The formation mechanism of a recrystallisation internal friction (IF) peak superimposed on a grain boundary (GB) IF peak for deformed copper was studied. The P1 peak, associated with the recrystallisation process, was observed at ∼ 599 K (2 K/min) during the first heating process. Subsequently, the P2 peak, located at ∼ 510 K (0.2 Hz), corresponded to GB relaxation during the cooling process. The P1 peak showed minor relaxation at higher frequencies owing to the influence of GB relaxation. To accurately determine the temperature of the P1 peak in this scenario, two methods were used: fitting the measured IF spectra and performing IF measurements at lower frequencies and/or with faster heating rates to minimise the impact of GB relaxation. This work investigated the formation mechanism of the recrystallisation peak and supplemented the method for determining the recrystallisation temperature through IF measurements when the GB peak occurs at a nearby temperature.

Abstract The voltage-gated calcium channel CaV1.2 is essential for cardiac and vessel smooth muscle contractility and brain function. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that malfunctions of CaV1.2 are involved in brain and heart diseases. Pharmacological inhibition of CaV1.2 is therefore of therapeutic value. Here, we report cryo-EM structures of CaV1.2 in the absence or presence of the antirheumatic drug tetrandrine or antihypertensive drug benidipine. Tetrandrine acts as a pore blocker in a pocket composed of S6II, S6III, and S6IV helices and forms extensive hydrophobic interactions with CaV1.2. Our structure elucidates that benidipine is located in the DIII-DIV fenestration site. Its hydrophobic sidechain, phenylpiperidine, is positioned at the exterior of the pore domain and cradled within a hydrophobic pocket formed by S5DIII, S6DIII, and S6DIV helices, providing additional interactions to exert inhibitory effects on both L-type and T-type voltage gated calcium channels. These findings provide the structural foundation for the rational design and optimization of therapeutic inhibitors of voltage-gated calcium channels.

Antioxidants are substances that have the ability to resist or delay oxidative damage. Antioxidants can be used not only for the diagnosis and prevention of vascular diseases, but also for food preservation and industrial production. However, due to the excessive use of antioxidants, it can cause environmental pollution and endanger human health. It can be seen that the development of antioxidant detection technology is important for environment/health maintenance. It is found that traditional detection methods, including high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, etc., have shortcomings such as cumbersome operation and high cost. In contrast, the nanozyme-based detection method features advantages of low cost, simple operation, and rapidity, which has been widely used in the detection of various substances such as glucose and antioxidants. This article focuses on the latest research progress of nanozymes for antioxidant detection. Nanozymes for antioxidant detection are classified according to enzyme-like types. Different types of nanozyme-based sensing strategies and detection devices are summarized. Based on the summary and analysis, one can find that the development of commercial nanozyme-based devices for the practical detection of antioxidants is still challenging. Some emerging technologies (such as artificial intelligence) should be fully utilized to improve the detection sensitivity and accuracy. This article aims to emphasize the application prospects of nanozymes in antioxidant detection and to provide new ideas and inspiration for the development of detection methods.

Neurodegenerative diseases are debilitating nervous system disorders attributed to various conditions such as body aging, gene mutations, genetic factors, and immune system disorders. Prominent neurodegenerative diseases include Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis. Insulin resistance refers to the inability of the peripheral and central tissues of the body to respond to insulin and effectively regulate blood sugar levels. Insulin resistance has been observed in various neurodegenerative diseases and has been suggested to induce the occurrence, development, and exacerbation of neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, an increasing number of studies have suggested that reversing insulin resistance may be a critical intervention for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Among the numerous measures available to improve insulin sensitivity, exercise is a widely accepted strategy due to its convenience, affordability, and significant impact on increasing insulin sensitivity. This review examines the association between neurodegenerative diseases and insulin resistance and highlights the molecular mechanisms by which exercise can reverse insulin resistance under these conditions. The focus was on regulating insulin resistance through exercise and providing practical ideas and suggestions for future research focused on exercise-induced insulin sensitivity in the context of neurodegenerative diseases.

Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) is an allotetraploid (AACC, 2n ​= ​38) crop, valued for its edible oil and protein content. seed yield and nutritional composition of rapeseed are influenced by its yield and oil quality traits. However, the genetic basis of yield-related and oil-quality traits remain ambiguous. A panel of 266 diversified oilseed rape accessions was genotyped using 223 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers covering all 19 chromosomes to identify significant markers associated with yield and quality traits. Twelve yield-related and six quality traits were investigated in two consecutive years (2014 and 2015), with three replications in two environments (Changshun, CS; and Qinghe, QH). Abstract Background Neurotransmitter release depends on the fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane and is mainly mediated by SNARE complex assembly. During the transition of Munc18-1/Syntaxin-1 to the SNARE complex, the opening of the Syntaxin-1 linker region catalyzed by Munc13-1 leads to the extension of the domain 3a hinge loop, which enables domain 3a to bind SNARE motifs in Synaptobrevin-2 and Syntaxin-1 and template the SNARE complex assembly. However, the exact mechanism of domain 3a extension remains elusive. Results Here, we characterized residues on the domain 3a hinge loop that are crucial for the extension of domain 3a by using biophysical and biochemical approaches and electrophysiological recordings. We showed that the mutation of residues T323/M324/R325 disrupted Munc13-1-mediated SNARE complex assembly and membrane fusion starting from Munc18-1/Syntaxin-1 in vitro and caused severe defects in the synaptic exocytosis of mouse cortex neurons in vivo. Moreover, the mutation had no effect on the binding of Synaptobrevin-2 to isolated Munc18-1 or the conformational change of the Syntaxin-1 linker region catalyzed by the Munc13-1 MUN domain. However, the extension of the domain 3a hinge loop in Munc18-1/Syntaxin-1 was completely disrupted by the mutation, leading to the failure of Synaptobrevin-2 binding to Munc18-1/Syntaxin-1. Conclusions Together with previous results, our data further support the model that the template function of Munc18-1 in SNARE complex assembly requires the extension of domain 3a, and particular residues in the domain 3a hinge loop are crucial for the autoinhibitory release of domain 3a after the MUN domain opens the Syntaxin-1 linker region.

Lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) is a commonly used early strength agent for sulfoaluminate cement based grouting materials. Low concentrations of Li2CO3 (≤30 μmol Li/g in sulfoaluminate cement) can significantly accelerate the early hydration of sulfoaluminate cement. However, the effect of high Li2CO3 concentrations (>30 μmol Li/g in sulfoaluminate cement) on the early hydration of sulfoaluminate-cement-based materials (SCBMs) is unclear. In this study, the effects of high concentrations of lithium ion (Li+) and carbonate ion (CO32) on the early hydration of SCBMs (C4A3S¯–CaSO4–CaO) with different mineral compositions (systems T1 and T2) were investigated by hydration calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and ion concentration measurements. The results revealed that both Li+ and CO32− promoted the hydration of C4A3S¯. Li+ and CO32− each reacted with aluminum and calcium in solution, and the formation of ettringite was suppressed when they were present. At low aluminum and high calcium concentrations in solution (system T1), ettringite formation was controlled mainly by the low concentration of aluminum. Less ettringite was generated, and the inhibition of ettringite formation by both Li+ and CO32− was weaker. At high concentrations of both aluminum and calcium in solution (system T2), ettringite formed more rapidly than in system T1, and Li+ and CO32− inhibited its formation to a greater extent. Li2CO3 affected the amount of ettringite by changing aluminum ion and calcium ion in slurry, thus leading to the change of hydration heat release. These new insights into the interaction between Li2CO3 and SCBMs contribute to the theoretical foundation for cement hydration control.

The specific damping capacity variation of heat-treated NiTi was observed during a pseudoelasticity test. The detailed B2 → R-phase transformation process in cold-drawn NiTi wires undergoing middle-temperature aging was studied via X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, and internal friction technique. Results show that, as aging time increased at 450 °C, the dynamic phase transition splitting from B2 → R to B2 → R1 and B2 → R2 became evident. However, such a splitting process was not observed for the sample after aging at 400 °C. The reason for R-phase generation is attributed to non-uniformly distributed stress fields. The splitting of the internal friction peak, in conjunction with high-resolution transmission electron microscope and mechanic results, suggests a substantial occurrence of short-range segregation of Ni atoms in the B2-NiTi matrix. Furthermore, the specific damping capacity (SDC) exhibits a gradual increase with prolonged annealing time. Specifically, the sample with significant dynamic phase transition splitting reaches an SDC value of 0.60.

A multi-wavelength pulse is generated using chemical vapor deposition method (CVD) to fabricate the topological crystalline insulator (TCI) Pb1-XSnXTe as a saturated absorber (SA). Compared with other SA materials, Pb1-XSnXTe have advantages of narrow bandgap and high optical absorption in the near-infrared region. The laser produced a stable four-wavelength lasing configuration characterized by a wavelength spacing of approximately 2 nm, with pulse duration, repetition rate, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 0.899 to 0.854 µs, 1.08 to 1.15 MHz, and 31.5 dB, respectively. The results indicate that the Pb1-XSnXTe-SA is suitable for pulsed generation in the near-infrared region and its potential in various fields, including super-resolution imaging, high-density optical storage, and three-dimensional laser lithography.

Owing to an additional thinner planar waveguide with micron scale is attracted to the symmetrical metal cladding waveguide (SMCW) with sub-millimeter scale, the interference interaction between different Q-value guided modes would generate a Fano reflectivity curve. In our double metal-dielectric-metal waveguides (DMDMW) structure, a Kerr nonlinear medium is located in the guiding layer of the SMCW where the excited oscillating wave is enormously enhanced. Numerical calculations show that a minute variation of the incident light intensity will give rise to a change in the dielectric constant of the Kerr nonlinear medium and lead to positive feedback. A bistable reflection can be achieved with a low threshold and a large modulation depth because of the sharpness and the asymmetricity of the Fano reflectivity curve.

Photodetectors based on two-dimensional materials exhibit excellent performance including high specific detectivity and fast response times. However, the polarization detection performance remains to be improved. Here, we propose a strategy to improve the polarization sensitivity of TlPt2S3-based photodetectors by defect engineering based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and investigate their optoelectronic properties using quantum transport simulations at 0.2 V bias. Theoretical calculations show that the monolayer TlPt2S3 achieves a multifunctional output of the optoelectronic device and obtains a larger photocurrent and high extinction ratio by defect engineering under linearly polarized light irradiation. These results indicate that TlPt2S3 is expected to be one of the candidate materials for future optoelectronics and polarized light devices.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the onset of symptoms, typically occurring later in life, and significant deficits in cognitive functions including learning, memory, speech, and behavior. Ongoing research endeavors seek to explore methods for preventing and treating AD, as well as delving into the molecular mechanisms underlying existing and novel therapeutic approaches encompassing exercise, diet, and drug regimens for individuals with AD or those at risk of developing AD. Among these interventions, dietary interventions have garnered increasing attention due to their potential in addressing the disease. Eating is among the most fundamental of human daily activities, and controlled dietary practices, such as fasting, have gained prominence as essential clinical methods for disease prevention and treatment. Research findings indicate that fasting holds promise in effectively alleviating and improving the cognitive decline associated with age or as consequence of disease. The clinical efficacy of fasting in addressing AD and related disorders might be grounded in its influence on various molecular mechanisms, including neuroinflammation, glial cell activation, insulin resistance, autophagy regulation, nerve regeneration, the gut microbiome, and accumulations of amyloid-β and tau proteins. The present study reviews possible molecular mechanisms underpinning the therapeutic effects of fasting in patients with AD, as well as in models of the disorder, to establish a theoretical basis for using fasting as a viable approach to treat AD.

Extremely low room temperature (RT) ductility and severe discontinuous yielding behavior is a key issue preventing the practical application of Fe–Ga based alloys as structural-functional integration materials in critical fields. Here, we report a combination of Al addition and mechanical treatment that results in RT ductility enhancement of Fe–Ga alloys without discontinuous yielding behavior, while retaining high damping capacities. It was found that the RT ductility of Fe-Ga-Al alloy sheets has a significant increase with increasing Al content and the discontinuous yielding behavior almost disappears, and the enhanced ductility is suggested to originate from the interaction of dislocations and the secondary phase. For Fe82Ga16Al2 alloy sheet, the maximal damping value can reach up to ∼0.041, and then damping capacity gradually decreases with increasing Al content but still remains at a high level. The mechanism of damping reduction is suggested to be caused by the limitation of domain wall motion caused by the additional domains generated inside the main domains. This study provides a reference for optimizing the RT ductility of Fe–Ga based alloys while taking into account the functional properties, and is beneficial for promoting the engineering applications of Fe–Ga based alloys as structural-functional integration components.

Due to friction vibration dampers’ inability to effectively dampen low loads during high-frequency dewatering, drum washing machines vibrated intensively. In order to address this problem, in this paper, a novel type of low-cost non-Newtonian fluid damper is proposed and investigated based on the non-Newtonian fluid shear thinning properties’ effect on vibration suppression during the high-frequency dewatering process of the washing machine. In contrast to other commonly used dampers, the homemade non-Newtonian fluid damper significantly suppresses the growth trend of the apparent elastic coefficient at high frequencies. A systematic investigation of damper structural parameters reveals that smaller gap height, higher piston head number, and more viscous fluid viscosity are adequate for vibration suppression and noise reduction. These results demonstrate that the non-Newtonian fluid damper can produce an excellent vibration-damping effect for the entire washing process of the washing machine, especially for the high-frequency dewatering process. The acceleration attenuation ratio can reach up to 83.49%, the energy attenuation is up to 98.44%, and the noise reduction is up to 10.38 dB.

A theoretical scheme to achieve a giant Goos-Hänchen shift with high reflectivity via double metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguides induced Fano resonance is proposed. Due to an additional thinner planar waveguide is attracted to the symmetrical metal cladding waveguide with sub-millimeter scale, the interference interaction between different Q-value guided modes would generate an asymmetric Fano reflectivity curve. Around the reflectivity peak of Fano curve, the phase of the reflected light changes rapidly and thus the Goos-Hänchen shift can be greatly enhanced without much attenuation. Numerical calculations based on the Gaussian model confirm the theoretical analysis and show that our enhancement scheme is not limited to TM polarization, which is different from the case of metal-dielectric multilayer Fano structure.

Two ferrite/martensitic (F/M) steels with different Si concentrations (0 and 0.4 wt.%) were irradiated by 250 keV He2+ ions with different fluences of 2 × 1016 ions/cm2 and 1 × 1017 ions/cm2. Transmission electron microscopy and a nanoindenter were employed to investigate their microstructure evolution and irradiation hardening effects induced by high-energy He2+ ions. A large number of He bubbles formed in the Si-free and Si-containing F/M steels, which preferentially nucleated and grew at the lath and phase boundaries. Owing to the inhibiting effect of Si addition on He bubble growth, the He bubbles in the Si-containing sample exhibited smaller size and higher density at the same He2+ fluence. Nanoindenter measurement revealed that typical irradiation hardening was observed in the F/M steel, and 1/2 and type dislocation loops formed by He2+ irradiation was recognized as the dominant mechanism. The addition of Si induced an increase in the number density of dislocation loops, leading to the exacerbation of the irradiation hardening, and the results are basically in agreement with the theoretical analysis based on the dispersion barrier hardening (DBH) and Friedel–Kroupa–Hirsch (FKH) models.

A methodology combining the asymmetrical metal-cladding waveguide (aSMCW) excited ultrahigh-order modes and coarse wavelength induced Vernier effect is theoretically proposed to enhance the sensitivity of the magnetic field sensor. In our aSMCW structure, a transparent glass SF11 with a sub-millimeter scale thickness is selected as the guiding layer, whose magnetically modulated refractive index leads to a variation of resonant wavelength. By controlling the sampling interval of tunable laser, the Vernier effect assisted resonant wavelength shift is more distinguishable and the sensitivity is enhanced about 20 times. Our sensitivity enhancement method is low cost since the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) with a fine resolution is needless.

Abstract Background Heterotopic pregnancy occurred after frozen embryo transfer with two D3 embryos, and the case had a history of bilateral salpingectomy due to salpingocyesis. An ectopic heterotopic pregnancy was implanted in the left psoas major muscle, which has not been previously reported. Case presentation A 33-year-old woman presented with left back pain after curettage due to foetal arrest in the uterus without vaginal bleeding and spotting, and painkillers relieved the pain initially. When the painkillers ceased to work, the patient returned to the hospital. The β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) level remained increased compared with the time of curettage, and a diagnosis of retroperitoneal abdominal pregnancy was suggested by ultrasonography and computerized tomography (CT) with the gestational sac implanted in the left psoas major muscle at the left hilum level. Laparotomy was performed to remove the ectopic pregnancy. During the operation, we carefully separated the adipose tissue between the space of the left kidney door and left psoas major muscle, peeled away the gestational sac that was approximately 50 mm × 40 mm with a 25-mm-long foetal bud, and gave a local injection of 10 mg of methotrexate in the psoas major muscle. Fifty days later, β-hCG decreased to normal levels. Conclusion It is necessary to pay more attention to the main complaints to exclude rare types of ectopic pregnancies of the pelvis and abdomen after embryo transfer.

Plastic deformation and fracture behavior of Cu/V nanoscale metallic multilayers (NMMs) were systematically investigated through in situ transmission electron microscopy testing. Two different types of interfaces: sharp interfaces and interfacial transition zones (ITZs), formed in the as-fabricated Cu/V NMMs. Upon deformation, sharp interfaces and ITZs exert distinct influences on the fracture behavior of Cu/V NMMs. Sharp interfaces can impede the crack propagation by deflecting the crack propagation and blunting the crack tip, while the ITZs can induce microcracks and facilitate the fracture process. These findings shed light on the important roles of interface structures in the deformation of a broad class of NMMs.

Climate change greatly affects spring and autumn plant phenology around the world consequently, and significantly impacts ecosystem function and the social economy. However, autumn plant phenology, especially autumn flowering phenology, has not been studied so far. In this study, we examined the spatiotemporal pattern of Osmanthus fragrans phenology, including both leaf phenology (the date of bud-bust, BBD; first leaf unfolding, FLD; and 50% of leaf unfolding, 50 LD) and flowering phenology (the date of first flowering, FFD; peak of flowering, PFD; and end of flowering, EFD). Stepwise multiple linear regressions were employed to analyze the relationships between phenophases and climatic factors in the long term phenological data collected by the Chinese Phenological Observation Network from 1973 to 1996. The results showed that spring leaf phenophases and autumn flowering phenophases were strongly affected by latitude. BBD, FLD, and 50LD of O. fragrans were delayed by 3.98, 3.93, and 4.40 days as per degree of latitude increased, while FFD, PFD and EFD in O. fragrans advanced 3.11, 3.26, and 2.99 days, respectively. During the entire study period, BBD was significantly delayed across the region, whereas no significant trends were observed either in FLD or 50LD. Notably, all flowering phenophases of O. fragrans were delayed. Both leaf and flowering phenophases negatively correlated with growing degree-days (GDD) and cold degree-days (CDD), respectively. BBD and FLD were negatively correlated with total annual precipitation. In addition to the effects of climate on autumn flowering phenology, we found that earlier spring leaf phenophases led to delayed autumn flowering phenophases. Our results suggest that future climate change and global warming might delay the phenological sequence of O. fragrans. Our findings also advanced the flowering mechanism study of autumn flowering plants, and facilitated the accurate prediction of future phenology and climate change.

The phase and polarization of electromagnetic waves can be conveniently manipulated by the dynamic phase and geometric phase elements. Here, we propose a compact optical integration of dynamic phase and geometric phase to generate arbitrary vector vortex beams on a hybrid-order Poincaré sphere. Two different technologies have been applied to integrate dynamic and geometric phase elements into a single glass plate to modulate the phase and polarization of light simultaneously. A spiral phase structure is made on one side of a glass substrate with optical lithography and a geometric phase metasurface structure is designed on the other side by femtosecond laser writing. The vector polarization is realized by the metasurface structure, while the vortex phase is generated by the spiral phase plate. Therefore, any desirable vector vortex beams on the hybrid-order Poincaré sphere can be generated. We believe that our scheme may have potential applications in future integrated optical devices for the generation of vector vortex beams due to its the high transmission efficiency and conversion efficiency.

Calcium-dependent synaptic vesicle exocytosis is mediated by SNARE complex formation. The transition from the Munc18-1/syntaxin-1 complex to the SNARE complex is catalyzed by the Munc13-1 MUN domain and involves at least two conformational changes: opening of the syntaxin-1 linker region and extension of Munc18-1 domain 3a. However, the relationship and the action order of the two conformational changes remain not fully understood. Here, our data show that an open conformation in the syntaxin-1 linker region can bypass the requirement of the MUN NF sequence. In addition, an extended state of Munc18-1 domain 3a can compensate the role of the syntaxin-1 RI sequence. Altogether, the current data strongly support our previous notion that opening of the syntaxin-1 linker region by Munc13-1 is a key step to initiate SNARE complex assembly, and consequently, Munc18-1 domain 3a can extend its conformation to serve as a template for association of synaptobrevin-2 and syntaxin-1.

This paper conducts a numerical study to prove the concept of a low-cost microfluidic-based strain sensor and investigates the key design parameters that affect the sensor sensitivity by using both theoretical and finite element models. The strain sensor is composed of an electrolyte-enabled microchannel integrated with a pair of interconnects and silicone-based packaging. The results show that the strain sensor has the highest sensitivity at the following chosen design parameters: the width and length of the primary microchannel are set at 0.2 mm and 20 mm, width ratio equals 2, and number of grid lines is 10.

Both Hippo signaling pathways and cell polarity regulation are critical for cell proliferation and the maintenance of tissue homeostasis, despite the well-established connections between cell polarity disruption and Hippo inactivation, the molecular mechanism by which aberrant cell polarity induces Hippo-mediated overgrowth remains underexplored. Here we use Drosophila wing discs as a model and identify the Wnd-Nmo axis as an important molecular link that bridges loss-of-cell polarity-triggered Hippo inactivation and overgrowth. We show that Wallenda (Wnd), a MAPKKK (mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase) family member, is a novel regulator of Hippo pathways in Drosophila and that overexpression of Wnd promotes growth via Nemo (Nmo)- mediated Hippo pathway inactivation. We further demonstrate that both Wnd and Nmo are required for loss-of-cell polarity-induced overgrowth and Hippo inactivation. In summary, our findings provide a novel insight on how cell polarity loss contributes to overgrowth and uncover the Wnd-Nmo axis as an essential additional branch that regulates Hippo pathways in Drosophila.

The strain profile in the subsurface of He-ion-irradiated W was figured out by unfolding the synchrotron-grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (S-GIXRD) patterns at different incidence angles. The results show that for 2 × 1021 ions/m2 He2+-irradiated W, in addition to a compressive strain exists in the depths of 0–100 nm due to mechanical polishing, an expansion strain appears in the depth beyond 100 nm owing to irradiation-induced lattice swelling. This work provides a reference for the study of irradiation damage in the subsurface by S-GIXRD.

Summary: During development, cells undergo multiple, distinct morphogenetic processes to form a tissue or organ, but how their temporal order and time interval are determined remain poorly understood. Here we show that the nuclear receptors E75 and DHR3 regulate the temporal order and time interval between the collective migration and lumen formation of a coherent group of cells named border cells during Drosophila oogenesis. We show that E75, in response to ecdysone signaling, antagonizes the activity of DHR3 during border cell migration, and DHR3 is necessary and sufficient for the subsequent lumen formation that is critical for micropyle morphogenesis. DHR3's lumen-inducing function is mainly mediated through βFtz-f1, another nuclear receptor and transcription factor. Furthermore, both DHR3 and βFtz-f1 are required for chitin secretion into the lumen, whereas DHR3 is sufficient for chitin secretion. Lastly, DHR3 and βFtz-f1 suppress JNK signaling in the border cells to downregulate cell adhesion during lumen formation.

Summary: During collective cell migration, front cells tend to extend a predominant leading protrusion, which is rarely present in cells at the side or rear positions. Using Drosophila border cells (BCs) as a model system of collective migration, we revealed the presence of a supracellular actomyosin network at the peripheral surface of BC clusters. We demonstrated that the Myosin II-mediated mechanical tension as exerted by this peripheral supracellular network not only mediated cell-cell communication between leading BC and non-leading BCs but also restrained formation of prominent protrusions at non-leading BCs. Further analysis revealed that a cytoplasmic dendritic actin network that depends on the function of Arp2/3 complex interacted with the actomyosin network. Together, our data suggest that the outward pushing or protrusive force as generated from Arp2/3-dependent actin polymerization and the inward restraining force as produced from the supracellular actomyosin network together determine the collective and polarized morphology of migratory BCs.

In this study, LiAl-layered double hydroxides Lithium aluminum hydrotalcite (LiAl-LDH) with different specific surface area were prepared by the separate nucleation and aging steps (SNAS) method and then were employed to prepare calcium sulfoaluminate cement-based grouting material (CBGM) paste. The influence of LiAl-LDH slurries on fresh and hardened properties of the CBGM paste was investigated in terms of fluidity, stability, setting time, and compressive strength. Additionally, the hydration process and hydration products of the CBGM paste were characterized by hydration heat, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis–thermogravimetry, and Fourier transform infrared analyses. The acquired results illustrated that LiAl-LDH with larger specific surface area led to a faster hydration rate at early age, a lower fluidity, a shorter setting time, and a higher stability. Furthermore, due to the crystal nucleation effect, the addition of LiAl-LDH slurries did not cause a new phase to form but changed the morphology and increased the amount of hydration products, yielding higher compressive strength.

Li2ZrO3-coated and Al-doped micro-sized monocrystalline LiMn2O4 powder is synthesized through solid-state reaction, and the electrochemical performance is investigated as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. It is found that Li2ZrO3-coated LiAl0.06Mn1.94O4 delivers a discharge capacity of 110.90 mAhg−1 with 94% capacity retention after 200 cycles at room temperature and a discharge capacity of 104.4 mAhg−1 with a capacity retention of 87.8% after 100 cycles at 55 °C. Moreover, Li2ZrO3-coated LiAl0.06Mn1.94O4 could retain 87.5% of its initial capacity at 5C rate. This superior cycling and rate performance can be greatly contributed to the synergistic effect of Al-doping and Li2ZrO3-coating.

Apolipoprotein N-acyl transferase (Lnt) catalyses the final step in the protein lipidation pathway of Gram-negative bacteria. Here, the authors present the crystal structure ofE. coliLnt, which consists of a transmembrane domain and a nitrilase domain localised at the periplasmic side of the membrane.

A sensitivity analysis of absorption sensing based on the symmetrical metal-cladding waveguide is presented. The calculated reflectivity curve shows that any minute variation of the extinction coefficient due to absorption of the sample will easily give rise to a dramatic change in the minimum reflectivity. It is found that thickness of the metal coupling film is a critical factor. With a thin metal coupling film, the minimum reflectivity decreases at first, reaches zero, and then increases gradually when extinction coefficient of the sample increases. However, in another case, the minimum reflectivity always increases as an increasing extinction coefficient of the sample. These characteristics are explained in terms of comparison between the intrinsic and radiative dampings, which are derived in an analytic form by using the first-order perturbation theory. A proof-of-concept experiment, that is, absorption sensing the methylene blue concentration, is also given.

Multiple subtypes of dopamine receptors within the GPCR superfamily regulate neurological processes through various downstream signaling pathways. A crucial question about the dopamine receptor family is what structural features determine the subtype-selectivity of potential drugs. Here, we report the 3.5-angstrom crystal structure of mouse dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) complexed with a subtype-selective antagonist, L745870. Our structure reveals a secondary binding pocket extended from the orthosteric ligand-binding pocket to a DRD4-specific crevice located between transmembrane helices 2 and 3. Additional mutagenesis studies suggest that the antagonist L745870 prevents DRD4 activation by blocking the relative movement between transmembrane helices 2 and 3. These results expand our knowledge of the molecular basis for the physiological functions of DRD4 and assist new drug design.

Interleaving technique is an efficient technique to resist serious burst errors over mobile wireless fading channels.To resist 2 dimensionality burst errors effectively,a novel chaotic interleaving algorithm based on Baker map was proposed.In the proposed scheme,the binary source sequence was converted to the data matrix,and then the data matrix was dispersed randomly by using the chaotic Baker map approach,in order to realize the function of transforming 2 dimensionality long bust error into the short 1 dimensionality short bust error after de-interleaving.In additional,the proposed algorithm was combined with the convolution code based on Viterbi decoding,and was applied into the scenario of convolutional codes (2,1,3) and the scenario of (2,1,7) separately for a performance comparison.The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm outperforms better than the traditional algorithms under image transmission over mobile wireless channel.Moreover,the anti-fading capability of the proposed algorithm grows as the packet length increases,while reducing the complexity significantly.Finally,the chaotic interleaver can also enhance every transmitted packet's security with different secret keys.

There are discrete optimization problems for spectrum allocation in cognitive wireless network.A novel combinatorial optimization algorithm called quantum cuckoo search algorithm （QCSA）was proposed,which was based on quantum computing and cuckoo search algorithm.The quantum nest was used to represent multiple dimensionality solution for the optimization problem,and the global optimal position was found according to Lévy flights and quantum mutation strategy.In additional,some classical benchmark functions were employed to prove the effectiveness of QCSA,and a spectrum allocation method based on QCSA was proposed for cognitive network.Compared with classical spectrum allocation methods by using different network utility functions,the global optimal solution can be searched so fast.Simulation results show that the proposed spectrum allocation method based on QCSA is better than other traditional methods under different network utility functions.

Bacterial lipoproteins have important biological functions, and the lipoprotien biogenesis enzyme Lgt is essential in most gram-negative bacteria. Here, the authors use structural and biochemical techniques to shed light on the function of Lgt in post-translational transacylation modification.

In the traditional standard of internal friction measurement the torsion pendulum and vibration reed were preferentially recommended where the issue of strain amplitude dependence of internal friction was not concerned. To more precisely measure the internal friction and modulus at various strain amplitude, in this paper the strain amplitude dependence of internal friction and modulus is considered by analyzing the stress distribution in the sample in different internal friction measurement methods. The formulas for the measurement of internal friction and modulus versus strain-amplitude are obtained by re-deriving the principal equations for internal friction and modulus measurements by torsion pendulum and vibration reed methods from the basic definition of internal friction. This provides a new standard for precise measurement of internal friction at different strain-amplitude in the cases of high strain-amplitude excitation or high damping materials where amplitude dependent effects always appear.

Tungsten fibre nets reinforced tungsten composites (Wf/W) containing four net layers were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS), hot pressing (HP) and cold rolling after HP (HPCR), with the weight fraction of fibres being 17.4%, 10.5% and 10.5%, respectively. The relative density of the HPCRed samples is the highest (99.8%) while that of the HPed composites is the lowest (95.1%). Optical and scanning electron microscopy and electron back scattering diffraction were exploited to characterize the microstructure, while tensile and hardness tests were used to evaluate the mechanical properties of the samples. It was found that partial recrystallization of fibres occurred after the sintering at 1800 °C. The SPSed and HPed Wf/W composites begin to exhibit plastic deformation at 600 °C with tensile strength (TS) of 536 and 425 MPa and total elongation at break (TE) of 11.6% and 23.0%, respectively, while the HPCRed Wf/W composites exhibit plastic deformation at around 400 °C. The TS and TE of the HPCRed Wf/W composites at 400 °C are 784 MPa and 8.4%, respectively. The enhanced mechanical performance of the Wf/W composites over the pure tungsten can be attributed to the necking, cracking, and debonding of the tungsten fibres.

High-molecular-weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS) is a primary determinant of processing quality of wheat. Considerable progress has been made in understanding the structure, function and genetic regulation of HMW-GS in wheat and some of its related species, but less is known about their orthologs in Agropyron intermedium, a useful related species for wheat improvement. Here seven HMW-GSs in Ag. intermedium were identified using SDS-PAGE and Western blotting experiments. Subsequently, the seven genes (Glu-1Aix1 ∼ 4 and Glu-1Aiy1 ∼ 3) encoding the seven HMW-GSs were isolated using PCR technique with degenerate primers, and confirmed by bacterial expression and Western blotting. Sequence analysis indicated that the seven Ag. intermedium HMW-GSs shared high similarity in primary structure to those of wheat, but four of the seven subunits were unusually small compared to the representatives of HMW-GS from wheat and two of them possessed extra cysteine residues. The alignment and clustering analysis of deduced amino acid sequences revealed that 1Aix1 and 1Aiy1 subunits had special molecular structure, belonging to the hybrid type compounding between typical x- and y-type subunit. The xy-type subunit 1Aix1 is composed of the N-terminal of x-type and C-terminal of y-type, whereas yx-type subunit 1Aiy1 comprises the N-terminal of y-type and C-terminal of x-type. This result strongly supported the hypothesis of unequal crossover mechanism that might generate the novel coding sequence for the hybrid type of HMW-GSs. In addition to the aforementioned, the other novel characteristics of the seven subunits were also discussed. Finally, phylogenetic analysis based on HMW-GS genes was carried out and provided new insights into the evolutionary biology of Ag. intermedium.
