Abstract

The PICOSEC-Micromegas (PICOSEC-MM) detector is a novel gaseous detector designed for precise timing resolution in experimental measurements. It eliminates time jitter from charged particles in ionization gaps by using extreme UV Cherenkov light emitted in a crystal, detected by a Micromegas photodetector with an appropriate photocathode. The first single-channel prototype tested in 150 GeV/c muon beams achieved a timing resolution below 25 ps, a significant improvement compared to standard Micropattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGDs). This work explores the specifications for applying these detectors in monitored neutrino beams for the ENUBET Project. Key aspects include exploring resistive technologies, resilient photocathodes, and scalable electronics. New 7-pad resistive detectors are designed to handle the particle flux. In this paper, two potential scenarios are briefly considered: tagging electromagnetic showers with a timing resolution below 30 ps in an electromagnetic calorimeter as well as individual particles (mainly muons) with about 20 ps respectively.

Abstract

The PICOSEC Micromegas detector is a~precise-timing gaseous detector based on a~Cherenkov radiator coupled with a~semi-transparent photocathode and a~Micromegas amplifying structure, targeting a~time resolution of tens of picoseconds for minimum ionising particles. Initial single-pad prototypes have demonstrated a~time resolution below 25 ps, prompting ongoing developments to adapt the concept for High Energy Physics applications, where sub-nanosecond precision is essential for event separation, improved track reconstruction and particle identification. The achieved performance is being transferred to robust multi-channel detector modules suitable for large-area detection systems requiring excellent timing precision. To enhance the robustness and stability of the PICOSEC Micromegas detector, research on robust carbon-based photocathodes, including Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) and Boron Carbide (B4C), is pursued. Results from prototypes equipped with DLC and B4C photocathodes exhibited a~time resolution of approximately 32 ps and 34.5 ps, respectively. Efforts dedicated to improve detector robustness and stability enhance the feasibility of the PICOSEC Micromegas concept for large experiments, ensuring sustained performance while maintaining excellent timing precision.

Abstract

The PICOSEC Micromegas (MM) detector is a precise timing gaseous detector based on a MM detector operating in a two-stage amplification mode and a Cherenkov radiator. Prototypes equipped with cesium iodide (CsI) photocathodes have shown promising time resolutions as precise as 24 picoseconds (ps) for Minimum Ionizing Particles. However, due to the high hygroscopicity and susceptibility to ion bombardment of the CsI photocathodes, alternative photocathode materials are needed to improve the robustness of PICOSEC MM. Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) film have been introduced as a novel robust photocathode material, which have shown promising results. A batch of DLC photocathodes with different thicknesses were produced and evaluated using ultraviolet light. The quantum efficiency measurements indicate that the optimized thickness of the DLC photocathode is approximately 3 nm. Furthermore, DLC photocathodes show good resistance to ion bombardment in aging test compared to the CsI photocathode. Finally, a PICOSEC MM prototype equipped with DLC photocathodes was tested in muon beams. A time resolution of around 42 ps with a detection efficiency of 97% for 150 GeV/c muons were obtained. These results indicate the great potential of DLC as a photocathode for the PICOSEC MM detector.

Abstract

This paper presents design guidelines and experimental verification of a single-channel PICOSEC Micromegas (MM) detector with an improved time resolution. The design encompasses the detector board, vessel, auxiliary mechanical parts, and electrical connectivity for high voltage (HV) and signals, focusing on improving stability, reducing noise, and ensuring signal integrity to optimize timing performance. A notable feature is the simple and fast reassembly procedure, facilitating quick replacement of detector internal components that allows for an efficient measurement strategy involving different detector components. The paper also examines the influence of parasitics on the output signal integrity. To validate the design, a prototype assembly and three interchangeable detector boards with varying readout pad diameters were manufactured. The detectors were initially tested in the laboratory environment. Finally, the timing performance of detectors with different pad sizes was verified using a Minimum Ionizing Particle (MIP) beam test. Notably, a record time resolution for a PICOSEC Micromegas detector technology with a CsI photocathode of 12.5$\pm$0.8 ps was achieved with a 10 mm diameter readout pad size detector.

5. Analysis and Validation of a Diagnostic Nomogram for Predicting the Risk of Acute Respiratory Failure for Non-HIV Related Pneumocystis Jirovecii Pneumonia Patients

In this article, we explore the risk factors of ARF and propose a prognostic model of ARF for PCP patients.Methods: In this multi-center, retrospective study in 6 secondary or tertiary academic hospitals in China, 120 PCP patients were screened from the Dryad database for the development of a predictive model. A total of 49 patients from Peking University People’s Hospital were collected for external validation. Crucial clinical features of these patients are selected applying univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. We established an intuitive nomogram. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve (CIC) were plotted to evaluate the model’s performance.Results: A cohort of 120 patients formed the training cohort for the development of the model, with 49 patients constituting the test cohort. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis identified five risk factors associated with ARF, which are age, fever, dyspnea, high neutrophil count and use of antibiotics. A nomogram was then proposed based on these factors. The area under the ROC curve (AUROC) in the development group has reached 0.8576, while the validation group has an AUROC of 0.7372, indicating commendable ability for predicting ARF. In addition, results for Hosmer-Lemeshow test indicate the effectiveness of our model. Furthermore, DCA and CIC curves demonstrate excellent clinical benefit.Conclusion: We present a nomogram for predicting ARF in non-HIV related PCP patients. The patients were treated with a routine nursing intervention (control group) or routine plus continuous nursing interventions (observation group). The disease uncertainty, coping strategies, sleep and quality of life before and after the interventions were compared between the two groups.Results: After 6 months of the intervention, the disease uncertainty score of the observation group was significantly lower than that of the control group (p < 0.05). Medical coping style score: There was no significant difference in the three dimensions of medical coping style between the two groups before the intervention (p > 0.05). After 6 months of the intervention, the facial score of the observation group was significantly higher, and the avoidance and yield scores were significantly lower compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Sleep quality and quality of life score: There was no significant difference in the sleep quality score between the two groups before the intervention (p > 0.05). After 6 months of the intervention, the observation group’s sleep quality and quality of life scores were significantly higher compared with the control group (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Compared with routine nursing, continuous nursing can reduce the disease uncertainty of patients with IBD, help them to adopt an active coping style, as well as improve their sleep quality and quality of life to relieve physical and mental pain and better restore health.Keywords: continuing care, inflammatory bowel disease, quality of life, sleep quality, coping style

We aim to study the prognostic implications and histological reflections of no detection of ctPS in RCC.Patients and Methods: A total of 210 RCC patients who had MDCT examination and received nephrectomy in our institution were included in the analysis. Absence or presence of ctPS was recognized, and its associations with overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), pathological PS (pPS) and vasculature were studied.Results: A total of 172 (81.9%) patients were recognized to have a ctPS and 38 (18.1%) had no detection of it. They had comparable histology, stage, grade, and necrosis. Patients without a ctPS had significantly shortened overall survival (OS, p = 0.001) and progression-free survival (PFS, p < 0.001), the significance of which persisted in multivariable analysis (OS, HR 3.104, p = 0.003; PFS, HR 3.313, p = 0.001). Nearly all tumors (34/38, 89.4%) without a ctPS actually had a pPS being detected and incompleteness of pPS was also irrelevant (p = 0.739). Compared with ctPS presence, those without a ctPS had significantly thinned pPS (0.36 vs 0.43 mm, p = 0.005). In clear-cell histology, those without a ctPS also contained increased vascular density and cross-sectional area of vessels with long diameter ≥ 200 um in the pPS layer (p = 0.005 and 0.011) and increased vascular density in the 500 um layer outside pPS (p = 0.017).Conclusion: Absence of ctPS on MDCT significantly increases the risk of adverse clinical outcome in RCC. 11. Cross-and-Diagonal Networks: An Indirect Self-Attention Mechanism for Image Classification.

Abstract

In recent years, computer vision has witnessed remarkable advancements in image classification, specifically in the domains of fully convolutional neural networks (FCNs) and self-attention mechanisms. Nevertheless, both approaches exhibit certain limitations. FCNs tend to prioritize local information, potentially overlooking crucial global contexts, whereas self-attention mechanisms are computationally intensive despite their adaptability. In order to surmount these challenges, this paper proposes cross-and-diagonal networks (CDNet), innovative network architecture that adeptly captures global information in images while preserving local details in a more computationally efficient manner. CDNet achieves this by establishing long-range relationships between pixels within an image, enabling the indirect acquisition of contextual information. This inventive indirect self-attention mechanism significantly enhances the network's capacity. In CDNet, a new attention mechanism named "cross and diagonal attention" is proposed. This mechanism adopts an indirect approach by integrating two distinct components, cross attention and diagonal attention. By computing attention in different directions, specifically vertical and diagonal, CDNet effectively establishes remote dependencies among pixels, resulting in improved performance in image classification tasks. Experimental results highlight several advantages of CDNet. Firstly, it introduces an indirect self-attention mechanism that can be effortlessly integrated as a module into any convolutional neural network (CNN). Additionally, the computational cost of the self-attention mechanism has been effectively reduced, resulting in improved overall computational efficiency. Lastly, CDNet attains state-of-the-art performance on three benchmark datasets for similar types of image classification networks. Abstract

A new adsorbent modified from orange peel (OP) was successfully synthesized by ethylenediamine crosslinking method to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. The modified orange peel powder (MOPP) was investigated in a batch adsorption system, including both equilibrium adsorption isotherms and kinetics. Effects of several factors, including adsorbent dose, initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration were studied. The data indicated that the pH was not an essential factor that affected the adsorption process, it has a wide pH range from 4 to 10, and high adsorbent dose and lower Cr(VI) concentration could increase the Cr(VI) removal efficiency. Equilibrium data were analysed using the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models and found to be well represented by the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum capacity (qmax) obtained from Langmuir model was 52.08 mg/g at pH 6.0. The kinetics of adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The results suggest that MOPP is an inexpensive and efficient adsorbent for removing Cr(VI) from aqueous solution.

Abstract

A mini-PET style detector system is being developed for a plant imaging application with a compact array of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) replacing position sensitive photomultipliers (PSPMT). In addition to compactness, the use of SiPMs will allow imaging setups involving high strength MRI-type magnetic fields. The latter will allow for better position resolution of the initial positron annihilations in the plant tissue. In the present work, prototype arrays are tested for the uniformity of their response as it is known that PSPMTs require significant gain compensation on the individual channels to achieve an improved uniformity in response. Twenty-four rabbits were injected with the VX2 tumor via the portal vein to establish the PVTT model. The rabbits (n=6/treatment group) were randomly assigned into four groups. Rabbits of groups A, B and C received an infusion of iron-labeled MNCs via the hepatic artery, the portal vein or the auricular vein, respectively, whereas rabbits of group D received an injection of normal saline via the auricular vein 7 days after the injection of VX2 tumors. MRI was performed, and the signal intensity (SI) of the PVTTs was measured on T2-weighted images (T2WIs) 1 day after the transfusion of iron-labeled cells.Results: The SI of PVTTs, as measured on T2WIs, in rabbits of groups A, B, C and D was 241.400 (172.350, 364.825), 221.150 (203.775, 318.225), 590.200 (363.325, 728.875) and 568.050 (474.725, 705.150), respectively. Our data showed a significant decrease in the SI of PVTTs in rabbits of groups A and B compared with rabbits of groups C and D (group A vs group C, U=4.000, p=0.025; group A vs group D, U=2.000, p=0.010; group B vs group C, U=4.000, p=0.025; group B vs group D, U=1.000, p=0.006). There was no significant difference in the SI of PVTTs in rabbits of group A and B.Conclusion: Our results indicated that the portal vein and the hepatic artery supplied blood flow to the PVTT in rabbits.Keywords: portal vein tumor thrombus, magnetic resonance imaging, mononuclear cells

21. Becoming-monster: Ecoaesthetics and feminist criticism of Chinese animation White Snake (2019)1

Abstract

This article examines Chinese animation Baishe: Yuanqi (White Snake) () and discusses how ecoaesthetics are intertwined with questions of gender representations. Ecoaesthetics are broadly defined to consider the relationship between the human and natural world via de-anthropocentrism – which is the criticism of a human-centred view of the world that surrounds us. The film White Snake focuses on a man who becomes a monster to be with the creature he loves. This article argues that White Snake provides a multi-species model for ecocriticism. On the one hand, the film presents ecological thoughts that showcases a contradictory but symbiotic relationship between human and non-humans; on the other hand, the film neglects the connection between ecoaesthetics and feminist criticism so that it ends up portraying an ecological system that is under the inveterate patriarchal reign and therefore violates ideas around equality in ecoaesthetics. I propose a notion becoming-monster to decipher this ambivalent ecoaesthetic representation. The representation of becoming-monster showcases the harmony that can potentially exist between the human and the non-human appealing de-anthropocentric actions while the ideal image of the equality between human and non-human others is in fact under the male gaze.

CD8, PD-1, and PD-L1 was assessed by immunohistochemistry on continuous paraffin-embedded slides. Kaplan–Meier method and COX regression model were applied in the survival analyses.Results: Baseline characteristics were comparable between the training (n=118) and validation (n=113) sets. Patients with high CD8+ T lymphocytes infiltration and low PD-1 expression had longer survival in both sets (P=0.0106 and P=0.0047 in training set, P=0.0291 and P=0.0011 in validation set, respectively). However, survival stratified by PD-L1 was only insignificant or marginally significant. 29. Queer sensation and non-representational queer reading: a case study of Wu Hao's All in My Family.

Abstract

This article develops a non-representational queer approach to the analysis of first-person queer documentary. I suggest that a change of the view from investigating queer representations to exploring queer sensation may release the desire and repression that are both hidden and maintained with images of queerness. Queer sensation in this article refers to the existence of a complex relationship between queer and familial kinship, which affectively infiltrates the queer documentary. To chart queer sensation, I propose the notion of non-representational queer reading that foregrounds the approach of charting queer sensation rather than defining it. Non-representational queer reading comprises affect-based non-representational theory and the idea of queer reading. Non-representational queer reading queers the way of analysing queer documentary that follows the idea of mobility and flexibility as the essence of queerness. Utilising Wu Hao's All in My Family (2019) as an example, I argue that Wu's documentary sheds light on a complex queer sensation which not only overflows from the film but also pervades within the heterosexual-dominated Chinese society outside the screen. 35. Preparation and characterization of electrospun PLGA-SF nanofibers as a potential drug delivery system

Abstract

Currently drug-controlled release technology has gained a great deal of attention on the field of biomedicine. Nevertheless, most drug-controlled release systems usually require complex modification. Herein, the monolayer and multilayer structure nanofibers for drug delivery of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), as a model drug, were fabricated using the one-step electrospinning technique for the first time, which was composed with the poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and silk fibroin (SF). Meanwhile, the effects of the mass radio of PLGA to SF on the properties of the electrospun monolayer nanofiber membrane was further investigated. The results of the electrospun monolayer PLGA-SF nanofiber membrane with mass radio of 2:1 displayed significant improvement in hydrophilicity as well as mechanical properties compared to the other mass radio of nanofibers membranes. Moreover, drug release studies revealed that nanofiber membrane with multilayer structure was able to promote a much more sustained release of ASA in comparison with monolayer PLGA-SF nanofibers membranes. More remarkable, the nanofiber membrane with multilayer structure presented good biocompatibility. Overall, these results demonstrate the potential of using PLGA-SF nanofibers with multilayer structure as a scaffold for drug-controlled release.

36. High selective property of gelatin/MWCNTs functionalized carbon fiber microelectrode: Toward real-time monitoring of ascorbate

Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as one of powerful materials for in vivo electrochemistry sensing. However, the construction of CNTs as the bio-interface on the electrode surface is still limited because of the toxicity. On the other hand, the adsorption of proteins also renders a great challenge against the stability and sensitivity of implanted electrode. In this work, we validated the protein pre-treated strategy as an effective pre-correction way for the in vivo monitoring of neurochemical small molecule using the gelatin-MWCNTs functionalized carbon fiber microelectrodes (gelatin-MWCNTs/CFME). The gelatin-MWCNTs/CFME presented excellent stability and selectivity with well-maintained sensitivity, which was almost the same as that of the pre-correction. In addition, the well-maintained sensitivity enabled the gelatin-MWCNTs/CFME to detect the ascorbate in human blood sample and be interference-free from proteins. More remarkable, the gelatin-MWCNTs presented excellent biocompatibility. The superior properties along with an improvement in the biocompatibility of CNTs has made the gelatin-MWCNTs a promising candidate to be used as in in vivo electrochemical sensing.
