Measuring the proper motion of the emission component in radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) could help to distinguish between the origins of the radio emission and to understand whether the jet production mechanism is the same in radio-loud quasars (RLQs) and RQQs. PG 1351+640 is one of the few RQQs suitable for proper motion studies: it has two compact components on milli-arcsecond scales, a flat-spectrum core and a steep-spectrum jet; both components are >2 mJy at 5 GHz and are well suited for Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations. We compare recent VLBA observations with that made seventeen years ago and find no significant change in the core-jet separation between 2005 and 2015 (a proper motion of 0.003 mas yr-1). However, the core-jet separation increased significantly between 2015 and 2022, inferring a jet proper motion velocity of 0.063 mas yr-1, which corresponds to an apparent transverse velocity of 0.37c. Powerful relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are believed to be originated from the accretion of material onto the supermassive black hole (SMBH)1. The nearby radio galaxy M87 is one of the best examples of this phenomenon, and the recent detection of a black-hole shadow with the Event Horizon Telescope provided compelling evidence for this paradigm2. However, whether the central SMBH in M87 has a spin or not, a fundamental parameter of a BH along with the mass, remains unconstrained by observations since the appearance of the photon ring is rather insensitive to the spin2-4. A clue to this challenge is to trace the long-term evolution of the innermost jet base where the central BH and accretion disk tightly regulate its flow dynamics. Here we report an extensive analysis of the morphological evolution of the M87 jet nozzle based on 170 high-resolution radio images spanning more than two decades. The ensemble of the data reveals a periodic (a period of 11 years) variation of the jet direction with a peak-to-peak amplitude of ~10 deg on the sky. A successful fit of a precession model to the data as well as general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations strongly supports the presence of a spinning BH in M87, inducing a Lense-Thirring precession of a misaligned accretion disk by the frame-dragging effect5. Our results suggest that jet precession with a spinning BH can commonly exist in other more distant AGN but had evaded detection due to the small magnitude and long period of position angle variation.

Li metal is the prospective candidate of next generation anode materials. However, the growth of dendritic Li during electrochemical cycling has severely hindered the practical application of rechargeable Li-metal batteries. Herein, “seaweed” graphene paper (SGP) is designed for 3D matrix of Li metal anode to address the growth of dendrites. SGP has abundantly exposed edges of graphene sheets and realizes ultrahigh density nucleation. Compared with nonuniform lithium deposition on parallelly stacked GP which has been observed by in-situ scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical deposition behavior of Li in SGP manifests as uniformly distributed granular lithium. Significant decrease of nucleation barrier can be observed during the dendrite-free deposition. With the elimination of dendritic Li growth and excellent stability of SGP host, the lithium anode based on SGP can run over 2500 cycles without short circuit and exhibits low voltage hysteresis. When matched with cathode LiCoO2, the full battery also presents stable cycling. There is no trace of lithium dendrite even after 1200 cycles which proves continuously regulating effect on lithium dendrites by SGP host. This work further develops potential application of graphene materials in the Li anode with high reversibility for stable cycling Li metal batteries.

We observed 20 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars at low redshift ($z 1 mJy, including 4 radio-loud quasars (RLQs) and 16 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs), using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 5 GHz. Ten RQQs are clearly detected in the VLBA images, and a compact radio core is identified in eight of them, indicating the prevalence of active galactic nucleus (AGN)-related radio emission in this flux-density-limited RQQ sample. The RQQs and RLQs in our sample have a division at $\sim$30~mJy. The radio emission from RQQs appears to be the result of a combination of star formation and AGN-associated activities. All RQQs in our sample have a 5 GHz flux density ratio of Very Large Array (VLA) A-array to D-array $f_{\rm c} = S_{\rm A}^{\rm VLA}/S_{\rm D}^{\rm VLA}$ above 0.2. The RQQs with $f_a$ (VLBA and VLA flux density ratio $S^{\rm VLBA}/S_{\rm A}^{\rm VLA}) > 0.2$ versus $f_a < 0.2$ show significant differences in morphology, compactness and total flux density. $f_{\rm a}$ of RQQs is systematically lower than that of RLQs, probably due to the extended jets or relic jets of RQQs on 10s to 100s parsecs which are resolved out in VLBA images. Future larger samples, especially with the addition of milli-arcsec resolution radio images of RQQs with total flux densities below 1 mJy, can test the conclusions of this paper and contributes to the understanding of the radio emission mechanism of RQQs, and the dichotomy and physical connection between RQQs and RLQs., This paper has been accepted by MNRAS

We report the high-resolution radio observations of eight Fanaroff-Riley type 0 radio galaxies (FR 0s), selected from the published FR 0 sample. These observations were carried out with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and European VLBI Network (EVN) at frequencies of 5 and 8 GHz with a highest resolution of 0.6 mas. All eight sources show compact structures on projected physical sizes of 0.3-10 parsec. Six sources show a two-sided structure and two sources show a one-sided jet structure. J1025+1022 shows an X-shaped jet structure, which could result from a reorientation of the jet axis due to a restart of the central engine or a projection of a highly curved inner jet, but more studies are needed to examine these scenarios. Proper motions for 22 jet components of the eight sources are determined to be between -0.08 c and 0.51 c. Although most of the sources exhibit flat spectra, other observed characteristics, such as, low-amplitude flux density variations, low jet proper motion speeds, and symmetric two-sided jet structures, tend to support that the pc-scale FR 0 jets are mildly relativistic with lower bulk Lorentz factors and larger viewing angles., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

CsPbI3 perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have great potential in optoelectronic devices due to their suitable band-gaps, but low photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and poor phase stability seriously impede their practical application. This paper reports the synthesis of Ce3+-doped CsPbI3 QDs by a hot injection method. In the presence of the dopant (Ce3+), the highest PLQY of CsPbI3 QDs reached 99%, i.e., near-unity PLQY, and the photoluminescence (PL) emission of CsPbI3 QDs could be well maintained compared to that of the undoped ones. The photoluminescence kinetics of Ce3+-doped CsPbI3 QDs was investigated by the ultrafast transient absorption technologies, which exhibited that the Ce3+ not only increased the density of excitonic states close to the high energy excitonic states (HES), but also provided more emissive channels. Moreover, the radiative recombination rates calculated by the combination of PL lifetime and PLQY further illustrated the Pb2+ vacancies were filled with Ce3+ ions so that the PL quenching of the CsPbI3 QDs could be effectively prevented. The theoretic analysis uncovered the mechanism of the high PLQY and stable PL emission of the Ce3+-doped CsPbI3 QDs.

This paper reports an alternative approach to the evaluation of infrared camouflage effectiveness via a multi-fractal method. By calculating multi-fractal spectra of the target region and the background regions in an infrared image, the spectrum shape features and the discrete Frechet distances among these spectra were used to analyze the camouflage effectiveness of the target qualitatively and quantitatively, and the correlation coefficients of the spectra were further used as the index of camouflage effectiveness. It was found that the camouflaged target had better camouflage effectiveness than the target without camouflage in the same one background, and the same one camouflaged target had different camouflage effectiveness in different backgrounds. On the whole, the target matching well with its background had high camouflage effectiveness value. This approach can expand the application of multi-fractal theory in infrared camouflage technology, which should be useful for the research of infrared camouflage materials, the design of camouflage patterns as well as the deployment of military equipment in battlefield.

Lithium metal is expected to become one of the most high-energy density anode materials for electronic storage device. However, sharp lithium dendrites and accumulated “dead lithium” cause the consume of electrolyte and the reduction in stability for lithium metal batteries and further lead to serious safety risks in the practical application. To alleviate this problem, we firstly construct a uniform and dense amorphous Li3PO4 thin film with thickness of 10 nm via atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating lithium metal as anode. The as-prepared Li3PO4 thin film improves the cycling life of the symmetrical batteries more than double and successfully resists the shock of high current. The growth of needle-like lithium dendrites are obviously suppressed due to film's amorphous characteristics and higher modulus. The artificial SEI layer mainly homogenizes the lithium ion flux on the electrode surface to achieve the purpose of uniform Li deposition.

Because of its proximity and the large size of its black hole, M87 is one of the best targets for studying the launching mechanism of active galactic nucleus jets. Currently, magnetic fields are considered to be an essential factor in the launching and accelerating of the jet. However, current observational estimates of the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet are limited to the innermost part of the jet or to HST-1. No attempt has yet been made to measure the magnetic field strength in between. We aim to infer the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet out to a distance of several thousand $r_s$ by tracking the distance-dependent changes in the synchrotron spectrum of the jet from high-resolution very long baseline interferometry observations. In order to obtain high-quality spectral index maps, quasi-simultaneous observations at 22 and 43 GHz were conducted using the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) and the VLBA. We compared the spectral index distributions obtained from the observations with a model and placed limits on the magnetic field strengths as a function of distance. The overall spectral morphology is broadly consistent over the course of these observations. The observed synchrotron spectrum rapidly steepens from $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -0.7 at ~ 2 mas to $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -2.5 at ~ 6 mas. A spectral index model in which nonthermal electron injections inside the jet decrease with distance can adequately reproduce the observed trend. This suggests the magnetic field strength of the jet at a distance of 2 - 10 mas (~ 900 $r_s$ - ~ 4500 $r_s$ in the deprojected distance) has a range of $B=(0.3 - 1.0 G)(z/2 mas)^{-0.73}$. Extrapolating to the EHT scale yields consistent results, suggesting that the majority of the magnetic flux of the jet near the black hole is preserved out to ~ 4500 $r_s$ without significant dissipation., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. A.; Yu, Chen-Yu; Yu, Wei; Zeballos, Milagros; Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration., We present the first Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the Galactic center source associated with a supermassive black hole. These observations were conducted in 2017 using a global interferometric array of eight telescopes operating at a wavelength of λ = 1.3 mm. The EHT data resolve a compact emission region with intrahour variability. A variety of imaging and modeling analyses all support an image that is dominated by a bright, thick ring with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 μas (68% credible interval). The ring has modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry and a comparatively dim interior. Using a large suite of numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the EHT images of Sgr A* are consistent with the expected appearance of a Kerr black hole with mass ∼4 × 106 M⊙, which is inferred to exist at this location based on previous infrared observations of individual stellar orbits, as well as maser proper-motion studies. Our model comparisons disfavor scenarios where the black hole is viewed at high inclination (i > 50°), as well as nonspinning black holes and those with retrograde accretion disks. Our results provide direct evidence for the presence of a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, and for the first time we connect the predictions from dynamical measurements of stellar orbits on scales of 103–105 gravitational radii to event-horizon-scale images and variability. Furthermore, a comparison with the EHT results for the supermassive black hole M87* shows consistency with the predictions of general relativity spanning over three orders of magnitude in central mass. © 2022. We find that the Sgr A* data exhibit variability that exceeds what can be explained by the uncertainties in the data or by the effects of interstellar scattering. The magnitude of this variability can be a substantial fraction of the correlated flux density, reaching ∼100% on some baselines. Through an exploration of simple geometric source models, we demonstrate that ring-like morphologies provide better fits to the Sgr A* data than do other morphologies with comparable complexity. We develop two strategies for fitting static geometric ring models to the time-variable Sgr A* data; one strategy fits models to short segments of data over which the source is static and averages these independent fits, while the other fits models to the full data set using a parametric model for the structural variability power spectrum around the average source structure. Both geometric modeling and image-domain feature extraction techniques determine the ring diameter to be 51.8 ± 2.3 μas (68% credible intervals), with the ring thickness constrained to have an FWHM between ∼30% and 50% of the ring diameter. To bring the diameter measurements to a common physical scale, we calibrate them using synthetic data generated from GRMHD simulations. This calibration constrains the angular size of the gravitational radius to be ${4.8}_{-0.7}^{+1.4}$ μas, which we combine with an independent distance measurement from maser parallaxes to determine the mass of Sgr A* to be ${4.0}_{-0.6}^{+1.1}\times {10}^{6}$ M⊙. © 2022. This is the only stationary, vacuum, axisymmetric metric, without electromagnetic charge, that satisfies Einstein's equations and does not have pathologies outside of the event horizon. We present new constraints on potential deviations from the Kerr prediction based on 2017 EHT observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). We calibrate the relationship between the geometrically defined black hole shadow and the observed size of the ring-like images using a library that includes both Kerr and non-Kerr simulations. We use the exquisite prior constraints on the mass-to-distance ratio for Sgr A* to show that the observed image size is within ∼10% of the Kerr predictions. We use these bounds to constrain metrics that are parametrically different from Kerr, as well as the charges of several known spacetimes. To consider alternatives to the presence of an event horizon, we explore the possibility that Sgr A* is a compact object with a surface that either absorbs and thermally reemits incident radiation or partially reflects it. Using the observed image size and the broadband spectrum of Sgr A*, we conclude that a thermal surface can be ruled out and a fully reflective one is unlikely. We compare our results to the broader landscape of gravitational tests. Together with the bounds found for stellar-mass black holes and the M87 black hole, our observations provide further support that the external spacetimes of all black holes are described by the Kerr metric, independent of their mass. © 2022. Anton; Zhang, Shuo; Zhao, Guang-Yao; Zhao, Shan-Shan.--This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted reuse, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., We present a framework for characterizing the spatiotemporal power spectrum of the variability expected from the horizon-scale emission structure around supermassive black holes, and we apply this framework to a library of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations and associated general relativistic ray-traced images relevant for Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of Sgr A*. We find that the variability power spectrum is generically a red-noise process in both the temporal and spatial dimensions, with the peak in power occurring on the longest timescales and largest spatial scales. When both the time-averaged source structure and the spatially integrated light-curve variability are removed, the residual power spectrum exhibits a universal broken power-law behavior. On small spatial frequencies, the residual power spectrum rises as the square of the spatial frequency and is proportional to the variance in the centroid of emission. Beyond some peak in variability power, the residual power spectrum falls as that of the time-averaged source structure, which is similar across simulations; this behavior can be naturally explained if the variability arises from a multiplicative random field that has a steeper high-frequency power-law index than that of the time-averaged source structure. We briefly explore the ability of power spectral variability studies to constrain physical parameters relevant for the GRMHD simulations, which can be scaled to provide predictions for black holes in a range of systems in the optically thin regime. We present specific expectations for the behavior of the M87* and Sgr A* accretion flows as observed by the EHT. © 2022. The Author(s).
