Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of 2 doses of vilaprisan vs. placebo in participants with symptomatic endometriosis. Design: Multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group phase 2b trial (NCT03573336). The initially planned sample size was 315 patients. Recruitment was paused to assess long-term toxicity findings in rodents; although the findings were assessed as likely to be of limited clinical relevance in humans, the study was closed by the sponsor. During the pause, enrolled patients completed 3 or 6 months of treatment per their assigned regimen. Setting: University hospitals, a regional hospital, and a private clinic. Patients: Premenopausal adults with confirmed endometriosis and moderate-to-severe pelvic pain (≥4/10 on a numerical rating scale) were enrolled. Inclusion required protocol adherence, including ≥24 diary entries, and an average pain score of ≥3.5. Intervention: Participants were randomly assigned 1:1:1 to receive vilaprisan (2 mg), vilaprisan (4 mg), or placebo. Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome was a change in the 7-day mean “worst pain” (per the endometriosis symptom diary item 1) from baseline to month 3. All analyses were descriptive only. Results: Eight participants were randomly assigned to treatment before the study pause: 6 received vilaprisan (4 mg, n = 4 and 2 mg, n = 2), and 2 received placebo. The 6 vilaprisan recipients experienced an improvement in endometriosis-associated pelvic pain, whereas the 2 placebo recipients experienced no change or increased pain; all 8 participants had decreased use of pain medication. Bleeding intensity decreased from baseline in the vilaprisan group. Conclusion: The study findings suggest that vilaprisan may improve outcomes in patients with endometriosis. Further studies in larger populations would be needed to accurately assess treatment effects. Clinical Trial Registration Number: NCT03573336

In order to explore the exothermic hazard of coal gangue in the process of spontaneous combustion and its correlation with microscopic groups, the microstructure and exothermic characteristics of four kinds of coal gangue(CG1、CG2、CG3、CG4) were tested by infrared spectrum experiment and differential scanning calorimetry experiment; based on the exothermic heat and activation energy, the spontaneous combustion risk coefficient of coal gangue is established, and the correlation between spontaneous combustion risk coefficient and the microscopic groups is determined. The results show that the four kinds of coal gangue all contain substituted benzene, ‒C=C‒，Ar‒CH，‒CH3，‒CH2‒，Al‒CH，‒OH，‒C‒O‒，‒C=O and inorganic compound groups, but the content of each group is significantly different. The exothermic process of self‒ignition of coal gangue can be divided into three stages: water evaporation, slow exotherm and combustion, but the duration of the three stages is different for different coal gangue. The activation energy of the four kinds of coal gangue in the endothermic stage is CG1>CG3>CG2>CG4, while that of the coal gangue in the exothermic stage is CG3>CG4>CG2>CG1. The spontaneous combustion risk coefficients of the four kinds of coal gangue are in the order of CG1>CG2>CG4>CG3, and the correlation between microscopic groups and benzene is in the order of ‒C‒O‒ > substituted benzene > ‒OH> ‒CH3> ‒C=C‒> inorganic matter > ‒CH2‒ >Ar‒CH> ‒C=O>Al‒CH> ‒COO‒, the correlation of the first three is greater than 0.85. Therefore, coal gangue with higher levels of ‒C‒O‒, substituted benzene and‒OH has a greater risk of spontaneous combustion.

Abstract Objective To compare the outcomes of patients undergoing Retroperitoneal laparoscopic Radical nephrectomy (RLRN) and Transperitoneal laparoscopic Radical nephrectomy (TLRN). Methods A total of 120 patients with localized renal cell carcinoma were randomized into either RLRN or TLRN group. Mainly by comparing the patient perioperative related data, surgical specimen integrity, pathological results and tumor results. Results Each group comprised 60 patients. The two group were equivalent in terms of perioperative and pathological outcomes. The mean integrity score was significantly lower in the RLRN group than TLRN group. With a median follow-up of 36.4 months after the operation, Kaplan–Meier survival analysis showed no significant difference between RLRN and TLRN in overall survival (89.8% vs. 88.5%; P = 0.898), recurrence-free survival (77.9% vs. 87.7%; P = 0.180), and cancer-specific survival (91.4% vs. 98.3%; P = 0.153). In clinical T2 subgroup, the recurrence rate and recurrence-free survival in the RLRN group was significantly worse than that in the TLRN group (43.2% vs. 76.7%, P = 0.046). Univariate and multivariate COX regression analysis showed that RLRN (HR: 3.35; 95%CI: 1.12–10.03; P = 0.030), male (HR: 4.01; 95%CI: 1.07–14.99; P = 0.039) and tumor size (HR: 1.23; 95%CI: 1.01–1.51; P = 0.042) were independent risk factor for recurrence-free survival. Conclusions Our study showed that although RLRN versus TLRN had roughly similar efficacy, TLRN outperformed RLRN in terms of surgical specimen integrity. TLRN was also significantly better than RLRN in controlling tumor recurrence for clinical T2 and above cases. In order to precisely obtain the impact of nutritional elements on lettuce yield and quality, in the present study, a nutrient solution formula suitable for lettuce hydroponic production was development using response surface methodology based on the determination for micro-elements in three growth stages and taking the interaction between elements into account. Then, the formula was optimized and validated, aiming for the goal of improving lettuce yield and quality. The results showed that 200 healthy lettuce leaves contained similar amounts of macro-elements, and there was no significant difference in the unit content of micro-elements among the seedling, rosette, and harvest stages. Quadratic regression models between shoot fresh weight, SPAD value, soluble sugar content, Vc content, and nutrient content were established (R2 = 0.91, 0.95, 0.98, and 0.81, respectively). The optimal concentrations of P, K, Ca, and Mg obtained by multi-objective optimization of the quadratic regression models for fresh weight, SPAD value, soluble sugar content, and Vc content were 2.71 mmol·L−1, 6.42 mmol·L−1, 5.58 mmol·L−1, and 7.11 mmol·L−1, respectively. The nutrient solution formula (T1) was found to be the optimal nutrient solution formula for improving lettuce growth and quality. Overall, we developed a specific and targeted nutrient solution formulation for lettuce; this formulation not only meets lettuce’s demand for nutrients, but also improves lettuce yield and quality, providing more choices for lettuce production in a region with high salts and high pH in the irrigation water.

Abstract Background From January 2020 to December 2022, China implemented “First-level-response”, “Normalized-control” and “Dynamic-COVID-zero” to block the COVID-19 epidemic; however, the immediate and long-term impact of three strategies on other infectious diseases and the difference in their impact is currently unknown. We aim to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) on infectious diseases in China. Methods We collected data on the monthly case count of infectious diseases in China from January 2015 to July 2022. After considering long-term trends using the Cox-Stuart test, we performed the two ratio Z tests to preliminary analyze the impact of three strategies on infectious diseases. Next, we used a multistage interrupted-time-series analysis fitted by the Poisson regression to evaluate and compare the immediate and long-term impact of three strategies on infectious diseases in China. Results Compared to before COVID-19, the incidence of almost all infectious diseases decreased immediately at stages 1, 2, and 3; meanwhile, the slope in the incidence of many infectious diseases also decreased at the three stages. However, the slope in the incidence of all sexually transmitted diseases increased at stage 1, the slope in the incidence of all gastrointestinal infectious diseases increased at stage 2, and the slope in the incidence of some diseases such as pertussis, influenza, and brucellosis increased at stage 3. The immediate and long-term limiting effects of “Normalized-control” on respiratory-transmitted diseases were weaker than “First-level-response” and the long-term limiting effects of “Dynamic-COVID-zero” on pertussis, influenza, and hydatid disease were weaker than “Normalized-control”. Conclusions Three COVID-19 control strategies in China have immediate and long-term limiting effects on many infectious diseases, but there are differences in their limiting effects. Evidence from this study shows that pertussis, influenza, brucellosis, and hydatid disease began to recover at stage 3, and relaxation of NPIs may lead to the resurgence of respiratory-transmitted diseases and vector-borne diseases.

A new method for screening and identification 420 pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS) were developed. The samples were extracted with acetonitrile/acetic acid (99:1, V/V), and clean-up by SinChERS-Nano (single-step, cheap, effective, rugged, safe, nano) column, determined by UPLC-Q-TOF/MS. The accurate mass database and MS/MS database which contains 420 pesticides were established, the automatic retrieval of detection results was carried on according to the accurate mass, retention time, isotope ratio, ion fragment information, and so on. Method verification was performed on leeks samples. The results showed that 420 pesticides had good linearity in the range of 0.1–100 μg/L, and the correlation coeffificients (R2) was greater than 0.990. The limits of detections (LODs) and limits of quantifications (LOQs) of 420 pesticides were in range of 0.05–2.0 and 0.1–5.0 μg/L, respectively. The average spike recoveries at 3 levels were 70.1 % to 119.7 %, and the relative standard deviations (RSD) were lower than 20 % (n = 6). With this method, a survey of pesticide residues was conducted for 110 samples of 10 different fruits and vegetables, which provided scientific data for ensuring pesticide residue safety of the fruits and vegetables consumed daily by the public. This method was simple, sensitive and accurate, and could be used for rapid screening of 420 pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables.

A method for the rapid screening and confirmation of 60 food-borne stimulants in animal-derived foods was developed using the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q/Orbitrap HRMS). After enzymatic hydrolysis at 37°C for 16 h, the samples were extracted with acetonitrile solution. The extraction solution was purified by PRiME HLB pass-through solid-phase extraction cartridge and redissolved by nitrogen blowing. The target compounds of reconstitution fluid were separated by Hypersil GOLD™ VANQUISH column (2.1 mm × 100 mm, 1.9 μm). The raw data were collected for the target compounds in Full Scan-ddMS2 mode, and then the Quan Browser module under Xcalibur software can be used to analyze the quantitative results of the samples. The combination of Tracefinder and mzVault software can realize the qualitative screening and confirmation of the samples. The results showed that the relative deviation of the exact mass of the 60 food-borne stimulants was less than 5.0 × 10−6, which had a good linear relationship in the corresponding concentration, and the correlation coefficient (R2) was greater than 0.9966. The detection limit ranged from 0.05 to 0.5 μg/kg. The quantification limit ranged from 0.1 to 1 μg/kg. The method recoveries ranged from 70.2% to 111.9% with relative standard deviations of 0.05% to 9.00% (n = 6). The method is easy to operate, covers a wide range of targets, and has high efficiency and accuracy. It is suitable for rapid screening and confirmation of various food-derived stimulants in animal-derived foods and provides assistance for food safety in the major events.

BackgroundPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one of the most widely distributed and harmful organic pollutants in the atmosphere. ObjectiveTo investigate the distribution characteristics and composition sources of PAHs in the atmosphere of two districts of Lanzhou from 2019 to 2020 and evaluate the health risks of PAHs via inhalation to different populations. MethodsThe PAHs concentrations in two urban areas (Chengguan District and Xigu District) of Lanzhou City from January 2019 to December 2020 were regularly monitored. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare differences in target pollutant concentrations between the two areas. Diagnostic ratio method and principal component analysis were adopted for source identification. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) model was applied to evaluate the health risks of PAHs. ResultsThe M (P25, P75) PAHs concentrations in Chengguan District and Xigu District were 24.04 (14.59, 41.81) ng·m−3 and 25.97 (18.59, 42.56) ng·m−3, respectively, with no significant difference (Z=−0.970, P>0.05). As to seasonal distribution, most PAHs monomer concentrations in Chengguan District were higher than those in Xigu District in summer, and the concentrations of benzo[a]anthracene and benzo[g,h,i]perylene in Chengguan District were also higher than those in Xigu District in spring and autumn (P0.05). Ring number of PAHs exhibited seasonal fluctuations. In winter and spring, the highest proportions in Chengguan District and Xigu District were both 4-ring PAHs (37.32%-41.73%, 35.20%-39.66%), and in summer and autumn, the highest proportions were both 2- and 3-ring PAHs (39.38%-49.54%, 47.17%-51.23%). The results of diagnostic ratio method revealed mixed atmospheric PAHs sources in the two urban areas, including fossil fuel, coal, and biomass combustion. The results of principal component analysis showed that the cumulative contribution rate of the four principal component factors reached 79.54%. Principal component 1 included phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene; principal component 2 included acenaphthene and dibenzo[a,h]anthracene; principal component 3 was fluorene; principal component 4 was naphthalene. The results of health risk assessment showed that the ILCR values of adult males, adult females, and children in Chengguan District were 2.30×10−6, 2.16×10−6, and 1.73×10−6, respectively; and those in Xigu District were 1.58×10−6, 1.48×10−6, and 1.19×10−6, respectively; all were greater than 10−6. ConclusionPAHs pollution exists in the atmosphere of the two urban areas of Lanzhou City, mainly comes from mixed sources of fossil fuels, coal, and biomass burning, and may pose potential carcinogenic risks to the population.

This paper simulates actual rainfall conditions and raindrops flowing to form a water flow path (WFP) on the pavement surface of the wide expressway. Then, the different linear combination conditions, including longitudinal slope (LS), transverse slope (superelevation, TS), gradual change rate of TS, and pavement width (PW), were simulated and analyzed. The results show that (1) the influence of each linear index on the maximum water film path length (WFPLmax) and maximum water flow depth (WFDmax) differs (according to the absolute values of Beta, LS has the greatest influence on WFPLmax, and PW has the greatest influence on the WFDmax for both straight-line and circular-curve sections); (2) when the design value of LS is between 1.1% and 4%, the WFDmax can be effectively reduced by lowering the value of LS; (3) in the case of a high design value of LS, it can be considered to increase the TS of the pavement arch from 2% to 2.5% to effectively reduce the WFPLmax, and the wider PW, the better the reducing effect; (4) while widening the expressway, adjusting the TS from 2% to 2.5% can effectively offset the increasing effect of PW on the WFDmax. This research aims to fill the research gap in the simulation of runoff characteristics of wide expressway asphalt pavements and to improve the alignment design of expressways from the drainage perspective for the improvement of driving safety.

BackgroundAir pollutants PM2.5 and its adsorbed metal elements are important factors affecting public health.ObjectiveTo explore the distribution characteristics and sources of metal elements in atmospheric PM2.5 in Lanzhou from 2019 to 2020, and to assess the health risks of metal elements to different groups of residents through inhalation.MethodsFrom January 2019 to December 2020 in two districts of Lanzhou City (Chengguan District and Xigu District), regular PM2.5 and metal elements [antimony (Sb), aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), beryllium (Be), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se), and thallium (Tl)] were regularly monitored, and their concentrations were described by the median (M) and 25th and 75th percentiles (P25, P75) as not following a normal distribution (because the detection rates of the five elements Be, Cr, Hg, Ni, and Se were less than 70%, the five elements were not included in subsequent analysis), and then compared with the secondary concentration limits in the Ambient Air Quality Standards (GB 3095-2012). The differences between the medians of the two groups were compared by the Mann-Whitney U rank sum test, and the differences among the medians of multiple groups were compared by the Kruskal-Wallis H rank sum test; the enrichment factor (EF) method and principal component analysis were used to evaluate the pollution degree of the metals and their sources; the health risks of five non-carcinogenic metals (Sb, Al, Pb, Mn, and Tl) and two carcinogenic metals (As and Cd) in PM2.5 were evaluated by hazard index (HI) and hazard quotient (HQ) using the incremental lifetime cancer risk (LCR) model and the non-carcinogenic risk assessment model, respectively.ResultsThe PM2.5 concentrations [M (P25, P75)] in Lanzhou City were 38.50 (26.00, 65.00) and 41.00 (29.00, 63.10) μg·m−3 in 2019 and 2020, respectively, and the difference was not statistically significant (Z=−0.989, P > 0.05). The average levels of the metal elements from high to low were: Al > Pb > Mn > As > Cd > Sb > Tl, and the annual average concentration of each metal element in 2019 was higher than that in 2020 (P0.05). There were seasonal differences in the concentrations of PM2.5 and seven metal elements in Lanzhou City (except PAl=0.007, the other Ps < 0.001). The results of the enrichment factor method showed that the EF values of the six metals (Sb, Al, As, Cd, Pb and Tl) were all greater than 1. Among them, except As, the EF values of other metal elements were all greater than 10, and the EF values of Al and Cd were both greater than 100. The results of principal component analysis showed that the variance contributions of the three principal components were 45.61%, 24.22%, and 14.42%, and the cumulative contribution reached 84.25%. The principal component 1 included Pb, As, Cd, and Sb, the principal component 2 included Al and Mn, and the principal component 3 contained Tl. The non-carcinogenic risks of the five metals were, in descending order, Al > Mn > Pb > Tl > Sb, among which the HQ values of the remaining four metals were less than 1 for adults and children, except the HQ value of Al for adults, which was greater than 1. The ILC values of carcinogenic metal As for adult males, adult females, and children were 2.68×10−5, 2.51×10−5, and 1.45×10−5, respectively; the ILC values of carcinogenic metal Cd for adult males, adult females, and children were 1.53×10−6, 1.43×10−6, and 8.26×10−7, respectively.ConclusionThere is pollution of atmospheric PM2.5 and its adsorbed metal elements in Lanzhou. As and Cd elements may pose potential carcinogenic risks to the residents.

Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. Pekinensis) in the genus Brassica of the family Brassicaceae (Cruciferae) originates from China and is one of the most consumed leafy vegetables in East Asian countries. The leaf color is tightly linked with its growth, development, and yield. By screening an EMS mutagenized population of Chinese cabbage inbred line A03, we identified a yellowgreen leaf mutant ygl. This mutant developed abnormal ultrastructure in chloroplasts. Transcriptome and Gene Ontology (GO) analyses unveiled that abiotic stress response and glucan metabolism pathways were enriched in ygl compared to A03. A Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis reveals that differentially expressed genes were mainly associated with plant hormone signal transduction, photosynthesis, and starch and sucrose metabolism. In ygl, the expression of some photosynthetic pathway genes was significantly up-regulated, while the transcription of key genes related to carbon fixation, starch syntheses, and sugar metabolism pathways, such as RBCS1A, APS1, APL3, and SUS1, was markedly down-regulated. We also found a similar reduction trend in mRNA levels of IAA19, IAA29, and ARR4 associated with auxin and cytokinin pathways. Taken together, we uncovered transcriptional profiles for some important genes that may be responsible for leaf color development, and such gene expression repertoire may be useful for further investigation into the phenotype-to-genotype link in the ygl mutant Chinese cabbage.

Air gap thickness significantly affects the detonation reliability of explosive trains. This paper mainly studies the detonation reliability of explosive trains with a micro-sized air gap. First, the detonation process of the JO-9C mild detonation cord initiating the 1.7 g/cm3 JO-11C booster is simulated by the AUTODYN software, and the critical air gap thickness is obtained between 0.32 and 0.40 mm. Second, a test device for explosive trains with adjustable air gap thickness is designed based on the numerical simulation results, and the adjustable step length of the air gap thickness is 0.0625 mm. Finally, a small sample evaluation method that does not depend on the standard deviation of the sensitivity distribution is proposed, and only 86 test samples are needed to verify the detonation reliability of 0.9999 at 0.1 mm air gap thickness. The test device designed and the small sample evaluation method proposed can be referred to for the detonation reliability evaluation of explosive trains with a micro-sized air gap.

**Background:** Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II; Hunter syndrome; OMIM 309900) is a rare, X-linked, lysosomal storage disease caused by deficient iduronate-2-sulfatase activity. Accumulation of glycosaminoglycans results in multisystemic disease manifestations, which may include central nervous system involvement and cognitive impairment (CI). Patients with MPS II experience a high disease burden, leading to extensive healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and reduced quality of life. **Objectives:** This study aimed to assess the impact of timing of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) initiation and CI status on the clinical characteristics and HRU of patients with MPS II. **Methods:** A retrospective medical chart review of 140 male patients who received a diagnosis of MPS II between 1997 and 2017 was performed at 19 US sites; data on disease manifestations and HRU stratified by age at ERT initiation or CI status were analyzed for the full study population and a subgroup of patients who received a diagnosis of MPS II before the age of 6 years. **Results:** In patients initiating ERT before 3 years of age, there was a trend toward lower symptom burden and HRU compared with patients who initiated ERT at an older age. Evaluation of developmental and behavioral signs and symptoms in the full study population showed that communication delay (70.0% of patients), cognitive delay (62.1%), behavioral problems (52.9%), and toileting delay (50.0%) were particularly common; earliest documented signs and symptoms were motor delay (median [range] age at first documentation: 4.2 [0.9-18.7] years) and behavioral problems (4.4 [0.6-13.7] years). Patients with CI generally experienced greater symptom burden and higher HRU than those without CI, with the most notable differences documented for communication and toileting delays. Abstract Acute exacerbation of chronic obstruction pulmonary disease (AECOPD) as a respiratory disease, is considered to be related to air pollution by more and more studies. However, the evidence on how air pollution affect the incidence of AECOPD and whether there are population differences is still insufficient. Therefore, we select PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3 as representatives combined with daily AECOPD admission data from 1 January 2015 to 26 June 2016 in the rural areas of Qingyang, northwestern China to explore the associations of air pollution with AECOPD. Based on a time‐stratified case‐crossover design, we constructed a distributed lag nonlinear model to qualify the single and cumulative lagged effects of air pollution on AECOPD. Stratified related risks by sex and age were also reported. The cumulative exposure‐response curves were approximately linear for PM2.5, “V”‐shaped for PM10, “U”‐shaped for NO2 and inverted‐“V” for SO2, CO and O3. Exposure to high‐PM2.5 (42 μg/m3), high‐PM10 (91 μg/m3), high‐SO2 (58 μg/m3), low‐NO2 (12 μg/m3), and high‐CO (1.55 mg/m3) increased the risk of AECOPD. Females aged 15–64 were more susceptible under extreme concentrations of PM2.5, SO2, CO, and low‐PM10 than other subgroups. In addition, adults aged 15–64 were more sensitive to extreme concentrations of NO2 compared with the elderly ≥65 years old, while the latter were more sensitive to high‐PM10. High‐SO2, high‐NO2, and extreme concentrations of PM2.5 had the greatest effects on the day of exposure, while low‐SO2 and low‐CO had lagged effects on AECOPD. Precautionary measures should be taken with a focus on vulnerable subgroups, to control hospitalization for AECOPD associated with air pollutants.

Introduction and objectives: The purpose of this study was to confirm whether hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and the levels of liver enzymes would increase the risk of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus (DM) in China. Materials and methods: A total of 10,741 individuals was enrolled in this prospective cohort study. Cox regression analysis was used to calculate the Hazard ratios (HRs) to evaluate the relationships between HBV infection and the risk of DM and prediabetes. Decision trees and dose response analysis were used to explore the effects of liver enzymes levels on DM and prediabetes. Results: In baseline population, HBV infection ratio was 5.31%. In non-adjustment model, the HR of DM in HBV infection group was 1.312 (95% CI, 0.529–3.254). In model adjusted for gender, age and liver cirrhosis, the HR of DM in HBV infection group were 1.188 (95% CI, 0.478–2.951). In model adjusted for gender, age, liver cirrhosis, smoking, drinking, the HR of DM was 1.178 (95% CI, 0.473–2.934). In model further adjusted for education, family income and occupation, the HR of DM was 1.230 (95% CI, 0.493–3.067). Abstract Hierarchical WO3 nanomesh, assembled from single-crystalline WO3 nanowires, is prepared via a hydrothermal method using thiourea (Tu) as the morphology-controlling agent. Formation of the hierarchical architecture comprising of WO3 nanowires takes place via Ostwald ripening mechanism with the growth orientation. The sensor based on WO3 nanomesh has good electrical conductivity and is therefore suitable as NO2 sensing material. The WO3 nanomesh sensor exhibited high response, short response and recovery time, and excellent selectivity towards ppb-level NO2 at low temperature of 160 ℃. The superior gas performance of the sensor was attributed to the high-purity hexagonal WO3 with high specific surface area, which gives rise to enhanced surface adsorption sites for gas adsorption. The electron depletion theory was used for explaining the NO2-sensing mechanism by the gas adsorption/desorption and charge transfer happened on the surface of WO3 nanomesh.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is the major reason for acid rain and respiratory illness in humans. Therefore, rapid, portable, and effective detection of NO2 is essential. Herein, a novel and simple method to construct a ZnO-SnO2 heterojunction is fabricated by pyrolysis of bimetallic metal organic frameworks. The sensitivity of ZnO-SnO2 heterojunction towards 0.2 ppm NO2 under 180 °C is 37, which is 3 times that of pure ZnO and SnO2. The construction of heterojunction speeds up the response-recovery process, and this kind of material exhibits lower detection limit. The construction of heterojunction can significantly improve the NO2 sensitivity. The selectivity, stability, and moisture resistance of ZnO-SnO2 heterojunction are carried out. This could enable the realization of highly selective and sensitive portable detection of NO2.

Quantitative nutrient management has advantages, such as saving resources and improving nutrient utilization, compared with the conventional electrical conductivity management method. The growth and nutrient utilization of vegetables are affected by the integrated environmental conditions such as nutrient supply and light spectrum. This study investigated the effects of applied nutrient quantity (ANQ) (0.5, 1, 2, and 4 times (T) the absorption quantity of nutrients determined in the preliminary experiment, indicated by 0.5T, 1T, 2T, and 4T, respectively) in nutrient solution and red:blue ratio (R:B = 3:7, 7:3, and 9:1, indicated by RB3:7, RB7:3, and RB9:1, respectively) on the growth and nutrient utilization of basil plants in a plant factory with artificial lighting. Results demonstrated that the nutrient use efficiency (NUE) and the nutrient absorption efficiency (NAE) were significantly increased by the ANQ of 0.5T compared with the treatments of 1T, 2T, and 4T, irrespective of R:B ratios. Furthermore, under the ANQ of 0.5T, RB7:3 significantly increased the yield and the absorption of N and K of the basil plant compared with other R:B ratios. Therefore, the ANQ of 0.5T combined with RB7:3 was considered the optimal combination to improve the yield, NUE, and NAE of basil plants in the present study.

Hydroponic cultivation using nutrient solution (NS) is the main cultivation method employed by plant factories with artificial lighting (PFALs). The electrical conductivity (EC) of NSs influences the yield and quality of vegetables. The purpose of this study was to optimize the yield and antioxidant accumulation of basil in a PFAL by EC management. In experiment 1, basil plants were grown under four different ECs (0.5, 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 dS m−1) after transplanting. At 18 days after treatment, the highest levels of shoot fresh and dry weights, leaf fresh and dry weights, and leaf area were observed at an EC of 3.0 dS m−1. However, low-EC treatments (0.5 and 1.0 dS m−1) generated total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant capacities that were higher than those of other EC treatments (3.0 and 5.0 dS m−1). In experiment 2, basil plants were grown at an EC of 3.0 dS m−1 for 13 or 15 days, then treated with water or NS with low ECs (0.5 and 1.0 dS m−1) for 5 or 3 days before harvest. The short-term low-EC treatments, especially, water for 3 days and 0.5 dS m−1 for 5 days, significantly increased the TPC and antioxidant capacity of leaves without significantly decreasing the yields of basil, compared with the control. In conclusion, yield of basil was optimized with an EC of 3.0 dS m−1; however, the TPC and antioxidant capacity of basil were significantly increased by low ECs of 0.5 and 1.0 dS m−1. Short-term low-EC treatments (0.5 dS m−1 for 5 days or water for 3 days) could be used to promote the TPC and antioxidant capacity in leaves without sacrificing yield of basil significantly.

Objective: To examine the natural history of acute alcoholic hepatitis (AH) and identify predictors of mortality for AH using data from a prospective multicenter observational study. Participants and Methods: We analyzed data from 164 patients with AH and 131 heavy-drinking controls with no liver disease. Participants underwent clinical/laboratory assessment at baseline and 6 and 12 months after enrollment. Multivariable analyses were conducted to identify variables associated with mortality and examine the association between coffee drinking and risk of AH. Results: Thirty-six patients with AH died during follow-up, with estimated 30-day, 90-day, 180-day, and 1-year survival of 0.91 (95% CI, 0.87-0.96), 0.85 (95% CI, 0.80-0.91), 0.80 (95% CI, 0.74-0.87), and 0.75 (95% CI, 0.68-0.83), respectively. In the multivariable analysis, higher serum bilirubin level (hazard ratio [HR]=1.059; 95% CI, 1.022-1.089), lower hemoglobin level (HR=1.263; 95% CI, 1.012-1.575), and lower platelet count (HR=1.006; 95% CI, 1.001-1.012) were independently associated with mortality in AH. This study was inspired by the need to estimate pointwise confidence intervals (CIs) for a nonlinear dose-response model from a dose-finding clinical trial. Profile likelihood based CI for a nonlinear dose response model is often recommended. However, it is still not commonly used in dose-finding studies because it cannot generally be calculated explicitly. Most previous research has mainly focused on the performance of the profile likelihood based CI method compared with other common approaches. However, there are still no reports on computing profile likelihood based pointwise CIs for an entire dose-response curve. Based on a previous dose-finding trial with binary-response data, this present study proposed to calculate profile likelihood based pointwise CIs by using the bisection method with proper calculation order for doses in the curve plus crude search when the expected response is close to a boundary. The convergence could be improved by applying appropriate starting values for the optimization procedure with straightforward programming techniques. The algorithm worked well in most cases based on the simulation study and it can be applied more generally to other dose-response models, and other type of data like normally distributed response. It would indeed be great to be able to use profile likelihood approaches more routinely when constructing pointwise CIs for nonlinear dose-response models.

A electrostrictive ceramics were designed by introducing Bi(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3 into 0.875Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-0.125BaTiO3 with tetragonal structure. All the specimens prepared by a conventional solid sintering technique exhibit the excellent sintering ability with a high relative density over 97%. It is found that, as BMT added, the specimens undergo a structure crossover from ferroelectric P4mm to ergodic P4bm, and the coexistence of both tetragonal structures takes bridge between them. A large field-induced strain of 0.30% and field-independent strain coefficient of 0.0254 m4/C2 occur at 4 mol.% BMT added. This material with excellent sinterability is suitable for the application in actuators and microposition controllers.

The antigenic variability of influenza viruses has always made influenza vaccine development challenging. The punctuated nature of antigenic drift of influenza virus suggests that a relatively small number of genetic changes or combinations of genetic changes may drive changes in antigenic phenotype. The present study aimed to identify antigenicity-associated sites in the hemagglutinin protein of A/H1N1 seasonal influenza virus using computational approaches. Random Forest Regression (RFR) and Support Vector Regression based on Recursive Feature Elimination (SVR-RFE) were applied to H1N1 seasonal influenza viruses and used to analyze the associations between amino acid changes in the HA1 polypeptide and antigenic variation based on hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) assay data. Twenty-three and twenty antigenicity-associated sites were identified by RFR and SVR-RFE, respectively, by considering the joint effects of amino acid residues on antigenic drift. Our proposed approaches were further validated with the H3N2 dataset. The prediction models developed in this study can quantitatively predict antigenic differences with high prediction accuracy based only on HA1 sequences. Application of the study results can increase understanding of H1N1 seasonal influenza virus antigenic evolution and accelerate the selection of vaccine strains.

Despite the initial response to the reversible, ATP-competitive quinazoline inhibitors that target ErbB-family, such a subset of cancer patients almost invariably develop resistance. Recent studies have provided compelling evidence that irreversible ErbB inhibitors have the potential to override this resistance. Here, we found that AST1306, a novel anilino-quinazoline compound, inhibited the enzymatic activities of wild-type epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and ErbB2 as well as EGFR resistant mutant in both cell-free and cell-based systems. Importantly, AST1306 functions as an irreversible inhibitor, most likely through covalent interaction with Cys797 and Cys805 in the catalytic domains of EGFR and ErbB2, respectively. Further studies showed that AST1306 inactivated pathways downstream of these receptors and thereby inhibited the proliferation of a panel of cancer cell lines. Although the activities of EGFR and ErbB2 were similarly sensitive to AST1306, ErbB2-overexpressing cell lines consistently exhibited more sensitivity to AST1306 antiproliferative effects. Consistent with this, knockdown of ErbB2, but not EGFR, decreased the sensitivity of SK-OV-3 cells to AST1306. In vivo, AST1306 potently suppressed tumor growth in ErbB2-overexpressing adenocarcinoma xenograft and FVB-2/N(neu) transgenic breast cancer mouse models, but weakly inhibited the growth of EGFR-overexpressing tumor xenografts. Tumor growth inhibition induced by a single dose of AST1306 in the SK-OV-3 xenograft model was accompanied by a rapid (within 2 h) and sustained (≥24 h) inhibition of both EGFR and ErbB2, consistent with an irreversible inhibition mechanism. Taken together, these results establish AST1306 as a selective, irreversible ErbB2 and EGFR inhibitor whose growth-inhibitory effects are more potent in ErbB2-overexpressing cells.

Abstract Background When an individual is ill or symptomatic, they have the options of seeking professional health care, self-treating or doing nothing. In China, some studies suggest that the number of individuals opting to self-treat has been rapidly increasing in recent years. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the trends of and factors related to self-treatment in China. Methods Self-treatment was measured based the concept and data of the China National Health Survey (CNHS), which covers 802,454 individuals. We used CNHS data from 1993, 1998, 2003, and 2008, and a Multinomial Logit Selection Model to estimate the factors influencing the decision to self-treat. Results The prevalences of self-treatment with a recall period of two-weeks were significantly higher in urban compared with rural areas (31.2% vs 14.9% in 1993, 43.5% vs 21.4% in 1998, 47.2% vs 31.4% in 2003, 31.0% vs 25.3% in 2008) in China. Economic (per capita income, TV, sanitary water) and individual (education, profession, family members, exercise) factors, as well as accessibility to drugs had a positive association with the probability of self-treating. Different illness symptoms, severity, and duration show a negative association with the probability of self-treating, showing a degree of rationality in decision-making. Different insurance systems were also found to have an effect on self-treatment decision-making. Conclusions Self-treatment and professional medical services have shared the incremental medical needs of residents in recent years in China. Self-perceived illness status, economic circumstances, and education play important roles in health care decision-making.

The catalytic subunit telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) is a prerequisite for malignant transformation of human cells. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignant tumor. The genetic association of hTERT gene rs2853669 and rs2736098 polymorphisms with CRC was surveyed in the Chinese population. Two hundreds patients with CRC and 200 healthy controls were taken for blood sample collection. Sanger sequencing was applied for genotyping. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed, and odds ratio (OR) together with confidence interval (CI) were calculated to obtain the corresponding association power. Among CRC cases (49.50%), hTERT gene rs2736098 GA genotype carriers were more prevalent compared with the control group (41.00%, P = 0.035), which increased the risk of CRC by 1.576 times (95% CI, 1.031-2.409). Distribution of the rs2736098 genotypes was significantly associated with TNM stage, tumor differentiation, tumor size and lymph node metastasis (P < 0.05). The frequencies of hTERT gene rs2853669 polymorphism were not significantly different between CRC patients and healthy controls. Logistic regression analysis indicated that both body mass index (BMI) and hTERT gene rs2736098 polymorphism remained significantly correlated with CRC susceptibility. The frequencies of hTERT gene rs2853669 polymorphism did not differ significantly between CRC patients and control group (P > 0.05). The hTERT gene rs2736098 polymorphism was correlated with CRC risk in the Chinese Han population, and the GA genotype was a risk element for the onset of CRC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
