Abstract Alternative polyadenylation (APA) plays a crucial role in cancer biology. Here, we used data from the 3′aQTL-atlas, GTEx, and the China Nanjing Lung Cancer GWAS database to explore the association between apaQTL/eQTL-SNPs and the risk of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). The variant T allele of rs277646 in NIT2 is associated with an increased risk of LUAD (OR = 1.12, P = 0.015), lower PDUI values, and higher NIT2 expression. The 3′RACE experiment showed multiple poly (A) sites in NIT2, with the rs277646-T allele causing preferential use of the proximal poly (A) site, resulting in a shorter 3′UTR transcript. This leads to the loss of the hsa-miR-650 binding site, thereby affecting LUAD malignant phenotypes by regulating the expression level of NIT2. Our findings may provide new insights into understanding and exploring APA events in LUAD carcinogenesis.

Abstract The ubiquitination-mediated protein degradation exerts a vital role in the progression of multiple tumors. NEDD4L, which belongs to the E3 ubiquitin ligase NEDD4 family, is related to tumor genesis, metastasis and drug resistance. However, the anti-tumor role of NEDD4L in esophageal carcinoma, and the potential specific recognition substrate remain unclear. Based on public esophageal carcinoma database and clinical sample data, it was discovered in this study that the expression of NEDD4L in esophageal carcinoma was apparently lower than that in atypical hyperplastic esophageal tissue and esophageal squamous epithelium. Besides, patients with high expression of NEDD4L in esophageal carcinoma tissue had longer progression-free survival than those with low expression. Experiments in vivo and in vitro also verified that NEDD4L suppressed the growth and metastasis of esophageal carcinoma. Based on co-immunoprecipitation and proteome analysis, the NEDD4L ubiquitination-degraded protein ITGB4 was obtained. In terms of the mechanism, the HECT domain of NEDD4L specifically bound to the Galx-β domain of ITGB4, which modified the K915 site of ITGB4 in an ubiquitination manner, and promoted the ubiquitination degradation of ITGB4, thus suppressing the malignant phenotype of esophageal carcinoma.

Summary: The role of alternative polyadenylation (APA) in tumor development is becoming increasingly evident, but the impact of APA events on the prognosis of LUAD patients is unclear. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to analyze specific APA events in LUAD to identify novel prognostic biomarkers for LUAD. We first identified prognostic candidate genes for LUAD associated with APA events and validated them in both the East Asian and the USA cohorts, finding that five genes (DCUN1D5, PSMC4, TFAM, THRA, and TMEM100) were of prognostic significance in both populations. Based on this, an APA-based prognostic signature was constructed for the East Asian population. The predictive accuracy of the prognostic signature was further evaluated by the time-dependent ROC, with 1-, 2-, and 3-year AUCs of 0.86, 0.81, and 0.71, respectively. This study may provide new markers for individualized diagnosis and prognostic assessment of LUAD and potential targets for precision treatment.

This study investigates the differential effects of online reviews on actual sales in cases where information regarding source identity and brand equity is accessible. The data were collected from an influential online film review platform in China. Two distinctive features of this study are: (1) source identity is expressed as “verified user” or “unverified user” according to posters' ticket payment status and (2) the interactive effect between source identity and brand equity on box-office success is examined. Using econometric estimations, the results reveal the following: (1) the positive effect of verified users' online review valences on the number of tickets purchased for films decreases in association with high brand strength; (2) the variance of verified users' online reviews positively affects the number of tickets purchased for films with high brand strength, but such an effect is negative with low brand strength; (3) the variance of unverified users' online reviews positively influences the number of tickets purchased for films with low brand strength, but it negatively influences the number of tickets purchased for films with high brand strength. Thus, these findings suggest that it is better for business leaders to understand not only why producers of online reviews are satisfied or dissatisfied, but also how consumers interpret and interact with different types of online reviews and which are important. This requires a smart and flexible collaboration among different business units within film company.

This paper explores the microscopic behavioral characteristics of various nodes in a social network and the macro-evolution law of its formation. Taking the Sina microblog in China as an example, the article presents a multi-agent simulation analysis on the Netlogo platform. The results show that a double limited and heterogeneous feature is possessed by the social network, namely the limited size of the network and the in-degree and out-degree of the nodes, as well as the heterogeneous attributes of the nodes. Compared with a small-world and scale-free network, the double limited and heterogeneous social network can better simulate a real social network. It not only has the overall structural characteristics of a small-world and scale-free network, but also microscopically reflects the influence and control of different types of nodes in a social network.

- Abstract
This paper aims to test the influence of environmental penalties on analyst recommendations from the perspective of negative environmental governance performance, and further tests the influence of environmental penalties on corporate environmental governance. We subdivide environmental penalties into two dimensions: environmental penalty frequency and environmental penalty intensity based on the breadth and depth of environmental penalties. Then we take listed firms in heavy pollution industries in China from 2015 to 2021 as research samples, and use OLS regression analysis to test the impact of environmental penalty frequency and environmental penalty intensity on analyst recommendations. We find that both environmental penalty frequency and environmental penalty degree are significantly and negatively correlated with analyst recommendations. The heterogeneity analysis finds that the negative impacts of corporate environmental penalties on analyst recommendations are mainly reflected in the group with larger firm size and the group with greater industry competition degree. Further analysis shows that both environmental penalty frequency and environmental penalty degree can promote corporate environmental governance. The results show that environmental penalties bring lower analyst recommendations and reputation loss to enterprises. Under the deterrent effect of environmental penalties and the negative impact of analyst recommendations, enterprises have the motivation to improve environmental governance. This paper finds that corporate negative environmental governance performance is truthfully embedded in analyst recommendation decisions, providing evidence for the mechanism and path for China's environmental governance system to play its role. These findings are conducive to providing new evidence for analysts to play the role of capital market information intermediary. This study expands the literature on the economic consequences of corporate environmental penalties and enriches the literature on the factors affecting analyst recommendations from the new perspective of corporate negative environmental performance. - Abstract
Background: This study aimed to elucidate the consistency of differentially expressed hub mRNAs and proteins in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) across populations and to construct a comprehensive LUAD prognostic signature. Methods: The transcriptomic and proteomics data from different populations were standardized and analyzed using the same criteria to identify the consistently differential expressed mRNAs and proteins across genders and races. We then integrated prognosis-related mRNAs with clinical, pathological, and EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) mutation data to construct a survival model, subsequently validating it across populations. Through plasma proteomics, plasma proteins that consistently differential expressed with LUAD tissues were screened and validated, with their associations discerned by measuring expressions in tumor tissues and tumor vascular normalization. Results: The consistency rate of differentially expressed mRNAs and proteins was ~20-40%, with ethnic factors leading to about 40-60% consistency of differentially expressed mRNA or protein across populations. The survival model based on the identified eight hub mRNAs as well as stage, smoking status, and EGFR mutations, demonstrated good prognostic prediction capabilities in both Western and East Asian populations, with a higher number of unfavorable variables indicating poorer LUAD prognosis. Notably, GPI expression in tumor tissues was inversely correlated with vascular normalization and positively correlated with plasma GPI expression. Conclusion: Our study underscores the significance of integrating transcriptomics and proteomics data, emphasizing the need to account for genetic diversity among ethnic groups. The developed survival model may offer a holistic perspective on LUAD progression, enhancing prognosis and therapeutic strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With personal annual income data of 5 consecutive years (1998–2002) from CHIPS, dynamic characteristics of Chinese income are studied, especially two hypotheses of time reversal symmetry and independent growth rate are tested. In high income regions, an increasing trend of the standard deviation of income growth rate is observed, which means independent growth rate hypothesis fails to hold. This empirical finding is designed as a new mechanism and added into Gibrat’s model, which yields a distribution with a power-law tail. Our model’s simulation result shows that increasing variance of income growth rates for higher income regions is the key ingredient to get the power-law tail.

In this study, we examined whether private benefits of control can influence corporate social responsibility performance. We used both separations between cash flow and control rights and the length of the longest control chain to measure private benefits of control. Consistent with the private benefits motive, we found that firms with greater divergence between cash-flow rights and control rights, with longer control chains, are associated with lower corporate social responsibility performance. Further, we found that earnings management and capital occupation by the controlling shareholder are the two effective channels through which private benefits of control affect corporate social responsibility. Additionally, this negative association is more pronounced for firms located in regions with low degree of law environment and with CEOs appointed by the largest shareholder. Additional robustness tests using alternative CSR measurements, and two-stage least squares (2SLS) regression support the main findings. This study highlights a new determination channel of private benefits of control and practically guides the introduction of corporate social responsibility activities in emerging markets.

Precast concrete comprises the basic components of modular buildings. The efficiency of precast concrete building component production directly impacts the construction time and cost. In the processes of precast component production, mold setting has a significant influence on the production efficiency and cost, as well as reducing the resource consumption. However, the development of mold setting plans is left to the experience of production staff, with outcomes dependent on the quality of human skill and experience available. This can result in sub-optimal production efficiencies and resource wastage. Accordingly, in order to improve the efficiency of precast component production, this paper proposes an optimization model able to maximize the average utilization rate of pallets used during the molding process. The constraints considered were the order demand, the size of the pallet, layout methods, and the positional relationship of components. A heuristic algorithm was used to identify optimization solutions provided by the model. Through empirical analysis, and as exemplified in the case study, this research is significant in offering a prefabrication production planning model which improves pallet utilization rates, shortens component production time, reduces production costs, and improves the resource utilization. The results clearly demonstrate that the proposed method can facilitate the precast production plan providing strong practical implications for production planners.

In periods of rapid urbanization, investment in urban infrastructure should not only meet the increasing demands of all urban people, but also be equally allocated between cities to achieve social equity and sustainable development. This paper aimed to conduct quantitative research on the unbalance of urban infrastructure investment between cities in China. The measurement models for inequality, bi-polarization and the mobility of urban infrastructure investment were constructed by means of the Gini coefficient, bi-polarization index and mobility function from the urban system, and an empirical study was conducted based on panel data from 2006 to 2014. The results show that: (1) The overall inequality of urban infrastructure investment in China’s urban system was relatively prominent and showed a “U-shaped” change generally. (2) The inequality between different administrative levels or regional cities only partially accounted for the overall inequality of China’s urban system. (3) Inequality and bi-polarization showed inconsistent performance. (4) Mobility played a positive role in reducing the inequality and bi-polarization. Based on the empirical findings and the reality of China’s urban infrastructure investment and financing, targeted policy suggestions were proposed in terms of adjusting inequality and bi-polarization, innovating investment and financing mechanisms, and optimizing urban infrastructure investment strategies.

In order to improve public financing sustainability in China, the Chinese government has announced several administrative policies on crowdfunding, concerning platform construction and operation, in recent years. However, the existing policy scope rarely mentions the importance of social psychology, which also plays a decisive role in determining the participation and success rates of crowdfunding. Therefore, this study uses the knowledge from social exchange theory (SET) and customer value perspective (CVP) to develop and validate a conceptual model of the key determinants of the public&rsquo, s intention in investing in crowdfunded projects in China. Based on the primary survey data, the SEM (structural equation modeling) estimations suggest that: (1) communication, shared values, investors&rsquo, perceived benefits, and perceived risk have significant effects on crowdfunding investors&rsquo, trust in fundraisers of a particular crowdfunding project, which in turn act on their commitment and intentions to invest in the project, (2) trust strengthens funding intentions through fulfilling commitments, whereas its direct effect on funding intentions is insignificant, (3) commitment has a direct and significant positive effect on the enhancement of funding intentions. These findings propose a new perspective of improving public policies to support small and micro enterprises (SMEs) and individual innovative projects in China.

The bilateral trading platform is an intermediary system which serves both consumers and suppliers. To make this happen, platforms must attract users on board from both sides and make them trade with each other. Spatial distribution of suppliers has the significant impact on consumers platform adoption decision, but how does the supplier’s network affect the platform competition has rarely been studied. In this paper, the supplier’s spatial network is added to bilateral trading platform network effect model, and influences of the supplier’s network structure on the platform competition are discussed. Simulation results show that, compared with the central network, the decentralized network is more conducive to the platform competition. When suppliers on two competitive platforms follow the same network structure, the reinforcement effect of the first-mover advantage on platforms will vanish. This result is robust in different spatial network patterns. Conversely, when one of the platforms has a superior network structure of suppliers, its first-mover advantage will get strengthened, and it will achieve a better competition result; otherwise, its first-mover advantage will get weakened. These results provide an insight into the platform competition mechanism and will help platforms to make corresponding competitive strategies.

Attitude persistence research in consumer behavior has been predominantly associated with high- rather than low-involvement processing (Jones, 2008). However, with the recognition that advertising information is often processed in low-involvement conditions, researchers have been concerned with how consumers’ brand attitudes are formed initially and how these attitudes endure over time when consumers are not motivated to process an advertising message (Wang & Muehling, 2010). It has been suggested that nonverbal peripheral cues (e.g., pictures) affect information recall and attitude formation under the low-involvement condition (Ang & Lim, 2006).
