Highlights The homogeneous hybridization of organic–inorganic-metal elements in 3D aerogel was achieved by an expeditious method. The aerogel tightly integrates excellent thermal insulation (49.6 mW m−1 K−1), ablative resistance, mechanical strength, and superhydrophobic properties. The ablated carbon aerogel combines notable electromagnetic interference shielding properties (31.6 dB) and load-carrying properties (272.8 kN·m kg−1).

PurposeExergames are an innovative method that can promote neuroplasticity and improve the cognitive abilities of the elderly. This study aimed to compare the effects of single-task and multi-task exergames on the cognitive ability of the elderly with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).MethodsComputerized literature search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, Elsevier, ProQuest, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang and VIP database to identify relevant articles from the establishment of the database from inception to April 1, 2024. The inclusion criteria were: (i) participants aged 60 or older diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, regardless of gender; (ii) use of randomized controlled trials (RCTs); (iii) interventions involving exergames with physical activity or as the primary variable; and (iv) outcome measures using standardized neuropsychological instruments to assess cognitive function, including statistical data on sample size, mean, and standard deviation. Finally, the included study comprised a total of 526 participants. Mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to synthesize the effect size in the data.Results11 studies were included. Due to the differences in the intervention methods, subgroup analysis was performed on the included research. Compared with the control group assessed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale, the single-task intervention improved the cognitive ability of the elderly with MCI (MD 3.40, 95% CI 2.43–4.37), the Mini-Mental State Examination Scale (MD 2.38, 95% CI −2.03 to 2.72), the Trail Making Test (MD −3.89, 95% CI −6.45 to −1.33), and the Digit Span Forward test (MD 1.16, 95% CI 0.73–1.60).ConclusionThis meta-analysis supports that exergames could be an effective cognitive rehabilitation method for MCI patients. Our study recommends that patients implement a customized exergames program and adhere to it for a long time. It is necessary to pay attention to the exercise guidelines and provide evidence from clinicians.Strengths and limitations of this study(1) This meta-analysis supports that exergames could be an effective cognitive rehabilitation method for MCI patients. BackgroundAs a therapeutic tool, kinesiology taping (KT) has become increasingly popular for musculoskeletal injuries utilized by physiotherapists. KT has been found to have effects on facilitating muscle strength by generating a concentric pull on the fascia. However, little is known about KT in the improvement of dynamic and static balance. This study aims to explore whether KT on the quadriceps muscle has any immediate effects on static and dynamic balance.MethodologyTwenty-seven healthy individuals (13 males and 14 females, aged 22 to 29) were recruited in a crossover study with two conditions: KT and no taping. KT was applied to the quadriceps muscle for the taping group, with the control receiving no taping. Pre- and post-test measurements were taken to give an indication of the effect of the tape on balance performance. Center of Pressure Excursion (COPE) and Time to Stabilization (TTS) when landing from a hop test and Y Balance test combined score (YBTCS) were used to assess a stabilizing balance activity and a dynamic balance. The pre- and post-intervention were collected, with differences explored using repeated measures ANOVA with time and condition (tape) factor analysis.ResultsWe found a significant improvement (p ≤ 0.05) with a moderate to large effect size in YBTCS between KT and no taping, indicating enhanced balance performance in the KT group. However, no significant difference (p ≥ 0.05) with small to moderate effect size was found in COPE or TTS between the two conditions during landing tests, suggesting similar balance capabilities in these specific measures.ConclusionThe use of KT shows no significant immediate effect on static balance in healthy individuals when applied to the quadriceps muscles; however, it demonstrates a positive immediate effect on dynamic balance.

Introducing Neutral Polymeric bonding agents (NPBA) into the Nitrate Ester Plasticized Polyether (NEPE) propellant could improve the adhesion between filler/matrix interface, thereby contributing to the development of new generations of the NEPE propellant with better mechanical properties. Therefore, understanding the effects of NPBA on the deformation and damage evolution of the NEPE propellant is fundamental to material design and applications. This paper studies the uniaxial tensile and stress relaxation responses of the NEPE propellant with different amounts of NPBA. The damage evolution in terms of interface debonding is further investigated using a cohesive-zone model (CZM). Experimental results show that the initial modulus and strength of the NEPE propellant increase with the increasing amount of NPBA while the elongation decreases. Meanwhile, the relaxation rate slows down and a higher long-term equilibrium modulus is reached. Experimental and numerical analyses indicate that interface debonding and crack propagation along filler–matrix interface are the dominant damage mechanism for the samples with a low amount of NPBA, while damage localization and crack advancement through the matrix are predominant for the ones with a high amount of NPBA. Finally, crosslinking density tests and simulation results also show that the effect of the bonding agent is interfacial rather than due to the overall crosslinking density change of the binder.

Investigating the ignition response of nitrate ester plasticized polyether (NEPE) propellant under dynamic extrusion loading is of great significant at least for two cases. Firstly, it helps to understand the mechanism and conditions of unwanted ignition inside charged propellant under accident stimulus. Secondly, evaluates the risk of a shell crevice in a solid rocket motor (SRM) under a falling or overturning scene. In the present study, an innovative visual crevice extrusion experiment is designed using a drop-weight apparatus. The dynamic responses of NEPE propellant during extrusion loading, including compaction and compression, rapid shear flow into the crevice, stress concentration, and ignition reaction, have been firstly observed using a high-performance high-speed camera. The ignition reaction is observed in the triangular region of the NEPE propellant sample above the crevice when the drop weight velocity was 1.90 m/s. Based on the user material subroutine interface UMAT provided by finite element software LS-DYNA, a viscoelastic-plastic model and dual ignition criterion related to plastic shear dissipation are developed and applied to the local ignition response analysis under crevice extrusion conditions. The stress concentration occurs in the crevice location of the propellant sample, the shear stress is relatively large, the effective plastic work is relatively large, and the ignition reaction is easy to occur. When the sample thickness decreases from 5 mm to 2.5 mm, the shear stress increases from 22.3 MPa to 28.6 MPa, the critical value of effective plastic work required for ignition is shortened from 1280 μs to 730 μs, and the triangular area is easily triggering an ignition reaction. The propellant sample with a small thickness is more likely to stress concentration, resulting in large shear stress and effective work, triggering an ignition reaction.

Part-set cuing facilitation and impairment effects are rarely found in spatial memory, which is a challenge to the theories of part-set cuing effects based on lexical stimulus. This study aims to investigate whether there part-set cuing facilitation and impairment effects are present in spatial memory by constructing two types of memory scenes with high and low degrees of interitem associations, achieved by manipulating the presentation of miniatures. This study examined the effects of different part-set cues on free recall, recognition, and reconstruction tasks. The results of two experiments revealed that matrix cues impaired the performance of three recall tasks in memory scenes with a high degree of interitem associations, and scene cues facilitated the reconstruction performance (Experiment 1). Conversely, in memory scenes with a low degree of interitem associations, the impairment effect of matrix cues was not observed in the three recall tasks, but scene cues still facilitated the reconstruction performance (Experiment 2). These findings supported the retrieval strategy disruption hypothesis, the two-mechanism and the multi-mechanism accounts, demonstrating the significance of interitem associations in spatial memory. Furthermore, the results provided direct evidence for the importance of the encoding-retrieval strategy matching principle in spatial memory tasks.

BackgroundA growing body of studies have examined the effect of exercise in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), while findings of available studies were conflicting. This meta-analysis aimed to explore the effects of exercise on balance, walking ability, walking endurance, fatigue, and quality of life in people with MS.MethodsWe searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases, through March 1, 2024. Inclusion criteria were: (1) RCTs; (2) included an intervention and control group; (3) had people with MS as study subjects; (4) had balance, walking ability, walking endurance, fatigue, or quality of life as the outcome measures. Exclusion criteria were: (1) non-English publications; (2) animal model publications; (3) review articles; and (4) conference articles. A meta-analysis was conducted to calculate weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Cochrane risk assessment tool and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale were used to evaluate the methodological quality of the included studies.ResultsForty studies with a total of 56 exercise groups (n = 1,300) and 40 control groups (n = 827) were eligible for meta-analysis. Exercise significantly improved BBS (WMD, 3.77; 95% CI, 3.01 to 4.53, P < 0.00001), TUG (WMD, −1.33; 95% CI, −1.57 to −1.08, P < 0.00001), MSWS-12 (WMD, −2.57; 95% CI, −3.99 to −1.15, P = 0.0004), 6MWT (WMD, 25.56; 95% CI, 16.34 to 34.79, P < 0.00001), fatigue (WMD, −4.34; 95% CI, −5.83 to −2.84, P < 0.00001), and MSQOL-54 in people with MS (WMD, 11.80; 95% CI, 5.70 to 17.90, P = 0.0002) in people with MS. Subgroup analyses showed that aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, and multicomponent training were all effective in improving fatigue in people with MS, with resistance exercise being the most effective intervention type. In addition, a younger age was associated with a larger improvement in fatigue. Furthermore, aerobic exercise and multicomponent training were all effective in improving quality of life in people with MS, with aerobic exercise being the most effective intervention type.ConclusionExercise had beneficial effects in improving balance, walking ability, walking endurance, fatigue, and quality of life in people with MS. Resistance exercise and aerobic exercise are the most effective interventions for improving fatigue and quality of life in people with MS, respectively. IntroductionAdverse life events constitute primary risk factors for major depressive disorder (MDD), influencing brain function and structure. Adolescents, with their brains undergoing continuous development, are particularly susceptible to enduring impacts of adverse events.MethodsWe investigated differences and correlations among childhood trauma, negative life events, and alterations of brain function in adolescents with first-episode MDD. The study included 23 patients with MDD and 19 healthy controls, aged 10–19 years. All participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and were assessed using the beck depression inventory, childhood trauma questionnaire, and adolescent self-rating life events checklist.ResultsCompared with healthy controls, participants with first-episode MDD were more likely to have experienced emotional abuse, physical neglect, interpersonal relationship problems, and learning stress (all p’ < 0.05). These adverse life events were significantly correlated with alterations in brain functions (all p < 0.05).DiscussionThis study contributes novel evidence on the underlying process between adverse life events, brain function, and depression, emphasizing the significant neurophysiological impact of environmental factors.

IntroductionAn increasing number of studies have investigated the effect of exercise on flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), while the findings were controversial. The primary aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the effect of exercise on FMD in T2DM patients, and the secondary aim was to investigate the optimal type, frequency, session duration, and weekly time of exercise for T2DM patients.MethodsSearches were conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase and EBSCO databases. The Cochrane risk of bias tool (RoB2) in randomized trial and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale were used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies.ResultsFrom the 3636 search records initially retrieved, 13 studies met the inclusion criteria. Our meta-analysis revealed that exercise had a significant effect on improving FMD in T2DM patients [WMD, 2.18 (95% CI, 1.78-2.58), p < 0.00001, I2 = 38%], with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) being the most effective intervention type [HIIT, 2.62 (1.42-3.82); p < 0.0001; aerobic exercise, 2.20 (1.29-3.11), p < 0.00001; resistance exercise, 1.91 (0.01-3.82), p = 0.05; multicomponent training, 1.49 (0.15-2.83), p = 0.03]. In addition, a higher frequency [> 3 times, 3.06 (1.94-4.19), p < 0.00001; ≤ 3 times, 2.02 (1.59-2.45), p < 0.00001], a shorter session duration [< 60 min, 3.39 (2.07-4.71), p < 0.00001; ≥ 60 min, 1.86 (1.32-2.40), p < 0.00001], and a shorter weekly time [≤ 180 min, 2.40 (1.63-3.17), p < 0.00001; > 180 min, 2.11 (0.82-3.40), p = 0.001] were associated with larger improvements in FMD.ConclusionThis meta-analysis provides clinicians with evidence to recommended that T2DM patients participate in exercise, especially HIIT, more than 3 times per week for less than 60 min, with a target of 180 min per week being reached by increasing the frequency of exercise.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero, identifier CRD42023466575.

The study of high-energy and low-vulnerability propellants is important for the power performance and safety of solid propellant rocket motors. The modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) tests are performed on two kinds of propellant with different crosslinking density to study the dynamic mechanical responses and damage-ignition mechanism. SHPB apparatus is equipped with a high-performance infrared camera and high-speed camera to capture the deformation, damage-ignition feature and temperature evolution images in the impact process. The results suggested that the mechanical responses and damage-ignition mechanism of the propellants were affected by the strain rates and crosslinking density. The damage-ignition degree is more intense and the reaction occurs earlier with the increase of strain rates. For propellant 1 with higher crosslinking density, the critical ignition strain rate is 4500 s−1. Two kinds of propellants show different ignition mechanism, i.e. crack generation, propagation and final fracture for propellant 1 while viscous shear flow for propellant 2. Meanwhile, the SEM images also reveal the difference of damage-ignition mechanism of the two kinds of propellants. Finally, the ignition mechanism under different strain rates and critical ignition strain rate of propellants are further explained by the theoretical calculation of temperature variations.

Summary: To compare the dynamic stability of lower extremities between Copers and individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) using clinician-oriented assessments (Y-balance test, YBT) and laboratory-oriented assessments (time to stabilization, TTS). 90 participants (Copers, 45; CAIs, 45) were recruited and measured by YBT and TTS to evaluate dynamic stability. The difference of dynamic stability between Copers and CAIs was examined using a two-factor MANOVA. Only for females in anterior direction, YBT scores for the AS side of Copers were significantly higher than that of CAIs. For males, the TTS of CAIs was significantly shorter than that of Copers in the anterior, lateral, and medial direction separately. For females, the TTS of CAIs is also significantly shorter than that of Copers in the anterior, lateral, and medial direction separately. There are opposite results when evaluating the dynamic stability difference between Copers and CAIs using YBT and TTS.

Summary: This study examines the spatial-temporal evolution of overweight and obesity among Chinese adolescents aged 14–17. Data from five national surveys conducted between 2016 and 2020 were analyzed to determine distribution patterns and trends. Results showed that overweight and obesity exhibit spatial clustering, with greater severity in the north and less severity in the south. The issue has spread from the northeast to the southwest of Mainland China. Using a local autocorrelation model, the regions were divided into a northern disease cold spot area (Inner Mongolia) and a southern disease hot spot area (Guangxi). Over the past five years, overweight rates among Chinese adolescents have not been effectively curbed, but obesity has shown some success in control and reversal until 2019. Future efforts should focus on the spatial-temporal pattern of disease spread, targeting hotspot areas and abnormal values for regional synergy and precise prevention and control.

Induction welding is considered to be one of the most promising welding technologies for carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) composites. However, the uncertainty of heat generation mechanisms presents a challenge to regulating the temperature field uniformity. In this paper, a quantitative calculation method for the induction heating efficiency of various mechanisms was proposed for cross-ply CFRTP laminates. Combining electrical and thermal properties, the cross-ply CF/PEEK and CF/PPS induction heating experiments were designed to explore the quantity ratio of various heat generation mechanisms. The results show that the heat production at the junction is about 106-107 times that of fiber heating. The dielectric loss is dominant mechanism at the junction, and the proportions of heat generated by dielectric loss in CF/PEEK and CF/PPS laminates were 0.6688 and 0.8255, respectively. Furthermore, the temperature prediction model with various stacking sequences was established, showing a good agreement with the experimental temperatures.

High-performance thermoplastic composites have been developed as significant structural materials for cutting-edge equipment in the aerospace and defence fields. However, the internal mechanism of processing parameters on mechanical properties in the manufacturing process of thermoplastic composite structures is still a serious challenge. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process/crystallization/property relationships for continuous carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) composites. The composite laminates are fabricated according to orthogonal experiments via the thermoforming method. The mechanical performance is investigated in terms of crystallization properties and fracture morphology characterizations. Experimental results show that the mechanical performance and crystallization properties of thermoplastic composites are significantly affected by the coupling of processing parameters. The increased molding temperature, pressure, and holding time improve the degree of fiber/matrix infiltration and affect the crystallinity and crystalline morphology of the matrix, which further influences the mechanical properties of the composites. This is reflected in the test results that crystallinity has an approximately linear effect on mode-I interlaminar fracture toughness and transverse flexural modulus. As well as the higher molding temperature can destroy the pre-existent crystals to improve the toughness of the matrix, and the well-defined crystalline structures can be observed when fabricated at higher temperatures and longer periods of holding time.

Summary: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of 6 weeks of 40-, 60-, or 80-cm drop jump (DJ) training on lower limb explosive and change of direction (CoD) performance in collegiate Sanda athletes. Repeated-measure ANOVA revealed that there was a significant group × time interaction for standing long jump test (p = 0.006), counter movement jump test (p = 0.026), Illinois agility test (p = 0.003), square test (p = 0.018), Nebraska test (p = 0.027), t test (p = 0.032), and hexagon test (p = 0.012) due to the best performance observed at post-test compared with pre-test for DJ60 (effect size = 0.89–2.89), and the improvement was higher than that of the other groups. These findings suggest that 6 weeks of DJ training could improve the lower limb explosive and CoD performance in collegiate Sanda athletes and that 60 cm may be the optimal drop height.

Abstract Organic photodiodes (OPDs) have shown great promise for potential applications in optical imaging, sensing, and communication due to their wide-range tunable photoelectrical properties, low-temperature facile processes, and excellent mechanical flexibility. Extensive research work has been carried out on exploring materials, device structures, physical mechanisms, and processing approaches to improve the performance of OPDs to the level of their inorganic counterparts. In addition, various system prototypes have been built based on the exhibited and attractive features of OPDs. It is vital to link the device optimal design and engineering to the system requirements and examine the existing deficiencies of OPDs towards practical applications, so this review starts from discussions on the required key performance metrics for different envisioned applications. Then the fundamentals of the OPD device structures and operation mechanisms are briefly introduced, and the latest development of OPDs for improving the key performance merits is reviewed. Finally, the trials of OPDs for various applications including wearable medical diagnostics, optical imagers, spectrometers, and light communications are reviewed, and both the promises and challenges are revealed. In the context of global warming, the frequent occurrence of drought has become one of the main reasons affecting the loss of gross primary productivity (GPP) of terrestrial ecosystems. Under the influence of human activities, the vegetation greening trend of the Loess Plateau increased significantly. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the response of GPP to drought in the Loess Plateau under the greening trend. Here, we comprehensively assessed the ability of vegetation indices (VIs) and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) to capture GPP changes at different seasonal scales and during drought. Specifically, we utilized three vegetation indices: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), near-infrared reflectance of vegetation (NIRV), and kernel NDVI index (kNDVI), and determined the drought period of the Loess Plateau in 2001 based on the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and the standardized soil moisture index (SSMI). Moreover, the anomalies of VIs and SIF during the drought period and the relationship with GPP anomalies were compared. The results showed that both SIF and VIs were able to capture changes during the drought period as well as in normal years. Overall, SIF captured drought changes better due to water and heat stress as well as GPP changes compared to VIs. Across different time scales, SIF showed the strongest relationship with GPP (meanR2 = 0.85), followed by NIRV (meanR2 = 0.84), NDVI (meanR2 = 0.76), and kNDVI (meanR2 = 0.74), suggesting that SIF is more sensitive to physiological changes in vegetation. Notably, kNDVI performed best in sparse vegetation (meanR2 = 0.85). In capture during drought, NIRV and kNDVI performed better in less productive land classes; SIF showed superior capture as land use class productivity increased. In addition, GPP anomalies correlated better with kNDVI anomalies (meanR2 = 0.50) than with other index anomalies. In the future, efforts to integrate the respective strengths of SIF, NIRV, and kNDVI will improve our understanding of GPP changes.

IntroductionWeb-implemented exercise intervention is the latest and innovative method to improve people's mental health. Currently, many studies have proven that web-implemented interventions are effective to improve depression and anxiety in adults. However, the influence of different web-implemented exercise interventions on depression and anxiety in patients with neurological disorders is still unclear.ObjectiveThe study aims to systematically summarize the type and content of web-implemented exercise interventions and quantify the effect of different web-implemented exercise interventions on depression and anxiety in patients with neurological disorders.MethodsFour literature databases (PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and WanFang data) were searched. The literature search considered studies published in English or Chinese before October 13, 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that participants accepted web-implemented interventions were included. Two authors independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias for included studies. Standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% CI were used to integrate the effect size.Results16 RCTs (a total of 963 participants) were included. The results showed that web-implemented exercise intervention had a significant effect on depression (SMD = −0.80; 95% CI, −1.09 to −0.52; I2 = 75%; P < 0.00001) and anxiety (SMD = −0.80; 95% CI, −1.23 to −0.36; I2 = 75%; P = 0.0003) in patients with a neurological disorder. The subgroup analysis showed that the effectiveness of the web-implemented exercise intervention was influenced by several factors, such as web-implemented exercise intervention type, component, and intervention duration.ConclusionWeb-implemented exercise intervention has a relieving effect on depression and anxiety symptoms in patients with neurological disorders. IntroductionNon-aureus Staphylococcus (NAS) species are currently the most commonly identified microbial agents causing sub-clinical infections of the udder and are also deemed as opportunistic pathogens of clinical mastitis in dairy cattle. More than 10 NAS species have been identified and studied but little is known about S. haemolyticus in accordance with dairy mastitis. The present study focused on the molecular epidemiology and genotypic characterization of S. haemolyticus isolated from dairy cattle milk in Northwest, China.MethodsIn this study, a total of 356 milk samples were collected from large dairy farms in three provinces in Northwest, China. The bacterial isolation and presumptive identification were done by microbiological and biochemical methods following the molecular confirmation by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) was done by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion assay and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) were identified by PCR. The phylogenetic grouping and sequence typing was done by Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) and Multi-Locus Sequence Typing (MLST) respectively.ResultsIn total, 39/356 (11.0%) were identified as positive for S. haemolyticus. The overall prevalence of other Staphylococcus species was noted to be 39.6% (141/356), while the species distribution was as follows: S. aureus 14.9%, S. sciuri 10.4%, S. saprophyticus 7.6%, S. chromogenes 4.2%, S. simulans 1.4%, and S. epidermidis 1.1%. The antimicrobial susceptibility of 39 S. haemolyticus strains exhibited higher resistance to erythromycin (92.3%) followed by trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (51.3%), ciprofloxacin (43.6%), florfenicol (30.8%), cefoxitin (28.2%), and gentamicin (23.1%). All of the S. haemolyticus strains were susceptible to tetracycline, vancomycin, and linezolid. The overall percentage of multi-drug resistant (MDR) S. haemolyticus strains was noted to be 46.15% (18/39). Among ARGs, mphC was identified as predominant (82.05%), followed by ermB (33.33%), floR (30.77%), gyrA (30.77%), sul1 (28.21%), ermA (23.08%), aadD (12.82%), grlA (12.82%), aacA-aphD (10.26%), sul2 (10.26%), dfrA (7.69%), and dfrG (5.13%). The PFGE categorized 39 S. haemolyticus strains into A-H phylogenetic groups while the MLST categorized strains into eight STs with ST8 being the most predominant while other STs identified were ST3, ST11, ST22, ST32, ST19, ST16, and ST7.ConclusionThese findings provided new insights into our understanding of the epidemiology and genetic characteristics of S. haemolyticus in dairy farms to inform interventions limiting the spread of AMR in dairy production.

The automated fiber placement (AFP) process faces a crucial challenge: the emergence of out-of-plane buckling in thermoplastic prepreg tows during steering, significantly impeding the quality of composite layup. In response, this study introduces a novel approach: the development of equations for wrinkle-free fiber placement within composite pressure vessels. The investigation encompasses a detailed analysis of prepreg trajectories in relation to shell geometry, accompanied by an in-depth understanding of the underlying causes of wrinkling on dome surfaces. Moreover, a comprehensive model for shell coverage, grounded in placement parameters, is meticulously established. To validate the approach, a simulation tool is devised to calculate press roller motions, ensuring the uniform fiber dispersion on the mandrel and achieving flawless coverage of the shell without wrinkles. This innovative strategy not only optimizes the AFP process for composite layup but also remarkably enhances the overall quality of composite shells. As such, this research carries significant implications for the advancement of composite manufacturing techniques and the concurrent improvement in material performance.

An experimental and numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effects of strain rates on the mechanical responses and ignition mechanism of NEPE-based propellants (Nitrate Ester Plasticized Polyether). The modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) equipped with a high-speed camera was used to capture the mechanical-chemical feature images during the whole impact process. The macro-mesoscopic thermomechanical model was employed to describe the viscous shear flow hotspot formation at the mesoscale. The results showed that the mechanical and ignition responses of the NEPE-based propellants are heavily dependent on strain rates. It is observed that the impact processes can be summarized into four stages: homogeneous deformation, shear flowing, initiation of local shear region and ultimate fracture (or ignition). Selected image sequence and SEM images indicate that viscous shear flow is important to the ignition of propellants. The calculated axial stress-strain curves indicate that propellant exhibits a remarkable rate-dependence and viscous effect. The predicted features of hot spot-ignition evolution are consistent with the experimental phenomenon and prove the critical strain rate of ignition is 4500 s−1.

A facile blade-coating process is developed for large area deposition of uniform thick organic active layers in organic photodiodes (OPDs). Large-area semi-transparent top metal electrodes are thermally evaporated with an optimal deposition rate to achieve good balance between transparency and conductivity for top illumination integration structure with the organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) backplane. The maximum process temperature of the OPD is 85 °C, so that the performance of the OTFT underneath is not affected. Based on the developed integration structure and processes, an all-organic integrated flexible active-matrix imager is developed, having the largest size (130 mm ${\times } 130$ mm), highest resolution ( $1536 {\times } 1536$ pixels, 300 ppi) and lowest process temperature (100 °C) reported so far for the OPD based imagers.

Background: Few studies have identified the links between physical activity (PA), clinical symptoms, and the quality of life (QoL) among mildly infected individuals with COVID-19. This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate how PA levels before infections affect the infectious symptoms and the QoL in mildly infected patients with COVID-19. Methods: An online questionnaire link including participants’ sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics, clinical symptoms during the COVID-19 infectious period, the QoL of the worst symptomatic day, and PA in the last seven days before COVID-19 infections was disclosed. Logistic regression and multiple linear regression analyses were applied to assess the relationships between PA levels in the last seven days before infections and COVID-19-related outcomes. The level of statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Compared to the low-PA-level group, the moderate-PA-level group presented a higher risk of headaches (OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.03 to 1.75, and p = 0.03) and the high-PA-level group presented a higher risk of muscle/body aches (OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.04 to 1.93, and p = 0.03). The adjusted linear regression analysis showed that no associations were found between PA levels in the last seven days before infections and the QoL index value on the worst symptomatic day (moderate-PA-level group: β = −0.04, and p = 0.08; high-PA-level group: β = −0.04, and p = 0.17). However, for the mobility and usual activities dimensions of EQ-5D-5L, the lower-PA-level group had a lower burden of QoL than the higher-PA-level group did on the worst-symptomatic day. Conclusions: Among mildly infected patients with COVID-19, a higher PA level is associated with a higher risk of experiencing clinical symptoms and a lower QoL.

Over the past three decades, the growth of Bi thin films has been extensively explored due to their potential applications in various fields such as thermoelectrics, ferroelectrics, and recently for topological and neuromorphic applications, too. Despite significant research efforts in these areas, achieving reliable and controllable growth of high-quality Bi thin-film allotropes has remained a challenge. Previous studies have reported the growth of trigonal and orthorhombic phases on various substrates yielding low-quality epilayers characterized by surface morphology. In this study, we present a systematic growth investigation, enabling the high-quality growth of Bi epilayers on Bi-terminated Si (111) 1 × 1 surfaces using molecular beam epitaxy. Our work yields a phase map that demonstrates the realization of trigonal, orthorhombic, and pseudocubic thin-film allotropes of Bi. In-depth characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of phase segregation, phase stability, phase transformation, and phase-dependent thickness limitations in various Bi thin-film allotropes. Our study provides recipes for the realization of high-quality Bi thin films with desired phases, offering opportunities for the scalable refinement of Bi into quantum and neuromorphic devices and for revisiting technological proposals for this versatile material platform from the past 30 years.

The study investigated the effects of listening to self-selected music during a warm-up on brain wave synchronization/desynchronization and Wingate test performance. Seventeen healthy young men were required to complete a 10 min warm-up session with or without music intervention, followed by an electroencephalogram (EEG) or Wingate test, respectively. The ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and heart rate (HR) were recorded immediately after the Wingate test. Compared with no music intervention, listening to self-selected music during a warm-up significantly increased peak power and mean power in the Wingate test (p < 0.05), upregulated the α energy percentage in the F3, C3, P3, O1, T3, F4, and Fp2 regions (p < 0.05) and β energy percentage in the F3, O1, and T5 regions (p < 0.05), while it downregulated the δ energy percentage in the F3, P3, O1, F4, and F8 regions (p < 0.05), θ/β in the F3 and O1 regions (p < 0.05), and (θ+α)/(α+β) in the F3 region (p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in the minimum power and fatigue index in the Wingate test between the music intervention and no music intervention, or in RPE and HR after the Wingate test (p > 0.05). This study demonstrated that listening to self-selected music during a warm-up enhances cortical excitability by upregulating the α and β energy percentages and downregulating the δ energy percentage, which may represent a potential mechanism by which listening to self-selected music during a warm-up improves anaerobic performance in healthy young men.

The transmission of SARS-CoV-2 leads to devastating COVID-19 infections around the world, which has affected both human health and the development of industries dependent on social gatherings. Sports events are one of the subgroups facing great challenges. The uncertainty of COVID-19 transmission in large-scale sports events is a great barrier to decision-making with regard to reopening auditoriums. Policymakers and health experts are trying to figure out better policies to balance audience experiences and COVID-19 infection control. In this study, we employed the generalized SEIR model in conjunction with the Wells–Riley model to estimate the effects of vaccination, nucleic acid testing, and face mask wearing on audience infection control during the 2021 Chinese Football Association Super League from 20 April to 5 August. The generalized SEIR modeling showed that if the general population were vaccinated by inactive vaccines at an efficiency of 0.78, the total number of infectious people during this time period would decrease from 43,455 to 6,417. We assumed that the general population had the same odds ratio of entering the sports stadiums and becoming the audience. Their infection probabilities in the stadium were further estimated by the Wells–Riley model. The results showed that if all of the 30,000 seats in the stadium were filled by the audience, 371 audience members would have become infected during the 116 football games in the 2021 season. The independent use of vaccination and nucleic acid testing would have decreased this number to 79 and 118, respectively. The combined use of nucleic acid testing and vaccination or face mask wearing would have decreased this number to 14 and 34, respectively. The combined use of all three strategies could have further decreased this number to 0. According to the modeling results, policymakers can consider the combined use of vaccination, nucleic acid testing, and face mask wearing to protect audiences from infection when holding sports events, which could create a balance between audience experiences and COVID-19 infection control.

IntroductionAging is not only reflected in the degeneration of physiological functions but is also embodied in the decline of psychological and cognitive functions. The decline of cognitive function can reduce the quality of life in older adults, and even potentially cause Alzheimer's disease, which may lead to a heavy burden on patients, families, and society. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of physical activity (PA) on cognitive reaction time in older adults.MethodsA cross-sectional survey design was used in this study. A total of 839 elderly subjects were recruited from Beijing and Shanghai. In total, 792 subjects met the inclusion criteria (age > 60 years, without disability, speech, and hearing impairment), including 384 men (age:67.7 ± 5.7 years) and 408 women (age: 68.2 ± 5.8 years). The PA was assessed by the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE). All kinds of PA were divided into three levels: “Low” (< 50% average score), “Moderate” (50–150% average score), and “High” (>150% average score). The reaction time of subjects was measured by the selective reaction tester (Model: CSTF-XF, TFHT, Beijing, China).ResultsFor leisure-time PA, the results showed that the cognitive reaction time of older adults in the “Low” group (1.11 ± 0.32 s) was significantly longer than that in the “Moderate” group (1.05 ± 0.30 s, p < 0.01) and the “High” group (0.99 ± 0.28 s, p < 0.01). For housework PA, there was no significant difference in the cognitive reaction time among the three groups (“Low”: 1.09 ± 0.31 s; “Moderate”: 1.07 ± 0.31 s; “High”: 1.05 ± 0.28 s, p > 0.05). For work-related PA, the results showed that the cognitive reaction time of older adults in the “Low” group (1.09 ± 0.30 s) was significantly longer than that in the “High” group (0.99 ± 0.28 s) and the “Moderate” group (1.03 ± 0.32 s, p < 0.01).ConclusionThe PA has a positive effect on reducing cognitive reaction time in older adults. It is recommended that older adults maintain a moderate level of leisure PA and work-related PA to delay the decline in cognitive reaction time.

IntroductionLung cancer has the highest rates of morbidity and mortality among all cancers. Patients with lung cancer inevitably confront psychosocial discomforts and progressively experience depression and anxiety that potentially impact the clinical outcomes [e.g., quality of life (QoL)]. These mental disorders in patients with lung cancer may effectively be alleviated with prescribed Chinese traditional mind-body exercises. This study aimed to determine the effect of the exercise prescription containing Chinese traditional mind-body exercise on QoL, depression, and anxiety in patients with lung cancer.MethodsIn this study, 52 patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) recruited from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital were divided into two groups, namely, the experimental group (N = 26) and the control group (N = 26). The experimental group was treated with an 8-week exercise prescription containing aerobic and resistance training. The control group received the usual care during the study period. The QoL, depression, and anxiety were separately investigated using EORTC QLQ-C30, EORTC QLQ-LC13, the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) at baseline and post-intervention. The scores of questionnaires were analyzed using the paired sample and independent sample t-tests to explore the intragroup and intergroup differences, respectively.ResultsThe EORTC QLQ-C30 scores for physical functioning, role functioning, emotional functioning, and global QoL in the experimental group at post-intervention were significantly higher than those at baseline. The EORTC QLQ-C30 scores for fatigue, pain, dyspnea, and insomnia in the experimental group at post-intervention were significantly lower than those at the baseline. The SDS scores (baseline: 57.74 ± 8.77 vs. post-intervention: 51.42 ± 7.31, p < 0.05) and the SAS scores (baseline: 56.63 ± 9.39 vs. post-intervention: 49.16 ± 7.83, p < 0.05) in the experimental group at post-intervention were significantly lower than those at baseline.ConclusionsThe 8-week exercise prescription containing moderate-intensity Baduanjin (5 days per week) can effectively alleviate QoL, depression, and anxiety in patients with NSCLC. IntroductionPatients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) are more likely to develop dementia compared to patients with non-aMCI (naMCI). Among the mixed samples of aMCI and naMCI, exercise interventions are effective for patients with MCI to improve cognitive functions. However, the influence of exercise interventions on patients with aMCI is still unclear.ObjectiveThe objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the influence of exercise interventions on cognitive functions in patients with aMCI.MethodsFour literature databases (PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, and Cochrane Library) and three Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and China Science and Technology Journal Database) were searched from their inception to August 31, 2022. Based on the preliminary search of seven databases and their cited references, a total of 2,290 records were identified. Finally, 10 studies with a total of 28 data points involving 575 participants with aMCI were included in this meta-analysis. If the measurements of outcomes were different among studies, the effect size was synthesized using the standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). If the measurements were the same, the weight mean difference (WMD) with a 95% CI was used to integrate the effect size.Data synthesisThe results showed that exercise interventions had no significant effects on improving several specific domains of cognitive functions including working memory (WMD = −0.05; 95% CI = −0.74 to 0.63; p = 0.88; I2 = 78%) and attention (SMD = 0.20; 95% CI = −0.31 to 0.72; p = 0.44; I2 = 60%). Additionally, exercise interventions had a significant effect on global cognitive function (SMD = 0.70; 95% CI = 0.50–0.90; p < 0.00001; I2 = 29%) and some specific cognitive domains including immediate recall (SMD = 0.55; 95% CI = 0.28–0.81; p < 0.0001; I2 = 0%), delayed recall (SMD = 0.66; 95% CI = 0.45–0.87; p < 0.00001; I2 = 37%), and executive function (SMD = 0.38; 95% CI = 0.16–0.60; p= 0.0006; I2 = 4%). Furthermore, subgroup analysis based on the intervention forms indicated that multi-component interventions (SMD = 0.44; 95% CI = 0.11–0.77; p = 0.009; I2 = 0%) appeared to be less effective than the single-component intervention (SMD = 0.85; 95% CI = 0.60–1.10; p < 0.00001; I2 = 10%) in terms of boosting global cognitive function.ConclusionThis meta-analysis suggests that the exercise can help patients with aMCI improve global cognitive function. Understanding the impact-induced deformation and ignition properties of high-ductility composite energetic material (CEM), including high-energy propellants and casted high explosives, is fundamental to the safety design and usage of rockets and warheads and has been a broad concern in the fields of aerospace and defence. In this study, an impact ignition experiment is designed using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar to quantitate the continuum deformation and reaction responses of a high-ductility CEM sample undergone periodic impact loading pulses. The relation between macroscopic shear deformation rate and localized viscous shear flow heating, melting, and reaction is further investigated utilizing a macro-mesoscopic thermomechanical model. The results show that CEM sample is severely crushed to 2% of the original thickness and laterally extruded with a high shear rate (∼105 s−1). High shear deformation rate contributes to the localized viscous shear flow heating, thereby inducing temperature rise spike (∼200 K) and following ignition. Ignition of CEM sample occurs in the third compression pulse because the thinner sample exhibits a high velocity gradient, which causes a high viscous shear flow heating rate.

In the traditional integrity analysis of solid rocket motors, solid propellants failure and propellant-liner interface debonding were intentionally differentiated. This empirical distinction of failure regions based on the macroscopic phenomenon neglects their physical correlation, consequently increasing both experiment quantity and simulation complexity. Here, by experiments and simulations, propellant-liner interface debonding is shown to be induced by propellant breakage, i.e., the substrate failure. In experiments, interface debonding and propellants failure share the same cavitation and stringing processes in crack initiation, and the measured break strain of solid propellants and fracture energy of interface satisfy a similar temperature/strain-rate dependent shifting phenomenon. The finite element model can well predict both the strain field and the stress-strain response of interface debonding by using the parameters calibrated by tensile tests of solid propellants, verifying that interface debonding is induced by propellants breakage. Overall, failure envelopes of both propellants and interfaces satisfy a similar peak-position shifting phenomenon but different peak-value shifting phenomena. The time-temperature superposition of HTPB polymer binders induces the peak-position shift, and strain concentration and relaxation of propellants in the crack front induce the peak-value evolution. This study is promising to unify and simplify the solid propellants failure and interface debonding in the integrity analysis.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) have been classified as modern refractory diseases. However, safe, well-tolerated, and effective treatments for IBDs are still lacking. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel therapeutic targets with fewer undesirable adverse reactions. A growing body of research has shown that infection with live helminths or exposure to defined helminth-derived components can downregulate pathogenic inflammation due to their immunoregulatory ability. Here we were to explore the protective role of Schistosoma japonicum eggs on murine experimental colitis caused by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) and the underlying mechanism. Frequencies of splenic Treg and Th17 cells were detected by flow cytometry. Protein and mRNA expressions of Foxp3 and RORγt were investigated by Western Blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), respectively. Concentrations of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-β1), interleukin-10 (IL-10) and IL-17A were assessed with ELISA. Expression levels of genes related to glycolipid metabolism were measured with qPCR. The results showed that pre-exposure to S. japonicum eggs contributed to the relief of colitis in the TNBS model, evidenced by improved body weight loss, reversing spleen enlargement and colon shortening, and decreased histology scores. Compared with the TNBS group, the TNBS+Egg group had increased Treg immune response, accompanied by decreased Th17 immune response, leading to the reconstruction of Treg/Th17 balance. In addition, a ratio of Treg/Th17 was correlated negatively with the histological scores in the experiment groups. Furthermore, the regulation of Treg/Th17 balance by S. japonicum eggs was associated with inhibiting the glycolysis pathway and lipogenesis, along with promoting fatty acid oxidation in the TNBS+Egg group. These data indicate that S. japonicum eggs have a protective effect against TNBS-induced colitis, which is related to restoring Treg/Th17 balance and regulating glucose and lipid metabolism.

Introduction: The prevalence of pediatric obesity remains high all over the world. Various exercise interventions have been applied to decrease the visceral fat in young individuals with obesity. But the evidence remains controversial on the effect of the exercise on visceral fat. Moreover, it is unclear which type of the exercise is the most effective for young individuals with overweight or obesity to reduce visceral fat.Objective: The objective of this review and meta-analysis is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of different exercise interventions on visceral fat in young individuals with overweight or obesity.Methods: Four databases consisting of PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, and Cochrane Library were searched prior to May 2022. Fifteen studies with a total of 30 data points involving 1,134 participants were included in this meta-analysis. And the interventions were limited to 4 exercise types [i.e., aerobic exercise (AE), resistance exercise (RE), aerobic exercise combined with resistance exercise (CE), and high-intensity interval training (HIIT)].Data Synthesis: The results showed that AE (Standardized Mean Difference = −0.32; 95% CI = −0.50 to −0.13; p = 0.0007; I2 = 37%) and HIIT (SMD = −0.59; 95% CI = −0.87 to −0.31; p < 0.0001; I2 = 0%) had a significant reduction effect on visceral fat. And the effect of HIIT seemed better than AE. However, RE (SMD = −0.58; 95% CI = −1.34 to 0.17; p = 0.13; I2 = 76%) and CE (SMD = −0.21; 95% CI = −0.81 to 0.38; p = 0.48; I2 = 63%) had a non-significant effect on visceral fat decline. Additionally, compared with the control group, exercise interventions had a significant effect on reducing visceral fat in adolescents (SMD = −0.54; 95% CI = −0.82 to −0.26; p = 0.0001; I2 = 64%) and young adults (SMD = −0.42; 95% CI = −0.69 to −0.15; p = 0.003; I2 = 0%) rather than children (SMD = −0.15; 95% CI = −0.32 to 0.02; p = 0.08; I2 = 0%). And the gender-based subgroup analysis indicated that the effectiveness of the exercise on the reduction of visceral fat was more significant in males (SMD = −1.27; 95% CI = −1.67 to −0.87; p < 0.00001; I2 = 0%) than that in females (SMD = −0.31; 95% CI = −0.48 to −0.14; p = 0.0004; I2 = 0%).Conclusion: This review and meta-analysis demonstrates that exercise interventions are efficient to decrease visceral fat in adolescents (12–18 years old) and young adults (18–24 years old). Among different exercise types, AE and HIIT are helpful for young individuals with overweight or obesity to reduce visceral fat and HIIT appears to be the most effective exercise intervention. The pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC) is complicated with impaired intestinal epithelial barrier and imbalanced gut microbiota. Both selenium and probiotics have shown effects in regulating intestinal flora and ameliorating UC. The objective of this study is to investigate the alleviating effects of Selenium-enriched Bifidobacterium longum DD98 (Se-B. longum DD98) on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice and explore the underlying mechanism. After treatment of B. longum DD98, Se-B. longum DD98, and sulfasalazine for 3 weeks, the disease severity of UC mice was decreased, with colon lengthened and pathological phenotype improved. The expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress parameters were also decreased. Thus, Se-B. longum DD98 showed a stronger effect on relieving the aforementioned symptoms caused by DSS-induced colitis. Exploration of the potential mechanism demonstrated that Se-B. longum DD98 showed higher activities to suppress the inflammatory response by inhibiting the activation of the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), compared to B. longum DD98 and sulfasalazine. Se-B. longum DD98 also significantly improved the intestinal barrier integrity by increasing the expression of tight junction proteins including ZO-1 and occludin. 16S rDNA sequencing analyses showed that Se-B. longum DD98 improved the diversity of the intestinal flora and promoted the abundance of health-benefiting taxa including Lachnospiraceae, Lactobacillaceae, and Prevotellaceae in family level. In conclusion, compared to B. longum DD98 and sulfasalazine, Se-B. longum DD98 showed stronger therapeutic effects on DSS-induced colitis in mice and might be a promising candidate for the treatment of UC.

Some studies show that athlete students are more likely to engage in health-risk behaviors with negative health consequences, while others suggest that they lead a healthier life than their non-athlete peers. Given these inconsistent results, this study aims to compare health behaviors, depression, and perceived health status between athlete and non-athlete students, and explore the associations between health behaviors and health outcomes. An online questionnaire survey including Heath Habits Scale for five health-risk behaviors and five health-promoting behaviors, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and 5-point scale for perceived health status was conducted in Beijing Sports University in March 2021. Data from 372 athlete students and 252 non-athlete students aging from 18 to 22 were included in this study. Abstract Objective Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a major challenge facing the world. Certain guidelines issued by National Health Commission of the People's Repubilic of China recommend intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for adjuvant treatment of COVID-19. However, there is a lack of clinical evidence to support the use of IVIG. Methods This single-center retrospective cohort study included all adult patients with laboratory-confirmed severe COVID-19 in the Respiratory and Critical Care Unit of Dabie Mountain Regional Medical Center, China. Patient information, including demographic data, laboratory indicators, the use of glucocorticoids and IVIG, hospital mortality, the application of mechanical ventilation, and the length of hospital stay was collected. The primary outcome was the composite end point, including death and the use of mechanical ventilation. The secondary outcome was the length of hospital stay. Results Of the 285 patients with confirmed COVID-19, 113 severely ill patients were included in this study. Introduction: Various interventions have been applied to improve recovery from muscle fatigue based on evidence from subjective outcomes, such as perceived fatigue and soreness, which may partly contribute to conflicting results of reducing muscle fatigue. There is a need to assess the effectiveness of various intervention on reducing neuromuscular fatigue assessed by a quantitative outcome, such as electromyography (EMG). The objective of this review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of different interventions and intervention timing for reducing fatigue rates during exercise.Methods: The literature was searched from the earliest record to March 2021. Eighteen studies with a total of 87 data points involving 281 participants and seven types of interventions [i.e., active recovery (AR), compression, cooling, electrical stimulation (ES), light-emitting diode therapy (LEDT), massage, and stretching] were included in this meta-analysis.Results: The results showed that compression (SMD = 0.28; 95% CI = −0.00 to 0.56; p = 0.05; I2 = 58%) and LEDT (SMD = 0.49; 95% CI = 0.11 to 0.88; p = 0.01; I2 = 52%) have a significant recovery effect on reducing muscle fatigue. Additionally, compression, AR, and cooling have a significant effect on reducing muscle fatigue when conducted during exercise, whereas a non-effective trend when applied after exercise.Discussion: This meta-analysis suggests that compression and LEDT have a significant effect on reducing muscle fatigue. The results also suggest that there is a significant effect or an effective trend on reducing muscle fatigue when compression, AR, cooling, and ES are applied during exercise, but not after exercise.

Cupping therapy has been popular in elite athletes in recent years. However, the effect of cupping therapy on reducing muscle fatigue has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate and delayed effects of cupping therapy on reducing biceps brachii fatigue during biceps curls. Twelve healthy untrained participants were recruited for this repeated-measures study. Cupping therapy (–300 mmHg pressure for 5 min) and sham control (no negative pressure for 5 min) were applied after biceps fatigue induced by performing repeated biceps curls at 75% of the 10 repetitions of maximum of the non-dominant hand. Surface electromyography (EMG) with spectral analyses [mean frequency (MNF), median frequency (MDF), and spectral moments ratio (SMR)] were used to assess muscle fatigue during the fatigue task. EMG signals during the first 10 repetitions and the last 10 repetitions of biceps curls were used to assess neuromuscular fatigue. There were significant decreases in MNF and MDF and a significant increase in SMR immediately and 24 h after the sham control (no intervention). When comparing the MNF, MDF, and SMR after cupping therapy to the sham control, there was no significant immediate effect on reducing muscle fatigue. However, there was a significant delayed effect on improving recovery following fatigue for the cupping therapy compared to the sham control (MNF changes: sham 0.87 ± 0.02 vs. cupping 0.91 ± 0.02, p < 0.05; MDF changes sham: 0.85 ± 0.03 vs. cupping: 0.91 ± 0.02, p < 0.05; SMR changes: sham 1.89 ± 0.15 vs. cupping 1.58 ± 0.13, p < 0.05). The findings of this study demonstrate that there is a time effect of cupping therapy for reducing muscle fatigue. Cupping therapy is effective on reducing biceps brachii muscle fatigue after 24 h.

Abstract Background Leukaemia is a malignant leukocyte disorder with a high fatality rate, and current treatments for this disease are unsatisfactory. Therefore, new therapeutic strategies for leukaemia must be developed. Malaria parasite infection has been shown to be effective at combating certain neoplasms in animal experiments. This study is to demonstrate the anti-leukaemia activity of malaria parasite Plasmodium yoelii (P. yoelii) infection,. Methods In this study, the proportion of CD3, CD19, CD11b and Mac-3 cells was analysed by flow cytometry; the levels of IFN-γ and TNF-α in individual serum samples were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the phagocytic activity of macrophages and natural killer (NK) cell activity were measured by flow cytometry. Results We found that P. yoelii infection significantly attenuated the growth of WEHI-3 cells in mice. In addition, tumor cell infiltration into the murine liver and spleen was markedly reduced. We also demonstrated that malaria parasite infection elicited anti-leukaemia activity by promoting immune responses, including increasing the surface markers of T cells (CD3) and B cells (CD19); decreasing the surface markers of monocytes (CD11b) and macrophages (Mac-3); inducing the secretion of IFN-γ and TNF-α; and increasing NK cell and macrophage activity. Conclusions Malaria parasite infection significantly decreases the number of myeloblasts and inhibits neoplasm proliferation in mice. In addition, malaria parasite infection inhibits murine leukaemia by promoting immune responses.

Abstract The gray matter volumes of 58 pairs of twins ranging in age from 12 to 18 were measured by MRI to explore the genetic and environmental impacts on gray matter volume in twin children and adolescents. By means of A/C/E structural equation modeling, it was found that the gray matter volume in children and adolescents was jointly affected by genetic (A: 0.89) and environmental factors while genetic factors play a greater role. The gray matter volume in frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe and lateral temporal lobe was mainly affected by genetics (A: 0.7–0.89), where as the gray matter volume in medial temporal lobe and cingulate cortex was affected by both genetics and environment.

With the increasing integration and miniaturization of electronic devices, heat dissipation has become a major challenge. The traditional printed polymer circuit board can no longer meet the heat dissipation demands of microelectronic equipment. If the heat cannot be removed quickly and effectively, the efficiency of the devices will be decreased and their lifetime will be shortened. In addition, the development of the aerospace, automobiles, light emitting diode (LED{ TA \1 “LED; lightemitting diode” \s “LED” \c 1 }) and energy harvesting and conversion has gradually increased the demand for low-density and high thermal conductive materials. In recent years, carbon fiber (CF{ TA \1 “CF; carbon fiber” \c 1 }) has been widely used for the preparation of polymer composites due to its good mechanical property and ultra-high thermal conductivity. CF materials easily form thermal conduction paths through polymer composites to improve the thermal conductivity. This paper describes the research progress, thermal conductivity mechanisms, preparation methods, factors influencing thermal conductivity and provides relevant suggestions for the development of CF composites for thermal management.

The dynamic mechanical response of high-performance thermoplastic composites over a wide range of strain rates is a challenging research topic for extreme environmental survivability in the field of aerospace engineering. This paper investigates the evolution of the dynamic properties of woven thermoplastic composites with strain rate and damage process at elevated temperatures. Out-of-plane dynamic-compression tests of glass-fiber (GF)- and carbon-fiber (CF)-reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composites were performed using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). Results showed that thermoplastic composites possess strain-rate strengthening effects and high-temperature weakening dependence. GF/PPS and CF/PPS composites had the same strain-rate sensitivity (SRS) below the threshold strain rate. The softening of the matrix at elevated temperatures decreased the modulus but had little effect on strength. Some empirical formulations, including strain-rate and temperature effects, are proposed for more accurately predicting the out-of-plane dynamic-compression behavior of thermoplastic composites. Lastly, the final failure of the specimens was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to explore potential failure mechanisms, such as fiber-bundle shear fracture at high strain rates and stretch break at elevated temperatures.

Complex nonlinear turbulent dynamical systems are ubiquitous in many areas. Quantifying the model error and model uncertainty plays an important role in understanding and predicting complex dynamical systems. In the first part of this article, a simple information criterion is developed to assess the model error in imperfect models. This effective information criterion takes into account the information in both the equilibrium statistics and the temporal autocorrelation function, where the latter is written in the form of the spectrum density that permits the quantification via information theory. This information criterion facilitates the study of model reduction, stochastic parameterizations, and intermittent events. In the second part of this article, a new efficient method is developed to improve the computation of the linear response via the Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem (FDT). This new approach makes use of a Gaussian Mixture (GM) to describe the unperturbed probability density function in high dimensions and avoids utilizing Gaussian approximations in computing the statistical response, as is widely used in the quasi-Gaussian (qG) FDT. Testing examples show that this GM FDT outperforms qG FDT in various strong non-Gaussian regimes.
