Abstract

Recent work has demonstrated that Bayesian neural networks (BNN's) trained with mean field variational inference (MFVI) can be implemented in analog hardware, promising orders of magnitude energy savings compared to the standard digital implementations. However, while Gaussians are typically used as the variational distribution in MFVI, it is difficult to precisely control the shape of the noise distributions produced by sampling analog devices. This paper introduces a method for MFVI training using real device noise as the variational distribution. Furthermore, we demonstrate empirically that the predictive distributions from BNN's with the same weight means and variances converge to the same distribution, regardless of the shape of the variational distribution. Abstract

Edge devices are being deployed at increasing volumes to sense and act on information from the physical world. The discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is often necessary to make this sensed data suitable for further processing $\unicode{x2013}$ such as by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms $\unicode{x2013}$ and for transmission over communication networks. Analog in-memory computing has been shown to be a fast and energy-efficient solution for processing edge AI workloads, but not for Fourier transforms. This is because of the existence of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm, which enormously reduces the complexity of the DFT but has so far belonged only to digital processors. Here, we show that the FFT can be mapped to analog in-memory computing systems, enabling them to efficiently scale to arbitrarily large Fourier transforms without requiring large sizes or large numbers of non-volatile memory arrays. We experimentally demonstrate analog FFTs on 1D audio and 2D image signals, using a large-scale charge-trapping memory array with precisely tunable, low-conductance analog states. The scalability of both the new analog FFT approach and the charge-trapping memory device is leveraged to compute a 65,536-point analog DFT, a scale that is otherwise inaccessible by analog systems and which is $>$1000$\times$ larger than any previous analog DFT demonstration. The analog FFT also provides more numerically precise DFTs with greater tolerance to device and circuit non-idealities than a direct matrix-vector multiplication approach. We show that the extension of the FFT algorithm to analog in-memory processors leads to design considerations that differ markedly from digital implementations, and that analog Fourier transforms have a substantial power efficiency advantage at all size scales over FFTs implemented on state-of-the-art digital hardware.

Abstract

We report on the first measurement of $J/\psi$ photoproduction from nuclei in the photon energy range of $7$ to $10.8$ GeV, extending above and below the photoproduction threshold in the free proton of $\sim8.2$ GeV. The experiment used a tagged photon beam incident on deuterium, helium, and carbon, and the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab to measure the semi-inclusive $A(\gamma,e^+e^-p)$ reaction with a dilepton invariant mass $M(e^+e^-)\sim m_{J/\psi}=3.1$ GeV. The incoherent $J/\psi$ photoproduction cross sections in the measured nuclei are extracted as a function of the incident photon energy, momentum transfer, and proton reconstructed missing light-cone momentum fraction. Comparisons with theoretical predictions assuming a dipole form factor allow extracting a gluonic radius for bound protons of $\sqrt{\langle r^2\rangle}=0.85\pm0.14$ fm. The data also suggest an excess of the measured cross section for sub-threshold production and for interactions with high missing light-cone momentum fraction protons. The measured enhancement can be explained by modified gluon structure for high-virtuality bound-protons.

Abstract

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. Hierarchical architecture growth mimicking biomineralization has been studied using various organic molecules to template inorganic materials with controlled morphology. In our previous study, self-assembled Sr/CS/G(SrCO3-chitosan-gelatin) aggregates were fabricated using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). This study is a further step toward understanding the morphogenesis of Sr/CS/G aggregates and its biomineralization.Methods: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the biomimetic morphogenesis of Sr/CS/G composite under various EPD parameters, such as polymer concentration, time, and voltage. The Sr/CS/G aggregates were immersed in H2O, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and simulated body fluid (SBF) to study the bioactive apatite formation ability. In addition, biocompatibility of the composites were evaluated by Fluorescence staining, SEM in vitro. The osteogenic ability of the coatings induced by PBS were tested in vivo.Results: The CS/G weight ratio, EPD time, and voltage were found to influence the morphogenesis of Sr/CS/G aggregates. SEM and TEM results showed that the Sr/CS/G aggregates exhibited fractal growth characteristics and morphological self-similarity. XRD results confirmed the formation of SrCO3 crystals within the framework of chitosan and gelatin organic templates. Chitosan played a vital role in branching growth of the crystals, whereas gelatin guided the formation of composite spheres. The microstructural and compositional results reveal that the Sr/CS/G-induced apatite coating yielded a large quantity of apatite. These apatite coatings promote the cytocompatibility and osteogenesis of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) in vitro. The coatings induced by PBS enhanced proliferation and mineralization in vitro, and enhanced angiogenesis and osteogenesis in vivo.Conclusion: Sr/CS/G composites prepared via EPD are promising organic-inorganic templates for biomineralization. Abstract

Metaphyseal cones are frequently used in revision total knee arthroplasties (TKAs). However, during subsequent aseptic re-revisions, removing a well-fixed cone can be difficult. One innovative option is to retain the well-fixed cone and cement a new, stemmed revision component through the retained cone, yet minimal data exist on this technique. We describe a technique for retaining a well-fixed cone during re-revision TKA and report outcomes in 6 patients with 6 well-fixed metaphyseal cones. At a mean of 4 years follow-up, no retained cones with a new femoral or tibial component with stems were revised and there was no radiographic evidence of aseptic loosening. These early data suggest that retaining a well-fixed cone can be safe in re-revision TKA to minimize morbidity associated with cone removal. Level of evidence: IV (retrospective study).

Abstract

The domain wall-magnetic tunnel junction (DW-MTJ) is a versatile device that can simultaneously store data and perform computations. These three-terminal devices are promising for digital logic due to their nonvolatility, low-energy operation, and radiation hardness. Here, we augment the DW-MTJ logic gate with voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) to improve the reliability of logical concatenation in the presence of realistic process variations. VCMA creates potential wells that allow for reliable and repeatable localization of domain walls. The DW-MTJ logic gate supports different fanouts, allowing for multiple inputs and outputs for a single device without affecting area. We simulate a systolic array of DW-MTJ Multiply-Accumulate (MAC) units with 4-bit and 8-bit precision, which uses the nonvolatility of DW-MTJ logic gates to enable fine-grained pipelining and high parallelism. The DW-MTJ systolic array provides comparable throughput and efficiency to state-of-the-art CMOS systolic arrays while being radiation-hard. Abstract

Neural networks have revolutionized the field of machine learning with increased predictive capability. In addition to improving the predictions of neural networks, there is a simultaneous demand for reliable uncertainty quantification on estimates made by machine learning methods such as neural networks. Bayesian neural networks (BNNs) are an important type of neural network with built-in capability for quantifying uncertainty. This paper discusses aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty in BNNs and how they can be calculated. With an example dataset of images where the goal is to identify the amplitude of an event in the image, it is shown that epistemic uncertainty tends to be lower in images which are well-represented in the training dataset and tends to be high in images which are not well-represented. An algorithm for out-of-distribution (OoD) detection with BNN epistemic uncertainty is introduced along with various experiments demonstrating factors influencing the OoD detection capability in a BNN. Abstract

The evolution of the dust grain size distribution has been studied in recent years with great detail in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations taking into account all the channels under which dust evolves in the interstellar medium. We present a systematic analysis of the observed spectral energy distribution of a large sample of galaxies in the local universe in order to derive not only the total dust masses but also the relative mass fraction between small and large dust grains (DS/DL). Simulations reproduce fairly well the observations except for the high stellar mass regime where dust masses tend to be overestimated. We find that ~45% of galaxies exhibit DS/DL consistent with the expectations of simulations, while there is a sub-sample of massive galaxies presenting high DS/DL (log(DS/DL)~-0.5), and deviating from the prediction in simulations. For these galaxies, which also have high molecular gas mass fractions and metallicities, coagulation is not an important mechanism affecting the dust evolution. Including diffusion, transporting large grains from dense regions to a more diffuse medium where they can be easily shattered, would explain the observed high DS/DL values in these galaxies. With this study we reinforce the use of the small-to-large grain mass ratio to study the relative importance of the different mechanisms in the dust life cycle. Multi-phase hydrodynamical simulations with detailed feedback prescriptions and more realistic subgrid models for the dense phase could help to reproduce the evolution of the dust grain size distribution traced by observations., Comment: 32 pages, 22 figures, 4 tables. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of engineered exosomes in overexpressing Growth Differentiation Factor-15 (GDF-15) (GDF15-EVs) after myocardial injury, and their molecular mechanisms in cardiac repair.Methods: H9C2 cells were transfected with GDF-15 lentivirus or negative control. The exosomes secreted from H9C2 cells were collected and identified. The cellular apoptosis and autophagy of H2O2-injured H9C2 cells were assessed by Western blotting, TUNEL assay, electron microscopy, CCK-8 and caspase 3/7 assay. A rat model of AMI was constructed by ligating the left anterior descending artery. The anti-apoptotic, pro-angiogenic effects of GDF15-EVs treatment, as well as ensuing functional and histological recovery were evaluated. Then, mRNA sequencing was performed to identify the differentially expressed mRNAs after GDF15-EVs treatment.Results: GDF15-EVs inhibited apoptosis and promoted autophagy in H2O2 injured H9C2 cells. GDF15-EVs effectively decreased the infarct area and enhanced the cardiac function in rats with AMI. Moreover, GDF15-EVs hindered inflammatory cell infiltration, inhibited cell apoptosis, and promoted cardiac angiogenesis in rats with AMI. RNA sequence showed that telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) mRNA was upregulated in GDF15-EVs-treated H9C2 cells. AMPK signaling was activated after GDF15-EVs. Silencing TERT impaired the protective effects of GDF15-EVs on H2O2-injured H9C2 cells.Conclusion: GDF15-EVs could fulfil their protective effects against myocardial injury by upregulating the expression of TERT and activating the AMPK signaling pathway. From December 2012 to June 2021, patients with AMI were enrolled and divided into AKI group and non-AKI group. The NEUT% in the two groups was compared. The association between NEUT% with the risk of post-AMI AKI was analyzed by univariate and multivariable logistic regression. Kaplan-Meier survival curve was drawn to evaluate the prognostic ability of NEUT% for short-term all-cause death following AMI.Results: A total of 3001 consecutive patients were enrolled with an average age of 64.38 years. AKI occurred in 327 (10.9%) patients. The NEUT% was higher in the AKI group than in the non-AKI group ([76.65± 11.43]% versus [73.22± 11.83]%, P< 0.001). NEUT% was also identified as an independent risk factor for AKI in AMI patients after adjustment (OR=1.021, 95% CI: 1.010– 1.033, P < 0.001). Compared with those at the lowest quartile of NEUT%, the patients at quartiles 2– 4 had a higher risk of AKI (P for trend = 0.003). The odds of AKI increased by 29.0% as NEUT% increased by 1 standard deviation (OR=1.290, 95% CI: 1.087– 1.531, P = 0.004). After a median of 35 days follow-up, 93 patients died. Patients with a higher NEUT% presented a higher risk of all-cause death after AMI (Log rank: χ2 =24.753, P< 0.001).Conclusion: In AMI patients, the peripheral blood NEUT% was positively associated with the odds of AKI and short-term all-cause mortality. Abstract

CMOS-based computing systems that employ the von Neumann architecture are relatively limited when it comes to parallel data storage and processing. In contrast, the human brain is a living computational signal processing unit that operates with extreme parallelism and energy efficiency. Although numerous neuromorphic electronic devices have emerged in the last decade, most of them are rigid or contain materials that are toxic to biological systems. In this work, we report on biocompatible bilayer graphene-based artificial synaptic transistors (BLAST) capable of mimicking synaptic behavior. The BLAST devices leverage a dry ion-selective membrane, enabling long-term potentiation, with ~50 aJ/m^2 switching energy efficiency, at least an order of magnitude lower than previous reports on two-dimensional material-based artificial synapses. The devices show unique metaplasticity, a useful feature for generalizable deep neural networks, and we demonstrate that metaplastic BLASTs outperform ideal linear synapses in classic image classification tasks. With switching energy well below the 1 fJ energy estimated per biological synapse, the proposed devices are powerful candidates for bio-interfaced online learning, bridging the gap between artificial and biological neural networks.

Abstract

In neuromorphic computing, artificial synapses provide a multi-weight conductance state that is set based on inputs from neurons, analogous to the brain. Additional properties of the synapse beyond multiple weights can be needed, and can depend on the application, requiring the need for generating different synapse behaviors from the same materials. Here, we measure artificial synapses based on magnetic materials that use a magnetic tunnel junction and a magnetic domain wall. By fabricating lithographic notches in a domain wall track underneath a single magnetic tunnel junction, we achieve 4-5 stable resistance states that can be repeatably controlled electrically using spin orbit torque. We analyze the effect of geometry on the synapse behavior, showing that a trapezoidal device has asymmetric weight updates with high controllability, while a straight device has higher stochasticity, but with stable resistance levels. The device data is input into neuromorphic computing simulators to show the usefulness of application-specific synaptic functions. Implementing an artificial neural network applied on streamed Fashion-MNIST data, we show that the trapezoidal magnetic synapse can be used as a metaplastic function for efficient online learning. Implementing a convolutional neural network for CIFAR-100 image recognition, we show that the straight magnetic synapse achieves near-ideal inference accuracy, due to the stability of its resistance levels. Abstract

Specialized accelerators have recently garnered attention as a method to reduce the power consumption of neural network inference. A promising category of accelerators utilizes nonvolatile memory arrays to both store weights and perform $\textit{in situ}$ analog computation inside the array. While prior work has explored the design space of analog accelerators to optimize performance and energy efficiency, there is seldom a rigorous evaluation of the accuracy of these accelerators. This work shows how architectural design decisions, particularly in mapping neural network parameters to analog memory cells, influence inference accuracy. When evaluated using ResNet50 on ImageNet, the resilience of the system to analog non-idealities - cell programming errors, analog-to-digital converter resolution, and array parasitic resistances - all improve when analog quantities in the hardware are made proportional to the weights in the network. Moreover, contrary to the assumptions of prior work, nearly equivalent resilience to cell imprecision can be achieved by fully storing weights as analog quantities, rather than spreading weight bits across multiple devices, often referred to as bit slicing. By exploiting proportionality, analog system designers have the freedom to match the precision of the hardware to the needs of the algorithm, rather than attempting to guarantee the same level of precision in the intermediate results as an equivalent digital accelerator. Abstract

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $\overline{\rm P}$ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton-nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the \textit{Phase One} setup. Abstract

There are pressing problems with traditional computing, especially for accomplishing data-intensive and real-time tasks, that motivate the development of in-memory computing devices to both store information and perform computation. Magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) memory elements can be used for computation by manipulating a domain wall (DW), a transition region between magnetic domains. But, these devices have suffered from challenges: spin transfer torque (STT) switching of a DW requires high current, and the multiple etch steps needed to create an MTJ pillar on top of a DW track has led to reduced tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR). These issues have limited experimental study of devices and circuits. Here, we study prototypes of three-terminal domain wall-magnetic tunnel junction (DW-MTJ) in-memory computing devices that can address data processing bottlenecks and resolve these challenges by using perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching, and an optimized lithography process to produce average device tunnel magnetoresistance TMR = 164%, resistance-area product RA = 31 {\Omega}-{\mu}m^2, close to the RA of the unpatterned film, and lower switching current density compared to using spin transfer torque. A two-device circuit shows bit propagation between devices. Device initialization variation in switching voltage is shown to be curtailed to 7% by controlling the DW initial position, which we show corresponds to 96% accuracy in a DW-MTJ full adder simulation. Abstract

Scaling laws of dust, HI gas and metal mass with stellar mass, specific star formation rate and metallicity are crucial to our understanding of the buildup of galaxies through their enrichment with metals and dust. In this work, we analyse how the dust and metal content varies with specific gas mass ($M_{\text{HI}}$/$M_{\star}$) across a diverse sample of 423 nearby galaxies. The observed trends are interpreted with a set of Dust and Element evolUtion modelS (DEUS) - incluidng stellar dust production, grain growth, and dust destruction - within a Bayesian framework to enable a rigorous search of the multi-dimensional parameter space. We find that these scaling laws for galaxies with $-1.0\lesssim \log M_{\text{HI}}$/$M_{\star}\lesssim0$ can be reproduced using closed-box models with high fractions (37-89$\%$) of supernova dust surviving a reverse shock, relatively low grain growth efficiencies ($\epsilon$=30-40), and long dus lifetimes (1-2\,Gyr). The models have present-day dust masses with similar contributions from stellar sources (50-80\,$\%$) and grain growth (20-50\,$\%$). Over the entire lifetime of these galaxies, the contribution from stardust ($>$90\,$\%$) outweighs the fraction of dust grown in the interstellar medium ($<$10$\%$). Our results provide an alternative for the chemical evolution models that require extremely low supernova dust production efficiencies and short grain growth timescales to reproduce local scaling laws, and could help solving the conundrum on whether or not grains can grow efficiently in the interstellar medium., Comment: 56 pages, 30 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Electromagnetic showers are reconstructed in a cylindrical scintillating fiber calorimeter inside the magnet and a lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification is achieved by measuring energy loss in the wire chambers and using the flight time of particles between the target and detectors outside the magnet. The signals from all detectors are recorded with flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions with a latency of 3.3 $\mu$s. The detector operates routinely at trigger rates of 40 kHz and data rates of 600 megabytes per second. Abstract

Non-volatile memory arrays can deploy pre-trained neural network models for edge inference. However, these systems are affected by device-level noise and retention issues. Here, we examine damage caused by these effects, introduce a mitigation strategy, and demonstrate its use in fabricated array of SONOS (Silicon-Oxide-Nitride-Oxide-Silicon) devices. On MNIST, fashion-MNIST, and CIFAR-10 tasks, our approach increases resilience to synaptic noise and drift. Abstract

We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for the reaction $\vec{\gamma} p\to K^+\Sigma^0$(1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2-8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable $t$, and a single value of $\Sigma$ was extracted for events produced in the $u$-channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for the reaction in this energy range. For the $t$-channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the $t$-range studied, $-t=(0.1-1.4)~$(GeV/$c$)$^{2}$, with an average value of $\Sigma = 1.00\pm 0.05$. This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the $K^{*}$(892) Regge trajectory. A value of $\Sigma = 0.41 \pm 0.09$ is obtained for the $u$-channel integrated up to $-u=2.0$~(GeV/$c$)$^{2}$.

Abstract

Machine learning implements backpropagation via abundant training samples. We demonstrate a multi-stage learning system realized by a promising non-volatile memory device, the domain-wall magnetic tunnel junction (DW-MTJ). The system consists of unsupervised (clustering) as well as supervised sub-systems, and generalizes quickly (with few samples). We demonstrate interactions between physical properties of this device and optimal implementation of neuroscience-inspired plasticity learning rules, and highlight performance on a suite of tasks. Our energy analysis confirms the value of the approach, as the learning budget stays below 20 $\mu J$ even for large tasks used typically in machine learning.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) has a tendency for lymphatic spread and locoregional recurrence, although there is little data examining the risk factors for patients with lymph node-positive extremity lesions. The purpose of the current study was to examine the outcomes and risk factors associated with nodal metastasis in extremity MCC. We retrospectively reviewed the medical record of 120 patients with extremity MCC evaluated at our institution between 1994 and 2021. The mean age of this cohort was 71 years; 33% of patients were female; and 98% were Caucasian. Seventy-eight (65%) patients presented with localized disease. Thirty-seven (31%) patients had stage III disease, and five (4%) patients had stage IV disease. Treatment of primary lesions consisted primarily of margin-negative excision and adjuvant radiotherapy. Nodal metastases were most treated with adjuvant radiation or completion lymph node dissection. Five-year disease-specific survival in our series was 88% for patients with localized disease, 89% for stage IIIa disease, 40% for stage IIIb disease and 42% for stage IV. Factors associated with worse survival included immunosuppression and macroscopic nodal disease. In conclusion, extremity MCC has a low rate of local recurrence when treated with margin-negative excision and adjuvant radiation. However, treatment of nodal metastases remains a challenge with high rates of recurrence and mortality, particularly for patients who are immunosuppressed or who have macroscopic nodal disease.

Abstract

Neuromorphic-style inference only works well if limited hardware resources are maximized properly, e.g. accuracy continues to scale with parameters and complexity in the face of potential disturbance. In this work, we use realistic crossbar simulations to highlight that compact implementations of deep neural networks are unexpectedly susceptible to collapse from multiple system disturbances. Our work proposes a middle path towards high performance and strong resilience utilizing the Mosaics framework, and specifically by re-using synaptic connections in a recurrent neural network implementation that possesses a natural form of noise-immunity.

Abstract

PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2x10^32 cm^2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5{\deg} to 22{\deg} and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA Disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment (HEP) before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. Abstract

We report on the measurement of the beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for the reactions $\vec{\gamma}p\rightarrow p\eta$ and $\vec{\gamma}p \rightarrow p\eta^{\prime}$ from the GlueX experiment, using an 8.2--8.8 GeV linearly polarized tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. These measurements are made as a function of momentum transfer $-t$, with significantly higher statistical precision than our earlier $\eta$ measurements, and are the first measurements of $\eta^{\prime}$ in this energy range. We compare the results to theoretical predictions based on $t$--channel quasi-particle exchange. We also compare the ratio of $\Sigma_{\eta}$ to $\Sigma_{\eta^{\prime}}$ to these models, as this ratio is predicted to be sensitive to the amount of $s\bar{s}$ exchange in the production. We find that photoproduction of both $\eta$ and $\eta^{\prime}$ is dominated by natural parity exchange with little dependence on $-t$., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We report on the measurement of the $\gamma p \rightarrow J/\psi p$ cross section from $E_\gamma = 11.8$ GeV down to the threshold at $8.2$ GeV using a tagged photon beam with the GlueX experiment. We find the total cross section falls toward the threshold less steeply than expected from two-gluon exchange models. The differential cross section $d\sigma /dt$ has an exponential slope of $1.67 \pm 0.39$ GeV$^{-2}$ at $10.7$ GeV average energy. The LHCb pentaquark candidates $P_c^+$ can be produced in the $s$-channel of this reaction. We see no evidence for them and set model-dependent upper limits on their branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(P_c^+ \rightarrow J/\psi p)$ and cross sections $\sigma(\gamma p \to P_c^+)\times\mathcal{B}(P_c^+ \to J/\psi p) $., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We assessed the psychometric properties using the modified critical appraisal tool (CAT). Finally, we systematically reviewed the results of the included studies.Results: A total of 15 studies were eventually included. The overall quality of each eligible study was low to moderate. The FLACC scale has been available in different versions and in different settings. Although eligible studies have demonstrated significant clinical benefit in assessing postoperative pain in pediatric patients aged 0 to 10 years from post-anesthetic care unit (PACU), pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and inpatient unit, and in assessing procedural pain in pediatric patients aged 0.5 to 7 years from emergency unit, immunization center and PICU, mostly without test-retest analysis.Conclusion: Although the absence of a gold standard of pain assessment, the currently available data support the usefulness of the FLACC from the perspective of criterion validity. Therefore, the FLACC scale can be considered for measuring observational pain in infants and children. Abstract

Using $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken at the CESR collider with the CLEO-c detector, measurements of two main $\Omega^-$ branching fractions have been made using the reaction $\psi(2S)\to\Omega^-\overline{\Omega}^+$, hyperon pair production at $\sqrt{s}=3.69$~GeV, the peak of the $\psi(2S)$ resonance. $\Omega^-$ decay channels are identified through momentum distributions of charged particles, and systematics of the $\Omega^-$ branching fractions have been studied. The result gives: $\mathcal{B}(\Omega^- \to \Lambda^0 K^-) = (68.9\pm9.5\pm4.3)\%$, and $ \mathcal{B}(\Omega^- \to \Xi^0 \pi^-) = (19.0\pm4.0\pm1.2)\%$., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRD

Abstract

Thermophotovoltaic power conversion utilizes thermal radiation from a local heat source to generate electricity in a photovoltaic cell. It was shown in recent years that the addition of a highly reflective rear mirror to a solar cell maximizes the extraction of luminescence. This, in turn, boosts the voltage, enabling the creation of record-breaking solar efficiency. Now we report that the rear mirror can be used to create thermophotovoltaic systems with unprecedented high thermophotovoltaic efficiency. This mirror reflects low-energy infrared photons back into the heat source, recovering their energy. Therefore, the rear mirror serves a dual function; boosting the voltage and reusing infrared thermal photons. This allows the possibility of a practical >50% efficient thermophotovoltaic system. Based on this reflective rear mirror concept, we report a thermophotovoltaic efficiency of 29.1 ± 0.4% at an emitter temperature of 1,207 °C.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Sacubitril/valsartan, an angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI), is an established treatment for heart failure (HF) with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction. It has not been rigorously compared with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors in children. PANORAMA-HF (Prospective Trial to Assess the Angiotensin Receptor Blocker Neprilysin Inhibitor LCZ696 Versus Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor for the Medical Treatment of Pediatric HF) is a randomized, double-blind trial that evaluated the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD), safety, and efficacy of sacubitril/valsartan versus enalapril in children 1 month to <18 years of age with HF attributable to systemic left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD). METHODS: Children with HF attributable to LVSD were randomized to sacubitril/valsartan versus enalapril to assess the efficacy and safety of sacubitril/valsartan at 52 weeks of follow-up. The primary end point of the study was to determine whether sacubitril/valsartan was superior to enalapril for the treatment of pediatric patients with HF attributable to systemic LVSD, assessed using a primary global rank end point consisting of ranking patients from worst to best on the basis of clinical events such as death, listing for urgent heart transplant, mechanical life support requirement, worsening HF, New York Heart Association (NYHA)/Ross class, Patient Global Impression of Severity (PGIS), and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory physical functioning domain. The change from baseline to 52 weeks in NT-proBNP (N-Terminal pro-B-Type natriuretic peptide) was an exploratory end point. RESULTS: A total of 375 children (mean age, 8.1±5.6 years; 52% female) were randomized to sacubitril/valsartan (n=187) or enalapril (n=188). 41. Tumor lysis syndrome following ifosfamide monotherapy in metastatic osteosarcoma: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract

Abstract Background Tumor lysis syndrome is an oncologic emergency that involves multiple metabolic abnormalities and clinical symptoms such as acute renal failure, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, and multiorgan failure, and may be fatal if not promptly recognized. Tumor lysis syndrome occurs most often in patients with hematologic malignancies, and relatively few cases have been described in patients with sarcoma. Case presentation A 64-year-old male of Asian heritage presented to his primary care physician with a right lower-extremity mass and was ultimately diagnosed with widely metastatic osteosarcoma. He was treated with one cycle of cisplatin and doxorubicin that was complicated by hypervolemia and hypoxic respiratory failure. Given concerns for volume overload, therapy was changed to single-agent, dose-reduced ifosfamide. After receiving one dose of ifosfamide 1 g/m2 (1.8 g total) intravenously over 1 hour, the patient developed renal failure, hyperuricemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, and lactic acidosis. The patient ultimately died from severe electrolyte abnormalities associated with tumor lysis syndrome. Conclusion This is the first instance of tumor lysis syndrome described in a patient with osteosarcoma undergoing ifosfamide monotherapy. Clinicians must be vigilant in identifying tumor lysis syndrome regardless of the malignancy type or chemotherapy regimen in order to prevent potentially fatal complications.

Therefore, the siRNA down-regulates the formation of selected mRNAs and their protein products. Givosiran is one such siRNA that uses this mechanism to treat acute hepatic porphyrias. Acute hepatic porphyrias are a group of rare, inherited metabolic disorders, characterized by acute potentially life-threatening attacks as well as chronic symptoms with a negative impact on quality of life. It has four types, each associated with distinct enzyme defects in the heme biosynthesis pathway in the liver. By targeting the expression of hepatic 5-aminolevulinic acid [ALA] synthase-1 [ALAS1], givosiran can down-regulate levels of toxic metabolites, leading to biochemical and clinical improvement. Givosiran selectively targets hepatocytes due to its linkage to N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNac) leading to its selective uptake via asialoglycoprotein receptors (ASGPR). We provide an up-to-date literature review regarding givosiran in the context of a clinical overview of the porphyrias, an overview of siRNAs for therapy of human disorders, the design and development of givosiran, key clinical trial results of givosiran for prevention of acute porphyric attacks, emerging concerns regarding chronic use of givosiran, and the overall management of acute hepatic porphyrias. Using $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken at the CESR collider with the CLEO-c detector, measurements of hyperon pair production cross sections and elastic and transition electromagnetic form factors have been made at the charmonium resonances: $\psi(2S)$, $\sqrt{s}=3.69$ GeV, $|Q^2|=13.6$ GeV$^2$, $\mathcal{L}=48$~pb$^{-1}$; $\psi(3770)$, $\sqrt{s}=3.77$ GeV, $|Q^2|=14.2$ GeV$^2$, $\mathcal{L}=805$~pb$^{-1}$; and $\psi(4170)$, $\sqrt{s}=4.17$ GeV, $|Q^2|=17.4$ GeV$^2$, $\mathcal{L}=586$~pb$^{-1}$. %High efficiency particle identification has resulted in good statistical precision in the results. Results with good statistical precision are obtained with high efficiency particle identification. Abstract

In this work, a new Mg-2Zn-0.8Sr-0.2Ca alloy with low content of alloying elements was subjected to extrusion at relatively low-temperatures (240 and 200°C) and slow-speed (1.0 mm/s and 0.1 mm/s). The average size and volume fraction of recrystallized grains in the extruded Mg-2Zn-0.8Sr-0.2Ca alloy gradually decreased with the reduction in extrusion rate or extrusion temperature. Some broken second phases including Ca2Mg6Zn3 and Mg17Sr2 appeared in the extruded Mg-2Zn- 0.8Sr-0.2Ca alloy along with some precipitated nano-sized MgZn2 phases. The volume fraction of MgZn2 phases gradually in the alloy increased as extrusion rate or temperature decreased. High performance with yield strength of 393.1 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 418.4 MPa and the elongation of 5.7% was obtained in the Mg-2Zn-0.8Sr-0.2Ca alloy extruded at 200°C & 0.1 mm/s. The main strengthening mechanisms could be attributed to grain-boundary strengthening, dislocation strengthening, precipitation strengthening, which were related to the change in grain size, second phases and basal texture intensity for the extruded Mg-2Zn-0.8Sr-0.2Ca alloy.

Abstract

We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for the reactions $\vec{\gamma}p\to p\pi^0$ and $\vec{\gamma}p\to p\eta $ from the GlueX experiment using a 9 GeV linearly-polarized, tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Jefferson Lab's Hall D. The asymmetries, measured as a function of the proton momentum transfer, possess greater precision than previous $\pi^0$ measurements and are the first $\eta$ measurements in this energy regime. The results are compared with theoretical predictions based on $t$-channel, quasi-particle exchange and constrain the axial-vector component of the neutral meson production mechanism in these models., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, Published in Physical Review C: Rapid Communication
