Abstract Background Pilomatricoma (PM) is a cutaneous benign neoplasm derived from the hair matrix. It clinically presents as a solitary and firm nodule overlying normal epidermis and is usually not easy to be noticed at early stage. Nevertheless, when special bullous lesion occurs in a short time or even ulcerates, preoperative diagnosis by a dermatologist is often challenging especially when the pediatric patients refuse biopsy. Case presentation We present six bullous PM cases and particularly conduct correlation analysis on the dermotoscopy and histopathology detection data. The basic information, medical history, symptoms and lesion morphology results of the patients were also provided. We found that the incidence of bullous PM was higher in females than in males, and most patients were adolescents and the predilection location seem to be consistent in the vaccine injection site. The dermatoscopic features of bullous PM reported were luminous yellow structure below, with gray-blue homogeneous areas and branched capillary. The histological features were consistent with PM, and evident epidermis bullae were above the tumor with extraordinary dilation of lymphangion in the upper dermis. The patients described in this study were Chinese patients in Han population included 4 females and 2 males, coincidentally, they are almost teen-age, respectively are 5,11,17,19,21,22 year-old. Conclusions This study reported and analyzed the dermotoscopy and clinical characteristics of bullous PM, dermotoscopy may guide as a rapid and reliable technique in bullous PM diagnosis.

Landslides are destructive geohazards to people and infrastructure, resulting in hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars of damage every year. Therefore, mapping the rate of deformation of such geohazards and understanding their mechanics is of paramount importance to mitigate the resulting impacts and properly manage the associated risks. In this paper, the main outcomes relevant to the joint European Space Agency (ESA) and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) Dragon-5 initiative cooperation project ID 59,339 “Earth observation for seismic hazard assessment and landslide early warning system” are reported. The primary goals of the project are to further develop advanced SAR/InSAR and optical techniques to investigate seismic hazards and risks, detect potential landslides in wide regions, and demonstrate EO-based landslide early warning system over selected landslides. This work only focuses on the landslide hazard content of the project, and thus, in order to achieve these objectives, the following tasks were developed up to now: a) a procedure for phase unwrapping errors and tropospheric delay correction; b) an improvement of a cross-platform SAR offset tracking method for the retrieval of long-term ground displacements; c) the application of polarimetric SAR interferometry (PolInSAR) to increase the number and quality of monitoring points in landslide-prone areas; d) the semiautomatic mapping and preliminary classification of active displacement areas on wide regions; e) the modeling and identification of landslides in order to identify triggering factors or predict future displacements; and f) the application of an InSAR-based landslide early warning system on a selected site. The achieved results, which mainly focus on specific sensitive regions, provide essential assets for planning present and future scientific activities devoted to identifying, mapping, characterizing, monitoring and predicting landslides, as well as for the implementation of early warning systems.

Objective The experiment aimed to determine the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) in 10 brown rice samples fed to pigs, and to construct predictive models for SID of CP and AA based on the physical characteristics and chemical composition of brown rice. Methods Twenty-two cannulated pigs (initial body weight: 42.0±1.2 kg) were assigned to a replicated 11×3 incomplete Latin square design, including an N-free diet and 10 brown rice diets. Each period included 5 d adaptation and 2 d ileal digesta collection. Chromic oxide was added at 0.3% to all the diets as an indigestible marker for calculating the ileal CP and AA digestibility. Results The coefficients of variation of all detected indices for physical characteristics and chemical composition, except for bulk weight, dry matter (DM) and gross energy, in 10 brown rice samples were greater than 10%. The SID of CP, lysine (Lys), methionine, threonine (Thr), and tryptophan (Trp) in brown rice was 77.2% (62.6% to 85.5%), 87.5% (80.3% to 94.3%), 89.2% (78.9% to 98.9%), 55.4% (46.1% to 67.6%) and 92.5% (86.3% to 96.3%), respectively. The best prediction equations for the SID of CP, Lys, Thr, and Trp were as following, SIDCP = −664.181+8.484×DM (R2 = 0.40), SIDLys = 53.126+6.031×ether extract (EE)+0.893×thousand-kernel volume (R2 = 0.66), SIDThr = 39.916+7.843×EE (R2 = 0.41), and SIDTrp = −361.588+4.891×DM+0.387×total starch (R2 = 0.85). Conclusion Overall, a great variation exists among 10 sources of brown rice, and the thousand-grain volume, DM, EE, and total starch can be used as the key predictors for SID of CP and AA.

Abstract Human activities have increased with urbanisation in the Erhai Lake Basin, considerably impacting its eco-environmental quality (EEQ). This study aims to reveal the evolution and driving forces of the EEQ using water benefit–based ecological index (WBEI) in response to human activities and policy variations in the Erhai Lake Basin from 1990 to 2020. Results show that (1) the EEQ exhibited a pattern of initial degradation, subsequent improvement, further degradation and a rebound from 1990 to 2020, and the areas with poor and fair EEQ levels mainly concentrated around the Erhai Lake Basin with a high level of urbanisation and relatively flat terrain; (2) the EEQ levels were not optimistic in 1990, 1995 and 2015, and areas with poor and fair EEQ levels accounted for 43.41%, 47.01% and 40.05% of the total area, respectively; and (3) an overall improvement in the EEQ was observed in 1995–2000, 2000–2005, 2005–2009 and 2015–2020, and the improvement was most significant in 1995–2000, covering an area of 823.95 km2 and accounting for 31.79% of the total area. Results also confirmed that the EEQ changes in the Erhai Lake Basin were primarily influenced by human activities and policy variations. Moreover, these results can provide a scientific basis for the formulation and planning of sustainable development policy in the Erhai Lake Basin.

Abstract Cytospora canker has become a devastating disease of apple species worldwide, and in severe cases, it may cause dieback of entire trees. The aim of this study was to characterize the diversity of cultivable bacteria from the wild apple microbiota and to determine their antifungal ability against the canker-causing pathogenic fungi Cytospora mali and C. parasitica. Five bacterial strains belonging to the species Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, B. atrophaeus, B. methylotrophicus, B. mojavensis, and Pseudomonas synxantha showed strong antagonistic effects against pathogenic fungi. Therefore, since the abovementioned Bacillus species produce known antifungal compounds, we characterized the antifungal compounds produced by Ps. synxantha. Bacteria grown on nutritional liquid medium were dehydrated, and the active compound from the crude extract was isolated and analysed via a range of chromatographic processes. High-performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses revealed a bioactive antifungal compound, phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) demonstrated that PCA inhibited mycelial growth, with a MIC of 10 mg mL−1. The results suggested that PCA could be used as a potential compound to control C. mali and C. malicola, and it is a potential alternative for postharvest control of canker disease.

Apples are one of the most important economic crops worldwide. Because of global warming and an aggravation of environmental, abnormally high temperatures occur frequently in fruit-growing season and seriously affect normal fruit growth and reduce fruit quality and yield. We took five-year-old ‘Ruixue’ (Qinfu 1 × Pink Lady; CNA20151469.1) fruits as test materials, and the ambient temperature during fruit development was monitored. The results showed that during the fruit-growing season, especially during the rapid growth stage (July to August), the maximum daily temperature exceeded 30 °C and lasted for more than 40 days. To determine the effects of high temperature stress on the apple fruit resistance, we treated expanding, veraison, and maturity-period fruits at different temperatures. It was found that the fruits of the expanding period showed strong resistance to high temperature stress, whereas during veraison and maturity, fruit resistance to high temperature stress decreased, and the fruit peel browning phenotype appeared. Meanwhile, the content of malonaldehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and superoxide anion (O2.-) in the peel gradually increased with increasing temperature. The content of total phenols, flavanol, and flavonoids in the peel decreased substantially at 45 °C. Moreover, it was found that polyphenol oxidase gene (MdPPO1) was most sensitive to high temperature stress in apple. Furthermore, transient and stable MdPPO1 overexpression significantly promoted peel browning. The transgenic materials were more sensitive to high temperatures, and browning was more severe compared to non-genetically modified organism (WT). Stable MdPPO1 knockout calli obtained via clustered regularly interspersed short palindromic repeats (CRISPR/Cas9) gene knockout technology reduced the browning phenotype, and the resultant fruits were not sensitive to the effects of high temperature stress. Thus, MdPPO1 expression may be a key factor of high temperature–related changes observed in the browning phenotype that provides a scientific theoretical basis for the selection of high temperature–resistant varieties and apple cultivation and management in the future.

In recent decades, the Mountain Excavation and City Construction (MECC) activities have become the main way of acquiring land for construction in densely populated cities. In China, for example, Lanzhou City is one of the typical cities for MECC, which has significantly changed the landscape and resulted in the surface deformation. To monitor accurately surface deformation, the height changes cannot be ignored, as it changes from meters to more than 70 m due to the MECC. In this study, a new time-series Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) algorithm is proposed to stepwise estimate the ground height changes and deformation, where the onset of height changes is firstly detected automatically for each pixel. Then height changes and deformation are estimated with different SAR datasets for different pixels. Experimental test on Lanzhou city shows that the ground height changes vary between 70 m and −80 m from October 2014 to May 2022, and the correlation between the multi-track results is over 0.89. Meanwhile, the correlation with the ICESat-2 height changes results reaches 0.94. In addition, two-dimensional (2D) deformation is recovered by fusing ascending and descending deformation, where subsidence with slight rebound phenomena is revealed at the center of the landfill area. Finally, finite difference model (FDM) is employed to simulate the land filling process, which can well explain the 2D surface deformation.

Acute lung injury is a common complication of sepsis and characterized by a high mortality rate during hospitalization. Proanthocyanidin, which are abundant compounds found in various plants, have shown promising effects in preventing chronic diseases, and their oligomers have attracted attention for their high bioavailability and strong antioxidant activity. In recent years, there have been suggestions that oligomeric proanthocyanidin may possess lung-protective properties, however, the specific mechanisms involved have not been fully elucidated. This study reveals that the therapeutic efficacy of oligomeric proanthocyanidin in mitigating lung injury during sepsis, achieved through the reduction of neutrophil extracellular traps accumulation and the attenuation of inflammation, can be attributed to the capacity to safeguard the integrity of the intestinal mucus layer and the intestinal barrier. This protective action results in a decrease in endotoxin entry into the bloodstream and bacterial translocation, both of which can trigger neutrophil extracellular traps causing further lung injury.

ABSTRACT The immune response induced by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is closely related to changes in the composition and function of gastrointestinal microorganisms. However, the specific mechanism remains unknown and the pulmonary-intestinal axis deserves further study. In this study, the mRNA levels of ROR-γt and Foxp3 in the lung and intestine increased first and then decreased. IL-17 and IL-22 reached the maximum on the third day after infection in the lung, and on the second day after infection in the small intestine and colon, respectively. RegⅢγ in intestinal tissue reached the maximum on the third day after RSV infection. Moreover, the genus enriched in the RSV group was Aggregatibacter, and Proteus was reduced. RSV infection not only causes Th17/Treg cell imbalance in the lungs of mice but also leads to the release of excessive IL-22 from the lungs through blood circulation which binds to IL-22 receptors on the intestinal surface, inducing RegⅢγ overexpression, impaired intestinal Th17/Treg development, and altered gut microbiota composition. Our research reveals a significant link between the pulmonary and intestinal axis after RSV infection.IMPORTANCERSV is the most common pathogen causing acute lower respiratory tract infections in infants and young children, but the complex interactions between the immune system and gut microbiota induced by RSV infection still requires further research. In this study, it was suggested that RSV infection in 7-day-old BALB/c suckling mice caused lung inflammation and disruption of Th17/Treg cells development, and altered the composition of gut microbiota through IL-22 induced overexpression of RegⅢγ, leading to intestinal immune injury and disruption of gut microbiota. This research reveals that IL-22 may be the link between the lung and gut. This study may provide a new insight into the intestinal symptoms caused by RSV and other respiratory viruses and the connection between the lung and gut axis, as well as new therapeutic ideas for the treatment of RSV-infected children.

Rapid urbanization is one of the major causes of the degradation of ecosystem services (ESs), which poses serious threats to the ecological security of cities. Assessing ESs and their trade-offs and synergies is crucial for enhancing integrated ESs and promoting coordinated economic-social-ecological development in highly urbanized regions. This study used a combined GeoSOS-FLUS-InVEST model to simulate the trends and spatial distribution of five essential ESs (carbon sequestration, habitat quality, water conservation, soil retention and food supply) and explored their trade-offs and synergies under three future scenarios: natural development scenario, policy optimization scenario, and sustainable development scenario. Results showed that: (1) Carbon sequestration, habitat quality, water conservation, and soil retention services exhibit a declining trend from land to sea, while food supply service is closely linked to land use types; (2) The integrated ESs of all three future scenarios decreased compared to 2020. Among them, the integrated ESs under the sustainable development scenario surpassed those of the policy optimization scenario and the natural development scenario; (3) In Xiamen, the ESs were predominantly characterized by synergy, with trade-off relationship occurring sporadically in certain parts of the city. The sustainable development scenario exhibits the highest number of synergy units and the fewest trade-off units. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into managing the inherent contradictions between ecological conservation and human development in other rapidly urbanizing regions with similar challenges.

BackgroundPerivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) dysfunction impairs vascular homeostasis. Impaired inflammation and bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP4) signaling are involved in thoracic PVAT dysfunction by regulating adipokine secretion and adipocyte phenotype transformation. We investigated whether aerobic exercise training could ameliorate high-fat diet (HFD)-induced PVAT dysfunction via improved inflammatory response and BMP4-mediated signaling pathways.MethodsSprague-Dawley rats (n = 24) were divided into three groups, namely control, high-fat diet (HFD), and HFD plus exercise (HEx). After a 6-week intervention, PVAT functional efficiency and changes in inflammatory biomarkers (circulating concentrations in blood and mRNA expressions in thoracic PVAT) were assessed.ResultsChronic HFD feeding caused obesity and dyslipidemia in rats. HFD decreased the relaxation response of PVAT-containing vascular rings and impaired PVAT-regulated vasodilatation. However, exercise training effectively reversed these diet-induced pathological changes to PVAT. This was accompanied by significantly (p < 0.05) restoring the morphological structure and the decreased lipid droplet size in PVAT. Furthermore, HFD-induced impaired inflammatory response (both in circulation and PVAT) was notably ameliorated by exercise training (p < 0.05). Specifically, exercise training substantially reversed HFD-induced WAT-like characteristics to BAT-like characteristics as evidenced by increased UCP1 and decreased FABP4 protein levels in PVAT against HFD. Exercise training promoted transcriptional activation of BMP4 and associated signaling molecules (p38/MAPK, ATF2, PGC1α, and Smad5) that are involved in browning of adipose tissue. In conjunction with gene expressions, exercise training increased BMP4 protein content and activated downstream cascades, represented by upregulated p38/MAPK and PGC1α proteins in PVAT.ConclusionRegular exercise training can reverse HFD-induced obesity, dyslipidemia, and thoracic PVAT dysfunction in rats. The browning of adipose tissue through exercise appears to be modulated through improved inflammatory response and/or BMP4-mediated signaling cascades in obese rats.

The accumulation of potentially toxic elements in soil poses significant risks to ecosystems and human well-being due to their inherent toxicity, widespread presence, and persistence. The Kangdian metallogenic province, famous for its iron-copper deposits, faces soil pollution challenges due to various potentially toxic elements. This study explored a comprehensive approach that combinescombines the spatial prediction by the two-point machine learning method and ecological-health risk assessment to quantitatively assess the comprehensive potential ecological risk index (PERI), the total hazard index (THI) and the total carcinogenic risk (TCR). The proportions of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and arsenic (As) concentrations exceeding the risk screening values (RSVs) were 15.03%, 5.1%, 3.72%, 1.24%, 1.1%, and 0.13%, respectively, across the 725 collected samples. Spatial prediction revealed elevated levels of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, mercury (Hg), and Mn near the mining sites. Potentially toxic elements exert a slight impact on soil, some regions exhibit moderate to significant ecological risk, particularly in the southwest. Children face higher non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks compared to adults. Mercury poses the highest ecological risk, while chromium (Cr) poses the greatest health hazard for all populations. Oral ingestion represents the highest non-oncogenic and oncogenic risks in all age groups. Adults faced acceptable non-carcinogenic risks. Children in the southwest region confront higher health risks, both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic, from mining activities. Urgent measures are vital to mitigate Hg and Cr contamination while promoting handwashing practices is essential to minimize health risks.

Abstract Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can significantly impact the brain development of the fetus, leading to long-term cognitive and behavioral problems. However, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the acute and chronic effects of binge-like alcohol exposure during the third trimester equivalent in postnatal day 7 (P7) mice on brain cell viability, synapse activity, cognitive and behavioral performance, and gene expression profiles at P60. Our results showed that alcohol exposure caused neuroapoptosis in P7 mouse brains immediately after a 6-hour exposure. In addition, P60 mice exposed to alcohol during P7 displayed impaired learning and memory abilities and anxiety-like behaviors. Electrophysiological analysis of hippocampal neurons revealed an excitatory/inhibitory imbalance in alcohol-treated P60 mice compared to controls, with decreased excitation and increased inhibition. Furthermore, our bioinformatic analysis of 376 dysregulated genes in P60 mouse brains following alcohol exposure identified 50 synapse-related and 23 mitochondria-related genes. These genes encoded proteins located in various parts of the synapse, synaptic cleft, extra-synaptic space, synaptic membranes, or mitochondria, and were associated with different biological processes and functions, including the regulation of synaptic transmission, transport, synaptic vesicle cycle, metabolism, synaptogenesis, mitochondrial activity, cognition, and behavior. The dysregulated synapse and mitochondrial genes were predicted to interact in overlapping networks. Our findings suggest that altered synaptic activities and signaling networks may contribute to alcohol-induced long-term cognitive and behavioral impairments in mice, providing new insights into the underlying synaptic and mitochondrial molecular mechanisms and potential neuroprotective strategies.

Abstract Background Sepsis is life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a common sepsis-associated injury that can increase postoperative mortality but the mechanism is still unclear. Main text The role of neutrophils in the pathophysiology of sepsis was deeply challenged after the discovery of NETosis, a process resulting in neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release. NETs can support thrombin generation and the concept of immunothrombosis has emerged as a new innate response to infection. Immunothrombosis leads to thrombosis in microvessels and supports immune cells together with specific thrombus-related molecules. ARDS is a common sepsis-associated organ injury. Immunothrombosis participates in thrombosis in pulmonary capillaries. Intervention regarding immunothrombosis in ARDS is a key scientific problem. PAD4 is the key enzyme regulating the NET skeleton protein histone H3 to citrulline histone to form NETs in immune thrombosis. This review summarizes NETosis and immunohaemostasis, ARDS and therapeutic opportunities targeting PAD4 via PAD4 inhibitors and lncRNAs potentially, providing future therapies. Conclusions We identified and summarized the fundamental definition of ARDS and the concept of immune thrombosis and its composition. NETs activation has become particularly relevant in the formation of immune thrombosis. The taskforce highlighted the intervention targets of PAD4, including noncoding RNAs, potentially providing future therapeutic targets to confront the high postoperative mortality of ARDS.

Combining first-principles calculations and classical nucleation theory, the results of elemental doping on the structure, electrons and stability of niobium carbides are investigated. Ti, Cr and Mn doping altered the physical characteristics of the carbides, resulting in lower mismatch strains and interfacial energies between the carbide and the substrate. Elemental doping reduced the critical nucleation size of carbides and contributed to the promotion of carbide nucleation. However, excessive doping with Cr and Mn increases the formation energy of carbides and unfavorable to carbide stabilization. Therefore, Cr and Mn are involved in the early elemental aggregation of carbides, while Ti and Nb are the main carbide-forming elements. The nano-precipitated phases of various compositions produced in niobium microalloyed steel were experimentally validated utilizing transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and three-dimensional atom probe tomography (3D-APT). The carbides primarily composed of Nb, Ti and C elements, with the presence of Cr and Mn in the core region leading to the formation of a core-shell structure, which is consistent with theoretical calculations.

Abstract For molecular breeding of future apples, wild apple (Malus sieversii), the primary progenitor of domesticated apples, provides abundant genetic diversity and disease-resistance traits. Valsa canker (caused by the fungal pathogen Valsa mali) poses a major threat to wild apple population as well as to cultivated apple production in China. In the present study, we developed an efficient system for screening disease-resistant genes of M. sieversii in response to V. mali. An optimal agrobacterium-mediated transient transformation of M. sieversii was first used to manipulate in situ the expression of candidate genes. After that, the pathogen V. mali was inoculated on transformed leaves and stems, and 3 additional methods for slower disease courses were developed for V. mali inoculation. To identify the resistant genes, a series of experiments were performed including morphological (incidence, lesion area/length, fungal biomass), physiological (H2O2 content, malondialdehyde content), and molecular (Real-time quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction) approaches. Using the optimized system, we identified two transcription factors with high resistance to V. mali, MsbHLH41 and MsEIL3. Furthermore, 35 and 45 downstream genes of MsbHLH41 and MsEIL3 were identified by screening the V. mali response gene database in M. sieversii, respectively. Overall, these results indicate that the disease-resistant gene screening system has a wide range of applications for identifying resistant genes and exploring their immune regulatory networks.

Abstract Backgrounds Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by synovial hyperplasia. Maintaining a balance between the proliferation and apoptosis of rheumatoid arthritis synovial fibroblasts (RASFs) is crucial for preventing the erosion of bone and cartilage and, ultimately, mitigating the progression of RA. We found that the lncRNA LEF1-AS1 was expressed at low levels in the RASFs and inhibited their abnormal proliferation by targeting PIK3R2 protein and regulating the PI3K/AKT signal pathway through its interaction with miR-30-5p. In this study, we fabricated a nano-drug delivery system for LEF1-AS1 using Zn-Adenine nanoparticles (NPs) as a novel therapeutic strategy against RA. Methods The expression levels of LEF1-AS1, miR-30-5p, PIK3R2, p-PI3K, and p-AKT were detected in the primary RASFs and a human fibroblast-like synovial cell line (HFLS). Zn-Adenine nanoparticles (NPs) were functionalized with anti-CD305 antibody to construct (Zn-Adenine)@Ab. These NPs were then loaded with LEF1-AS1 to form (Zn-Adenine)@Ab@lncRNA LEF1-AS1. Finally, the (Zn-Adenine)@Ab@lncRNA LEF1-AS1 NPs were locally injected into a rat model with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). The arthritic injuries in each group were evaluated by HE staining and other methods. Results LEF1-AS1 was expressed at low levels in the primary RASFs. High expression levels of LEF1-AS1 were detected in the HFLS cells, which corresponded to a significant downregulation of miR-30-5p. In addition, the expression level of PIK3R2 was significantly increased, and that of p-PI3K and p-AKT were significantly downregulated in these cells. The (Zn-Adenine)@Ab@lncRNA LEF1-AS1 NPs significantly inhibited the proliferation of RASFs and decreased the production of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α). Intra-articular injection (IAI) of (Zn-Adenine)@Ab@lncRNA LEF1-AS1 NPs significantly alleviated cartilage destruction and joint injury in the CIA-modeled rats. Conclusions LEF1-AS1 interacts with miR-30-5p to inhibit the abnormal proliferation of RASFs by regulating the PI3K/AKT signal pathway. The (Zn-Adenine)@Ab NPs achieved targeted delivery of the loaded LEF1-AS1 into the RASFs, which improved the cellular internalization rate and therapeutic effects. Thus, LEF1-AS1 is a potential target for the treatment of RA.

Abstract Background Respiratory variation in the internal jugular vein (IJVV) has not shown promising results in predicting volume responsiveness in ventilated patients with low tidal volume (Vt) in prone position. We aimed to determine whether the baseline respiratory variation in the IJVV value measured by ultrasound might predict fluid responsiveness in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) undergoing posterior spinal fusion (PSF) with low Vt. Methods According to the fluid responsiveness results, the included patients were divided into two groups: those who responded to volume expansion, denoted the responder group, and those who did not respond, denoted the non-responder group. The primary outcome was determination of the value of baseline IJVV in predicting fluid responsiveness (≥15% increases in stroke volume index (SVI) after 7 ml·kg-1 colloid administration) in patients with AIS undergoing PSF during low Vt ventilation. Secondary outcomes were estimation of the diagnostic performance of pulse pressure variation (PPV), stroke volume variation (SVV), and the combination of IJVV and PPV in predicting fluid responsiveness in this surgical setting. The ability of each parameter to predict fluid responsiveness was assessed using a receiver operating characteristic curve. Results Fifty-six patients were included, 36 (64.29%) of whom were deemed fluid responsive. No significant difference in baseline IJVV was found between responders and non-responders (25.89% vs. 23.66%, p = 0.73), and no correlation was detected between baseline IJVV and the increase in SVI after volume expansion (r = 0.14, p = 0.40). A baseline IJVV greater than 32.00%, SVV greater than 14.30%, PPV greater than 11.00%, and a combination of IJVV and PPV greater than 64.00% had utility in identifying fluid responsiveness, with a sensitivity of 33.33%, 77.78%, 55.56%, and 55.56%, respectively, and a specificity of 80.00%, 50.00%, 65.00%, and 65.00%, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the baseline values of IJVV, SVV, PPV, and the combination of IJVV and PPV was 0.52 (95% CI, 0.38–0.65, p=0.83), 0.54 (95% CI, 0.40–0.67, p=0.67), 0.58 (95% CI, 0.45–0.71, p=0.31), and 0.57 (95% CI, 0.43–0.71, p=0.37), respectively. Conclusions Ultrasonic-derived IJVV lacked accuracy in predicting fluid responsiveness in patients with AIS undergoing PSF during low Vt ventilation. In addition, the baseline values of PPV, SVV, and the combination of IJVV and PPV did not predict fluid responsiveness in this surgical setting. Abstract Objective To examine the effect of preoperative sleep disorders on delirium in patients older than 60 years of age who underwent surgery for proximal femoral fracture. Methods This is a prospective observational study. We prospectively selected 143 patients with proximal femoral fracture who underwent surgery between April 2021 and April 2022. The primary outcome was postoperative delirium (PD). Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was generated. The preoperative sleep quality of all eligible participants was assessed through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) was used to assess PD from the first to the seventh day postoperatively. Patients were divided into two groups according to the PD diagnosis: (1) the no PD (NPD) group and (2) the PD (PD) group. Results Of 143 eligible patients, 43 (30.1%) were diagnosed with PD. Food waste is increasingly becoming a global challenge, and school canteens are a significant and severe source of food waste. Reducing food waste is conducive to ensuring food security and environmental sustainability. A good understanding on the influencing factors of food waste is a prerequisite for exploring effective measures to reduce food waste. We obtained senior high school first-hand food waste data through field survey using the methods of face-to-face interview, questionnaire survey, and direct weighing in September 2019. Our survey data showed that the per capita per meal food waste of senior high school students (SHSS) was 44.48 g. The specific performance was as follows: the per capita per meal food waste of breakfast, lunch, and dinner was 22.39, 55.28, and 54.24 g, respectively. The empirical results showed that the frequency of eating snacks had a significant effect on whether the SHSS had food waste behavior and significantly affected the amount of food waste by SHSS. With the increased frequency of eating snacks, the food waste probability was increased and the amount of food waste was greater. This study suggested that we could eat snacks but reduced the frequency of eating snacks to achieve the goal of mitigating food waste. This was a simple and effective way to reduce food waste.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. A study proved that brexpiprazole, as a novel dopamine receptor partial agonist, can also prevent CRC cell proliferation. Therefore, clarifying the molecular mechanism of brexpiprazole is vital to developing a novel therapeutic strategy for CRC. Methods: The effect of brexpiprazole on human colorectal cancer cell proliferation was measured with Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) kits. Cell migration capability was measured using wound healing and transwell. Cell apoptosis was evaluated with a flow cytometer. Western blots and immunohistochemical staining were used to evaluate protein expression. The effects observed in vitro were also confirmed in xenograft models. Results: Brexpiprazole remarkably inhibited the proliferation, suppressed the migration ability, and induced apoptosis of colorectal cancer cells. Mechanism study showed that brexpiprazole exerted these effects by inhibiting the EGFR pathway. Brexpiprazole enhanced HCT116 cells’ sensitivity to cetuximab, and a combination of brexpiprazole and cetuximab inhibited xenograft tumor growth in vivo. Conclusions: Our finding suggested that brexpiprazole inhibits proliferation, promotes apoptosis, and enhances CRC cells’ sensitivity to cetuximab by regulating the EGFR pathway and it might be an efficacious treatment strategy for CRC.

To reduce the heat island effect brought by conventional asphalt roofing products with high solar absorption, we propose a category of self-cleaning and self-cooling composited roofing tile (CRT) made of old corrugated containers (OCC) and tung oil inspired by traditional Chinese oil-paper umbrellas, which can be fabricated at scale and easily recycled for roofing applications. Compared with asphalt shingles, CRTs can improve the solar reflection due to the randomized structure of the cellulose microfibers, contributing to a significant temperature difference of ∼13.2 °C. In addition, they have a high thermal emissivity of 0.93 in the atmospheric window, radiating great amounts of heat into the cold outer space (∼ 3 K). The top layer tung oil film smeared on the OCC pulp fibers transforms the roofing tile from a waterabsorbing to a waterproofing state and significantly enhances the mechanical strength, contributing to a stable thermal performance in outdoor applications. Furthermore, dyed CRTs can selectively reflect visible light for desired colors and effectively reflect near-infrared light to reduce solar heating, which synchronously achieves roof cooling and aesthetic variety. These cheap, eco-friendly, and multifunctional roofing tiles can provide a value-added path for OCC recycling, which may inspire more radiative cooling composites purely from recycling waste towards an energy-saving and sustainable society.

Phosphorus and nitrogen pollution from agricultural nonpoint sources heavily burden the water environment, and a scientific calculating system is needed to calculate the pollutant loads under the water pollution treatment. This study established a system to calculate the coefficients of agricultural nonpoint source pollutants into water bodies in the subregion in Poyang Lake basin in the middle reach of the Yangtze River combining with multiple driving factors. Validation results showed that the errors of the typical unit were 30.58% for total phosphorus (TP), 13.43% for total nitrogen (TN) and 33.93% for ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), respectively. The errors of the subregion were 26.92% for TP, 31.83% for TN and 29.15% for NH3-N, respectively. Besides, there were higher TP and TN loads in the east area of subregion in both units and county scales, which indicated the heavy phosphorus and nitrogen burden on water environment. In contrast, higher NH3-N loads occurred in the north area of subregion. The establishment of coefficient system for agricultural pollutants into water bodies and the pollutant loads calculation would provide enlightenment for water pollution treatment and agricultural nonpoint source pollution controlling.

Objective This study aimed to explore whether circadian rhythm of blood pressure is associated with brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in patients with essential hypertension. Method This cross-sectional study included 4,217 patients with essential hypertension who completed 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, baPWV, and FMD. BaPWV and FMD were measured to evaluate arterial stiffness and endothelial dysfunction. IntroductionThree-dimensional spectral distributions of forest stands can provide spatial information on the physiological and biochemical status of forests, which is vital for forest management. However, three-dimensional spectral studies of forest stands are limited.MethodsIn this study, LiDAR and multispectral data were collected from Masson pine stands in southern Fujian Province, China, and a method was proposed for inverting forest spectra using point clouds as a unit. First, multispectral values were mapped to a point cloud, and the isolated forest algorithm combined with K-means clustering was applied to characterize fusion data. Second, five deep learning algorithms were selected for semantic segmentation, and the overall accuracy (oAcc) and mean intersection ratio (mIoU) were used to evaluate the performance of various algorithms on the fusion data set. Third, the semantic segmentation model was used to reconfigure the class 3D spectral distribution, and the model inversion outcomes were evaluated by the peaks and valleys of the curve of the predicted values and distribution gaps.ResultsThe results show that the correlations between spectral attributes and between spatial attributes were both greater than 0.98, while the correlation between spectral and spatial attributes was 0.43. The most applicable method was PointMLP, highest oAcc was 0.84, highest mIoU was 0.75, peak interval of the prediction curve tended to be consistent with the true values, and maximum difference between the predicted value and the true value of the point cloud spectrum was 0.83.DiscussionExperimental data suggested that combining spatial fusion and semantic segmentation effectively inverts three-dimensional spectral information for forest stands. The model could meet the accuracy requirements of local spectral inversion, and the NIR values of stands in different regions were correlated with the vertical height of the canopy and the distance from the tree apex in the region. These findings improve our understanding of the precise three-dimensional spectral distribution of forests, providing a basis for near-earth remote sensing of forests and the estimation of forest stand health.

Pre-harvest bagging can improve fruit color and protects against diseases. However, it was discovered that improper bagging times could lead to peel browning in production. Using the Ruixue apple variety as the research model, a study was conducted to compare the external and internal quality of fruits bagged at seven different timings between 50 and 115 days after full bloom (DAFB). Our findings indicate that delaying the bagging time can reduce the occurrence of peel browning in Ruixue apples. Compared to the control, the special bag reduced the browning index by 22.95%. However, the fruit point index of Ruixue fruits increased by 65.05% at 115 DAFB compared to 50 DAFB when bagging was delayed. The chlorophyll content of Ruixue fruits in special bags generally increased and then decreased, with the highest chlorophyll content of Ruixue fruits in special bags at 90 DAFB, which was 26.02 mg·kg−1. When the bagging process was delayed, the soluble solids, total phenols, and flavonoids content in the fruits increased, while the number of control volatiles decreased by 10. After two years of testing, results show that using special fruit bags at 90 DAFB bagging can significantly improve the fruit quality of Ruixue apple.

Pathogenic fungi secrete numerous effectors into host cells to manipulate plants’ defense mechanisms. Valsa mali, a necrotrophic fungus, severely impacts apple production in China due to the occurrence of Valsa canker. Here, we predicted 210 candidate effector protein (CEP)-encoding genes from V. mali. The transcriptome analysis revealed that 146 CEP-encoding genes were differentially expressed during the infection of the host, Malus sieversii. Proteome analysis showed that 27 CEPs were differentially regulated during the infection stages. Overall, 25 of the 146 differentially expressed CEP-encoding genes were randomly selected to be transiently expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana. Pathogenicity analysis showed that the transient expression of VM1G-05058 suppressed BAX-triggered cell death while the expression of VM1G-10148 and VM1G-00140 caused cell death in N. benthamiana. In conclusion, by using multi-omics analysis, we identified potential effector candidates for further evaluation in vivo. Our results will provide new insights into the investigation of virulent mechanisms of V. mali.

The safe and stable operation of the radial gate is highly essential for hydropower stations. As the dynamic load of gate, water flow generally causes the irregular distribution of strength, stiffness, and the stability of the gate structure. Traditional simulation technology is usually used to investigate the impact of water flow on gate structure; however, there is a lack of integration and interaction of building information modeling (BIM) and numerical simulation technology to study this issue. Therefore, this paper proposed a computational framework combing BIM and numerical simulation to calculate and analyze the large complex hydraulic radial steel structure. Firstly, the 3D model of the radial gate was established by MicroStation2020, then, the finite element model was output by using it. Secondly, the change laws of strength, stiffness, and stability of the radial gate were analyzed by Ansys-Workbench2020R2 under different opening degrees. The numerical simulation results show that the maximum equivalent stress value was 142.19 MPa, which occurred at the joint between the lower longitudinal beam and the door blade. The maximum deformation was 3.446 mm, which occurred at two longitudinal beams’ middle in the lower part of the panel. When the opening degree is 0.0 m–9.0 m, the natural vibration frequency increases irregularly with the increase in the opening of the gate. Three main vibration modes of the gate vibration were obtained. It proves that it is feasible to analyze the structural performance of radial gates by using BIM and numerical simulation. Finally, the BIM and numerical simulation information management process was established to make the simulation results more valuable. This study expands the application value of BIM and provides a new research idea for large complex hydraulic steel structural analysis. The information management process described in this research can serve as a guide for gate operation and maintenance management.

Abstract Reliable city-level product, building, and infrastructure material stocks data are essential for understanding historical material use patterns, benchmarking material efficiency, and informing future recycling potentials. However, such urban material stocks data are often limited, due primarily to unavailable, inconsistent, or noncontinuous city-level statistics. Here, we provided such an Urban Product, Building, and Infrastructure Material Stocks (UPBIMS) dataset for China, a country that has undergone a remarkable urbanization process in the past decades, by collating different official statistics and applying various gap-filling methods. This dataset contains the stock of 24 materials contained in 10 types of products, buildings, and infrastructure in all 337 prefecture-level cities in China from 1978 to 2020. This quality controlled and unified dataset is the first of its kind with such a full coverage of all prefecture-level Chinese cities and can be used in a variety of applications, for example in urban geography, industrial ecology, circular economy, and climate change mitigation. Every piece of data is tagged with its source and the dataset will be periodically updated.

A massive rock and ice avalanche occurred on the western slope of the Ronti Gad valley in the northern part of Chamoli, Indian Himalaya, on 7 February 7, 2021. The avalanche on the high mountain slope at an elevation of 5600 m above sea level triggered a long runout disaster chain, including rock mass avalanche, debris avalanche, and flood. The disaster chain had a horizontal travel distance of larger than 17,600 m and an elevation difference of 4300 m. In this study, the disaster characteristics and dynamic process were analyzed by multitemporal satellite imagery. The results show that the massive rock and ice avalanche was caused by four large expanding discontinuity planes. The disaster chain was divided into five zones by satellite images and field observation, including source zone, transition zone, dynamic entrainment zone, flow deposition zone, and flood zone. The entrainment effect and melting water were recognized as the main causes of the long-runout distance. Based on the seismic wave records and field videos, the time progress of the disaster was analyzed and the velocity of frontal debris at different stages was calculated. The total analyzed disaster duration was 1247 s, and the frontal debris velocity colliding with the second hydropower station was approximately 23 m/s. This study also carried out the numerical simulation of the disaster by rapid mass movement simulation (RAMMS). The numerical results reproduced the dynamic process of the debris avalanche, and the mechanism of long-runout avalanche was further verified by parametric study. Furthermore, this study discussed the potential causes of disaster and flood and the roles of satellite images and seismic networks in the monitoring and early-warning.

Ultraviolet B (UV-B, 280–320 nm) radiation is a major environmental stressor for aquatic organisms on Earth's surface. Its effects on biological systems are well known, but the mechanisms by which organisms respond and adapt to UV-B radiation are still being explored. In this study, we investigated the effects of UV-B radiation on the monogonont rotifer Brachionus asplanchnoidis, focusing on physiological parameters, antioxidant systems, DNA damage, and DNA repair-related molecular mechanism. Our results showed that the LD50 was at 28.53 kJ/m2, indicating strong tolerance to UV-B. However, UV-B radiation caused adverse effects on growth and reproduction, with shortened reproductive period and longevity, decreased fecundity and hatchability, and inhibition of population growth. Biochemical analyses revealed severe oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation, with increased ROS and MDA levels. Activities of antioxidant enzymes were highly induced at low doses but decreased at high doses. DNA damage also occurred in UV-B-exposed rotifers. Furthermore, selected DNA repair-related genes were up-regulated in a dose-dependent manner. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of UV-B radiation on rotifers and highlight the importance of considering both ecological and molecular responses in assessing the impact of UV-B radiation on aquatic organisms.

Abstract Background Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an important technique of first aid. It is necessary to be popularized. Large-scale offline training has been affected after the outbreak of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Online training will be the future trend, but the quality of online assessment is unclear. This study aims to compare online and offline evaluations of CPR quality using digital simulator and specialist scoring methods. Methods Forty-eight out of 108 contestants who participated in the second Chinese National CPR Skill Competition held in 2020 were included in this study. The competition comprised two stages. In the preliminary online competition, the contestants practiced on the digital simulator while the specialist teams scored live videos. The final competition was held offline, and consisted of live simulator scoring and specialist scoring. The grades of the simulator and specialists in different stages were compared. Results There was no statistical significance for simulator grades between online and offline competition(37.7 ± 2.0 vs. 36.4 ± 3.4, p = 0.169). Catastrophic landslides occur frequently in Guizhou Province, China, and the landslides in this area have special geomorphological, geological, and anthropogenic features. In order to detect and explore the distribution pattern and control factors of active landslides in Guizhou, firstly, a total of 693 active landslides throughout Guizhou Province were mapped based on the deformation rate, which was obtained by spatiotemporal filtering and Intermittent Small Baseline Subset (ISBAS) Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) techniques. Then, the relationships between the detected landslides and elevation, aspect, slope gradient, and stratigraphic lithology were analysed. Moreover, it was found that the landslides were mainly concentrated in three stratigraphic combinations, that is T1f~P2l−d, T1f~T1yn, and T2g~T1yn. Thereafter, the correlation coefficients between the landslide density and elevation and distance to the stratigraphic boundary were 0.54 and −0.19, indicating that the distribution of landslides was significantly controlled by the elevation and the boundary of specific stratigraphic combinations. Finally, we chose a typical landslide to explore how landslide development was controlled by the combined effects of elevation and stratigraphy by using ascending and descending InSAR results. We revealed that landslides occurred primarily in areas with a steep slope and a stratigraphy characterized by mudstone and sandstone.

The conflict between economic growth and the arable land demand poses a significant challenge to maintaining food security and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Meanwhile, substantial regional disparities in food consumption contribute to variations in land demand, further exacerbating constraints on food security. However, few studies have delved into regional differences in land demand related to food consumption. To bridge these gaps, this study estimated the arable land demand and associated pressures, considering food consumption patterns and the land footprint across 31 provincial districts in China. The findings reveal that grains remain the primary crop consumed by Chinese residents. Notably, the food consumption pattern exhibits substantial disparities among provincial districts, particularly concerning livestock products. Given China's vast population and escalating consumption of livestock, the country demonstrates heightened land demands. While China does not face a national-level food security threat, regional disparities are evident, with eight provincial districts facing potential food security risks. This study explored the challenges and pathways in maintaining food security and the visions to achieve it, emphasizing the importance of sustaining a balanced food consumption pattern, reducing food waste, improving environmentally friendly agriculture practices, formulating effective and continuous laws and regulations, and exploring potential land resource development to alleviate the pressure on arable land and ensure food security.

Background: Functional constipation is a common gastrointestinal disorder especially severely affecting the life quality of the aged. Jichuanjian (JCJ) has been widely used for aged functional constipation (AFC) in clinic. Yet, the mechanisms of JCJ merely scratch the surface with being studied at a single level, rather than from a systematic perspective of the whole. Aim: The purpose of this study was to explore the underlying mechanisms of JCJ in treating AFC from the perspectives of fecal metabolites and related pathways, gut microbiota, key gene targets and functional pathways, as well as “behaviors-microbiota-metabolites” relationships. Methods: 16S rRNA analysis and fecal metabolomics combined with network pharmacology were applied to investigate the abnormal performances of AFC rats, as well as the regulatory effects of JCJ. Results: JCJ significantly regulated the abnormalities of rats' behaviors, the microbial richness, and the metabolite profiles that were interrupted by AFC. 19 metabolites were found to be significantly associated with AFC involving in 15 metabolic pathways. Delightfully, JCJ significantly regulated 9 metabolites and 6 metabolic pathways. AFC significantly interrupted the levels of 4 differential bacteria while JCJ significantly regulated the level of SMB53. HSP90AA1 and TP53 were the key genes, and pathways in cancer was the most relevant signaling pathways involving in the mechanisms of JCJ. Conclusion: The current findings not only reveal that the occurrence of AFC is closely related to gut microbiota mediating amino acid and energy metabolism, but also demonstrate the effects and the underlying mechanisms of JCJ on AFC.

Abstract Background Previous study found that C-reactive protein (CRP) can predict bleeding after on-pump CABG. To evaluate whether preoperative C-reactive protein (CRP) can be a novel marker of postoperative bleeding in patients having off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Among the most important transcription factors in plants, the v-myb avian myeloblastosis viral oncogene homolog (MYB) regulates the expression network of response genes under stresses such as fungal infection. In China, the canker disease Valsa mali threatens the survival of Malus sieversii, an ancestor of cultivated apples. Using the M. sieversii genome, we identified 457 MsMYB and 128 R2R3-MsMYB genes that were randomly distributed across 17 chromosomes. Based on protein sequence and structure, the R2R3-MsMYB genes were phylogenetically divided into 29 categories, and 26 conserved motifs were identified. We further predicted cis-elements in the 2000-kb promoter region of R2R3-MsMYBs based on the genome. Transcriptome analysis of M. sieversii under V. mali infection showed that 27 R2R3-MsMYBs were significantly differentially expressed, indicating their key role in the response to V. mali infection. Using transient transformation, MsMYB14, MsMYB24, MsMYB39, MsMYB78, and MsMYB108, which were strongly induced by V. mali infection, were functionally identified. Among the five MsMYBs, MsMYB14 and MsMYB78 were both important in enhancing resistance to diseases, whereas MsMYB24 inhibited resistance. Based on the results of this study, we gained a better understanding of the MsMYB transcription factor family and laid the foundation for a future research program on disease prevention strategies in M. sieversii.

IntroductionNational parks, defined as the mainstay of the nature reserve system in China, pursue to achieve scientific protection and rational utilization of natural resources. However, eco-environmental and socioeconomic benefits are rarely considered together. Hereby, how to quantitatively express the relationship between humanity and nature in national parks needs further exploration. We selected the Three-River-Source National Park (TRSNP), China's largest national park by area and the world's highest altitude national park, as a representative case to construct an evaluation model for the degree of harmony between humanity and the nature of the national alpine ecological park.MethodsBased on the field survey data, the meteorological data, the remote sensing data, and the socioeconomic data, the study used the model inversion and the spatial analysis methods to quantitatively evaluate the degree of harmony consisting of 12 indexes from a fresh perspective of a combination of the ecological environment and social economy. Considering the TRSNP establishment in 2016 as the time node, we assessed and compared the degree of harmony between humanity and nature during the dynamic baseline period (2011–2015) and the evaluation period (2016–2020).ResultsThe results show that the degree of harmony between humanity and nature showed a gradual upward trend from the northwest to the southeast in the TRSNP. Compared with the dynamic baseline period, the eco-environmental and socioeconomic levels of the evaluation period were increased by 34.48 and 5.46%, respectively. Targeted gene therapy has shown durable efficacy in non-neoplastic and neoplastic patients. Therefore, finding a suitable target has become a key area of research. Mesenchyme homeobox 1 (MEOX1) is a transcriptional factor that plays a significant role in regulation of somite development. Evidence indicates that abnormalities in MEOX1 expression and function are associated with a variety of pathologies, including non-neoplastic and neoplastic diseases. MEOX1 expression is upregulated during progression of most diseases and plays a critical role in maintenance of the cellular phenotypes such as cell differentiation, cell cycle arrest and senescence, migration, and proliferation. Therefore, MEOX1 may become an important molecular target and therapeutic target. This review will discuss the current state of knowledge on the role of MEOX1 in different diseases.

Long-runout landslides occur frequently in the sandstone and mudstone mountainous areas in southwestern China under heavy rainfall conditions. This has been a key issue in the field of disaster prevention and reduction. Considering the Niuerwan landslide in Wulong, Chongqing, on 13 July 2020, as an example, we employed technical methodologies, including unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images, field investigation, geological condition analysis (including geomorphology and topography, stratigraphic structure and formation lithology, etc.), interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) monitoring and Particle Flow Code 3D (PFC3D) simulations to study failure mechanism and a long-runout motion model of flow-like landslides induced by the heavy rainfall. The results showed that (1) the large differences between the upper and lower strata are the root cause of the instability and long-runout fluidization movement; (2) heavy rainfall is the key driving factor of slope instability and deep-seated landslides, leading to long-distance movement of the upper saturated residual soil; (3) the long-runout fluidization model of bedding landslides is mainly divided into the overall sliding in the lower layer, the mixing of coarse and fine particles in the middle layer, and saturation fluidization in the upper layer; and (4) the long-runout fluidization process of bedding landslides is composed of three stages: overall instability, mixed acceleration, and fluidization accumulation. In view of these findings, in the risk evaluation and prediction of long-runout fluidization landslides in sandstone and mudstone mountainous areas, this particular disaster model can be used to provide quantitative references for disaster prevention and mitigation.

Eremosparton songoricum (Litv.) Vass. is a rare and extremely drought-tolerant legume shrub that is distributed in Central Asia. E. songoricum naturally grows on bare sand and can tolerate multiple extreme environmental conditions. It is a valuable and important plant resource for desertification prevention and environmental protection, as well as a good material for the exploration of stress tolerance mechanisms and excellent tolerant gene mining. However, the regeneration system for E. songoricum has not yet been established, which markedly limits the conservation and utilization of this endangered and valuable desert legume. Assimilated branches derived from seedlings were cultured on several MS mediums supplemented with various concentrations of TDZ or 6-BA in different combinations with NAA. The results showed that the most efficient multiplication medium was MS medium supplemented with 0.4 mg/L 6-BA and 0.1 mg/L NAA. The most efficient rooting medium was WPM + 25 g/L sucrose. The highest survival rate (77.8%) of transplantation was achieved when the ratio of sand to vermiculite was 1:1. In addition, the optimal callus induction medium was MS + 30 g/L sucrose + 2 mg/L TDZ + 0.5 mg/L NAA in darkness. The E. songoricum callus treated with 100 mM NaCl and 300 mM mannitol on MS medium could be used in proper salt and drought stress treatments in subsequent gene function tests. A rapid and efficient regeneration system for E. songoricum that allowed regeneration within 3 months was developed. The protocol will contribute to the conservation and utilization of this rare and endangered desert stress-tolerant species and also provide a fundamental basis for gene functional analysis in E. songoricum.

The accurate mapping and analysis of coastal wetlands and their dynamics are crucial for local coastal wetland protection, sustainable social development, and biodiversity preservation. However, detailed mapping and comprehensive analysis of coastal wetlands remain scarce. In this study, we utilized Landsat-TM/OLI remote sensing data and employed the linear spectral mixture analysis (LSMA) method to map changes in coastal wetlands and analyze their dynamics in the Yellow River Delta (YRD) from 1991 to 2020. Our mapping results demonstrate high accuracy and are consistent with previous studies, boasting an overall accuracy exceeding 96%. During the period of 1991–2020, the YRD estuary expanded by approximately 8744.58 ha towards the east and north. The vegetation of P. australis and S. salsa underwent transformation due to agricultural practices or degradation to bare flats. Moreover, these areas saw extensive colonization by the invasive species S. alterniflora. Over the three decades, S. alterniflora expanded approximately 5 km along the coast, significantly impacting the local coastal wetland biodiversity. Furthermore, a considerable number of natural wetlands transitioned into human-made wetlands from 1991 to 2014. In particular, bare flats underwent substantial changes, transforming into aquaculture sites and salt exploitation areas. These dynamics in coastal wetlands had significant repercussions on local ecosystems, including wetland fragmentation, biodiversity depletion, and water pollution. However, post-2014, numerous wetland protection strategies were implemented, resulting in the restoration of natural wetlands. Detailed wetland mapping and dynamic analysis furnish valuable insights for the management, protection, and sustainable utilization of diverse coastal wetlands.

The vanadium content of molten iron is an important economic indicator for a vanadium–titanium magnetite smelting blast furnace, and it is of great importance in blast furnace production to be able to accurately predict it and optimize the operation of vanadium extraction. Based on the historical data of a commercial blast furnace, the clean data were obtained by processing the missing data and outlier data for data mining analysis and model development. A combined wavelet-TCN model was used to predict the vanadium content of molten iron. The average Hurst index after wavelet transform was calculated to reduce the complexity of the wavelet transform layer selection and the model computation time. The results show that compared to single models, such as LSTM, LSTM with attention, and TCN, the combined model based on wavelet-TCN (a = 5) had an improvement of about 11~17% in R2, and the prediction accuracy was high and stable, which met the practical requirements of blast furnace production. The factors affecting the vanadium content of molten iron were analyzed, and the measures to increase the vanadium content were summarized. A blast furnace should avoid increasing the titanium dioxide load, increase the vanadium load appropriately, and keep the relevant operating parameters within the appropriate range in order to achieve the optimization of vanadium extraction from molten iron.

Abstract Haze has reached epidemic levels in many Chinese cities in recent years. Few studies have explored the determinants and heterogeneity of PM2.5. This paper investigates the spatiotemporal characteristics of PM2.5 through spatial analytical methods based on aerosol optical depth data from the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) between 2000 and 2017. Geographically weighted regression and geodetector models were applied to assess the heterogeneity of key factors influencing PM2.5. The results indicate that the annual concentrations of PM2.5 in the YREB were 23.49–37.37 μg/m3, with an initial increase and a later decrease. PM2.5 pollution showed a diagonal high spatial distribution pattern in the northeast and a low spatial distribution in the southwest, as well as a noticeable spatial convergence. The spatial variability of PM2.5 was enlarged, and its main fractal dimension was in the northeast-southwest direction. There were clear spatiotemporal variations in the impacts of natural and anthropogenic factors on PM2.5. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the impact mechanisms of PM2.5 and the geographic factors that form persistent and highly polluted areas and imply that more specific coping strategies need to be implemented in various areas toward successful particulate pollution prevention and control.

Abstract Water evaporation systems with solar energy as the primary driving energy have received extensive attention in recent years. This work studies the preparation method and performance of hydrogel evaporators using chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a framework and carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) as the photothermal material. The evaporation rate of CPC (chitosan/PVA and CNPs) hydrogel obtained reaches 2.28 kg m−2 h−1. Simultaneously, a three-dimensional structure is designed based on the two-dimensional double-layer evaporation system in this study. An evaporator with a tiny-pool structure and a hydrogel with a dome-arrayed structure is designed. These two structures achieve highly efficient evaporation rates of 2.28 kg m−2 h−1 and 3.80 kg m−2 h−1, respectively. These optimized designs improve the evaporation rate of the overall system by ~ 66.7%. The developed evaporation devices provide a promising pathway for developing the double-layer evaporators, which promote the new development of water purification with a solar-driven evaporation system.

BackgroundThis study aimed to develop an autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) risk prediction model for patients with vitiligo based on readily available characteristics.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical characteristics, demographics, skin lesions, and laboratory test results of patients with vitiligo. To develop a model to predict the risk of AITD, the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) method was used to optimize feature selection, and logistic regression analysis was used to select further features. The C-index, Hosmer–Lemeshow test, and decision curve analysis were used to evaluate the calibration, discrimination ability and clinical utility of the model. Internally, the model was verified using bootstrapping; externally, two independent cohorts were used to confirm model accuracy.ResultsSex, vitiligo type, family history of AITD, family history of other autoimmune disease, thyroid nodules or tumors, negative emotions, skin involvement exceeding 5% of body surface area, and positive immune serology (IgA, IgG, IgM, C3, and C4) were predictors of AITD in the prediction nomogram. The model showed good calibration and discrimination (C-index: 0.746; 95% confidence interval: 0.701–0.792). The accuracy of this predictive model was 74.6%.In both internal validation (a C-index of 1000 times) and external validation, the C-index outperformed (0.732, 0.869, and 0.777). The decision curve showed that the AITD nomogram had a good guiding role in clinical practice.ConclusionThe novel AITD nomogram effectively evaluated the risk of AITD in patients with vitiligo.

BackgroundPatients with hepatocellular carcinoma are often affected by metastases, but condylar metastasis is particularly rare.Case presentationA 51-year-old man with a history of hepatocellular carcinoma requested treatment for facial pain. Computed tomography indicated that the condylar bone has been destroyed and fractured. Pathology confirmed condylar metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma. Complete metastasectomy and condylar reconstruction were performed to preserve his facial appearance. No local recurrence or distant metastasis was found at 8 months of follow-up.ConclusionThe condyle can be a metastatic site of hepatocellular carcinoma, regardless of its rarity. Long-term comprehensive surveillance and follow-up are needed for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The presence of solitary mass does exclude the possibility of metastatic cancer for these patients, and postoperative imaging and pathological diagnosis are important to determine its origin. If patients’ physical condition permits, the mass can be completely excised, and the physiological function can be restored and reconstructed.

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a respiratory disorder characterized by severe inflammation of the alveoli and lung parenchyma. Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), the main active compound in Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort (LC), can protect against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI. Our study aimed to investigate how TMP protects the endothelial cell barrier in pulmonary capillaries. We administered TMP intraperitoneally at different doses and found that acute lung injury in mice was improved, but not in a dose-dependent manner. TMP toxicity was tested in vitro. We observed that LPS-induced cytoskeletal remodeling was inhibited by TMP. Murine ALI was induced as follows: For the 1st hit, LPS (2 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally; after 16 h, for the 2nd hit, LPS (4 mg/kg) was instilled intratracheally. The mice in treatment groups had TMP or dexamethasone administered intraperitoneally 30 min prior to the 1st hit and 30 min past the 2nd hit. Mice were euthanized 24 h after the last injecting. We measured protein and mRNA levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcriptase real-time PCR (RT-qPCR), respectively. The ultrastructural analysis was performed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the cytoskeleton was observed by immunofluorescence. Immunohistochemistry and Western blotting were used to detect protein expression in the Rac1/LIMK1/ZO-1/occludin signal pathway. The results showed that TMP treatment decreased inflammatory cell infiltration and alleviated LPS-induced damage in lung tissue. Also, TMP significantly inhibited the Rac1/LIMK1/ZO-1/occludin signaling pathway. Our findings show that using TMP during sepsis can protect the pulmonary microvascular endothelial cell barrier and suppress inflammation. Therefore, TMP may have a promising therapeutic role in preventing acute lung injury from sepsis.
