Abstract

The ocean is the main heat reservoir in Earth’s climate system, absorbing most of the top-of-the-atmosphere excess radiation. As the climate warms, anomalously warm and fresh ocean waters in the densest layers formed near Antarctica spread northward through the abyssal ocean, while successions of warming and cooling events are seen in the deep-ocean layers formed near Greenland. The abyssal warming and freshening expands the ocean volume and raises sea level. While temperature and salinity characteristics and large-scale circulation of upper 2000 m ocean waters are well monitored, the present ocean observing network is limited by sparse sampling of the deep ocean below 2000 m. Recently developed autonomous robotic platforms, Deep Argo floats, collect profiles from the surface to the seafloor. These instruments supplement satellite, Core Argo float, and ship-based observations to measure heat and freshwater content in the full ocean volume and close the sea level budget. Here, the value of Deep Argo and planned strategy to implement the global array are described. Additional objectives of Deep Argo may include dissolved oxygen measurements, and testing of ocean mixing and optical scattering sensors. The development of an emerging ocean bathymetry dataset using Deep Argo measurements is also described.

Abstract

The international array of profiling floats known as Argo is a major component of the global ocean- and climate-observing system. In 2010, the NAOS (Novel Argo Observing System) project was selected as part of France’s Equipex “Investissement d’Avenir” program. The objectives of NAOS were to consolidate the French contribution to the Argo core mission (global temperature and salinity measurements down to 2,000 m) as well as to develop the future generation of French Argo profiling floats and prepare the next phase of the Argo program with an extension to the deep ocean (Deep-Argo), biogeochemistry (BGC-Argo) and polar seas. This paper summarizes the main technological advances and at-sea validations carried out as part of NAOS: development of a deep (4,000 m) float, a new BGC float for Research & Development (R&D) applications, and a BGC float for deployments in Arctic areas, assessment of a new density and Absolute Salinity optical sensor, improvement of the reliability of the standard Argo float, and upgraded satellite-transmission performance. French profiling floats developed in this way are now operational and among the most deployed worldwide, and the density sensor is the most promising of its kind for profiling floats applications.

Abstract

In the past two decades, the Argo Program has collected, processed, and distributed over two million vertical profiles of temperature and salinity from the upper two kilometers of the global ocean. A similar number of subsurface velocity observations near 1,000 dbar have also been collected. This paper recounts the history of the global Argo Program, from its aspiration arising out of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, to the development and implementation of its instrumentation and telecommunication systems, and the various technical problems encountered. We describe the Argo data system and its quality control procedures, and the gradual changes in the vertical resolution and spatial coverage of Argo data from 1999 to 2019. The accuracies of the float data have been assessed by comparison with high-quality shipboard measurements, and are concluded to be 0.002°C for temperature, 2.4 dbar for pressure, and 0.01 PSS-78 for salinity, after delayed-mode adjustments. Finally, the challenges faced by the vision of an expanding Argo Program beyond 2020 are discussed.

Abstract

Plant viral diseases constitute a major contributor to agricultural production losses, significantly impacting the economies of exporting countries by more than USD 30 billion annually. Understanding and researching the biology and genomics of viruses is crucial for developing virus-resistant genetically edited or genetically modified plants. Genetic modifications can be targeted to specific regions within genes of target plants which are important or essential for the virus to establish a systemic infection, thus fostering resistance or enabling plants to effectively respond to invading agents while preserving their yield. This review provides an overview of viral incidence and diversity in tropical fruit crops and aims to examine the current state of the knowledge on recent research efforts aimed at reducing or eliminating the damage caused by viral diseases, with emphasis on genetically edited products that have reached the market in recent years. Abstract

This paper examines how signers make lists. One way is to use the fingers on the signer's nondominant hand to enumerate items on a list. The signer points to these list-fingers with the dominant hand. Previous analyses considered lists to be nondominant, one-handed signs, and thus were called list buoys because the nondominant hand often remains in place during the production of the list. The pointing hand was largely ignored as a nonlinguistic gesture. We take a constructional approach based on Cognitive Grammar. In our approach, we analyze lists as a type of pointing construction consisting of two meaningful components: a pointing device (the pointing hand) used to direct attention; and a Place, also consisting of form and a meaning. Using data from Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Finland–Swedish Sign Language (FinSSL), we examine the semantic role of each component, showing how the nondominant list-fingers identify and track discourse referents, and how the pointing hand is used to create higher-order entities by grouping list-fingers. Abstract

The mining industry in Peru - as well as in many resource-rich countries of the global South - is of great economic and social importance, particularly in remote regions where mineral deposits are often located. The academic literature has so far neglected analysing how women in these regions are affected by the industry. As such, it is relevant to study the gendered conflict surrounding the activity and invisibility of women in the mining industry, as well as their proposals, demands, and needs, with a focus on environmental and social concerns. This study analysed the experiences of peasant women from Peruvian Andes communities in environmental governance processes in mining contexts as they sought to exercise their citizenship within the mining industry and public spaces. Using a qualitative approach involving a focus group and panel discussions, the experiences and perceptions of the women who are part of the participatory environmental monitoring and surveillance committees (PEMSC) were considered. This paper highlights gendered inequalities concerning the benefits of mining, the process of change in the social dynamics of mining communities, and political claims for a better social arrangement, with social, political, economic, and ecological considerations from the women’s point of view. Resumo A indústria de mineração no Peru - assim como em muitos países ricos em recursos do Sul global - é de grande importância econômica e social, particularmente em regiões remotas onde frequentemente estão localizados depósitos minerais. Até agora, a literatura acadêmica negligenciou a análise de como as mulheres nessas regiões são afetadas pela indústria. Assim, é relevante estudar o conflito de gênero em torno da atividade e invisibilidade das mulheres na mineração, bem como suas propostas, demandas e necessidades, com foco nas preocupações ambientais e sociais. Este estudo analisou as experiências de mulheres camponesas de comunidades andinas peruanas em processos de governança ambiental em contextos de mineração enquanto buscavam exercer sua cidadania dentro da indústria de mineração e espaços públicos. A partir de uma abordagem qualitativa envolvendo um grupo focal e painéis de discussão, foram consideradas as experiências e percepções das mulheres que integram os comitês participativos de monitoramento e vigilância ambiental (PEMSC). Este artigo destaca as desigualdades de gênero em relação aos benefícios da mineração, o processo de mudança na dinâmica social das comunidades mineradoras e as reivindicações políticas por um melhor arranjo social, com considerações sociais, políticas, econômicas e ecológicas do ponto de vista das mulheres.

49. On the coast of caiçara handicrafts Paraná, Brazil: the new normal post pandemic Covid-19

Abstract

Handicrafts have historically always been practiced in Paraná Coast, Brazil, being a source of income for dozens of families, however this scenario has undergone profound changes with the pandemic of the New Coronavirus (COVID-19), but no studies were found that could reveal the changes caused among artisans as a result of the pandemic. Thus, descriptive exploratory research was carried out with 35 artisans residing on the Coast of Paraná. Women were the majority among the investigated group (65.7%) with an average age of 54 years old. The study revealed that in the perception of the interviewees it is possible to notice the recovery of the impacts caused by the pandemic on the family budget, with the increase in the income obtained from the sale of handicrafts, however in the opinion of the majority of the interviewees (68.57%) the recovery could have been accelerated if there were public policies for easy access to artisans. The study revealed that in Paraná Coast, after the pandemic of the New Coronavirus, there was a reduction in jobs and regional income, and it consequently affected family income and that, in the face of so many deaths, the class of widowed, black or brown women emerged in the investigated sample. The lives of these women are marked by precariousness and they feel more strongly the impacts of segregation due to the need to provide for all family needs by themselves.

50. Test de validación de estímulos para elicitación de intensidad en Lengua de Señas Brasileña (Libras)

Abstract

Xavier (2014) carried out an experimental study on the expression of intensity in Libras, using pairs of visual stimuli to elicit 32 signs in their baseline and intensified forms. This research sought to perceptively validate the stimuli used by Xavier (2014) from a test carried out with the deaf in the city of Curitiba. In this validation test, 26 pairs of related images were presented in random order. Deaf judges from Curitiba evaluated whether the first image is more / as much / less intense than the second. After evaluating the first stimulus as more intense than the second, they then graded its intensity on a Likert scale (0-5). The results of this validation test showed that 17 of the 26 stimuli presented a significant difference in degree and therefore are considered appropriate for the elicitation of intensified forms in Libras. Our results also showed that the judges considered 9 stimuli with little evident difference in degree. Consequently, when replicating a study of this nature, these visual stimuli must be replaced., Xavier (2014) realizou um estudo experimental sobre a expressão da intensidade em Libras, utilizando pares de estímulos visuais para eliciar 32 sinais em suas formas basal e intensificada. Esta pesquisa buscou validar perceptivamente os estímulos a partir de um teste realizado com surdos na cidade de Curitiba. Neste teste de validação, 26 pares de imagens utilizadas por Xavier (2014) foram apresentados em ordem aleatória. Juízes surdos de Curitiba avaliaram se a primeira imagem é mais/tanto/menos intensa que a segunda. Depois de avaliar o primeiro estímulo como mais intenso que o segundo, eles então graduaram sua intensidade em uma escala de 0 a 5. Os resultados desse teste de validação mostraram que 17 dos 26 pares de estímulos apresentaram diferença significativa de grau e, portanto, são considerados adequados para a eliciação de formas intensificadas em Libras. Nossos resultados também mostraram que os juízes consideraram 9 estímulos com pouca diferença evidente de grau. Después de marcar que el primer estímulo es más intenso que el segundo, graduaron su intensidad en una escala de 0 a 5. Los resultados de este test de validación mostraron que 17 de los 26 estímulos presentaron una diferencia de grado importante y, por lo tanto, se consideran apropiados para la elicitación de formas intensificadas en Libras. Nuestros resultados mostraron también que los participantes consideraron 9 estímulos con una diferencia de grado poco evidente. Consecuentemente, a la hora de replicar un estudio de esa naturaleza dichos estímulos visuales deben ser sustituidos.
