Abstract Understanding large-scale cooperation among related individuals has been one of the largest challenges. Since humans are in multiple social networks, the theoretical framework of multilayer networks is perfectly suited for studying this fascinating aspect of our biology. To that effect, we here study the cooperation in evolutionary game on interdependent networks. Importantly, a part of players are set to adopt Discrepant Accumulations Strategy. Players employing this mechanism not only use their payoffs in the multilayer network as the basis for the updating process as in previous experiments, but also take into account the similarities and differences in strategies across different layers. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that considering the similarities and differences in strategies across layers when calculating fitness can significantly enhance the cooperation level in the system. By examining the behavior of different pairing modes within cooperators and defectors, the equilibrium state can be attributed to the evolution of correlated pairing modes between interdependent networks. Our results provide a theoretical analysis of the group cooperation induced by the Discrepant Accumulations Strategy. And we also discuss potential implications of these findings for future human experiments concerning the cooperation on multilayer networks.

Abstract Background Liver lipid dysregulation is one of the major factors in the decline of production performance in late-stage laying hens. Silymarin (SIL), a natural flavonolignan extracted from milk thistle, is known for its hepatoprotective and lipid-lowering properties in humans. This study evaluates whether SIL can provide similar benefits to late-stage laying hens. A total of 480 68-week-old Lohmann Pink laying hens were randomly assigned into 5 groups, each group consisting of 6 replicates with 16 hens each. The birds received a basal diet either without silymarin (control) or supplemented with silymarin at concentrations of 250, 500, 750, or 1,000 mg/kg (SIL250, SIL500, SIL750, SIL1000) over a 12-week period. Results The CON group exhibited a significant decline in laying rates from weeks 9 to 12 compared to the initial 4 weeks (P = 0.042), while SIL supplementation maintained consistent laying rates throughout the study (P > 0.05). Notably, the SIL500 and SIL750 groups showed higher average egg weight than the CON group during weeks 5 to 8 (P = 0.049). Abstract Segmental bone defects, arising from factors such as trauma, tumor resection, and congenital malformations, present significant clinical challenges that often necessitate complex reconstruction strategies. Hydrogels loaded with multiple osteogenesis-promoting components have emerged as promising tools for bone defect repair. While the osteogenic potential of the Piezo1 agonist Yoda1 has been demonstrated previously, its hydrophobic nature poses challenges for effective loading onto hydrogel matrices.In this study, we address this challenge by employing Yoda1-pretreated bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (BMSCs) exosomes (Exo-Yoda1) alongside exosomes derived from BMSCs (Exo-MSC). Comparatively, Exo-Yoda1-treated BMSCs exhibited enhanced osteogenic capabilities compared to both control groups and Exo-MSC-treated counterparts. Notably, Exo-Yoda1-treated cells demonstrated similar functionality to Yoda1 itself. Transcriptome analysis revealed activation of osteogenesis-associated signaling pathways, indicating the potential transduction of Yoda1-mediated signals such as ErK, a finding validated in this study. Furthermore, we successfully integrated Exo-Yoda1 into gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)/methacrylated sodium alginate (SAMA)/β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) hydrogels. These Exo-Yoda1-loaded hydrogels demonstrated augmented osteogenesis in subcutaneous ectopic osteogenesis nude mice models and in rat skull bone defect model. In conclusion, our study introduces Exo-Yoda1-loaded GELMA/SAMA/β-TCP hydrogels as a promising approach to promoting osteogenesis. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder that can affect the balance of bone metabolism and bone microenvironment, leading to impaired fracture healing. There are several underlying mechanisms which contributing to the impaired diabetic bone microenvironment such as hyperglycemia, the production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), inflammation, and oxidative stress, etc. Recent studies have achieved great progress in developing novel smart biomaterials in improving the diabetic bone microenvironment to promote diabetic fracture healing. In this paper, we reviewed the mechanisms on DM-induced impaired fracture healing. Meanwhile, we also summarized the smart biomaterials used to improve the local microenvironment of diabetic fractures healing, which provides a novel perspective for the future treatment of fractures in diabetic patients.

The 3D reconstruction and virtual display of wooden furniture cultural relics were investigated using laser scanning and CT scanning techniques. The suitability of different 3D reconstruction techniques and virtual display approaches were considered. The experiments demonstrated that digital models obtained from both laser scanning and CT scanning can be integrated seamlessly into virtual environments created with 3DMAX for exhibition purposes. Additionally, post-processing software, such as PR or AE, can be utilized to synthesize virtual display video. The resulting images exhibit self-adaptation capabilities, with clear and undistorted 3D model and texture image. Moreover, other types of scanned models are suitable for 3D micro-scale model printing, although CT-based models tend to achieve higher printing accuracy compared to those generated by laser scanning technology. However, the precision of 3D printing model is contingent upon factors such as the precision of digital model, the type of printer, and the printing material.

Abstract The signal sequence played a crucial role in the efficacy of mRNA vaccines against virus pandemic by influencing antigen translation. However, limited research had been conducted to compare and analyze the specific mechanisms involved. In this study, a novel approach was introduced by substituting the signal sequence of the mRNA antigen to enhance its immune response. Computational simulations demonstrated that various signal peptides differed in their binding capacities with the signal recognition particle (SRP) 54 M subunit, which positively correlated with antigen translation efficiency. Our data revealed that the signal sequences of tPA and IL-6-modified receptor binding domain (RBD) mRNA vaccines sequentially led to higher antigen expression and elicited more robust humoral and cellular immune protection against the SARS-CoV-2 compared to the original signal sequence. By highlighting the importance of the signal sequence, this research provided a foundational and safe approach for ongoing modifications in signal sequence-antigen design, aiming to optimize the efficacy of mRNA vaccines.

Efficient translation mediated by the 5′ untranslated region (5′ UTR) is essential for the robust efficacy of mRNA vaccines. However, the N1-methyl-pseudouridine (m1Ψ) modification of mRNA can impact the translation efficiency of the 5′ UTR. We discovered that the optimal 5′ UTR for m1Ψ-modified mRNA (m1Ψ–5′ UTR) differs significantly from its unmodified counterpart, highlighting the need for a specialized tool for designing m1Ψ–5′ UTRs rather than directly utilizing high-expression endogenous gene 5′ UTRs. In response, we developed a novel machine learning-based tool, Smart5UTR, which employs a deep generative model to identify superior m1Ψ–5′ UTRs in silico. The tailored loss function and network architecture enable Smart5UTR to overcome limitations inherent in existing models. As a result, Smart5UTR can successfully design superior 5′ UTRs, greatly benefiting mRNA vaccine development. Notably, Smart5UTR-designed superior 5′ UTRs significantly enhanced antibody titers induced by COVID-19 mRNA vaccines against the Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2, surpassing the performance of vaccines using high-expression endogenous gene 5′ UTRs.

Abstract Introduction Social network strategies, in which social networks are utilized to influence individuals or communities, are increasingly being used to deliver human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) interventions to key populations. We summarized and critically assessed existing research on the effectiveness of social network strategies in promoting HIV self‐testing (HIVST). Methods Using search terms related to social network interventions and HIVST, we searched five databases for trials published between 1st January 2010 and 30th June 2023. Outcomes included uptake of HIV testing, HIV prevalence and linkage to antiretroviral therapy (ART) or HIV care. We used network meta‐analysis to assess the uptake of HIV testing through social network strategies compared with control methods. A pairwise meta‐analysis of studies with a comparison arm that reported outcomes was performed to assess relative risks (RR) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results Among the 4496 manuscripts identified, 39 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria, including one quasi‐experimental study, 22 randomized controlled trials and 16 observational studies. Networks HIVST testing was organized by peers (distributed to known peers, 15 studies), partners (distributed to their sexual partners, 16 studies) and peer educators (distributed to unknown peers, 8 studies). Among social networks, simulating the possibilities of ranking position, peer distribution had the highest uptake of HIV testing (84% probability), followed by partner distribution (80% probability) and peer educator distribution (74% probability). Pairwise meta‐analysis showed that peer distribution (RR 2.29, 95% CI 1.54−3.39, 5 studies) and partner distribution (RR 1.76, 95% CI 1.50−2.07, 10 studies) also increased the probability of detecting HIV reactivity during testing within the key population when compared to the control. Discussion All of the three social network distribution strategies enhanced the uptake of HIV testing compared to standard facility‐based testing. Linkage to ART or HIV care remained comparable to facility‐based testing across the three HIVST distribution strategies. Conclusions Network‐based HIVST distribution is considered effective in augmenting HIV testing rates and reaching marginalized populations compared to facility‐based testing. These strategies can be integrated with the existing HIV care services, to fill the testing gap among key populations globally. PROSPERO Number CRD42022361782

Tibetan sheep play a vital role in the livelihoods of herders and are an important part of the ecosystem of the Tibetan Plateau. In order to study the characteristics of the gut microorganisms of Tibetan sheep at high altitude, this study employed macrogenomic techniques to analyse the diversity and differences in the gut flora of Tibetan sheep in different regions of high altitude and high cold. The results demonstrated that at the phylum level, the dominant phylum in the ileo-cecum segment of Tibetan sheep in Qilian, Henan and Gonghe counties was identical, namely Euryarchaeota, Firmicutes and Ascomycota. At the level of the archaebacterial genus, the dominant bacteria of the ileocecal segment of Tibetan sheep in Qilian County, Henan County and Gonghe County were Methanobrevibacter. At the level of bacterial genus, the dominant bacteria of Tibetan sheep ileocecal in Qilian County and Henan County were Bacteroides, while in Gonghe County, the dominant bacteria were Bifidobacterium. At the level of fungal genus, there were notable differences in the abundance of Tibetan sheep ileocecal genus across different regions. However, the abundance of cecum genus exhibited a more consistent trend across regions. From the perspective of functional prediction, the metabolic pathways enriched in the intestinal segments of Tibetan sheep in different regions were found to be identical, with the relative abundance of each functional gene also being essentially uniform. This result will provide a foundation for further research on the mechanism of action of gut microbes in ruminants at high altitude and alpine regions.

The actual DOM in Chaohu Lake was used to feed cyanobacterial to explore the changes of microbial communities, fluorescence spectral characteristics and molecular composition of DOM during the degradation of cyanobacteria. It is found that cyanobacterial grow periodically depending on the concentration of nutrients with the decreasing concentration of nutrient salts. Both Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria have strong correlation with algae growth. Bacteroidetes has a positive correlation with algae growth, relationship on the contrary, Actinobacteria has a negative relationship. The humus-like components in the four groups are similar, but the protein-like component (C3) shows periodic changes with the life process of cyanobacteria. The average molecular weight of each sample detected by Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometer increases slightly and the DOM increase aromaticity in the end. In this study, the molecule of Carboxyl-Rich Alicyclic Molecules (CRAM) is difficult to be done by photodegradation and biodegradation in the early periods, but some molecules of CRAM are selectively degraded by microorganisms in the final period. The growth of cyanobacterial lead to increasing the concentration of protein-like and carbohydrate-like molecule of DOM in the water. In the final stage, the molecule group of CHO disappear significantly and the molecule group of heteroatomic group increase. Objective Proximal humeral fracture combined with contralateral midshaft clavicle fracture is an extremely rare injury in children. Few studies focus on the injury mechanism and treatment scheme. The aim of this study is to propose the possible mechanism of this injury and present the treatment results. Methods This retrospective study included children diagnosed with proximal humeral fractures combined with contralateral midshaft clavicle fractures from August 2016 to March 2019 in the corresponding author's institution. The patients received elastic stable intramedullary nails and external fixation as treatment. The radiological and clinical outcomes of treatments were evaluated using the imaging and the Constant–Murley score (CMS) in follow up. Results Twelve patients (eight males and four females) with an average age of 7.83 years old (age 5–12) were included in this research. All the patients had suffered a side impact in a road traffic accident or outdoor environment. Hypothesis about the mechanism was the proximal humerus was directly impacted at first and caused the surgical neck fracture, then the contralateral shoulder hits the solid object and the contralateral midshaft clavicle was fractured. During the average 45.2 months (range 36–57) follow‐up, all the patient's fractures achieved clinical and radiological union before 14 weeks without complications. Every patient had a satisfactory score (range from 92 to 100) on the CMS criteria for both shoulders. Conclusion The hypothesis about the mechanism of this combined injury in this study sounds reasonable. It highlights the need for safety‐related education about using a safety seat or wearing a seat belt to parents and caregivers, so as to avoid such injury even if the treatment with external fixation (EF) and proximal humeral and elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) showed good results.

Abstract Domain wall structures form spontaneously due to epitaxial misfit during thin film growth. Imaging the dynamics of domains and domain walls at ultrafast timescales can provide fundamental clues to features that impact electrical transport in electronic devices. Recently, deep learning based methods showed promising phase retrieval (PR) performance, allowing intensity-only measurements to be transformed into snapshot real space images. While the Fourier imaging model involves complex-valued quantities, most existing deep learning based methods solve the PR problem with real-valued based models, where the connection between amplitude and phase is ignored. To this end, we involve complex numbers operation in the neural network to preserve the amplitude and phase connection. Therefore, we employ the complex-valued neural network for solving the PR problem and evaluate it on Bragg coherent diffraction data streams collected from an epitaxial La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) thin film using an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL). Our proposed complex-valued neural network based approach outperforms the traditional real-valued neural network methods in both supervised and unsupervised learning manner. Phase domains are also observed from the LSCO thin film at an ultrafast timescale using the complex-valued neural network.

BackgroundMen who have sex with men (MSM) face significant risks of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and/or Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) infection. Nevertheless, only limited studies have looked into the site-specific infection and clearance of CT/NG. In order to prevent transmission, it is essential to understand the underlying factors that drive infection and spontaneous clearance.MethodsA 12-week cohort study examined the association between CT/NG infection, self-clearance, and sexual behaviors among MSM. The Willingness Service recruited participants who completed weekly questionnaires and provided urine, throat, and rectal swab samples.ResultsThe study involved 151 men, in which 51 (33.8%) were diagnosed with CT/NG infection during the study period. HIV (OR = 11.31), kissing (OR = 1.59), receptive oral sex (OR = 36.64), and insertive anal sex (OR = 19.73) constituted significant risk factors. 100% condom use (OR = 5.78) and antibiotic (OR = 7.53) were more likely to cause spontaneous clearance.DiscussionMSM may engage in riskier sexual behaviors due to insufficient knowledge and awareness of STI prevention, leading to increased susceptibility to NG/CT. It is crucial to concentrate on enhancing health education for MSM.ConclusionThis study found that the rectum was the most prevalent site of CT/NG and sexual behavior can influence the infection. Additionally, the appropriate use of antibiotics and consistent condom use may contribute to clear spontaneously.

In high-intensity farming, swiftly and accurately adjusting the proportion of artificially reared pollinators according to the flowering phenology of crops is vital. This adjustment is essential for sustaining crop yields without disrupting the ecological niche of native pollinators. Although advancements in remote sensing provide practical means to gather data on crop coverage and extent, identifying insect-pollinated crops during their initial flowering to guide the deployment of managed pollinators is an underexamined research area. Here, we tested the capability of utilizing Sentinel-2 satellite images combined with a deep learning model to map crop fields during the initial flowering stage of insect-pollinated crops in Zhaosu County, Xinjiang, China. Specifically, we examined rapeseed fields by employing 12 neural network designs to identify images of the initial flowering stage. Different network combinations of three convolutional neural network (CNN) models (U-Net, PSPNet, and DeepLab V3) and four different backbone networks (ResNet-18, ResNet-34, ResNet-50, and ResNet-101) were explored to determine the most effective model for detecting rapeseed fields at the initial flowering stage. A comparison was conducted with Sentinel-2 images obtained at the peak stage of rapeseed flowering. Our results suggest that the use of a deep learning model in combination with Sentinel-2 image data can successfully identify rapeseed fields at the initial flowering stage, thereby offering preliminary insights for the strategic introduction of managed pollinators. The PSPNet model emerged as the superior choice for the identification of rapeseed fields, exhibiting high accuracy in both detection and boundary recognition, with F1 scores of 88.17 % and an intersection over union (IoU) of 53.11 % during initial flowering and F1 scores of 93.33 % with an IoU of 53.49 % during peak flowering. The planting area of rapeseed fields detected by the model in Zhaosu County was 122.16 km2, distributed within an area of 1068 km2. These findings can provide foundational data for informed decisions regarding artificial pollinator supplementation, helping to sustain the health and stability of agricultural ecosystems.

Human adenovirus (HAdV) infection is a major cause of respiratory disease, yet no antiviral drugs have been approved for its treatment. Herein, we evaluated the antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects of cyclin-dependent protein kinase (CDK) inhibitor indirubin-3′-monoxime (IM) against HAdV infection in cells and a transgenic mouse model. After evaluating its cytotoxicity, cytopathic effect reduction, antiviral replication kinetics, and viral yield reduction assays were performed to assess the anti-HAdV activity of IM. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR), and western blotting were used to assess the effects of IM on HAdV DNA replication, transcription, and protein expression, respectively. IM significantly inhibited HAdV DNA replication as well as E1A and Hexon transcription, in addition to significantly suppressing the phosphorylation of the RNA polymerase II C-terminal domain (CTD). IM mitigated body weight loss, reduced viral burden, and lung injury, decreasing cytokine and chemokine secretion to a greater extent than cidofovir. Altogether, IM inhibits HAdV replication by downregulating CTD phosphorylation to suppress viral infection and corresponding innate immune reactions as a promising therapeutic agent.

Quantifying the evapotranspiration (ET) water consumption characteristics of typical vegetation [Robinia pseudoacacia (single vegetation), mixed plantations of Robinia pseudoacacia and Platycladus orientalis (double-mixed vegetation), and natural grassland (multiple-mixed vegetation)] in the Chinese Loess Plateau has both theoretical and practical significance. However, the proportionality and inverse hypotheses of ET, namely, the FAO-56 method and generalized complementary relationship (GCR), have limitations when used individually to estimate ET, evaporation (E), and transpiration (T). This study explores the feasibility of scaling water stress coefficient (Ks) using calibration-free or parameterized GCR for different vegetation types and quantities. The single crop coefficient (Kc) curves and basal crop coefficient adjustment (Kcb-a/Kcb-p) curves of typical vegetation were defined and validated to partition ET without soil moisture usage. The results revealed that both curves exhibited polynomial functional response relationships to the week ordinal (WO) of the growing season within a complete hydrological cycle (with 0.60 < R2 < 0.78 at the 0.01 significance level). By expressing the soil evaporation coefficient (Ke) as a function of Ks, Kc, and Kcb, the calibration-free combined method (combining the GCR and the FAO-56 method – GCR/FAO-56) demonstrated superior simulation performance for E, T, and ET across different vegetation types with an average Nash–Sutcliff Efficiency of 0.71 during the validation period compared to that of the parameterized method, with the highest sensitivity in E simulation. The simulated E, T, and ET values closely matched the actual values and maintained the order of Robinia pseudoacacia > mixed plantation > natural grassland during the growing season. The average biases for E, T, and ET during the validation period were 18.5, 7.0, and 25.5 mm, respectively, in Robinia pseudoacacia; 10.8, 11.1, and 19.7 mm in mixed plantation; and 2.7, 7.0, and 19.6 mm in natural grassland. The overall T/ET ratios for both plantations exceeded 51.07%, with mixed plantation being higher, surpassing 70% in dry years and exhibiting minimal variation in T (44.4 mm) across hydrological years. However, T/ET ratios in natural grassland were < 0.5, indicating that E was the primary form of water consumption. Average relative biases of the simulated and actual T/ET values were only 1.76%, 2.53%, and 1.87% for Robinia pseudoacacia, mixed plantation, and natural grassland, respectively. Furthermore, the accuracy of the calibration-free combined method increased with the number of vegetation species during the validation period. This study extended and discussed the feasibility in typical vegetation of combining the positive and negative correlation principles of evapotranspiration and further provided a possibility for how to partition ET with a fewer dataset [Rn, u, Tavg, RH or Td, P, LAI] without soil moisture, and also provided scientific suggestions for future vegetation restoration as well as water resources management.

BackgroundSexual health influencers (SHIs) are individuals actively sharing sexual health information with their peers, and they play an important role in promoting HIV care services, including the secondary distribution of HIV self-testing (SD-HIVST). Previous studies used a 6-item empirical leadership scale to identify SHIs. However, this approach may be biased as it does not consider individuals’ social networks. ObjectiveThis study used a quasi-experimental study design to evaluate how well a newly developed machine learning (ML) model identifies SHIs in promoting SD-HIVST compared to SHIs identified by a scale whose validity had been tested before. MethodsWe recruited participants from BlueD, the largest social networking app for gay men in China. Based on their responses to the baseline survey, the ML model and scale were used to identify SHIs, respectively. This study consisted of 2 rounds, differing in the upper limit of the number of HIVST kits and peer-referral links that SHIs could order and distribute (first round ≤5 and second round ≤10). Consented SHIs could order multiple HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits and generate personalized peer-referral links through a web-based platform managed by a partnered gay-friendly community-based organization. SHIs were encouraged to share additional kits and peer-referral links with their social contacts (defined as “alters”). SHIs would receive US $3 incentives when their corresponding alters uploaded valid photographic testing results to the same platform. Our primary outcomes included (1) the number of alters who conducted HIVST in each group and (2) the number of newly tested alters who conducted HIVST in each. We used negative binomial regression to examine group differences during the first round (February-June 2021), the second round (June-November 2021), and the combined first and second rounds, respectively. ResultsIn January 2021, a total of 1828 men who have sex with men (MSM) completed the survey. Overall, 393 SHIs (scale=195 and ML model=198) agreed to participate in SD-HIVST. Among them, 229 SHIs (scale=116 and ML model=113) ordered HIVST on the web. Compared with the scale group, SHIs in the ML model group motivated more alters to conduct HIVST (mean difference [MD] 0.88, 95% CI 0.02-2.22; adjusted incidence risk ratio [aIRR] 1.77, 95% CI 1.07-2.95) when we combined the first and second rounds. Although the mean number of newly tested alters was slightly higher in the ML model group than in the scale group, the group difference was insignificant (MD 0.35, 95% CI –0.17 to –0.99; aIRR 1.49, 95% CI 0.74-3.02). ConclusionsAmong Chinese MSM, SHIs identified by the ML model can motivate more individuals to conduct HIVST than those identified by the scale. Future research can focus on how to adapt the ML model to encourage newly tested individuals to conduct HIVST. Abstract Background The pathogenetic mechanism of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases is associated with insulin resistance (IR), which serves as a metabolic risk factor. As a novel indication for IR, triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index may predict cardiovascular disease outcomes. Methods In current study, a cohort of 157 individuals with newly developed de novo lesions who received DCB angioplasty between January 2017 and May 2021 were included. The midterm follow-up clinical results consisted of the presence of vessel-oriented composite endpoint (VOCE). The baseline TyG index was divided into three groups by tertiles. This study compared various clinical characteristics and parameters among different groups during DCB angioplasty. A multivariate Cox regression model was built to investigate the potential predictors. Results Higher TyG index indicated an increased risk of VOCE according to the adjusted model (HR = 4.0, 95%Cl: 1.0-15.4, P = 0.047). There are currently approximately 4000 mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 S protein gene and emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants continue to spread rapidly worldwide. Universal vaccines with high efficacy and safety urgently need to be developed to prevent SARS-CoV-2 variants pandemic. Here, we described a novel self-assembling universal mRNA vaccine containing a heterologous receptor-binding domain (HRBD)-based dodecamer (HRBDdodecamer) against SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Alpha (B.1.1.7), Beta (B.1.351), Gamma (B.1.1.28.1), Delta (B.1.617.2) and Omicron (B.1.1.529). HRBD containing four heterologous RBD (Delta, Beta, Gamma, and Wild-type) can form a stable dodecameric conformation under T4 trimerization tag (Flodon, FD). The HRBDdodecamer -encoding mRNA was then encapsulated into the newly-constructed LNPs consisting of a novel ionizable lipid (4N4T). The obtained universal mRNA vaccine (4N4T-HRBDdodecamer) presented higher efficiency in mRNA transfection and expression than the approved ALC-0315 LNPs, initiating potent immune protection against the immune escape of SARS-CoV-2 caused by evolutionary mutation. These findings demonstrated the first evidence that structure-based antigen design and mRNA delivery carrier optimization may facilitate the development of effective universal mRNA vaccines to tackle SARS-CoV-2 variants pandemic.

We reviewed 4D CT images of 55 patients [mean age, 52 years ± 11 (standard deviation); 23 females] who underwent adrenal venous sampling between August 2017 and February 2021. Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare form of adult-onset α-synucleinopathy. Meige syndrome, identified as bilateral blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia, is a type of focal dystonic movement disorder. This case report aims to highlight the clinical features of multiple system atrophy associated with Meige syndrome in a patient. Additionally, we aim to provide the treatment experience in a patient with Meige syndrome as this is an extremely rare clinical case.

Stress drop measures the stress release level over a fault during an earthquake rupture. As one of the important parameters for characterizing source mechanisms and predicting strong ground motions, the stress drop is controlled by the tectonic environment, focal mechanism, and type of earthquake sequence. The stress drop measurements from the seismic data also depend on the observation frequency band. Therefore, the values obtained from various seismic phases, such as body and surface waves, may be different. Previous studies have often used indirect methods to remove the attenuation effects along the propagation path to obtain the source spectra and then estimate the stress drops. Using a broadband high-resolution Lg-wave attenuation model, the attenuation effect can be directly corrected to obtain the Lg-wave source excitation spectra. By fitting the observed spectra to the theoretical source model, we can calculate the seismic moments and corner frequencies from which the stress drops can be calculated. Taking a typical tectonic earthquake and a potentially induced earthquake, that is, the 2017 MS7.0 Jiuzhaigou earthquake sequence and the 2019 MS 6.0 Changning earthquake sequence, in the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau as examples, we explored the potential physical differences between tectonic and induced earthquakes. The stress drop in the 2017 Jiuzhaigou mainshock was approximately 27 MPa. The stress drops, and the magnitude of its aftershocks rapidly decay. However, for the 2019 Changning earthquake sequence, the temporal variation of stress drops declined slowly, with two aftershocks having stress drops comparable to the main shock. For an area with long-term water injection, it takes a long time to recover to its equilibrium status once a large earthquake disturbs the regional stress field. Given that no apparent difference in the absolute level of stress drops can be observed between the two types of earthquake sequences, the stress drops alone cannot be used to distinguish between induced and tectonic earthquakes in this area. The increasingly accumulated underground water may have created pathways linking multiple fault systems in the changing salt mining. Thus, the possibility of future induced earthquakes cannot be ruled out.

R-tree is an important multi-dimensional data structure widely employed in many applications for storing and querying spatial data. As GPUs emerge as powerful computing hardware platforms, a GPU-based parallel R-tree becomes the key to efficiently port R-tree-related applications to GPUs. However, traditional tree-based data structures can hardly be directly ported to GPUs, and it is also a great challenge to develop highly efficient parallel tree-based data structures on GPUs. The difficulty mostly lies in the design of tree-based data structures and related operations in the context of many-core architecture that can facilitate parallel processing. We summarize our contributions as follows: (i) design a GPU-friendly data structure to store spatial data; (ii) present two parallel R-tree construction algorithms and one parallel R-tree query algorithm that can take the hardware characteristics of GPUs into consideration; and (iii) port the vector map overlay system from CPU to GPU to demonstrate the feasibility of parallel R-tree. Experimental results show that our parallel R-tree on GPU is efficient and practical. Compared with the traditional CPU-based sequential vector map overlay system, our vector map overlay system based on parallel R-tree can achieve nearly 10-fold speedup.

The progressive decline of the coal industry necessitates the development of effective treatment solutions for acid mine drainage (AMD), which is characterized by high acidity and elevated concentrations of heavy metals. This study proposes an innovative approach leveraging sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) acclimated to contaminated anaerobic environments. The research focused on elucidating the physiological characteristics and optimal growth conditions of SRB, particularly in relation to the pH level and temperature. The experimental findings reveal that the SRB exhibited a sulfate removal rate of 88.86% at an optimal temperature of 30 °C. Additionally, SRB gel particles were formulated using sodium alginate (SA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and their performance was assessed under specific conditions (pH = 6, C/S = 1.5, T = 30 °C, CMC = 4.5%, BSNa = 0.4 mol/L, and cross-linking time = 9 h). Under these conditions, the SRB gel particles demonstrated an enhanced sulfate removal efficiency of 91.6%. Thermal analysis via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) provided further insights into the stability and properties of the SRB gel spheres. The findings underscore the potential of SRB-based bioremediation as a sustainable and efficient method for AMD treatment, offering a novel and environmentally friendly solution to mitigating the adverse effects of environmental contamination.

The Huitang duck (HT), a long-domesticated elite local breed from Hunan Province, China, with excellent meat quality, has not had its population genetic structure and genomic selective sweeps extensively studied to date. This study measured the phenotypic characteristics of HT and conducted comparative analysis between HT and 16 different duck breeds, including wild, indigenous, and meat breeds, to characterize its population structure and genetic potential. The results revealed that HT is a dual-purpose indigenous breed with a genetic background closely related to the Youxian sheldrake and Linwu ducks. In the selective sweep analysis between HT and Linwu ducks, genes such as PLCG2, FN1, and IGF2BP2, which are associated with muscle growth and development, were identified near the 27 selection signals. The comparison between HT and Jinding ducks revealed 68 selective signals that contained important genes associated with ovarian development (GRIK4, MAP3K8, and TGIF1) and egg-laying behaviors (ERBB4). Selective sweep analysis between HT and Youxian sheldrake ducks found 93 selective regions covering genes related to both meat (IGF1R and IGFBP5) and egg-production (FOXO3 and ITPR1) traits. Our study may provide novel knowledge for exploring the population structure and genetic potential of HT, offering a theoretical basis for its breeding strategies in the future.

With the processes of industrialization and urbanization, heavy metal ion pollution has become a thorny problem in water systems. Among the various technologies developed for the removal of heavy metal ions, the adsorption method is widely studied by researchers and various nanomaterials with good adsorption performances have been prepared during the past decades. In this paper, a variety of novel nanomaterials with excellent adsorption performances for Pb(II) and Cu(II) reported in recent years are reviewed, such as carbon-based materials, clay mineral materials, zero-valent iron and their derivatives, MOFs, nanocomposites, etc. The novel nanomaterials with extremely high adsorption capacity, selectivity and particular nanostructures are summarized and introduced, along with their advantages and disadvantages. And, some future research priorities for the treatment of wastewater are also prospected.

Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a serious health threat and becomes a new challenge. T2DM patients with CKD fall into three categories, diabetic nephropathy (DN), non-diabetic kidney disease (NDKD), and diabetic nephropathy plus non-diabetic kidney disease (DN + NDKD), according to kidney biopsy. The purpose of our study was to compare the clinical characteristics and kidney outcomes of DN, NDKD, and DN + NDKD patients. Methods Data on clinical characteristics, pathological findings, and prognosis were collected from June 2016 to July 2022 in patients with previously diagnosed T2DM and confirmed DN and or NDKD by kidney biopsy at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, China. The endpoint was defined as kidney transplantation, dialysis, or a twofold increase in serum creatinine. Results In our 6-year retrospective cohort research, a total of 268 diabetic patients were admitted and categorized into three groups by kidney biopsy. The 268 patients were assigned to DN (n = 74), NDKD (n = 109), and DN + NDKD (n = 85) groups. The most frequent NDKD was membranous nephropathy (MN) (n = 45,41.28%). Hypertensive nephropathy was the most common subtype in the DN+NDKD group (n = 34,40%). A total of 34 patients (12.7%) reached the endpoint. Abstract Urethral stricture refers to the narrowing of the urethral lumen. While previous studies have hinted at inflammation as the initial driver of this condition, the reasons and mechanisms behind its progression remain largely unknown. By Atomic force microscope (AFM), researchers measured the matrix stiffness of urethra to be 5.23 ± 0.37 kPa for normal tissue and 41.59 ± 2.48 kPa for stricture urethral scar. Similar results were observed in rat urethral stricture models, where the matrix stiffness of normal urethra was 4.29 ± 0.82 kPa, while 32.94 ± 7.12 kPa for urethral stricture scar. Notably, the matrix stiffness increased in rat models over time. To further investigate, polyacrylamide hydrogels were employed to mimic different levels of stiffness for normal and stricture condition. Interestingly, higher matrix stiffness led to an increased fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition (FMT) in rat urethral fibroblasts, indicated by enhanced expression of α-SMA and Collagen I, as well as changing in the morphology of fibroblast. RNA-seq analysis suggested that Igfbp3/Smads might regulate the progressive FMT in urethral stricture. In the experiment where the expression of Igfbp3 was inhibited, increasing matrix stiffness lose the potential to stimulate FMT progression and the expression of p-Smad2/3 decreased. On the contrary, overexpression of Igfbp3 promoted the process of FMT in urethral fibroblasts. In conclusion, Igfbp3/Smad pathway appeared to be involved in the progression of urethral fibrosis. This finding suggested that Igfbp3/Smad might be an promising target for future research and treatment in this filed.

Tilianin (Til), a flavonoid glycoside, is well-known for its therapeutic promise in treating inflammatory disorders. Its poor water solubility and permeability limit its clinical applicability. In order to overcome these restrictions, an antisolvent precipitation and ultrasonication technique was used to prepare amorphous tilianin nanocrystals (Til NCs). We have adjusted the organic solvents, oil-to-water ratio, stabilizer composition, and ultrasonic power and time by combining single-factor and central composite design (CCD) methodologies. The features of Til NCs were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning calorimetry (DSC), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Specifically, the optimized Til NCs were needle-like with a particle size ranging from 90 to 130 nm. PVA (0.3%, w/v) and TPGS (0.08%, w/v) stabilized them well. For at least two months, these Til NCs stayed amorphous and showed an impressive stability at 4 °C and 25 °C. Remarkably, Til NCs dissolved almost 20 times faster in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) than they did in crude Til. In RAW264.7 cells, Til NCs also showed a better cellular absorption as well as safety and protective qualities. Til NCs were shown to drastically lower reactive oxygen species (ROS), TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in anti-inflammatory experiments, while increasing IL-10 levels and encouraging M1 macrophages to adopt the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. Our results highlight the potential of amorphous Til NCs as a viable approach to improve Til’s anti-inflammatory effectiveness, solubility, and dissolving rate.

Abstract As a core step of obstacle avoidance and path planning, dynamic obstacle detection is critical for autonomous driving. This study aimed to propose a dynamic obstacle detection method based on U–V disparity and residual optical flow for autonomous driving. First, a drivable area of an unmanned vehicle was detected using U–V disparity images. Then, obstacles in the drivable area were detected using U–V disparity images and the geometric relationship between obstacle size and its disparity. Finally, the motion likelihood of each obstacle was estimated by compensating the camera ego-motion. The innovation of the proposed method was that the searching range of the moving obstacles was greatly narrowed by detecting the obstacles in the drivable area, which greatly improved not only the moving obstacle detection efficiency but also the detection accuracy. Datasets from the KITTI benchmark and our self-acquired campus scene data were chosen as testing samples. The experimental results showed that our method could achieve high detection precision, low missed detection rate and less time consumption.

Abstract Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine and metabolic disorder characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation. Previous studies have demonstrated that the gut microbiome can affect the host tissue cells’ mRNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modifications. This study aimed to understand the role of intestinal flora in ovarian cells inflammation by regulating mRNA m6A modification particularly the inflammatory state in PCOS. The gut microbiome composition of PCOS and Control groups was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing, and the short chain fatty acids were detected in patients’ serum by mass spectrometry methods. The level of butyric acid was found to be decreased in the serum of the obese PCOS group (FAT) compared to other groups, and this was correlated with increased Streptococcaceae and decreased Rikenellaceae based on the Spearman’s rank test. Additionally, we identified FOSL2 as a potential METTL3 target using RNA-seq and MeRIP-seq methodologies. Cellular experiments demonstrated that the addition of butyric acid led to a decrease in FOSL2 m6A methylation levels and mRNA expression by suppressing the expression of METTL3, an m6A methyltransferase. Additionally, NLRP3 protein expression and the expression of inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α) were downregulated in KGN cells. Butyric acid supplementation in obese PCOS mice improved ovarian function and decreased the expression of local inflammatory factors in the ovary. Taken together, the correlation between the gut microbiome and PCOS may unveil crucial mechanisms for the role of specific gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of PCOS. Furthermore, butyric acid may present new prospects for future PCOS treatments.

Abstract Mucosal immunity plays a significant role in the first-line defense against viruses transmitted and infected through the respiratory system, such as SARS-CoV-2. However, the lack of effective and safe adjuvants currently limits the development of COVID-19 mucosal vaccines. In the current study, we prepare an intranasal vaccine containing cationic crosslinked carbon dots (CCD) and a SARS-CoV-2 antigen, RBD-HR with spontaneous antigen particlization. Intranasal immunization with CCD/RBD-HR induces high levels of antibodies with broad-spectrum neutralization against authentic viruses/pseudoviruses of Omicron-included variants and protects immunized female BALB/c mice from Omicron infection. Despite strong systemic cellular immune response stimulation, the intranasal CCD/RBD-HR vaccine also induces potent mucosal immunity as determined by the generation of tissue-resident T cells in the lungs and airway. Moreover, CCD/RBD-HR not only activates professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs), dendritic cells, but also effectively targets nasal epithelial cells, promotes antigen binding via sialic acid, and surprisingly provokes the antigen-presenting of nasal epithelial cells. We demonstrate that CCD is a promising intranasal vaccine adjuvant for provoking strong mucosal immunity and might be a candidate adjuvant for intranasal vaccine development for many types of infectious diseases, including COVID-19.

Abstract Variable-temperature cryogenic ion mobility-mass spectrometry (VT-Cryo-IM-MS) was developed to examine the conformations of host-guest complexes. The VT-Cryo-IM-MS consists of an electrospray ionization source, a quadrupole ion trap, a cryogenic ion drift tube, and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The ion drift tube was cooled to 83 K with liquid nitrogen. Two sets of ion funnels are installed at the source and the drift tube to focus the ion beam. We used Li+-encapsulated fullerene (Li+@C60) as a reference ion to examine the ion-mobility resolution of the VT-Cryo-IM-MS apparatus because this ion has a rigid structure with a single conformer. The temperature dependence of collision cross section (CCS) of Li+@C60 and the resolution of the apparatus were determined at each temperature. We examined the conformations of host-guest complexes of a series of metal ions (M = Ca2+, Na+, Ag+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) with dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) by Cryo-IM-MS. All CCS distributions were fitted with two Gaussian functions which are assigned to closed and open conformers. These closed and open conformers have different distances between the two benzene rings of DB24C8. The abundance ratio of closed conformers for these M(DB24C8) complex ions depends on the guest M ion with an order, Ca2+ < Na+ < Ag+ < Cs+ < Rb+ < K+. The stability of the closed conformer of K+(DB24C8) originates from the benzene ring positional relationship which is quite close to that of the free benzene dimer. This special benzene dimer-like conformation produces the strong π-π interaction between the benzene rings of K+(DB24C8).

Abstract Background The HIV epidemic is still expanding among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China, but HIV testing rates remain suboptimal. Network-based interventions, such as secondary distribution, have shown promise to expand HIV self-testing (HIVST) among partners of MSM living with HIV (MLWH) but have not been widely implemented. Monetary incentives could enhance the secondary distribution of HIVST in some settings. We will conduct a randomized controlled trial to examine the effectiveness of monetary incentives in expanding the secondary distribution of HIVST among MLWH in China. Methods We will recruit 200 eligible participants at three antiretroviral therapy (ART) clinics in China. Participants are eligible if they are 18 years of age or over, assigned as male at birth, have had anal sex with men, are living with HIV, are willing to apply for the HIVST kit at ART clinics, and are willing to provide personal contact information for follow-up. Eligible participants will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to one of two groups: standard secondary distribution group and secondary distribution group with monetary incentives. Participants (defined as “index”) will distribute the HIVST kits to members of their social network (defined as “alter”) and will be required to complete a baseline survey and a 3-month follow-up survey. All alters will be encouraged to report their testing results by taking photos of used kits and completing an online survey. The primary study outcomes will compare the mean number of alters and newly-tested alters motivated by each index participant in each group. Secondary study outcomes will include the mean number of alters who tested positive, the cost per person tested, and the cost per HIV diagnosed for each group. Discussion Few studies have evaluated interventions to enhance the implementation of secondary distribution. Our study will provide information on the effectiveness of monetary incentives in expanding HIVST secondary distribution among MLWH. The findings of this trial will contribute to implementing HIVST secondary distribution services among MLWH in China and facilitating HIV case identifications. BackgroundHIV self-testing (HIVST) has been rapidly scaled up and additional strategies further expand testing uptake. Secondary distribution involves people (defined as “indexes”) applying for multiple kits and subsequently sharing them with people (defined as “alters”) in their social networks. However, identifying key influencers is difficult. ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop an innovative ensemble machine learning approach to identify key influencers among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) for secondary distribution of HIVST kits. MethodsWe defined three types of key influencers: (1) key distributors who can distribute more kits, (2) key promoters who can contribute to finding first-time testing alters, and (3) key detectors who can help to find positive alters. Four machine learning models (logistic regression, support vector machine, decision tree, and random forest) were trained to identify key influencers. An ensemble learning algorithm was adopted to combine these 4 models. For comparison with our machine learning models, self-evaluated leadership scales were used as the human identification approach. Four metrics for performance evaluation, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score, were used to evaluate the machine learning models and the human identification approach. Simulation experiments were carried out to validate our approach. ResultsWe included 309 indexes (our sample size) who were eligible and applied for multiple test kits; they distributed these kits to 269 alters. We compared the performance of the machine learning classification and ensemble learning models with that of the human identification approach based on leadership self-evaluated scales in terms of the 2 nearest cutoffs. Our approach outperformed human identification (based on the cutoff of the self-reported scales), exceeding by an average accuracy of 11.0%, could distribute 18.2% (95% CI 9.9%-26.5%) more kits, and find 13.6% (95% CI 1.9%-25.3%) more first-time testing alters and 12.0% (95% CI –14.7% to 38.7%) more positive-testing alters. Our approach could also increase the simulated intervention’s efficiency by 17.7% (95% CI –3.5% to 38.8%) compared to that of human identification. ConclusionsWe built machine learning models to identify key influencers among Chinese MSM who were more likely to engage in secondary distribution of HIVST kits. Wnt signaling pathways are transmitted via 10 homologous frizzled receptors (FZD1-10) in humans. Reagents broadly inhibiting Wnt signaling pathways reduce growth and metastasis of many tumors, but their therapeutic development has been hampered by the side effect. Inhibitors targeting specific Wnt-FZD pair(s) enriched in cancer cells may reduce side effect, but the therapeutic effect of narrow-spectrum Wnt-FZD inhibitors remains to be established in vivo. Here, we developed a fragment of C. difficile toxin B (TcdBFBD), which recognizes and inhibits a subclass of FZDs, FZD1/2/7, and examined whether targeting this FZD subgroup may offer therapeutic benefits for treating breast cancer models in mice. Utilizing 2 basal-like and 1 luminal-like breast cancer models, we found that TcdBFBD reduces tumor-initiating cells and attenuates growth of basal-like mammary tumor organoids and xenografted tumors, without damaging Wnt-sensitive tissues such as bones in vivo. Furthermore, FZD1/2/7-positive cells are enriched in chemotherapy-resistant cells in both basal-like and luminal mammary tumors treated with cisplatin, and TcdBFBD synergizes strongly with cisplatin in inhibiting both tumor types. These data demonstrate the therapeutic value of narrow-spectrum Wnt signaling inhibitor in treating breast cancers.

Abstract The pregnane X receptor (PXR) is an important regulator of hepatocellular carcinoma cellular resistance to antitumor drugs. Activation of PXR was modulated by the co-regulators. The target protein for the Xenopus plus end-directed kinesin-like protein (Xklp2) known as TPX2 that was previously considered as a tubulin regulator, also functions as the regulator of some transcription factors and pro-oncogenes in human malignances. However, the actions of TPX2 on PXR and HCC cells are still unclear. In the present study, our results demonstrate that the high expression of endogenous mRNA level of TPX2 not only correlated with the poor prognosis of advanced HCC patients who received sorafenib treatment but also with expression of PXR’s downstream genes, cyp3a4 and/or mdr-1. Results from luciferase and real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) showed that TPX2 leads to enhancement of the transcription factor activation of PXR. Protein–protein interactions between PXR and TPX2 were identified using co-immunoprecipitation. Mechanically, overexpression of TPX2 led to enhancement of PXR recruitment to its downstream gene cyp3a4’s promoter region (the PXRE region) or enhancer region (the XREM region). Treatment of HCC cells with paclitaxel, a microtubule promoter, led to enhancement of the effects of TPX2, whereas vincristine, a microtubule depolymerizing agent caused a decrease in TPX2-associated effects. TPX2 was found to cause acceleration of the metabolism or clearance of sorafenib, a typical tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) in HCC cells and in turn led to the resistance to sorafenib by HCC cells. By establishing novel actions of TXP2 on PXR in HCC cells, the results indicate that TPX2 could be considered a promising therapeutic target to enhance HCC cells sensitivity to antitumor drugs.

Abstract Background To estimate the incidence, prevalence and incidence-based mortality in patients with gynecologic sarcoma (GS), and described the trends of survival and initial treatments in the US by using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Methods GS cases aged 20 years or older between 1975 and 2015 were identified from SEER 9 registries. ABSTRACT Aims To explore the influence of nine healthy lifestyle factors on the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults in Guizhou, China. Methods Data were obtained from a large population‐based prospective cohort study in Guizhou Province, China. A total of 7,319 participants aged ≥18 years without diabetes at baseline were included in this study and were followed up from 2016 to 2020. A healthy lifestyle score was calculated based on the number of healthy lifestyle factors. Results During an average of 7.1 person‐years of follow‐up, 764 participants were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. While climate change and vegetation dynamics have a strong relationship, few studies have specifically measured the effects of these factors on runoff and sediment development in the gully zone of the Loess Plateau. This study investigates the monthly impacts of climatic change and vegetation dynamics on water flow and sediment movement in the gully zone of the Loess Plateau between 2000 and 2016. In this study, the standard gully watershed of the Loess Plateau is investigated using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The state of vegetation in the watershed is characterized by utilizing the vegetation index obtained using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), along with monthly hydro-meteorological and vegetation data. The collective impacts of vegetation dynamics, climate change, and runoff contribute to 74.3% of the monthly fluctuations in sediment levels. The data indicate that 31.6% of the monthly runoff variability can be ascribed to the combined influence of climate change and vegetation dynamics. Climate change significantly influences flow and sediment via direct and indirect mechanisms, primarily by altering the growth and development of vegetation, which subsequently impacts both runoff and sediment. The impact of vegetation on sediment (−0.246) is more pronounced compared to its impact on runoff (−0.239). Furthermore, the impact of vegetation on sediment (−0.038) was significantly less significant compared to the impact on runoff (−0.208). Hence, the vegetation in the watershed primarily mitigates sediment deposition and suspended sediment transit in the water body by regulating runoff, thereby reducing the sediment load. This study examines the intricate correlation between climate change and vegetation dynamics on water flow and sediment deposition in the gully region of the Loess Plateau. It can serve as a helpful resource for managing water resources, allocating agricultural water, and planning soil conservation in the region.

Accumulating evidence suggests that aging and senescence play crucial roles in tumorigenesis, cancer progression, and treatment. However, the influence of aging and senescence-related genes (ASRGs) on clinical outcomes and treatment options in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients remains unknown. Here, we developed an aging and senescence-related scoring system, ASRS, by integrating bulk transcriptome data from 22 LUAD datasets. In 3,243 LUAD samples, higher ASRS scores were associated with poor tumor stage and pathological grade, as well as shorter overall survival, disease-free survival, and recurrence-free survival. Additionally, ASRS was associated with different immune patterns in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Importantly, ASRS was found to predict therapeutic efficacy, with patients having a low ASRS benefiting from immunotherapy and those with a high ASRS responding better to chemotherapy. Therefore, ASRS represents a previously overlooked characteristic of LUAD that can influence patient outcomes and treatment success.

With the rapid development of modern seismic network, seismological signals can be digitally recorded in broad frequency band, larger dynamic range, and higher spatial density, which provide the possibility of obtaining fine structures of the quality factor Q in the earth by using a large number of high-quality seismic data. Lg wave is one of the most significant seismic phases at regional distances. As a guided wave (or superimposed higher-order surface waves) propagating in the crust, the Lg wave is often used for investigating crustal attenuation. This study systematically reviews the method for broadband Lg wave attenuation investigation, including the formulation of the tomographic inversion system and its relation with the data. We address many practical details regarding the data processing, including the regional seismic data collection, sampling the Lg signals and noise series, noise analysis, and data quality control, and the preparation of the single-station, two-station, and two-event data sets. We also briefly describe how the attenuation results can be applied to understand various geology, geophysics, and geodynamic problems. As an example, we demonstrate a complete workflow for investigating the Lg wave attenuation in the Taiwan Island in China and the surrounding region. Based on 8650 vertical-component seismograms from 416 earthquakes recorded by 86 broadband digital stations, we construct a high-resolution broadband Lg attenuation model in the study region. The frequency covers 0.05～10.0 Hz, and the resolution can reach to about 0.25º×0.25º in areas with the best data coverage. The tomographic results reveal significant lateral variations of crust Q values in the study region. The Taiwan Island is generally characterized by high Q. The surrounding regions are mostly in low Q, e.g., the Nanri Island basin in northeast Taiwan, the Tainan basin in southeast Taiwan, the collision zone between the Philippine and the Eurasian plates in eastern Taiwan, the Huadong basin, the Ryukyu arc, and the Okinawa trough, are all highly attenuated. These low-Q areas are likely related to strong tectonic activities due to plate collisions.

Abstract In order to solve the problems of different visual angles, such as large brightness and colour difference, and obvious image splicing trace, an algorithm of ring image fusion based on colour correction is proposed in this paper. According to the algorithm in this paper, a Matlab toolbox was made for image fusion simulation experiment. Structural similarity (SSIM) was used to evaluate the effectiveness of this method in reducing illumination and contrast difference and the mean value of SSIM was 0.8166. The algorithm is measured in the development board and accelerated by graphic processing unit to achieve the computing efficiency of 18 ms per frame and meet the real‐time requirements of the system.

Abstract Background Opaque bubble layer (OBL), which generates from photo-disruptive procedures on the cornea, has been a common phenomenon during femtosecond laser-assisted refractive surgeries and it would potentially impact eye tracking and flap lifting. And we have observed that an updated flap-making pattern could form less OBL clinically than the traditional pattern, which needed further approval. Thus, the purpose of this study is to prove our observation and investigate the possible risk factors related to the occurrence and type of OBL in laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flaps using the Visumax laser system. Methods This prospective study included 167 eyes of 86 patients (mean age: 27.5 ± 6.1 years) undergoing bilateral femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) for myopia/myopic astigmatism by the same surgeon from April 2020 to August 2020. Preoperative data on refraction, central corneal thickness (CCT), and keratometry as well as intraoperative data were included for analysis. A new flap-making pattern creating an offset between flap-cut and side-cut was adopted to compare with the traditional pattern. The operation video of flap formation was analyzed to identify the existence and type of OBL. The area covered by OBL and the ratio of OBL to flap were calculated using Image J software. Results Among 167 eyes, 54 eyes (32.3%) developed OBLs, consisting of 31 as hard OBL coexisting with soft OBL, and 23 as soft OBL alone. Abstract Single heuristic method and incomplete heuristic conditions were difficult to cluster a large number of addresses comprehensively and accurately. Therefore, this paper analysed the associations between Bitcoin transactions and addresses and used six heuristic conditions to cluster addresses and entities. We proposed an improved change address detection algorithm and compared it with the original change address algorithm to prove the effectiveness of the improved algorithm. By adding conditional constraints, the identified change address was more accurate, and the convergence speed of the algorithm was accelerated. Our work presented the pseudo‐anonymity mechanism of the Bitcoin system, which could be used by the law enforcement agencies to track and crack down illegal transactions.

Tibetan sheep have unique intestinal microorganisms in their intestines that are adapted to the highland alpine and anoxic environment. To further clarify the probiotic properties of Tibetan sheep-derived probiotics, we selected three Tibetan sheep-derived probiotic isolates (Enterococcus faecalis EF1-mh, Bacillus subtilis BS1-ql, and Lactobacillus sakei LS-ql) to investigate the protective mechanisms of monocultures and their complex strains against Clostridium perfringens type C infection in mice. We established a model of C. perfringens type C infection and used histology and molecular biology to analyze the effects and mechanisms of different probiotic treatments on mice after C. perfringens type C infection. After supplementation with either probiotics or complex probiotics, mice were improved in terms of weight reduction and reduced the levels of cytokines in serum and increased the levels of intestinal sIgA, and supplementation with complex probiotics was effective. In addition, both probiotic and complex probiotic supplementation effectively improved the damage of intestinal mucosa and spleen tissue. The relative expressions of Muc 2, Claudin-1, and Occludin genes were increased in the ileum. The three probiotics and the compound probiotics treatment significantly reduced the relative mRNA expression of toll-like/MyD88/NF-κB/MAPK. The effect of probiotic treatment was similar to the results of engramycin treatment, but the effect of engramycin treatment on intestinal sIgA was not significant. Our results clarify the immunomodulatory effects of the three probiotic isolates and the complex probiotics on C. perfringens infection, and the repair of the intestinal mucosal barrier.

Abstract The Anatolian Plateau, currently experiencing rapid uplift and westward escape, records both the termination of oceanic subduction and the conversion to continental collision. The crustal response to the transition of the subduction environment from eastern to western Anatolia can be inferred by the seismic velocity and attenuation structures. With this study, we construct a broadband Lg‐wave attenuation model for the Anatolian Plateau and use it to constrain lateral crust heterogeneities linked to this transition. Crustal Lg attenuation links late Cenozoic magmatism with asthenospheric upwelling by characterizing the lithospheric thermal structure. The widely distributed strong attenuation observed in eastern Anatolia may be related to the crustal partial melting due to mantle upwelling after the delamination and subsequent break‐off of the Bitlis slab. Lithospheric dripping in central Anatolia likely facilitates the mantle flows through the window between the Cyprus and Aegean slabs, which results in the piecemeal low QLg anomaly in central Anatolia.

Reference-based super-resolution (RefSR) has achieved remarkable progress and shows promising potential applications in the field of remote sensing. However, previous studies heavily rely on existing and high-resolution reference image (Ref), which is hard to obtain in remote sensing practice. To address this issue, a novel structure based on a zoom camera structure (ZCS) together with a novel RefSR network, namely AEFormer, is proposed. The proposed ZCS provides a more accessible way to obtain valid Ref than traditional fixed-length camera imaging or external datasets. The physics-enabled network, AEFormer, is proposed to super-resolve low-resolution images (LR). With reasonably aligned and enhanced attention, AEFormer alleviates the misalignment problem, which is challenging yet common in RefSR tasks. Herein, it contributes to maximizing the utilization of spatial information across the whole image and better fusion between Ref and LR. Extensive experimental results on benchmark dataset RRSSRD and real-world prototype data both verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Hopefully, ZCS and AEFormer can enlighten a new model for future remote sensing imagery super-resolution.

Despite the success of rotavirus vaccines, rotaviruses remain one of the leading causes of diarrheal diseases, resulting in significant childhood morbidity and mortality, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The reverse genetics system enables the manipulation of the rotavirus genome and opens the possibility of using rotavirus as an expression vector for heterologous proteins, such as vaccine antigens and therapeutic payloads. Here, we demonstrate that three positions in rotavirus genome—the C terminus of NSP1, NSP3 and NSP5—can tolerate the insertion of reporter genes. By using rotavirus expressing GFP, we develop a high-throughput neutralization assay and reveal the pre-existing immunity against rotavirus in humans and other animal species. Our work shows the plasticity of the rotavirus genome and establishes a high-throughput assay for interrogating humoral immune responses, benefiting the design of next-generation rotavirus vaccines and the development of rotavirus-based expression platforms.
