Abstract

Based on the basic principle of biomineralization, hydroxyapatite fiber (HAF) with high crystallinity was fabricated via a hydrothermal route with Ca(NO3)2·4H2O and (NH4)2HPO4 as the resources, respectively. Effects of the addition of acidic amino acid L-glutamic acid (Glu), neutral amino acid L-phenylalanine (Phe) and basic amino acid L-lysine (Lys) on the phase composition and morphology of the obtained products were laid special emphasis on. The results show that the products obtained by using the three amino acids are all hydroxyapatite (HA) phase with minor CaCO3 in some samples. Meanwhile, all of the amino acids inhibit the growth of the fibers. Spherical morphology exists when Glu is added, the homogeneity of the fibers deteriorates with the addition of Lys. However, rod-like fibers with good uniformity can be obtained with the addition of Phe.

Abstract

The doping of cerium (Ce) into hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals has been shown to impart antibacterial properties. In this study, ultralong flexible Ce-substituted HA (Ce–HA) nanofibers decorated by CePO4 nanoparticles are synthesized using a solvothermal method. The obtained products predominantly consist of nanofibers, while the number of CePO4 nanoparticles attached to the nanofiber surfaces gradually increase and partially agglomerate as the Ce molar fraction (0–8 at%) increases. The Ce ions are doped into the HA lattice in mixed valences of Ce3+ and Ce4+, which significantly increases grain size and crystallinity of Ce–HA nanofibers. Furthermore, the effect of Ce3+ doping on formation mechanism of the samples is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Magnesium phosphate (MgP) has garnered growing interest in hard tissue replacement processes due to having similar biological characteristics to calcium phosphate (CaP). In this study, an MgP coating with the newberyite (MgHPO4·3H2O) was prepared on the surface of pure titanium (Ti) using the phosphate chemical conversion (PCC) method. The influence of reaction temperature on the phase composition, microstructure, and properties of coatings was systematically researched with the use of an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM), a contact angle goniometer, and a tensile testing machine. The formation mechanism of MgP coating on Ti was also explored. In addition, the corrosion resistance of the coatings on Ti was researched by assessing the electrochemical behavior in 0.9% NaCl solution using an electrochemical workstation. The results showed that temperature did not obviously affect the phase composition of the MgP coatings, but affected the growth and nucleation of newberyite crystals. In addition, an increase in reaction temperature had a great impact on properties including surface roughness, thickness, bonding strength, and corrosion resistance. Higher reaction temperatures resulted in more continuous MgP, larger grain size, higher density, and better corrosion resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
