges and facilitate mass transfer, endowing excellent long-term durability under industrial-scale current density. An AEM electrolyser containing this catalyst at the cathode exhibits a cell voltage of 1.70 V to deliver a constant catalytic current density of 1 A cm−2 over 1000 h with a negligible decay rate of 9.67 μV h−1.

Background: When resuscitating patients with septic shock, cerebrovascular reactivity parameters are calculated by monitoring regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) using near-infrared spectroscopy to determine the optimal blood pressure. Here, we aimed to analyze the impact of cerebral autoregulation-directed optimal blood pressure management on the incidence of delirium and the prognosis of patients with septic shock. Methods: This prospective randomized controlled clinical study was conducted in the Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, China. Fifty-one patients with septic shock (December 2020–May 2022) were enrolled and randomly allocated to the experimental (n=26) or control group (n=25). Using the ICM+ software, we monitored the dynamic changes in rSO2 and mean arterial pressure (MAP) and calculated the cerebrovascular reactivity parameter tissue oxygen reactivity index to determine the optimal blood pressure to maintain normal cerebral autoregulation function during resuscitation in the experimental group. The control group was treated according to the Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines. Differences in the incidence of delirium and 28-day mortality between the two groups were compared, and the risk factors were analyzed. Results: The 51 patients, including 39 male and 12 female, had a mean age of (57.0±14.9) years. The incidence of delirium was 40.1% (23/51), and the 28-day mortality rate was 29.4% (15/51). The mean MAP during the first 24 h of intensive care unit (ICU) admission was higher ([84.5±12.2] mmHg vs. [77.4±11.8] mmHg, P=0.040), and the incidence of delirium was lower (30.8% vs. 60.0%, P=0.036) in the experimental group than in the control group. The use of cerebral autoregulation-directed optimal blood pressure (odds ratio [OR]=0.090, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.009 to 0.923, P=0.043) and length of ICU stay (OR=1.473, 95% CI: 1.093 to 1.985, P=0.011) were risk factors for delirium during septic shock. Vasoactive drug dose (OR=8.445, 95% CI: 1.26 to 56.576, P=0.028) and partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) (OR=0.958, 95% CI: 0.921 to 0.996, P=0.032) were the risk factors for 28-day mortality. Conclusions: The use of cerebral autoregulation-directed optimal blood pressure management during shock resuscitation reduces the incidence of delirium in patients with septic shock. Abstract As the central members of the microbiome networks, viruses regulate the composition of microbial communities and drive the nutrient cycles of ecosystems by lysing host cells. Therefore, uncovering the dynamic patterns and the underlying ecological mechanisms mediating the tiniest viral communities across space and through time in natural ecosystems is of crucial importance for better understanding the complex microbial world. Here, the temporal dynamics of intertidal viral communities were investigated via a time-series sampling effort. A total of 1911 viral operational taxonomic units were recovered from 36 bimonthly collected shotgun metagenomes. Functionally important auxiliary metabolic genes involved in carbohydrate, sulfur, and phosphorus metabolism were detected, some of which (e.g., cysH gene) were stably present within viral genomes over time. Over the sampling period, strong and comparable temporal turnovers were observed for intertidal viromes and their host microbes. Winter was determined as the pivotal point for the shifts in viral diversity patterns. Notably, the viral micro-diversity covaried with the macro-diversity, following similar temporal patterns. The relative abundances of viral taxa also covaried with their host prokaryotes. Meanwhile, the virus–host relationships at the whole community level were relatively stable. Further statistical analyses demonstrated that the dynamic patterns of viral communities were highly deterministic, for which temperature was the major driver. This study provided valuable mechanistic insights into the temporal turnover of viral communities in complex ecosystems such as intertidal wetlands.

Abstract Background Recent studies have suggested that the N-terminal fragment of B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level serve as a significant risk factor for mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease. However, the relationship between NT-proBNP levels and technique failure in peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (PDAP) remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between NT-proBNP levels at the onset of PDAP and the risk of technique failure in patients with PDAP. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with PDAP from December 1, 2009, to December 31, 2021, at our peritoneal dialysis center. We recorded all demographic and baseline clinical data at the time of admission for each PDAP episode. Logistic and Cox regression analyses were performed to assess the association between NT-proBNP levels and technique failure. Results Of 485 PDAP episodes included in this study, 130 episodes of technique failure were observed. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed that hospital stay, Na and NT-proBNP levels, and peritoneal dialysate white blood cell counts on days 3 and 5 were independently associated with technique failure. The receiver operating characteristic curve demonstrated that the NT-proBNP level was a better indicator than the other four variables in indicating technique failure. Abstract Since the reform and opening up in 1978, the Dasi River Basin within Jinan’s startup area from replacing old growth drivers with new ones (startup area) has experienced rapid urbanization and industrialization, and the landscape pattern has changed significantly, resulting in a series of eco-environmental problems. In order to more accurately identify the vulnerable areas of landscape pattern, understand their cause mechanism and changing laws, and provide a theoretical basis for the implementation of sustainable landscape pattern planning and management in the region. Four Landsat images of 2002, 2009, 2015 and 2020 were taken as data sources, and the optimal granularity of landscape pattern analysis was determined from the perspective of landscape level and class level by using the coefficient of variation method, granularity effect curve and information loss model, and the optimal amplitude was determined by using the grid method and semi-variance function. Then, the landscape vulnerability assessment model was constructed based on the optimal scale, and its spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and spatial autocorrelation were analyzed. The result showed that: (1) The optimal granularity of landscape pattern analysis in this study area was 80 m, and the optimal amplitude was 350 × 350 m. (2) During 2002–2020, the overall vulnerability of landscape pattern in the southern part of the study area showed an increasing trend, while that in the middle and northern parts showed a decreasing trend. (3) The mean values of the vulnerability index of the overall landscape pattern in 2002, 2009, 2015 and 2020 were 0.1479, 0.1483, 0.1562 and 0.1625, respectively, showing an increasing trend year by year. In terms of land use, during 2002–2020, the average vulnerability indices of forestland and built up land increased by 23.18% and 21.43%, respectively, followed by water body and bare land, increased by 12.18% and 9.52%, respectively, while the changes of cropland and grassland were relatively small, increasing by 5.36% and 5.65%, respectively. (4) During 2002–2020, the landscape pattern vulnerability showed a significant spatial positive correlation in terms of spatial distribution. The Low-Low areas were generally transferred from the southeastern and midwestern to the middle and northern, and the High–High areas were mainly transferred from the middle to the southern. Overall, the degree of the spatial agglomeration of the landscape pattern vulnerability showed an increasing trend.

Abstract Cinnamon and star anise essential oils are extracted from natural plants and provide a theoretical basis for the development and clinical application of compound essential oil pellets. However, cinnamon oil and star anise oil have the characteristics of a pungent taste, extreme volatility, poor palatability, and unstable physical and chemical properties, which limit their clinical use in veterinary medicine. In this study, the inhibitory effects of cinnamon oil and star anise oil on Escherichia coli and Salmonella were measured. Compound essential oil pellets were successfully prepared by centrifugal granulation technology. Subsequently, the in vitro dissolution of the pellets and their pharmacokinetics in pigs were investigated. The results showd that, cinnamon and star anise oils showed synergistic or additive inhibitiory effects on Escherichia coli and Salmonella. The oil pellets had enteric characteristics in vitro and high dissolution in vitro. The pharmacokinetic results showed that the pharmacokinetic parameters Cmax and AUC were directly correlated with the dosage and showed linear pharmacokinetic characteristics, which provided a theoretical basis for the development and clinical application of compound essential oil pellets.

Abstract Background Patients with Turner syndrome (TS) face an increased risk of developing aortic dilatation (AD), but diagnosing AD in children presents greater complexity compared to adults. This study aimed to investigate the application of various assessment indicators of AD in Chinese children and adolescents with TS. Methods This study included TS patients admitted to Shenzhen Children’s Hospital from 2017 to 2022. Cardiovascular lesions were diagnosed by experienced radiologists. Patients without structural heart disease were divided into different body surface area groups, then the Chinese TS population Z-score (CHTSZ-score) of the ascending aorta was calculated and compared with other indicators such as aortic size index (ASI), ratio of the ascending to descending aortic diameter (A/D ratio), and TSZ-score (Quezada’s method). Results A total of 115 TS patients were included, with an average age of 10.0 ± 3.7 years. The incidences of the three most serious cardiovascular complications were 9.6% (AD), 10.4% (coarctation of the aorta, CoA), and 7.0% (bicuspid aortic valve, BAV), respectively. Abstract In the era of the digital economy, the acceleration of life pace has induced to a continuous increase in people’s sense of time scarcity. In order to satisfy consumers’ lifestyle changes and immediate needs, life service enterprises have carried out lots of business model innovation activities guided by value of time. However, it is still unclear what the time-value-oriented business model innovation path is and whether it can improve the perceived value of customers. Under such background, this paper aims to construct a time-value-oriented business model innovation path in life services enterprises and to discuss its relationship with customer perceived value. The study indicates that: Firstly, specific innovation paths of enterprises include putting forward the purpose of value of time proposition, designing standardized process based on time-oriented, constantly forming unique core resources such as big data, brand and supply chain, and updating the transaction method combining online and offline, and so on. Secondly, the questionnaire results indicate that time-value oriented business model innovation in four aspects – value proposition, key processes, core resources, and transaction methods – can effectively enhance customer perceived value. Thirdly, there are differences in the matching degree between time-value-oriented business model innovation and customer value perception among different types of enterprises in the life services industry. Among them, the express delivery industry has the highest enhancing degree and customer satisfaction. This is related to the heterogeneous characteristics of industries such as express delivery, transportation, catering, and retail. Overall, this study offers a comprehensive and practical perspective for enterprises to meet customer perceived value demands by presenting business model innovation paths and solutions.

Point-of-interest (POI) recommendation has attracted great attention in the field of recommender systems over the past decade. Various techniques, such as those based on matrix factorization and deep neural networks, have demonstrated outstanding performance. However, these methods are susceptible to the impact of data sparsity. Data sparsity is a significant characteristic of POI recommendation, where some POIs have limited interaction records and, in extreme cases, become cold-start POIs with no interaction history. To alleviate the influence of data sparsity on model performance, this paper introduced FAGRec, a POI-recommendation model based on the feature-aware graph. The key idea was to construct an interaction graph between POIs and their initial features. This allows the transformation of POI features into a weighted aggregation of initial features. Different POIs can share the learned representations of initial features, thereby mitigating the issue of data sparsity. Furthermore, we proposed attention-based graph neural networks and a user preference estimation method based on delayed time factors for learning representations of POIs and users, contributing to the generation of recommendations. Experimental results on two real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of FAGRec in the task of POI recommendation.

Abstract The use of anticoagulants has become more frequent due to the progressive aging population and increased thromboembolic events. Consequently, the proportion of anticoagulant-associated intracerebral hemorrhage (AAICH) in stroke patients is gradually increasing. Compared with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients without coagulopathy, patients with AAICH may have larger hematomas, worse prognoses, and higher mortality. Given the need for anticoagulant reversal and resumption, the management of AAICH differs from that of conventional medical or surgical treatments for ICH, and it is more specific. Understanding the pharmacology of anticoagulants and identifying agents that can reverse their effects in the early stages are crucial for treating life-threatening AAICH. When patients transition beyond the acute phase and their vital signs stabilize, it is important to consider resuming anticoagulants at the right time to prevent the occurrence of further thromboembolism. However, the timing and strategy for reversing and resuming anticoagulants are still in a dilemma. Herein, we summarize the important clinical studies, reviews, and related guidelines published in the past few years that focus on the reversal and resumption of anticoagulants in AAICH patients to help implement decisive diagnosis and treatment strategies in the clinical setting.

Abstract Background Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, also known as Rosai-Dorfman disease, is a rare, self-limiting disease that predominantly affects children and young adults. Moreover, the disease is characterized by painless bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy in 95% of the patients. However, few reports are available on the Rosai-Dorfman disease of the thymus. Case presentation We report a rare case of thymic Rosai-Dorfman disease detected using computed tomography. During a medical examination, a 50-year-old man underwent a chest computed tomography scan, which revealed an anterior mediastinal single mass with fat in the thymus. A thymectomy was performed to completely remove the tumor using a thoracoscopic technique due to a clinical suspicion of thymoma. Furthermore, Rosai-Dorfman disease was confirmed using histological and immunohistochemical analyses. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the sixth case of thymus-affecting solitary Rosai-Dorfman disease with histological and immunohistochemical evidence. Fat in the thymus, as was present in this case, has never been described in Rosai-Dorfman disease previously. Our results highlight the challenge of diagnosing this uncommon tumor before surgery, and more cases need to be reported to help with the preoperative diagnosis of such a rare tumor.

Abstract Extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling is strongly linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk; however, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, it is found that the injection of chondroitinase ABC (ChABC), mimicking ECM remodeling, into the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) reversed short‐term memory loss and reduced amyloid‐beta (Aβ) deposition in 5xFAD mice. ECM remodeling also reactivated astrocytes, reduced the levels of aggrecan in Aβ plaques, and enhanced astrocyte recruitment to surrounding plaques. Importantly, ECM remodeling enhanced the autophagy‐lysosome pathway in astrocytes, thereby mediating Aβ clearance and alleviating AD pathology. ECM remodeling also promoted Aβ plaque phagocytosis by astrocytes by activating the astrocytic phagocytosis receptor MERTK and promoting astrocytic vesicle circulation. The study identified a cellular mechanism in which ECM remodeling activates the astrocytic autophagy‐lysosomal pathway and alleviates AD pathology. Targeting ECM remodeling may represent a potential therapeutic strategy for AD and serve as a reference for the treatment of this disease.

Pathogenic bacteria's metabolic adaptation for survival and proliferation within hosts is a crucial aspect of bacterial pathogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that citrate, the first intermediate of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, plays a key role as a regulator of gene expression in Staphylococcus aureus. We show that citrate activates the transcriptional regulator CcpE and thus modulates the expression of numerous genes involved in key cellular pathways such as central carbon metabolism, iron uptake and the synthesis and export of virulence factors. Citrate can also suppress the transcriptional regulatory activity of ferric uptake regulator. Moreover, we determined that accumulated intracellular citrate, partly through the activation of CcpE, decreases the pathogenic potential of S. aureus in animal infection models. Therefore, citrate plays a pivotal role in coordinating carbon metabolism, iron homeostasis, and bacterial pathogenicity at the transcriptional level in S. aureus, going beyond its established role as a TCA cycle intermediate.

Based on the initial errors in the whole Pacific that are most likely to affect the predictions of two types of El Niño events, the sensitive area of ocean temperature in the whole Pacific for El Niño prediction starting from January is identified by using the Geophysical Fluid Dynamic Laboratory CM2P1, a fully coupled global climate model. The error growth analysis and the numerical experiments illustrated that, the initial ocean temperature in the Victoria mode (VM) region in the North Pacific will affect the intensity predictions of the CP-El Niño while that in the subsurface layer of the west equatorial Pacific and the surface layer of southeast Pacific will modulate the spatial structure predictions of CP-El Niño. But for EP-El Niño, the former plus the surface layer of the equatorial central eastern pacific will modulate the spatial structure predictions of the event while the latter is shown to be more effective in predictions of the intensity of the event. Furthermore, if targeted observations are conducted in the sensitive area of the whole Pacific, the El Niño prediction skills, including intensity and spatial structure predictions, could be greatly improved for both EP- and CP-El Niño events. Neither the sensitive area of subtropical Pacific nor the tropical Pacific can be precluded as accurate indicators when forecasting particular flavors and the intensity of El Niño events.

This study focuses on developing a water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2) double emulsion system using high-intensity ultrasound (HIU)-treated pea protein isolate (HIU-PPI) and pectin to encapsulate Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum). The effects of ultrasound treatment on pea protein isolate (PPI) characteristics such as solubility, particle size, emulsification, surface hydrophobicity, and surface free sulfhydryl group were examined, determining optimal HIU processing conditions was 400 W for 10 min. The developed W1/O/W2 double emulsion system based on HIU-PPI demonstrated effective encapsulation and protection of L. plantarum, especially at the HIU-PPI concentration of 4 %, achieving an encapsulation efficiency of 52.65 %. Incorporating both HIU-PPI and pectin as emulsifiers increased the particle size and significantly enhanced the emulsion’s viscosity. The highest bacterial encapsulation efficiency of the emulsion, 59.94 %, was attained at a HIU to pectin concentration ratio of 3:1. These emulsions effectively encapsulate and protect L. plantarum, with the concentration of HIU-PPI being a critical factor in enhancing probiotic survival under simulated gastrointestinal digestion. However, the concurrent utilization of pectin and HIU-PPI as emulsifiers did not provide a notable advantage compared to the exclusive use of HIU-PPI in enhancing probiotic viability during in vitro simulated digestion. This research offers valuable perspectives for the food industry on harnessing environmentally friendly, plant-based proteins as emulsifiers in probiotic delivery systems. It underscores the potential of HIU-modified pea protein and pectin in developing functional food products that promote the health benefits of probiotics.

Abstract Electronic structure modulation of active sites is critical important in Fenton catalysis as it offers a promising strategy for boosting H2O2 activation. However, efficient generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) is often limited to the unoptimized coordination environment of active sites. Herein, we report the rational design and synthesis of iron oxyfluoride (FeOF), whose iron sites strongly coordinate with the most electronegative fluorine atoms in a characteristic moiety of F-(Fe(III)O3)-F, for effective H2O2 activation with potent •OH generation. Results demonstrate that the fluorine coordination plays a pivotal role in lowering the local electron density and optimizing the electronic structures of iron sites, thus facilitating the rate-limiting H2O2 adsorption and subsequent peroxyl bond cleavage reactions. Consequently, FeOF exhibits a significant and pH-adaptive •OH yield (~450 µM) with high selectivity, which is 1 ~ 3 orders of magnitude higher than the state-of-the-art iron-based catalysts, leading to excellent degradation activities against various organic pollutants at neutral condition. This work provides fundamental insights into the function of fluorine coordination in boosting Fenton catalysis at atomic level, which may inspire the design of efficient active sites for sustainable environmental remediation.

Abstract Background The paucity of reliable biomarkers for predicting immunotherapy efficacy in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has emerged as a burgeoning concern with the expanding use of immunotherapy. This study endeavors to delve into the potential peripheral biomarkers capable of prognosticating efficacy in HCC patients who are poised to receive anti-PD-1 monotherapy within the phase III clinical trial, KEYNOTE394. Additionally, we sought to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms for resistance to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) and propose innovative combination immunotherapy strategies for future clinical application. Methods Patient blood samples were collected for single-cell RNA sequencing to evaluate the immune cell signature before receiving ICB therapy. Subsequently, in vitro assays and in vivo murine model experiments were conducted to validate the mechanism that S100A9+CD14+ monocytes play a role in ICB resistance. Results Our study demonstrates a notable enrichment of S100A9+CD14+ monocytes in the peripheral blood of patients exhibiting suboptimal responses to anti-PD-1 therapy. Moreover, we identified the Mono_S100A9 signature as a predictive biomarker, indicative of reduced efficacy in immunotherapy and decreased survival benefits across various tumor types. Mechanistically, S100A9 activates PD-L1 transcription by directly binding to the CD274 (PD-L1) gene promoter, thereby suppressing T-cell proliferation and cytotoxicity via the PD-1/PD-L1 axis, consequently diminishing the therapeutic effectiveness of subsequent anti-PD-1 treatments. Furthermore, our in vivo studies revealed that inhibiting S100A9 can synergistically enhance the efficacy of anti-PD-1 drugs in the eradication of hepatocellular carcinoma. Conclusions Our study underscores the significance of S100A9+CD14+ monocytes in predicting inadequate response to ICB treatment and provides insights into the monocyte cell-intrinsic mechanisms of resistance to ICB therapy. We also propose a combined therapeutic approach to enhance ICB efficacy by targeting S100A9.

Narrow gap submerged arc welding (NG-SAW) and narrow gap tungsten inert gas welding (NG-TIG) with multi-layer and multi-pass techniques were used to join the advanced 9Cr and CrMoV steels. The relationship between the impact toughness and microstructure of the dissimilar welded joint fabricated by these two different welding techniques was systematically investigated. By the impact tests, the results indicated that the average impact energy of the specimen welded by NG-TIG (154.0 J) was five times as high as the one (29.2 J) welded by NG-SAW. Interestingly, an amount of fine second phase particles were detected on the basis of the results. In particular, the precipitates in the welded joint by NG-TIG were much smaller than those by NG-SAW attributing to the faster heat input. Generally, NG-TIG was operated at a faster manufacturing speed, which could lead to a faster cooling of the weld pool and therefore refine the microstructure of the weld. However, no significant differences in the metallographic structure of the whole welded joint could be traced even they suffered different welding techniques. The main microstructure of the WM was tempered martensite in both kinds of specimens. Therefore, the fine dispersed phases could account for the much higher impact toughness of the dissimilar joint prepared by NG-TIG than that via NG-SAW.

Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics, diagnostic indicators, and critical factors for the differential diagnosis of rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor (RGNT). Patients and methods This retrospective study included six surgically treated RGNT cases. We analyzed and summarized their clinical manifestations, radiological features, histological morphology, immunophenotype, and molecular genetic changes, supplemented with a literature review. Results The patients comprised four males and two females with a mean age of 35 years. The tumors were located in the cerebellum (two cases); the fourth ventricle, quadrigeminal cistern, and third ventricle (one case each); and the fourth ventricle and brainstem (one case). Clinical manifestations included headaches in four cases, left eyelid ptosis in one case, and one asymptomatic case only identified during physical examination. Microscopically, the tumor cells were uniform in size and were marked by rosette-like or pseudorosette-like structures around the neuropil and blood vessels. Immunohistochemistry revealed biphasic patterns. The central neuropil components of the rosette-like structures around the neuropil and the pseudorosette structures of the perivascular regions expressed Syn, while the cells surrounding the rosettes expressed Olig2 and not GFAP. GFAP and S-100 were expressed in the glial components but not in the rosette or pseudorosette regions. The Ki-67 proliferation index was typically low. Molecular genetic analysis showed that the main molecular changes involved FGFR1 mutation accompanied by PIK3R1 mutation. None of the patients received chemoradiotherapy postoperatively. Follow-up durations varied between 4 and 23 months with no recorded recurrence or metastasis. Conclusion RGNT is a comparatively rare mixed glioneuronal tumor that occurs in the midline structures. Its morphology shows certain overlaps with other low-grade neuroepithelial tumors. Identifying the rosettes around the neuropil is critical for morphological diagnosis, and the molecular identification of FGFR1 mutations accompanied by PIK3R1 mutations can facilitate diagnosis.

Abstract In the process of drilling and blasting construction of large-cross-section tunnels, the layout of wedge-shaped cutting holes has a great influence on the effect of blasting. In this study, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation were used to assess the effect of different forms of cutting hole placement on blasting effectiveness. First, the fissure-inducing angle was proposed, a three-dimensional model of wedge-shaped cutting considering the effect of shear-tensile resistance was established, and theoretical analyses of cutting holes with different cutting angles and fissure-inducing angles were carried out. Second, the parameters of the Riedel–Hiermaier–Thoma model were determined based on the experimental data, and verified. Third, three-dimensional numerical models were established, and analyze the influence of different forms of hole deployment on the blasting effect from the perspective of stress wave propagation and dynamic damage to the surrounding rock. Finally, based on the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results, the wedge-shaped hollowing holes were re-designed, and 20 tunnel blasting tests were carried out using this deployment method for large-section tunnel blasting, which verified the feasibility of this deployment method. The results of the study show that for level III surrounding rock, the angle of wedge-shaped cutting holes should meet 68° ≤ θ ≤ 70° and 70° ≤ β ≤ 72°. This study provides a kind of refined and efficient blasting for the drilling and blasting excavation process of large section tunnels.

Abstract Grayscale structured surfaces with nanometer-scale features are used in a growing number of applications in optics and fluidics. Thermal scanning probe lithography achieves a lateral resolution below 10 nm and a vertical resolution below 1 nm, but its maximum depth in polymers is limited. Here, we present an innovative combination of nanowriting in thermal resist and plasma dry etching with substrate cooling, which achieves up to 10-fold amplification of polymer nanopatterns into SiO2 without proportionally increasing surface roughness. Sinusoidal nanopatterns in SiO2 with 400 nm pitch and 150 nm depth are fabricated free of shape distortion after dry etching. To exemplify the possible applications of the proposed method, grayscale dielectric nanostructures are used for scalable manufacturing through nanoimprint lithography and for strain nanoengineering of 2D materials. Such a method for aspect ratio amplification and smooth grayscale nanopatterning has the potential to find application in the fabrication of photonic and nanoelectronic devices.

Abstract Benefitting from narrow beam divergence, photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers are expected to play an essential role in the ever-growing fields of optical communication and light detection and ranging. Lasers operating with 1.55 μm wavelengths have attracted particular attention due to their minimum fiber loss and high eye-safe threshold. However, high interband absorption significantly decreases their performance at this 1.55 μm wavelength. Therefore, stronger optical feedback is needed to reduce their threshold and thus improve the output power. Toward this goal, photonic-crystal resonators with deep holes and high dielectric contrast are often used. Nevertheless, the relevant techniques for high-contrast photonic crystals inevitably complicate fabrication and reduce the final yield. In this paper, we demonstrate the first continuous-wave operation of 1.55 μm photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers by using a ‘triple-lattice photonic-crystal resonator’, which superimposes three lattice point groups to increase the strength of in-plane optical feedback. Using this geometry, the in-plane 180° coupling can be enhanced threefold compared to the normal single-lattice structure. Detailed theoretical and experimental investigations demonstrate the much lower threshold current density of this structure compared to ‘single-lattice’ and ‘double-lattice’ photonic-crystal resonators, verifying our design principles. Our findings provide a new strategy for photonic crystal laser miniaturization, which is crucial for realizing their use in future high-speed applications.

Abstract China has implemented a series of ecological engineering projects to help achieve the 2060 carbon neutrality target. However, the lack of quantitative research on ecological engineering and the contribution of climate change to terrestrial carbon sinks limits this goal. This study uses robust statistical models combined with multiple terrestrial biosphere models to quantify the impact of China's ecological engineering on terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink trends and their differences according to the difference between reality and nonpractice assumptions. The main conclusions include the following: (1) since 1901, 84% of terrestrial ecosystem carbon sinks in China have shown an increasing trend, and approximately 45% of regional carbon sinks have increased by more than 0.1 g C/m2 every 10 years. (2) Considering the impact of human activities and the implementation of ecological engineering in China, approximately 56% of carbon sinks have improved, and approximately 10% of the regions whose carbon sink growth exceeds 50 g C m−2 yr−1 are mainly in the southeast coastal of China. (3) The carbon sequestration potential and effect of the Sanjiangyuan ecological protection and construction project are better than others, at 1.26 g C m−2 yr−1 and 14.13%, respectively. The Beijing–Tianjin sandstorm source comprehensive control project helps alleviate the reduction in carbon sinks, while the southwest karst rocky desertification comprehensive control project may aggravate the reduction in carbon sinks. This study clarifies the potential of China's different ecological engineering to increase carbon sink potential, and distinguishes and quantifies the contribution of climate and human activity factors to it, which is of great significance to the system management optimization scheme of terrestrial ecosystems and can effectively serve the national carbon neutral strategy. Abstract Background The 18F/19F-isotope exchange method employing P(V)-centered prosthetic groups demonstrates advantages in addressing mild one-step aqueous 18F-labeling of peptides and proteins. However, the molar activity (Am) achieved through isotope exchange remains relatively low, unless employing a high initial activity of [18F]F−. To overcome this drawback, our work introduces a novel approach through a Cu-mediated direct 18F-dehydrofluorination of phosphine oxides. This method leverages the straightforward separation of the 18F-labeled product from the phosphine oxide precursors, aiming to primarily increase Am. Results Through a 19F-dehydrofluorination efficiency test, Cu(OAc)2 was identified as the optimal oxidative metal salt, exhibiting a remarkable 100% conversion within one hour. Leveraging the straightforward separation of phosphine oxide precursors and phosphinic fluoride products, the Am of an activated ester, [18F]4, sees an impressive nearly 15-fold increase compared to the 18F/19F-isotope exchange, with the same initial activity of [18F]F−. Furthermore, this Cu(II)-mediated 18F-dehydrofluorination approach demonstrates tolerance up to 20% solvent water content, which enables the practical radiosynthesis of 18F-labeled water-soluble molecules under non-drying conditions. Conclusions The direct 18F-dehydrofluorination of phosphine oxide prosthetic groups has been successfully accomplished, achieving a high Am via Cu(II)-mediated oxidative addition and reductive elimination.

Fresh walnuts (Juglans regia L.) are challenging to store due to their high water content and delicate green appearance. It has been reported that sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a nitric oxide donor) can promote stress tolerance. However, whether SNP affects the postharvest quality of fresh walnuts remains unknown. This research showed that appropriate SNP treatment contributed to walnut preservation; in particular, 0.5 mmol/L SNP treatment resulted in a better appearance and less decay (59.7%). Compared with the control, this treatment not only increased the levels of proteases related to fresh walnut disease (chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase) but also increased the overall antioxidant level and reduced oxidant damage. Moreover, respiratory metabolism and ethylene release were greatly suppressed (9.5%), and the overall sensory evaluation did not reveal any adverse effects associated with a lower acid or peroxide content. Thus, it was inferred that the optimal SNP dose activated disease-related enzymes, mediated the physiological metabolism rate, regulated the ROS-redox balance and therefore reduced decay and maintained the walnut quality. This is the first report of SNP (NO) application for the preservation of fresh walnuts and may provide information to facilitate practical application of this potential innovation.

In this paper, we numerically investigate the concealing properties of time delay signature (TDS) in the chaotic output of a ring network composed of three mutually coupled semiconductor nano-lasers, comparing the TDS evolution between a ring network with identical coupling delays and a ring network with heterogeneous coupling delays. In simulations, an autocorrelation function is introduced to assess the system’s capability in concealing the TDS. By examining the impacts of system parameters such as coupling strength, frequency detuning, Purcell factor ${F}$ , spontaneous radiation coupling factor $\beta $ , and bias current ${I}$ on the concealment of TDS, we identify the parameter ranges that successfully conceal TDS. The findings indicate that, compared to ring networks featuring identical coupling delays, those with heterogeneous delays can conceal TDS over a broader parameter range. Additionally, ${F}$ moderately and $\beta $ relatively small can expand the region of TDS concealment, while the influence of ${I}$ on TDS is relatively negligible in the ring network with heterogeneous delays.

Abstract To analyze the relationship between macro and meso parameters of the gas hydrate bearing coal (GHBC) and to calibrate the meso-parameters, the numerical tests were conducted to simulate the laboratory triaxial compression tests by PFC3D, with the parallel bond model employed as the particle contact constitutive model. First, twenty simulation tests were conducted to quantify the relationship between the macro–meso parameters. Then, nine orthogonal simulation tests were performed using four meso-mechanical parameters in a three-level to evaluate the sensitivity of the meso-mechanical parameters. Furthermore, the calibration method of the meso-parameters were then proposed. Finally, the contact force chain, the contact force and the contact number were examined to investigate the saturation effect on the meso-mechanical behavior of GHBC. The results show that: (1) The elastic modulus linearly increases with the bonding stiffness ratio and the friction coefficient while exponentially increasing with the normal bonding strength and the bonding radius coefficient. The failure strength increases exponentially with the increase of the friction coefficient, the normal bonding strength and the bonding radius coefficient, and remains constant with the increase of bond stiffness ratio; (2) The friction coefficient and the bond radius coefficient are most sensitive to the elastic modulus and the failure strength; (3) The number of the force chains, the contact force, and the bond strength between particles will increase with the increase of the hydrate saturation, which leads to the larger failure strength.

CD4+ T cells play a critical role in regulating autoimmune diseases, and intestinal microbial metabolites control various immune responses. Granzyme B (GzmB)-producing CD4+ T cells have been recently reported to participate in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. Here, we found that GzmbB-deficient CD4+ T cells induced more severe colitis in Rag1−/− mice than wild-type (WT) CD4+ T cells. Germ-free (GF) mice exhibited a lower expression of GzmB in intestinal CD4+ T cells compared to specific pathogen-free (SPF) mice. Intestinal microbial metabolite butyrate increased GzmB expression in CD4+ T cells, especially in IL-10-producing Th1 cells, through HDAC inhibition and GPR43, but not GPR41 and GPR109a. Butyrate-treated GzmB-deficient CD4+ T cells demonstrated more severe colitis compared to butyrate-treated WT CD4+ T cells in the T cell transfer model. Butyrate altered intestinal microbiota composition, but altered microbiota did not mediate butyrate induction of intestinal CD4+ T cell expression of GzmB in mice. Blimp1 was involved in the butyrate induction of GzmB in IL-10-producing Th1 cells. Glucose metabolism, including glycolysis and pyruvate oxidation, mediated butyrate induction of GzmB in Th1 cells. In addition, we found that IKZF3 and NR2F6 regulated GzmB expression induced by butyrate. Together, our studies underscored the critical role of GzmB in mediating gut bacterial metabolite butyrate regulation of T cell tolerance at the mucosal surface.

AbstractIn recent years, the incidence and mortality rates of lymphoma have gradually increased worldwide. Tumorigenesis and drug resistance are closely related to intracellular inflammatory pathways in lymphoma. Therefore, understanding the biological role of inflammatory pathways and their abnormal activation in relation to the development of lymphoma and their selective modulation may open new avenues for targeted therapy of lymphoma. The biological functions of inflammatory pathways are extensive, and they are central hubs for regulating inflammatory responses, immune responses, and the tumour immune microenvironment. However, limited studies have investigated the role of inflammatory pathways in lymphoma development. This review summarizes the relationship between abnormal activation of common inflammatory pathways and lymphoma development to identify precise and efficient targeted therapeutic options for patients with advanced, drug-resistant lymphoma.

ABSTRACT: Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is one of the most toxic mycotoxins. The use of probiotics is an effective approach to reduce aflatoxins content in foods. To find efficient bacterial species that can eliminate or detoxify AFB1, a bacterial strain S51 capable of degrading AFB1 was isolated from chicken intestine and soil samples by using a culture medium containing coumarin as the sole carbon source. Based on the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, this isolate (strain S51) was identified as Bacillus licheniformis strain QT338. Further characterization of strain S51 showed that it could degrade AFB1 by 61.3% after incubation at 30°C for 72 h. Additional studies demonstrated that S51 promoted good growth performance of the treated chickens, showed no hemolytic activity, carried few drug resistance genes, and exhibited a certain level of tolerance to acid and bile salts. Furthermore, to verify whether strain S51 exerts a protective effect on AFB1-induced liver injury in chickens and to elucidate the underlying mechanism, a chicken toxicity model was induced with AFB1 (100 μg/kg BW) and treated with S51(1×109CFU/mL) for 12 d. The results showed that S51 decreased the level of alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and total bilirubin (P < 0.05); increased glutathione activity and total antioxidant capacityin the liver induced by AFB1, and decreased malondialdehyde production (P < 0.05). S51 also up-regulated the mRNA expression level of the antioxidant proteins HO-1 and Nrf2 and down-regulated the expression of the oxidation-related factor Keap1 in the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway (P

Abstract The rising psychological issues among cancer patients call for timely treatment. Psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, and distress are particularly common among cancer patients and have a significant impact on their treatment and prognostic outcomes. Distraction has been proven to mitigate mental disorders as a strategy of intervention. Digital tools like social short video platforms offer cost‐effective mental healthcare potential, but there is a lack of longitudinal studies demonstrating their intervention effectiveness. This study aimed to assess the impact of social short video platforms on the psychological well‐being of cancer patients, focusing on anxiety, depression, and distress. We studied 455 digestive system cancer patients using mixed methods. The effect on psychological symptoms was evaluated via cross‐sectional analysis of 392 patients and pre‐post intervention analysis of 63 patients, employing the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and Distress Thermometer. The findings showed lower anxiety, depression, and distress scores among regular users of social short video platforms. The intervention led to reduced anxiety and depression scores. As a prevalent app of social short video platforms, these platforms might be a safe and convenient nonpharmacological assisted tool for enhancing mental health care during cancer treatment.

Abstract Despite recent advances in extrusion bioprinting of cell‐laden hydrogels, using naturally derived bioinks to biofabricate complex elastic tissues with both satisfying biological functionalities and superior mechanical properties is hitherto an unmet challenge. Here, we address this challenge with precisely designed biological tough hydrogel bioinks featuring a double‐network structure. The tough hydrogels consisted of energy‐dissipative dynamically crosslinked glycosaminoglycan hyaluronic acid (o‐nitrobenzyl‐grafted hyaluronic acid) and elastin through Schiff's base reaction, and free‐radically polymerized gelatin methacryloyl. The incorporation of elastin further improved the elasticity, stretchability (∼170% strain), and toughness (∼45 kJ m−3) of the hydrogels due to the random coiling structure. We used this novel class of hydrogel bioinks to bioprint several complex elastic tissues with good shape retention. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments also demonstrated that the existence of elastin in the biocompatible bioinks facilitated improved cell behaviors and biological functions of bioprinted tissues, such as cell spreading and phenotype maintenance as well as tissue regeneration. The results confirmed the potential of the elastin‐containing tough hydrogel bioinks for bioprinting of 3D complex elastic tissues with biological functionalities, which may find widespread applications in elastic tissue regeneration.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality on a global scale. Individuals who possess risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure (BP) and obesity, face an elevated risk of experiencing organ-specific pathophysiological changes. This damage includes pathophysiological changes in the heart and peripheral vascular systems, such as ventricular hypertrophy, arterial stiffening, and vascular narrowing and stenosis. Consequently, these damages are associated with an increased risk of developing severe cardiovascular outcomes including stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and coronary heart disease. Among all the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure emerges as the most prominent. However, conventional resting BP measurement methods such as auscultatory or oscillometric methods may fail to identify many individuals with asymptomatic high BP. Recently, exercise BP has emerged as a valuable diagnostic tool for identifying real (high) blood pressure levels and assessing underlying cardiovascular risk, in addition to resting BP measurements in adults. Furthermore, numerous established factors, such as low cardiorespiratory fitness and high body fatness, have been confirmed to contribute to exercise BP and the associated cardiovascular risk. Modifying these factors may help reduce high exercise BP and, consequently, alleviate the burden of cardiovascular disease. A significant body of evidence has demonstrated cardiovascular disease in later life have their origins in early life. Children and adolescents with these cardiovascular risk factors also possess a greater propensity to develop cardiovascular diseases later in life. Nevertheless, the majority of previous studies on the clinical utility of exercise BP have been conducted in middle-to-older aged populations, often with pre-existing clinical conditions. Therefore, there is a need to investigate further of the factors influencing exercise BP in adolescence and its association with cardiovascular risk in early life. Our previously published work showed that exercise BP is a potential useful method to detect adolescents with increased cardiovascular risk. Children and adolescents with cardiovascular risk factors are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases later in life. However, previous studies on the clinical utility of exercise BP have largely focused on middle-to-older aged populations with pre-existing clinical conditions. Therefore, there is a need to investigate further the factors influencing exercise BP in adolescence and its association with future cardiovascular risk. Our previous findings suggest that improving cardio-respiratory fitness and reducing body fatness may help to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and improve overall cardiovascular health. These findings have important implications for the development of effective prevention and early detection strategies, which can contribute to improved public health outcomes.

Abstract Fiber‐reinforced hydrogel composites are widely employed in many engineering applications, such as drug release, and flexible electronics, with more flexible mechanical properties than pure hydrogel materials. Comparing to the hydrogel strengthened by continuous fiber, the meta‐fiber reinforced hydrogel provides stronger individualized design ability of deformation patterns and tunable stiffness, especially for the elaborate applications in joint, cartilage, and organ. In this paper, a novel structure design strategy based on deep learning algorithm is proposed for hydrogel reinforced by meta‐fiber to achieve targeted mechanical properties, such as stress and displacement fields. A solid mechanic model for meta‐fiber reinforced hydrogel is first developed to construct the dataset of fiber distribution and the corresponding mechanical properties of the composite. Generative adversarial network (GAN) is then trained to characterize the relationship between stress or displacement field, and meta‐fiber distribution. The well‐trained GAN is implemented to design meta‐fiber reinforced hydrogel composite structure under specific operation conditions. The results show that the deep learning method may efficiently predict the structure of the hydrogel composite with satisfied confidence, and has great potential for applications in drug delivery and flexible electronics.

Study region: Two typical mountainous Haihe River Basins: The Xiaojue Basin and the Yehe River Basin Study focuses: The mountainous Haihe River Basin has suffered from a water crisis duo to large-scale restoration. Quantifying the hydrological impacts of vegetation restoration is necessary for local water management. In this study, we used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrological model, in combination with two vegetation restoration scenarios, to analyze the effects of vegetation restoration on runoff and its runoff components (surface runoff, baseflow, and total runoff) New hydrological insights for the region: Our results indicated a general decrease in surface runoff and an increase in baseflow as a result of vegetation restoration. At the seasonal timescale, total runoff and surface runoff decreases mainly concentrated in the flood season, and slightly increased in the non-flood season, and baseflow showed the opposite trend during the flood-season in the Xiaojue and Yehe River Basin. The magnitude of change in runoff components in the Yehe River Basin was higher than that in the Xiaojue Basin, and the Yehe River Basin has a larger water yield capability. This study advances our knowledge on the way in which vegetation affects runoff and offers recommendations for water resources management

An improved leaf target detection method based on the YOLOv5s network is proposed to address the issues of low model detection accuracy and slow detection speed in potato leaf image target detection. Firstly, a deformable convolution replaces the standard convolution in YOLOv5s to ensure that the convolution region always covers the target region. Secondly, CBAM attention module is introduced into the convolutional module to enhance local feature extraction and fusion capability of the network, while WIoU_Loss serves as Bounding box loss function SRN-DeblurNet deblurnet is combined with YOLOv5s network to convert part of fuzzy images into clear ones before being integrated with multi-scale features for model prediction. To verify its effectiveness, we trained our model using Pytorch deep learning framework and achieved an accuracy rate of 90.3% and recall rate of 88%, which are respectively 8.6% and 8.9% higher than those obtained by YOLOv5s.

ObjectivesThe association between vitamin D and blood pressure in elderly patients with hypertension complicated by osteoporosis remains unclear. The objective of this study is to explore whether vitamin D deficiency contributes to elevated blood pressure in elderly individuals with both hypertension and osteoporosis.MethodsThis study represents a single-center retrospective observational investigation carried out at the Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Xiamen University. Ambulatory blood pressure, bone density, vitamin D levels, and additional laboratory parameters were collected upon admission. The association between vitamin D and ambulatory blood pressure outcomes was assessed using Spearman correlation tests and partial correlation analyses. The relationship between vitamin D and changes in blood pressure was analyzed through Generalized Additive Models, and threshold analysis was conducted to explore potential thresholds.Results139 patients with newly diagnosed osteoporosis were consecutively included (mean age 73 years, 84.9% female). There is a negative correlation between 25-(OH) D3 and 24 h mean systolic blood pressure (mSBP), diurnal mSBP, nocturnal mSBP, maximum SBP, respectively. The results of the generalized additive model analysis show that there is a nonlinear relationship between 25-(OH) D3 and 24 h mSBP, diurnal mSBP, nocturnal mSBP, respectively. After determining the critical point of 25-(OH) D3 as 42 nmol/L, a segmented linear regression model was used to calculate the effect size and 95% confidence interval on both sides of the critical point. When 25-(OH) D3 is ≤42 nmol/L, it significantly negatively correlates with 24 h, diurnal, and nocturnal mean SBP. Conversely, when 25-(OH) D3 exceeds 42 nmol/L, there is no statistically significant association with 24 h, diurnal, or nocturnal mSBP.ConclusionThere was a significant negative correlation between vitamin D levels and blood pressure levels in elderly patients with hypertension and osteoporosis.

The principle of non-combatant immunity was codified in the Code of International Law and developed into an important foundation for the doctrine of just war, whose origins can be traced to the moral imperative of religious support. The doctrine advocates that persons deemed innocent should be protected from the threat of war, and it is the most widely recognized and deeply rooted moral constraint on the conduct of war. However, the principle of non-combatant immunity has not really deterred the outbreak of war, leaving the international community committed to utopian ideals. In the contemporary context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the principle of non-combatant immunity has been rendered ineffective as civilians are forced to be on the frontlines of both sides of the war. The principle of “just war” seems to have taken on a new basis, with self-defense becoming the pretext for justifying war, and the international community unable to rescue civilians from the flames of war amidst the outcry. There is an urgent need for the international community to re-examine and re-evaluate the immunity of non-combatants, and to limit the use of war as a “legitimate” means of resolving international conflicts. This article calls for a critical assessment of the normativity and effectiveness of the existing law on the principle of non-combatants, and a rethinking of how to construct a more rational and high-level principle to enhance the protection of non-combatants.

Hemostatic materials that allow fast and convenient hemostasis are urgently needed. However, obtaining an ideal hemostatic agent that exhibits biocompatibility, biodegradability, and hemostatic efficacy remains challenging. Recent studies demonstrate that morphological characteristics of hemostatic materials impact their efficacy. This study reports on the importance of morphological modification of traditional Chinese medicine plant polysaccharides. The hemostatic properties of Three-leaf Qing polysaccharides, optimized in particle (SYQ-P) and sponge (SYQ-S) forms, were investigated in vitro and in vivo. SYQ-S and SYQ-P exhibit excellent biodegradability and biocompatibility, thereby improving fibroblast cell proliferation. The hemostatic mechanism involves stable blood clot formation through intrinsic coagulation pathways. In a lethal mouse liver defect bleeding model, blood loss and clotting time were lower with polysaccharides use than with commercial hemostatic drugs. SYQ-S demonstrates instant water-triggered expansion and high absorption capacity, while the sponge-like morphological characteristics effectively improve blood component concentrations. With efficient hemostasis and excellent biocompatibility, SYQ-S dramatically accelerated wound healing in a full-thickness skin defect model in vivo. Thus, SYQ-S effectively promotes the formation of granulation tissue, collagen deposition, and angiogenesis, which ultimately accelerates wound healing. Our work highlights the design of natural Chinese medicine polysaccharides and presents a promising hemostatic agent for widespread clinical application.

Background Regulatory T (Treg) cells are a key component in maintaining the suppressive tumor microenvironment and immune suppression in different types of cancers. A precise understanding of the molecular mechanisms used by Treg cells for immune suppression is critical for the development of effective strategies for cancer immunotherapy.Methods Senescence development and tolerogenic functions of dendritic cells (DCs) induced by breast cancer tumor-derived γδ Treg cells were fully characterized using real-time PCR, flow cytometry, western blot, and functional assays. Loss-of-function strategies with pharmacological inhibitor and/or neutralizing antibody were used to identify the potential molecule(s) and pathway(s) involved in DC senescence and dysfunction induced by Treg cells. Impaired tumor antigen HER2-specific recognition and immune response of senescent DCs induced by γδ Treg cells were explored in vitro and in vivo in humanized mouse models. In addition, the DC-based HER2 tumor vaccine immunotherapy in breast cancer models was performed to explore the enhanced antitumor immunity via prevention of DC senescence through blockages of STAT3 and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) signaling.Results We showed that tumor-derived γδ Treg cells promote the development of senescence in DCs with tolerogenic functions in breast cancer. Senescent DCs induced by γδ Treg cells suppress Th1 and Th17 cell differentiation but promote the development of Treg cells. In addition, we demonstrated that PD-L1 and STAT3 signaling pathways are critical and involved in senescence induction in DCs mediated by tumor-derived γδ Treg cells. Importantly, our complementary in vivo studies further demonstrated that blockages of PD-L1 and/or STAT3 signaling can prevent γδ Treg-induced senescence and reverse tolerogenic functions in DCs, resulting in enhanced HER2 tumor-specific immune responses and immunotherapy efficacy in human breast cancer models.Conclusions These studies not only dissect the suppressive mechanism mediated by tumor-derived γδ Treg cells on DCs in the tumor microenvironment but also provide novel strategies to prevent senescence and dysfunction in DCs and enhance antitumor efficacy mediated by tumor-specific T cells for cancer immunotherapy.

Social memory is the ability to discriminate between familiar and unknown conspecifics. It is an important component of social cognition and is therefore essential for the establishment of social relationships. Although the neural circuit mechanisms underlying social memory encoding have been well investigated, little focus has been placed on the regulatory mechanisms of social memory processing. The dopaminergic system, originating from the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA), is a key modulator of cognitive function. This study aimed to illustrate its role in modulating social memory and explore the possible molecular mechanisms. Here, we show that the activation of VTA dopamine (DA) neurons is required for the formation, but not the retrieval, of social memory. Inhibition of VTA DA neurons before social interaction, but not 24 h after social interaction, significantly impaired social discrimination the following day. In addition, we showed that the activation of VTA DA neurons was regulated by the serine/threonine protein kinase liver kinase B1 (Lkb1). Deletion of Lkb1 in VTA DA neurons reduced the frequency of burst firing of dopaminergic neurons. Furthermore, Lkb1 plays an important role in regulating social behaviors. Both genetic and virus-mediated deletions of Lkb1 in the VTA of adult mice impaired social memory and subsequently attenuated social familiarization. Altogether, our results provide direct evidence linking social memory formation to the activation of VTA DA neurons in mice and illustrate the crucial role of Lkb1 in regulating VTA DA neuron function.

Abstract The elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem (ECDLP) is a popular choice for cryptosystems due to its high level of security. However, with the advent of the extended Shor’s algorithm, there is concern that ECDLP may soon be vulnerable. While the algorithm does offer hope in solving ECDLP, it is still uncertain whether it can pose a real threat in practice. From the perspective of the quantum circuits of the algorithm, this paper analyzes the feasibility of cracking ECDLP using an ion trap quantum computer with improved quantum circuits for the extended Shor’s algorithm. We give precise quantum circuits for extended Shor’s algorithm to calculate discrete logarithms on elliptic curves over prime fields, including modular subtraction, three different modular multiplication, and modular inverse. Additionally, we incorporate and improve upon windowed arithmetic in the circuits to reduce the CNOT-counts. Whereas previous studies mostly focused on minimizing the number of qubits or the depth of the circuit, we focus on minimizing the number of CNOT gates in the circuit, which greatly affects the running time of the algorithm on an ion trap quantum computer. Specifically, we begin by presenting implementations of basic arithmetic operations with the lowest known CNOT-counts, along with improved constructions for modular inverse, point addition, and windowed arithmetic. Next, we precisely estimate that, to execute the extended Shor’s algorithm with the improved circuits to factor an n-bit integer, the CNOT-count required is $$1237n^3/\log n+2n^2+n$$ 1237 n 3 / log n + 2 n 2 + n . Finally, we analyze the running time and feasibility of the extended Shor’s algorithm on an ion trap quantum computer.

Abstract Schizophrenia (SZ) is a complex psychiatric neurodevelopmental disorder with uncertain etiology and pathogenesis. Increasing evidence has recognized the key role of the gut microbiota in SZ. However, few studies have investigated the potential link between oral microbiota and SZ. We studied the tongue coating microbiota and inflammatory profiles of 118 elderly SZ patients and 97 age-matched healthy controls using Illumina MiSeq sequencing and multiplex immunoassays, respectively. Reduced α-diversity, along with a significant difference in β-diversity, were observed in patients with SZ. We have identified SZ-associated oral dysbiosis, characterized by increased Streptococcus and Fusobacterium, as well as decreased Prevotella and Veillonella. These differential genera could potentially serve as biomarkers for SZ, either alone or in combination. Additionally, an elevated Streptococcus/Prevotella ratio could indicate oral dysbiosis. These differential genera formed two distinct clusters: Streptococcus-dominated and Prevotella-dominated, which exhibited different correlations with the altered immunological profiles. Furthermore, we also observed disruptions in the inferred microbiota functions in SZ-associated microbiota, particularly in lipid and amino acid metabolism. Our study provides novel insights into the characteristics of tongue coating microbiota and its associations with immunological disturbances in elderly SZ patients, which offer new targets for the diagnosis and treatment of SZ in the elderly.
