Abstract Introduction Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Red blood cell indices (RBIs) are associated with CVD risk factors (CRFs) and easy to test, making them useful as a screening tool for early identification of individuals at high risk for CVDs. Methods Data from 31,781 participants in the China National Health Survey conducted from 2012 to 2017 were analyzed. Linear and non-linear relationships between RBIs and CRFs (hyperuricemia, diabetes, dyslipidemia) were assessed using restricted cubic splines. Abstract Objectives To explore the prevalence and associated factors of obesity in Tibetan adults in Qinghai, China, and to determine the association between the FTO (rs1121980 and rs17817449) and MC4R gene (rs17782313 and rs12970134) polymorphisms with obesity. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2015 in Qinghai to selected Tibetan adults aged 20 to 80 years. Prevalence of obesity (BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2) and overweight (BMI 24 ~ 27.9 kg/m2) were evaluated. Multivariable logistic models were used to determine the associated factors. Pair-matched subjects of obesity cases and normal-weight controls were selected for the gene polymorphism analyses. Conditional logistic models were used to assess the association between gene polymorphisms with obesity. Additive and multiplicative gene-environment interactions were tested. Results A total of 1741 Tibetan adults were enrolled. The age- and sex- standardized prevalence of obesity and overweight was 18.09% and 31.71%, respectively. Male sex, older age, heavy level of leisure-time exercise, current smoke, and heavy level of occupational physical activity were associated with both obesity and overweight. MC4R gene polymorphisms were associated with obesity in Tibetan adults. No significant gene-environment interaction was detected. Conclusion The prevalence of obesity and overweight in Tibetan adults was high. Both environmental and genetic factors contributed to the obesity prevalent.

Abstract Background Hand grip strength (HGS) is a powerful indicator of sarcopenia and other adverse health outcomes. Normative values for HGS for general Chinese people with a broad age spectrum are lacking. This study aims to establish normative values of HGS and explore the correlations between HGS and body composition among unselected people aged 8–80 in China. Methods From 2012 to 2017, 39 655 participants aged 8–80 years in the China National Health Survey were included. Absolute HGS was measured using a Jamar dynamometer. The relative HGS was normalized by body mass index. Body composition indexes included body mass index, body fat percentage, muscle mass, fat mass index (FMI) and muscle mass index (MMI). Sex‐specific smoothed centile tables for the P1, P5, P25, P50, P75, P95 and P99 centiles of HGS and body composition were generated using lambda‐mu‐sigma method. The correlations between muscle strength and body composition were estimated by partial Spearman correlation analysis. Results The median values (25th and 75th percentile) of HGS in boys and girls (8–19 years old) were 22 (14, 34) kg and 18 (12, 22) kg, respectively; in men and women aged 20–80 were 39 (33, 44) kg and 24 (20, 27) kg, respectively. Values of upper and lower HGS across ages had three periods: an increase to a peak in the 20 s in men (with the 5th and 95th values of 30 and 55 kg, respectively) and 30 s in women (with the 5th and 95th values of 18 and 34 kg, respectively), preservation through midlife (20s–40 s), and then a decline after their 50 s. The lowest HGS values in both sexes were in the 70‐ to 80‐year‐old group, with the 5th and 95th percentile values of 16 and 40 kg in men, and 10 and 25 kg in women. Abstract As the problem of spectral congestion is becoming severe, the coexistence between two primary spectrum users, radar and communications, has spurred extensive research interest. To reduce the mutual interferences between the two functions, MIMO radar waveform design needs to consider the compatibility in both spectral and spatial domains, where the former is achieved by null forming in the frequency domain and the latter is achieved by shaped beampattern synthesis. Additionally, high power efficiency and low system overhead are two desirable characteristics for MIMO radar system design. To this end, we first introduce a new realistic waveform constraint, peak-to-valley-power-ratio (PVPR) constraint per antenna to improve the power efficiency. Then, combined with PVPR constraint, we propose a switchable individual antenna power control scheme to jointly optimize waveforms and antenna locations. We adopt a max–min beampattern matching criterion and impose the $$\ell _{2,1}$$ ℓ 2 , 1 -norm penalty on the waveform matrix to promote the sparsity of the array. To solve the resultant non-smooth and non-convex problem, we develop a modified alternating directions method of multipliers, where a surrogate subproblem over primal variables is solved instead of the original problem, and its local convergence is analyzed. Finally, numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method over counterparts, especially obtaining the lowest sidelobe level and deeper spectral nulls using much fewer antennas.

Background: The relationship between muscle mass and fat mass might be an indicator to assess the cardiometabolic risk independently from overweight/obesity, but evidence from a representative general Chinese population is lacking. Objective: To understand the age- and sex-specific associations between muscle-to-fat ratio (MFR) and cardiometabolic risks in Chinese population. Methods: 31,178 (12,526 men and 18,652 women) subjects from the China National Health Survey were included. Muscle mass and fat mass were assessed by a bioelectrical impedance device. MFR was calculated as muscle mass divided by fat mass. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), serum lipids, fasting plasma glucose and serum uric acid were measured. General linear regressions, quantile regressions and restricted cubic-spline (RCS) regressions were applied to assess the effect of MFR on cardiometabolic profiles. Results: Per unit increase of MFR was associated with a 0.631 (0.759–0.502) mmHg SBP decrease in men, 2.648 (3.073–2.223) in women; 0.480 (0.568–0.392) mmHg DBP decrease in men, 2.049 (2.325–1.774) in women; a 0.054 (0.062–0.046) mmol/L total cholesterol decrease in men, 0.147 (0.172–0.122) in women; 0.084 (0.098–0.070) mmol/L triglycerides decrease in men, 0.225 (0.256–0.194) in women; a 0.045 (0.054–0.037) mmol/L low-density lipoprotein decrease in men, 0.183 (0.209–0.157) in women; a 2.870 (2.235–3.506) μmol/L serum uric acid decrease in men, 13.352 (14.967–11.737) in women; and a 0.027 (0.020–0.033) mmol/L high-density lipoprotein increase in men, 0.112 (0.098–0.126) mmol/L in women. The effect in overweight/obese people was much significant than in under/normal weight counterparts. The RCS curves revealed both linear and non-linear relationships between increased MFR and lower cardiometabolic risk. Conclusions: Muscle-to-fat ratio is independently associated with multiple cardiometabolic parameters among Chinese adults. Higher MFR is related with better cardiometabolic health, and the effect is much significant in overweight/obese people and women.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore spousal similarities in cardiovascular risk factors in northern China.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of married couples from Beijing, Hebei, Gansu, and Qinghai provinces between 2015 and 2019. A total of 2,020 couples were included in the final analyses. The spousal similarities for metabolic indicators and cardiovascular risk factors (including lifestyle factors and cardiometabolic diseases) were evaluated using Spearman’s correlation and logistic regression analyses, respectively.Results: All metabolic indicators showed positive spousal correlations (p < 0.001), with the strongest for fasting blood glucose (r = 0.30) and the lowest for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = 0.08). Significant husband-wife associations were observed for several cardiovascular risk factors except for hypertension in multivariable models, with the strongest association for physical inactivity (odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals of 3.59 [2.85, 4.52] and 3.54 [2.82, 4.46] for husbands and wives, respectively). In addition, the interaction of age with spousal overweight/obesity status was statistically significant, and the association was stronger in people ≥50 years.Conclusion: There were spousal similarities in cardiovascular risk factors. The finding may have public health implications that targeted screening and interventions for spouses of people with cardiovascular risk factors.

Linear motors are widely used in practical engineering fields, but it is difficult to achieve accurate position control because of model uncertainty, external interference, input nonlinearity and other factors. In this paper, a multidimensional Taylor network (MTN) controller with flexible learning robustness is proposed to realize tracking control and make the motor have excellent antijamming ability. The controller is composed of a robust feedback part, a parameter adaptive part and a multidimensional Taylor network control part. This strategy has good track tracking performance and anti-interference ability. In this control strategy, the input of the multidimensional Taylor network is determined only by the referable trajectories, and no model information is required. In addition, the designed multidimensional Taylor network can accurately describe the relationship between state variables and any complex disturbance, which is the basis of disturbance suppression. Finally, the stability of the controller is proved by the Lyapunov theorem. The unknown interference comparison experiment and numerical simulation experiment are carried out on the industrial linear motor platform, respectively. Experimental results show that compared with NNPID, the proposed algorithm has smaller overshoot and better performance under various error statistical dimensions.

Abstract Background Our study aimed to explore the prevalence and risk factors of refractive error (RE) in Han and Tibetan population aged 50–79 years in Xining and surrounding areas in Qinghai Province on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Methods As part of the China National Health Survey, our cross-sectional study compared the age-adjusted prevalence of RE in Han and Tibetan older adults aged 50–79 years in Xining and surrounding areas. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to identify risk factors for myopia and hyperopia. Results Among 769 Han participants and 476 Tibetan participants, the age-adjusted prevalence of myopia (spherical equivalent (SE) + 0.5D), high myopia (SE = 0.5D) is 28.56, 22.82, 2.80, and 69.38%. Shale gas enrichment is not only controlled by sufficient gas source but also by the intensity of later structural transformation.Gas volume is related to source rock quality and hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency, and the amount of shale gas generation depends on remaining hydrocarbon.Based on the identification and statistics of solid bitumen and the analysis of helium and carbon isotopes, the hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency, the in situ gas production of the Upper Ordovician Wufeng and Lower Silurian Longmaxi shales in Jiaoshiba and Pengshui exploration areas and its influence on shale gas enrichment were investigated. The hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency, residual oil volume and in situ gas volume for Jiaoshiba were 23%, 27.67 kg/t and 21.23 m3/t, while those values for Pengshui were 65%, 11.0 kg/t, and 18.99 m3/t, respectively, indicating differential hydrocarbon generation and expulsion related to various influence of the Indosinian Movement.According to the results of 4He isotope dating, Fuling shale gas began to be stored and accumulated at the initial stage (231 Ma) of the oil generation peak period with sufficient gas sources, while the closed system for Pengshui shale gas was formed at the later stage (183 Ma) than the gas generation peak with insufficient gas source. The δ13C2 and δ13C1-δ13C2 for Fuling shale gas were -35.8‰ and 4.8‰, while those values for Pengshui shale gas were -33.0‰ and 3.3‰, respectively.The different δ13C fractionation effects might be attributed to the distinct state of the hydrocarbon generation system. Therefore, the matching of the hydrocarbon generation peak period with the key structural transformation period in the process of hydrocarbon generation and evolution, the hydrocarbon retention amount in the maximum burial period and the structural transformation intensity in the process of uplift and denudation jointly controlled the generation, enrichment and preservation of shale gas.

Reproductive factors have been demonstrated to be associated with hyperuricemia. Body composition is an essential determinant influencing serum uric acid (SUA), but it is largely unknown whether increased SUA was influenced by changed body composition during the menopausal transition. As a secondary analysis of China National Health Survey from 2012-to 2017, this study included 18,997 women aged 20 to 80. Menarche age and menopause information were collected by questionnaire interview. Body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), fat mass index (FMI), and fat-free mass index (FFMI) were used as body composition indexes. Hyperuricemia was defined as SUA higher than 360μmol/L (approximately 6 mg/dl). Mediation analysis was performed to explore the direct and indirect effects of menopause on hyperuricemia. A 1:2 age-matched case-control data set (n=6202) was designed to control age-related confounders and was used in multivariable analyses. After adjustment of covariates, postmenopausal women had 14.08 (10.89-17.27) μmol/L higher SUA than their premenopausal counterparts. Overweight/obesity and higher levels of BFP, FMI, and FFMI were all found to be positively associated with hyperuricemia. The mediation analysis showed that the total effect of menopause on hyperuricemia was positive, but was substantially mediated by body composition indexes. Forty-five percent of the total effect can be attributed to the indirect effect mediated by BMI (OR for the natural indirect effect (NIE): 1.09, 95%CI: 1.04-1.13), and over 80% mediated by BFP (OR for NIE: 1.23, 95%CI: 1.16-1.29). However, FFMI did not present the mediated role in the association (OR for NIE: 0.99, 95%CI: 0.96-1.02). The findings revealed that body composition, especially the fat mass indexes, significantly mediated the association between menopause and hyperuricemia. The role of body composition as mediator constitutes clinical and public health significance that should be recognized and considered in healthcare for women experiencing their menopause transition.

Waldenström macroglobulinemia/lymphoplasmacytoid lymphoma (WM/LPL) is a rare lymphoproliferative neoplasm characterized by clonally related lymphocytes, lymphoplasmacytic cells, and plasma cell proliferation. WM/LPL patients commonly present with elevated immunoglobulin, predominantly immunoglobulin M (IgM). Previous studies reported that thyroid dysfunction was associated with the development and progression of solid tumors. However, only limited information is available on the correlation between thyroid complications and lymphoid malignancies. The aim of our study was to explore the prognostic significance of thyroid complications in WM/LPL. Herein, 13.3% of WM/LPL patients were diagnosed with thyroid complications, which were significantly associated with unfavorable progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and adverse treatment response. Co-existing thyroid disease was significantly related to alleviated serum IgM levels, providing an answer to practical problems. Furthermore, the presence of thyroid complications was identified as an independent prognostic indicator for PFS in WM/LPL. Incorporating the ISSWM score with thyroid complications was superior to ISSWM alone in risk stratification and prognostic prediction. Furthermore, subgroup analyses of WM/LPL patients revealed that subclinical hypothyroidism predicted undesirable outcomes at the early stage. These results were also supported by independent microarray dataset analyses. In conclusion, the primary strength of this study is that it provides robust real-world evidence on the prognostic role of thyroid complications, highlighting further clinical concerns in the management of WM/LPL patients.

Monitoring global greenhouse gas concentration information via satellite remote sensing has become a critical area of research to support the further understanding of global carbon emissions. The Greenhouse-gases Absorption Spectrometer-2 (GAS-2) is being developed as the primary payload of the Fengyun-3H (FY-3H), which will be launched in 2024. Achieving high-precision mesurements of greenhouse gases requires precise spectral calibration. However, currently, there is no method for assessing the detection accuracy of GAS-2 using spectral calibration light sources, and quantitative studies are lacking. In this study, the influence model of calibration light sources on spectral calibration accuracy is established, and the spectral radiance acquired via GAS-2 is simulated using the line-by-line radiative transfer model (LBLRTM). We investigated the impact of different linewidths and wavelength stabilities of the calibration light source on its accuracy in four wavelength bands. This study is the first to examine the effects of the linewidth and wavelength stability of a calibration light source on the spectral radiance acquired via GAS-2. The initial results demonstrate that if the linewidth of the calibration light source is approximately 100 MHz and the wavelength stability is in the order of subpicometers, the radiance error obtained by GAS-2 is less than 10%. Among the four bands, the 2.06 μm (strong-CO2) band is more affected by the calibration light source than the other three bands. In addition, the wavelength stability of the light source has a greater influence on the error than the linewidth of the light source under the same error condition. The research findings can be used to guide and reference the selection of light sources in the laboratory spectral calibration of GAS-2, ultimately contributing to the instrument’s quantitative development level.

Alcohol intake and excess adiposity are associated with serum uric acid (SUA), but their interaction effect on hyperuricemia (HUA) remains unclear. Using data from the China National Health Survey (CNHS) (2012–2017), we analyzed the additive interaction of beer, spirits intake, excess adiposity [measured by body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), and visceral fat index (VFI)] with HUA among male participants aged 20–80 from mainland China. The relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), the attributable proportion due to interaction (AP), and the synergy index (SI) were calculated to assess the interaction effect on the additive scale. Both RERI and AP larger than 0 and SI larger than 1 indicate a positive additive interaction. Among 12,592 male participants, the mean SUA level was 367.1 ± 85.5 μmol/L and 24.1% were HUA. Overweight/obese men who were presently drinking spirits had an odds ratio (OR) of 3.20 (95%CI: 2.71–3.79) than the never drink group, with RERI, AP, and SI of 0.45 (95%CI: 0.08–0.81), 0.14 (95%CI: 0.03–0.25), and 1.25 (95%CI: 1.02–1.54), respectively. However, although combined exposures on beer intake and excess adiposity had the highest OR compared with no beer intake and nonobese participants, there was no additive interaction, with RERI, AP, and SI in the overweight/obesity and the beer intake group of 0.58 (−0.41–1.57), 0.17 (−0.08–0.41), and 1.30 (0.85–1.97), respectively. Other excess adiposity indexes revealed similar estimates. Our findings suggested that the exposures of both excess adiposity and alcohol drink could result in an additive interaction effect on HUA: the combined risk of excess adiposity with spirits intake but not with beer was greater than the sum of the effects among Chinese male adults.

Adiposity and alcohol consumption are reported to be associated with a higher level of serum uric acid (SUA), but whether their effect differs on SUA percentile distribution is still unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate how alcohol intake and body fat percentage (%BF) integrated with body mass index (BMI) influence the distribution of SUA in Chinese adults. Data from the China National Health Survey (CNHS) which included adults from 10 provinces of China were used (n = 31,746, aged 20–80 years, 40% male). %BF and BMI were integrated into eight expanded body composition groups to understand how excess body adiposity affects the distribution of SUA in the populational level. Self-report alcohol intake information was collected by face-to-face questionnaire interview. Quantile regression (QR) was used to analyze the data. We found that adiposity and alcohol consumption were associated with SUA, especially at the upper percentile in both sexes. In obese men, the QR coefficients at the 75th and 95th percentiles were 74.0 (63.1–84.9) and 80.9 (52.5–109.3) μmol/L, respectively. The highest quartile of %BF in men had a 92.6 (79.3–105.9) μmol/L higher SUA levels at its 95th percentile than the 5th quartile (p < 0.001). Compared with normal or underweight with the lowest %BF group (NWBF1), the obesity-highest %BF group (OBBF4) had the strongest positive effect on SUA, especially at the higher percentile of SUA. In BMI-defined normal or underweight participants, a higher quartile of %BF had greater effect size in all SUA percentiles. In men, current alcohol drinking had the strongest effect at the 95th percentile of SUA (QR coefficient: 31.8, with 95% CI: 22.6–41.0) comparing with 14.5, 95% CI of 8.4 to 20.6 in the 5th SUA percentile. High risk of alcohol consumption had a greater effect on SUA, especially in the higher SUA percentile. The observation of stronger association at the higher percentile of SUA suggests that decreasing body adiposity and alcohol intake at the populational level may shift the upper tails of the SUA distributions to lower values, thereby reducing the incidence of hyperuricemia.

Free radicals are associated with aging and many diseases. Antioxidant peptides with good antioxidant activity and absorbability are one of the hotspots in antioxidant researches. In our study, pearl shell (Pinctada martensii) meat hydrolysate was purified, and after identification by proteomics, six novel antioxidant peptides SPSSS, SGTAV, TGVAS, GGSIT, NSVAA, and GGSLT were screened by bioinformatics analysis. The antioxidant peptides exhibited good cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) and the CAA of SGTAV (EC50: 0.009 mg/mL) and SPSSS (EC50: 0.027 mg/mL) were better than that of positive control GSH (EC50: 0.030 mg/mL). In the AAPH-induced oxidative damage models, the antioxidant peptides significantly increased the viability of HepG2 cells, and the cell viability of SGTAV, SPSSS, and NAVAA were significantly restored from 79.41% to 107.43% and from 101.09% and 100.09%, respectively. In terms of antioxidant mechanism by molecular docking, SGTAV, SPSSS, and NAVAA could tightly bind to free radicals (DPPH and ABTS), antioxidant enzymes (CAT and SOD), and antioxidant channel protein (Keap1), suggesting that the antioxidant peptides had multiple antioxidant activities and had structure–activity linkages. This study suggests that the antioxidant peptides above are expected to become new natural materials for functional food industries, which contribute to the high-value applications of pearl shell meat.

Introduction: The prevalence of hyperuricemia is increasing world widely; the understanding of population attributable faction of modifiable risk factors is important for disease prevention. Given the sparse evidence on how modifiable risk factors influence hyperuricemia in mainland China, we aim to explore the effect of excess weight and alcohol consumption and the population attributable fractions of hyperuricemia based on a national survey in mainland China. Methods: Using data from China National Health Survey which included 31746 Han Chinese aged 20-80 from ten provinces, we estimated the prevalence and modifiable risk factors (overweight/obesity and alcohol consumption)of hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid > 417 μmol/L in men and > 340 μmol/L in women. Restricted cubic spline models were used to demonstrate the linear and non-linear association between exposures and hyperuricemia. The adjusted population attributable risk (PAR) was calculated to understand the relative importance of each modifiable risk factor. Results: The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 25.1% in men and 15.9% in women. The population fraction of hyperuricemia cases that could be avoided by weight loss was 20.6% (19.2% to 22.0%) in men and 18.1% (17.1% to 19.0%) in women. The PAR of alcohol consumption was 12.8% (8.5% to 17.1%) in men. Participants from southwest China had the highest hyperuricemia prevalence (47.9% in men and 29.9% in women), but with lower PAR of modifiable risk factors, especially in men (16.7%). Subjects in North China had lower hyperuricemia prevalence but higher PAR of modifiable risk factors. 44.8% male hyperuricemia cases in Inner Mongolia (26.9% of hyperuricemia prevalence) and 37.7% cases in men from Heilongjiang (34.4% of hyperuricemia prevalence) were attributable to overweight/obesity and alcohol consumption. Conclusion: There are significant sex and geographic difference on population attributable risk of hyperuricemia due to modifiable risk factors. More tailored prevention strategies are needed to prevent hyperuricemia through weight loss and the reduction of alcohol consumption.

Podocyte injury plays an important role in diabetic nephropathy (DN), and apoptosis is one of its mechanisms. The transient receptor potential channel 6 (TRPC6) is expressed in podocytes and mediates podocyte injury induced by high glucose levels. Tacrolimus is a novel immunosuppressive agent that is reported to play an important role in podocyte protection. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential mechanism of podocyte protection by tacrolimus in a type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) rat model and in immortalized mouse podocytes (MPC5). Transmission electron microcopy was used to evaluate renal injury morphology. After treatment with FK506, we measured 24-hour urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratios and creatinine clearance rates as well as major biochemical parameters such as glucose, insulin, serum creatinine, urea nitrogen, total cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine transaminase, and aspartate aminotransferase. Nephrin and TRPC6 protein expression and podocyte apoptotic rates in vivo and in vitro were measured using immunohistochemical staining, TUNEL assays, and flow cytometry, respectively. Western blot was used to measure expression of cleaved-caspase-3 and bax/bcl-2. Exposed to high glucose (HG), DM rats exhibited disrupted biochemical conditions and impaired podocyte structure. Decreased expression of nephrin and increased expression of TRPC6, cleaved-caspase-3, and bax/bcl-2 ratios were found in podocytes, along with higher apoptotic percentage, while tacrolimus intervention counteracted the effect of HG on podocytes. Our results suggest that tacrolimus protects podocytes during the progression of type 2 diabetic nephropathy, possibly ameliorating podocyte apoptosis by downregulating the expression of TRPC6.
