Abstract Photothermal therapy (PTT) for cancers guided by optical imaging has recently shown great potential for precise diagnosis and efficient therapy. The second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) fluorescence imaging (FLI) is highly desirable owing to its good spatial and temporal resolution, deep tissue penetration, and negligible tissue toxicity. Organic small molecules are attractive as imaging and treatment agents in biomedical research because of their low toxicity, fast clearance rate, diverse structures, ease of modification, and excellent biocompatibility. Various organic small molecules have been investigated for biomedical applications. However, there are few reports on the use of croconaine dyes (CRs), especially NIR-II emission CRs. To our knowledge, there have been no prior reports of NIR-II emissive small organic photothermal agents (SOPTAs) based on CRs. Herein, we report a croconaine dye (CR-TPE-T)-based nanoparticle (CR NP) with absorption and fluorescence emission in the NIR-I and NIR-II windows, respectively. The CR NPs exhibited intense NIR absorption, outstanding photothermal properties, and good biological compatibility. In vivo studies showed that CR NPs not only achieved real-time, noninvasive NIR-II FLI of tumors, but also induced significant tumor ablation with laser irradiation guided by imaging, without apparent side effects, and promoted the formation of antitumor immune memory in a colorectal cancer model. In addition, the CR NPs displayed efficient inhibition of breast tumor growth, improved longevity of mice and triggered efficient systemic immune responses, which further inhibited tumor metastasis to the lungs. Our study demonstrates the great potential of CRs as therapeutic agents in the NIR-II region for cancer diagnosis.

In the title molecule, C11H11BrO3, the dihydroindene moiety is essentially planar but with a slight twist in the saturated portion of the five-membered ring. The methoxy groups lie close to the above plane. In the crystal, π-stacking interactions between six-membered rings form stacks of molecules extending along the a-axis direction, which are linked by weak C—H...O and C—H...Br hydrogen bonds. A Hirshfeld surface analysis was performed showing H...H, O...H/H...O and Br...H/H...Br contacts make the largest contributions to intermolecular interactions in the crystal.

When the CO2 in a supercritical state (SCCO2) is released from deep coal seams, it reacts with minerals in coal, changing the porosity of coal, which in turn affects the effect of CO2 sequestration in coal seams and the effect of increasing methane production. In order to discover the influence characteristics of SCCO2-H2O-coal rock interaction on the porosity in coal, the experiments on the supercritical CO2 reforming coal under different water content conditions were carried out with coking coal as the research object. Based on the results of mineral composition and porosity measurements, the differences between the main minerals and the changes in pore cleavage at various scales in coal were compared, and the action mechanism of the SCCO2 fluid on the pore cleavage properties under various water content states was explored. The results show that: ① After the SCCO2 treatment, the surface of the coal body is rough and loose, some fissures are penetrated as a result of mineral dissolution, and the connectivity of micro fissure is improved. ② The SCCO2 fluid has a “pore-expanding”effect on coal, which is manifested by a decrease of the content of micro- and small pores, and an increase of the proportion of medium- and large pores, i.e., the conversion of micro- and small-sized pores to large pores, as well as the improvement of pore connectivity. Furthermore, it is discovered that the fractal dimension of the adsorption pores of the coal samples increases slightly in size and roughness, while the fractal dimension of the seepage pores decreases significantly, and the complexity and non-homogeneity are reduced. ③ The SCCO2 fluid has the best solubility on the carbonate minerals in coal, followed by clay minerals, and with the increase of water content, the proportion of carbonate minerals in the extracted coal first increases and then decreases. The SCCO2 fluid makes the carbonate minerals in the coal samples of the dry basal state and saturated water state dissolve significantly, which effectively improves the pore structure, and the effect on the coal samples of the saturated water state is better. After the air-dry basal coal samples were subjected to the SCCO2, the newly formed dolomite minerals gathered in the pore throats to cause the plugging effect, reducing the original large pore size, which is the main cause of the differential changes in the pore space of coals with different water content states.

Abstract As a new product of rapid urbanization, the sprawl of urban construction land can objectively reflect urban land use efficiency, which is of great significance to China's new urban construction. This study aimed to summarize the expansion patterns and utilization efficiency of urban construction land in China from the perspectives of the status, speed and trends of expansion, and to uncover the key factors that lead to the differential distribution of the expansion of construction land. It can also provide land management experience for other countries with rapid expansion of construction land. The results show the following. (1) The expansion of China's construction land presents a "point–line–plane" pattern of evolution, forming changing stages of point-like aggregation, linear series and planar spread. (2) China's construction land shows the characteristics of disorderly spread, a low utilization rate and low output efficiency. The speed of expansion presents clear characteristics of being high in the east and low in the west, mostly concentrated in the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomeration. Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou have the highest intensity of construction land use. In Shandong Peninsula and eastern coastal areas, the intensity of the construction land use is generally high. In Xinjiang and Xizang, the intensity of construction land use is relatively low. (3) The urban economic level, population size, industrial structure, foreign investment and land policies have significant effects on the spatial distribution of the expansion of construction land.

Land use/land cover represents the interactive and comprehensive influences between human activities and natural conditions, leading to potential conflicts among natural and human-related issues as well as among stakeholders. This study introduced economic standards for farmers. A hybrid approach (CA-ABM) of cellular automaton (CA) and an agent-based model (ABM) was developed to effectively deal with social and land-use synergic issues to examine human–environment interactions and projections of land-use conversions for a humid basin in south China. Natural attributes and socioeconomic data were used to analyze land use/land cover and its drivers of change. The major modules of the CA-ABM are initialization, migration, assets, land suitability, and land-use change decisions. Empirical estimates of the factors influencing the urban land-use conversion probability were captured using parameters based on a spatial logistic regression (SLR) model. Simultaneously, multicriteria evaluation (MCE) and Markov models were introduced to obtain empirical estimates of the factors affecting the probability of ecological land conversion. An agent-based CA-SLR-MCE-Markov (ABCSMM) land-use conversion model was proposed to explore the impacts of policies on land-use conversion. This model can reproduce observed land-use patterns and provide links for forest transition and urban expansion to land-use decisions and ecosystem services. The results demonstrated land-use simulations under multi-policy scenarios, revealing the usefulness of the model for normative research on land-use management.

Abstract Objectives To develop and validate a deep learning (DL) model for automated segmentation of hepatic and portal veins, and apply the model in blood-free future liver remnant (FLR) assessments via CT before major hepatectomy. Methods 3-dimensional 3D U-Net models were developed for the automatic segmentation of hepatic veins and portal veins on contrast-enhanced CT images. A total of 170 patients treated from January 2018 to March 2019 were included. 3D U-Net models were trained and tested under various liver conditions. The Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and volumetric similarity (VS) were used to evaluate the segmentation accuracy. The use of quantitative volumetry for evaluating resection was compared between blood-filled and blood-free settings and between manual and automated segmentation. Results The DSC values in the test dataset for hepatic veins and portal veins were 0.66 ± 0.08 (95% CI: (0.65, 0.68)) and 0.67 ± 0.07 (95% CI: (0.66, 0.69)), the VS values were 0.80 ± 0.10 (95% CI: (0.79, 0.84)) and 0.74 ± 0.08 (95% CI: (0.73, 0.76)), respectively No significant differences in FLR, FLR% assessments, or the percentage of major hepatectomy patients were noted between the blood-filled and blood-free settings (p = 0.67, 0.59 and 0.99 for manual methods, p = 0.66, 0.99 and 0.99 for automated methods, respectively) according to the use of manual and automated segmentation methods. Conclusion Fully automated segmentation of hepatic veins and portal veins and FLR assessment via blood-free CT before major hepatectomy are accurate and applicable in clinical cases involving the use of DL. Critical relevance statement Our fully automatic models could segment hepatic veins, portal veins, and future liver remnant in blood-free setting on CT images before major hepatectomy with reliable outcomes. Key Points Fully automatic segmentation of hepatic veins and portal veins was feasible in clinical practice. Fully automatic volumetry of future liver remnant (FLR)% in a blood-free setting was robust. Abstract Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) has become the popular critical post-operative consequences, especially cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, leading to an increased risk of mortality. However, no therapeutic effect about POCD. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria living in the gut and help to reduce the risk of POCD. However, the detailed mechanism is still not entirely known. Therefore, our research aims to uncover the effect and mechanism of probiotics in relieving POCD and to figure out the possible relationship between kynurenine metabolic pathway. 36 rats were grouped into three groups: sham operated group (S group, n = 12), Cardiopulmonary bypass group (CPB group, n = 12), and probiotics+CPB (P group, n = 12). After CPB model preparation, water maze test and Garcia score scale was performed to identify the neurological function. Immunofluorescence and Hematoxylin and eosin staining has been used for hippocampal neurons detection. Brain injury related proteins, oxidative stress factors, and inflammatory factors were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Neuronal apoptosis was detected by TdT-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) staining and western blot. High-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS) was performed to detect the key factors of the kynurenine metabolic pathway. Abstract Background Mental health is a matter of quality of life among older adults. This study aimed to explore the association between the socioeconomic status (SES) perception and mental health of older adults using data from 2017 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS). Methods Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression was used to analyse the association between SES perception and mental health, and the substitution model and variable methods were used to check the robustness of the results. Moreover, we adopted the Sobel model to analyse the mediating roles of social trust and justice. Results SES perception was positively associated with mental health, and this association was mediated by social trust and justice. This kind of positive association was mainly embodied in those groups with the highest or lowest objective SES. In other words, this study confirmed the phenomenon of “a contented mind is a perpetual feast” in Chinese society. Conclusions Higher SES perception is associated with improved mental health for Chinese older adults. It is imperative to prioritize efforts to enhance the perceptual abilities of older adults, particularly those with the highest or lowest objective SES, to promote their overall subjective well-being.

Abstract Since the first report on single-layer MoS2 based transistor, rapid progress has been achieved in two-dimensional (2D) material-based atomically thin electronics, providing an alternative approach to solve the bottleneck in silicon device miniaturization. In this scenario, reliable contact between the metal electrodes and the subnanometer-thick 2D materials becomes crucial in determining the device performance. Here, utilizing the quasi-van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy of metals on fluorophlogopite mica, we demonstrate an all-stacking method for the fabrication of 2D devices with high-quality vdW contacts by mechanically transferring pre-deposited metal electrodes. This technique is applicable for complex device integration with sizes up to the wafer scale and is also capable of tuning the electric characteristics of the interfacial junctions by transferring selective metals. Our results provide an efficient, scalable, and low-cost technique for 2D electronics, allowing high-density device integration as well as a handy tool for fundamental research in vdW materials.

Abstract Background The thalamus has a central role in the pathophysiology of idiopathic cervical dystonia (iCD); however, the nature of alterations occurring within this structure remain largely elusive. Using a structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) approach, we examined whether abnormalities differ across thalamic subregions/nuclei in patients with iCD. Methods Structural MRI data were collected from 37 patients with iCD and 37 healthy controls (HCs). Automatic parcellation of 25 thalamic nuclei in each hemisphere was performed based on the FreeSurfer program. Differences in thalamic nuclei volumes between groups and their relationships with clinical information were analysed in patients with iCD. Results Compared to HCs, a significant reduction in thalamic nuclei volume primarily in central medial, centromedian, lateral geniculate, medial geniculate, medial ventral, paracentral, parafascicular, paratenial, and ventromedial nuclei was found in patients with iCD (P

Abstract Topographic Rossby waves (TRWs) dominate the low-frequency variability of deep ocean currents and play a crucial role in energy exchange and material mixing. On the continental slope of the southwestern South China Sea, a deep-water mooring was deployed to observe TRWs for a period of ~ 40 days. The TRWs, with a wavelength of 109 km, account for 41.3% of the subinertial variations. A ray-tracing model was applied to investigate the propagation and energy source. The results showed that the TRWs propagated from the northeast of the mooring location and were most likely caused by the mesoscale eddy disturbances off the Vietnam coast. This study provides a new perspective on examining the impact of mesoscale eddies off Vietnam on abyssal currents.

Abstract Background Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder. Besides skeletal abnormalities, CCD is often associated with dental complications, such as multiple supernumerary teeth and permanent teeth impaction or delayed eruption. Methods Supernumerary teeth of axial, sagittal and coronal CBCT view was characterized in detail and 3D image reconstruction was performed. Number and location of teeth, morphology of supernumerary teeth, positional relationship between supernumerary and adjacent permanent teeth, direction of supernumerary teeth in CCD patients were analyzed. Results The mean age of the 3 CCD patients in this study was 16.7 years. Among 36 supernumerary teeth, the majority of them were identified as apical side located and lingual side located. Normal orientation was the most common type in this study, followed by sagittal orientation, and horizontal orientation. Horizontal orientation teeth were all distributed in the mandible. Abstract Background The health and size of the testes are crucial for boar fertility. Testicular development is tightly regulated by epigenetics. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is a prevalent internal modification on mRNA and plays an important role in development. The mRNA m6A methylation in boar testicular development still needs to be investigated. Results Using the MeRIP-seq technique, we identify and profile m6A modification in boar testes between piglets and adults. The results showed 7783 distinct m6A peaks in piglets and 6590 distinct m6A peaks in adults, with 2,471 peaks shared between the two groups. Enrichment of GO and KEGG analysis reveal dynamic m6A methylation in various biological processes and signalling pathways. Meanwhile, we conjointly analyzed differentially methylated and expressed genes in boar testes before and after sexual maturity, and reproductive related genes (TLE4, TSSK3, TSSK6, C11ORF94, PATZ1, PHLPP1 and PAQR7) were identified. Functional enrichment analysis showed that differential genes are associated with important biological functions, including regulation of growth and development, regulation of metabolic processes and protein catabolic processes. Conclusion The results demonstrate that m6A methylation, differential expression and the related signalling pathways are crucial for boar testicular development. These results suggest a role for m6A modification in boar testicular development and provided a resource for future studies on m6A function in boar testicular development.

Logistics is playing a significant role in supporting economic growth and material security during the epidemic period and it has been experiencing a rapid development in recent years. With the issues of personalisation and cost, the economy and society ask for higher requirements for logistics storage systems. The rational design of the functional area layout is an essential step to improve the operational efficiency of the logistics warehousing system. In reality, due to warehouse design and equipment application, there has been a gradual increase in irregular warehouses. By taking an irregular warehouse as an example, combining the operation status quo, this paper clarifies the functional area settings and constructs a 0–1 integer planning model based on the grid and systematic layout planning method with constraints, such as the unique functional attributes of the grid. We optimised the genetic algorithm based on the warehouse irregularity factor and the grids factor, and then solve it through MATLAB. Finally, by using the Flexsim software, simulation metrics were selected for evaluation, the method feasibility is verified.

Abstract Importance Diabetes mellitus (DM) is thought to be closely related to arterial stenotic or occlusive disease caused by atherosclerosis. However, there is still no definitive clinical evidence to confirm that patients with diabetes have a higher risk of restenosis. Objective This meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effect of DM on restenosis among patients undergoing endovascular treatment, such as percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) or stenting. Data sources and study selection The PubMed/Medline, EMBASE and Cochrane Library electronic databases were searched from 01/1990 to 12/2022, without language restrictions. Trials were included if they satisfied the following eligibility criteria: (1) RCTs of patients with or without DM; (2) lesions confined to the coronary arteries or femoral popliteal artery; (3) endovascular treatment via PTA or stenting; and (4) an outcome of restenosis at the target lesion site. The exclusion criteria included the following: (1) greater than 20% of patients lost to follow-up and (2) a secondary restenosis operation. Data extraction and synthesis Two researchers independently screened the titles and abstracts for relevance, obtained full texts of potentially eligible studies, and assessed suitability based on inclusion and exclusion criteria.. Disagreements were resolved through consultation with a third researcher. Treatment effects were measured by relative ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using random effects models. The quality of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria. Main outcomes and measures The main observation endpoint was restenosis, including > 50% stenosis at angiography, or TLR of the primary operation lesion during the follow-up period. Results A total of 31,066 patients from 20 RCTs were included. Patients with DM had a higher risk of primary restenosis after endovascular treatment (RR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.25–1.62; p = 0.001). Conclusions and relevance This meta-analysis of all currently available RCTs showed that patients with DM are more prone to primary restenosis after endovascular treatment.

Abstract Background Glomus Tumor (GT) are benign neoplasms that originate from mesenchymal cells. It presents as tenderness and cold allodynia in the digits, especially in the subungual region. There are a few studies that investigated the mechanism of pain. Objectives To analyze the clinical-pathologic characteristics of GT and to identify the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and CGRP in it, further, to explore the possible mechanism of pain. Methods The clinical and pathological data of 60 GT patients were retrospectively analyzed. Tissue microarrays and immunohistochemistry were used to measure the expression of IL-1β, IL-6 and CGRP. Results GT is more common in females and the ratio of male to was near to 1:2, mostly in middle-aged people. It often occurs in fingertips, especially the thumbs. Patients often present with spontaneous pain, tenderness, and cold hypersensitivity. Both the two pain mediators IL-1β and IL-6 were highly expressed in GT cells of patients with and without cold hypersensitivity. While CGRP was not expressed in GT. Study limitations Low sample size and further research is needed to explore the specific mechanism. Conclusions IL-1β and IL-6 were highly expressed in GT cells, suggesting that IL-1β and IL-6 have certain nociceptive roles in GT. In the 4 patients with cold intolerance, the intensity of IL-1β and IL-6 staining was also strong, suggesting that they may not play a role in the cold hypersensitivity. However, since there are only 4 patients with cold intolerance, it’s necessary to conduct further in-depth research using a larger sample size. The specific role of CGRP in GT has not been found yet.

Abstract Objective To compare the potential efficacy and safety of dual therapy and quadruple therapy with vonoprazan (VPZ) as well as the standard quadruple therapy of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in Hainan province. Methods A single-centre, non-blinded, non-inferiority randomized controlled trial was conducted at the outpatient department of gastroenterology at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University from June 2022 to February 2023. 135 patients aged 18–75 years with Hp infection were enrolled and randomized into three different groups (group V1: VPZ 20 mg twice a day and amoxicillin 1.0 g three times a day for 14 days V2: vonoprazan 20 mg, amoxicillin capsules 1.0 g, furazolidone 0.1 g and bismuth potassiulm citrate 240 mg, twice daily for 14 days;; group V3: ilaprazole 5 mg, Amoxicillin 1.0 g, Furazolidone 100 mg, bismuth potassiulm citrate 240 mg, twice a day for 14 days). Four weeks after the end of treatment, Hp eradication was confirmed by rechecking 13C-urea breath test (UBT). Results The eradication efficacy of V1 and V3 was non-inferior to that of V2, which is consistent with the results obtained from the Kruskal-Wallis H test. The eradication rate by intentional analysis was 84.4% (38/45, 95%CI 73.4%–95.5%, P>0.05) for all the three groups. If analyzed by per-protocol, the eradication rates were 88.4% (38/43, 95%CI 78.4%–98.4%), 92.7% (38/41, 95%CI 84.4%–101.0%),88.4% (38/43，95%CI 78.4%–98.4%) in groups V1, V2 and V3, respectively, which did not show a significant difference (P > 0.05). Summary: Background: Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) quality and identification of the early upper gastrointestinal (UGI) neoplasm play an important role in detecting the UGI neoplasm. However, the optimal method for quality control in daily OGD procedures is currently lacking. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a real-time intelligent quality-control system (IQCS), which combines OGD quality control with lesion detection of early UGI neoplasms. Methods: We performed a multicentre, single-blinded, randomised controlled trial at 6 hospitals in China. Patients aged 40–80 years old who underwent painless OGD were screened for enrolment in this study. Patients with a history of advanced UGI cancer, stenosis, or obstruction in UGI tract were excluded. Eligible subjects were randomly assigned (1:1) to either the routine or IQCS group to undergo standard OGD examination and OGD examination aided by IQCS, respectively. Patients were masked to the randomisation status. The primary outcome was the detection of early UGI neoplasms. All analyses were done on a per-protocol basis. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04720924. Findings: Between January 16, 2021 and December 23, 2022, 1840 patients were randomised (IQCS group: 919, routine group: 921). The full analysis set consisted of 914 in the IQCS group and 915 in the routine group. The early UGI neoplasms detection rate in the IQCS group (6.1%, 56/914) was significantly higher than in the routine group (2.3%, 21/915; P = 0.0001). Background: Proton therapy (PT) has unique biologic properties with excellent clinical outcomes for the management of localized prostate cancer. Here, we aim to characterize the toxicity of PT for patients with localized prostate cancer and propose mitigation strategies using a large institutional database. Methods: We reviewed medical records of 2772 patients with localized prostate cancer treated with definitive PT between May 2006 through January 2020. Disease risk was stratified according to National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines as low [LR, n = 640]; favorable-intermediate [F-IR, n = 849]; unfavorable-intermediate [U-IR, n = 851]; high [HR, n = 315]; or very high [VHR, n = 117]. Descriptive statistics and Kaplan-Meier estimates assessed toxicity and freedom from biochemical relapse (FFBR). Results: Median follow-up was 7.0 years. The median dose was 78 Gy(RBE)(range: 72–79.2 Gy) in 2.0 Gy(RBE) fractions; 63 % of patients received 78 Gy(RBE) in 39 fractions, and 29 % received 76 Gy(RBE) in 38 fractions. Overall rates of late grade ≥3 GU and GI toxicity were 0.87 % and 1.01 %, respectively. Two patients developed grade 4 late GU toxicity and seven patients with grade 4 late GI toxicity. All patients experiencing severe late grade 4 toxicities were treated to 78 Gy(RBE) in 39 fractions with 80 Gy(RBE) dose to the anterior rectal wall and/or bladder neck. The 10-year FFBR rates for patients with LR to U-IR disease were compared between those treated with 76 and 78 Gy(RBE); the rates were 94.5 % (95 % confidence interval [CI] 92.4–96.0 %) and 93.2 % (95 % CI 91.3–95.7 %), respectively (log-rank p = 0.22). Conclusions: Proton therapy is associated with low rates of late grade ≥3 GU and GI toxicity. While rare, late grade 4 toxicities occurred in nine (0.3 %) patients. De-escalation to a total dose of 76 Gy(RBE) yields excellent clinical outcomes for patients with LR to U-IR disease with the potential for significant reductions in grade ≥3 late toxicity.

BackgroundThis study conducts a systematic review through meta-analysis, comparing the composition and diversity of the gut microbiome in patients with esophageal cancer and healthy individuals, and explores the relationship between risk factors and related factors of esophageal cancer.MethodsAccording to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), we comprehensively searched the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library. In addition, we applied the R programming language version 4.0.3 and Stata 15.1 software for data analysis. We also implemented the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS), funnel plot analysis, Egger’s test, and Begg’s test to assess the risk of bias.ResultsIn this study, a total of 328 studies were identified through the literature search. Among them, 117 duplicate studies were removed, and 202 studies were excluded based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Finally, 9 studies were included in the analysis, involving a total of 216 patients with esophageal carcinoma and 352 healthy controls. Four studies provided Chao1 index for quantitative consolidation (ES = 637.41, 95% CI: 549.16 to 725.66, p = 0.000, I2 = 98.2%). Two studies [27, 29] reported ACE index (ES = 438.89, 95% CI: 362.42 to 515.35, p = 0.000, I2 = 97%). Seven studies [26,27,29,30,32] reported the Shannon index for quantitative consolidation (ES = 4.38, 95% CI: 3.95 to 4.81, p = 0.000, I2 = 99%). At the phylum level, the abundance of Bacteroidetes(ES = 37.8, 95% CI: 25.75 to 49.85, p = 0.000, I2 = 87.2%) and Proteobacteria(ES = 7.48, 95% CI: 5.02 to 8.85, p = 0.04, I2 = 2.4%) have statistical difference between ESCC and HC. There was no significant difference between ESCC and HC in the abundance of genera(p>0.05).ConclusionsThis observational meta-analysis revealed that changes in the GM were correlated with esophageal carcinoma, and variations in some advantageous GM might involve regional differences. Additionally, the study aims to facilitate early diagnosis of esophageal cancer and improve screening and diagnostic efficiency.

Background and ObjectiveExoskeleton robot control should ideally be based on human voluntary movement intention. The readiness potential (RP) component of the motion-related cortical potential is observed before movement in the electroencephalogram and can be used for intention prediction. However, its single-trial features are weak and highly variable, and existing methods cannot achieve high cross-temporal and cross-subject accuracies in practical online applications. Therefore, this work aimed to combine a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) framework with a transfer learning (TL) strategy to predict the lower limb voluntary movement intention, thereby improving the accuracy while enhancing the model generalization capability; this would also provide sufficient processing time for the response of the exoskeleton robotic system and help realize robot control based on the intention of the human body.MethodsThe signal characteristics of the RP for lower limb movement were analyzed, and a parameter TL strategy based on CNN was proposed to predict the intention of voluntary lower limb movements. We recruited 10 subjects for offline and online experiments. Multivariate empirical-mode decomposition was used to remove the artifacts, and the moment of onset of voluntary movement was labeled using lower limb electromyography signals during network training.ResultsThe RP features can be observed from multiple data overlays before the onset of voluntary lower limb movements, and these features have long latency periods. The offline experimental results showed that the average movement intention prediction accuracy was 95.23% ± 1.25% for the right leg and 91.21% ± 1.48% for the left leg, which showed good cross-temporal and cross-subject generalization while greatly reducing the training time. Online movement intention prediction can predict results about 483.9 ± 11.9 ms before movement onset with an average accuracy of 82.75%.ConclusionThe proposed method has a higher prediction accuracy with a lower training time, has good generalization performance for cross-temporal and cross-subject aspects, and is well-prioritized in terms of the temporal responses; these features are expected to lay the foundation for further investigations on exoskeleton robot control.

Abstract Bacteria can be utilized for cancer therapy owing to their preferential colonization at tumor sites. However, unmodified non‐pathogenic bacteria carry potential risks due to their non‐specific targeting effects, and their anti‐tumor activity is limited when used as monotherapy. In this study, a biohybrid‐engineered bacterial system comprising non‐pathogenic MG1655 bacteria modified with CDH17 nanobodies on their surface and conjugated with photosensitizer croconium (CR) molecules is developed. The resultant biohybrid bacteria can efficiently home to CDH17‐positive tumors, including gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers, and significantly suppress tumor growth upon irradiation. More importantly, biohybrid bacteria‐mediated photothermal therapy (PTT) induced abundant macrophage infiltration in a syngeneic murine colorectal model. Further, that the STING pathway is activated in tumor macrophages by the released bacterial nucleic acid after PTT is revealed, leading to the production of type I interferons. The addition of CD47 nanobody but not PD‐1 antibody to the PTT regimen can eradicate the tumors and extend survival. This results indicate that bacteria endowed with tumor‐specific selectivity and coupled with photothermal payloads can serve as an innovative strategy for low‐immunogenicity cancers. This strategy can potentially reprogram the tumor microenvironment by inducing macrophage infiltration and enhancing the efficacy of immunotherapy targeting macrophages.

Abstract Lead‐free halide perovskites possess excellent photoelectric properties, making them widely used in the photoelectric fields. Herein, lead‐free double perovskite crystals (PCs) doped with manganese (Cs2NaInCl6:Mn2+) are successfully prepared by the more energy‐efficient crystallization method. The crystals emit bright orange‐red light under the ultraviolet (UV) lamp, showing unique optical properties. They have the highest photoluminescence quantum yield of 42.91%. The white light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) are fabricated using these perovskite crystals, which show a color rendering index of 92 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) as high as 16.3%. Furtherly, perovskite‐modified fiber paper made of aramid chopped fibers (ACFs) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) exhibited fluorescent properties under different conditions. This paper combines fiber composite technology with PPS fiber filter bags, which are widely used in environmental protection, for the first time and demonstrates functional fiber filter bags with fluorescent characteristics. This filter bag provides an idea for the automatic detection of industrial filtration. Meanwhile, after being exposed to industrial waste gas for 60 h, the filter bag can maintain superior fluorescence performance. In this study, lead‐free double perovskites are synthesized using an efficient method for preparing high‐performance LEDs and high‐stability fluorescent fibers. Concurrently, the application of perovskites in environmental protection is expanded.

ABSTRACT Antimicrobial resistance has become a growing public health threat in recent years. Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the priority pathogens listed by the World Health Organization. Antimicrobial peptides are considered promising alternatives to antibiotics due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and low resistance. In this study, we investigated the antibacterial activity of antimicrobial peptide A20L against K. pneumoniae. In vitro antibacterial activity of A20L against K. pneumoniae was demonstrated by broth microdilution method. We confirmed the in vivo efficacy of A20L by Galleria mellonella infection model. In addition, we found that A20L also had certain antibiofilm activity by crystal violet staining. We also evaluated the safety and stability of A20L, and the results revealed that at a concentration of ≤128 µg/mL, A20L exhibited negligible toxicity to RAW264.7 cells and no substantial toxicity to G. mellonella. A20L was stable at different temperatures and with low concentration of serum [5% fetal bovine serum (FBS)]; however, Ca2+, Mg2+, and high serum concentrations reduced the antibacterial activity of A20L. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and membrane permeability tests revealed that A20L may exhibit antibacterial action by damaging bacterial cell membranes and increasing the permeability of outer membrane. Taken together, our results suggest that A20L has significant development potential as a therapeutic antibiotic alternative, which provides ideas for the treatment of K. pneumoniae infection.IMPORTANCEA20L showed antibacterial and anti-infective efficacy in vitro and in vivo against Klebsiella pneumoniae. It can have an antibacterial effect by disrupting the integrity of cell membranes. A20L displayed anti-biofilm and anti-inflammatory activity against carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae and certain application potential in vivo, which provides a new idea for the clinical treatment of biofilm-associated infections.

Summary: Background: Furmonertinib showed superior efficacy compared with gefitinib as first-line therapy in patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the FURLONG study. Here we present prespecified secondary endpoints of patient-reported outcomes (PRO). Methods: In this multicentre, double-blind, double-dummy, randomised phase 3 study, patients were 1:1 randomly assigned to receive furmonertinib 80 mg once daily or gefitinib 250 mg once daily. PROs assessed by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality-of-Life Questionnaire Core 30 and Quality-of-Life Questionnaire Lung Cancer 13 were analysed using a mixed model for repeated measures and time-to-event analyses. A difference in score of 10 points or more was deemed clinically relevant. Findings: Three hundred and fifty-seven patients (furmonertinib group, n = 178; gefitinib group, n = 179) received at least one dose of the study drug, all of whom completed at least one PRO assessment. Statistically significant difference of overall score changes from baseline favoured furmonertinib in physical functioning (between-group difference 2.14 [95% CI 0.25–4.04], p = 0.027), nausea/vomiting (−1.56 [95% CI −2.62 to −0.49], p = 0.004), appetite loss (−2.24 [95% CI −4.26 to −0.23], p = 0.029), diarrhoea (−3.36 [95% CI −5.19 to −1.54], p < 0.001), alopecia (−2.62 [95% CI −4.54 to −0.71], p = 0.007), and pain in other parts (−4.55 [95% CI −7.37 to −1.74], p = 0.002), but not reached clinical relevance. Time to deterioration in physical functioning (hazard ratio 0.63 [95% CI 0.42–0.94], p = 0.021), cognitive functioning (0.73 [95% CI 0.54–0.98], p = 0.034), nausea/vomiting (0.64 [95% CI 0.41–0.99], p = 0.042), appetite loss (0.63 [95% CI 0.43–0.92], p = 0.016), diarrhoea (0.63 [95% CI 0.46–0.85], p = 0.002), dyspnoea (0.72 [95% CI 0.53–0.98], p = 0.034), cough (0.67 [95% CI 0.44–1.00], p = 0.049), dysphagia (0.54 [95% CI 0.35–0.83], p = 0.004), and alopecia (0.62 [95% CI 0.42–0.90], p = 0.012) was longer with furmonertinib versus gefitinib. Interpretation: In patients with locally advanced or metastatic EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC, furmonertinib showed improved scores and delayed deterioration in several functioning and symptoms compared to gefitinib. Abstract Unspecific peroxygenases (UPOs) are glycosylated enzymes that provide an efficient method for oxyfunctionalizing a variety of substrates using only hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the oxygen donor. However, their poor heterologous expression has hindered their practical application. Here, a novel UPO from Marasmius fiardii PR910 (MfiUPO) was identified and heterologously expressed in Pichia pastoris. By employing a two-copy expression cassette, the protein titer reached 1.18 g L−1 in a 5 L bioreactor, marking the highest record. The glycoprotein rMfiUPO exhibited a smeared band in the 40 to 55 kDa range and demonstrated hydroxylation, epoxidation and alcohol oxidation. Moreover, the peroxidative activity was enhanced by 150% after exposure to 50% (v/v) acetone for 40 h. A semi-preparative production of 4-OH-β-ionone on a 100 mL scale resulted in a 54.2% isolated yield with 95% purity. With its high expression level, rMfiUPO is a promising candidate as an excellent parental template for enhancing desirable traits such as increased stability and selectivity through directed evolution, thereby meeting the necessary criteria for practical application. Abstract Background To investigate the biochemical changes in lumbar facet joint (LFJ) and intervertebral disc (IVD) with different degenerative grade by T2* mapping. Methods Sixty-eight patients with low back pain (study group) and 20 volunteers (control group) underwent standard MRI protocols and axial T2* mapping. Morphological evaluation of LFJ and IVD were performed on T2-weighted imaging according to Weishaupt and Pfirrmann grading system, respectively. Abstract An integrity monitoring of integrated navigation in the presence of slowly growing errors (SGEs) is proposed. SGEs with gradual growth over time are the worst category of latent failures. Tightly coupled inertial navigation system (INS)/Global Navigation Satellite System integration is presented by taking INS errors, bias and drift of receiver clock, baro‐altitude, pseudo‐range errors and ionospheric errors into consideration. Based on the RTCA performance standards DO‐229 and DO‐384, the simplified multi‐filters solution separation is employed for fault detection and calculation of corresponding outputs. For the fault exclusion part, the authors introduce a post pseudo‐range residual and measurement averaging method that is designed to quickly and effectively address SGEs and large measurement noises. Furthermore, the authors have designed a reconstruction logic for the filters that guarantees the continuity of the civil aviation system by considering the variation of visible satellites and historical information. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach satisfies the performance requirements for civil aviation of En‐route and is able to correctly exclude faults and respond quickly in the presence of different levels of SGEs and measurement noises.

Abstract Purpose There is controversy concerning the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and osteoporosis. This study is to examine the causal relationship between H. pylori infection and osteoporosis and to analyze the potential mechanism underlying the relationship. Methods The clinical data of H. pylori infection and bone mineral density from patients or physical examiner with good general condition in our hospital between September 2019 and September 2020 were retrospectively collected. The relationship between H. pylori infection and osteoporosis was compared and analyzed, using logistic regression to examine the potential mechanism underlying the association. To investigate the causal effects of H. pylori infection and osteoporosis, we conducted a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Results A total of 470 patients were positive for H. pylori, with a detection rate of 52.22%. It was found that age, SBP, FPG, DBP, ALB, LDL-C, hs-CRP, and OC were positively correlated with osteoporosis, while negative correlations were observed with BMI, LYM, ALB, TP, TG, HDL-C, SCr, UA, and VitD. After stratified analysis of sex and age, it was found that there was a significant correlation between H. pylori infection and osteoporosis. The levels of SBP, ALP, FPG, LDL-C, hs-CRP, and OC in both H. pylori-positive group and osteoporosis group were higher than those in the H. pylori-negative group while the levels of BMI, ALB, TP, HDL-C, SCr, UA, and VitD in the positive group were significantly lower than those in the negative group. Logistic regression analyses with gender and age showed that ALB, FPG, HDL-C, and VitD were common risk factors for osteoporosis and H. pylori infection. In the MR analysis, the IVW results found a positive effect of H. pylori infection on osteoporosis (OR = 1.0017, 95% CI: 1.0002–1.0033, P = 0.0217). Regarding the reverse direction analysis, there was insufficient evidence to prove the causal effects of osteoporosis on H. pylori infection. Conclusion Our study provides evidence for causal effects of H. pylori infection on osteoporosis. H. pylori may affect osteoporosis through serum albumin, high-density lipoprotein, fasting blood glucose and vitamin D.

Abstract In this research, a modeling approach of rainfall generator coupled with high resolution rainfall products were proposed to generate designed rainfall events under multiple spatial and temporal distributions, which was then employed to analyze the impacts of spatial and temporal rainfall heterogeneities on peak runoff for watersheds. Three scenarios were developed under multiple degrees of impermeable underlying surface areas within an urban watershed in south China. Detailed runoff processes were analyzed through the adoption of a distributed hydrological model (GSSHA). A covariance analysis method combined with rainfall spatio‐temporal heterogeneity characteristic were used to quantify heterogeneity effects on peak runoff. Results indicated that coupling short period (2008–2016) remotely rainfall data and RainyDay results could successfully reproduce designed rainfall events, spatio‐temporal heterogeneity of rainfall contributed significantly to the peak runoff, which was greater than those by rainfall duration and capacity, and the increase in impermeable underlying surface enhanced the complexities of the effects. Over each rainfall duration with increasing rainfall return period, the indicator of rainfall peak coefficient (RWD) would decrease and then increase. Regarding the total rainfall center (tg), 25 mm/h threshold rainfall spatial coverage (A25) decreased with increasing imperviousness, 1‐h maximum rainfall (Rmax) surged with increasing imperviousness at rainfall duration of 2 and 24 h. Innovations of this research lied in: combination of a rainfall generator model based on a stochastic storm transposition technique and remote‐sensing rainfall data to generate designed rainfall events, a rainfall spatial and temporal heterogeneities index system was developed to reveal how the changing characteristics of rainfall distribution and the impacts on peak runoff, and in‐depth analysis of the impacts on runoff peak under multiple urban development scenarios for increasing capability in flood control/prevention.

Abstract The role of ATP6AP1 in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains elusive despite its observed upregulation in pan-cancer. Therefore, the current study aimed to assess the clinical significance of ATP6AP1 and its relationship with the immune infiltration in CRC. Transcriptome data of CRC were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and analyzed using the combination of R packages and tumor-related databases, including TIMER2, TISIDB, cBioPortal, and MethSurv. The tissue arrays and immunohistochemical staining were performed to verify the expression and clinical characteristics of ATP6AP1. The results revealed that ATP6AP1 expression was significantly elevated in CRC and associated with poor clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrated ATP6AP1 expression was correlated with the infiltration of immune cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts in the microenvironment of CRC. Moreover, ATP6AP1 was found to be linked to various immune checkpoints and chemokines, with enrichment of cytoplasmic vesicle lumen, endopeptidase regulator activity, and endopeptidase inhibitor activity observed in the high ATP6AP1 expressional group. In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that ATP6AP1 upregulation may serve as a biomarker for poor diagnosis in CRC and offer a potential target for immunotherapy in CRC.

Abstract To investigate the prevalence, types, and risk factors of functional gastrointestinal diseases (FGIDs) in Hainan Province, China, in order to provide insights for future prevention and treatment strategies. A questionnaire survey was conducted from July 2022 to May 2023, using stratified sampling to sample local residents in five cities (20 townships) in Hainan Province. Out of 2057 local residents surveyed, 659 individuals (32.0%) reported experiencing at least one FGID. The most prevalent FGIDs were functional dyspepsia (FD) (10.7%), functional constipation (FC) (9.3%), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) (6.8%), functional bloating (2.2%), belching disorder (2.2%), functional diarrhea (FDr) (1.5%), functional heartburn (1.5%), and fecal incontinence (0.98%). Abstract Background This study aimed to assess the clinical application of the Artery Occlusion Image Score (AOIS), a new metric based on computed tomographic angiography (CTA) that reflects the severity of occlusive changes in the main intracranial arteries. Materials and Methods Patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) were divided into three groups: anterior circulation infarcts (ACI group), posterior circulation infarcts (PCI group), and both anterior and posterior circulation infarcts (ACI + PCI group). The sensitivity and specificity of AOIS were evaluated using the Basilar Artery on Computed Tomography Angiography (BATMAN) score, the Clot Burden Score (CBS), and the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) as comparators through receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results The final analysis included 439 consecutive patients. In the ACI group, AOIS demonstrated high sensitivity (86.3%) and specificity (85.0%) and outperformed CBS in predicting patient prognosis. In the PCI group, AOIS also showed high sensitivity (88.9%) and specificity (90.0%) and outperformed BATMAN in predicting patient prognosis. Abstract Only few studies have investigated the prevalence of feline coronavirus (FCoV) infection in domestic cats in Fujian, China. This is the first study to report the prevalence rate of FCoV infection in domestic cats in Fujian, China, and to analyse the epidemiological characteristics of FCoV infection in the region. A total of 112 cat faecal samples were collected from animal hospitals and catteries in the Fujian Province. RNA was extracted from faecal material for reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The prevalence rate of FCoV infection was determined, and its epidemiological risk factors were analysed. The overall prevalence of FCoV infection in the cats, was 67.9%. We did not observe a significant association between the age, sex, or breed of the cats included in the study and the prevalence rate of the viral infection. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the four strains from Fujian were all type I FCoV. This is the first study to analyse the prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of FCoV infection in domestic cats in Fujian, China, using faecal samples. The results of this study provide preliminary data regarding the prevalence of FCoV infection in the Fujian Province for epidemiological studies on FCoV in China and worldwide. Future studies should perform systematic and comprehensive epidemiological investigations to determine the prevalence of FCoV infection in the region.

The distribution warehouse in the field of trade express is still dominated by manual operation, which has disadvantages in terms of accuracy, timeliness and economy. Choosing intelligent logistics equipment that can meet different operation links and reasonably setting the number of logistics equipment will help to improve the warehouse operation efficiency and reduce the warehouse operation cost. This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization method to solve this problem. We build a collaborative optimization model of multi-type logistics equipment selection and quantity decision to meet the whole process of intelligent distribution warehouse. The model takes the total equipment cost, return on investment and warehouse operation efficiency as the optimization objectives, and considers the constraints of workload satisfaction, equipment utilization, area occupation and selection rules. We use genetic algorithm combined with penalty function to solve the model. The example shows that this method can meet the requirements of intelligent warehouse operation, and realize the economic selection and quantity decision of logistics equipment for loading and unloading, storage, sorting, palletizing and film winding. And furthermore, it is concluded that the shelf access operation can be completed by both loading and unloading equipment, and the total cost is better.

Reliable classification results are crucial for guiding agricultural production, forecasting crop yield, and ensuring food security. Generating reliable classification results is relatively simple in regions with sufficient labeled samples, but regions with limited labeled samples remain a significant challenge. In this study, we propose two new solutions that leverage the feature representation capabilities of deep learning and the sample reuse potential of transfer learning to solve the limited label problem. Specifically, we develop a Variable-dimensional Symmetric Network with Position Encoding (VPSNet) to improve the efficiency of labeled sample utilization. Additionally, we introduce a transfer strategy based on the Inter-Regional Discrepancies in Crop Time Series (IRDCTS) to expand the labeled sample reuse region. We evaluated the proposed model in three regions with limited labels between 2017 and 2018. Experimental results show that our model has superior discriminative feature extraction capabilities compared to other existing models. The feasibility of the proposed transfer strategy is tested in three pair regions, showing that IRDCTS can enhance the model adaptability by reducing inter-domain discrepancies. This study provides a comprehensive solution to the classification problem of the limited labeled samples, involving both the development of classification models and the implementation of transfer strategies.

BackgroundStudies have shown that gut dysbiosis contributes to the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Identifying specific gut microbiota dysbiosis may provide insight into the pathogenesis of T2DM.PurposeThis study investigated the causal relationship between gut microbiota and T2DM using meta-analysis and Mendelian randomization (MR).MethodsIn the first part, we searched for literature on gut microbiota and T2DM, and conducted a meta-analysis. We observed differences in glycosylated hemoglobin and fasting blood glucose levels in both groups. Second, we obtained GWAS data from genome-wide association study database 19 (GWAS). We used two-sample MR analysis to verify the forward and reverse causal associations between gut microbiota and T2DM. Additionally, we selected the European GWAS data from the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) as a validation set for external validation of the MR analysis. In the third part, we aimed to clarify which gut microbiota contribute to the degree of causal association between group disorders and T2DM through multivariate MR analysis and Bayesian model averaging (MR-BMA).Results1. According to the meta-analysis results, the glycated hemoglobin concentration in the gut probiotic intervention group was significantly lower than in the control group. Following treatment, fasting blood glucose levels in the intervention group were significantly lower than those in the control group. 2. The results of two samples MR analysis revealed that there were causal relationships between six gut microbiota and T2DM. Genus Haemophilus and order Pasteurellaceae were negatively correlated with T2DM. Genus Actinomycetes, class Melanobacteria and genus Lactobacillus were positively correlated. Reverse MR analysis demonstrated that T2DM and gut microbiota did not have any reverse causal relationship. The external validation data set showed a causal relationship between gut microbiota and T2DM. 3. Multivariate MR analysis and MR-BMA results showed that the independent genus Haemophilus collection had the largest PP.ConclusionOur research results suggest that gut microbiota is closely related to T2DM pathogenesis. The results of further MR research and an analysis of the prediction model indicate that a variety of gut microbiota disorders, including genus Haemophilus, are causally related to the development of T2DM. ABSTRACT: This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin E (VE) on laying performance, VE deposition, antioxidant capacity, immunity, follicle development, estrogen secretion, ovary metabolome, and cecal microbiota of laying hens. One hundred and twenty XinYang Black-Feathered laying hens (70 wk old) were randomly assigned to 2 groups (6 replicates of 20 birds), and fed a basal diet (containing 20 mg/kg VE, control (CON) group) and a basal diet supplemented with 20 mg/kg VE (VE group). The experiment lasted for 10 wk. Results showed that VE supplementation increased laying performance, antioxidant capacity, and immunity, as evidenced by increased (P < 0.05) performance (laying rate), antioxidant (glutathione peroxidase, total superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity, and catalase) and immune (immunoglobulins) parameters, and decreased (P < 0.05) feed/egg ratio and malondialdehyde. Meanwhile, VE group had higher (P < 0.05) pregrade follicles, ovary index and serum estrogen levels than CON group. 16S rRNA sequencing showed that VE supplementation altered the cecal microbiota composition by increasing Bacteroides, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Prevotellaceae_UCG-001 and Megamonas abundances and reducing Christensenellaceae_R-7_group abundance (at genus level), which are mainly associated with the production of short-chain fatty acids. Metabolomic profiling of the ovary revealed that the major metabolites altered by VE supplementation were mainly related to follicle development, estrogen secretion, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, phototransduction, bile acid synthesis, and nutrient transport. Furthermore, changes in cecal microbiota (at genus level) and ovary metabolites were highly correlated with laying performance, antioxidant, and immune parameters. In summary, VE contributed to the laying performance of aged laying hens by enhancing antioxidant, immune, and ovarian functions, promoting follicle development and estrogen secretion, and regulating gut microbiota and ovary metabolites. These findings will provide a new perspective on the mechanisms of egg production in aged poultry ovaries.

IntroductionAvian leukosis, a viral disease affecting birds such as chickens, presents significant challenges in poultry farming due to tumor formation, decreased egg production, and increased mortality. Despite the absence of a commercial vaccine, avian leukosis virus (ALV) infections have been extensively documented, resulting in substantial economic losses in the poultry industry. This study aimed to develop alginate-chitosan composite microspheres loaded with ALV-J Gp85 protein (referred to as aCHP-gp85) as a potential vaccine candidate.MethodsSodium alginate and chitosan were utilized as encapsulating materials, with the ALV-J Gp85 protein serving as the active ingredient. The study involved 45 specific pathogen-free (SPF) chickens to evaluate the immunological effectiveness of aCHP-gp85 compared to a traditional Freund adjuvant-gp85 vaccine (Freund-gp85). Two rounds of vaccination were administered, and antibody levels, mRNA expression of immune markers, splenic lymphocyte proliferation, and immune response were assessed. An animal challenge experiment was conducted to evaluate the vaccine’s efficacy in reducing ALV-J virus presence and improving clinical conditions.ResultsThe results demonstrated that aCHP-gp85 induced a significant and sustained increase in antibody levels compared to Freund-gp85, with the elevated response lasting for 84 days. Furthermore, aCHP-gp85 significantly upregulated mRNA expression levels of key immune markers, notably TNF-α and IFN-γ. The application of ALV-J Gp85 protein within the aCHP-gp85 group led to a significant increase in splenic lymphocyte proliferation and immune response. In the animal challenge experiment, aCHP-gp85 effectively reduced ALV-J virus presence and improved clinical conditions compared to other groups, with no significant pathological changes observed.DiscussionThe findings suggest that aCHP-gp85 elicits a strong and prolonged immune response compared to Freund-gp85, indicating its potential as an innovative ALV-J vaccine candidate. These results provide valuable insights for addressing avian leukosis in the poultry industry, both academically and practically.

Objective To explore the prevalence of type I and type II Helicobacter pylori infection and investigate risk factors in a population from Hainan Province in China. Methods Data came from a large, cross-sectional study conducted from August 2022 to April 2023 involving five cities of Hainan. Subjects with confirmed 14C-urea breath test (UBT) and positive serological assay were included. All subjects had a gastroscopy. According to presence or absence of CagA/VacA proteins, subjects were classified as either type I (present) or type II strains (absent). Gastroscopic findings and several socio-demographic factors were examined for correlation with antibody serotyping. Results In total, 410 subjects were investigated for H. pylori strain types. The overall prevalence of the highly virulent, type I H. pylori strain was 79% (324/410) and type II strain was 21% (86/410). There was a strong association between type I strain and peptic ulcer disease. Of several sociodemographic factors investigated, only smoking and data over baseline (DOB) values showed significant differences between type 1 and type II strains. Logistic regression analysis showed a lower risk of type I H. pylori infection in smokers compared with non-smokers, and a higher risk of H. pylori type I infection in subjects with medium and high data over baseline (DOB) values compared with subjects who had low DOB values. Conclusion Highly virulent, type I H. pylori infections predominate in Hainan and the co-positivity of CagA and VacA antibodies are related to type I H. pylori infection. We found that Type I H. pylori was closely associated with peptic ulcer disease and the DOB values were generally high.

A passively mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser employing ethylene glycol as a saturable absorber (SA) has been proposed and experimentally validated. The ethylene glycol-SA is fabricated by filling the space between the end facets of two optical patch cords inserted into a cannula with ethylene glycol. Utilizing such an SA with a modulation depth of 9.6 %, stable mode-locking operation are manifested in the laser cavity, including the production of bright pulse and bright-dark pulse pair. The generated bright pulse has a center wavelength at 1562.28 nm, a 3 dB bandwidth of 0.21 nm, a repetition frequency of 20.24 MHz, and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 57 dB. Through precisely manipulating the polarization state and the pump power in the laser cavity, the bright-dark pulse pairs can be successfully attained at the same repetition frequency. This is the first demonstration of a passively mode-locked fiber laser utilizing ethylene glycol as the saturable absorber. Due to their superior optical absorption characteristics, low cost, simplicity in fabrication and non-volatile nature, ethylene glycol-SAs have enormous potential in the field of nonlinear optics and ultrafast photonics.

IntroductionAntibiotic misuse and overuse have led to the emergence of carbapenem-resistant bacteria. The global spread of resistance to the novel antibiotic combination ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) is becoming a severe problem. Antimicrobial peptide PAM-1 offers a novel approach for treating infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This study explores its antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities and mechanisms against CZA-resistant Escherichia. Coli (E. coli), evaluating its stability and biosafety as well.MethodsThe broth microdilution method, growth curve analysis, crystal violet staining, scanning electron microscopy, and propidium iodide staining/N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine uptake experiments were performed to explore the antibacterial action and potential mechanism of PAM-1 against CZA-resistant E. coli. The biosafety in diverse environments of PAM-1 was evaluated by red blood cell hemolysis, and cytotoxicity tests. Its stability was further assessed under different temperatures, serum concentrations, and ionic conditions using the broth microdilution method to determine its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Galleria mellonella infection model and RT-qPCR were used to investigate the in vivo antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.Results and discussionIn vitro antibacterial experiments demonstrated that the MICs of PAM-1 ranged from 2 to 8 μg/mL, with its effectiveness sustained for a duration of 24 h. PAM-1 exhibited significant antibiofilm activities against CZA-resistant E. coli (p 50%)for in vivo treatment. Lastly, RT-qPCR revealed that PAM-1 downregulates the expression of inflammatory cytokines (p < 0.05). Overall, our study findings highlight the potential of PAM-1 as a therapeutic agent for CZA-resistant E. coli infections, offering new avenues for research and alternative antimicrobial therapy strategies.

Abstract Directly repairing end‐of‐life lithium‐ion battery cathodes poses significant challenges due to the diverse compositions of the wastes. Here, we propose a water‐facilitated targeted repair strategy applicable to various end‐of‐life batches and cathodes. The process involves initiating structural repair and reconstructing particle morphology in degraded LiMn2O4 (LMO) through an additional thermal drive post‐ambient water remanganization, achieving elemental repair. Compared to solid‐phase repair, the resulting LMO material exhibits superior electrochemical and kinetic characteristics. The theoretical analysis highlights the impact of Mn defects on the structural stability and electron transfer rate of degraded materials. The propensity of Mn ions to diffuse within the Mn layer, specifically occupying the Mn 16d site instead of the Li 8a site, theoretically supports the feasibility of ambient water remanganization. Moreover, this method proves effective in the relithiation of degraded layered cathode materials, yielding single crystals. By combining low energy consumption, environmental friendliness, and recyclability, our study proposes a sustainable approach to utilizing spent batteries. This strategy holds the potential to enable the industrial direct repair of deteriorated cathode materials.

The caudal neurosecretory system (CNSS) of teleost is intricately linked to reproduction. This study sought to explore the association between the CNSS and the reproductive cycle of Pampus argenteus. Utilizing microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, we observed the morphological alterations within the CNSS. Furthermore, we quantified the levels of urotensin-I (U-I), urotensin-II (U-II), cortisol, and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) throughout the reproductive process. Findings revealed that Dahlgren cells, distributed along the spinal cord adjacent to the terminal 6 vertebrae of the silver pomfret’s tail, were primarily concentrated within the final 3 vertebrae. The neurohypophysis was characterized by an elongated oval form when viewed laterally and an almost spherical configuration in ventral perspective. Post-breeding season, the average diameters of Type I and Type II Dahlgren cells decreased by 21.8% and 15.44%, respectively (P < 0.05), accompanied by a reduction in neurosecretory granules to merely 60% of their initial pre-reproductive state (P < 0.05). Variations in the serum and gonadal concentrations of U-I, U-II, cortisol, and CRH indicated a significant correlation with gonadal maturation. In summary, the CNSS plays a crucial role in gonadal development, directly or indirectly influencing and modulating the reproductive activities of P. argenteus.

Zooplankton grazers, like copepods, can feed on toxic microalgae and live normally. We hypothesize that gut microbial communities (GMCs) may contribute to the detoxification of the host by changing their compositions and recruiting more beneficial bacteria. Here, we measured the physiological responses of two copepod species (Acartia sp. and Paracalanus sp.) fed with toxic (Alexandrium tamarense) and non-toxic (Alexandrium andersonii) dinoflagellates, respectively. Both copepods maintained consistently high survival rates but slightly reduced ingestion rates when feeding upon the toxic dinoflagellate (when compared to the non-toxic one), suggesting a compensatory mechanism. The compositional variation of copepod GMCs, at the amplicon sequence variant (ASV) level, was mostly significantly different among copepod host species (R = 0.83, by ANOSIM test), while diet type played minor but significant roles. Under the toxic diet, Acartia sp. enriched only five ASVs while Paracalanus sp. recruited a wide range of taxa (38 ASVs) mostly belonging to Alphaproteobacteria (e.g., Rhodobacteraceae) and Gammaproteobacteria (e.g., Alteromonadaceae). In contrast, when clustering GMCs by predicted functions, diet type was the key regulating factor, suggesting the functional convergence of copepod GMCs in response to algal toxins. This can be explained by the fact that most of the enriched bacteria under the toxic diet have similar functions on detoxification and maintaining the host homeostasis. This study deepens our understanding of the roles of GMC in the detoxification and adaptation mechanisms of copepods during harmful algal blooms.
