Abstract Background Pulmonary embolism (PE) is life-threatening and requires timely and accurate diagnosis, yet current imaging methods, like computed tomography pulmonary angiography, present limitations, particularly for patients with contraindications to iodinated contrast agents. We aimed to develop a quantitative texture analysis pipeline using machine learning (ML) based on non-contrast thoracic computed tomography (CT) scans to discover intensity and textural features correlated with regional lung perfusion (Q) physiology and pathology and synthesize voxel-wise Q surrogates to assist in PE diagnosis. Methods We retrospectively collected 99mTc-labeled macroaggregated albumin Q-SPECT/CT scans from patients suspected of PE, including an internal dataset of 76 patients (64 for training, 12 for testing) and an external testing dataset of 49 patients. Quantitative CT features were extracted from segmented lung subregions and underwent a two-stage feature selection pipeline. The prior-knowledge-driven preselection stage screened for robust and non-redundant perfusion-correlated features, while the data-driven selection stage further filtered features by fitting ML models for classification. The final classification model, trained with the highest-performing PE-associated feature combination, was evaluated in the testing cohorts based on the Area Under the Curve (AUC) for subregion-level predictability. The voxel-wise Q surrogate was then synthesized using the final selected feature maps (FMs) and model score maps (MSMs) to investigate spatial distributions. The Spearman correlation coefficient (SCC) and Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) were used to assess the spatial consistency between FMs or MSMs and Q-SPECT scans. Results The optimal model performance achieved an AUC of 0.863 during internal testing and 0.828 on the external testing cohort. The model identified a combination containing 14 intensity and textural features that were non-redundant, robust, and capable of distinguishing between high- and low-functional lung regions. Spatial consistency assessment in the internal testing cohort showed moderate-to-high agreement between MSMs and reference Q-SPECT scans, with median SCC of 0.66, median DSCs of 0.86 and 0.64 for high- and low-functional regions, respectively. Conclusions This study validated the feasibility of using quantitative texture analysis and a data-driven ML pipeline to generate voxel-wise lung perfusion surrogates, providing a radiation-free, widely accessible alternative to functional lung imaging in managing pulmonary vascular diseases. Abstract This study evaluates the survival outcomes of segmental ureterectomy (SU) combined with chemotherapy in patients with high-grade non-metastatic ureteral cancer (UC) using data from the SEER database. A total of 1757 patients with Grade III-IV non-metastatic UC were analyzed. Overall survival (OS) was assessed through Kaplan–Meier analysis, and independent prognostic factors were identified via Cox regression. A Nomogram model was developed and evaluated using the concordance index, area under the time-dependent ROC curve, calibration curves, and decision curve analysis. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates were 82.8%, 55.6%, and 42.8%, respectively. Age, treatment protocol, T stage, and N stage were significant prognostic factors. Both SU + chemotherapy and radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) + chemotherapy demonstrated comparable survival outcomes, outperforming surgery alone, particularly in patients aged 70 and older. The Nomogram demonstrated high predictive accuracy and clinical utility. These findings suggest that SU + chemotherapy offers survival benefits similar to RNU + chemotherapy, making it a viable option, especially for elderly patients or those with impaired renal function.

Abstract Objectives To quantitatively investigate the anatomy of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) for surgical reconstruction procedures in chronic ankle instability (CAI). Methods 3D MRI was performed on five fresh-frozen cadaveric ankles using six different spatial resolutions (0.3 × 0.3 × 0.3 mm3, 0.45 × 0.45 × 0.45 mm3, 0.6 × 0.6 × 0.6 mm3, 0.75 × 0.75 × 0.75 mm3, 0.9 × 0.9 × 0.9 mm3, 1.05 × 1.05 × 1.05 mm3). After comparing the MRI results with cadaver dissection, a resolution of 0.45 × 0.45 × 0.45 mm³ was selected for bilateral ankles MRI on 24 volunteers. Classification of the ATFL and four distances of surgically relevant bony landmarkers were analyzed (distance 1 and 3, the fibular origin of the ATFL and CFL to the tip of fibula, respectively; distance 2, the talar insertion of the ATFL to the bare zone of talus; distance 4, the calcaneal insertion of the CFL to the peroneal tubercle). Results In subjective evaluation, the interobserver ICC was 0.95 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.94–0.97) between two readers. The spatial resolution of 0.3 × 0.3 × 0.3 mm3 and 0.45 × 0.45 × 0.45 mm3 received highest subjective score on average and demonstrated highest consistency with autopsy measurements in objective evaluation. Measurements on the 48 volunteer ankles, distance 1 in type I and II were 12.65 ± 2.08 mm, 13.43 ± 2.06 mm (superior-banded in Type II) and 7.69 ± 2.56 mm (inferior-banded in Type II) (means ± SD), respectively. Distance 2 in type I and II were 10.90 ± 2.24 mm, 11.07 ± 2.66 mm (superior-banded in Type II), and 18.44 ± 3.28 mm (inferior-banded in Type II), respectively. Distance 3 and 4 were 4.71 ± 1.04 mm and 14.35 ± 2.22 mm, respectively. Conclusion We demonstrated the feasibility of quantifying the distances between bony landmarkers for surgical reconstruction surgery in CAI using high-resolution 3D MRI. Critical relevance statement High-resolution 3D MRI examination may have a guiding effect on the preoperative evaluation of chronic ankle instability patients. Abstract Computationally derived volcano curve has become the gold standard in catalysis, whose practical application usually relies on empirical interpretations of composition or size effects by the identical active site assumption. Here, we present a proof-of-concept study on disclosing both the support- and adsorbate-induced restructuring of Pt-Co bimetallic catalysts, and the related interplays among different interfacial sites to propose the synergy-dependent volcano curves. Multiple characterizations, isotopic kinetic investigations, and multiscale simulations unravel that the progressive incorporation of Co into Pt catalysts, driven by strong Pt-C bonding (metal-support interfaces) and Co-O bonding (metal-adsorbate interfaces), initiates the formation of Pt-rich alloys accompanied by isolated Co species, then Co segregation to epitaxial CoOx overlayers and adjacent Co3O4 clusters, and ultimately structural collapse into amorphous alloys. Accordingly, three distinct synergies, involving lattice oxygen redox from Pt-Co alloy/Co3O4 clusters, dual-active sites engineering via Pt-rich alloy/CoOx overlayer, and electron coupling within exposed alloy, are identified and quantified for CO oxidation (gas-phase), ammonia borane hydrolysis (liquid-phase), and hydrogen evolution reaction (electrocatalysis), respectively. The resultant synergy-dependent volcano curves represent an advancement over traditional composition-/size-dependent ones, serving as a bridge between theoretical models and experimental observations in bimetallic catalysis.

Abstract Catalytic activity of metal particles is reported to originate from the appearance of nonmetallic states, but conductive metallic particles, as an electron reservoir, should render electron delivery between reactants more favorably so as to have higher activity. We present that metallic rhodium particle catalysts are highly active in the low-temperature oxidation of carbon monoxide, whereas nonmetallic rhodium clusters or monoatoms on alumina remain catalytically inert. Experimental and theoretical results evidence the presence of electronic communications in between vertex atom active sites of individual metallic particles in the reaction. The electronic communications dramatically lower apparent activation energies via coupling two electrochemical-like half-reactions occurring on different active sites, which enable the metallic particles to show turnover frequencies at least four orders of magnitude higher than the nonmetallic clusters or monoatoms. Similar results are found for other metallic particle catalysts, implying the importance of electronic communications between active sites in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract Ancient buildings possess significant artistic and cultural value. The digitization of these structures is a crucial aspect of their restoration, providing foundational data for subsequent stress and health analyses. However, creating accurate models of ancient buildings is a challenging endeavor, even for experienced researchers, especially when dealing with a large number of structures. A pressing issue that needs addressing is how to quickly obtain accurate models of ancient buildings while ensuring both precision and efficiency. Currently, one of the more precise methods for reconstructing models of ancient buildings involves the use of scanned point clouds and manual reconstruction through modeling software. However, this method suffers from poor accuracy and low efficiency, making the modeling process complex and time-consuming. In this article, we will refer to the model generated from the point cloud of real components as the "current state model", and the unforced mesh model of the ancient building as the "standard model". An algorithm is proposed to construct the current state model of ancient buildings by guiding the deformation of the unforced standard model using the scanned point cloud model. First, this paper designs an automatic modeling method for ancient building components as the foundational data before deformation, addressing the issue of low modeling efficiency for ancient buildings. Second, it proposes a method for automatically calculating deformation control point pairs based on the characteristics of ancient buildings, solving the problem of manually locating control points. Finally, the proposed adaptive weight Laplacian deformation algorithm is applied to deform the standard model into the current state model.

Purpose: Explore the causal relationship between the gut microbiota and erectile dysfunction (ED) at phylum, class, order, family, and genus levels, and identify specific pathogenic bacteria that may be associated with the onset and progression of ED. Materials and Methods: The genetic variation data of 196 human gut microbiota incorporated in our study came from the human gut microbiome Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) dataset released by the MiBioGen Consortium. The GWAS statistics for ED were extracted from one study by Bovijn et al., which included 223,805 participants of European ancestry, of whom 6,175 were diagnosed with ED. Subsequently, Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was carried out to explore whether a causal relationship exists between the gut microbiota and ED. Additionally, bidirectional MR analysis was performed to examine the directionality of the causal relationship. Results: Through MR analysis, we found that family Lachnospiraceae (odds ratio [OR]: 1.27, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05–1.52, p=0.01) and its subclass genus LachnospiraceaeNC2004 group (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.01–1.37, p=0.04) are associated with a higher risk of ED. In addition, genus Oscillibacter (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.02–1.35, p=0.03), genus Senegalimassilia (OR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.06–1.64, p=0.01) and genus Tyzzerella3 (OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.02–1.27, p=0.02) also increase the risk of ED. In contrast, the inverse variance weighted estimate of genus RuminococcaceaeUCG013 (OR: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.61–0.96, p=0.02) suggests that it has a protective effect against the occurrence of ED. Conclusions: This study preliminarily identified 6 bacterial taxa that may have a causal relationship with ED, including family Lachnospiraceae, genus Lachnospiraceae NC2004 group, Oscillibacter, Senegalimassilia, Tyzzerella 3 and Ruminococcaceae UCG013. These identified important bacterial taxa may serve as candidates for microbiome intervention in future ED clinical trials.

Abstract Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most common bacterial infections in the world, and its key virulence component CagA is the leading cause of gastric cancer. Mitophagy is a form of selective autophagy that eliminates damaged mitochondria and is essential for some viruses and bacteria to evade the immune system. However, the mechanisms by which CagA mediates H. pylori-induced mitophagy and NLRP3 inflammasome activation remain elusive. In this study, we reported that H. pylori primarily uses its CagA to induce mitochondrial oxidative damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, dynamic imbalance, and to block autophagic flux. Inhibition of mitophagy led to an increase in NLRP3 inflammasome activation and apoptosis and a decrease in the viability of H. pylori-infected cells. Our findings suggested that H. pylori induces mitochondrial dysfunction and mitophagy primarily via CagA. It reduces NLRP3 inflammasome activation to evade host immune surveillance and increases the survival and viability of infected cells, potentially leading to gastric cancer initiation and development. Our findings provide new insights into the pathogenesis of H. pylori-induced gastric cancer, and inhibition of mitophagy may be one of the novel techniques for the prevention and treatment of this disease.

Abstract Background To investigate the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components with sarcopenia, and to explore the extent to which insulin resistance (IR) mediates this association, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods We analyzed cross-sectional data from 15,779 adults in the NHANES from 1999 to 2006 and 2011–2018. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the odds ratios (ORs) between MetS, its components, the number of MetS components, and sarcopenia. Mediation analysis was performed to explore the role of the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in MetS and its components-induced sarcopenia. Result In the fully adjusted model, MetS increased the prevalence of sarcopenia by 1.96-fold (95% CI: 1.73–2.22). Among the individual components, central obesity, hypertension, and hyperglycemia were associated with an increased prevalence of sarcopenia. Sarcopenia prevalence also increased linearly with the number of MetS components, with the highest prevalence observed in the presence of all five components (OR: 3.80, 95% CI: 2.79–5.16). Sex-stratified analysis showed that the prevalence of MetS for sarcopenia was higher in males than females. The mediating effects of HOMA-IR on the association between MetS and its components (central obesity, hypertension, and hyperglycemia) with sarcopenia were significant, with mediation effects of 51.7%, 30.7%, 33.2%, and 79.1%, respectively. There was no significant direct association between hyperglycemia and sarcopenia beyond the HOMA-IR pathway. Conclusion MetS and its individual components, excluding hypertriglyceridemia and low high density lipoprotein cholesterol, were associated with a higher prevalence of sarcopenia, especially in males. This association was partially or fully mediated by IR.

Abstract The electrocatalytic valorization of polyethylene terephthalate-derived ethylene glycol to valuable glycolic acid offers considerable economic and environmental benefits. However, conventional methods face scalability issues due to rapid activity decay of noble metal electrocatalysts. We demonstrate that a dynamic potential cycling approach, which alternates the electrode potential between oxidizing and reducing values, significantly mitigates surface deactivation of noble metals during electrochemical oxidation of ethylene glycol. This method enhances catalyst activity by 20 times compared to a constant-potential approach, maintaining this performance for up to 60 h with minimal deactivation. In situ Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy show that this effectiveness results from efficient removal of surface oxide during the reaction. The strategy is applicable to polyethylene terephthalate hydrolysates and various noble metals, such as palladium, gold, and platinum, with palladium showing a high conversion rate in recent studies. Our approach offers an efficient and durable method for electrochemical upcycling of biomass-derived compounds.

Abstract Ferroptosis is a promising strategy for cancer therapy, with numerous inhibitors of its braking axes under investigation as potential drugs. However, few studies have explored the potential of activating the driving axes to induce ferroptosis. Herein, phosphatidylcholine peroxide decorating liposomes (LIPPCPO) are synthesized to induce ferroptosis by targeting divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1). LIPPCPO is found to boost lysosomal Fe2+ efflux by inducing cysteinylation of lysosomal DMT1, resulting in glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) suppression, glutathione depletion and ferroptosis in breast cancer cells and xenografts. Importantly, LIPPCPO induced ferroptotic cell death is independent of acquired resistance to radiation, chemotherapy, or targeted agents in 11 cancer cell lines. Furthermore, a strong synergistic ferroptosis effect is observed between LIPPCPO and an FDA-approved drug, artesunate, as well as X rays. The formula of LIPPCPO encapsulating artesunate significantly inhibits tumor growth and metastasis and improves the survival rate of breast cancer-bearing female mice. These findings provide a distinct strategy for inducing ferroptosis and highlight the potential of LIPPCPO as a vector to synergize the therapeutic effects of conventional ferroptosis inducers.

BackgroundThe respiratory toxicity of inhaled polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) has been extensively studied since the humidifier disinfectant incident. However, the impacts of inhalation of PHMG on the immune system are not comprehensively studied yet. ObjectiveTo explore the effects of inhalation of PHMG disinfectant aerosol on major immune organs and immune cells in mice. MethodsThirty male C57BL/6J mice (6-8 weeks old) were randomly divided into three groups: control, low-dose (0.1 mg·m−3 PHMG), and high-dose (1.0 mg·m−3 PHMG), with ten mice in each group. The mice were administered by oral-nasal inhalation of PHMG aerosol for 4 h per day, 5 d per week for 4 weeks consecutively. After designed treatment, venous blood was collected from the inner canthus of the eyes of mice and peripheral hematological indicators were measured with a blood analyzer. Then the mice were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and the lung, thymus, spleen, and femur were isolated. Lung, thymus, and spleen were weighed and organ coefficients were calculated, and single cell suspensions of thymus, spleen, and bone marrow were prepared to analyze lymphocytes phenotypes and proportions by flow cytometry. ResultsThe body weight of mice in the high-dose group was lower than that of mice in the control group (P0.05). Leukocyte count [(1.49±0.22)×109·L−1], lymphocyte count [(0.96±0.36)×109·L−1] and its proportion [(63.13±14.96)%] in the peripheral blood of mice in the high-dose group were lower than those in the control group [(2.69±0.25)×109·L−1, (2.33±0.28)×109·L−1, and (86.23±3.40)%, respectively] (P

Abstract In recent years, with the development of 3D digitization of cultural relics, most cultural sites contain a large number of fine 3D data of cultural relics, especially complex geometric objects such as painted cultural relics. At present, how to automatically extract surface damage information from the fine 3D color model of painted cultural relics and avoid the loss of accuracy caused by reducing the dimension using conventional methods is an urgentproblem. In view of the above issues, this paper proposes an automatic and high-precision extraction method for cultural relics surface shedding diseases based on 3D fine data. First, this paper designs a 2D and 3D integrated data conversion model based on OpenSceneGraph, a 3D engine, which performs mutual conversion between 3D color model textures and 2D images. Second, this paper proposes a simple linear iterative clustering segmentation algorithm with an adaptive k value, which solves the problem of setting the superpixel k value and improves the accuracy of image segmentation. Finally, through the 2D and 3D integrated models, the disease is statistically analyzed and labeled on the 3D model. Experiments show that for painted plastic objects with complex surfaces, the disease extraction method based on the 3D fine model proposed in this paper has improved geometric accuracy compared with the current popular orthophoto extraction method, and the disease investigation is more comprehensive. Compared with the current 3D manual extraction method in commercial software, this method greatly improves the efficiency of disease extraction while ensuring extraction accuracy. The research method of this paper activates many existing 3D fine data of cultural protection units and converts conventional 2D data mining and analysis into 3D, which is more in line with the scientific utilization of data in terms of accuracy and efficiency and has certain scientific research value, leading value and practical significance.

Abstract Developing high-performance Pt-based catalysts with low Pt loading is crucial but challenging for CO oxidation at temperatures below 100 °C. Herein, we report a Pt-based catalyst with only a 0.15 wt% Pt loading, which consists of Pt–Ti intermetallic single-atom alloy (ISAA) and Pt nanoparticles (NP) co-supported on a defective TiO2 support, achieving a record high turnover frequency of 11.59 s–1 at 80 °C and complete conversion of CO at 120 °C. This is because the coexistence of Pt–Ti ISAA and Pt NP significantly alleviates the competitive adsorption of CO and O2, enhancing the activation of O2. Furthermore, Pt single atom sites are stabilized by Pt–Ti ISAA, resulting in distortion of the TiO2 lattice within Pt–Ti ISAA. This distortion activates the neighboring surface lattice oxygen, allowing for the simultaneous occurrence of the Mars-van Krevelen and Langmuir–Hinshelwood reaction paths at low temperatures.

Abstract It is of great significance to develop a novel approach to treat bacterial infections, as the frequent misuse of antibiotics leads to the serious problem of bacterial resistance. This study proposed antibiotic-free antibacterial nanoparticles for eliminating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) based on a multi-model synergistic antibacterial ability of chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photothermal effect, and innate immunomodulation. Specifically, a polydopamine (PDA) layer coated and Ag nanoparticles loaded core-shell structure Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PDA-Ag) is prepared. The Fe3O4 catalyzes H2O2 present in acidic microenvironment of bacterial infection into more toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) and synergizes with the released Ag ions to exert a stronger bactericidal capacity, which can be augmented by photothermal action of PDA triggered by near-infrared light and loosen the biofilm by photothermal action to promote the penetration of ROS and Ag ion into the biofilm, result in disrupting biofilm structure along with killing encapsulated bacteria. Furthermore, Fe3O4@PDA-Ag exerts indirect antibacterial effects by promoting M1 macrophage polarizing. Animal models demonstrated that Fe3O4@PDA-Ag effectively controlled MRSA-induced infections through photothermal enhanced CDT, Ag+ releasing, and macrophage-mediated bactericidal properties. The acid-triggered antibacterial nanoparticles are expected to combat drug-resistant bacteria infection. Graphical abstract

Abstract Background To provide reference for clinical development of ADCs in the industry, we analyzed the landscape and characteristics of clinical trials about antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). Method Clinical trials to study ADCs used for the pharmacotherapy of cancers initiated by the sponsor were searched in the Cite line Pharma Intelligence (Trialtrove database), and the landscape and characteristics of these clinical trials were analyzed from multiple perspectives, such as the number, phases, status, indications, and targets of the clinical trials. Result As of December 31, 2022, a total of 431 clinical trials have been initiated to study ADCs used for the pharmacotherapy of cancers, and the number of the last 10 years was 5.5 times as large as the first 11 years. These clinical trials involved 47 indications, including breast cancer, lymphoma (lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s and lymphoma, Hodgkin’s), unspecified solid tumor, bladder cancer and lung cancer (lung, non-small cell cancer and lung, small cell cancer). As for each of these five indications, 50 + clinical trials have been carried out, accounting for as high as 48.50% (454/936). ADCs involve 38 targets, which are relatively concentrated. Among them, ERBB2 (HER2) and TNFRSF8 (CD30) involve in 100 + registered clinical trials, and TNFRSF17 (BCMA), NECTIN4 and CD19 in 10 + trials. The clinical trials for these five targets account for 79.02% (354/448) of the total number. Up to 93.97% (405/431) of these clinical trials explored the correlation between biomarkers and efficacy. Up to 45.91% (292/636) of Lots (lines of treatment) applied in the clinical trials were the second line. Until December 31, 2022, 54.52% (235/431) of the clinical trials have been completed or terminated. Conclusion ADCs are a hotspot of research and development in oncology clinical trials, but the indications, targets, phases, and Lot that have been registered are seemingly relatively concentrated at present. This study provides a comprehensive analysis which can assist researchers/developer quickly grasp relevant knowledge to assess a product and also providing new clues and ideas for future research.

Abstract Background Esophageal carcinoma (EC) and gastric cardiac adenocarcinoma (GCA) have high incidence rates in the Chaoshan region of South China. Multifocal esophageal and cardiac cancer (MECC) is commonly observed in this region in clinical practice. However, the genomic characteristics of MECC remains unclear. Materials and methods In this study, a total of 2123 clinical samples of EC and GCA were analyzed to determine the frequency of multifocal tumors, as well as their occurrence sites and pathological types. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to model the relationship between age, sex, and tumor state concerning survival in our analysis of the cohort of 541 patients with available follow-up data. We performed whole-genome sequencing on 20 tumor foci and 10 normal samples from 10 MECC patients to infer clonal structure on 6 MECC patients to explore genome characteristics. The principal component analysis (PCA) based method can roughly find the posture relationship between the two point clouds. Using z-level dynamic hierarchical, the ICP registration can accurately find the posture between these two clouds. The final registration maximum distance error is 0.03 mm, which is smaller than robot machining error. Secondly, the clear aligner machining process is conducted to verify the registration effectiveness. Before machining, the path is generated based on the well registered gingival curve. After full registration, the tool path is calculated by establishing a local coordinate system between the workpiece and the tool to avoid interference. This path is calculated and generated as an executable program for ABB industrial robots. Finally, the robot was used for flexible cutting of clear aligners and was able to extract products, ensuring the effectiveness of the proposed research. This method can effectively solve the limitations of traditional milling path planning under such complex conditions.

Abstract In situ exploration of the dynamic structure evolution of catalysts plays a key role in revealing reaction mechanisms and designing efficient catalysts. In this work, PtCu/MgO catalysts, synthesized via the co-impregnation method, outperforms monometallic Pt/MgO and Cu/MgO. Utilizing quasi/in-situ characterization techniques, it is discovered that there is an obvious structural evolution over PtCu/MgO from Pt x Cu y O z oxide cluster to PtCu alloy with surface CuO x species under different redox and CO oxidation reaction conditions. The synergistic effect between PtCu alloy and CuO x species enables good CO oxidation activity through the regulation of CO adsorption and O2 dissociation. At low temperatures, CO oxidation is predominantly catalyzed by surface CuO x species via the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, in which CuO x can provide abundant active oxygen species. As the reaction temperature increases, both surface CuO x species and PtCu alloy collaborate to activate gaseous oxygen, facilitating CO oxidation mainly through the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism.

Background: Face image animation generates a synthetic human face video that harmoniously integrates the identity derived from the source image and facial motion obtained from the driving video. This technology could be beneficial in multiple medical fields, such as diagnosis and privacy protection. Previous studies on face animation often relied on a single source image to generate an output video. With a significant pose difference between the source image and the driving frame, the quality of the generated video is likely to be suboptimal because the source image may not provide sufficient features for the warped feature map. Methods: In this study, we propose a novel face-animation scheme based on multiple sources and perspective alignment to address these issues. We first introduce a multiple-source sampling and selection module to screen the optimal source image set from the provided driving video. We then propose an inter-frame interpolation and alignment module to further eliminate the misalignment between the selected source image and the driving frame. Conclusions: The proposed method exhibits superior performance in terms of objective metrics and visual quality in large-angle animation scenes compared to other state-of-the-art face animation methods. It indicates the effectiveness of the proposed method in addressing the distortion issues in large-angle animation.

Persistent inflammatory responses often occur when bacteria and other microorganisms frequently invade and colonize open wounds and eventually result in the formation of chronic wounds. Therefore, achieving real-time detection of invasive bacteria accurately and promptly is essential for efficient wound management and accelerating the healing process. Recently, flexible wearable sensors have garnered significant attention, especially those designed for monitoring real-time biophysical or biochemical signals in wound sites in a minimally invasive manner. They provide more precise and continuous monitoring data, making them as emerging tools for clinical diagnostics. In this review, we first discuss the species and community distribution of different types of bacteria in chronic wounds. Next, we introduce currently developed techniques for detecting bacteria at wound sites. Following that, we discuss the recent progress and unresolved issues of various flexible wearable sensors in detecting bacteria at wound sites. We believe that this review can provide meaningful guidance for the development of flexible wearable sensors for bacteria detection.

Abstract Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) hyperactivation has been established as an oncogenic driver in a variety of human cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, despite massive efforts, no specific therapy is currently available to target NRF2 hyperactivation. Here, we identify peptidylprolyl isomerase A (PPIA) is required for NRF2 protein stability. Ablation of PPIA promotes NRF2 protein degradation and blocks NRF2-driven growth in NSCLC cells. Mechanistically, PPIA physically binds to NRF2 and blocks the access of ubiquitin/Kelch Like ECH Associated Protein 1 (KEAP1) to NRF2, thus preventing ubiquitin-mediated degradation. Our X-ray co-crystal structure reveals that PPIA directly interacts with a NRF2 interdomain linker via a trans-proline 174-harboring hydrophobic sequence. We further demonstrate that an FDA-approved drug, cyclosporin A (CsA), impairs the interaction of NRF2 with PPIA, inducing NRF2 ubiquitination and degradation. Interestingly, CsA interrupts glutamine metabolism mediated by the NRF2/KLF5/SLC1A5 pathway, consequently suppressing the growth of NRF2-hyperactivated NSCLC cells. CsA and a glutaminase inhibitor combination therapy significantly retard tumor progression in NSCLC patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models with NRF2 hyperactivation. Our study demonstrates that targeting NRF2 protein stability is an actionable therapeutic approach to treat NRF2-hyperactivated NSCLC.

Photovoltaic (PV)-storage integrated 5G base station (BS) can participate in demand response on a large scale, conduct electricity transaction and provide auxiliary services, thus reducing the high electricity consumption of 5G BSs and increasing the flexibility resource capacity of the distribution network. However, the flexible resource regulation of PV-storage integrated 5G BSs still faces problems such as many regulators, ignored PV-load uncertainty, and poor adaptability of existing regulatory frameworks and scheduling methods, which leads to greater security operation risks in resource regulation decisions and affects the exploitation of the 5G BSs scheduling potential. Aiming at the above problems, this paper proposes an aggregated regulation and coordinated scheduling method of PV-storage integrated 5G BSs considering PV-load uncertainty. Firstly, a hierarchical cluster-cooperative aggregated regulation framework for the scale PV-storage integrated 5G BSs is established, and a regional communication operator (RCO) schedulable capability model and an information gap decision theory (IGDT) based PV-load uncertainty model are built. Next, a two-stage joint optimization problem is proposed for maximizing the RCO income while reducing the BS cluster operation cost. Then, the first-stage day-ahead transaction optimization problem in the electricity market is solved, and the reliable operation planning and economic operation planning strategies are proposed based on IGDT to adapt to the regulation demand under different uncertainty risks; the second-stage BS cluster real-time operation optimization problem is solved based on the adaptive consensus algorithm considering scheduling preferences (ACSP), achieving distributed real-time coordinated scheduling of multiple agents in the BS cluster. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation examples, which show that the aggregated regulation and coordinated scheduling of PV-storage integrated 5G BSs can achieve mutual benefits for the distribution network and communication operators.

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) aims at decreasing the response time and energy consumption of running mobile applications by offloading the tasks of mobile devices (MDs) to the MEC servers located at the edge of the network. The demands are multi-attribute, where the distances between MDs and access points lead to differences in required resources and transmission energy consumption. Unfortunately, the existing works have not considered both task allocation and energy consumption problems. Motivated by this, this paper considers the problem of task allocation with multi-attributes, where the problem consists of the winner determination and offloading decision problems. First, the problem is formulated as the auction-based model to provide flexible service. Then, a randomized mechanism is designed and is truthful in expectation. This drives the system into an equilibrium where no MD has incentives to increase the utility by declaring an untrue value. In addition, an approximation algorithm is proposed to minimize remote energy consumption and is a polynomial-time approximation scheme. Therefore, it achieves a tradeoff between optimality loss and time complexity. Simulation results reveal that the proposed mechanism gets the near-optimal allocation. Furthermore, compared with the baseline methods, the proposed mechanism can effectively increase social welfare and bring higher revenue to edge server providers.

Abstract Biomass plays a crucial role in the low‐carbon energy transition, with a projected contribution of 18.7% to the global energy supply by 2050. However, biofuel combustion has been a notable source of toxic mercury emissions, yet the future trends and distribution of the emissions remain inadequately understood. Here, we projected biofuel combustion under various Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) using the Global Change Assessment Model and assessed associated mercury emissions in cooking, heating, and power generation over 2020–2050, aligning with the carbon neutrality target. Our analysis reveals that global biofuel mercury emissions are projected to be 9.90–18.40 tons by 2050, compared to the annual emissions of 13.89 tons in 2020. Notably, a substantial increase in emissions from power generation is expected, escalating from 0.57 tons in 2020 to 4.69–8.27 tons by 2050, with China and Southeast Asia emerging as primary contributors. Conversely, mercury emissions from cooking and heating are expected to decrease from 13.32 tons in 2020 to 4.40–11.53 tons by 2050, except in Africa under SSP2, where the emissions may increase from 5.91 to 6.69 tons. Our findings provide a scientific basis for policies aimed at achieving carbon neutrality targets while adhering to the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

With the proliferation of human activities, a series of marine ecological and environmental problems have arisen. Judicial application is important to test legislative achievements, explore judicial difficulties, and examine the compliance with the law. There is no case law in China and the impact of judicial decisions on the protection of marine environment is therefore indirect. Judicial decisions can reflect the implementation of the Marine Environmental Protection Law and play a crucial role in improving the marine environmental protection. An analysis of 2,443 cases related to marine environmental protection heard by courts at all levels across China from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2023 has been conducted. The findings indicate an overall downward trend in cases related to marine environmental protection, suggesting positive governance outcomes to some extent. However, certain problems remain in the judicial protection of marine environment. Therefore, legislative efficiency should be properly increased and an independent crime for marine environmental pollution should be introduced to further clarify the legal bases for marine environmental protection. The intelligent trial assistance technology should also be applied to shorten trial time, improve trial efficiency, and unify judicial rules. The People’s Courts should play an active role in the provision of evidence and specific evidentiary burden provisions for different types of marine environmental pollutions should be proposed. The data sharing channels between various systems should be facilitated and the functionality for case referral should be developed for the coordination of administrative enforcement and criminal justice within a unified administrative enforcement platform.

BackgroundIn basketball training, self-evaluation plays a crucial role in the decision-making and execution of movements of players. The self-evaluation of players is influenced by their perception of own basketball ability and self-confidence state. This study aimed to explore potential discrepancies between self-confidence levels of players and their decision-making performance, while also characterizing different types of players.MethodData was collected from 20 youth basketball players who participated in a decision-making video task and a self-confidence assessment. Based on data from their self-confidence and decision-making awareness assessment, the K-means cluster analysis was used to categorize the players into different groups. Then, ANOVA and post hoc Scheffe test were conducted to compare these clusters.ResultsThe cluster analysis identified four distinct profiles of players and the results of the ANOVA and post hoc Scheffe tests revealed significant differences between the four clusters. The “High Self-confidence & Low Decision-making Awareness” players might display an overconfident mindset, while the “High Self-confidence & High Decision-making Awareness” players potentially demonstrated the better performance and maintained a consistent and confident attitude. The “Low Self-confidence & High Decision-making Awareness” players appeared to lack confidence and needed to foster greater faith in their abilities. Finally, the “Low Self-confidence & Low Decision-making Awareness” players required a long-term and comprehensive training program to improve their skills.DiscussionThese preliminary findings informed the development of a self-evaluation matrix, designed to help coaches better understand player profiles and design tailored interventions. Moreover, this study contributes on sport calibration and enhances understanding of the behavioral and psychological states of players.

ObjectiveThe incidence of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is increasing annually. This study aims to investigate the therapeutic mechanisms of Yikang Decoction (YKD) in the treatment of PCOS through the integration of GEO datasets, network pharmacology, and dynamic simulation.MethodsActive ingredients of YKD and their targets were collected from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology (TCMSP) platform. Disease-relevant targets for PCOS were retrieved from several databases, including GeneCards, OMIM, PharmGKB, DrugBank, and GEO. The underlying pathways associated with the overlapping targets between YKD and PCOS were identified using Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis. The mechanisms of interaction between the core targets and components were further explored through molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations (MD).Results139 potential active components and 315 targets of YKD were identified. A topological analysis of the PPI network revealed 10 core targets. These targets primarily participated in the regulation of biological processes, including cell metabolism, apoptosis, and cell proliferation. The pathways associated with treating PCOS encompassed PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, Lipid and atherosclerosis, MAPK signaling pathways, and Endocrine resistance signaling pathways. Moreover, molecular docking and MD have been shown to reveal a good binding capacity between active compounds and screening targets.ConclusionThis study systematically investigates the multi-target mechanisms of YKD in the treatment of PCOS, with preliminary verification provided through molecular docking and MD. The findings offer compelling evidence supporting the efficacy of YKD in treating PCOS.

BackgroundInflammation plays a crucial role in cerebrovascular disease (CVD) progression. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an important inflammatory marker, though its diagnostic role in CVD is still under investigation. This study evaluates the relationship between NLR and short-term all-cause mortality in patients with CVD admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).MethodsWe conducted a retrospective study using data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) (v2.2) database, including 4,327 adult ICU-admitted CVD patients. NLR values at admission were analyzed alongside various mortality variables. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models and Kaplan–Meier (K-M) survival curves assessed the relationship between NLR and short-term all-cause mortality. Predictive power, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC) of NLR for short-term mortality were investigated using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis. Additionally, restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves and subgroup analyses were conducted.ResultsAmong the 4,327 patients, 3,600 survived (survival group) and 727 died (non-survival group) within 28 days of admission (mortality rate: 16.8%). Peritoneal adhesions commonly occur following abdominal or pelvic surgery and can cause serious complications. Currently, physical barriers are the primary approach used in clinical practice to prevent adhesion, although their effectiveness is frequently inadequate. In this study, we developed an injectable peptide-loaded hydrogel with multiple functions, including self-fusion, tissue-adhesiveness, anti-inflammation, anti-cell adhesion and anti-angiogenesis. To assess the effectiveness of these hydrogels, which are stabilized by dynamic imine bonds and acetal connections, in preventing postoperative abdominal adhesions, we utilized both a rat abdominal adhesion model and a rat model simulating repeated-injury adhesions. In comparison to the commercially available HA hydrogel, as-prepared hydrogels exhibited significant reductions in inflammation, fibrosis, and angiogenesis, leading to an obvious decrease in peritoneal adhesions. Moreover, this peptide-loaded hydrogel demonstrated an ideal degradation time, maintaining an in vivo viability for about 10 days. We believe this peptide-loaded hydrogel presents a promising solution for the challenging clinical issue of postoperative abdominal adhesions.

Visible light is an important energy source for all living organisms on Earth. Given the importance of visible light, visible light sensors have attracted widespread interest from scientists. With the rapid development of wearable devices, the sensors used in them need to be flexible, stretchable, and lightweight. Herein, an intelligent electrolyte based on spiropyran (SP) that responds to visible light is developed. The reversible change rate in the electrical resistance of an SP/FeCl3·6H2O methyl cyanide (MeCN) aqueous solution under visible light irradiation is as high as 19.26%. Additionally, flexible and conductive fibrous visible light sensors with a core‐sheath structure are prepared using an SP/FeCl3·6H2O MeCN aqueous solution and silicon rubber hollow fibers as the core and outer layers, respectively. These fibrous visible light sensors are then woven into fabrics with multiple functions, such as sensing and locating visible light, reversible photochromism, and thermal management. The fibrous visible light sensors and fabrics prepared in this study have broad development prospects and application potential in the fields of fashion, smart textiles, flexible conductive fibers, flexible fibrous sensors, electronic skins, and wearable devices.

Abstract In higher plants, mature male gametophytes have distinct apertures. After pollination, pollen grains germinate, and a pollen tube grows from the aperture to deliver sperm cells to the embryo sac, completing fertilization. In rice, the pollen aperture has a single-pore structure with a collar-like annulus and a plug-like operculum. A crucial step in aperture development is the formation of aperture plasma membrane protrusion (APMP) at the distal polar region of the microspore during the late tetrad stage. Previous studies identified OsINP1 and OsDAF1 as essential regulators of APMP and pollen aperture formation in rice, but their precise molecular mechanisms remain unclear. We demonstrate that the Poaceae-specific OsSRF8 gene, encoding a STRUBBELIG-receptor family 8 protein, is essential for pollen aperture formation in Oryza sativa. Mutants lacking functional OsSRF8 exhibit defects in APMP and pollen aperture formation, like loss-of-function OsINP1 mutants. OsSRF8 is specifically expressed during early anther development and initially diffusely distributed in the microsporocytes. At the tetrad stage, OsSRF8 is recruited by OsINP1 to the pre-aperture region through direct protein-protein interaction, promoting APMP formation. The OsSRF8-OsINP1 complex then recruits OsDAF1 to the APMP site to co-regulate annulus formation. Our findings provide insights into the mechanisms controlling pollen aperture formation in cereal species.

Abstract As the most popular sport among middle-aged and elderly women in China, square dancing has both physical and psychological benefits for menopausal women. Previous studies have shown that square dance exercises can promote the physical health of older women, but there is a lack of research on the influence of middle-aged and elderly women on mental health and mediating variables. Therefore, this study starts with one of the important indicators of mental health—positive affects, aiming to explore the impact of square dance on the positive emotions of elderly women and further explore the mediating mechanisms involved. We send out The Physical Activity Rating Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Satisfaction With Life Scale to a total of 2311 middle-aged and elderly women. SPSS 23 software and PROCESS were used to perform regression analysis and establish mediation models. Modeling results show square dance exercises could positively predict positive affect through the chain mediating effect of psychological resilience and life satisfaction. The results of this study are of great significance for promoting the extensive participation of middle-aged and elderly women in sports and protecting their mental health.

In this paper, liquid-state fermented sauce mash with salt concentrations of 12% and 18% (w/v) was used as the research object, to explore the effect of gradient heating (15 ℃-20 ℃-25 ℃-30 ℃) on the microbial counting and flavor formation of fermented sauce mash. The results showed that the yeast counts of the low-salt sauce mash sample (TC12) using the gradient heating method was about 1.0 log CFU/g higher than that of the constant temperature (30 ℃) control group (C12) at the end of fermentation, which indicated that the yeasts maintained growth and metabolism for a long time in the gradient heating group. This might be related to the fact that the lower temperature in the early stage of fermentation limited the rapid propagation of yeasts. Among them, the amino nitrogen of the fermented soy sauce from TC12 was as high as 1.14 g/100 g, which met the standard of premium-grade brewed soy sauce in China. At the same time, the content of umami (19.03 g/L) and sweet amino acids (19.32 g/L) in TC12 was high, accounting for about 60% of the total amino acids, presenting a better sweet and savory taste. The volatile compound detection data showed that the content of ethanol, ethyl phenylacetate, ethyl palmitate, 3-(methylthiopropionaldehyde) and benzaldehyde in TC12 was relatively high, and the sample showed an overall sweet-fruity aroma and ester-like aroma. On the other hand, the gradient heating sample of the high-salt group (TC18) contained more guaiacol and methyl maltol, showing a smoky incense and saucy aroma. The sensory evaluation results showed that the low-salt gradient heating fermentation samples TC12 had higher aroma and taste scores, as well as better comprehensive tastes than the constant temperature fermentation samples C12. In summary, the gradient heating method is beneficial to limit the excessive growth of yeast in low-salt (12%) fermented sauce mash in the early stage and maintaining a considerable cell count of yeast in the late stage of fermentation, so that the yeast can continuously ferment and generate more flavor substances and improve the overall flavor of low-salt fermented soy sauce.

Abstract Protein degradation is essential for maintaining protein homeostasis. The ubiquitin‒proteasome system (UPS) and autophagy–lysosome system are the two primary pathways responsible for protein degradation and directly related to cell survival. In malignant tumors, the UPS plays a critical role in managing the excessive protein load caused by cancer cells hyperproliferation. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the dual roles played by the UPS and autolysosome system in colorectal cancer (CRC), elucidating their impact on the initiation and progression of this disease while also highlighting their compensatory relationship. Simultaneously targeting both protein degradation pathways offers new promise for enhancing treatment efficacy against CRC. Additionally, apoptosis is closely linked to ubiquitination and autophagy, and caspases degrade proteins. A thorough comprehension of the interplay between various protein degradation pathways is highly important for clarifying the mechanism underlying the onset and progression of CRC.

Abstract Mask-free multi-photon lithography enables the fabrication of arbitrary nanostructures low cost and more accessible than conventional lithography. A major challenge for multi-photon lithography is to achieve ultra-high precision and desirable lateral resolution due to the inevitable optical diffraction barrier and proximity effect. Here, we show a strategy, light and matter co-confined multi-photon lithography, to overcome the issues via combining photo-inhibition and chemical quenchers. We deeply explore the quenching mechanism and photoinhibition mechanism for light and matter co-confined multiphoton lithography. Besides, mathematical modeling helps us better understand that the synergy of quencher and photo-inhibition can gain a narrowest distribution of free radicals. By using light and matter co-confined multiphoton lithography, we gain a 30 nm critical dimension and 100 nm lateral resolution, which further decrease the gap with conventional lithography.

Abstract With the aging and obesity era, the increasing incidence of diabetes and diabetic complications, especially the non‐healing wounds, imposes a serious economic burden on both patients and society. The complex microenvironments, including hyperglycemia, bacterial infection, ischemia, and nerve damage, lead to the prolonged inflammation and proliferation phase of diabetic wounds. Mesenchymal stem cell‐derived small extracellular vesicles (MSC‐sEVs), which contain a rich variety of therapeutic molecules, have been chased for decades because of their potential roles in cellular communication, tissue regeneration, and drug delivery. As powerful tools for the controlled‐sustained release of sEVs, biocompatible hydrogels have been applied in a wide range of biomedical applications. Herein, we first summarize the pathological features of diabetic wounds, such as angiopathy, neuropathy, and immune cell dysfunction. Then, we discuss the biological properties, therapeutic performance, and stability of pure MSC‐sEVs. After that, we discuss the components, application patterns, and responsiveness of hydrogels. Next, we discuss the loading avenues of MSC‐sEVs into hydrogel, the release behaviors of sEVs from hydrogels, and the influence of the crosslinking method on the hydrogel‐sEV composites. Finally, we provide an overview of the current applications of hydrogels loaded with MSC‐sEVs as a novel cell‐free tissue engineering system in managing diabetic wounds and propose the critical unsolved issues. This review is expected to provide meaningful guidance for developing a novel cell‐free tissue engineering system for diabetic wound management.

BackgroundPrevious studies comparing the efficacy and safety of different treatment regimens for lupus nephritis are scarce. Moreover, confounding factors such as the duration of follow-up were hardly adjusted in those studies, potentially compromising the results and their extents to clinical settings.ObjectiveTo rigorously investigate the efficacy and safety of biologics in patients with lupus nephritis using Bayesian network meta-regression analyses that adjust for the follow-up period, in order to provide more robust evidence for clinicians.MethodsDatabases comprising PubMed, Embase, MedlinePlus, Cochrane Library, Google Scholars, and Scopus were retrieved for eligible articles from inception to February 29, 2024. The primary endpoint was the complete response rate, the secondary endpoint was the partial response rate, the tertiary endpoints were the adverse events, and infection-related adverse events. Napierian Logarithm of hazard ratio (lnHR) and the standard error of lnHR (selnHR) were generated for dichotomous variants by STATA 18.0 MP and then put into Rstudio 4.3.2 to conduct Bayesian network meta-analysis as well as network meta-regression analysis to yield hazard ratio (HR) as pairwise effect size.ResultsTen studies involving 2138 patients and 11 treatment regimens were ultimately included. In the original analysis, for the primary endpoint, compared to the control group, obinutuzumab (22.6 months), abatacept-30mg (20.5 months), abatacept-10mg (17.8 months), and belimumab (23.3 months) demonstrated significant superiority (HR ranged from 1.6 to 2.5), more ever, their significance regarding relative efficacy was correlated with follow up period, namely “time window” (shown in parentheses above). For the secondary endpoint, compared to the control group, obinutuzumab and abatacept-30mg showed conspicuous preponderance (HR ranged from 1.6 to 2.4), “time window” was also detected in abatacept-30mg (20.5 months), whereas obinutuzumab remained consistently obviously effective regardless of the follow-up period (shown in parentheses above). For the tertiary endpoint, there were no differences among active regimens and control.ConclusionsConsidering the efficacy and safety and “time window” phenomenon, we recommend obinutuzumab as the preferred treatment for LN. Certainly, more rigorous head-to-head clinical trials are warranted to validate those findings.

To investigate the supply-demand balance of regional power systems under extreme scenarios, this study employs the high-resolution power optimization model SWITCH-China to simulate the regional heterogeneity and randomness of extreme weather events in detail. Focusing on the five southern provinces, this study explores various impacts on the power generation side and the grid side under scenarios of reduced wind and solar power output, transmission line failures, and combined scenarios, proposing strategies for constructing a new power system. The main conclusions are: the reduction in wind and solar power output significantly affects provinces with a high proportion of these installations, like Guizhou, necessitating other stable power generation forms to compensate. Transmission line failures notably impact provinces like Guangdong, which rely heavily on imported electricity, requiring increased investment in new wind and solar installations and more self-generated power to offset the reduction in imported electricity. The combination of these factors amplifies their individual impacts, leading to the highest carbon reduction and electricity costs. The simulation results of this study are valuable for China’s five southern provinces in coping with extreme scenarios. As these provinces work on building a new power system and gradually retire fossil fuel units, they should expand the number and capacity of inter-provincial high-voltage transmission lines while considering system economics. Additionally, accelerating the deployment of energy storage is crucial for maintaining power system stability.

The stability of soil organic carbon (SOC) is crucial for the global carbon cycle and serves as a key indicator of soil quality and eco-system function. In Karst areas, SOC stability is influenced by unique geological conditions. Studying SOC stability in these regions is significant for understanding regional ecosystem functions and the role of SOC in mitigating global climate change. This review examines the fractions and stability of SOC in Karst areas, analyzing the impacts of key factors such as rocky desertification, land use changes, and vegetation restoration on SOC stability, along with their underlying mechanisms. It also discusses the current challenges and opportunities in SOC stability. This review aims to guide the development of effective ecological rehabilitation and management strategies for degraded ecosystems in Karst areas.

IntroductionThe curriculum for a da Vinci surgeon in gynecology requires special training before a surgeon performs their first independent case, but standardized, objective assessments of a trainee’s workflow or skills learned during clinical cases are lacking. This pilot study presents a methodology to evaluate intraoperative surgeon behavior in hysterectomy cases through standardized surgical step segmentation paired with objective performance indicators (OPIs) calculated directly from robotic data streams. This method can provide individual case analysis in a truly objective capacity.Materials and methodsSurgical data from six robot-assisted total laparoscopic hysterectomies (rTLH) performed by two experienced surgeons was collected prospectively using an Intuitive Data Recorder. Each rTLH video was annotated and segmented into specific, functional surgical steps based on the recorded video. Once annotated, OPIs were compared through workflow analysis and across surgeons during two critical surgical steps: colpotomy and vaginal cuff closure.ResultsThrough visualization of the individual steps over time, we observe workflow consistencies and variabilities across individual surgeons of a similar experience level at the same hospital, creating unique surgeon behavior signatures across each surgical case. Objective: In clinical practice, there are few effective biomarkers for identifying non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of this study is to investigate the diagnostic value of γ-glutamyl transpeptidase to platelet ratio (GPR) combined with triglyceride (TG) in NAFLD. Methods: A total of 14,415 individuals participated in the annual physical examination. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate the exposure factors associated with NAFLD. Spearman's analysis was performed to assess the correlation among the exposure factors of NAFLD. Furthermore, the diagnostic efficacy of the combination of GPR and TG in NAFLD was analyzed using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). BackgroundRecent epidemiological studies have indicated a correlation between platelet indices and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), yet the causality between them remains unclear. To explore the causal relationship between four platelet indices and PAH, with the aim of providing a theoretical basis for clinical prevention and treatment.MethodsSingle-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with platelet-related traits were selected as exposure factors from published genome-wide association studies (GWAS), including: platelet count (PLT), plateletcrit (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW). Summary-level data for PAH were obtained from the FinnGen study (248 cases and 289,117 controls). Two-sample and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were conducted to assess the causal relationship between exposure factors and the risk of outcomes. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was utilized as the primary MR analysis approach, supplemented by weighted median, mode-based estimation, MR-Egger regression, and the MR Pleiotropy Residual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO) test to detect and adjust for pleiotropy, ensuring the reliability of the results through sensitivity analysis.Results(1) The IVW results from the two-sample MR analysis showed a positive causal association between PLT and the risk of developing PAH [(OR = 1.649, 95%CI: 1.206–2.256, P = 0.0017)], with the sensitivity analysis confirming the robustness of the causal relationship. The MR-Egger intercept analysis did not detect potential pleiotropy (P = 0.879). (2) The MVMR results showed no statistically significant causal relationship between these four markers and the risk of developing PAH. After adjusting for collinearity, a direct positive causal association was observed between PLT and the risk of developing PAH (OR = 1.525, 95%CI: 1.063–2.189, P = 0.022).ConclusionThe positive correlation between PLT and the risk of PAH suggests that correcting elevated platelet levels may reduce the risk of developing PAH.

As a novel economic form, the digital economy plays an important role in promoting urban low-carbon sustainable development (LCSD). Based on panel data from 270 cities in China from 2011 to 2021, this study used principal component analysis and the global entropy weight method to calculate the level of digital economy development and LCSD as well as to empirically discuss any correlated effects and mechanisms. The research showed that the digital economy has significantly promoted urban LCSD and has become an important source for promoting green low-carbon development. The digital economy can indirectly promote LCSD by accelerating industrial structure upgrading and promoting technological innovation; Moreover, this promotion can show significant threshold characteristics with these factors. When industrial structure upgrading and technological innovation reach a certain threshold, the digital economy can further enhance urban LCSD. The promotion of the digital economy is positively influenced by marketization level and environmental regulation, and it exhibits distinct regional characteristics. During the critical period of economic development and transformation, the government must continuously promote the development of the digital economy, fully release its dividends on LCSD, and implement a differentiated digital development strategy to promote low-carbon economic development according to local conditions.

Abstract The defects in perovskite film can cause charge carrier trapping which shortens carrier lifetime and diffusion length. So defects passivation has become promising for the perovskite studies. However, how defects disturb the carrier transport and how the passivating affects the carrier transport in CsPbBr3 are still unclear. Here the carrier dynamics and diffusion processes of CsPbBr3 and LiBr passivated CsPbBr3 films are investigated by using transient absorption spectroscopy and transient absorption microscopy. It's found that there is a fast hot carrier trapping process with the above bandgap excitation, and the hot carrier trapping would decrease the population of cold carriers which are diffusible, then lower the carrier diffusion constant. It's proved that LiBr can passivate the defect and lower the trapping probability of hot carriers, thus improve the carrier diffusion rate. The finding demonstrates the influence of hot carrier trapping to the carrier diffusion in CsPbBr3 film.

Aims: Vascular calcification is strongly linked to the development of major adverse cardiovascular events, but effective treatments are lacking. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are an emerging category of oral hypoglycemic drugs that have displayed marked effects on metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, including recently reported vascular medial calcification. However, the roles and underlying mechanisms of SGLT2 inhibitors in vascular calcification have not been fully elucidated. Thus, we aimed to further determine whether SGLT2 inhibitors protect against vascular calcification and to investigate the mechanisms involved. Methods and results: A computed tomography angiography investigation of coronary arteries from 1554 patients with type 2 diabetes revealed that SGLT2 inhibitor use was correlated with a lower Agatston calcification score. In the vitamin D3 overdose, 5/6 nephrectomy chronic kidney disease-induced medial calcification and Western diet-induced atherosclerotic intimal calcification models, dapagliflozin (DAPA) substantially alleviated vascular calcification in the aorta. Furthermore, we showed that DAPA reduced vascular calcification via Runx2-dependent osteogenic transdifferentiation in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Transcriptome profiling revealed that thioredoxin domain containing 5 (TXNDC5) was involved in the attenuation of vascular calcification by DAPA. Rescue experiments showed that DAPA-induced TXNDC5 downregulation in VSMCs blocked the protective effect on vascular calcification. Furthermore, TXNDC5 downregulation disrupted protein folding-dependent Runx2 stability and promoted subsequent proteasomal degradation. Moreover, DAPA downregulated TXNDC5 expression via amelioration of oxidative stress and ATF6-dependent endoplasmic reticulum stress. Consistently, the class effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on vascular calcification were validated with empagliflozin in intimal and medial calcification models. Conclusions: SGLT2 inhibitors ameliorate vascular calcification through blocking endoplasmic reticulum stress-dependent TXNDC5 upregulation and promoting subsequent Runx2 proteasomal degradation, suggesting that SGLT2 inhibitors are potentially beneficial for vascular calcification treatment and prevention.

Summary: Microorganisms are critical to the stability of aquatic environments, and understanding the ecological mechanisms of microbial community is essential. However, the distinctions and linkages across biogeographic patterns, ecological processes, and formation mechanisms of microbes in rivers and lakes remain unknown. Accordingly, microbiome-centric analysis was conducted in rivers and lakes in the Yangtze River watershed. Results revealed significant differences in the structure and diversity of microbial communities between rivers and lakes, with rivers showing higher diversity. Lakes exhibited lower community stability, despite higher species interactions. Although deterministic processes dominated microbial community assembly both in rivers and lakes, higher stochastic processes of rare and abundant taxa exhibited in rivers. Spatial factors influenced river microbial community, while environmental factors drove differences in the lake bacterial community. This study deepened the understanding of microbial biogeography and formation mechanisms in large watershed rivers and lakes, highlighting distinct community aggregation patterns between river and lake microorganisms.
