Abstract Evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants emphasizes the need for multivalent vaccines capable of simultaneously targeting multiple strains. SCTV01E is a tetravalent COVID-19 vaccine derived from the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 variants Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron BA.1. In this double-blinded placebo-controlled pivotal efficacy trial (NCT05308576), the primary endpoint was vaccine efficacy (VE) against COVID-19 seven days post-vaccination in individuals without recent infection. Other endpoints included evaluating safety, immunogenicity, and the VE against all SARS-CoV-2 infections in individuals meeting the study criteria. Between December 26, 2022, and January 15, 2023, 9,223 individuals were randomized at a 1:1 ratio to receive SCTV01E or a placebo. SCTV01E showed a VE of 69.4% (95% CI: 50.6, 81.0) 7 days post-vaccination, with 75 cases in the placebo group and 23 in the SCTV01E group for the primary endpoint. VEs were 79.7% (95% CI: 51.0, 91.6) and 82.4% (95% CI: 57.9, 92.6), respectively, for preventing symptomatic infection and all SARS-CoV-2 infections 14 days post-vaccination. SCTV01E elicited a 25.0-fold higher neutralizing antibody response against Omicron BA.5 28 days post-vaccination compared to placebo. Reactogenicity was generally mild and transient, with no reported vaccine-related SAE, adverse events of special interest (AESI), or deaths. The trial aligned with the shift from dominant variants BA.5 and BF.7 to XBB, suggesting SCTV01E as a potential vaccine alternative effective against present and future variants.

ObjectivesTo investigate the association between social and psychological factors and the risk of cognitive impairment following acute ischemic stroke.Materials and methodsA prospective study was conducted at Shanghai Tenth People’s Hospital from June 2021 to July 2022. The study focused on social and psychological factors, which were assessed using the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), Self-Perceived Burden Scale (SPBS), and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) within 3 days after admission to the hospital. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment at 3 months post-stroke. Logistic hierarchical regression models were used to examine the association between these three indicators and cognitive impairment following a stroke.ResultsAmong these patients, cognitive function was assessed in 211 cases at the 3-month follow-up after the initial stroke event. At 3 months post-stroke, 118(55.9%) of the participants experienced cognitive impairment, while 93(44.1%) did not. The scores on the SPBS and HAMD showed significant associations with cognitive impairment at 3 months after stroke. The scores of SPBS [scores: 30~39 vs.7 vs.≤7 points, OR=3.287(1.362~7.936); P=0.008]. There were no significant associations observed between SSRS and PSCI.ConclusionEarly screening for depressive symptoms and focusing on self-perceived burden can be beneficial for decision support for clinicians and improve cognitive function recovery at the 3-month mark post-stroke.

Abstract A key limitation of current dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MRI techniques is the requirement for full-dose gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) administration. The purpose of this feasibility study was to develop and assess a new low GBCA dose protocol for deriving high-spatial resolution kinetic parameters from brain DCE-MRI. Nineteen patients with intracranial skull base tumours were prospectively imaged at 1.5 T using a single-injection, fixed-volume low GBCA dose, dual temporal resolution interleaved DCE-MRI acquisition. The accuracy of kinetic parameters (ve, Ktrans, vp) derived using this new low GBCA dose technique was evaluated through both Monte-Carlo simulations (mean percent deviation, PD, of measured from true values) and an in vivo study incorporating comparison with a conventional full-dose GBCA protocol and correlation with histopathological data. Abstract Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) encompasses a diverse range of neurodevelopmental disorders, but the precise underlying pathogenesis remains elusive. This study aim to explore the potential mechanism of TREM2 in regulating microglia function in ASD. Materials and methods The offspring rat model of ASD was established through prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA), and the behavioral symptoms of the ASD model were observed. On postnatal day (PND) 7 and PND 28, the effects of prenatally exposure to VPA on synaptic development and microglia phenotype of offspring rats were observed. Primary microglia were cultured in vitro. Lentivirus and adenovirus were utilized to interfere with TREM2 and overexpress TREM2. Results Prenatally VPA exposure induced offspring rats to show typical ASD core symptoms, which led to abnormal expression of synapse-related proteins in the prefrontal cortex of offspring rats, changed the phenotype of microglia in offspring rats, promoted the polarization of microglia to pro-inflammatory type, and increased inflammatory response. The experimental results in vitro showed that overexpression of TREM2 could increase the expression of Gephyrin, decrease the content of CD86 protein and increase the content of CD206 protein. In addition, after the expression of TREM2 was interfered, the content of p-P38 MAPK protein increased and the content of p-ELK-1 protein decreased. Conclusion The protective influence of TREM2 on the VPA-induced ASD model is attributed to its inhibition of the P38 MAPK pathway, this protective effect may be achieved by promoting the polarization of microglia to anti-inflammatory phenotype and improving the neuronal synaptic development.

Abstract Background While financial toxicity (FT) is prevalent in patients with cancer, young and middle-aged patients with stroke are also affected by FT, which can exacerbate their physical and psychological challenges. Understanding the patient’s experience and response measures can further understand the impact of FT on patients with stroke, to help alleviate FT. However, little is known concerning the experience of patients with stroke with FT or their coping strategies. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the experiences of FT in young and middle-aged patients with stroke and their coping strategies. Methods A phenomenological method was utilized. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 young and middle-aged stroke patients (aged 18–59) between October 2022 and March 2023. The participants were recruited from a tertiary hospital in Shanghai, China. The research team used NVivo 12.0 software. Giorgi’s phenomenological analysis method was used to analyse the interview data. Results The interview results were divided into two categories in terms of patients’ experiences of FT and their coping strategies. Nine subthemes were constructed. The experience category included four subthemes: (1) taking on multifaceted economic pressure, (2) dual choice of treatment, (3) decline in material living standards, and (4) suffering from negative emotions such as anxiety and depression. The coping strategy category included five subthemes: (1) reducing expenses, (2) improving living habits, (3) proactive participation in medical decision-making, (4) making a job position choice, and (5) seeking social support. Conclusions FT in young and middle-aged patients with stroke, which affected their physical and mental health, led them to implement strategies for dealing with FT. The Chinese government needs to broaden the reach of health insurance coverage and advance the fairness of healthcare policies. Healthcare professionals must pay active attention to FT in such patients in terms of strengthening their health education and considering their needs and preferences. Patients need to improve their sense of self-efficacy, actively reintegrate into society, and adhere to rehabilitation and treatment. Individuals at a high risk of stroke are recommended to purchase health insurance. Multifaceted efforts are needed to reduce the impact of FT in young and middle-aged patients with stroke.

Objectives: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a decline in vaccine coverage, and the implementation of combined vaccines and co-administration strategies emerged as potential solutions to alleviate this predicament. Our objective is to delve into the concurrent administration of the sabin-strain-based inactivated poliovirus vaccine (sIPV), the diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP), and measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR), with the intention of bridging the evidentiary gap pertaining to vaccine co-administration in Chinese infants, and to ensure a safe and effective vaccination strategy, ultimately leading to an augmentation in immunization coverage. Methods: This study was a follow-up trial of the “Immunogenicity and safety of concomitant administration of the sIPV with the DTaP vaccine in children: a multicenter, randomized, non-inferiority, controlled trial.” Blood samples were collected on day 0 and day 30, and serum antibody levels were detected to measure antibody responses to each of the antigens. Local and systemic adverse events were monitored and compared among groups. This study is the first to fill the knowledge gap in China regarding the safe and effective combined vaccination of sIPV, DTaP, and MMR vaccines. Results: The geometric mean titer of the poliovirus types I, II, and III neutralizing antibodies were 1060.22 (95% CI: 865.73-1298.39), 1537.06 (95% CI: 1324.27-1784.05), and 1539.10 (95% CI: 1296.37-1827.29) in group I on day 30; geometric mean titer of antibodies against DTaP and MMR in the simultaneous vaccination group was non-inferior to those in the DTaP alone and MMR alone group. Reporting rates of local and systemic adverse reactions were similar between groups and no serious adverse events were reported throughout the clinical study period. Conclusion: Co-administration of the sIPV, DTaP, and MMR was safe and did not impact immunogenicity, which would help to mitigate administrative costs and enhance vaccine coverage rates.

Late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is one of the most serious diseases affecting potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.). Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcripts with a length of more than 200 nucleotides that have no protein-coding potential. Few studies have been conducted on lncRNAs related to plant immune regulation in plants, and the molecular mechanisms involved in this regulation require further investigation. We identified and screened an lncRNA that specifically responds to P. infestans infection, namely, StlncRNA13558. P. infestans infection activates the abscisic acid (ABA) pathway, and ABA induces StlncRNA13558 to enhance potato resistance to P. infestans. StlncRNA13558 positively regulates the expression of its co-expressed PR-related gene StPRL. StPRL promotes the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and transmits a resistance response by affecting the salicylic acid hormone pathway, thereby enhancing potato resistance to P. infestans. In summary, we identified the potato late blight resistance lncRNA StlncRNA13558 and revealed its upstream and downstream regulatory relationship of StlncRNA13558. These results improve our understanding of plant-pathogen interactions’ immune mechanism and elucidate the response mechanism of lncRNA-target genes regulating potato resistance to P. infestans infection.

Abstract SARS-CoV-2 is primarily transmitted through droplets and airborne aerosols, and in order to prevent infection and reduce viral spread vaccines should elicit protective immunity in the airways. The neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) transfers IgG across epithelial barriers and can enhance mucosal delivery of antigens. Here we explore FcRn-mediated respiratory delivery of SARS-CoV-2 spike (S). A monomeric IgG Fc was fused to a stabilized spike; the resulting S-Fc bound to S-specific antibodies and FcRn. Intranasal immunization of mice with S-Fc and CpG significantly induced antibody responses compared to the vaccination with S alone or PBS. Furthermore, we intranasally immunized mice or hamsters with S-Fc. A significant reduction of virus replication in nasal turbinate, lung, and brain was observed following nasal challenges with SARS-CoV-2 and its variants. Intranasal immunization also significantly reduced viral airborne transmission in hamsters. Nasal IgA, neutralizing antibodies, lung-resident memory T cells, and bone-marrow S-specific plasma cells mediated protection. Hence, FcRn delivers an S-Fc antigen effectively into the airway and induces protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection and transmission.

Abstract Background SARS-CoV-2, the agent responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, enters cells through viral spike glycoprotein binding to the cellular receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Given the lack of effective antivirals targeting SARS-CoV-2, we previously utilized systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) and selected fluoro-arabino nucleic acid (FANA) aptamer R8-9 that was able to block the interaction between the viral receptor-binding domain and ACE2. Methods Here, we further assessed FANA-R8-9 as an entry inhibitor in contexts that recapitulate infection in vivo. Results We demonstrate that FANA-R8-9 inhibits spike-bearing pseudovirus particle uptake in cell lines. Then, using an in-vitro model of human airway epithelium (HAE) and SARS-CoV-2 virus, we show that FANA-R8-9 significantly reduces viral infection when added either at the time of inoculation, or several hours later. These results were specific to the R8-9 sequence, not the xeno-nucleic acid utilized to make the aptamer. Importantly, we also show that FANA-R8-9 is stable in HAE culture secretions and has no overt cytotoxic effects. Conclusions Together, these results suggest that FANA-R8-9 effectively prevents infection by specific SARS-CoV-2 variants and indicate that aptamer technology could be utilized to target other clinically-relevant viruses in the respiratory mucosa.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypotensive effect and optimal protocol of inspiratory muscle resistance training (IMST). Randomized controlled trials using IMST to lower blood pressure (BP) were retrieved from 12 databases as of July 2022. A meta‐analysis of BP and heart rate variability (HRV) was performed and a trial sequence analysis was performed using trial sequential analysis (TSA) software. Twelve articles (n = 386 participants) from five countries were included, with a mean quality score of 5.83. IMST achieved significant results in reducing systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure (−7.93 [−12.08, −3.78]; −3.80 [−6.08, −1.53]; −4.90 [−13.76, 3.96]). Furthermore, TSA has shown that the findings for systolic and diastolic BP are conclusive. Finally, considerable variation remained between studies when analyzing HRV. The overall hypotensive effect of IMST was demonstrated by the TSA and was well tolerated in different populations. Of these, two interventions, high resistance or low resistance combined with slow breathing, showed the best efficacy under an 8‐week exercise intervention. In addition, the process of lowering BP by modulating sympathetic vagal activity has not been further confirmed in this study. Future long‐term interventions, especially those over 3 months, are needed to observe the prolonged antihypertensive effects and modulatory mechanisms; controlling for variables such as respiratory rate and executing more rigorous studies to further explore antihypertensive options.

Artificial insemination plays a crucial role in pig production, particularly in enhancing the genetic potential of elite boars. To accelerate genetic progress for semen traits in pigs, it is vital to understand and identify the underlying genetic markers associated with desirable traits. Herein, we genotyped 1238 Landrace boars with GeneSeek Porcine SNP50 K Bead chip and conducted genome-wide association studies to identify genetic regions and candidate genes associated with 12 semen traits. Our study identified 38 SNPs associated with the analyzed 12 semen traits. Furthermore, we identified several promising candidate genes, including HIBADH, DLG1, MED1, APAF1, MGST3, MTG2, and ZP4. These candidate genes have the potential function to facilitate the breeding of boars with improved semen traits. By further investigating and understanding the roles of these genes, we can develop more effective breeding strategies that contribute to the overall enhancement of pig production. The results of our study provide valuable insights for the pig-breeding industry and support ongoing research efforts to optimize genetic selection for superior semen traits.

Abstract SRAM and DRAM memory technologies have been dominant in the implementations of memory subsystems. In recent years, and mainly driven by the huge memory demands of big data applications, NVRAM technology has emerged as a denser memory technology, enabling the design of new hybrid DRAM/NVRAM memory hierarchies that combine multiple memory media technologies to balance memory capacity, latency, cost, and endurance. Two main approaches are being applied to the design of hybrid memory hierarchies: the hybrid address space approach, which relies on the programmer or the operating system to choose the memory technology where each memory page should be stored; and the (only) NVM address space approach, where a faster technology (e.g. commodity DRAM) is needed to acts as a cache of NVRAM to boost the performance. This approach presents architectural challenges such the organization of metadata (e.g. cache tags) and the selection of the proper technology for each memory component. In contrast to existing approaches, this work proposes a memory controller that leverages novel memory technologies such as eDRAM and MRAM to mitigate NVRAM bus contention and improve the performance of the NVM address space. The devised solution proposes a two-level cache hierarchy in the memory controller: a SRAM sector cache and a (x)RAM cache. The (x)RAM cache, much denser, helps significantly reduce the number of accesses to NVRAM. Experimental results show that implementing the (x)RAM cache with eDRAM or MRAM is the best performing approach. Moreover, the eRAM is able to improve the SRAM cache miss penalty by up to 50% and 80%, and overall system performance by 15% and 23%.

The deterioration of the surrounding rock at the tunnel bottom is a damage mechanics issue that occurs under disturbance load. To investigate the anisotropic characteristics of mechanical behavior and the AE response mechanism of layered sandstone, uniaxial compression tests and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring were conducted. The results show that the layer structure causes remarkable anisotropic characteristics in the wave velocities. The strain characteristics and mechanical parameters of layered sandstone exhibit obvious deterioration effects. The local strain and overall strain show a synergistic feature, with the local strain path being more complex and the deformation response being extremely sensitive. The peak stress and elastic modulus both exhibit V-type distribution rules, slowly decreasing first, then rapidly decreasing, and finally increasing rapidly, with the boundary points of the layer angle being 45° and 67.50°. The peak stress and elastic modulus show a nonlinear exponential correlation with the layer angle, and the sandstone belongs to the intermediate anisotropy level. The rupture pattern shows significant anisotropic characteristics, with the failure modes including tension failure, including tension failure I and tension failure Ⅱ, shear failure, and tension–shear composite failure. The fractal dimension shows a negative correlation with the layer deterioration effect. The AE activity exhibits a phased response characteristic to the aging deformation of layer structure. The more obvious the layer deterioration effect is, the longer the AE delay is. The AE intensity of tensile failure sandstone is generally greater than that of oblique shear failure.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a lasting threat to public health. To minimize the viral spread, it is essential to develop more reliable approaches for early diagnosis of the infection and immediate suppression of the viral replication. Herein, through computational prediction of SARS-CoV-2 genome and screening analysis of specimens from covid-19 patients, we predicted 15 precursors for SARS-CoV-2-encoded miRNAs (CvmiRNAs) containing 20 mature CvmiRNAs, in which CvmiR-2 was successfully detected by quantitative analysis in both serum and nasal swab samples of patients. CvmiR-2 showed high specificity in distinguishing covid-19 patients from normal controls, and high conservation between SARS-CoV-2 and its mutants. A positive correlation was observed between the CvmiR-2 expression level and the severity of patients. The biogenesis and expression of CvmiR-2 were validated in the pre-CvmiR-2-transfected A549 cells, showing a dose-dependent pattern. The sequence of CvmiR-2 was validated by sequencing analysis of human cells infected by either SARS-CoV-2 or pre-CvmiR-2. Target gene prediction analysis suggested CvmiR-2 may be involved in the regulation of the immune response, muscle pain and/or neurological disorders in covid-19 patients. In conclusion, the current study identified a novel v-miRNA encoded by SARS-CoV-2 upon infection of human cells, which holds the potential to serve as a diagnostic biomarker or a therapeutic target in clinic.

SMARCA4-mutant lung cancer accounts for approximately 10% of non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLCs), has few effective treatments, and has been associated with a poor prognosis. Our case report describes a 73-year-old man who was diagnosed with SMARCA4-mutant advanced lung adenocarcinoma. Routine driver gene mutation screening was negative, and tumor tissue immunohistochemistry analysis showed the absence of the BRG1 protein (encoded by SMARCA4). In addition to the standard chemotherapy regimens, programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitors were administered. After three cycles of combination therapy, the focus of the primary lung tumor shrunk evidently, but radiological interstitial abnormalities emerged in the basal and subpleural areas of the bilateral lungs. The patient’s clinical condition deteriorated and he was diagnosed with immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-associated pneumonia. Thus, the combination regimen was discontinued, corticosteroid therapy was administered according to guidelines, and nintedanib was added, given that interstitial abnormalities were observed on chest computed tomography (CT). Following the above treatment, the patient’s condition improved, the standard chemotherapy regimen was restarted, and nintedanib treatment was maintained. The patient’s clinical condition continued to improve, and follow-up CT showed significant resolution of the interstitial abnormalities and stabilization of the primary tumor lesion. In summary, we report the case of a patient with SMARCA4-mutant NSCLC, which is generally considered to be associated with a poor prognosis owing to a lack of effective treatments. The patient responded favorably to initial combination therapy with ICIs, although he subsequently developed immune-related adverse events. We also found that nintedanib, a multitargeted anti-fibrotic agent, was beneficial for the treatment of immune-related lung injury and showed potential anti-tumor effects.

In this paper, an equimolar blend of bisphenol A dipropargyl ether and cyanate ester was selected to study the effect of different catalysts on the curing reaction of a bisphenol A dipropargyl ether and cyanate ester blended resin system, and the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the catalytically cured blended resin system were investigated. Acetylacetone salts of transition metals and dibutyl ditin laurate reduced the curing temperature of bisphenol AF-type di cyanate ester, and copper acetylacetonate at a mass fraction of 0.3% significantly reduced the curing temperature of bisphenol AF-type di cyanate ester to less than 473 K. Bisphenol A dipropargyl ether pr-polymerized and equimolarly blended with bisphenol A di cyanate ester and bisphenol E-type di cyanate ester also cured below 473 K under the same conditions. Among the cured compounds of the blended resins of bisphenol A dipropargyl ether with bisphenol AF-type di cyanate ester, bisphenol A-type di cyanate ester and bisphenol E-type di cyanate ester, the blended resins of bisphenol A-type di cyanate ester and bisphenol E-type di cyanate ester have better overall performance. The residual rate of 873 K in air was 38%, and the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and impact strength were 129.4 MPa, 4.3 GPa, and 27.3 kJ·m−2, respectively. This kind of blended resin is expected to be used in the liquid oxygen storage tanks of rockets.

This study aimed to develop and evaluate a new DCE-MRI processing technique that combines LEGATOS, a dual-temporal resolution DCE-MRI technique, with multi-kinetic models. This technique enables high spatial resolution interrogation of flow and permeability effects, which is currently challenging to achieve. Twelve patients with neurofibromatosis type II-related vestibular schwannoma (20 tumours) undergoing bevacizumab therapy were imaged at 1.5 T both before and at 90 days following treatment. Using the new technique, whole-brain, high spatial resolution images of the contrast transfer coefficient (Ktrans), vascular fraction (vp), extravascular extracellular fraction (ve), capillary plasma flow (Fp), and the capillary permeability-surface area product (PS) could be obtained, and their predictive value was examined. Of the five microvascular parameters derived using the new method, baseline PS exhibited the strongest correlation with the baseline tumour volume (p = 0.03). Baseline ve showed the strongest correlation with the change in tumour volume, particularly the percentage tumour volume change at 90 days after treatment (p < 0.001), and PS demonstrated a larger reduction at 90 days after treatment (p = 0.0001) when compared to Ktrans or Fp alone. Both the capillary permeability-surface area product (PS) and the extravascular extracellular fraction (ve) significantly differentiated the ‘responder’ and ‘non-responder’ tumour groups at 90 days (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). These results highlight that this novel DCE-MRI analysis approach can be used to evaluate tumour microvascular changes during treatment and the need for future larger clinical studies investigating its role in predicting antiangiogenic therapy response.

Abstract Accurate vascular input function (VIF) derivation is essential in brain dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI. The optimum site for VIF estimation is, however, debated. This study sought to compare VIFs extracted from the internal carotid artery (ICA) and its branches with an arrival-corrected vascular output function (VOF) derived from the superior sagittal sinus (VOFSSS). DCE-MRI datasets from sixty-six patients with different brain tumours were retrospectively analysed and plasma gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) concentration-time curves used to extract VOF/VIFs from the SSS, the ICA, and the middle cerebral artery. Semi-quantitative parameters across each first-pass VOF/VIF were compared and the relationship between these parameters and GBCA dose was evaluated. Through a test–retest study in 12 patients, the repeatability of each semiquantitative VOF/VIF parameter was evaluated; and through comparison with histopathological data the accuracy of kinetic parameter estimates derived using each VOF/VIF and the extended Tofts model was also assessed. Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV), transmitted by the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius; Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) has been continuously emerging on tomato plants and causing a significant economic loss throughout China. In the current study, RNA-Seq analysis was used to explore the gene expression profiles of B. tabaci Mediterranean (MED) that fed on both ToCV-infected and -uninfected tomato plants for 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours, respectively. The results revealed that dynamic changes occurred in the gene expressions of whiteflies at different time intervals after they acquired the virus. A total of 1709, 461, 4548, and 1748 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified after a 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours feeding interval for the viral acquisition, respectively. The least number of expressed genes appeared in whiteflies with the 12 hours feeding treatment, and the largest numbers of those found in those with 24 hours feeding treatment. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis revealed that B. tabaci MED responded to ToCV acquisition through altering its nerve system development, fertility, detoxification, glucose metabolism, and immune function before it lost its ability to transmit the virus. The number of DEGs, degree of differential gene expressions, expression level of the same gene, involved biological processes, and metabolic functions in whiteflies post the 12 hours feeding, and viral acquisition were different from those from other three feeding treatments, which could be a significant finding suggesting an effective control of B. tabaci MED should be done less than 12 hours after whiteflies started feeding on ToCV-infected tomatoes. Our results further provided a clarified understanding in how B. tabaci was protected from viral acquisitions through comparison of the differential profile of gene expressions in whiteflies feeding on plants that were infected by semipersistent viruses.

With the expansion of protected vegetable growing areas (PVGAs), viral plant diseases have become more prevalent, causing severe economic losses to the vegetable production industry in China. At present, researches on plant viruses mainly focus on plants, but there is only a few reports on the species of viruses in surface water from PVGAs. The surface water samples in PVGAs are representative to a certain extent, which has an important reference value for studying the characteristics of plant viruses in surface water. The purpose of this study was to identify the diversity and the possibility of entering disease infection cycle of plant viruses in water samples collected from PVGAs in eastern China. A total of 144 water samples were collected, and eight plant viruses including tobacco mosaic virus (TMV, 8.33%), cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV, 33.33%), pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV, 6.94%), cucumber mosaic virus (CMV, 0.69%), tomato masaic virus (ToMV, 3.47%), tomato mottle mosaic virus (ToMMV, 0.69%), tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV, 4.17%), and tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV, 5.56%) were examined using RT-PCR and PCR. The species of viruses in surface water varied greatly by location. CGMMV, TMV, ToCV, ToMV, ToMMV, and TYLCV were identified in Shandong, a northern part of Eastern China, whereas only PMMoV was found in Shanghai, a southern part of Eastern China. After healthy tobacco plants were inoculated with the concentrated solutions of TMV, ToMV, CGMMV, and PMMoV, could cause disease in healthy tobacco, indicating that the plant viruses in the concentrated solution have the infectivity, and the plant viruses in surface water have the possibility of entering the infection cycle of disease. The results will improve the understanding of the potential risks of waterborne disease transmission.

ObjectivesTo investigate the outcome and safety of retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial adrenalectomy in the treatment of nonfunctional unilateral adrenal tumors in the day surgery mode.MethodsNineteen patients bearing nonfunctional unilateral 20-40 mm adrenal tumors were prospectively enrolled and underwent retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial adrenalectomy in the day surgery unit of our hospital between June 2021 and March 2022. All patients were diagnosed with non-functional adrenal tumors as outpatients before being admitted to the day surgery unit with their consent. Patient demographics and perioperative data were prospectively documented. The patients were followed up by telephone on day 1, 3 and 7 after discharge and followed up for 6 months.ResultsThe patient’s age was 50.5 ± 11.9 yr (range from 19.0 - 69.0). Seven patients were female. Twelve patients underwent surgery on the left side. The maximal diameter of tumor was 28.3 ± 5.7 mm (20.0 - 40.0 mm). Operation time was 72.1 ± 14.9 min (58.0 - 120.0 min). Mean blood loss was 64.7 ± 50.4 ml (30.0 - 200.0 ml). The gastrointestinal function recovery time was 9.7 ± 2.6 h (6.0 - 16.0 h). Retroperitoneal drainage was removed 24.8 ± 13.3 h (range 18.0 - 72.0) after surgery. Four patients were transferred to the general ward for postoperative management, while others were discharged within 24 hours after surgery. Length of hospital stay was 48.8 ± 13.1 h (38.0 - 85.0h). Hospitalization expense was 24168.4 ± 2910.3 RMB¥ (20844.3 - 34369.8 RMB¥). Postoperative pathology revealed 17 cortical adenoma, 1 pheochromocytoma and 1 lymphatic duct tumor.ConclusionRetroperitoneal laparoscopic partial adrenalectomy for nonfunctional unilateral adrenal tumors in the day surgery mode is safe when strict selection criteria and perioperative management protocol are followed, which has the potential to shorten length of hospital stay and reduce lower hospitalization costs.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a dominant phthalic acid ester in the environment and commonly occurs at high concentration in agricultural soils. Its influence on the soil microbial community has been widely reported, while research related to its effects on microbial structure, function, and interactions in the rhizosphere, a microbial hotspot region in the terrestrial ecosystem, is still limited. This study investigated the response of microbes in the rhizosphere to DEHP contamination. DEHP reduced microbial quantity, shifted the microbial community structure, and enriched the soil bacteria with potential DEHP degraders. Although the rhizosphere can alleviate DEHP toxicity, DEHP still played an important role in microbial community construction in the rhizosphere. Interestingly, some microbes were influenced by the synergistic toxicity effect of DEHP addition and plant growth, and there were significant differences in their relative abundance and alpha diversity in soil treated with both DEHP and planting compared to soils with just DEHP spiking or planting. The genes related to cell motility, metabolism of terpenoids and polyketides, protein families, genetic information processing, and replication and repair pathways changed only in soil treated with both DEHP and planting further proved the existence of synergistic toxicity. Anyway, the impact of DEHP on microbial function in the rhizosphere was important with 52.42‰ of the genes being changed. The change in cell motility, biofilm formation, and genes related to the quorum sensing pathway might affect the relationship between microbes, which play a crucial role in ecosystem function. This was further proven by changes in the microbial co-occurrence pattern. Our results can benefit risk evaluation of DEHP to microbial community in the rhizosphere, which is important for the effective function of terrestrial ecosystems and soil health.

RNA viruses tend to mutate during transmission and host infection, which is critical to viral adaptation and evolution. Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) is a member of the genus Tobamovirus (family Virgaviridae) and an economically important virus with detrimental effects on tomatoes worldwide. Although the ToMV gene sequences have been completed in China, their genetic diversity and population structure remain unclear. We collected 425 tomato samples from tomato-growing areas in three northern Chinese provinces 2016. Reverse transcription PCR results showed that the average incidence of the virus in the field samples was 67.15%, and ToMV was detected in all test areas. The analysis of ToMV single nucleotide polymorphisms in China showed that ToMV was evolutionarily conserved, and the variation in the whole genome was uneven. Pairwise identity analysis showed significant variability in genome sequences among ToMV strains with genomic nucleotide identities of 73.2–99.6%. The ToMV population in the northern Chinese provinces had purification and selection functions, which were beneficial in the evolution of the ToMV population. Although there has been some distribution of ToMV strains in China, the virus was generally stabilized as a uniform strain under the pressure of purification selection. Our findings show how to monitor the prevalent strains of ToMV and their virulence in China and provide useful information for its prevention and control.

Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) in sweet potatoes requires accurate data normalization; however, there are insufficient studies on appropriate reference genes for gene expression analysis. We examined variations in the expression of eight candidate reference genes in the leaf and root tissues of sweet potatoes (eight nonvirus-infected or eight virus-infected samples). Parallel analyses with geNorm, NormFinder, and Best-Keeper show that different viral infections and origin tissues affect the expression levels of these genes. Based on the results of the evaluation of the three software, the adenosine diphosphate-ribosylation factor is suitable for nonvirus or virus-infected sweet potato leaves. Cyclophilin and ubiquitin extension proteins are suitable for nonvirus-infected sweet potato leaves. Phospholipase D1 alpha is suitable for virus-infected sweet potato leaves. Actin is suitable for roots of nonvirus-infected sweet potatoes. Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase is suitable for virus-infected sweet potato roots. The research provides appropriate reference genes for further analysis in leaf and root samples of viruses in sweet potatoes.

This paper presents a process for efficiently recovering palladium (Pd) from spent Pd/Al2O3 catalysts used for hydrogenation reactions, using ultrasound-assisted leaching (UAL). A system composed of H2SO4 and NaCl was investigated under ultrasound-enhanced conditions and compared to regular leaching methods to demonstrate the superiority of UAL. Single-factor experiments were conducted to determine the optimal conditions for leaching, which included an ultrasound power of 200 W, a liquid–solid ratio of 5:1, a leaching time of 1 h, a leaching temperature of 60 °C, H2SO4 concentration of 60%, and 0.1 mol of NaCl. The leaching rate under these conditions was found to be 99%. Additionally, kinetic analysis of the UAL process showed that the apparent activation energy of the Pd leaching reaction was 28.7 kJ/mol, and it was found that Pd leaching from spent catalysts was controlled by diffusion. The tailings were analyzed by SEM, revealing that during ultrasonic leaching, the specific surface area of the spent catalyst increased, the mass transfer rate of the solution was accelerated, the passivation film on the surface of the spent catalyst was peeled off, and a new reaction interface was formed. This improved the leaching rate of Pd and provided a new approach to efficiently leach precious metals such as Pd from spent catalysts.

Abstract Background In recent years, the application of immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy in the first-line lung cancer has showed significant benefit in improving long-term survival. Immunotherapy also has risks of immune-related pneumonitis (IRP) after long-term treatment. Despite the treatment strategy of the IRP has been very clear. However, the mechanism is unclear. Case presentation A 73-year-old male patient was diagnosed with left lung adenocarcinoma IVa, EGFR, ALK, ROS1 negative. The patient received anti-PD1 antibody combined with pemetrexed and cisplatin. After 5 cycles of treatment, partial response was obtained. Subsequently, the patient continued the treatment of anti-PD1 antibody combined with pemetrexed. Before the 7th cycle, the CT found a new lesion in the basal segment of the right lower lobe. It was diagnosed with IRP and pneumocystis jirovecii. The patient did not give trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole (TMP–SMX) and corticosteroids, symptoms and radiological lesions had improved. We describe the report of immune-related pneumonitis trigged by anti PD-1 and monitored the dynamic changes of CD4+, CD8+ T lymphocytes, MDSC and Treg cells in the bilateral bronchoalveolar alveolar lavage fluid. From the point of view of immune cells, the mechanism of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome is confirmed. Based on the current case report and literature, this study proposes a potential mechanism of the onset. Conclusion Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome may be potential mechanism of IRP. This study may improve our understanding of the pathogenesis underlying IRP. We believe the detection and dynamic monitoring CD4+, CD8+ T lymphocytes, MDSC and Treg cells can provide more accurate procedures.

Glioblastoma is a high-grade aggressive neoplasm characterised by significant intra-tumoral spatial heterogeneity. Personalising therapy for this tumour requires non-invasive tools to visualise its heterogeneity to monitor treatment response on a regional level. To date, efforts to characterise glioblastoma’s imaging features and heterogeneity have focussed on individual imaging biomarkers, or high-throughput radiomic approaches that consider a vast number of imaging variables across the tumour as a whole. Habitat imaging is a novel approach to cancer imaging that identifies tumour regions or ‘habitats’ based on shared imaging characteristics, usually defined using multiple imaging biomarkers. Habitat imaging reflects the evolution of imaging biomarkers and offers spatially preserved assessment of tumour physiological processes such perfusion and cellularity. This allows for regional assessment of treatment response to facilitate personalised therapy. In this review, we explore different methodologies to derive imaging habitats in glioblastoma, strategies to overcome its technical challenges, contrast experiences to other cancers, and describe potential clinical applications.

ObjectivesTo determine the stress experience and coping styles of new nurses during Nurse Residency Programs (NRPs) by identifying, appraising, and synthesizing data from the qualitative studies.DesignA systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies.Review methodsEleven databases were systematically searched for relevant publications in March 2022. All qualitative and mixed-method studies in English and Chinese that explored the stress and coping experience during NRPs of new graduate nurses were included. The qualitative meta-synthesis was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations. Two independent reviewers selected the studies and assessed the quality of each study. Meta-synthesis was performed to integrate the results.ResultsA total of 13 studies revealed 13 sub-themes and three descriptive themes: multi-dimensional stressors, somatic and emotional responses, coping resources and coping methods.ConclusionNew nurses faced a lot of physical and emotional stress during NRPs, which had a negative impact on their physical and mental health. NRPs are a critical period for the career growth of new nurses. Effective management strategies must be implemented to improve nurse capacity, meet their needs, improve self-efficacy, and build organizational support, as this can improve the quality of clinical nursing and keep the enthusiasm and stability of the nursing team.

Abstract Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an established, effective therapy against vestibular schwannoma (VS). The mechanisms of tumour response are, however, unknown and in this study we sought to evaluate changes in the irradiated VS tumour microenvironment through a multinuclear MRI approach. Five patients with growing sporadic VS underwent a multi-timepoint comprehensive MRI protocol, which included diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI and a spiral 23Na-MRI acquisition for total sodium concentration (TSC) quantification. Post-treatment voxelwise changes in TSC, DTI metrics and DCE-MRI derived microvascular biomarkers (Ktrans, ve and vp) were evaluated and compared against pre-treatment values. Changes in tumour TSC and microvascular parameters were observable as early as 2 weeks post-treatment, preceding changes in structural imaging. The largest ever investment in shale gas resources has induced potential environmental threats in China. The assessment and forecasting of environmental impacts associated with shale gas production is highly challenging due to the characteristics of high uncertainty, nonlinearity, and complexity. This paper proposes a new hybrid model by combining the pressure-state-response (PSR) framework with the firefly algorithm (FA) and a nonlinear auto-regressive (NAR) dynamic neural network (the PSR-FA-NAR model) to detect and forecast the state of the environment as well as send warning signals for shale gas production. Then, an empirical sample, the Changning-Weiyuan national-level shale gas pilot zone that produces more than 50% of Chinese shale gas output, is used to test the effectiveness of the proposed model. The results show that Changning play will predictably face severe environmental threats imposed by rapid development, and the model is not only able to capture nonlinearity time-series and present cause-effect relationships but is also able to improve the predictive performance and forecasting accuracy. It proves that the PSR-FA-NAR model can effectively address the problems with high dimensionality, complexity, and nonlinearity and provides a practical methodology to quantify and identify the potential environmental impacts of unconventional oil and gas production.

To conduct a clinical study on the safety and immunogenicity of the sIPV when administered concomitantly with the DTaP.MethodsThe study population was divided into three groups: group 1 was the sIPV+ DTaP concomitant administration group, group 2 was the sIPV inoculation group, and group 3 was the DTaP inoculation group. Blood samples were collected prevaccination and 30 days postvaccination, and serum antibody levels were detected.ResultsThis study showed that the seropositive and seroconversion rates of type 1, 2 and 3 poliovirus in group 1 were higher than those in group 2, with no statistically significant difference after vaccination (P>0.05). Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV) severely threatens tomato production worldwide. P27 is known to be involved in virion assembly, but its other roles in ToCV infection are unclear. In this study, we found that removal of p27 reduced systemic infection, while ectopic expression of p27 promoted systemic infection of potato virus X in Nicotiana benthamiana. We determined that Solanum lycopersicum catalases (SlCAT) can interact with p27 in vitro and in vivo and that amino acids 73 to 77 of the N-terminus of SlCAT represent the critical region for their interaction. p27 is distributed in the cytoplasm and nucleus, and its coexpression with SlCAT1 or SlCAT2 changes its distribution in the nucleus. Furthermore, we found that silencing of SlCAT1 and SlCAT2 can promote ToCV infection. In conclusion, p27 can promote viral infection by binding directly to inhibit anti-ToCV processes mediated by SlCAT1 or SlCAT2.

Abstract Background Acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are syndromes of acute respiratory failure with extremely high mortality and few effective treatments. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may reportedly contribute to tissue repair in ALI and ARDS. However, applications of MSCs have been restricted due to safety considerations and limitations in terms of large-scale production and industrial delivery. Alternatively, the MSC secretome has been considered promising for use in therapeutic approaches and has been advanced in pre-clinical and clinical trials. Furthermore, the MSC secretome can be freeze-dried into a stable and ready-to-use supernatant lyophilized powder (SLP) form. Currently, there are no studies on the role of MSC SLP in ALI. Methods Intratracheal bleomycin was used to induce ALI in mice, and intratracheal MSC SLP was administered as a treatment. Histopathological assessment was performed by hematoxylin and eosin, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence staining. Apoptosis, inflammatory infiltration, immunological cell counts, cytokine levels, and mRNA- and protein-expression levels of relevant targets were measured by performing terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling assays, determining total cell and protein levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids, flow cytometry, multiple cytokine-detection techniques, and reverse transcriptase-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis, respectively. Results We found that intratracheal MSC SLP considerably promoted cell survival, inhibited epithelial cell apoptosis, attenuated inflammatory cell recruitment, and reversed immunological imbalances induced by bleomycin. MSC SLP inhibited the interleukin 6–phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription signaling pathway to activate tumor protein 63–jagged 2 signaling in basal cells, suppress T helper 17 cell differentiation, promote p63+ cell proliferation and lung damage repair, and attenuate inflammatory responses. Conclusions MSC SLP ameliorated ALI by activating p63 and promoting p63+ cell proliferation and the repair of damaged epithelial cells. The findings of this study also shed insight into ALI pathogenesis and imply that MSC SLP shows considerable therapeutic promise for treating ALI and ARDS.

BackgroundCOVID-19 has been listed as an international public health emergency. During the pandemic, the nurses were affected physically and mentally when in contact with and caring for patients infected with COVID-19, especially those in intensive care units (ICUs).ObjectiveTo summarize and evaluate the actual psychological experience of nurses caring for patients with severe pneumonia in the ICUs during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsRelevant publications were identified by systematic searches across 11 databases in December 2021. All qualitative and mixed-method studies in English and Chinese from 2019 that explored the experiences of nurses who cared for severe COVID-19 patients in ICUs were included. The qualitative meta-synthesis followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations. Two independent reviewers selected the studies and assessed the quality of each study. Meta-synthesis was performed to integrate the results.ResultsA total of 12 studies revealed 9 sub-themes and 3 descriptive themes: physical reactions and psychological changes, the need for support from multiple sources, and increased adaptation and resilience.ConclusionNurses who treated severe COVID-19 patients have experienced severe work trials and emotional reactions during the pandemic. They have also developed personally in this process. Managers should develop strategies that address the nurse's needs for external support, reasonably respond to public health emergencies, and improve nursing care outcomes.

How LH levels influenced the outcomes of monofollicular IVF cycles using different stimulation protocols was controversial. In this single-center, retrospective study, we analyzed 815 monofollicular IVF cycles between 2016–2022 using natural cycle (NC), medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) or clomiphene citrate (CC) in addition to human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG), with or without GnRH antagonist. A viable embryo was obtained in 35.7% of all cycles. Growth stagnation and premature LH surge are two markedly negative factors for obtaining viable embryos (odds ratios of 0.12 [0.08–0.65], p < 0.0001 and 0.33 [0.26,0.42], p < 0.0001, respectively). NC/hMG cycles are prone to premature LH surge (40.4%), yielding a significantly lower opportunity of obtaining embryos (24.7%, p = 0.029). The administration of GnRH antagonist on the background of MPA resulted in a significant decrease in LH levels (from 2.26 IU/L to −0.89 IU/L relative to baseline, p = 0.000214), leading to a higher risk of growth stagnation (18.6%, p = 0.007). We hypothesized that the abrupt decline of LH might increase the risk of apoptosis in granulosa cells. We proposed a “marginal effect” framework to emphasize that the change of LH was the key to its bioactivity, rather than the traditional “window” concept with fixed cutoff values of a threshold and a ceiling.

Compared with conventional optical microscopy techniques, mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) or imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) is a powerful, label-free analytical technique, which can sensitively and simultaneously detect, quantify, and map hundreds of biomolecules, such as peptides, proteins, lipid, and other organic compounds in cells and tissues. So far, although several soft ionization techniques, such as desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) have been used for imaging biomolecules, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) is still the most widespread MSI scanning method. Here, we aim to provide a comprehensive review of MALDI-MSI with an emphasis on its advances of the instrumentation, methods, application, and future directions in single cell and biological tissues.

Purpose. To analyze the application value of multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment (MDT) nursing mode based on doctor-nurse-integration for stroke patients undergoing emergency intervention surgery. Methods. In this study, a historical comparative study method was adopted. 118 stroke patients and medical staff (9 doctors and 11 nurses) who met the diagnosis and inclusion criteria of emergency intervention surgery admitted from July 2021 to February 2022 were treated clinically according to the traditional medical care mode (TMC group), 87 stroke patients and medical staff (9 doctors and 11 nurses) who met the diagnosis and inclusion criteria of emergency intervention surgery admitted from February 2022 to June 2022 were treated and cared according to the MDT nursing mode based on medical integration (MDT group). Comparison of perioperative time indicators, postoperative outcome indicators, treatment compliance, secondary complications and visit satisfaction between the two groups of patients, and comparison of cooperation satisfaction between the two groups of medical staff. Results. The MDT group had shorter onset—emergency physician’s reception time, arrival at CT room—completion time of CT/MR, notify intervention chamber—arrival time at catheter chamber, admission—femoral artery puncture time, admission—first vessel recanalization time, mean postural restraint time than the TMC group (P0.05); the postoperative disability rate in the MDT group (28.74%) was less than that in the TMC group (45.76%) (P

BackgroundDeep venous thrombosis (DVT) of the lower extremities is one of the common complications for neurointensive care unit patients, which leads to increased morbidity and mortality. The purpose of our study was to explore risk factors and develop a prognostic nomogram for lower extremity DVT in neurointensive care unit patients.MethodsWe prospectively collected and analyzed the clinical data of 420 neurointensive care unit patients who received treatment in our institution between January 2018 and September 2019. Stepwise logistic regression was used to select predictors. R software was used to develop the prognostic nomogram. The performance of the nomogram was validated using a validation cohort of patients with data collected between October 2019 and March 2020.ResultsAmong 420 patients, 153 (36.4%) had lower extremity DVT and five (1.2%) had both DVT and pulmonary embolism (PE) in our study. Logistic regression analysis indicated that age [odds ratio (OR): 1.050; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.029–1.071; P < 0.001], Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score (OR: 0.889; 95% CI: 0.825–0.959; P = 0.002), D-dimer level (OR: 1.040; 95% CI: 1.008–1.074; P = 0.014), muscle strength (OR: 2.424; 95% CI: 1.346–4.366; P = 0.003), and infection (OR: 1.778; 95% CI: 1.034–3.055; P = 0.037) were independent predictors for lower extremity DVT. These predictors were selected to be included in the nomogram model. The area under the curve values in the primary cohort and validation cohort were 0.817 (95% CI: 0.776–0.858) and 0.778 (95% CI: 0.688–0.868), respectively, and respective Brier scores were 0.167 and 0.183.ConclusionAge, GCS score, D-dimer level, muscle strength, and infection are independent predictors for lower extremity DVT. The nomogram is a reliable and convenient model to predict the development of lower extremity DVT in neurointensive care unit patients.

Background: Multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions are widely held to facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, but patient compliance with the MDT recommendations and the impact of compliance on disease outcome are uncertain. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of data from a prospective database of breast cancer patients treated at Shanghai Ruijin Hospital between April 2013 and August 2018. MDT discussions were held for all patients before they started adjuvant therapy. The patients were classified into compliant and non-compliant groups according to whether they received the MDT-recommended regimens. Abstract Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic, progressive lung disease associated with lung damage and scarring. The pathological mechanism causing pulmonary fibrosis remains unknown. Emerging evidence suggests prominent roles of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) of alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) in myofibroblast formation and progressive pulmonary fibrosis. Our previous work has demonstrated the regulation of YY1 in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and pathogenesis of fibroid lung. However, the specific function of YY1 in AECs during the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis is yet to be determined. Herein, we found the higher level of YY1 in primary fibroblasts than that in primary epithelial cells from the lung of mouse. A549 and BEAS-2B cells, serving as models for type II alveolar pulmonary epithelium in vitro, were used to determine the function of YY1 during EMT of AECs. TGF-β-induced activation of the pro-fibrotic program was applied to determine the role YY1 may play in pro-fibrogenesis of type II alveolar epithelial cells. Upregulation of YY1 was associated with EMT and pro-fibrotic phenotype induced by TGF-β treatment. Targeted knockdown of YY1 abrogated the EMT induction by TGF-β treatment. Enforced expression of YY1 can partly mimic the TGF-β-induced pro-fibrotic change in either A549 cell line or primary alveolar epithelial cells, indicating the induction of YY1 expression may mediate the TGF-β-induced EMT and pro-fibrosis. In addition, the translocation of NF-κB p65 from the cytoplasm to the nucleus was demonstrated in A549 cells after TGF-β treatment and/or YY1 overexpression, suggesting that NF-κB-YY1 signaling pathway regulates pulmonary fibrotic progression in lung epithelial cells. These findings will shed light on the better understanding of mechanisms regulating pro-fibrogenesis in AECs and pathogenesis of lung fibrosis.

The institutional environment not only has a great impact on economic development but also has a certain impact on labor agglomeration. This paper explains the phenomenon of labor agglomeration from the perspective of the labor market institutional environment. Taking the labor market institutional environment including social contract environment and labor contract environment as the premise, it is considered that a good labor institutional market can promote labor agglomeration and technological progress can stimulate the agglomeration of highly-skilled talents through theoretical analysis. Based on the provincial panel data from 2001 to 2017, the empirical analysis is conducted to verify the relevant factors through the dynamic spatial Durbin model. The paper finally puts forward some policy suggestions to maintain a good institutional environment of the labor market, including that the local government should continue to improve the labor dispute settlement system, strengthen the protection of labor rights and interests, and enhance the institutional environment of the regional labor market.

The intensive and long-term use of atrazine in agriculture has resulted in serious environmental pollution and consequently endangered ecosystem and human health. Soil microorganisms play an important role in atrazine degradation. However, their degradation efficiencies are relatively low due to their slow growth and low abundance, and manure amendment as a practice to improve soil nutrients and microbial activities can solve these problems. This study investigated the roles of goat manure in atrazine degradation performance, metabolites and bacterial community structure. Our results showed that atrazine degradation efficiencies in un-amended soils were 26.9–35.7% and increased to 60.9–84.3% in goat manure amended treatments. Hydroxyatrazine pathway was not significantly altered, whereas deethylatrazine and deisopropylatrazine pathways were remarkably enhanced in treatments amended with manure by encouraging the N-dealkylation of atrazine side chains. In addition, goat manure significantly increased soil pH and contents of organic matters and humus, explaining the change of atrazine metabolic pathway. Nocardioides, Sphingomonas and Massilia were positively correlated with atrazine degradation efficiency and three metabolites, suggesting their preference in atrazine contaminated soils and potential roles in atrazine degradation. Our findings suggested that goat manure acts as both bacterial inoculum and nutrients to improve soil microenvironment, and its amendment is a potential practice in accelerating atrazine degradation at contaminated sites, offering an efficient, cheap, and eco-friendly strategy for herbicide polluted soil remediation.

The smelting slag obtained through iron collection from waste automobile three-way catalysts was used as a raw material to prepare microcrystalline glass through a one-step crystallization heat treatment. The phase composition and microstructure of the prepared glass were analyzed through X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively. Single-factor experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of crystallization temperature from 900 to 950 °C and crystallization time from 0.5 to 4 h on the physical and chemical properties of the microcrystalline glass. The results indicated that the optimum crystallization temperature and time for preparing microcrystalline glass with glass smelting slag through the proposed one-step crystallization heat treatment process were 950 °C and 3 h, respectively. Under these experimental conditions, the number of crystalline phases of the microcrystalline glass was high, the grains were mainly spherical and columnar particles, the sample structure was dense, and the best results were obtained: the density was 2.72 g/cm3, the water absorption was 1.55%, the porosity was 4.2%, the Vickers hardness was 618 HV, the acid resistance was 2.6%, and the alkali resistance was 0.04%. In addition, the results of the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure indicated that the leaching concentrations of heavy metals such as Zn, Cr, and Pb in the microcrystalline glass were lower than those in the base glass and were considerably lower than the acceptable limits. The microcrystalline glass obtained from final smelting slag through heat treatment can enhance the stabilization of harmful elements. The findings of this study can be applied to the treatment of bulk solid waste.

The effect of the cast process procedure and pouring systems on several typical metallurgical defects for TiAl case casting was studied by numerical simulation and pouring test. The results indicated that gravity casting had much better melt-filling stability and synchronization, compared to centrifugal casting. Misrun defects in the upper edge of the thin-walled outer ring could be removed by increasing the bottom cross runners, and the negative effect of the overheated zone in the thick-walled flange could be reduced by designing a suitable inner-gate structure. The crack induced by stress concentration in the transition zone brought significant challenges for TiAl case casting and the issue would be effectively resolved through structural design and process optimization.

As an emerging diabetes diagnostic indicator and a dynamic change index, HbA1c can not only reflect the average blood glucose level over a period of time but can also well predict the incidence of related microvascular complications. It is important to develop a detection method that can dynamically characterize HbA1c. Silicon nanowire (SiNW) devices were mass-produced using top-down sputtering technology, and a microdialyzer was installed in a SiNW field effect tube biosensor detection system. Finally, the detection system was used to detect HbA1c levels quantitatively and dynamically in experimental rabbits. Various measurements showed that mass-produced SiNW devices have ideal dimensions, stable structures, and good performance. A series of microscopy results showed that the SiNW surface can be functionalized for intermolecular interactions. The addition of a dialysis device can effectively overcome Debye shielding, making the blood test similar to the pure standard test. Finally, the dynamic detection of HbA1c within 40 h was realized. SiNW biosensors are capable of the dynamic detection of biomolecules, and dynamic observation of the interaction between blood glucose and HbA1c provides new ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with diabetes. Therefore, the SiNW biosensor can reflect the dynamic changes in HbA1c in a shorter time, which has a certain potential value in the clinical treatment of diabetes.

Urban resilience, as an emerging research focus in urban studies, is the capability of an urban system to adapt to the uncertainties and disturbances faced by modern cities. Numerical characterization of an urban system’s resilience can be performed with urban resilience indicators. Moreover, as cities evolve with intensive socio-economic interactions, the performances of urban indicators are heavily dependent on the scale of these interactions; these relationships are conceptualized as urban scaling laws. Therefore, this study explores the scaling patterns of urban resilience, analyzing the scaling relationship between different resilience indicators and urban population size, as well as the spatial–temporal evolutions of the scaling patterns. The empirical case is based on 267 prefectural-level cities in China. The results show resilience indicators demonstrate scaling patterns on both spatial and temporal scales. Moreover, the scale-adjusted metropolitan indicator (SAMI) differs from the commonly used per capita indicator. Therefore, the scale needs to be considered when assessing urban resilience performance. Findings in this study indicate that moderate scale enhances resilience, enriching urban resilience theorization and urban scaling laws application. The empirical results in the case study also provide a reference for future urban resilience planning and management.

Background: Infection is the most common complication of Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome (INS) and the main cause of INS recurrence, severe infection and even leading to mortality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors of severe infection in INS children and the clinical parameters influencing prognosis.Methods: Totally 147 children with INS and concomitant infections were enrolled and classified into the severe infection group (SIG) and Non-severe infection group (Non-SIG). The clinical characteristics and auxiliary examination results were compared between the two groups, and the early-warning parameters for severe infection and risk factors for poor prognosis were evaluated.Results: There were 49 patients in the SIG, 98 patients in the Non-SIG. In the SIG, the most common severe infections disease included severe pneumonia (63.6%), severe sepsis (30.6%), septic shock (4.1%). In SIG, Gram-positive bacteria (GPB) were more common, as was respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and the three most common strains were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Staphylococcus epidermidis. There were more steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome and combination of steroids and immunosuppressants in SIG, compared with the Non-SIG (P = 0.000). Patients in the SIG has lower complement 3 (C3, ≤ 0.55 g/L,) and absolute lymphocyte count (ALC, ≤ 1.5 × 109/L) (P = 0.004). Logistic regression analysis revealed that the independent risk factors for severe infections were the combined use of immunosuppressants [95% confidence interval (CI):1.569–463.541, P = 0.023], steroid resistance (95% CI: 4.845–2,071.880, P = 0.003), C-reactive protein (CRP) ≥8 mg/L (95% CI: 43.581–959, 935.668, P = 0.001), and infections caused by GPB (95% CI: 27.126–2,118, 452.938, P = 0.002), influenza (95% CI: 2.494–1, 932.221, P = 0.012) and RSV (95% CI: 5.011–24 963.819, P = 0.007). The patients in the SIG were classified into the survival group (N = 39) and the mortality group (N = 5). Logistic regression analysis showed that white blood cell count (WBC) >15 × 109/L (95% CI: 1.046–2.844, P = 0.033) was an independent risk factor of poor prognosis for these patients.Conclusions: Resistance to steroids, combined with steroids and IS agents, and GPB infections (especially SA) are high-risk factors for severe infection in children with INS. We should monitor CRP ≥ 8 mg/L, C3 ≤ 0.55 g/L and ALC ≤ 1.5 × 109/L to avoid developing severe infection. Accompanied by an increase in ANC, WBC significantly increased, suggesting a fatal infection.
