Abstract Taste, a pivotal sense modality, plays a fundamental role in discerning flavors and evaluating the potential harm of food, thereby contributing to human survival, physical and mental health. Patients with tongue cancer may experience a loss of taste following extensive surgical resection with flap reconstruction. Here, we designed a gustatory interface that enables the non-invasive detection of tongue electrical activities for a comprehensive operative assessment. Moreover, it decodes gustatory information from the reconstructed tongue without taste buds. Our gustatory interface facilitates the recording and analysis of electrical activities on the tongue, yielding an electrical mapping across the entire tongue surface, which delineates the safe margin for surgical management and assesses flap viability for postoperative structure monitoring and prompt intervention. Furthermore, the gustatory interface helps patients discern tastes with an accuracy of 97.8%. Our invention offers a promising approach to clinical assessment and management and holds potential for improving the quality of life for individuals with tongue cancer.

BackgroundThoracic SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumors (SMARCA4-UT) exhibit a notably aggressive phenotype, which is associated with poor patient survival outcomes. These tumors are generally resistant to conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy, thereby limiting the availability of effective treatment options.Case presentationWe describe a 69-year-old AIDS patient who initially presented with a fused, enlarged lymph node on the right clavicle and mild, unexplained pain under the right axilla that worsened with severe coughing episodes. An initial chest CT scan revealed multiple nodular and mass shadows in the mediastinum and multiple nodules in both lungs, as well as a small amount of pericardial effusion. Additionally, serum biomarkers of lung cancer were abnormal as follows: carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) at 13.74 ng/mL, cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA21-1) at 6.82 ng/mL, neuron-specific enolase (NSE) at 25.49 ng/mL, and progastrin-releasing peptide precursor (ProGRP) at 89.35 pg/mL. Subsequent pathology confirmed SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumors. Considering that the weak immune status and intermediate PD-L1 level, the patient was treated with a first-line combination therapy of immunotherapy and anti-angiogenic drug instead of chemo-immunotherapy. The patient responded well to immunotherapy combining anti-angiogenic drugs and achieved an overall survival for more than 22 months.ConclusionOur study presented a rare case of thoracic SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumors and AIDS, suggesting that first-line immunotherapy plus anti-angiogenic drugs as a potential therapeutic option for SMARCA4-UT patients under specific conditions.

Abstract In implantable electrophysiological recording systems, the headstage typically comprises neural probes that interface with brain tissue and integrated circuit chips for signal processing. While advancements in MEMS and CMOS technology have significantly improved these components, their interconnection still relies on conventional printed circuit boards and sophisticated adapters. This conventional approach adds considerable weight and volume to the package, especially for high channel count systems. To address this issue, we developed a through-polymer via (TPV) method inspired by the through-silicon via (TSV) technique in advanced three-dimensional packaging. This innovation enables the vertical integration of flexible probes, amplifier chips, and PCBs, realizing a flexible, lightweight, and integrated device (FLID). The total weight of the FLIDis only 25% that of its conventional counterparts relying on adapters, which significantly increased the activity levels of animals wearing the FLIDs to nearly match the levels of control animals without implants. Furthermore, by incorporating a platinum-iridium alloy as the top layer material for electrical contact, the FLID realizes exceptional electrical performance, enabling in vivo measurements of both local field potentials and individual neuron action potentials. These findings showcase the potential of FLIDs in scaling up implantable neural recording systems and mark a significant advancement in the field of neurotechnology.

Abstract Dental pulp regeneration is a promising strategy for addressing tooth disorders. Incorporating this strategy involves the fundamental challenge of establishing functional vascular networks using dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) to support tissue regeneration. Current therapeutic approaches lack efficient and stable methods for activating DPSCs. In the study, we used a chemically modified microRNA (miRNA)-loaded tetrahedral-framework nucleic acid nanostructure to promote DPSC-mediated angiogenesis and dental pulp regeneration. Incorporating chemically modified miR-126-3p into tetrahedral DNA nanostructures (miR@TDNs) represents a notable advancement in the stability and efficacy of miRNA delivery into DPSCs. These nanostructures enhanced DPSC proliferation, migration, and upregulated angiogenesis-related genes, enhancing their paracrine signaling effects on endothelial cells. This enhanced effect was substantiated by improvements in endothelial cell tube formation, migration, and gene expression. Moreover, in vivo investigations employing matrigel plug assays and ectopic dental pulp transplantation confirmed the potential of miR@TDNs in promoting angiogenesis and facilitating dental pulp regeneration. Our findings demonstrated the potential of chemically modified miRNA-loaded nucleic acid nanostructures in enhancing DPSC-mediated angiogenesis and supporting dental pulp regeneration. These results highlighted the promising role of chemically modified nucleic acid-based delivery systems as therapeutic agents in regenerative dentistry and tissue engineering. Graphical abstract

Abstract Objective This retrospective longitudinal cohort study aimed to explore the best therapeutic regimen and treatment duration of cough variant asthma (CVA) in children. Methods A total of 314 children with CVA were divided into receive inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) combined with long‐acting beta2‐agonist (LABA) group, ICS combined with leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRA) group, ICS monotherapy group and LTRA monotherapy group. All clinical data were statistically analyzed. Logistic regression model was used to compare the advantages and disadvantages of different treatment schemes at each follow‐up time point and the best treatment scheme. The Cox proportional hazard regression model based on inverse probability weighting was used to compare the effects of different medication regimens on adverse outcomes with asthma recurrence or progression as the end point. Results (1) After comprehensive analysis, ICS + LABA group was the preferred control regimen for CVA within 8 weeks. After 8 weeks of diagnosis, the efficacy of ICS group or LTRA group was comparable to that of ICS + LABA group and ICS + LTRA group. (2) The ICS + LABA group showed a significant improvement in cough at an early stage, particularly at 4 weeks; the symptoms of ICS + LTRA and ICS groups were significantly improved at 36 weeks. The LTRA group alone showed significant improvement at 20 weeks. Conclusion ICS + LABA, ICS + LTRA, ICS alone and LTRA alone can effectively treat CVA. ICS + LABA could improve the symptoms most quickly within 8 weeks after CVA diagnosis, followed by ICS + LATR group. After 8 weeks, it can be reduced to ICS alone to control CVA for at least 36 weeks based on the remission of symptoms in children.

Wireless neural signal transmission is essential for both neuroscience research and neural disorder therapies. However, conventional wireless systems are often constrained by low sampling rates, limited channel counts, and their support of only a single transmission mode. Here, we developed a wireless bi-directional brain–computer interface system featuring dual transmission modes. This system supports both low-power Bluetooth transmission and high-sampling-rate Wi-Fi transmission, providing flexibility for various application scenarios. The Bluetooth mode, with a maximum sampling rate of 14.4 kS/s, is well suited for detecting low-frequency signals, as demonstrated by both in vitro recordings of signals from 10 to 50 Hz and in vivo recordings of 16-channel local field potentials in mice. More importantly, the Wi-Fi mode, offering a maximum sampling rate of 56.8 kS/s, is optimized for recording high-frequency signals. This capability was validated through in vitro recordings of signals from 500 to 2000 Hz and in vivo recordings of single-neuron spike firings with amplitudes reaching hundreds of microvolts and high signal-to-noise ratios. Additionally, the system incorporates a wireless stimulation function capable of delivering current pulses up to 2.55 mA, with adjustable pulse width and polarity. Overall, this dual-mode system provides an efficient and flexible solution for both neural recording and stimulation applications.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to describe the knowledge, protective behaviours, and psychological impact of COVID-19 on Chinese residents in Canada, as the emotional and behavioural impacts of the pandemic have not been intensively studied amongst these populations. It was important to determine whether having dependent school-age children (DSAC) aged 16 or under was associated with adverse psychological impacts amongst the Chinese residents living in the country. Methods In April 2020, 757 eligible participants were recruited through a snowball sampling to complete an online survey related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Psychological, behavioural, and sociodemographic variables were collected and first analyzed using descriptive and univariate statistics. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to further confirm the observed significant associations in bivariate analyses for selected psychological outcome variables. Results Seven hundred forty-two participants who responded to the “dependent school-age children” question were included in the analysis. Most of them identified as females (65.8%) and 77.2% included receiving a university degree or higher. There were no significant differences in COVID-19 knowledge between those living with or without DSAC. However, participants with DSAC were more likely to perceive themselves as being at greater risk of contracting COVID-19 (p = .023); therefore, having a higher chance of adopting protective behaviours (e.g., hand washing, sanitizing frequently or disinfecting work and living spaces (p

Abstract Advancements in microscale electrode technology have revolutionized the field of neuroscience and clinical applications by offering high temporal and spatial resolution of recording and stimulation. Flexible neural probes, with their mechanical compliance to brain tissue, have been shown to be superior to rigid devices in terms of stability and longevity in chronic recordings. Shuttle devices are commonly used to assist flexible probe implantation; however, the protective membrane of the brain still makes penetration difficult. Hidden damage to brain vessels during implantation is a significant risk. Inspired by the anatomy of the mosquito mouthparts, we present a biomimetic neuroprobe system that integrates high-sensitivity sensors with a high-fidelity multichannel flexible electrode array. This customizable system achieves distributed and minimally invasive implantation across brain regions. Most importantly, the system’s nonvisual monitoring capability provides an early warning detection for intracranial soft tissues, such as vessels, reducing the potential for injury during implantation. The neural probe system demonstrates exceptional sensitivity and adaptability to environmental stimuli, as well as outstanding performance in postoperative and chronic recordings. These findings suggest that our biomimetic neural-probe device offers promising potential for future applications in neuroscience and brain-machine interfaces. A mosquito mouthpart-like bionic neural probe consisting of a highly sensitive tactile sensor module, a flexible microelectrode array, and implanted modules that mimic the structure of mosquito mouthparts. The system enables distributed implantation of electrode arrays across multiple brain regions while making the implantation minimally invasive and avoiding additional dural removal. The tactile sensor array can monitor the implantation process to achieve early warning of vascular damage. The excellent postoperative short-term recording performance and long-term neural activity tracking ability demonstrate that the system is a promising tool in the field of brain-computer interfaces.

Background. An outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) epidemic occurred throughout China from December 2022 to January 2023, and the vast majority of those infected individuals were mild. The symptom characteristics of mildly infected individuals in this epidemic wave of the Omicron variant have not been well described. Methods. We conducted a nationwide survey of symptomatic characteristics of nonhospitalized individuals with mild Omicron infection through a WeChat app. Results. Respondents (68.6% female) were aged 18–87 years (42.6 ± 13.1 years), of whom 79.8% were diagnosed by SARS-CoV-2 PCR or antigen test. Of the 19 symptoms predefined in the questionnaire, an average of 7.8 symptoms was reported. The most common symptoms included cough (81.2%), fever (79.9%), fatigue (73.8%), muscle soreness (62.2%), headache (59.2%), and phlegm (55.1%). Painful swallowing was present in 38.3% of the participants and was one of the most severe symptoms perceived by the participants. Also, we found that young people were more likely to have symptoms such as fever, painful swallowing, and headache compared to the elderly population. 36.9% of respondents graded their symptoms as severe, and the severity of symptoms was higher in young people than in older adults, with fever, cough, painful swallowing, fatigue, and headache being the most severe. In addition, women experienced a significantly higher prevalence of symptoms than men, but there was no significant difference in the severity of most symptoms. The presence of comorbidities did not increase the incidence or severity of symptoms in those with mildly infected individuals. Conclusions. The symptom profile of mild COVID-19 cases in the nationwide Omicron wave in China was markedly different from previous reports, featuring a high incidence of symptoms, multiple symptoms, and heavy symptoms. The symptoms of mild Omicron infection cases are not mild and are more pronounced in young people.

Deep tooth decay approaching the pulp may develop into pulpitis; to prevent this, pulp cells need to balance the rapid immune response to avoid rapid swelling of the pulp. Current treatment of deep decay that approaches the pulp involves the application of drugs that induce low‐level inflammation in the dental pulp to promote its repair, but this treatment is sometimes insufficient. However, the unsuccessful treatment often resulted in pulpitis. The C5a‐C5aR is the initial stage of the immune cascade response. Blocking the binding of C5a‐C5aR can slow the immune response in the narrow pulp cavity, so that dental pulp cells have enough time to proliferate, migrate, and differentiate. In this study, we compared lipoteichoic acid (LTA) and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) at different concentrations and time points and used the C5aR antagonist W54011 to block the C5a‐C5aR axis. The blocking effect was detected by analyzing the expression of C5a, C5aR, interleukin (IL)‐6, and Toll‐like receptors 2 and 4 (TLR‐2, 4). Next, we determined the optimal concentration and duration of LTA and LPS treatment in combination with W54011. Based on our results, we selected 1.0 μg·mL−1 LPS treatment for 48 h to generate an inflammatory model of human dental pulp cells. We then regrouped the cells and conducted expression analyses to monitor the expression of C5a, C5aR, IL‐6, and TLR‐4 at the protein and mRNA levels. LPS stimulation for 48 h and treatment with W54011 for 48 h effectively inhibited inflammation and did not affect C5a expression. This study provides a basis for follow‐up studies of W54011 in dental pulp cells.

Recent advancements in neural probe technology have become pivotal in both neuroscience research and the clinical management of neurological disorders. State-of-the-art developments have led to the advent of multichannel, high-density bidirectional neural interfaces that are adept at both recording and modulating neuronal activity within the central nervous system. Despite this progress, extant bidirectional probes designed for simultaneous recording and stimulation are beset with limitations, including elicitation of inflammatory responses and insufficient charge injection capacity. In this paper, we delineate the design and application of an innovative ultraflexible bidirectional neural probe engineered from polyimide. This probe is distinguished by its ability to facilitate high-resolution recordings and precise stimulation control in deep brain regions. Electrodes enhanced with a PEDOT:PSS/IrOx composite exhibit a substantial increase in charge storage capacity, escalating from 0.14 ± 0.01 mC/cm2 to an impressive 24.75 ± 0.18 mC/cm2. This augmentation significantly bolsters the electrodes’ charge transfer efficacy. In tandem, we observed a notable reduction in electrode impedance, from 3.47 ± 1.77 MΩ to a mere 41.88 ± 4.04 kΩ, while the phase angle exhibited a positive shift from −72.61 ± 1.84° to −34.17 ± 0.42°. To substantiate the electrodes’ functional prowess, we conducted in vivo experiments, where the probes were surgically implanted into the bilateral motor cortex of mice. These experiments involved the synchronous recording and meticulous analysis of neural signal fluctuations during stimulation and an assessment of the probes’ proficiency in modulating directional turning behaviors in the subjects. The empirical evidence corroborates that targeted stimulation within the bilateral motor cortex of mice can modulate the intensity of neural signals in the stimulated locale, enabling the directional control of the mice’s turning behavior to the contralateral side of the stimulation site.

Abstract The combination of optogenetics and electrophysiological recording enables high-precision bidirectional interactions between neural interfaces and neural circuits, which provides a promising approach for the study of progressive neurophysiological phenomena. Opto-electrophysiological neural probes with sufficient flexibility and biocompatibility are desirable to match the low mechanical stiffness of brain tissue for chronic reliable performance. However, lack of rigidity poses challenges for the accurate implantation of flexible neural probes with less invasiveness. Herein, we report a hybrid probe (Silk-Optrode) consisting of a silk protein optical fiber and multiple flexible microelectrode arrays. The Silk-Optrode can be accurately inserted into the brain and perform synchronized optogenetic stimulation and multichannel recording in freely behaving animals. Silk plays an important role due to its high transparency, excellent biocompatibility, and mechanical controllability. Through the hydration of the silk optical fiber, the Silk-Optrode probe enables itself to actively adapt to the environment after implantation and reduce its own mechanical stiffness to implant into the brain with high fidelity while maintaining mechanical compliance with the surrounding tissue. The probes with 128 recording channels can detect high-yield well-isolated single units while performing intracranial light stimulation with low optical losses, surpassing previous work of a similar type. Two months of post-surgery results suggested that as-reported Silk-Optrode probes exhibit better implant-neural interfaces with less immunoreactive glial responses and tissue lesions. A silk optical fiber-based Silk-Optrode probe consisting of a natural silk optical fiber and a flexible micro/nano electrode array is reported. The multifunctional soft probe can modify its own Young’s modulus through hydration to achieve accurate implantation into the brain. The low optical loss and single-unit recording abilities allow simultaneous optogenetic stimulation and multichannel readout, which expands the applications in the operation and parsing of neural circuits in behavioral animals.

Abstract Background The effects of a delayed diagnosis of asthma on lung function in children have not been well investigated. Therefore, a retrospective cohort study was conducted in a children’s hospital to analyse the effect of delayed diagnosis time on lung function in children with asthma. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study in Jinan Children's Hospital from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2020. All children were divided into different groups according to the presence or absence of rhinitis, age at first onset (first coughing and wheezing attack) and delayed diagnosis duration (≤ 3 months, 3–12 months, 1–3 years, 3–5 years and > 5 years). Results A total of 1,014 children with asthma were included in this study. The median (quartile) delay in asthma diagnosis among all participants was 11 (2, 26) months. The shortest delay in diagnosis time was on the same day of onset, and the longest delay in diagnosis time was 10 years. The median (quartile) duration of delayed diagnosis was 10 (2, 26) months in 307 asthmatic children without rhinitis and 11 (2, 26) months in 707 children with asthma and rhinitis (P 3 years (P 0.05) on FVC%pred and FEV1%pred. Conclusion Although delayed asthma diagnosis can lead to lung function impairment in children with asthma, lung function can be improved quickly after standardised treatment. Therefore, early asthma diagnosis and standardised treatment are very important.

BackgroundSince the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), public's awareness of infection prevention and control has increased overall, and various prevention and control measures have been adopted. These measures may also have a certain impact on the occurrence of other infectious diseases. Therefore, we collected information on children with several respiratory infectious diseases in Jinan Children's Hospital in China from 2016 to 2022 and analyzed their changes.MethodWe collected data on age, sex and number of cases of pertussis, measles, scarlet fever, pulmonary tuberculosis, mumps and influenza, which were diagnosed by clinical and laboratory criteria, from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2022 in Jinan Children's Hospital in Jinan, Shandong Province, China. Data on the number of people affected by these diseases in China from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention were compared. Then, we processed the data by using WPS Excel 2019 and SPSS.ResultsA total of 12,225 cases were included in this study in Jinan Children's Hospital, which consisted of 3,688 cases of pertussis (2,200 cases before COVID-19 and 1,488 during COVID-19), 680 cases of measles (650 cases before COVID-19 and 30 during COVID-19), 4,688 cases of scarlet fever (4,001 cases before COVID-19 and 687 during COVID-19), 114 cases of tuberculosis (86 cases before COVID-19 and 28 during COVID-19), 449 cases of mumps (340 cases before COVID-19 and 109 during COVID-19) and 2,606 cases of influenza (1,051 cases before COVID-19 and 1,555 during COVID-19). The numbers of children in the hospital with pertussis, measles, scarlet fever, mumps and influenza decreased substantially during COVID-19 in 2020–2022 compared with numbers in 2016–2019, while numbers of patients in China with all six respiratory infectious diseases, including pulmonary tuberculosis, declined during the pandemic. A rebound of pertussis, scarlet fever and influenza was observed in 2021 and 2022.ConclusionsThe study found that viral pathogens such as those causing measles, mumps and influenza all decreased during the pandemic, after which influenza rebounded. Infection diseases caused by bacteria such as scarlet fever and pertussis also decreased during COVID-19, and then a rebound occurred. However, tuberculosis stayed relatively constant.

With the widespread use of macrolide antibiotics in China, common pathogens causing children’s infections, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus (including Group A streptococcus, Group B streptococcus), Staphylococcus aureus, Bordetella pertussis, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, have shown varying degrees of drug resistance. In order to provide such problem and related evidence for rational use of antibiotics in clinic, we reviewed the drug resistance of common bacteria to macrolides in children recent 20 years.

Abstract Background During the process of deep decay, when decay approaches the pulp, an immune response is triggered inside the pulp, which activates the complement cascade. The effect of complement component 5a (C5a) on the differentiation of dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells (DPSCs) is related to dentin reparation. The aim of the present study was to stimulate DPSCs with different concentrations of C5a and evaluate the differentiation of odontoblasts using dentin sialoprotein (DSP). Methods DPSCs were divided into the following six groups: (i) Control; (ii) DPSCs treated with 50 ng/ml C5a; (iii) DPSCs treated with 100 ng/ml C5a; (iv) DPSCs treated with 200 ng/ml C5a; (v) DPSCs treated with 300 ng/ml C5a; and (vi) DPSCs treated with 400 ng/ml C5a. Flow cytometry and multilineage differentiation potential were used to identify DPSCs. Mineralization induction, Real-time PCR and Western blot were conducted to evaluate the differentiation of odontoblast in the 6 groups. Result DPSCs can express mesenchymal stem cell markers, including CD105, CD90, CD73 and, a less common marker, mesenchymal stromal cell antigen-1. In addition, DPSCs can differentiate into adipocytes, neurocytes, chondrocytes and odontoblasts. All six groups formed mineralized nodules after 28 days of culture. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blotting indicated that the high concentration C5a groups expressed higher DSP levels and promoted DPSC differentiation, whereas the low concentration C5a groups displayed an inhibitory effect. Conclusion In this study, the increasing concentration of C5a, which accompanies the immune process in the dental pulp, has demonstrated an enhancing effect on odontoblast differentiation at higher C5a concentrations in vitro.

Abstract Aiming at the problems of high data repeatability, low utilization rate and low construction accuracy of the damaged part model in the remanufacturing process of helical gear parts, a modeling method for constructing a complete part model using local area point cloud data is proposed. Using the local area point cloud data, the complete intact gear part model with the characteristics of the helical gear itself is built. Meanwhile, the damage tooth region model is constructed separately, and the high-precision damage gear model is obtained by model splicing. The coordinate model of the intact gear model and the damage gear model are used for registration to obtain the damage amount model. Finally, through the practice case, the proposed method is verified.

How physicians can get better ratings and more page views in online healthcare communities is an important issue. Based on 38,457 physicians' profiles from a popular online healthcare community in China, we used Latent Dirichlet Allocation model, which is a common topic model, to analyze the non-English text to obtain more doctor's latent characteristics. We found five of the most frequently mentioned topics. In addition to the first topic (doctor's academic rank and practice name), “research ability,” “foreign experience,” “committee position,” and “clinical experience” were included as unstructured descriptions in the doctor's profile. Inferences about physician ratings and page views could be improved if these themes were set as characteristics of physicians. Specifically, in our findings, Physicians' mentions of their “research ability” and “foreign experience” had a significant positive impact on physician ratings. Surprisingly, physicians mentioning more “clinical experience” had a significant negative impact on physician ratings. Moreover, while descriptions about “foreign experience” and “committee position” had a significant positive impact on page views, physician mentions of “research ability” had a significant negative impact on page views. These results provide new insights into the ways in which online healthcare community managers or physicians create their personal online profiles.

In order to study the decision-making behavior of the participating groups in shared manufacturing, this paper constructs a tripartite evolutionary game model of shared manufacturing by manufacturing companies under government regulation mechanism. Using evolutionary game theory, it is to analyze the evolutionary stable strategy (ESS) of the model. The utilization efficiency of government regulatory input and the influence of government nonregulation in the proportion of regulatory income are discussed. MATLAB numerical simulation is used to analyze the influence of different parameter changes on the evolution result. It is concluded that the initial sharing probability of manufacturing companies, the level of trust in the company, the government’s penalties for nonsharing parties, the utilization efficiency of government inputs and the rewards given to the government by the state all play a positive role in promoting shared manufacturing and government regulation of manufacturing companies. The lower the ratio of government nonregulation to the income of regulation is, the more active government regulation is. In addition, the shared income should be distributed reasonably. Therefore, in the shared manufacturing process, all the above factors should be considered.

At present, with the continuous development and great improvement of mechanical manufacturing, processing, and assembly technology, mechanical flow-induced vibration (FIV) with a relatively concentrated frequency domain can be controlled by active and passive noise reduction methods. However, whether it is active noise reduction or passive noise reduction, they all focus on how to suppress the transmission of sound waves and cannot solve the problems of flow leakage, obvious temperature rise, and noise excitation from the root cause. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the location of the primary and secondary excitation sound sources of FIV, the identification of true and false sounds, and the characteristic relationship between flow and noise. This provides a theoretical basis and engineering application direction for the mechanism of noise reduction of FIV. The numerical calculation part of the acoustics in this paper is solved by the hybrid method, and the flow field is discretely calculated by the large eddy simulation (LES) module in the Fluent software. When the calculated flow field is stable, the velocity field of one impeller rotation period is selected to be output as the iterative value of the sound field and imported into ACTRAN for Fourier transform. Then, the sound field calculation is carried out, and the result of the spatial and temporal variation of the sound field is finally obtained. Through experiments, it was found that when the load of the gear pump is 8 MPa, the volumetric efficiency of the optimized circular-arc helical gear pump of the sliding bearing was improved by about 4%. When the rotation speed is 2100°r/min, the arc helical gear pump reduced the surface temperature rise by 2.5°C. This verified that the optimized performance of the sliding bearing in the arc helical gear pump is significantly improved. Through the theoretical model of the temperature rise of the sliding bearing, the phenomenon that the surface temperature of the prototype gear pump was not significantly increased with the loading in the low pressure region is explained.

In the shared manufacturing environment, on the basis of in-depth analysis of the shared manufacturing process and the allocation process of manufacturing resources, a bilevel programming model for the optimal allocation of manufacturing resources considering the benefits of the shared manufacturing platform and the rights of consumers is established. In the bilevel programming model, the flexible indicators representing the interests of the platform are the upper-level optimization target of the model and the Quality of Service (QoS) indicators representing the interests of consumers are the lower-level optimization goal. The weights of the upper indicators are determined by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Improved Order Relation Analysis (Improved G1) combination weighting method and the bilevel programming model is solved by the Improved Fast Elitist Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (Improved NSGA-II). Finally, the effectiveness of the model is validated by a numerical example.

3D technology has been applied in both surgery simulation and guidance in endodontic microsurgery. Treatment options are still limited for vertical root fracture (VRF) in inaccessible areas that require accurate resection, especially in single-rooted teeth. This case illustrates successful treatment based on 3D technology. The literature on endodontic microsurgery of VRF is summarized. A 27-year-old woman presented with periapical lesions and apical root resorption of a maxillary premolar. After endodontic microsurgery was arranged, unexpected VRF was discovered through CBCT. Using a 3D-printed template, the root fracture was precisely removed with minimal damage. A literature review revealed a total of 12 articles published since 1946 on this topic. The 3D-printed template facilitated endodontic microsurgery, indicating reliable location of the root fracture and reduction in iatrogenic injury. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: The carcinogenicity of coal tar pitch (CTP) to occupational workers has been confirmed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, especially for lung cancer. Herein, we explored the dynamic changes of epigenetic modifications in the malignant transformation process of CTP-induced BEAS-2B cells and also provided clues for screening early biomarkers of CTP-associated occupational lung cancer. Material and Methods: BEAS-2B cells treated with 3.0 μg/mL CTP extract (CTPE) were cultured to the 30th passage to set up a malignant transformation model, which was confirmed by platelet clone formation assay and xenograft assay. DNA methylation levels were determined by ultraviolet-high performance liquid chromatography. mRNA levels in cells and protein levels in supernatants were respectively detected by Real-Time PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The number of clones and the ability of tumor formation in nude mice of CTPE-exposed BEAS-2B cells at 30th passage were significantly increased compared to vehicle control. Moreover, genomic DNA methylation level was down-regulated. The mRNA levels of DNMT1, DNMT3a and HDAC1 as well as the expression of DNMT1 protein were up-regulated since the 10th passage. From the 20th passage, the transcriptional levels of DNMT3b, let-7a and the expression of DNMT3a, DNMT3b, and HDAC1 proteins were detected to be higher than vehicle control, while the level of miR-21 increased only at the 30th passage. Conclusion: Data in this study indicated that the changes of epigenetic molecules including DNMT1, DNMT3a, DNMT3b, HDAC1, and let-7a occurred at the early stages of BEAS-2B cell malignant transformation after CTPE exposure, which provided critical information for screening early biomarkers of CTP-associated occupational lung cancer.

In this paper, R wave peak interval independent atrial fibrillation detection algorithm is proposed based on the analysis of the synchronization feature of the electrocardiogram signal by a deep neural network. Firstly, the synchronization feature of each heartbeat of the electrocardiogram signal is constructed by a Recurrence Complex Network. Then, a convolution neural network is used to detect atrial fibrillation by analyzing the eigenvalues of the Recurrence Complex Network. Finally, a voting algorithm is developed to improve the performance of the beat-wise atrial fibrillation detection. The MIT-BIH atrial fibrillation database is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the algorithm can achieve 94.28%, 94.91%, and 94.59%, respectively. Remarkably, the proposed method was more effective than the traditional algorithms to the problem of individual variation in the atrial fibrillation detection.

Abstract Understanding brain functions at the circuit level requires time‐resolved simultaneous measurement of a large number of densely distributed neurons, which remains a great challenge for current neural technologies. In particular, penetrating neural electrodes allow for recording from individual neurons at high temporal resolution, but often have larger dimensions than the biological matrix, which induces significant damage to brain tissues and therefore precludes the high implant density that is necessary for mapping large neuronal populations with full coverage. Here, it is demonstrated that nanofabricated ultraflexible electrode arrays with cross‐sectional areas as small as sub‐10 µm2 can overcome this physical limitation. In a mouse model, it is shown that these electrodes record action potentials with high signal‐to‐noise ratio; their dense arrays allow spatial oversampling; and their multiprobe implantation allows for interprobe spacing at 60 µm without eliciting chronic neuronal degeneration. These results present the possibility of minimizing tissue displacement by implanted ultraflexible electrodes for scalable, high‐density electrophysiological recording that is capable of complete neuronal circuitry mapping over chronic time scales.

PURPOSE/RELEVANCE:Fibrosis and hence capsule formation around the glaucoma implants are the main reasons for glaucoma implant failure. To address these issues, we designed a microfluidic meshwork and tested its biocompatibility in a rabbit eye model. The amount of fibrosis elicited by the microfluidic meshwork was compared to the amount elicited by the plate of conventional glaucoma drainage device. METHODS:Six eyes from 3 New Zealand albino rabbits were randomized to receive either the novel microfluidic meshwork or a plate of Ahmed glaucoma valve model PF7 (AGV PF7). The flexible microfluidic implant was made from negative photoresist SU-8 by using micro-fabrication techniques. The overall size of the meshwork was 7 mm × 7 mm with a grid period of 100 μm. Both implants were placed in the subtenon space at the supratemporal quadrant in a standard fashion. There was no communication between the implants and the anterior chamber via a tube. All animal eyes were examined for signs of infection and implant erosion on days 1, 3, 7, and 14 and then monthly. Exenterations were performed in which the entire orbital contents were removed at 3 months. Histology slides of the implant and the surrounding tissues were prepared and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Thickness of the fibrous capsules beneath the implants were measured and compared with paired student's t-test between the two groups. RESULTS:The gross histological sections showed that nearly no capsule formed around the microfluidic meshwork in contrast to the thick capsule formed around the plate of AGV PF7. Thickness of the fibrotic capsules beneath the AGV PF7 plate from the 3 rabbit eyes was 90μm, 82μm, and 95 μm, respectively. The thickness at the bottom of fibrotic capsules around the new microfluidic implant were 1μm, 2μm, and 1μm, respectively. The difference in thickness of capsule between the two groups was significant (P = 0.002). No complications were noticed in the 6 eyes, and both implants were tolerated well by all rabbits. CONCLUSION:The microfluidic meshwork elicited minimal fibrosis and capsule formation after 3-months implantation in a rabbit model. This provides promising evidence to aid in future development of a new glaucoma drainage implant that will elicit minimal scar formation and provide better long-term surgical outcomes.
