Recent experimental advances in the field of cold-atom cavity QED provide a powerful tool for exploring non-equilibrium correlated quantum phenomena beyond conventional condensed-matter scenarios. We present the dynamical phase diagram of a driven Bose-Einstein condensate coupled with the light field of a cavity, with a transverse driving field red-detuned from atomic resonance. We identify regions in parameter space showing dynamical instabilities in the form of limit cycles, which evolve into chaotic behavior in the strong driving limit. Such limit cycles originate from the interplay between cavity dissipation and atom-induced resonance frequency shift, which modifies the phase of cavity mode and gives excessive negative feedback on the atomic density modulation, leading to instabilities of the superradiant scattering. We find interesting merging of the limit cycles related by a $Z_2$ symmetry, and identify a new type of limit cycle formed by purely atomic excitations. The higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) is a new type of topological system which has special bulk-edge correspondence compared with conventional topological insulators. In this work, we propose a scheme to realize Floquet HOTI with ultracold atoms in optical lattices. With the combination of periodically spin-dependent driving of the superlattices and a long-range coupling term, a Floquet second-order topological insulator with four zero-energy corner states emerges, whose Wannier bands are gapless and exhibit interesting bulk topology. Furthermore, the nearest-neighbor anisotropic coupling term also induced other intriguing topological phenomena, e.g. non-topologically protected corner states and topological semimetal for two different types of lattice structures respectively. Our scheme may give insight into the construction of different types of higher-order topological insulators in synthetic systems. It also provides an experimentally feasible platform to research the relations between different types of topological states and may have a wide range of applications in future.

Triply degenerate points (TDPs), which correspond to new types of topological semimetals, can support novel quasiparticles possessing effective integer spins while preserving Fermi statistics. Here by mapping the momentum space to the parameter space of a three-level system in a trapped ion, we experimentally explore the transitions between different types of TDPs driven by spin-tensor--momentum couplings. We observe the phase transitions between TDPs with different topological charges by measuring the Berry flux on a loop surrounding the gap-closing lines, and the jump of the Berry flux gives the jump of the topological charge (up to a $2\pi$ factor) across the transitions. For the Berry flux measurement, we employ a new method by examining the geometric rotations of both spin vectors and tensors, which lead to a generalized solid angle equal to the Berry flux. The controllability of multi-level ion offers a versatile platform to study high-spin physics and our work paves the way to explore novel topological phenomena therein., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

The emergence of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry has greatly enriched our study of symmetry-enabled non-Hermitian physics, but the realization of quantum $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry faces an intrinsic issue of unavoidable symmetry-breaking Langevin noises. Here we construct a quantum pseudo-anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ (pseudo-$\mathcal{APT}$) symmetry in a two-mode bosonic system without involving Langevin noises. We show that the spontaneous pseudo-$\mathcal{APT}$ symmetry breaking leads to an exceptional point, across which there is a transition between different types of quantum squeezing dynamics, i.e., the squeezing factor increases exponentially (oscillates periodically) with time in the pseudo-$\mathcal{APT}$ symmetric (broken) region. Such dramatic changes of squeezing factors and quantum dynamics near the exceptional point are utilized for ultra-precision quantum sensing. These exotic quantum phenomena and sensing applications can be experimentally observed in two physical systems: spontaneous wave mixing nonlinear optics and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. A quantum internet connects remote quantum processors that need interact and exchange quantum signals over a long distance through photonic channels. However, these quantum nodes are usually composed of quantum systems with emitted photons unsuitable for long-distance transmission. Therefore, quantum wavelength conversion to telecom is crucial for long-distance quantum networks based on optical fiber. Here we propose wavelength conversion devices for single-photon polarization qubits using continuous variable quantum teleportation, which can efficiently convert qubits between near-infrared (780/795 nm suitable for interacting with atomic quantum nodes) and telecom wavelength (1300-1500 nm suitable for long-distance transmission). The teleportation uses entangled photon sources (i.e., non-degenerate two-mode squeezed state) that can be generated by four-wave mixing in rubidium atomic vapor cells, with a diamond configuration of atomic transitions. The entangled fields can be emitted in two orthogonal polarizations with locked relative phase, making them especially suitable for interfacing with single-photon polarization qubits. In cold atomic systems, fast and high-resolution microscopy of individual atoms is crucial, since it can provide direct information on the dynamics and correlations of the system. Here, we demonstrate nanosecond-scale two-dimensional stroboscopic pictures of a single trapped ion beyond the optical diffraction limit, by combining the main idea of ground-state depletion microscopy with quantum state transition control in cold atoms. We achieve a spatial resolution up to 175~nm using an NA = 0.1 objective in the experiment, which represents a more than tenfold improvement compared with direct fluorescence imaging. To show the potential of this method, we apply it to observe the secular motion of the trapped ion, we demonstrate a temporal resolution up to 50~ns with a displacement detection sensitivity of 10~nm. We present dark solitons on stripe phase background in a two-component coupled Bose-Einstein condensate. It is demonstrated that there are many different dark soliton profiles, in contrast to the dark solitons reported before. These different profiles are classified qualitatively to four distinctive cases, according to the differences between stripe spatial period and soliton size, and the fluctuation degree of stripe background. The interactions between these different dark solitons are also investigated. These results further enrich our knowledge on dark solitons in ultra-cold atomic systems, and other coupled nonlinear systems.

Significant experimental progress has been made recently for observing long-sought supersolid-like states in Bose-Einstein condensates, where spatial translational symmetry is spontaneously broken by anisotropic interactions to form a stripe order. Meanwhile, the superfluid stripe ground state was also observed by applying a weak optical lattice that forces the symmetry breaking. Despite of the similarity of the ground states, here we show that these two symmetry breaking mechanisms can be distinguished by their collective excitation spectra. In contrast to gapless Goldstone modes of the \textit{spontaneous} stripe state, we propose that the excitation spectra of the \textit{forced} stripe phase can provide direct experimental evidence for the long-sought gapped pseudo-Goldstone modes. We characterize the pseudo-Goldstone mode of such lattice-induced stripe phase through its excitation spectrum and static structure factor. The scope of analog simulation in atomic, molecular, and optical systems has expanded greatly over the past decades. Recently, the idea of synthetic dimensions -- in which transport occurs in a space spanned by internal or motional states coupled by field-driven transitions -- has played a key role in this expansion. While approaches based on synthetic dimensions have led to rapid advances in single-particle Hamiltonian engineering, strong interaction effects have been conspicuously absent from most synthetic dimensions platforms. Here, in a lattice of coupled atomic momentum states, we show that atomic interactions result in large and qualitative changes to dynamics in the synthetic dimension. We explore how the interplay of nonlinear interactions and coherent tunneling enriches the dynamics of a one-band tight-binding model, giving rise to macroscopic self-trapping and phase-driven Josephson dynamics with a nonsinusoidal current-phase relationship, which can be viewed as stemming from a nonlinear band structure arising from interactions., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 3 pages of supplementary material

Weyl points, synthetic magnetic monopoles in the three-dimensional momentum space, are the key features of topological Weyl semimetals. The observation of Weyl points in ultracold atomic gases usually relies on the realization of high-dimensional spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for two pseudospin states (i.e., spin 1/2), which requires complex laser configurations and precise control of laser parameters, thus, has not been realized in experiment. Here, we propose that robust Weyl points can be realized using one-dimensional triple-well superlattices (spin-1/three-band systems) with two-dimensional transverse SOC achieved by Raman-assisted tunnelings. The presence of the third band is responsible to the robustness of the Weyl points against system parameters (e.g., Raman laser polarization, phase, incident angle, etc.). Different from a spin-1/2 system, the nontrivial topology of Weyl points in such spin-1 system is characterized by both spin vector and tensor textures, which can be probed using momentum-resolved Rabi spectroscopy. Our proposal provides a simple yet powerful platform for exploring Weyl physics and related high-dimensional topological phenomena using high pseudospin ultracold atoms.

The characterization of quantum magnetism in a large spin ($\geq 1$) system naturally involves both spin-vectors and -tensors. While certain types of spin-vector (e.g., ferromagnetic, spiral) and spin-tensor (e.g., nematic in frustrated lattices) orders have been investigated separately, the coexistence and correlation between them have not been well explored. Here we propose a novel quantum spiral spin-tensor order on a spin-1 Heisenberg chain subject to a spiral spin-tensor Zeeman field, which can be experimentally realized using a Raman-dressed cold atom optical lattice. We develop a method to fully characterize quantum phases of such spiral tensor magnetism with the coexistence of spin-vector and spin-tensor orders as well as their correlations using eight geometric parameters. Our method provides a powerful tool for characterizing spin-1 quantum magnetism and opens an avenue for exploring novel magnetic orders and spin-tensor electronics/atomtronics in large-spin systems., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

Hall tube with a tunable flux is an important geometry for studying quantum Hall physics, but its experimental realization in real space is still challenging. Here, we propose to realize a synthetic Hall tube with tunable flux in a one-dimensional optical lattice with the synthetic ring dimension defined by atomic hyperfine states. We investigate the effects of the flux on the system topology and study its quench dynamics. Utilizing the tunable flux, we show how to realize topological charge pumping, where interesting charge flow and transport are observed in rotated spin basis. Finally, we show that the recently observed quench dynamics in a synthetic Hall tube can be explained by the random flux existing in the experiment., 6 pages, 7 figures

We propose a method to prepare Majorana pairs at the corners of imprinted defects on a two-dimensional cold atom optical lattice with $s$-wave superfluid pairing. Different from previous proposals that manipulate the effective Dirac masses, our scheme relies on the sign flip of the spin-orbit coupling at the corners, which can be tuned in experiments by adjusting the angle of incident Raman lasers. The Majorana corner pairs are found to be located at the interface between two regimes with opposite spin orbit coupling strengths in an anticlockwise direction and are robust against certain symmetry-persevered perturbations. Arrays of neutral-atom qubits in optical tweezers are a promising platform for quantum computation. Despite experimental progress, a major roadblock for realizing neutral atom quantum computation is the qubit initialization. Here we propose that supersymmetry -- a theoretical framework developed in particle physics -- can be used for ultra-high fidelity initialization of neutral-atom qubits. We show that a single atom can be deterministically prepared in the vibrational ground state of an optical tweezer by adiabatically extracting all excited atoms to a supersymmetric auxiliary tweezer. The scheme works for both bosonic and fermionic atom qubits trapped in realistic Gaussian optical tweezers and may pave the way for realizing large scale quantum computation, simulation and information processing with neutral atoms., 6 pages, 7 figures

Second-order topological superconductors host Majorana corner and hingemodes in contrast to conventional edge and surface modes in two and three dimensions. However, the realization of such second-order corner modes usually demands unconventional superconducting pairing or complicated junctions or layered structures. Here we show that Majorana corner modes could be realized using a 2D quantum spin Hall insulator in proximity contact with an $s$-wave superconductor and subject to an in-plane Zeeman field. Beyond a critical value, the in-plane Zeeman field induces opposite effective Dirac masses between adjacent boundaries, leading to one Majorana mode at each corner. A similar paradigm also applies to 3D topological insulators with the emergence of Majorana hinge states. Avoiding complex superconductor pairing and material structure, our scheme provides an experimentally realistic platform for implementing Majorana corner and hinge states., 11 pages, 9 figures

The search for supersolidlike phases has attracted great attention in the fields of condensed matter and ultracold atom physics. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a route for realizing a superfluid stripe phase in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate by employing a weak optical lattice to induce momentum-space hopping between two spin-orbit band minima. We characterize the striped ground state as a function of lattice coupling strength and spin-orbit detuning and find good agreement with mean-field simulations. We observe coherent Rabi oscillations in momentum space between two band minima and demonstrate a long lifetime of the ground state. Our work offers an exciting and stable experimental platform for exploring superfluid stripe phases and their exotic excitations, which may shed light on the properties of supersolidlike states.

Controlling magnetism through non-magnetic means is highly desirable for future electronic devices, as such means typically have ultra-low power requirements and can provide coherent control. In recent years, great experimental progress has been made in the field of electrical manipulation of magnetism in numerous material systems. These studies generally do not consider the directionality of the applied non-magnetic potentials and/or magnetism switching. Here, we theoretically conceive and experimentally demonstrate a non-magnetic one-way spin switch device using a spin-orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensate subjected to a moving spin-independent repulsive dipole potential. The physical foundation of this unidirectional device is based on the breakdown of Galilean invariance in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Such a one-way spin switch opens an avenue for designing quantum devices with unique functionalities and may facilitate further experimental investigations of other one-way spintronic and atomtronic devices., For use in electronic and quantum applications, controlling the magnetism of a system through non-magnetic means is important. Here, the authors demonstrate a unidirectional non-magnetic spin-switch device using spin-momentum coupling in Bose–Einstein condensates of ultracold Rb-87 atoms.

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling for ultracold atomic gases opens a new avenue for engineering solitons with internal spatial structures through tuning atomic band dispersions. However, the types of the resulting stripe solitons in a spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) have been limited to dark-dark or bright-bright with the same density profiles for different spins. Here we propose that general types of stripe solitons, including magnetic stripe (e.g., dark-bright) and localized stripe waves (neither bright nor dark), could be realized in a spin-1 BEC with widely tunable band dispersions through modulating the coupling between three spin states and the linear momentum of atoms. \ Surprisingly, a moving magnetic stripe soliton can possess both negative and positive effective masses at different velocities, leading to a zero mass soliton at certain velocity. The concept of topological phases has been generalized to higher-order topological insulators and superconductors with novel boundary states on corners or hinges. Meanwhile, recent experimental advances in controlling dissipation (such as gain and loss) open new possibilities in studying non-Hermitian topological phases. Here, we show that higher-order topological corner states can emerge by simply introducing staggered on-site gain/loss to a Hermitian system in trivial phases. For such a non-Hermitian system, we establish a general bulk-corner correspondence by developing a biorthogonal nested-Wilson-loop and edge-polarization theory, which can be applied to a wide class of non-Hermitian systems with higher-order topological orders. The theory gives rise to topological invariants characterizing the non-Hermitian topological multipole moments (i.e., corner states) that are protected by reflection or chiral symmetry. Such gain/loss induced higher-order topological corner states can be experimentally realized using photons in coupled cavities or cold atoms in optical lattices., Comment: 4 pages + Supplementary Materials

Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), an unusual class of electromagnetic metamaterials, have found important applications in various fields due to their distinctive properties. A surprising feature of HMMs is that even continuous HMMs can possess topological edge modes. However, previous studies based on equal-frequency surface (analogy of Fermi surface) may not correctly capture the topology of entire bands. Here we develop a topological band description for continuous HMMs that can be described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian formulated from Maxwell's equations. We find two types of three dimensional non-Hermitian triply-degenerate points with complex linear dispersions and topological charges $\pm 2$ and 0 induced by chiral and gyromagnetic effects. Because of the photonic nature, the vacuum band plays an important role for topological edge states and bulk-edge correspondence in HMMs. The topological band results are numerically confirmed by direct simulation of Maxwell's equations. Our work presents a general non-Hermitian topological band treatment of continuous HMMs, paving the way for exploring interesting topological phases in photonic continua and device implementations of topological HMMs., 12 pages. 11 figures

Floquet dynamics of a quantum system subject to periodic modulations of system parameters provide a powerful tool for engineering new quantum matter with exotic properties. While system dynamics are significantly altered, the periodic modulation itself is usually induced externally and independent of Floquet dynamics. Here we propose a new type of Floquet physics for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) subject to a shaken lattice generated inside a cavity, where the shaken lattice and atomic Floquet bands are mutually dependent, resulting in self-adapted Floquet dynamics. In particular, the shaken lattice induces Floquet quasi-energy bands for the BEC, whose back action leads to a self-adapted dynamical normal-superradiant phase transition for the shaken lattice. Such self-adapted Floquet dynamics show two surprising and unique features: \textit{i}) the normal-superradiant phase transition possesses a hysteresis even without atom interactions; \textit{ii}) the dynamical atom-cavity steady state could exist at free energy maxima. The atom interactions strongly affect the phase transition of the BEC from zero to finite momenta. Our results provide a powerful platform for exploring self-adapted Floquet dynamics, which may open an avenue for engineering novel quantum materials., Comment: 7+6 pages, 6 figures

Recent experimental realization of one-dimensional (1D) spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for ultracold alkaline-earth(-like) atoms in optical lattice clocks opens a new avenue for exploring exotic quantum matter because of the strongly suppressed heating of atoms from lasers comparing with alkaline atoms. Here we propose a scheme to realize two-dimensional (2D) Rashba and three-dimensional (3D) Weyl types of SOC in a 3D optical lattice clock and explore their topological phases. With 3D Weyl SOC, the system can support topological phases with various numbers as well as types (I or II) of Weyl points. The spin textures of such topological bands for 2D Rashba and 3D Weyl SOC can be detected using suitably designed spectroscopic sequences. The Josephson effect is a prominent phenomenon of quantum supercurrents that has been widely studied in superconductors and superfluids. Typical Josephson junctions consist of two real-space superconductors (superfluids) coupled through a weak tunneling barrier. Here we propose a momentum-space Josephson junction in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate, where states with two diffferent momenta are coupled through Raman-assisted tunneling. We show that Josephson currents can be induced not only by applying the equivalent of "voltages", but also by tuning tunneling phases. Such tunneling-phase-driven Josephson junctions in momentum space are characterized through both full mean field analysis and a concise two-level model, demonstrating the important role of interactions between atoms. Our scheme provides a platform for experimentally realizing momentum-space Josephson junctions and exploring their applications in quantum-mechanical circuits., 10 pages, 7 figures

We investigate the possibility of observing in integrated solid-state systems the dynamical Casimir effect, in which photons are created out of vacuum. We use a transmission line resonator on a superconducting chip as the microwave cavity and modulate its properties by coupling it to carefully designed Josephson devices. We evaluate the effect of main decoherence sources and show that our design offers a promising system for experimentally demonstrating the dynamical Casimir effect. Moreover, we also study the squeezing properties of the created photon field and how they depend on the dissipation.

We propose a scheme for simulating the behaviors of Weyl semimetals by using a two-dimensional array of degenerate optical cavities. To simplify such a three-dimensional system to a two-dimension system, the orbital angular momentum of the light is used to support an extra synthetic dimension. We find that this system is quite suitable for the purpose of investigating the features of the Weyl point by taking advantage of the input-output relation of the optical cavity system. We show that the transport properties of our system are determined by the number of sites along the constrained direction and the spin texture of the system makes the transport momentum dependent and spin dependent.

The large number of available orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of photons provides a unique resource for many important applications in quantum information and optical communications. However, conventional OAM switching devices usually rely on precise parameter control and are limited by slow switching rate and low efficiency. Here we propose a robust, fast and efficient photonic OAM switch device based on a topological process, where photons are adiabatically pumped to a target OAM state on demand. Such topological OAM pumping can be realized through manipulating photons in a few degenerate main cavities and involves only a limited number of optical elements. A large change of OAM at $\sim 10^{q}$ can be realized with only $q$ degenerate main cavities and at most $5q$ pumping cycles. The topological photonic OAM switch may become a powerful device for broad applications in many different fields and motivate novel topological design of conventional optical devices., 10 pages, 9 figures

Photons propagating in Laguerre-Gaussian modes have characteristic orbital angular momentums, which are fundamental optical degrees of freedom. The orbital angular momentum of light has potential application in high capacity optical communication and even in quantum information processing. In this work, we experimentally construct a ring cavity with 4 lenses and 4 mirrors that is completely degenerate for Laguerre-Gaussian modes. By measuring the transmission peaks and patterns of different modes, the ring cavity is shown to supporting more than 31 Laguerre-Gaussian modes. The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling for ultracold atomic gases provides a powerful platform for exploring many interesting quantum phenomena. In these studies, spin represents spin vector (spin-1/2 or spin-1) and orbit represents linear momentum. Here we propose a scheme to realize a new type of spin-tensor--momentum coupling (STMC) in spin-1 ultracold atomic gases. We study the ground state properties of interacting Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with STMC and find interesting new types of stripe superfluid phases and multicritical points for phase transitions. Furthermore, STMC makes it possible to study quantum states with dynamical stripe orders that display density modulation with a long tunable period and high visibility, paving the way for direct experimental observation of a new dynamical supersolid-like state.. We propose a scheme to simulate topological physics within a single degenerate cavity, whose modes are mapped to lattice sites. A crucial ingredient of the scheme is to construct a sharp boundary so that the open boundary condition can be implemented for this effective lattice system. In doing so, the topological properties of the system can manifest themselves on the edge states, which can be probed from the spectrum of an output cavity field. We demonstrate this with two examples: a static Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain and a periodically driven Floquet topological insulator. The ability to generate and tune quantized persistent supercurrents is crucial for building superconducting or atomtronic devices with novel functionalities. In ultracold atoms, previous methods for generating quantized supercurrents are generally based on dynamical processes to prepare atoms in metastable excited states. Here we show that arbitrary quantized circulation states can be adiabatically prepared and tuned as the ground state of a ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate by utilizing spin-orbital-angular-momentum (SOAM) coupling and an external potential. There exists superfluid hysteresis for tuning supercurrents between different quantization values with nonlinear atomic interactions, which is explained by developing a nonlinear Landau-Zener theory. We study the nonequilibrium quantum phase transition of an Ising chain in a dissipative cavity driven by an external transverse light field. When driving and dissipation are in balance, the system can reach a nonequilibrium steady state which undergoes a super-radiant phase transition as the driving strength increases. Interestingly, the super-radiant field changes the effective bias of the Ising chain in return and drives its own transition between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase. We study the rich physics in this system with sophisticated behavior, and investigate important issues in its dynamics such as the stability of the system and criticality of the phase transition., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Since the recent experimental realization of synthetic Rashba spin-orbit coupling paved a new avenue for exploring and engineering topological phases in ultracold atoms, a precise, solid detection of Berry phase has been desired for unequivocal characterization of system topology. Here, we propose a scheme to conduct momentum-space Aharonov-Bohm interferometry in a Rashba spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate with a sudden change of in-plane Zeeman field, capable of measuring the Berry phase of Rashba energy bands. We find that the Berry phase with the presence of a Dirac point is directly revealed by a robust dark interference fringe, and that as a function of external Zeeman field is characterized by the contrast of fringes. We also build a variational model describing the interference process with semiclassical equations of motion of essential dynamical quantities, which lead to agreeable trajectories and geometric phases with the real-time simulation of Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our study would provide timely guidance for the experimental detection of Berry phase in ultracold atomic systems and help further investigation on their interference dynamics in momentum space., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Orbital angular momentum of light is a fundamental optical degree of freedom characterized by unlimited number of available angular momentum states. Although this unique property has proved invaluable in diverse recent studies ranging from optical communication to quantum information, it has not been considered useful or even relevant for simulating nontrivial physics problems such as topological phenomena. Contrary to this misconception, we demonstrate the incredible value of orbital angular momentum of light for quantum simulation by showing theoretically how it allows to study a variety of important 2D topological physics in a 1D array of optical cavities. This application for orbital angular momentum of light not only reduces required physical resources but also increases feasible scale of simulation, and thus makes it possible to investigate important topics such as edge-state transport and topological phase transition in a small simulator ready for immediate experimental exploration., A wide variety of interesting phenomena arise in 2D systems subject to external gauge fields, but these are sometimes challenging to verify experimentally. Here the authors propose a setup to simulate 2D physics with a 1D arrangement of cavities, by exploiting the orbital angular momentum of trapped photons.

We study the effects of diffusion on a $\Lambda$-gradient echo memory, which is a coherent optical quantum memory using thermal gases. The efficiency of this memory is high for short storage time, but decreases exponentially due to decoherence as the storage time is increased. We study the effects of both longitudinal and transverse diffusion in this memory system, and give both analytical and numerical results that are in good agreement. Our results show that diffusion has a significant effect on the efficiency. Further, we suggest ways to reduce these effects to improve storage efficiency., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

A convenient and effective way in the quantum double model to study anyons in a topological space with a tensor product structure is to create and braid anyons using ribbon operators connected to a common base site [A. Kitaev Ann.\ Phys. (N.Y.) \textbf{303}, 2 (2003)]. We show how this scheme can be simulated in a physical system by constructing long ribbon operators connected to a base site that is placed faraway. We describe how to move and braid anyons using these ribbon operators, and how to perform measurement on them. We also give the smallest scale of a system that is sufficient for proof-of-principle demonstration of our scheme., 16 pages
