Abstract Introduction Psychotic depression (PD) is a highly debilitating disorder characterized by hallucinations and/or delusions accompanied by depression. A variety of neurotransmitters, hormones and corresponding receptors in the endocrine system are involved in the onset and progression of depression, and fasting blood glucose (FBG) can be an important indicator for monitoring the stability of the endocrine system. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between FBG and PD in a Chinese population with first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods In this study, 1718 outpatient individuals diagnosed with first-episode drug-naïve major depressive disorder (FEDN MDD) were included. The association between PD and FBG levels was identified through multivariable binary logistic regression analysis. To investigate potential non-linear relationships, a two-piecewise linear regression model was utilized. Additionally, interaction and stratified analyses were performed based on gender, educational background, marital status, presence of comorbid anxiety, and history of suicide attempt. Abstract Background This study investigates the effectiveness and safety of aripiprazole oral solution in Chinese patients with schizophrenia. Methods This was a multicenter, single-arm phase IV study involving 134 patients in China in the acute stage of schizophrenia from May 2021 to July 2022. The patients received aripiprazole oral solution 10 − 30 mg/d for 12 weeks. The effectiveness endpoints included the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) and the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale score. The safety endpoints included adverse events, laboratory inspection indicators (including the serum prolactin level [PRL]), and waist circumferences (WC). Results Ultimately, 86 patients (64.18%) completed the trial, and 21 patients (15.67%) dropped out due to poor effectiveness. From baseline to week eight, 43.28% of patients had a PANSS reduction of ≥ 50%, 82.84% of patients improved in the CGI-Improvement (CGI-I scale score of 1 − 3), and the percentage of patients with abnormal PRL and waist circumferences decreased significantly. In total, 45 patients (33.58%) experienced mild adverse drug reactions predominately manifested as extrapyramidal symptoms (EPSs; 9.70%), constipation (8.96%), and palpitations (7.46%). Upon further subgroup analysis, aripiprazole oral solution demonstrated significantly improved effectiveness in first-episode schizophrenia patients and those with symptoms of agitation. Conclusions Aripiprazole oral solution displayed positive clinical effectiveness and favorable tolerability in Chinese patients in the acute stage of schizophrenia. Abstract Objective An alternative metric for evaluating insulin resistance (IR) is the triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI). However, it is yet unclear how TyG-BMI and suicide attempts (SA) are related. The objective of this research was to explore the correlation between the TyG-BMI index and SA in individuals with untreated first-episode (UFE) major depressive disorder (MDD) in Shanxi Province. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2016 to December 2018 in the psychiatric outpatient clinic of Taiyuan General Hospital and included 1718 patients with UFE MDD, with a mean age of 34.9 ± 12.4 years. The relationship between TyG-BMI and SA was assessed using logistic regression modeling. We investigated threshold effects using a two-piecewise linear regression model. Results Taking into consideration the potential influence of confounding variables, a comprehensive multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted, which demonstrated the absence of a statistically significant association between the TyG-BMI index and the occurrence of SA, as evidenced by P-values that were all greater than 0.05. On the other hand, the visual analysis of the smoothed plots revealed a U-shaped relationship between the TyG-BMI index and the incidence of SA, with a notable inflection occurring at a TyG-BMI value of around 210. It was observed that the effect sizes flanking the inflection point, accompanied by their 95% confidence intervals, were 0.985 (95% CI: 0.972 to 0.999, P = 0.031) and 1.012 (95% CI: 1.003 to 1.047, P = 0.005), respectively. Conclusions In UFE MDD patients, a U-shaped link was observed between TyG-BMI and SA, with the minimal SA incidence noted at a TyG-BMI level of 210, signifying that an augmented risk for SA might be connected to both diminished and augmented TyG-BMI levels.

ObjectiveTo analyze the prevalence and determinants of overweight/obesity and elevated blood pressure among primary and secondary school students aged 7 – 18 years in Guizhou province to provide evidence for the development of effective interventions. MethodsMeasurements of height, weight, and blood pressure and a survey of health and related factors using a questionnaire used in the National Surveillance of Common Diseases and Health-Related Factors among Students were conducted from September 2022 to March 2023 among 187 674 students aged 7 to 18 years recruited using stratified multistage cluster sampling from 2 primary schools and 2 junior high schools in each district/county and 2 senior high schools in each district and one senior high school in for all districts/counties of Guizhou province. Overweight/obesity, elevated blood pressure, and inadequate sleep were assessed according to national references including Screening for Overweight and Obesity in School-Aged Children and Adolescents: WS/T 586 – 2018, Screening Threshold for High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents Aged 7 – 18: WS/T 610 – 2018, and Hygiene Requirements for Daily Study Time of Primary and Secondary School Students: GB/T 17223 – 2012. Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the prevalence and determinants of the two disorders and their comorbidity. ResultsAmong the 182 616 students effectively surveyed, the prevalence of overweight/obesity was 23.0%, the detection rate of elevated blood pressure was 13.9%, and the comorbidity of both conditions was 4.4%. The comorbidity rate of overweight/obesity and elevated blood pressure among students differed significantly by economic development region (4.6%, 4.3%, and 4.1% for those from undeveloped, moderately developed, and highly developed regions, respectively; χ2 = 23.679, P < 0.001), gender (4.7% for males and 4.0% for females; χ2 = 55.967, P < 0.001), and educational level (5.1% for senior high school students, 4.8% for junior high school students, and 3.9% for primary school students; χ2 = 118.414, P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that students with the following characteristics had a significantly reduced risk of developing the comorbidity of overweight/obesity and elevated blood pressure: school boarding (odds ratio [OR] = 0.773) compared with non-boarding, 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily (OR = 0.773) compared with no 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, spending < 1 hour or 1 – 2.9 hours per day studying after school (OR = 0.833 or OR = 0.894), and having adequate daily sleep (OR = 0.912) compared with inadequate daily sleep (P < 0.05 for all). ConclusionAmong primary and high school students in Guizhou province, the prevalence of overweight/obesity and elevated blood pressure should be of concern, especially among those in economically underdeveloped regions; males and high school students are key groups for preventing the comorbidity of overweight/obesity and elevated blood pressure; school boarding, with 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily and adequate daily sleep are protective factors, but spending ≥ 3 hours per day studying after school is a risk factor for the comorbidity of overweight/obesity and elevated blood pressure.

Objective Treatment compliance among psychiatric patients is related to disease outcomes. How to assess patient compliance remains a concern. Here, we established a predictive model for medication compliance in patients with psychotic disorders to provide a reference for early intervention in treatment non-compliance behaviour.Design Clinical information for 451 patients with psychotic disorders was downloaded from the Dryad database. The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator regression and logistic regression were used to establish the model. Bootstrap resampling (1000 iterations) was used for internal validation and a nomogram was drawn to predict medication compliance. The consistency index, Brier score, receiver operating characteristic curve and decision curve were used for model evaluation.Setting 35 Italian Community Psychiatric Services.Participants 451 patients prescribed with any long-acting intramuscular (LAI) antipsychotic were consecutively recruited, and assessed after 6 months and 12 months, from December 2015 to May 2017.Results 432 patients with psychotic disorders were included for model construction; among these, the compliance rate was 61.3%. ObjectiveThe aim of this research was to examine the association between alcohol consumption and depressive symptoms in the Wa ethnic minority of China, a population where this relationship has been insufficiently explored.MethodsA cross-sectional analysis was conducted on a sample of 317 current drinkers from the Wa ethnic minority, a “direct fast-forward” group in Cangyuan County, between December 1, 2022, and February 28, 2023. Utilizing a multi-stage cluster sampling approach, participants were selected, each of whom exhibited an Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) score exceeding 0. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews employing a uniform questionnaire. Quantification of alcohol use was achieved through the application of the AUDIT, while the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-9 was employed to gauge depressive symptoms. The relationship between the severity of alcohol consumption and depressive symptoms was evaluated using a multivariable logistic regression model. Subsequently, potential non-linear associations were scrutinized through the application of a smoothing plot.ResultsThe study included 317 current drinkers (196 males [61.83%]; mean age 41.78 ± 12.91 years), of which 94 (29.65%) exhibited comorbid depressive symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression analysis, adjusting for confounders, revealed that higher AUDIT scores were significantly associated with an increased probability of depressive symptoms (OR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.02–1.18, p = 0.008). The risk of depressive symptoms was notably greater in the group with alcohol dependent range in contrast the group at low-risk range (OR = 7.01, 95% CI: 1.66–29.62, p = 0.008). Abstract Background Evidence regarding the relationship between fasting blood glucose (FBG) and suicide attempts (SA) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) was limited. Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate whether FBG was independently related to SA in Chinese patients with first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) MDD after adjusting for other covariates. Methods The present study was a cross-sectional study. A total of 1718 participants (average age: 34.9 ± 12.4 years, 65.8% females) with FEDN MDD were involved in a hospital in China from September 2016 to December 2018. Multiple logistic regression analysis and smooth curve fitting were used to estimate the association between FBG and the risk of SA. The threshold effect was examined by the two-piecewise linear regression model. Interaction and stratified analyses were conducted according to sex, education, marital status, comorbid anxiety, and psychotic symptoms. Results The prevalence of SA in patients with FEDN MDD was 20.1%. The result of fully adjusted binary logistic regression showed FBG was positively associated with the risk of SA (odds ratio (OR) = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.13–2.32). Smoothing plots also revealed a nonlinear relationship between FBG and SA, with the inflection point of FBG being 5.34 mmol/l. The effect sizes and the confidence intervals on the left and right sides of the inflection point were 0.53 (0.32–0.88, P = 0.014) and 1.48 (1.04–2.10, P = 0.030), respectively. Conclusions A U-shaped relationship between FBG and SA in FEDN MDD patients was found, with the lowest risk of SA at a FBG of 5.34 mmol/l, indicating that both the lower and higher FBG levels may lead to an increased risk of SA.

Abstract Background Patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) exhibit difficulties deficits in recognizing facial expressions with unambiguous valence. However, only a limited number of studies have examined how these patients fare in interpreting facial expressions with ambiguous valence (for example, surprise). Thus, we aimed to explore the influence of emotional background information on the recognition of ambiguous facial expressions in SCZ. Methods A 3 (emotion: negative, neutral, and positive) × 2 (group: healthy controls and SCZ) experimental design was adopted in the present study. The experimental materials consisted of 36 images of negative emotions, 36 images of neutral emotions, 36 images of positive emotions, and 36 images of surprised facial expressions. In each trial, a briefly presented surprised face was preceded by an affective image. Participants (36 SCZ and 36 healthy controls (HC)) were required to rate their emotional experience induced by the surprised facial expressions. Participants’ emotional experience was measured using the 9-point rating scale. The experimental data have been analyzed by conducting analyses of variances (ANOVAs) and correlation analysis. Results First, the SCZ group reported a more positive emotional experience under the positive cued condition compared to the negative cued condition. Meanwhile, the HC group reported the strongest positive emotional experience in the positive cued condition, a moderate experience in the neutral cued condition, and the weakest in the negative cue condition. Second, the SCZ (vs. HC) group showed longer reaction times (RTs) for recognizing surprised facial expressions. The severity of schizophrenia symptoms in the SCZ group was negatively correlated with their rating scores for emotional experience under neutral and positive cued condition. Conclusions Recognition of surprised facial expressions was influenced by background information in both SCZ and HC, and the negative symptoms in SCZ. The present study indicates that the role of background information should be fully considered when examining the ability of SCZ to recognize ambiguous facial expressions.

ObjectiveThe risk of suicide can be decreased by accurately identifying high-risk suicide groups and implementing the right interventions. The aim of this study was to develop a nomogram for suicide attempts (SA) in patients with first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) major depressive disorder (MDD).MethodsThis study undertook a cross-sectional analysis of 1,718 patients diagnosed with FEDN MDD, providing comprehensive clinical data from September 2016 to December 2018. Data on anthropometric and sociodemographic factors were gathered, and the severity of depression and anxiety was evaluated using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17) and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), respectively. Additionally, thyroid hormone levels, lipid profile parameters, and fasting blood glucose (FBG) were measured. Suicide attempt (SA) history was verified based on an amalgamation of medical records, patient interviews, and family interviews. Participants were randomly divided into a training group (70%, n = 1,204) and a validation group (30%, n = 514). In the training group, LASSO analysis and multivariate regression were used to identify variables associated with SA. A nomogram was then constructed using the identified risk factors to estimate the likelihood of SA within the training group. To assess the accuracy, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was utilized, and calibration plots were employed to evaluate calibration. Additionally, decision curve analysis (DCA) was performed to assess the precision of the model. Finally, internal validation was carried out using the validation group.ResultsA practical nomogram has been successfully constructed, incorporating HAMD, HAMA, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), and systolic blood pressure (SBP) parameters, to estimate the probability of SA in Chinese patients diagnosed with FEDN MDD. The pooled area under the ROC for SA risk in both the training and validation groups was found to be 0.802 (95% CI: 0.771 to 0.832) and 0.821 (95% CI: 0.774 to 0.868), respectively. Calibration analysis revealed a satisfactory correlation between the nomogram probabilities and the actual observed probabilities. The clinical applicability of the nomogram was confirmed through decision curve analysis. Abstract Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common psychiatric disorder worldwide. Psychotic depression has been reported to be frequently under-diagnosed due to poor recognition of psychotic features. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to reveal the rate and risk factors of psychotic symptoms in young, drug-naïve patients with major depressive disorder at the time of their first episode. Methods A total of 917 patients were recruited and divided into psychotic and non-psychotic subgroups based on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) positive subscale score. Abstract Background Associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and common psychiatric disorders among older Chinese individuals have not been well reported. The objectives of this study are to examine the prevalence of ACEs and the associations of ACEs with common psychiatric disorders among older adults in China. Methods The study used data from the China Mental Health Survey (CMHS), a nationally representative epidemiological survey, which used computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI), logistic regression models were used to examine community-based adult psychiatric disorders and associated risk factors. Finally, 2,317 individuals aged 60 years or over were included in the CMHS. The national prevalence of ACEs in older adults were estimated and logistic regression were used to analyse the association between ACEs and past-year psychiatric disorders. Results Prevalence of ACEs among older adults in China was 18.1%. The three most common types of ACEs were neglect (11.6%), domestic violence (9.2%), and parental loss (9.1%). This study proved the association between ACEs and common past-year psychiatric disorders in older adults. ACEs increased the risk of past-year psychiatric disorders in older adults. After adjustment for age, sex, marital status, employment status, education, rural or urban residence, region, and physical diseases, the association between ACEs and past-year psychiatric disorders were still significant. Conclusions ACEs are linked to an increased risk for past-year psychiatric disorders in older adults. ACEs may have long-term effects on older adults’ mental well-being. Preventing ACEs may help reduce possible adverse health outcomes in later life.

Abstract Controversial evidence exists on the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and suicide attempts (SA) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the association between BMI and SA in first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) MDD patients in China. The study was conducted from 2016 to 2018 in Taiyuan, China. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyzed the BMI–SA association, with subgroup analysis for gender. Threshold effects were examined using two-piecewise regression. In males, BMI was significantly associated with SA (OR = 0.84, 95% CI 0.74–0.94, P = 0.003) after full adjustment, but not in females (OR = 0.97, 95% CI 0.89–1.06, P = 0.541). The interaction with gender was significant (P for interaction 0.05). Results showed an L-shaped nonlinear BMI–SA relationship in FEDN MDD patients but differing BMI inflection points between genders, thus contributing to effective prevention programs for suicide.

Abstract This study aimed to explore sex differences in the relationship between thyroid function indicators and suicide attempts in first-episode and drug-naïve young major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with comorbid anxiety (MDA). A total of 917 MDD patients (aged 18–35 years) were recruited. The Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD-17), Hamilton anxiety rating scale (HAMA), positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS) positive subscale and clinical global impression of severity scale (CGI-S) were used. 467 patients were classified as MDA. The prevalence of suicide attempts was 31.3% in MDA patients, which was significantly higher than that (7.3%) in MDD patients without anxiety. Compared with MDA patients without suicide attempts, MDA patients with suicide attempts were older, had a later age of onset, higher HAMD-17, HAMA, and PANSS positive symptom subscale scores, as well as higher TSH, TgAb and TPOAb levels. For male patients, TSH and TPOAb levels were independently associated with suicide attempts. For female patients, HAMA, PANSS positive symptom scores, CGI-S score and TPOAb levels were independently associated with suicide attempts. Our results suggest that the indicators of thyroid function which can predict suicide attempts in male and female MDA patients have sex differences.

Abstract Objective Previous studies have shown that transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS) led to an improvement of cognitive function in patients with schizophrenia, but rare study has explored the effect of tDCS on long-term hospitalized chronic schizophrenia with tardive dyskinesia (TD). The present research explored if cognitive function in patients with long-term hospitalized chronic schizophrenia with TD could be improved through tDCS. Methods This study is a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial. Of the 52 patients, 14 dropped out, and 38 completed the experiment. Thirty-eight patients on stable treatment regimens were randomly assigned to receive active tDCS(n = 21) or sham stimulation(n = 17) on weekdays of the first, third, and fifth weeks of treatment. Patients performed the Pattern Recognition Memory (PRM) and the Intra/Extradimensional Set Shift (IED) from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) at baseline and the end of week 3, week 5. Clinical symptoms were also measured at the baseline and the fifth week using the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Side effects of tDCS were assessed with an experimenter-administered open-ended questionnaire during the whole experiment. Results There were no significant differences in PRM and IED performance metrics, SANS total score and PANSS total score between active and sham tDCS groups at the end of week 5 (p > 0.05). Furthermore, there was a significant difference in the adverse effects of the tingling sensation between the two groups (p 0.05). Conclusion According to these findings, no evidence supports using anodal stimulation over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to improve cognitive function in patients with long-term hospitalized chronic schizophrenia with TD.

Abstract Background Recent studies have reported that psychotic symptoms are common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, few studies have reported the relationship between thyroid function, lipid metabolism and clinical profiles in female MDD patients. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of psychotic depression (PD) and its risk factors in first-episode and drug naive (FEDN) depression among the female population in China. Methods This was a cross-sectional study involving a representative probability sample of 1,130 FEDN female outpatients with MDD (aged 18 years or older) in China. We collected information relating to socio-demographic characteristics, clinical data and blood samples. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale 17-item version (HAMD-17), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale 14-item version (HAMA-14), and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used to evaluate depressive, anxiety, and psychotic symptoms. Results The prevalence of psychotic symptoms in female MDD patients was 10.97%. The findings revealed significant differences between MDD female patients with psychotic symptoms and non-PD female patients in the following areas: higher HAMD scores, higher HAMA scores, more severe anxiety and an increased risk of suicide attempts. Further logistic regression analysis showed that psychotic symptoms were associated with higher thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and an odds ratio of 1.168. Conclusions Our findings supported the hypothesis that higher TSH levels were correlated with psychotic symptoms in female MDD patients. Therefore, serum TSH levels may be a potential biomarker of PD in female MDD patients. In addition, we found that PD was closely associated with suicide attempts and lipid levels, but did not reach statistical significance.

To assess the correlation between the TyG index and the likelihood of psychotic symptoms, the study used multivariable binary logistic regression analysis. Additionally, two-segmented linear regression models were employed to investigate possible threshold effects in case non-linearity relationships were identified.ResultsAmong the patients, 9.95% (171 out of 1,718) exhibited psychotic symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed a positive correlation between the TyG index and the likelihood of psychotic symptoms (OR = 2.12, 95% CI: 1.21-3.74, P = 0.01) after adjusting for confounding variables. Moreover, smoothed plots revealed a nonlinear relationship with the TyG index, revealing an inflection point at 8.42. Interestingly, no significant link was observed to the left of the inflection point (OR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.04-6.64, P = 0.60), whereas beyond this point, a positive correlation emerged between the TyG index and psychotic symptoms (OR = 2.42, 95% CI: 1.31-4.48, P = 0.01). Particularly, a considerable 142% rise in the probability of experiencing psychotic symptoms was found with each incremental elevation in the TyG index.ConclusionsUnderstanding the non-linear link between the TyG index and the risk of psychotic symptoms in Chinese patients with FEDN MDD highlights the potential for targeted therapeutic approaches. By acknowledging the threshold effect observed, there is an opportunity to mitigate risk factors associated with IR-related psychiatric comorbidities through tailored interventions. These preliminary results stress the need for further longitudinal research to solidify these insights and contribute to more effective therapeutic strategies.

Abstract Aim Our study aimed to evaluate the sleep status of psychiatric nurses in Chinese population and analyse the influencing factors. Design Cross‐sectional, correlation design with logistic regression analysis. Methods We investigated 1,044 psychiatric nurses from seven psychiatric hospitals in China. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey were used as main measures. Results The average Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score of 1,044 psychiatric nurses was 7.00 ± 3.59, and 38.63% of nurses had a total Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score >7. Our study found that middle‐night shift nurses had poor sleep quality and sleep disorders are positively correlated with emotional exhaustion and cynical disregard for job burnout. Middle‐night shift nurses showed 1.586 times more likely to suffer from sleep disorders than those non‐middle‐night shift. The higher the score of emotional exhaustion, the greater the risk of sleep disorders.

Abstract The association between coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine acceptance and perceived stigma of having a mental illness is not clear. This study examined the association between COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and perceived stigma among patients with recurrent depressive disorder (depression hereafter) using network analysis. Participants were 1149 depressed patients (842 men, 307 women) who completed survey measures of perceived stigma and COVID-19 vaccine attitudes. T-tests, chi-square tests, and Kruskal–Wallis tests were used to compare differences in demographic and clinical characteristics between depressed patients who indented to accepted vaccines and those who were hesitant. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses assessed the unique association between COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and perceived stigma, independent of depression severity. Network analysis examined item-level relations between COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and perceived stigma after controlling for depressive symptoms. Altogether, 617 depressed patients (53.7%, 95 confidence intervals (CI) %: 50.82–56.58%) reported they would accept future COVID-19 vaccination. Abstract Background In recent years, the rates of suicide among young people have been increasing, and major depressive disorder (MDD) is regarded to be its main cause. Many factors such as thyroid dysfunction and metabolic abnormalities are thought to mediate this process, but the conclusions are inconsistent. This study investigated the rate of suicide attempts and associated risk factors among young, first-episode and drug-naïve Chinese Han patients with MDD. Methods A total of 917 patients with MDD (aged 18 ~ 35 years) were recruited. Demographic and clinical data were collected and thyroid function, fasting blood glucose and lipid profiles were measured. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 items (HAMD-17), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), positive symptom subscale of Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and clinical global impression of severity scale (CGI-S) were adopted to assess depression, anxiety, psychotic symptoms and disease severity respectively. Results The rate of suicide attempts was 19.5% in young MDD patients. There were significant differences in age (p = 0.003), education level (p = 0.001), age of onset (p = 0.004) and disease duration (p = 0.001) between patients with and without suicide attempts. ObjectiveTriglyceride glucose (TyG) index has been suggested as an alternative indicator of insulin resistance (IR); however, the association between TyG index and suicide attempts (SA) in major depressive disorder (MDD) is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between TyG index and SA in Chinese patients with first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) MDD.MethodsThis cross-sectional study enrolled 1,718 patients with FEDN MDD aged 34.9 ± 12.4 years from the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University (Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China) from September 2016 to December 2018. Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between TyG index and the risk of SA. A two-piecewise linear regression model was used to investigate the threshold effects if non-linearity associations existed. Abstract Background Interleukin-18 (IL-18) may participate in the development of major depressive disorder, but the specific mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to explore whether IL-18 correlates with areas of the brain associated with depression. Methods Using a case–control design, 68 subjects (34 patients and 34 healthy controls) underwent clinical assessment, blood sampling, and resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). The total Hamilton depression-17 (HAMD-17) score was used to assess depression severity. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect IL-18 levels. Rest-state fMRI was conducted to explore spontaneous brain activity. Results The level of IL-18 was higher in patients with depression in comparison with healthy controls. IL-18 was negatively correlated with degree centrality of the left posterior cingulate gyrus in the depression patient group, but no correlation was found in the healthy control group. Conclusion This study suggests the involvement of IL-18 in the pathophysiological mechanism for depression and interference with brain activity.

Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has a disproportionate impact on vulnerable subpopulations, including those with severe mental illness (SMI). This study examined the one-year prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI), suicide plans (SP), and suicide attempts (SA) in bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) patients during the pandemic. Prevalence rates were compared between the two disorders and associated factors were examined. A survey was conducted in six tertiary psychiatric hospitals and psychiatric units. People with a diagnosis of BD or SCZ were invited to participate. SI, SP, and SA (suicidality for short) were assessed and associated factors were examined using binary logistical regression. The 1-year prevalence of SI, SP and SA in BD patients were 58.3%, (95% CI: 54.1–62.6%), 38.4% (95% CI: 34.3–42.6%) and 38.6% (95% CI: 34.5–42.8%), respectively, which were higher than the corresponding figures in SCZ patients (SI: 33.2%, 95% CI: 28.6–37.8%; SP: 16.8%, 95% CI: 13.2–20.5%; SA: 19.4%, 95% CI: 15.5–23.3%). Patients with younger age, experience of cyberbullying, a history of SA among family or friends, a higher fatigue and physical pain score, inpatient status, and severe depressive symptoms were more likely to have suicidality. The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with increased risk of suicidality, particularly in BD patients. It is of importance to regularly screen suicidality in BD and SCZ patients during the pandemic even if they are clinically stable.

Abstract Background Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous risk genes for lacunar stroke, but it is challenging to decipher how they confer risk for the disease. We employed an integrative analytical pipeline to efficiently transform genetic associations to identify novel proteins for lacunar stroke. Methods We systematically integrated lacunar stroke genome-wide association study (GWAS) (N=7338) with human brain proteomes (N=376) to perform proteome-wide association studies (PWAS), Mendelian randomization (MR), and Bayesian colocalization. We also used an independent human brain proteomic dataset (N=152) to annotate the new genes. Results We found that the protein abundance of seven genes (ICA1L, CAND2, ALDH2, MADD, MRVI1, CSPG4, and PTPN11) in the brain was associated with lacunar stroke. These seven genes were mainly expressed on the surface of glutamatergic neurons, GABAergic neurons, and astrocytes. Three genes (ICA1L, CAND2, ALDH2) were causal in lacunar stroke (P < 0.05/proteins identified for PWAS; posterior probability of hypothesis 4 ≥ 75 % for Bayesian colocalization), and they were linked with lacunar stroke in confirmatory PWAS and independent MR. We also found that ICA1L is related to lacunar stroke at the brain transcriptome level. Conclusions Our present proteomic findings have identified ICA1L, CAND2, and ALDH2 as compelling genes that may give key hints for future functional research and possible therapeutic targets for lacunar stroke.

Abstract Background Identifying the causal genes at the risk loci and elucidating their roles in schizophrenia (SCZ) pathogenesis remain significant challenges. To explore risk variants associated with gene expression in the human brain and to identify genes whose expression change may contribute to the susceptibility of SCZ, here we report a comprehensive integrative study on SCZ. Methods We systematically integrated the genetic associations from a large-scale SCZ GWAS (N = 56,418) and brain expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) data (N = 175) using a Bayesian statistical framework (Sherlock) and Summary data-based Mendelian Randomization (SMR). We also measured brain structure of 86 first-episode antipsychotic-naive schizophrenia patients and 152 healthy controls with the structural MRI. Results Both Sherlock (P = 3. 38 × 10−6) and SMR (P = 1. 90 × 10−8) analyses showed that TYW5 mRNA expression was significantly associated with risk of SCZ. Brain-based studies also identified a significant association between TYW5 protein abundance and SCZ. The single-nucleotide polymorphism rs203772 showed significant association with SCZ and the risk allele is associated with higher transcriptional level of TYW5 in the prefrontal cortex. We further found that TYW5 was significantly upregulated in the brain tissues of SCZ cases compared with controls. In addition, TYW5 expression was also significantly higher in neurons induced from pluripotent stem cells of schizophrenia cases compared with controls. Finally, combining analysis of genotyping and MRI data showed that rs203772 was significantly associated with gray matter volume of the right middle frontal gyrus and left precuneus. Conclusions We confirmed that TYW5 is a risk gene for SCZ. Our results provide useful information toward a better understanding of the genetic mechanism of TYW5 in risk of SCZ.

Abstract Depressive disorders and internet addiction (IA) are often comorbid. The aims of this study were to examine the network structure of IA in patients with major depressive disorders (MDD) and explore the association between IA and quality of life (QoL) in this population. This was a multicenter, cross-sectional survey. IA and QoL were assessed with the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-brief version, respectively. Node expected influence (EI) was used to identify central symptoms in the network model, while the flow network of QoL was generated to examine its association with IA. A total of 1,657 patients with MDD was included. “Preoccupation with the Internet,” “Job performance or productivity suffer because of the Internet,” and “Neglect chores to spend more time online” were central symptoms. The symptom “Form new relationships with online users” had the strongest direct positive relation with QoL, while “Spend more time online over going out with others” and “Job performance or productivity suffer because of the Internet” had the strongest direct negative relations with QoL. Neglecting work caused by IA correlated with QoL, while making friends online appropriately was related to better QoL among MDD patients. Appropriate interventions targeting the central symptoms may potentially prevent or reduce the risk of IA in MDD patients.

BackgroundThere is an urgent need to identify differentiating and disease-monitoring biomarkers of schizophrenia, bipolar disorders (BD), and major depressive disorders (MDD) to improve treatment and management.MethodsWe recruited 54 first-episode schizophrenia (FES) patients, 52 BD patients, 35 MDD patients, and 54 healthy controls from inpatient and outpatient clinics. α-Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone (α-MSH), β-endorphin, neurotensin, orexin-A, oxytocin, and substance P were investigated using quantitative multiplex assay method. Psychotic symptoms were measured using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), manic symptoms using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and depressive symptoms using 17 item-Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD). We additionally measured cognitive function by using a battery of tests given to all participants.Resultsα-MSH, neurotensin, orexin-A, oxytocin, and substance P were decreased in the three patient groups compared with controls. Neurotensin outperformed all biomarkers in differentiating patient groups from controls. There were no significant differences for 6 neuropeptides in their ability to differentiate between the three patient groups. Higher neurotensin was associated with better executive function across the entire sample. Lower oxytocin and higher substance p were associated with more psychotic symptoms in FES and BD groups. β-endorphin was associated with early morning wakening symptom in all three patient groups.ConclusionOur research shows decreased circulating neuropeptides have the potential to differentiate severe mental illnesses from controls. These neuropeptides are promising treatment targets for improving clinical symptoms and cognitive function in FES, BD, and MDD.

Although childhood maltreatment has shown to be associated with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), previous studies have yielded mixed results in terms of different subtypes of childhood maltreatment and only few studies have investigated the effects of gender. Depression (DP) and schizophrenia (SCZ) are both highly prevalent psychiatric disorders, and their diagnosis depends on the examination of symptoms and clinical tests, which can be subjective. As a measure of real-time neural activity, Electroencephalographic (EEG) has shown its usability to classify people either as normal or as having DP or SCZ, but automatic classification between the three categories (DP, SCZ and the normal) was rarely reported. Here, we propose an automatic diagnostic framework based on a convolutional neural network called the Multi-Channel Frequency Network (MUCHf-Net), which automatically learns feature representations of EEGs that characterize them as normal, DP, or SCZ. Two EEG databases were used in this study, the first one contains EEGs from 300 individuals (DP: 100, SCZ: 100, normal: 100) collecting from our hospital, and the second contains EEGs from 30 individuals (DP: 10, SCZ: 10, normal: 10) from public available datasets, and the spectrum matrices from these multi-channel EEGs were feed into MUCHf-Net. The results showed that: (1) MUCHf-Net accurately distinguished normal EEGs from DP or SCZ EEGs (accuracy: 91.12%; F1 score: 0.8947); (2) low-frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha) contributed the most important information to the classification model; (3) features located in the frontal and parietal lobes contributed more than other regions did; (4) MUCHf-Net fine-tuned on public datasets also had high classification accuracy: 87.71% (triple: normal, SCZ or DP) and 79.27% (binary: psychiatric disorders (DP or SCZ) or normal). Our study shows that deep learning has the potential to become an important tool for assisting in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.

Background and aimsDepression often triggers addictive behaviors such as Internet addiction. In this network analysis study, we assessed the association between Internet addiction and residual depressive symptoms in patients suffering from clinically stable recurrent depressive disorder (depression hereafter).Materials and methodsIn total, 1,267 depressed patients were included. Internet addiction and residual depressive symptoms were measured using the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the two-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2), respectively. Central symptoms and bridge symptoms were identified via centrality indices. Network stability was examined using the case-dropping procedure.ResultsThe prevalence of IA within this sample was 27.2% (95% CI: 24.7–29.6%) based on the IAT cutoff of 50. IAT15 (“Preoccupation with the Internet”), IAT13 (“Snap or act annoyed if bothered without being online”) and IAT2 (“Neglect chores to spend more time online”) were the most central nodes in the network model. Additionally, bridge symptoms included the node PHQ1 (“Anhedonia”), followed by PHQ2 (“Sad mood”) and IAT3 (“Prefer the excitement online to the time with others”). There was no gender difference in the network structure.ConclusionBoth key central and bridge symptoms found in the network analysis could be potentially targeted in prevention and treatment for depressed patients with comorbid Internet addiction and residual depressive symptoms.

BackgroundAlthough sleep quality is clearly associated with job burnout as shown in the existing research, the mechanism underpinning such relationship remains undefined. This work, thus, aimed to assess the current situation of sleep quality and burnout in Chinese psychiatric nurses, and to analyze the relationships between sleep quality, burnout and coping style, in order to provide possible targets to enhance mental health and wellbeing among psychiatric nurses.MethodThis cross-sectional study was carried out in seven rehabilitation centers located in four different regions of China. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Epworth Sleeping Scale, the Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey, and the Coping Style Questionnaire were distributed to 853 nurses in various mental hospitals, with a total of 664 participants being recruited in the final research.ResultsThe results of this current study showed a high prevalence of sleep disorders and burnout in Chinese psychiatric nurses. Moreover, emotional exhaustion (r = 0.456), cynicism (r = 0.323) and negative coping style (r = 0.191) in nurses were all positively correlated with total Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score, while professional efficacy (r = −0.079) and positive coping style (r = −0.140) were negatively correlated with total PSQI score. More interestingly, of all negative coping strategies, we found that self-blame had the most significant effect (β = 0.156).ConclusionsThe above results showed that coping style mediates the association of poor sleep quality with job burnout in Chinese psychiatric nurses. This study claimed that there is an urgent need to development the coping skills to sustain a healthy work life for nurses.

Previous studies have revealed that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels are inversely associated with the severity of depressive symptoms. In addition, serum BDNF levels tend to increase with improvement in depressive symptoms. There is also evidence that BDNF has a possible role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether BDNF levels correlated with depressive symptoms in patients with first-episode and drug-naïve (FEDN) schizophrenia. In this study, 90 patients with FEDN schizophrenia and 60 healthy controls were recruited. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17) were used to gage psychopathological and depressive symptoms, respectively. All participants had their BDNF levels measured using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent test. Serum BDNF levels were lower in patients with FEDN schizophrenia compared with healthy controls. Moreover, patients with depressive symptoms exhibited a higher PANSS total score and a higher general psychopathology score than those without depressive symptoms (p < 0.05). For patients with depressive symptoms, serum BDNF levels were higher than in those without depressive symptoms (p < 0.05). An association between BDNF levels and the positive subscore was also observed (p < 0.01). However, there was no significant association between BDNF levels and HAMD scores (p > 0.05). In conclusion, BDNF levels were shown to be higher in the serum of patients with FEDN schizophrenia with depressive symptoms than in those without. Additionally, low levels of serum BDNF may contribute to the positive symptoms of FEDN schizophrenia but not to depressive symptoms.

BackgroundsSubclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) was reported to be associated with depression; however, its role in coexisting anxiety symptom in young patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) remains unclear. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between SCH and anxiety symptom in young first-episode and drug-naïve (FEDN) MDD patients.MethodsA total of 520 outpatients diagnosed as FEDN MDD with SCH were recruited in this study. Their socio-demographic, clinical data and thyroid function parameters were collected. The Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) were employed to measure the severity of anxiety symptom and depressive symptom, respectively. Based on the HAMA scores, patients who scored ≥ 25 were defined as anxious major depressive disorder (A-MDD) while others as non-anxious major depressive disorder (NA-MDD).ResultsThe prevalence rate of A-MDD was 15.8% in young FEDN MDD patients with comorbid SCH. Moreover, serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were significantly higher in patients with A-MDD compared with those with NA-MDD (p < 0.001). Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis indicated that A-MDD was associated with serum TSH levels with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.602. Serum TSH level of 6.17 mIU/L was the critical value to distinguish A-MDD and NA-MDD, with sensitivity of 0.805 and specificity of 0.539. There were no statistically significant differences between NA-MDD and A-MDD patients in terms of socio-demographic variables, serum free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), thyroid peroxidases antibody (TPOAb) and anti-thyroglobulin (TgAb) levels.ConclusionsA-MDD patients presented higher serum TSH level. It is suggested that serum TSH level may be a potential biomarker for predicting moderate and severe anxiety symptoms in young FEDN MDD patients with SCH.

This study examined the prevalence of fatigue and its association with overall quality of life (overall QOL) in clinically stable older patients with psychiatric disorders during the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods This was a multicenter, cross-sectional study. Fatigue, depressive symptoms, pain, insomnia symptoms, and overall QOL were assessed with standardized instruments. Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is a clinical subtype of MCI, which is known to have a high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Although neuroimaging studies have reported brain abnormalities in patients with aMCI, concurrent structural and functional patterns in patients with aMCI were still unclear. In this study, we combined voxel-based morphometry (VBM), amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFFs), regional homogeneity (Reho), and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) approaches to explore concurrent structural and functional alterations in patients with aMCI. We found that, compared with healthy controls (HCs), both ALFF and Reho were decreased in the right superior frontal gyrus (SFG_R) and right middle frontal gyrus (MFG_R) of patients with aMCI, and both gray matter volume (GMV) and Reho were decreased in the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG_L) of patients with aMCI. Furthermore, we took these overlapping clusters from VBM, ALFF, and Reho analyses as seed regions to analyze RSFC. We found that, compared with HCs, patients with aMCI had decreased RSFC between SFG_R and the right temporal lobe (subgyral) (TL_R), the MFG_R seed and left superior temporal gyrus (STG_L), left inferior parietal lobule (IPL_L), and right anterior cingulate cortex (ACC_R), the IFG_L seed and left precentral gyrus (PRG_L), left cingulate gyrus (CG_L), and IPL_L. These findings highlighted shared imaging features in structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), suggesting that SFG_R, MFG_R, and IFG_L may play a major role in the pathophysiology of aMCI, which might be useful to better understand the underlying neural mechanisms of aMCI and AD.

Study ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to determine the effects of daytime transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) in patients with depression.MethodsThe study was a double-blinded, randomized, controlled clinical trial. A total of 37 patients diagnosed with a major depression were recruited; 19 patients (13 females and 6 males mean age 44.79 ± 15.25 years) received tDCS active stimulation and 18 patients (9 females and 9 males; mean age 43.61 ± 11.89 years) received sham stimulation. Ten sessions of daytime tDCS were administered with the anode over F3 and the cathode over F4. Each session delivered a 2 mA current for 30 min per 10 working days. Hamilton-24 and Montgomery scales were used to assess the severity of depression, and polysomnography (PSG) was used to assess sleep structure and EEG complexity. Eight intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) were computed from each EEG signal in a channel. The sample entropy of the cumulative sum of the IMFs were computed to acquire high-dimensional multi-scale complexity information of EEG signals.ResultsThe complexity of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) EEG signals significantly decreased intrinsic multi-scale entropy (iMSE) (1.732 ± 0.057 vs. 1.605 ± 0.046, P = 0.0004 in the case of the C4 channel, IMF 1:4 and scale 7) after tDCS active stimulation. The complexity of the REM EEG signals significantly increased iMSE (1.464 ± 0.101 vs. 1.611 ± 0.085, P = 0.001 for C4 channel, IMF 1:4 and scale 7) after tDCS sham stimulation. There was no significant difference in the Hamilton-24 (P = 0.988), Montgomery scale score (P = 0.726), and sleep structure (N1% P = 0.383; N2% P = 0.716; N3% P = 0.772) between the two groups after treatment.ConclusionDaytime tDCS changed the complexity of sleep in the REM stage, and presented as decreased intrinsic multi-scale entropy, while no changes in sleep structure occurred. This finding indicated that daytime tDCS may be an effective method to improve sleep quality in depressed patients. BackgroundAccording to the integrated theoretical model, adolescents' behaviors were the outcome of the complex interplay between multiple levels. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious and high prevalent problem among adolescents with mood disorders. However, a systematic perspective on psychosocial correlates among Chinese clinical adolescents is still rare.MethodThe impact of several factors at the individual (i.e., sex, age, self-esteem, and psychological distress), family (i.e., family structure, family income, and family support), and social level (i.e., living environment, peer support, and teacher support) on the frequency of NSSI behaviors were investigated in the current study. This research included 621 Chinese adolescents with mood disorders from 20 hospitals.ResultsThree-steps hierarchical regression analyses indicated that lower levels of psychological distress and higher levels of self-esteem were most associated with less frequency of NSSI behaviors. In addition, family support was negatively associated with the frequency of NSSI behaviors. After controlling the factors at individual and family levels, no significant association was found between the factors at the social level and the frequency of NSSI behaviors.ConclusionThese findings provide preliminary support for the notion that adolescent self-esteem and family support may effectively shield them from problematic behavior; nevertheless, adolescents suffering from more emotional pain can be even riskier. Thus, further intervention strategies should consider the non-independence of individual capacities, co-combinatory effects of mood disorder, and family environment in treating those vulnerable Chinese adolescents.

Abstract Background During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Fangcang shelter hospitals were opened in Wuhan, China, to isolate and care for patients with mild or moderate symptoms. The patients and staff in the hospitals faced mental health challenges. This paper reports the experiences and mental health needs from them. Method Following the qualitative design, semi-structured interviews were conducted in the EastWest Lake Fangcang Shelter Hospital, Wuhan on March 2020. Data collection and analysis was based on grounded theory. Open coding was adapted and a structured codebook was developed through coding seminars. The themes and subthemes were then confirmed through thematic analysis. The findings were further explained and integrated in a theoretical framework. Results A total of 10 COVID-19 patients and 13 staff, including doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, and policemen participated in the interviews. They have common needs, as well as their own needs. The perspectives from the staff also did complement for needs of the patients. The mental health needs were generalized into four themes, that is, basic needs, information and communication, emotional needs, and social support, each with several subthemes. In addition, there were some external factors that regulated the internal needs, which were summarized in a theoretical framework. Conclusions The study indicates the directions on hospital management, mental health services, policy making, and social work to meet the mental health needs of the inpatients and staff from temporary shelter hospitals like Fangcang in Wuhan during the COVID-19 pandemic.

AimAccumulated evidence indicates that neurotrophin deregulations, oxidative stress injury, and mitochondrial dysfunction have been involved in bipolar disorder (BD); however, their real roles in BD are unclear. Investing the possible interaction between three systems is worthwhile understanding this complex process.MethodsWe measured plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level, leukocytes mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn), and activities of antioxidant enzymes in BD patients (n = 97) and healthy controls (n = 31). Analysis of variance and linear regression analyses were performed to explore the interaction between mtDNAcn, antioxidant enzymes, and BDNF.ResultsCompared with healthy controls, there were significant decreases of glutathione peroxidase activity, BDNF levels, and mtDNA content, significant increases of manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) activity among BD patients (all p < 0.05). Regression analysis showed MnSOD activity had a moderate effect on BDNF (beta = 0.23, t = 8.5, p = 0.001). Copper zinc SOD and total SOD activity were significantly correlated with Hamilton Depression Scale scores in depressive patients (r = −0.38, p = 0.013; r = −0.35, p = 0.022). Unexpectedly, we observed no significant correlation between mtDNA content and BDNF in BD patients (p > 0.05).ConclusionThe findings coincide with our hypothesis that abnormal antioxidant enzymes, mtDNAcn, and peripheral BDNF may be involved in the course of BD. There were significant correlations between peripheral BDNF, antioxidant enzyme activities and mtDNAcn, suggesting that oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and BDNF may influence each other in BD.

BackgroundEpidermal growth factor (EGF) is implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, suggesting possible value as a biomarker for disease severity or treatment response. However, basal EGF levels and changes during treatment are inconsistent across studies. The goal of this study is to compare serum EGF in schizophrenia patients before and after treatment with antipsychotics alone or combined with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).MethodPatients meeting DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia were recruited from June 2013 to December 2015 (n = 186) and followed up after 8 weeks of treatment with antipsychotics alone (n = 119, drug group) or combined with ECT (n = 67, ECT group). Serum EGF levels were measured by ELISA and compared among patients and 74 healthy control subjects. Psychopathology and clinical effects were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).ResultsBasal serum EGF was significantly lower in the entire patient cohort compared to healthy controls (P < 0.05). Repeated-measures ANOVA showed no main effect of time (F = 1.273; P = 0.261), time × group interaction (F = 1.228; P = 0.270), main effect of clinical response (F = 0.191; P = 0.663), or group × clinical interaction (F = 1.765; P = 0.186) on serum EGF. Serum EGF levels did not change significantly following antipsychotic drug or combined therapy (P > 0.05). Additionally, neither basal EGF nor EGF change was associated with the clinical response to drug or combined treatment (P > 0.05). However, baseline serum EGF was weakly associated with PANSS positive score (pretreatment: r = 0.206, posttreatment: r = 0.201) and general symptom score (pretreatment: r = −0.244). Serum EGF was also associated with duration of illness (pretreatment: r = 0.285, posttreatment: r = −0.231).ConclusionsSerum EGF concentration is low in schizophrenia but is unchanged following treatment with antipsychotics alone or combined with ECT, regardless of clinical response. Thus, serum EGF is not a surrogate biomarker for treatment response and is unlikely to be involved in the therapeutic mechanisms of antipsychotics or ECT.

Wave velocity under different pressure and temperature (PT) conditions plays an important role in the exploration of oil and gas reservoirs. We obtained the mineral composition and porosity of 20 underground sandstone and mudstone samples in Yinggehai Basin via X-ray diffraction and porosity measurements. Using high-frequency ultrasound, the P- and S-wave velocities of four samples under high temperature and overpressure conditions were found to vary significantly, owing to the material composition and porosity. According to the comparison between the experimental conclusion and the well-logging data, the genesis of false bright spot and dark spot gas reservoirs in the study area was analyzed. The variation in P-wave velocity under different temperature and pressure conditions was explained with the PT coefficient. The traditional pressure–velocity and temperature–velocity prediction methods were improved and applied to well-logging data. Herein, the velocity of P- or S-waves of sand and mudstone under high temperature and overpressure via rock physics experiments and the genesis of false bright spot and dark spot gas reservoirs in the Yinggehai Basin was observed. Overall, the results serve as a theoretical basis for seismic exploration in the study area.

Objective The aim of this study was to explore health anxiety (HA) in a sample of hospital medical employees and to identify factors that influence HA. Methods A consecutively recruited sample of 1702 medical employees with or without HA was obtained from 13 hospitals across China. Participants’ demographic and clinical characteristics were collected using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. Subjects were divided into a HA and non-HA group according to their scores on the Chinese version of the Short Health Anxiety Inventory. Comparisons between groups were conducted and binary logistic regression was used to identify risk factors of HA. Results Total HA prevalence was 30.14%. There were significant differences between the HA and non-HA groups in number of working years, hospital category, sex, marital status, family income, personality, physical disease and education degree. Working in a specialist hospital, being female, being married, low income, introversion, graduate education or above and presence of physical disease were risk factors of HA. Conclusions HA is common in medical employees. More investigation of the long-term impact of HA is warranted.
