Rock joints have obvious acoustic emission (AE) Kaiser effect and Felicity effect under multilevel cyclic shear conditions. The TFD-20H/50J rock shear apparatus was used to carry out cyclic loading and unloading joint shear tests, and the acoustic emission parameters and frequency spectrum characteristics of the whole shearing process were analyzed. The results show that, under the cyclic loading, the shear stress-displacement curve forms several cyclic hysteresis loops, and the number of loops increases with the increase of normal stress. With the cycles increase, the shear damage gradually increases, and the Felicity ratio gradually decreases. The Felicity ratio at the final shear failure moment is about 0.94~0.99. The ratio of the RA value (rise time/amplitude) and the average frequency value (RA-AF) is used to classify the cracking mode of the joint sample. There are two AE crack signal types (tensile type and shear type) during shear damage. The peak frequency is displayed as high, medium, and low three frequency bands, which are distributed in the range of 0~35 kHz, 35~122 kHz, and 122~300 kHz, respectively. Both low-frequency and high-frequency signals account for less than 10%, and medium-frequency signals account for more than 90%. The research of the AE monitoring signals of multilevel shear behaviors can help understand the shear-friction mechanisms of rock joints.

The prefabricated urban utility tunnels (UUTs) have many advantages such as short construction period, low cost, high quality, and small land occupation. However, there is still a lack of in-depth analysis of the mechanical performance of the prefabricated urban utility tunnel (UUT) structure with bolted connections under different working conditions. In this paper, the force performance of a prefabricated UUT in Tongzhou District, Beijing, was studied under different working conditions using two methods: field monitoring and numerical simulation. The multichannel strain monitor was used for monitoring, and the internal wall concrete and bolt strain change data under the two conditions of installation and backfill were obtained. Combined with the construction process of the UUTs, a three-dimensional numerical model was established by COMSOL, where the build-in bolt assembly was used to simulate the longitudinal connection of the tunnel. The simulation results were compared with the measured data to verify the rationality of the computational model. The simulation results showed that the concrete and bolts on the inner wall of the tunnel work well under the two conditions of installation and backfilling; The deformation of the top plate of the prefabricated tunnel was approximately parabolic, with the largest vertical displacement (0.37 mm) in the middle and the most sensitive to the vertical load in the central part of the roof. The central portion of the side wall had the largest displacement (0.17 mm) in the inner concave. The tensile stress of bolt 3 increased the most (30.75 MPa) but was still much smaller than the yield strength of the bolt. The concrete and bolts of the UUT were found to work well through force analysis under operating conditions. In conclusion, analysis of structural forces and deformation failure modes will help design engineers understand the basic mechanisms and select the appropriate UUT structure.

In the process of development and construction of open-pit mine slope in the high altitude and cold area, freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles have an important impact on rock engineering structure. F-T cycles lead to the decrease in physical and mechanical properties of rock, which is closely related to the stability of open-pit slope. In this paper, the influence of F-T cycles on geomechanical and acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of tuff specimens under different stress paths was studied by using F-T cycle treatment, in situ AE monitoring, and uniaxial loading test. The results indicated that under the same stress path, the cumulative AE count/energy of rock samples subjected to F-T cycles was less than that of rock samples not subjected to F-T cycles. The peak frequency distribution of AE signal during the loading process of rock specimen presented the phenomenon of frequency bands. The width of the low-frequency band of the rock samples subjected to F-T cycles was larger than that of the rock samples under the natural state. The frequency and width of the high-frequency band of the rock samples subjected to F-T cycles were larger than those of the rock samples under the natural state. The rock samples subjected to F-T cycles had higher plastic strain than those without F-T cycles. According to the uniaxial compression test results of F-T rock samples under different stress paths, the peak stress and peak strain have little change, but the AE characteristics were obviously different.

Cemented waste rock backfill (CWRB), which is a mixture of tailings, waste rock, cement, and water, is subjected to the combination actions in underground mining operations. While the strength requirement of CWRB has been widely studied, the mesoscopic damage evolution mechanisms of waste block proportion (WBP) on its geomechanical characteristics are still not well understood. In the present paper, the crack damage evolution of CWRB samples were characterized using real-time X-ray CT under uniaxial compression. The effects of waste block on the stress strain responses, stress dilatancy behaviors, meso-structure changes, and the cracking behaviors were investigated. The results show that strength of CWBR is influenced by waste block proportion, and strength increases are due to geomechanical effects related to propagation of tortuous failure surfaces. Besides, for sample with high WBP, interlocking among the waste blocks also improves the overall stiffness and strength of CWRB compared with tailing paste sample. Volumetric dilatancy caused by the damage and cracking behavior has a close link with the meso-structural changes, which are controlled by the interactions between the waste rock and cemented tailing paste. The crack damage behavior is quite inhomogeneous and strongly influenced by the waste block size, shape, and distribution. Our study demonstrates that it is feasible to reveal the physical mesoscopic mechanism of crack damage evolution for CWRB by using X-ray CT, and the meso-damage cracking behaviors should be deeply studied to ensure stability of pillar during mining activities.

Underground excavation usually results in the decrease of horizontal stress in the front of the working face, which may trigger the occurrence of rock bust hazards. Examining rock failure under confining pressure unloading conditions is necessary to reveal the fracture mechanism of rock mass subjected to stress disturbance. Although many investigations have studied the rock mechanical behaviors during unloading, the time-lagged triaxial unloading paths on the rock fracturing mechanisms are still poorly understood. Triaxial unloading experiments and the post-test CT scanning technique were conducted on fine-grained marble samples under different unloading conditions. The stress–strain behaviors, energy evolution characteristics, and the fracture pattern of samples were analyzed. The results indicate that obvious features at various stages can be identified from the deformation history curve of the elastic strain energy (Ue), total strain energy (U), and dissipated energy (Ud). U, Ue, and Ud almost all increase with sample deformation at the time duration stage, and the elastic energy and dissipation energy curves slightly decrease and increase again. After the unloading point, the dissipation energy sharply increases and the incremental rate of elastic energy becomes lower. The elastic strain energy increases with the increasing unloading rate for samples at the confining pressure unloading point and failure point, and it is influenced by the time-lag effect of confining pressure. The crack pattern in the CT images depends on the triaxial unloading rate and time effect, which is in good agreement with the energy dissipation and release analysis. The unloading strategy has an effect on the energy conversion during triaxial unloading tests; in other words, energy dissipation and release are dependent on the unloading rate and time.

This work presents an experimental study that focused on the meso-damage evolution of cemented waste rock-tailing backfill (CWRTB) under triaxial compression using the in situ X-ray computed tomography (CT) technique. Although numerous investigations have studied the magnitude of the strength of CWRTB material, the mesoscopic damage evolution mechanisms under triaxial deformation are still poorly understood. Artificial CWRTB samples with a waste rock proportion of 30% were prepared by mixing tailings, waste rock, cement, and water. A specific self-developed loading device was used to match the CT machine to real-time CT scanning for the CWRTB sample. A series of 2D CT images were obtained by performing CT imaging at five key points throughout the test and from three positions in the sample. The CT values, for the purpose of meso-damage evolution in CWRTB, were identified. The results showed that the axial stress&ndash, strain curve presented strain hardening characteristics. The CT data revealed the inhomogeneous damage field inside the CWRTB sample and the most severely damaged regions that were usually located at the waste block-tailings paste interfaces. The changes in CT values for the different regions of interest (ROI) revealed the complicated interactions between the waste blocks and the tailings paste matrix. The meso-structural changes, formation of the localized bands, and the associated stress dilatancy phenomenon were strongly influenced by the interactions between the waste blocks and tailing paste.

Seepage failure in the form of piping can strongly influence the stability of block-in-matrix-soils (bimsoils), as well as weaken and affect the performance of bimsoil structures. The multiple-factor evaluation and optimization play a crucial role in controlling the seepage failure in bimsoil. The aim of this study is to improve the ability to control the piping seepage failure in bimsoil. In this work, the response surface method (RSM) was employed to evaluate and optimize the multiple piping parameters to maximize the critical hydraulic gradient (CHG), in combination with experimental modeling based on a self-developed servo-controlled flow-erosion-stress coupled testing system. All of the studied specimens with rock block percentage (RBP) of 30%, 50%, and 70% were produced as a cylindrical shape (50 mm diameter and 100 mm height) by compaction tests. Four uncertain parameters, such as RBP, soil matrix density, confining pressure, and block morphology were used to fit an optimal response of the CHG. The sensitivity analysis reveals the influential order of the studied factors to CHG. It is found that RBP is the most sensitive factor, the CHG decreases with the increase of RBP, and CHG increases with the increase of confining pressure, soil matrix density, and block angularity.

Nonlinear forced vibration is analyzed for thin rectangular plate with four free edges on nonlinear elastic foundation. Based on Hamilton variation principle, equations of nonlinear vibration motion for thin rectangular plate under harmonic loads on nonlinear elastic foundation are established. In the case of four free edges, viable expressions of trial functions for this specification are proposed, satisfying all boundary conditions. Then, equations are transformed to a system of nonlinear algebraic equations by using Galerkin method and are solved by using harmonic balance method. In the analysis of numerical computations, the effect on the amplitude-frequency characteristic curve due to change of the structural parameters of plate, parameters of foundation and parameters of excitation force are discussed.

Chord as a classical structured P2P network allows efficient location of the node that stores a desired content. In original Chord model, the participating nodes are equivalent, but it is not true in reality; besides, the semantic property of the content in the model is not taken into account. To advance the performance of Chord, we proposed an improved Chord model based on Topic-Cluster and Hierarchic Layer (HTC-Chord). A clustering policy is exploited to cluster the nodes sharing similar interest together, while the nodes are organized into different hierarchic layers according to their capabilities. Compared with the original Chord, the HTC-Chord enhances the query efficiency and decrease the impact of dynamic environment.
