Abstract: Single-atom (SA) catalysts, as a rising star in the catalytic field, have many advantages over traditional nanocatalysts. SA catalysts have improved catalytic activity, a simple and tunable structure, and obvious active sites, which might provide a good opportunity for biosensing technique innovation. This paper will review the latest research progress of SA catalysts in the biosensing field. In particular, we will emphasize on the biosensing strategies for the determination of disease-related biological matrices (H2O2, biological enzyme, NO) and environmental pollutants (organophosphorus pesticides, heavy metal ions, and volatile organic compounds). Finally, we will provide some perspective and discuss the challenges that SA catalysts continue to face.

Incorporating nano-carbon phases into metal-matrix composites is a promising strategy for simultaneously enhancing electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of metals. Here, we describe the manufacture of novel nano-carbon-aluminum composites by an electro-charging-assisted process (EAP) that show 5.6% ± 1.7% increase in electrical conductivity compared to the base metal alloy. The source of nano-carbon that was used in this study is activated carbon with particle size less than 100 nm. The enhancement is attributed to nano-graphitic structures that extend through the lattice of the metal. Through electron transfer from the metal to the nano-structures the electron density at the interface of nano-crystalline graphite and the metal lattice increases thereby enhancing the bulk electrical conductivity. We identify the important fabrication parameters of the EAP for a reaction system employing a tapered graphite cathode. A high current density of 100 A/cm2 causes ionization and crystallization of the carbon in the liquid metal. The increase in electrical conductivity of the composite is directly related to the incorporation of the nanocrystalline carbon in the metal lattice. The superior performance of these nano-carbon aluminum composites makes them promising candidates for power transmission lines and other applications.

Oxidative stress and inflammation were considered to be the major mechanisms in liver damage caused by clofibrate (CF). In order to obtain lipid-lowering drugs with less liver damage, the structure of clofibrate was optimized by O-desmethyl anetholtrithione and got the target compound clofibrate-O-desmethyl anetholtrithione (CF-ATT). CF-ATT significantly reduced the levels of plasma triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC) in hyperlipidemia mice induced by Triton WR-1339. In addition, CF-ATT has a significantly protective effect on the liver compared with CF. The liver weight and liver coefficient were reduced. The hepatic function indexes were also decreased, such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Histopathological examination of the liver revealed that inflammatory cell infiltration, nuclear degeneration, cytoplasmic loosening and hepatocyte necrosis were ameliorated by administration with CF-ATT. The hepatoprotective mechanism showed that CF-ATT significantly up-regulated Nrf2 and HO-1 protein expression and down-regulated p-NF-κB P65 expression in the liver. CF-ATT has obviously antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. These findings suggested that CF-ATT has significant hypolipidemia activity and exact hepatoprotective effect possibly through the Nrf2/NF-κB-mediated signal pathway.

Carbon dots (CDs) are one of the most popular photothermal agents (PTAs) as a noninvasive strategy for tumor treatment. However, because of the inherent dominant fluorescent emission, the CDs-based PTAs hardly achieve a single photothermal conversion, which causes low photothermal conversion efficiency and poor photothermal performance. In this regard, finding a new CDs-based material system to greatly restrain its fluorescence to enhance its photothermal conversion efficiency is highly required, however, it is still a grand challenge. BackgroundCystatin SN (cystatin 1, CST1) regulates the progression of many cancers and serves as a diagnostic marker; however, its significance in gastric cancer has not been fully elucidated. MethodsWe first analyzed the expression levels of CST1 in gastric cancer dataset in oncomine and UALCAN databases. We next analyzed the relationship between CST1 and prognosis of gastric cancer patients in KM Plotter database and downloaded TCGA GC data to verify this result. We further divided GC patients into two groups according to the level of CST1 expression for GSEA enrichment analysis. Finally, we validated the role of CST1 in gastric cancer by in vitro functional assays.ResultsWe found that CST1 expression levels in gastric cancer tissues were significantly higher than those in normal control tissues and patients with high CST1 expression had a poorer prognosis. GSEA enrichment analysis showed that the main KEGG signaling pathways enriched in the CST1 high expression group were Coagulation, Epithelial-Mesenchymal-Transition, Complement, Apoptosis, Glycolysis. In vitro functional assay confirmed that inhibition of CST1 significantly inhibited the proliferation, colony-formation,migration and invasion ability of gastric cancer cells.ConclusionsOur study shows that the expression level of CST1 correlates with the development of gastric cancer, and CST1 may be used as a diagnostic marker for poor prognosis of gastric cancer.

The pathophysiology of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains unclear, making the diagnosis and treatment challenging. Cardiac oxidative and nitrative stress are strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of HFpEF. Herein, we present a unique three-channel fluorescent probe for evaluating cardiac oxidative and nitrative stress in HFpEF by simultaneous detection of NO and GSH. The probe exhibits a native green fluorescence (probe channel), while the presence of GSH and NO can sensitively turn the native green fluorescence into red fluorescence (GSH channel) and near-infrared fluorescence (NO channel), respectively. The probe clearly reveals that both GSH and NO levels are upregulated in cardiomyocytes and heart tissue with HFpEF. Moreover, it uncovers that the enhancement in NO and GSH levels are closely associated with increased level of iNOS (inducible nitric oxide synthase) and activation of the Keap1 (Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1)/Nrf2 (nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2)/ARE (antioxidant response element) signaling pathway in cardiomyocytes, respectively. This work proposes a promising approach for distinguishing normal heart and HFpEF heart by in vivo noninvasive imaging of both GSH and NO, and greatly contributing to the improvement of the diagnosis and treatment of HFpEF.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains the third most commonly diagnosed cancer, ranking second among the most common causes of cancer-related mortality. Immune checkpoint therapy has recently been shown to have great potential. However, only some patients respond to immune checkpoint blockade, indicating the unmet need for determining the underlying mechanism of colorectal cancer immunosuppression. In this study, we analyzed The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets and found that high expression of PIPKIγ positively correlated with tumor-associated macrophage infiltration. Further loss-of-function studies revealed that silencing PIPKIγ greatly reduced CCL2 expression at both the mRNA and protein levels, leading to weak chemotaxis of cancer cells to macrophages. Mechanistically, PIPKIγ facilitated PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling pathway activation to increase STAT3 phosphorylation levels, thus triggering CCL2 transcription to enhance tumor-associated macrophage recruitment. These findings identify the PIPKIγ signaling pathway as a new actor in colorectal cancer immunosuppression and a potential therapeutic target for this common cancer.

Summary An elaborately designed multifunctional nanoplatform with intelligent and inherent tumor-specific theranostic capacity is urgently desired for highly efficient cancer treatments. Herein, we report a class of compact MnO2-laden black phosphorus (BPN/MnO2) nanostructure for delivering drugs with smart tumor-specific diagnosis and exquisite self-driven therapeutic features. The auxiliary MnO2 nanosheets promote the photodynamic therapy (PDT) of black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) by 3.8-fold through their inherent remarkable hypoxia amelioration. Moreover, BPN/MnO2 shows an obvious 37% photothermal therapy (PTT) enhancement relative to BPNs. Significantly, the multiple-tumor-microenvironment-responsive features of MnO2 contribute to the maximized drug administration on the tumor (≥4-fold drug release of the single acid stimuli), thus reducing the potential side effect of chemotherapy on normal tissues. Besides the spatiotemporally programmable administration of drugs, BPN/MnO2 also provides intelligent MRI and thermal imaging guidance for synergistically enhancing PDT, PTT, and chemotherapy, thus offering an intelligent versatile toolbox for multifunctional nanotheranostic applications.

The incorporation of carbon nanostructures into Al alloys has the potential to further improve the mechanical and electrical properties of these alloys. We report a novel one-step fabrication method of incorporating carbon in aluminum alloys by the application of a high electric current to molten Al metal containing particles of activated carbon at high temperature and under Ar atmosphere. We propose that the mechanism for carbon incorporation is similar to electromigration where the current facilitates ionization of the carbon atoms followed by polymerization of the carbon structures and the formation of graphitic chains and ribbons along preferred directions of the Al lattice. Furthermore, the current induces transformation from amorphous carbon to crystalline graphitic structures that propagate in the metal matrix. The carbon is identified by the C-K edge in electron energy loss spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman and Kelvin probe force microscopy. The stiffness is increased in these samples; hardness, on the other hand, decreases for some samples compared to reference Al alloys with no carbon. The electrical conductivity is superior to that of Al-carbon nanotube composites previously reported. The enhanced properties of Al covetics show potential for naval and aerospace applications and power transmission lines.

Receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 (ROR2) is a transmembrane receptor that has a complex role in cancer, acting either to promote or inhibit tumor progression in different tumor types. The effect of ROR2 on gastric cancer is unclear.Immunohistochemistry was used to investigate the role of ROR2 in the prognosis of gastric cancer. Transwell assay and a BALB/c nude mice pulmonary metastasis model were used to ascertain the role of ROR2 in promoting metastasisROR2 was found to be upregulated in gastric cancer tissues, which was correlated with poor disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in gastric cancer patients. Moreover, ROR2 promoted gastric cancer cell migratory and invasive behaviorsWe report for the first time that ROR2 is upregulated in gastric cancer, promotes metastasis, and is associated with poor prognosis in gastric cancer. The findings suggest that ROR2 may be a promising prognostic predictor for gastric cancer. Silencing the JNK1/2-c-JUN pathway, thereby inhibiting MMP3 expression, may serve as a promising strategy to inhibit gastric cancer progression.

Background To investigate the roles of the transcription factors twist family bHLH transcription factor 1 (TWIST1), twist family bHLH transcription factor 2 (TWIST2), and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) in the progression of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Methods The protein levels of TWIST1, TWIST2 and PPARγ were determined in the serum of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients and healthy controls by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). An in vivo model for fatty liver was established by feeding C57BL/6 J mice a high-fat diet (HFD). An in vitro model of steatosis was established by treating LO-2 cells with oleic acid (OA). RNA sequencing was performed on untreated and OA-treated LO-2 cells followed by TWIST1, TWIST2 and PPARγ gene mRNA levels analysis, Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment and pathway analysis. Results The TWIST2 serum protein levels decreased significantly in all fatty liver groups (P P = 0.0018). The interleukin (IL)-17 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling pathways were enriched in OA-treated cells. Conclusions The results provide evidence that the TWIST2 and PPAR signaling pathways are important in NAFLD and shed light on a potential mechanism of steatosis.

Backgrounds: To describe the clinical characteristics of coronavirus disease 2019 hospitalized patients and further analyze the potential risk factors related to the severity of the disease and 28-day mortality of patients.Methods: A total of 122 coronavirus disease 2019 patients hospitalized in Wuhan Third Hospital from 26 January 2020 to 16 March 2020 were included in this retrospective study. Clinical data of patients were retrospectively analyzed, and the risk factors associated with disease severity and 28-day mortality were screened by cox regression analysis.Results: Of all 122 patients, the median age was 64 years old (interquartile range, 57- 71 years old).Compared with non-severe patients, severe patients had higher indices like cardiac troponin T and respiratory rate. In cox regression analysis, cardiac troponin T correlated with 28-day mortality most.Conclusions: Abnormal cardiac troponin T value after admission were in strong correlation with 28-day survival status.

In this work, we present an ultra-low-cost smartphone device for in situ quantification of OP poisoning severity. The performance of the lens-less smartphone spectrum apparatus (LeSSA) is evaluated using standard human Interleukin-6 (IL-6) immunoassay kits. Upon dose-response curve fitting, LeSSA demonstrates an accuracy of 99.5%. The limit of detection (LOD) of LeSSA was evaluated through comparison of 6.4 pg/ml with standard laboratory grade UV–vis spectrophotometer at 5.5 pg/ml. Evaluating the capacity of LeSSA in spike solution by combining plasma cholinesterase (PChE) and human plasma shows consistency at agreement of 97.6% between LeSSA and the laboratory instrument. For application demonstration, the activity of PChE for 24 agricultural workers’ plasma samples was measured with LeSSA, showing exceptional agreement (r2 = 0.92) with the laboratory instrument reference. In addition to near laboratory grade accuracy, the total manufacturing cost of LeSSA is only $20 USD highlighting it’s affordability. With LeSSA, clinicians can evaluate OP poisoning severity without the need to transport patient samples to facilities at far distances. Utilizing LeSSA, immediate results can be used for administration of appropriate treatment.

The global effort against the COVID-19 pandemic dictates that routine quantitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies is vital for assessing immunity following periodic revaccination against new viral variants. Here, we report a dual-detection fluorescent immunochromatographic assay (DFIA), with a built-in self-calibration process, that enables rapid quantitative detection of neutralizing antibodies that block binding between the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Thus, this assay is based on the inhibition of binding between ACE2 and the RBD of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein by neutralizing antibodies, and the affinity of anti-human immunoglobulins for these neutralizing antibodies. Our self-calibrating DFIA shows improved precision and sensitivity with a wider dynamic linear range, due to the incorporation of a ratiometric algorithm of two-reverse linkage signals responding to an analyte. This was evident by the fact that no positive results (0/14) were observed in verified negative samples, while 22 positives were detected in 23 samples from verified convalescent plasma. A comparative analysis of the ability to detect neutralizing antibodies in 266 clinical serum samples including those from vaccine recipients, indicated that the overall percent agreement between DFIA and the commercial ELISA kit was 90.98%. Thus, the proposed DFIA provides a more reliable and accurate rapid test for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infections and vaccinations in the community. Therefore, the DFIA based strategy for detecting biomarkers, which uses a ratiometric algorithm based on affinity and inhibition reactions, may be applied to improve the performance of immunochromatographic assays.

Our aim was to identify plasma microRNA (miRNA)-based signatures to predict 3-year postoperative recurrence risk for patients with stage II and III gastric cancer (GC), so as to provide insights for individualized adjuvant therapy. Plasma miRNA expression was investigated in three phases, involving 407 patients recruited from three centers. ABI miRNA microarray and TaqMan Low Density Array were adopted in the discovery phase to identify potential miRNAs. Quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction was used to assess the expression of selected miRNAs. Logistic regression models were constructed in the training set (n = 170) and validated in the validation set (n = 169). Receiver operating characteristic analyses, survival analyses and subgroup analyses were further used to assess the accuracy of the models. We identified a 7 miRNA classifier and 7miR + pathological factors index that provided high predictive accuracy of GC recurrence (area under the curve = 0.725 and 0.841 in the training set; and 0.627 and 0.771 in the validation set). High-risk patients defined by the signatures had significantly shorter disease-free survival and overall survival than low-risk patients. The 7 miRNA classifier is an independent prognostic factor, and could add predictive value to traditional prognostic factors. Subgroup analyses revealed the satisfactory performance persisted regardless of stage, and the two models both displayed high accuracy in stage IIA patients. In conclusion, identified microRNA signature may potentially provide some additional benefit for prediction of disease recurrence in patients with stage II and III GC.

Vulnerable atherosclerotic (AS) plaque is the major cause of cardiovascular death. However, clinical methods cannot directly identify the vulnerable AS plaque at molecule level. Herein, osteopontin antibody (OPN Ab) and NIR fluorescence molecules of ICG co-assembled Ti3 C2 nanosheets are reported as an advanced nanoprobe (OPN Ab/Ti3 C2 /ICG) with enhanced photoacoustic (PA) performance for direct and non-invasive in vivo visual imaging of vulnerable AS plaque. The designed OPN Ab/Ti3 C2 /ICG nanoprobes successfully realize obvious NIR fluorescence imaging toward foam cells as well as the vulnerable AS plaque slices. After intravenous injection of OPN Ab/Ti3 C2 /ICG nanoprobes into AS model mice, in vivo imaging results show a significantly enhanced PA signal in the aortic arch accumulated with vulnerable plaque, well indicating the remarkable feasibility of OPN Ab/Ti3 C2 /ICG nanoprobes to distinguish the vulnerable AS plaque. The proposed OPN Ab/Ti3 C2 /ICG nanoprobes not only overcome the clinical difficulty to differentiate vulnerable plaque, but also achieve the non-invasively specific in vivo imaging of vulnerable AS plaque at molecule level, greatly promoting the innovation of cardiovascular diagnosis technology.

Background Emerging evidence suggests that metabolic alterations are a hallmark of cancer cells and contribute to tumor initiation and development. Cancer cells primarily utilize aerobic glycolysis (the Warburg effect) to produce energy and support anabolic growth. The type Iγ phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinase (PIPKIγ) is profoundly implicated in tumorigenesis, however, little is known about its role in reprogrammed energy metabolism. Methods Loss- and gain-of-function studies were applied to determine the oncogenic roles of PIPKIγ in colorectal cancer. Transcriptome analysis, real-time qPCR, immunohistochemical staining, Western blotting, and metabolic analysis were carried out to uncover the cellular mechanism of PIPKIγ. Findings In this study, we showed that PIPKIγ was frequently upregulated in colorectal cancer and predicted a poor prognosis. Genetic silencing of pan-PIPKIγ suppressed cell proliferation and aerobic glycolysis of colorectal cancer. In contrast, the opposite effects were observed by overexpression of PIPKIγ_i2. Importantly, PIPKIγ-induced prolific effect was largely glycolysis-dependent. Mechanistically, PIPKIγ facilitated activation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathways to upregulate c-Myc and HIF1α levels, which regulate expression of glycolytic enzymes to enhance glycolysis. Moreover, pharmacological inhibition by PIPKIγ activity with the specific inhibitor UNC3230 significantly inhibited colorectal cancer glycolysis and tumor growth. Interpretation Our findings reveal a new regulatory role of PIPKIγ in Warburg effect and provide a key contributor in colorectal cancer metabolism with potential therapeutic potentials. 3106 Background: WX390 is a high potent PI3K-mTOR dual inhibitor targeting pan-PI3K and mTOR. WX390 exhibited anti-tumor activity and high potency in xenograft models with inhibition of AKT phosphorylation. Methods: Patients (pts) with advanced lymphoma and solid tumors who have failed standard therapies were enrolled in dose escalation cohorts and received WX390 administered daily orally in 28-day cycles until confirmed progressive disease, intolerable toxicity or withdrawal of consent. Plasma samples were collected up to 7 days after the first dose and up to 24 hours at C1D28. Results: As of the cut-off date 2021 Feb 10, 25 patients (median age 52 years) were enrolled in 6 dose levels (0.1mg, 0.2mg, 0.4mg, 0.7mg, 1.1mg and 1.4mg) of the dose-escalation cohorts. Cohorts 0.1 mg to 1.1 mg were completed without dose-limiting toxicities (DLT), cohort 1.4 mg was completed with 1 DLT (Diabetic ketoacidosis combined with grade 3 hyperglycemia) out of 4 evaluable patients. Common treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) (all grades, ≥20%) included hyperglycemia (20 pts, 80%), proteinuria (10 pts, 40%), creatinine increased (11 pts, 44%), hypophosphatemia (10 pts, 25%), anemia (8 pts, 33.3%), thrombocytopenia (7 pts, 29.2%), and aspartate aminotransferase increased (25%). Grade≥3 TRAEs were hyperglycemia (7 pts, 28%, 1 pt combined with diabetic ketoacidosis), hypophosphatemia (2 pts, 8%), neutropenia (2 pts, 8%), dermatitis (1 pt, 4%), and maculopapular rash (1 pt, 4%). PK showed fast absorption (Tmax 0.5-4 h) and dose proportionality for Cmax and AUC0-∞. The mean multiple dose T1/2 was approximately 12.4 hours across all cohorts with minimum accumulation. Among 14 tumor response evaluable patients, there were 3 patients with confirmed PIK3CA mutation. All 3 patients experienced tumor shrinkage and were still on treatment by the cut-off date. 2 (1 pt with head and neck cancer and 1 pt with cervical cancer) of them have achieved partial response (PR). The head and neck cancer patient (PR) was treated with WX390 0.7mg/day without any severe AE and the duration of response was beyond 15 months. Stable disease (SD) was observed in 6 patients (n = 5 with unknown PIK3CA mutation status and n = 1 with confirmed PIK3CA mutation). Of note, 1 patient (follicular lymphoma) treated with 0.1mg experienced SD for 14 months. Another patient (SD, head and neck cancer with PIK3CA mutation) experienced tumor shrinkage for more than 8 months and was still receiving WX390 treatment by the cut-off date. Conclusions: the PI3K-mTOR dual inhibitor WX390 was well tolerated with manageable safety profile, and showed encouraging antitumor activity. A RP2D of 1.1 mg qd is selected to be explored for different indications in solid tumor clinical studies. Clinical trial information: NCT03730142.

Hypoxia and dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified as crucial factors in carcinogenesis. However, the potential mechanisms of HIF-1α and miR-421 in gastric cancer have not been well elucidated. In this study, we found that miR-421 was up-regulated by HIF-1α. Overexpression of miR-421 promoted metastasis, inhibited apoptosis, and induced cisplatin resistance in gastric cancer in vivo and in vitro. E-cadherin and caspase-3 were identified as targets of miR-421. Besides, relative mRNA expression of miR-421 was significantly increased in gastric cancer tumor tissues compared with non-tumor tissues in a cohort of gastric cancer specimens (n=107). The expression of miR-421 was higher in advanced gastric cancers compared with localized ones. Moreover, Kaplan-Meier analysis illustrated that those patients with low levels of miR-421 had a significant longer overall survival (p = 0.006) and time to relapse (p = 0.007). Therefore, miR-421 could serve as an important prognostic marker and a potential molecular target for therapy in gastric cancer.

We present a smartphone optosensing platform (SOP) using a digital versatile disc (DVD) diffraction grating for rapid in-field detecting neurotoxins. The smartphone holder and sample holder were 3D printed for the SOP. A DVD grating is demonstrated for the first time in a low-cost miniature spectrometer on the SOP to quantify the concentrations of neurotoxins. The SOP is capable of detecting optical absorbance spectra within the entire visible spectral range from 400 to 700 nm with the spectral resolution of 0.2521 nm/pixel. We demonstrated the performance of the DVD grating compared with a commercial transmission grating on the SOP and a conventional microplate reader. Paraoxon, as the selected neurotoxin model, is assayed by two types of cholinesterase (ChE) on our SOP, respectively. Integrating a DVD grating in the SOP allows quantification of paraoxon in the range from 5 nM to 25 μM with the detection limit of 2.9 nM. Cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells represent a realistic approach in cancer immunotherapy with confirmed survival benefits in the context of metastatic solid tumors. However, therapeutic effects are limited to a fraction of patients. In this study, immune-resistance elements and ideal combination therapies were explored. Initially, phenotypic analysis was performed to document CD3, CD56, NKG2D, DNAM-1, PD-L1, PD-1, CTLA-4, TIM-3, 2B4, and LAG-3 on CIK cells. Upon engagement of CIK cells with the tumor cells, expression of PD-1 on CIK cells and PD-L1 on both cells were up-regulated. Over-expression of PD-L1 levels on tumor cells via lentiviral transduction inhibited tumoricidal activity of CIK cells, and neutralizing of PD-L1/PD-1 signaling axis could enhance their tumor-killing effect. Conversely, blockade of NKG2D, a major activating receptor of CIK cells, largely caused dysfunction of CIK cells. Functional study showed an increase of NKG2D levels along with PD-L1/PD-1 blockade in the presence of other immune effector molecule secretion. Additionally, combined therapy of CIK infusion and PD-L1/PD-1 blockade caused a delay of in vivo tumor growth and exhibited a survival advantage over untreated mice. These results provide a preclinical proof-of-concept for simultaneous PD-L1/PD-1 pathways blockade along with CIK infusion as a novel immunotherapy for unresectable cancers.

This work investigates the role of a carbon nanophase on the local mechanical behavior of nano-carbon metal composites (NCMCs) produced through an electrocharge-assisted process. Nanoindentation experiments on single crystal Al, Al 1350 parent alloys, and Al 1350 NCMCs revealed variable mechanical properties, caused by an interplay between microstructure and graphitic reinforcements. TEM and AFM studies also reveal nanoscale structural changes based on the incorporation of a carbon nanophase. In order to decouple the effects of the aforementioned mechanical behaviors, molecular dynamics nanoindentation simulations were performed on the (111) surface of Al and Al NCMC samples containing semi-infinite graphene nanoribbons to examine the evolution of plasticity over time. Findings indicate that the arrangement of a finite graphene nanophase within a host matrix can alter plasticity mechanisms and therefore yield strength in near-surface mechanical behaviors with little effect on elastic properties. This understanding should enable further study into tunable bulk properties of Al-based NCMCs while isolating microstructural effects and reinforcement effects of the carbon phase. Such an understanding could lead to application-specific material geometries ranging from high-performing vehicle structures to next-generation electrical devices.
