Abstract

Finding water resources is a crucial objective of lunar missions. However, both hydroxyl (OH) and natural water (H2O) have been reported to be scarce on the Moon. We propose a potential method for obtaining water on the Moon through H2O formation via endogenous reactions in lunar regolith (LR), specifically through the reaction FeO/Fe2O3 + H → Fe + H2O. This process is demonstrated using LR samples brought back by the Chang’E-5 mission. FeO and Fe2O3 are lunar minerals containing Fe oxides. Hydrogen (H) retained in lunar minerals from the solar wind can be used to produce water. The results of this study reveal that 51–76 mg of H2O can be generated from 1 g of LR after melting at temperatures above 1,200 K. This amount is ∼10,000 times the naturally occurring OH and H2O on the Moon. Among the five primary minerals in LR returned by the Chang’E-5 mission, FeTiO3 ilmenite contains the highest amount of H, owing to its unique lattice structure with sub-nanometer tunnels. For the first time, in situ heating experiments using a transmission electron microscope reveal the concurrent formation of Fe crystals and H2O bubbles. Electron irradiation promotes the endogenous redox reaction, which is helpful for understanding the distribution of OH on the Moon. Our findings suggest that the hydrogen retained in LR is a significant resource for obtaining H2O on the Moon, which is helpful for establishing a scientific research station on the Moon.

Abstract

Abstract Studying complex relaxation behaviors is of critical importance for understanding the nature of glasses. Here we report a Kovacs-like memory effect in glasses, manifested by non-monotonic stress relaxation during two-step high-to-low strains stimulations. During the stress relaxation process, if the strain jumps from a higher state to a lower state, the stress does not continue to decrease, but increases first and then decreases. The memory effect becomes stronger when the atomic motions become highly collective with a large activation energy, e.g. the strain in the first stage is larger, the temperature is higher, and the stimulation is longer. The physical origin of the stress memory effect is studied based on the relaxation kinetics and the in-situ synchrotron X-ray experiments. The stress memory effect is probably a universal phenomenon in different types of glasses.

Abstract

The influence of P content on Curie temperature, magnetic properties and microstructures of Fe81.5Si3B10+xP3.5−xC0.2Cu0.8Nb1 (x = 0, 1, 2, and 3 at.%) alloys subjected to magnetic field annealing has been studied. Here, the decrease in P content can improve Curie temperature of alloys from about 575 to 584 K, which increases the operating temperature of magnetic device. Via optimal field annealing technique, the amorphous alloy with x = 3 exhibits good soft magnetic properties, including saturation magnetic flux density of 1.53 T, high effective permeability above 12,000, low coercivity below 3 A/m, and low core loss around 0.18 W/kg. The hysteresis loops show that tuning down the content of P relative to B can increase the saturation magnetic flux density of alloy system. Besides, the investigation about the microstructures of alloys annealed at optimal conditions indicates that longitudinal magnetic field annealing can improve the stability of amorphous phase, thereby ensuring the amorphous structure annealed at a higher annealing temperature compared with the general annealing for alloys.

Abstract

The epoxy/acrylic rubber (ACM)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites have been prepared by simple solvent blending. The morphologies, storage modulus, glass transition temperatures, and physical properties have been investigated systematically. The decreased sizes and increased numbers of the epoxy domains in the epoxy/ACM blends were observed with the incorporation of MMT. The crosslinked epoxy/ACM binary blends show partially miscible phase structure, while the epoxy/ACM/MMT nanocomposites exhibit a more complete phase-separated behavior and an increased T g of epoxy phase. It was found that the catalytic effect of MMT on the crosslinking reaction of epoxy resin accounts for the more complete separation of the two phases. A novel crosslinking induced clay exfoliation has been observed for the ternary nanocomposites. More surprisingly, a synergistic effect of MMT on both toughness and tensile modulus of epoxy/ACM blend were observed, probably originated from the fine domain sizes and appropriate interface-dispersed MMT platelets in the ternary nanocomposites. The fabricated materials have been used as the adhesive films for polyimide films and copper foils. The adhesive strength of the binary epoxy/ACM blends was found to be dependent on the thickness of the adhesive films. Moreover, a preferable increment in the adhesive property of epoxy/ACM/3 wt% MMT adhesive film was observed, resulting from the synergistic effect of the fine degree of crosslinking and tearing fracture of the adhesive film.
