International audience; Recent developments in French and international laws concerning the return of cultural property from formerly colonized territories are particularly rich. Most States with large collections of non-European objects are now faced with claims from the countries from which these objects were transferred. France, after having long maintained a legal stance based on strict respect of the principle of inalienability of public collections, has recently changed its position statement. In 2017, in Ouagadougou, the President Emmanuel Macron said he was in favour of returning African heritage to Africa. Three years later, on 24 December 2020, the Parliament adopted a law that partially fulfilled the President’s wish, by identifying 27 objects for return to Benin and Senegal. As this article will explain, the law’s passage was fraught, and opinions continue to diverge on a case-by-case (or object-by-object) approach to return versus a generic statute. There are also questions about what drives the idea of return – from legal responsibility, to moral duty in view of French history, to contemporary politics and diplomacy.

We investigate the Chukchi and the Beaufort seas in the Arctic Ocean, where salty and warm Pacific Water flows in through the Bering Strait and interacts with the sea ice, contributing to its summer melt. Thanks to in situ measurements recorded by two saildrones deployed during summer 2019 and to refined sea ice filtering in satellite L-Band radiometric data, we demonstrate the ability of satellite sea surface salinity (SSS) observed by SMOS and SMAP to capture SSS freshening induced by sea ice melt. We refer to these freshening events as meltwater lenses (MWL). The largest MWL observed by the saildrones during this period occupied a large part of the Chukchi shelf, with a SSS freshening reaching -5 practical salinity scale, persisting for up to one month. This MWL restricted the transfer of air-sea momentum to the upper ocean, as illustrated by measured wind speed and vertical profiles of currents. With satellite-based sea surface temperature, satellite SSS provides a monitoring of the different water masses encountered in the region during summer 2019. Using sea ice concentration and estimated Ekman transport, we analyse the spatial variability of sea surface properties after the sea ice edge retreat over the Chukchi and the Beaufort seas. The two MWL captured by the saildrones and the satellite measurements resulted from different dynamics. Over the Beaufort Sea, the MWL evolution followed the meridional sea ice retreat whereas, in the Chukchi Sea, a large persisting MWL was generated by advection and subsequent melting of a sea ice filament. Salinity is a main driver of ocean circulation as it determines (with seawater temperature) the seawater density. However, very little is known about salinity variations there, due to the paucity of measurements near ice and in river plumes where surface water is freshest. Here, we use surface salinity measurements from two autonomous vehicles, named saildrones, to show that satellite measurements can identify the evolution of freshwater lenses that result from sea ice melt. Over the Chukchi and the Beaufort seas, sea surface salinity exhibits large seasonal changes, partly because of the sea ice melting. In this region, water from the North Pacific Ocean enters the Arctic Ocean, resulting in large gradients of salinity and temperature. During summer 2019, the saildrones measured the surface salinity and temperature variability as the sea ice retreated northwards. By comparing these data with the measurements from satellites, we showed that satellites can detect these pools of fresh surface water in the Arctic Ocean, increasing the field of application of satellites to understand changes in conditions that determine the Arctic's role in climate change.

The European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI+) for Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) aims at generating global SSS fields from all available satellite L-band radiometer measurements over the longest possible period with a great stability (including Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity, SMOS). Version 1 and 2 of CCI+SSS level 4 fields combine SSS form the three satellite L-Band radiometer missions and have been found to be in a very good agreement with in situ measurements (global rms difference of 0,16 pss). Nevertheless, some systematic differences still remain between CCI+SSS and in situ SSS. We study here to which extent some errors coming from the SMOS SSS processing are reduced, when making some key changes in the SMOS level 2 OS processing. Then, we discuss the contribution of each change in the preliminary results we obtain.

Sea surface salinity is retrieved for more than 11 years from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite mission. This data set provides a unique monitoring of the Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) spatio-temporal variability at global scale. It is particularly useful to follow the surface ocean pathway of fresh river plumes water as illustrated here in the Bay of Bengal. A revised adjustment of the whole SMOS SSS time series (CATDS Expertise Center version 5, 2010–2020) leads to clear reduction of local biases in very variable regions and in very noisy regions. The robust std difference between SMOS CEC v5 (18-day, ~70km SSS) and Argo in situ SSS is 0.17 in regions warmer than 5°C. We will discuss how future CATDS products will be improved in view of two ongoing reprocessings, the CATDS L1/L2 v7 reprocessing and the ESA CCI+SSS L2 SMOS reprocessing.

This study is performed in the frame of the European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI+) for Sea Surface Salinity (SSS), which aims at generating global SSS fields from all available satellite L-band radiometer measurements over the longest possible period with a great stability. By combining SSS from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity, SMOS, Aquarius and the Soil Moisture Active Passive, SMAP missions, CCI+SSS fields (Boutin et al. 2020) are the only one to provide a 10 year time series of satellite salinity with such quality: global rms difference of weekly 25x25km2 CCI+SSS with respect to in situ Argo SSS of 0.17 pss, correlation coefficient of 0.97 (see https://pimep.ifremer.fr/diffusion/analyses/mdb-database/GO/cci-l4-esa-merged-oi-v2.31-7dr/argo/report/pimep-mdb-report_GO_cci-l4-esa-merged-oi-v2.31-7dr_argo_20201215.pdf). Nevertheless, we found that some systematic biases remained. In this presentation, we will show how they will be reduced in the next CCI+SSS version.The key satellite mission ensuring the longest time period, since 2010, at global scale, is SMOS. We implemented a re-processing of the whole SMOS dataset by changing some key points. Firstly we replace the Klein and Swift (1977) dielectric constant parametrization by the new Boutin et al. (2020) one. Secondly we change the reference dataset used to perform a vicarious calibration over the south east Pacific Ocean (the so-called Ocean Target Transformation), by using Argo interpolated fields (ISAS, Gaillard et al. 2016) contemporaneous to the satellite measurements instead of the World Ocean Atlas climatology. And thirdly the auxiliary data (wind, SST, atmospheric parameters) used as priors in the retrieval scheme, which come in the original SMOS processing from the ECMWF forecast model were replaced by ERA5 reanalysis.Our results are showing a quantitative improvement in the stability of the SMOS CCI+SSS with respect to in situ measurements for all the period as well as a decrease of the spread of the difference between SMOS and in situ salinity measurements.Bibliography:J. Temperature and Salinity at the ocean interface can be substantially different than their bulk values in the ocean mixed layer at 5-10 meters depth. The main phenomena that account for these differences are (i) the interfacial millimeter scale diffusive microlayer usually cooler and saltier than below due to surface fluxes and (ii) diurnal warm layers of few tens of centimeters to few meters that form under weak wind condition due to solar absorption. Although characterized by small vertical scales, these tightly wind-related phenomena corresponds to coherent structures up to the large-scale where they can impact air-sea exchanges of heat, water and chemical species. Another phenomenon that can impact global air-sea exchanges is the freshwater lenses produced by rain. Rain freshens and cools the ocean surface, as raindrops temperature is usually lower than surface temperature. The induced negative salinity anomaly enables surface cold anomalies to be sustained and further cooled down by surface fluxes after rain has ceased. This study presents a first global estimate of basic statistics rain-induced ocean surface freshening and temperature changes and of their variations with seasons.

In coupled general circulation model, the accuracy of momentum and energy exchange at the air-sea interface is still a potential source of significant bias. In the framework of the COCOA project we investigate new methods (both mathematical and numerical) to have a more correct flux representation. One important source of error is the asynchronous coupling between oceanic and atmospheric model. Indeed, the time step of the coupling is generally longer than time steps used by either the atmospheric or the oceanic model. This introduces inconsistencies between the free evolution of the two models due to the exchange parameters that are held constant since the last coupling time step. In particular, non-synchronous exchange coefficients may lead to error in the diurnal evolution of the coupled system, or to bias in the ocean mixed layer temperature for period where surface fluxes increases or decrease linearly. In order to evaluate the potential amplitude of this error, and its regional and sea- sonal distribution, we use the hourly fluxes that are available in the new ECMWF ERA5 re-analyses. The error due to asynchronous coupling is first evaluated by inspecting the flux difference between two successive time-steps. Results show more important differences over the western boundary currents and the circumpolar current for all the fluxes except for the solar flux. We also observe larger differences in summer compared to winter in the respective hemisphere. By taking in account the geometrical variation of the solar flux we show how we can reduce the error for the solar flux. In a second time we are calculating the statistics for the linear increase and decrease of the flux for a fixed period (ig one day, two days...) over all the ocean for all the fluxes except the solar one. The results are showing coefficients that are decreasing as the period increase. We also use those coefficient in a simple mixed layer model to calculate the error made over the period of calcul. On the contrary we see the appearance of a plateau at two-three days on the impact of this linear bias. Finally, using the De Boyer de Montaigu climatology for the mixed layer height we show that the linear bias could lead to temperature change up to 0.1K.

Background It has been suggested that age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are commonly associated. Objective The Alzheimer Disease, Presbycusis and Hearing Aids (ADPHA) clinical trial assessed the influence of hearing aids (HAs) on patients affected by ARHL and AD, as judged by behavioral symptoms and functional abilities, as well as patient and caregiver quality of life (QoL). Methods A multicenter double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial, with a semi-crossover procedure over 12 months, was conducted from 2006 to 2012. For the first 6 months, the active group was treated with active HAs and the placebo group with inactive HAs. For the last 6 months, HAs in the placebo group were activated. Assessment was conducted at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. We performed intergroup and intragroup comparisons. Behavioral symptoms were assessed by neuropsychiatric inventory (NPI), functional abilities by instrumental activities of daily living, and QoL by Zarit, Alzheimer's disease related quality of life, and simplified Duke scales. Results Fifty-one patients were included and randomized: 22 in active group (mean NPI 17.6; mean age 83±6.2) and 26 in placebo group (mean NPI 25.8; mean age 82.3±7.2) were fitted with HAs. At 6-month follow-up, all scores worsened without significant difference between the two groups. In placebo group, activation of HAs had no effect on the change of these scores. Conclusion These findings do not provide evidence of improvement in behavioral symptoms, functional status, or QoL of hearing impaired AD patients and their caregivers after 6 months of HA use. However, we cannot exclude that HAs may have a positive effect in patients aged less than 75 years.

Although the effects of traffic-related air pollution on respiratory exacerbations have been well documented, its impact on lung function in childhood remains unclear.Our aim was to investigate the associations of prenatal, early, and lifetime traffic-related air pollution exposure with lung function at 8-9 years studying possible effect modification by sex, sensitization at 8-9 years, and early lower respiratory tract infections.We conducted this study among 788 children from the PARIS (Pollution and Asthma Risk: an Infant Study) birth cohort. Lung function tests were performed during the medical examination at 8-9 years. Traffic-related air pollution exposure during each trimester of pregnancy was estimated using nitrogen oxides background measurements. Postnatal traffic-related air pollution exposure was assessed by a nitrogen oxides air dispersion model at both residential and daycare/school addresses. Associations between lung function and traffic-related air pollution exposure were analyzed by multiple linear regression models.Higher prenatal nitrogen oxides levels, especially during the second trimester of pregnancy, were associated with a lower forced expiratory flow at 25-75% of the forced vital capacity, but there were no significant associations between prenatal nitrogen oxide levels and forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume during 1 second, or the forced expiratory volume during 1 second/forced vital capacity ratio overall. Postnatal traffic-related air pollution exposure was associated with lower lung function among children with early lower respiratory tract infections or sensitization at 8-9 years, but not in the full cohort. In children with early repeated lower respiratory tract infections, an interquartile increase in lifetime nitrogen oxides exposure was associated with both a lower forced expiratory volume during 1 second (-62.6 ml; 95% confidence interval = -107.0 to -18.1) and forced vital capacity (-55.7 ml; 95% confidence interval = -109.5 to -1.8), but was not associated with the forced expiratory volume during 1 second/forced vital capacity ratio. There was an association between greater early postnatal nitrogen oxide exposure and a lower forced expiratory volume during 1 second/forced vital capacity ratio among sensitized children (-0.65%; 95% confidence interval = -1.25 to -0.05).This study sheds new light, suggesting associations between postnatal traffic-related air pollution exposure and reduced lung function may be enhanced by early, repeated lower respiratory tract infections or allergic sensitization.

Before a building programme located rue Abbé de l’Épée in Bordeaux, an emergency excavation was led in 2016-2017, to identify an activity since the Roman period to modern period. The nature of the activity of this site varied over time. The archaeological remains show a continuous but evolutionary activity in this margin district and so, enlighten the history of the urban factory of Bordeaux. Besides, the south zone of the excavation revealed burials of the late Antiquity corresponding to an unexplored sector of Saint-Seurin’s antique necropolis. If a part of the graves becomes integrated perfectly into the continuity of the already known vestiges, the intervention shows the presence of an original group of multiple graves. According to the observations made during the excavation, it is already possible to confirm the hypothesis of a crisis of mortality in connection with an epidemic rather than an act of war., Préalablement à un programme immobilier situé rue Abbé de l’Épée à Bordeaux, une fouille préventive a été menée en 2016-2017, identifiant une occupation allant de l’époque tardo-antique à l’époque moderne. La nature de l’occupation de ce site a varié au fil du temps. Les vestiges identifiés témoignent d’une occupation continue, mais évolutive dans ce quartier de marge et éclairent ainsi l’histoire de la fabrique urbaine de Bordeaux. En outre, la zone sud de la fouille a révélé des inhumations de l’Antiquité tardive correspondant à un secteur jusqu’alors inexploré de la nécropole de Saint-Seurin. Si une partie des sépultures découvertes s’intègre parfaitement dans la continuité des vestiges déjà connus, l’intervention permet de révéler la présence d’un ensemble tout à fait original de sépultures multiples. The statistical features of turbulent flows depend on the locality properties of energy transfers among scales. The latter, in turn, may have consequences for the relative dispersion of passive particles. We consider a class of two-dimensional flows of geophysical interest, namely \(\alpha \)-turbulence models, possessing different locality properties. We numerically study relative dispersion in such flows using both fixed-time and fixed-scale indicators. The results are compared with predictions based on phenomenological arguments to explore the relation between the locality of the turbulent cascade and that of relative dispersion. We find that dispersion behaviors agree with expectations from local theories, for small enough values of the parameter \(\alpha \) (dynamics close to surface quasi geostrophy) and for sufficiently small initial pair separations. The statistical properties of turbulent fluids depend on how local the energy transfers among scales are, i.e. whether the energy transfer at some given scale is due to the eddies at that particular scale, or to eddies at larger (non-local) scale. This locality in the energy transfers may have consequences for the relative dispersion of passive particles. In this paper, we consider a class of generalized two-dimensional flows (produced by the so-called $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$-turbulence models), theoretically possessing different properties in terms of locality of energy transfers. It encompasses the standard barotropic quasi-geostrophic (QG) and the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) models as limiting cases. The relative dispersion statistics are examined, both as a function of time and as a function of scale, and compared to predictions based on phenomenological arguments assuming the locality of the cascade. We find that the dispersion statistics follow the predicted values from local theories, as long as the parameter $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ is small enough (dynamics close to that of the SQG model), for sufficiently small initial pair separations. In contrast, non-local dispersion is observed for the QG model, a robust result when looking at relative displacement probability distributions. However, we point out that spectral energy transfers do have a non-local contribution for models with different values of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$, including the SQG case. This indicates that locality/non-locality of the turbulent cascade may not always imply locality/non-locality in the relative dispersion of particles and that the self-similar nature of the turbulent cascade is more appropriate for determining the relative dispersion locality.

Background/objective This study evaluated the cognitive benefit of hearing aids (HA) in older patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and hearing loss (HL) after a 6- and 12-month period of utilization. Methods A multicenter double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial was conducted in patients aged more than 65 years. A group was equipped with active HA for 6 months (active group) and a second group had placebo HA for 6 months (placebo group) followed by a secondary activation phase for a further 6 months (semi crossover procedure). Both groups were retested after a 12-month period. The primary endpoint was the change from baseline of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive subscale (ADAS Cog) after a 6-month period in both groups and after 6 months of secondary HA activation in the placebo group. A smaller cognitive decline should be obtained with HA use; an increase in ADAS Cog score of less than 6 points was defined a success. Results Fifty-one patients aged 68 to 99 years were included; 38 attended the 6-month visit: 18 in the active group and 20 in the placebo group. At 6 months, 14 (82.4%) successes were noticed in the active group, and 15 (88.2%) in the placebo group (p = 1.0); delta ADAS Cog in the active group was 1.8±5.3 and 1.3±5.3 in the placebo group (p = 0.8). In the placebo group, after the secondary HA activation, no significant improvement was observed. Conclusion No significant effect of HA use was observed after 6 months of follow-up in patients with AD and HL.

Objective To measure noise levels generated by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. Intervention Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Main outcome measures rTMS noise levels measured in equivalent continuous sound level (LAeq) and in peak level (LC, peak), as a function of maximum power output of the equipment. Methods rTMS noise levels were measured for an active and a corresponding sham coil, as a function of distance and percentage power output of a MagPro X100 system (Medtronic) and compared with occupational noise exposure standards, using parameters classically used for rTMS tinnitus treatment. Results Significant differences in frequency composition and intensity levels were observed between sham and active coil noises. The active coil noise reached, at 50% power, 96 LAeq (peak at 132 LC, peak), varying by 3.9 LAeq (3.9 LC, peak) per 10% of power increase, whereas the sham coil reached 87 LAeq (114 LC, peak), varying by 3.2 LAeq (3.6 LC, peak) per 10% of power increase. Conclusion rTMS noise levels differ significantly between active and sham coils, and can go beyond the American and European legal occupational noise limits, hence making ear protection a specific issue, particularly relevant to rTMS treatment for tinnitus.

Background The guidelines for use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) advise frequent updating of rTMS safety guidelines and recommendations. Although rTMS can produce sound of more than 120 dB C, which is sufficient to induce hearing loss, the effect of rTMS noise on the hearing of both patients and rTMS practitioners is understudied. Objective This study investigated the effects of rTMS noise on subjects’ hearing using otoacoustic emissions evoked by clicks (transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions, TEOAEs), which is an objective and sensitive method of cochlear exploration. Methods Hearing thresholds and TEOAEs were recorded in 24 normal-hearing healthy subjects before and after a real or sham rTMS session (a single 20-minute session applied to the superior temporal gyrus with 1200 pulses at 100% of the individual motor threshold). Results No significant difference in hearing thresholds was observed between subjects exposed to real or sham rTMS. However, the difference in TEOAE amplitude between pre- and post-rTMS sessions increased significantly with rTMS noise for those subjects the least protected by earplugs, showing a post-rTMS slight decrease of TEOAE amplitude for high rTMS intensities and hence minor hearing function alteration. However, this correlation was no longer found 1 hour after the rTMS session. Conclusions These findings suggest that, even when rTMS is used within normal safety limits and with good hearing protection, rTMS noise can transiently disturb hearing mechanisms in normal-hearing healthy subjects. This transient effect of rTMS on hearing may be an important consideration for Institutional Review Boards when rTMS is used at higher stimulation intensities.

Language processing from the cochlea to auditory association cortices shows side-dependent specificities with an apparent left hemispheric dominance. The aim of this article was to propose to nonspeech specialists a didactic review of two complementary theories about hemispheric asymmetry in speech processing. Starting from anatomico-physiological and clinical observations of auditory asymmetry and interhemispheric connections, this review then exposes behavioral (dichotic listening paradigm) as well as functional (functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography) experiments that assessed hemispheric specialization for speech processing. Even though speech at an early phonological level is regarded as being processed bilaterally, a left-hemispheric dominance exists for higher-level processing. This asymmetry may arise from a segregation of the speech signal, broken apart within nonprimary auditory areas in two distinct temporal integration windows--a fast one on the left and a slower one on the right--modeled through the asymmetric sampling in time theory or a spectro-temporal trade-off, with a higher temporal resolution in the left hemisphere and a higher spectral resolution in the right hemisphere, modeled through the spectral/temporal resolution trade-off theory. Both theories deal with the concept that lower-order tuning principles for acoustic signal might drive higher-order organization for speech processing. However, the precise nature, mechanisms, and origin of speech processing asymmetry are still being debated. Finally, an example of hemispheric asymmetry alteration, which has direct clinical implications, is given through the case of auditory aging that mixes peripheral disorder and modifications of central processing.

For each follow-up, MET and conventional hearingaid were optimized according to the patient’s hearing loss.Results: Mean functional gains were 29 dB for conventionalhearing aid and 35 dB the first day of the study with the METand 39 dB after 6 months.Discussion: The performance of the MET and the absence ofocclusion of the external auditory canal could explain the im-proved benefit. For maximum gain, the MET requires a reg-ular follow-up during the first 6 months.Conclusion: MET seems to be a suitable and successful treat-ment option resulting in significant improvement in speechcomprehension, especially after 6 months, in patients with severesensorineuralhearingloss.Duringthe24-monthfollow-upofthisstudy, the METhas been a safe and effective treatment for severehearing loss. We study the Hamiltonian system of two point vortices, embedded in external strain and rotation. This external deformation field mimics the influence of neighboring vortices or currents in complex flows. When the external field is stationary, the equilibria of the two vortices, symmetric with respect to the center of the plane, are determined. The stability analysis indicates that two saddle points lie at the crossing of separatrices, which bound streamfunction lobes having neutral centers. When the external field varies periodically with time, resonance becomes possible between the forcing and the oscillation of vortices around the neutral centers. A multiple time-scale expansion provides the slow-time evolution equation for these vortices, which, for weak periodic deformation, oscillate within their original (steady) trajectory. These analytical results accurately compare with numerical integration of the complete equations of motion. As the periodic deformation field increases, this vortex oscillation migrates out of the original trajectories, towards the location of the separatrices. With a periodic external field, these separatrices have given way to heteroclinic trajectories with multiple self-intersections, as shown by the calculation of the Melnikov function. Chaos appears in vortex trajectories as they enter the aperiodic domain around the heteroclinic curves. In fact, this chaotic domain progressively fills out the plane, replacing KAM tori and cantori, as the periodic deformation field reaches finite amplitude. The appearance of windows of periodicity is illustrated.

This study compared the influence of musical and psychoacoustical training on auditory pitch discrimination abilities. In a first experiment, pitch discrimination thresholds for pure and complex tones were measured in 30 classical musicians and 30 non-musicians, none of whom had prior psychoacoustical training. The non-musicians’ mean thresholds were more than six times larger than those of the classical musicians initially, and still about four times larger after 2 h of training using an adaptive two-interval forced-choice procedure; this difference is two to three times larger than suggested by previous studies. The musicians’ thresholds were close to those measured in earlier psychoacoustical studies using highly trained listeners, and showed little improvement with training; this suggests that classical musical training can lead to optimal or nearly optimal pitch discrimination performance. A second experiment was performed to determine how much additional training was required for the non-musicians to obtain thresholds as low as those of the classical musicians from experiment 1. Eight new non-musicians with no prior training practiced the frequency discrimination task for a total of 14 h. It took between 4 and 8 h of training for their thresholds to become as small as those measured in the classical musicians from experiment 1. These findings supplement and qualify earlier data in the literature regarding the respective influence of musical and psychoacoustical training on pitch discrimination performance.

Benzodiazepines (Bzd) are known to interact with GABAergic inhibitory neurotransmission. Previous research on their effect on human auditory efferent pathways--through evoked otoacoustic emissions suppression by contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS)--indicated a decrease in medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system inhibitory activity, after oral intake of oxazepam--representative of the Bzd drug class. To date, this pharmacological effect was only assessed in the right ear. Since a leftward asymmetry of Bzd receptors localization in human auditory cortex has been described recently, we explored in this study the hypothesis of an asymmetrical action of Bzd on MOC efferent functioning. The results revealed a significant difference of Bzd effect probing the right ear versus the left ear, with CAS-induced suppression being less effective in the right than left ear after oxazepam intake. This finding raises the question of possible neurochemical left-right asymmetry in the descending auditory pathways. The potential localization of this asymmetry is discussed.

Active cochlear micromechanisms, involved in auditory sensitivity, are modulated by the medial olivocochlear efferent system, which projects directly onto the organ of Corti. Both processes can be assessed non-invasively by means of evoked otoacoustic emissions. Animal experiments have revealed top-down control from the auditory cortex to peripheral auditory receptor, supported by anatomical descriptions of descending auditory pathways from auditory areas to the medial olivocochlear efferent system and organ of Corti. Through recording of evoked otoacoustic emissions during presurgical functional brain mapping for refractory epilepsy, we showed that corticofugal modulation of peripheral auditory activity also exists in humans. In 10 epileptic patients, electrical stimulation of the contralateral auditory cortex led to a significant decrease in evoked otoacoustic emission amplitude, whereas no change occurred under stimulation of non-auditory contralateral areas. These findings provide evidence of a cortico-olivocochlear pathway, originating in the auditory cortex and modulating contralateral active cochlear micromechanisms via the medial olivocochlear efferent system, in humans.

International audience; We investigate the stability of a steplike Rankine vortex in a one-active-layer, reduced gravity, quasi-geostrophic model. After calculating the linear stability with a normal mode analysis, the singular modes are determined as a function of the vortex shape to investigate short-time stability. Finally we determine the position of the critical layer and show its influence when it lies inside the vortex.

The synthesis of heterotelechelic polystyrene chains containing α-hydroxy-ω-carboxy end groups and their intramolecular cyclization are described. The controlled free radical polymerization of styrene was carried out using 4,4‘-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) as the initiator and 4-hydroxy-TEMPO as the terminator, to generate difunctional macromolecules with molar masses in the range 1−10 kg mol-1. The cyclization reaction is clearly evidenced by infrared spectrometry and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). In addition, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography at the exclusion−adsorption transition point (LC PEAT) analyses were successfully applied. The yield of low molar mass (1 kg mol-1) macrocycles was close to 95%. For higher molar masses, polycondensate byproducts and nonfunctionalized chains due to styrene thermal initiation reduce the cyclization efficiency.

The auditory sensory end organ is under the control of the central nervous system via efferent projections. Contralateral suppression of otoacoustic emissions (acoustic signatures of the cochlear biomechanical activity) provides a non-invasive approach to assess olivocochlear efferent activity in humans. Using this approach, the present study compared professional musicians with musically-inexperienced subjects. The results revealed stronger bilateral cochlear suppression, suggesting larger efferent influences in both ears, in musicians. Furthermore, in indicating no difference in left/right asymmetry of efferent-mediated suppression between the two groups, the present findings suggest that the observed differences in olivocochlear activity reflect bilaterally-enhanced activity of the cortical auditory structures in musicians rather than differences in cerebral hemispheric asymmetry between the two groups.

The outer hair cells of the organ of Corti are the target of abundant efferent projections from the olivocochlear system. This peripheral efferent auditory subsystem is currently thought to be modulated by central activity via corticofugal descending auditory system, and to modulate active cochlear micromechanics. Although the function of this efferent subsystem remains unclear, physiological, psychophysical, and modeling data suggest that it may be involved in ear protection against noise damage and auditory perception, especially in the presence of background noise. Moreover, there is mounting evidence that its activity is modulated by auditory and visual attention. A commonly used approach to measure olivocochlear activity noninvasively in humans relies on the suppression of otoacoustic emissions by contralateral noise. Previous studies have found substantial interindividual variability in this effect, and statistical differences have been observed between professional musicians and non-musicians, with stronger bilateral suppression effects in the former. In this paper, we review these studies and discuss various possible interpretations for these findings, including experience-dependent neuroplasticity. We ask whether differences in olivocochlear function between musicians and non-musicians reflect differences in peripheral auditory function or in more central factors, such as top-down attentional modulation.

International audience; PURPOSE: Subjective tinnitus is considered a phantom auditory phenomenon. Recent studies show that electrical or magnetic stimulation of the cortex can alleviate some tinnitus. The usual target of the stimulation is the primary auditory cortex (PAC) on Heschl's gyrus (HG). The objective of this study was to specify the anatomy of HG by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: Cerebral MRI of 60 patients with chronic tinnitus, carried out before neuronavigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation targeting the auditory cortex, were included. 3D-T1 MRI was reformatted in Talairach-Tournoux's stereotactic space, then the following steps were performed: morphometry of HG, localization of the probabilistic center of the PAC (pcPAC) chosen at the junction between the medial third and the lateral two-thirds of HG, relative to external and cortical landmarks, and identification of its coordinates relative to the bicommissural line (AC-PC). RESULTS: In relation to external landmarks, the pcPAC was identified around 5 cm above the root of the helix of the ear in the direction of a point on the vertex located 4 cm behind the coronal suture, for both sides. In Talairach-Tournoux's stereotactic space with the anterior commissure as the origin, the pcPAC coordinates were x = 43, y = -20, z = 6.8 on the right side, and x = -42.5, y = -21.5, and z = 6.5 on the left. Probabilistic maps of the presence of HG pointed to a relative contraction of data in space, despite inter- and intraindividual differences. CONCLUSION: The choice of our stimulation target was established in the middle of the theoretical position of the PAC. MRI allows a reliable identification of the target structure.

Language processing from the cochlea to auditory association cortices shows side-dependent specificities with an apparent left hemispheric dominance. The aim of this article was to propose to nonspeech specialists a didactic review of two complementary theories about hemispheric asymmetry in speech processing. Starting from anatomico-physiological and clinical observations of auditory asymmetry and interhemispheric connections, this review then exposes behavioral (dichotic listening paradigm) as well as functional (functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography) experiments that assessed hemispheric specialization for speech processing. Even though speech at an early phonological level is regarded as being processed bilaterally, a left-hemispheric dominance exists for higher-level processing. This asymmetry may arise from a segregation of the speech signal, broken apart within nonprimary auditory areas in two distinct temporal integration windows--a fast one on the left and a slower one on the right--modeled through the asymmetric sampling in time theory or a spectro-temporal trade-off, with a higher temporal resolution in the left hemisphere and a higher spectral resolution in the right hemisphere, modeled through the spectral/temporal resolution trade-off theory. Both theories deal with the concept that lower-order tuning principles for acoustic signal might drive higher-order organization for speech processing. However, the precise nature, mechanisms, and origin of speech processing asymmetry are still being debated. Finally, an example of hemispheric asymmetry alteration, which has direct clinical implications, is given through the case of auditory aging that mixes peripheral disorder and modifications of central processing.

International audience; In a two-dimensional incompressible fluid, we study the interaction of two like-signed Rankine vortices embedded in a steady shear/strain flow. The numerical results of vortex evolutions are compared with the analytical results for point vortices. We show the existence of vortex equilibria, and of merger for initial distances larger than those without external flow. The evolutions depend on the initial orientation of the vortices in the external flow.

International audience; The interaction between two co-rotating vortices, embedded in a steady external strain field, is studied in a coupled Quasi-Geostrophic — Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (hereafter referred to as QG-SQG) model. One vortex is an anomaly of surface density, and the other is an anomaly of internal potential vorticity. The equilibria of singular point vortices and their stability are presented first. The number and form of the equilibria are determined as a function of two parameters: the external strain rate and the vertical separation between the vortices. A curve is determined analytically which separates the domain of existence of one saddle-point, and that of one neutral point and two saddle-points. Then, a Contour-Advective Semi-Lagrangian (hereafter referred to as CASL) numerical model of the coupled QG-SQG equations is used to simulate the time-evolution of a sphere of uniform potential vorticity, with radius R at depth −2H interacting with a disk of uniform density anomaly, with radius R, at the surface. In the absence of external strain, distant vortices co-rotate, while closer vortices align vertically, either completely or partially (depending on their initial distance). With strain, a fourth regime appears in which vortices are strongly elongated and drift away from their common center, irreversibly. An analysis of the vertical tilt and of the horizontal deformation of the internal vortex in the regimes of partial or complete alignment is used to quantify the three-dimensional deformation of the internal vortex in time. A similar analysis is performed to understand the deformation of the surface vortex.

International audience; In a quasi-geostrophic model, we study the baroclinic instability of a two-layer vortex. The singular unstable modes for potential vorticity anomalies are compared with the classical normal modes. Short-time singular modes are explosively unstable and, at short times, depend only on the baroclinic component of the flow. As time progresses, they evolve towards the normal modes and their sensitivity to flow parameters is explored. Asymptotic solutions are provided.

International audience; In a two-layer quasi-geostrophic model, a baroclinic vortex is submitted to a periodic forcing of its mean baroclinic azimuthal velocity. It is shown that parametric effects could stabilize a vortex which is baroclinically unstable in the absence of forcing. Conversely, parametric resonance can destabilize a baroclinically stable vortex, under conditions on the vortex parameters, on the ratio of layer thicknesses or on the forcing frequency.
