This study optimized the slope and slope length factor (LS) and crop management factor (P) of the RUSLE model and then introduced the gravity centre model to analyze the spatial–temporal variation patterns of soil erosion in Yellow River Basin from a new perspective. Results showed that: (1) The improved model of RUSLE with optimized factors of LS and P had better applicability in Yellow River Basin; (2) The average erosion intensity was 2777.5 t/a, which belonged to moderate erosion. The soil erosion intensity of the Yellow River Basin showed an overall trend of increasing firstly (1990–2005) and then decreasing (2005–2015). (3) During 1990–2015, the gravity centre of soil erosion moved to the southwest, indicating that the increment and increasing rate of soil erosion in the southwest parts of the Yellow River Basin were greater than that in the northeast parts. (4) The intensity of soil erosion aggravated with the increasing slope. The sandy soil, chestnut soil, light-grey calcium soil and fluvo aquic soil had severe erosion intensity due to the regional climate and their own physical–chemical structure. The woodland and shrubbery land were more susceptible to soil erosion.

There were dramatic changes in the ecological vulnerability (EV) of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) region due to the effects of climate change and human activity. Obtaining field observation and statistical data for the evaluation of the EV of the CPEC region is difficult due to its transnational status. This study proposes a novel remote sensing ecological vulnerability index (RSEVI) based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), STRM3, DMSP-OLS, and NPP-VIIRS products. The RSEVI index was applied to the CPEC region to investigate the spatiotemporal changes in EV and the influencing factors during 2000–2019. The results showed that: (1) the large-scale application of the RSEVI index showed good applicability to the CPEC region, with a precision of 89.75%; (2) the average RSEVI value for the CPEC region was 0.83, thereby falling into a category of “intensive vulnerability”; (3) a stable trend in RSEVI was observed for the entire CPEC region during the study period, except for the Indus Basin where there was a significant change; (4) the increasing rate of the RSEVI in the northeastern parts exceeded that of other parts during 2000–2019; (5) precipitation, temperature, and vegetation coverage showed negative relationships with RSEVI, whereas RSEVI showed a positive relationship with slope. The RSEVI results indicated that ice and bare land were the most vulnerable, whereas cropland was the least vulnerable; (6) there were differences in the dominant factor and dominant interactive factor among different sub-regions. The results of this study could provide important decision support for the protection of the ecological environment and for economic development.

Abstract Background Loiasis is one of the significant filarial diseases for people living in West and Central Africa with wide endemic area but is not seen in China. As economy booms and international traveling increase, China faces more and more imported parasitic diseases that are not endemic locally. Loiasis is one of the parasitic diseases that enter China by travelers infected in Africa. The better understanding of the clinical and laboratory features of loa loa infection will facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of loiasis in China. Methods The study targeted travelers who were infected with L. loa in endemic Africa regions and returned to Beijing between 2014 and 2023. Epidemiological, clinical, and biological data as well as treatment of these patients were collected. Results Total 21 cases were identified as L. loa infection based on their typical clinical manifestations and parasite finding. All cases had a history of travel to Africa for more than 6 months, most of them are the construction workers dispatched to West Africa with outdoor activities. Calabar swelling (n = 19; 90.5%) and pruritus (n = 11; 52.4%) were among the most common clinical symptoms followed by muscle pain (n = 7; 33.3%) and skin rash (n = 2; 9.5%). The adult worms were observed in the eyelid or subconjunctiva (n = 2; 9.5%) and subcutaneous tissues (n = 2; 9.5%). Although all patients presented with a high eosinophil count (> 0.52 × 109/L), only two cases displayed microfilariae in fresh venous blood and positive for filarial antigen. A cut section of adult worm was observed through biopsy on a skin nodule surrounded by lymphocytes, plasma cells and eosinophils. All subjects were positive in PCR targeting L. loa ITS-1. The constructed phylogenetic tree based on the amplified ITS-1 sequences identified their genetical relation to the L. Loa from Africa. All patients treated with albendazole and diethylcarbamazine were recovered without relapse. Conclusion This study provides useful information and guideline for physicians and researchers in non-endemic countries to diagnose and treat loiasis and L. loa infections acquired from endemic regions.

Abstract Cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) play a pivotal role in cell cycle and cancer development. Targeting CDK4/6 has demonstrated promising effects against breast cancer. However, resistance to CDK4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i), such as palbociclib, remains a substantial challenge in clinical settings. Using high-throughput combinatorial drug screening and genomic sequencing, we find that the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) is activated via O-GlcNAcylation by O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) in palbociclib-resistant breast cancer cells and tumors. Mechanistically, O-GlcNAcylation of MITF at Serine 49 enhances its interaction with importin α/β, thus promoting its translocation to nuclei, where it suppresses palbociclib-induced senescence. Inhibition of MITF or its O-GlcNAcylation re-sensitizes resistant cells to palbociclib. Moreover, clinical studies confirm the activation of MITF in tumors from patients who are palbociclib-resistant or undergoing palbociclib treatment. Collectively, our studies shed light on the mechanism regulating palbociclib resistance and present clinical evidence for developing therapeutic approaches to treat CDK4/6i-resistant breast cancer patients.

Abstract Background Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that presents a significant challenge to public health globally. Therefore, effective influenza prediction and prevention are crucial for the timely allocation of resources, the development of vaccine strategies, and the implementation of targeted public health interventions. Method In this study, we utilized historical influenza case data from January 2013 to December 2021 in Fuzhou to develop four regression prediction models: SARIMA, Prophet, Holt-Winters, and XGBoost models. Their predicted performance was assessed by using influenza data from the period from January 2022 to December 2022 in Fuzhou. These models were used for fitting and prediction analysis. The evaluation metrics, including Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE), were employed to compare the performance of these models. Results The results indicate that the epidemic of influenza in Fuzhou exhibits a distinct seasonal and cyclical pattern. The influenza cases data displayed a noticeable upward trend and significant fluctuations. In our study, we employed SARIMA, Prophet, Holt-Winters, and XGBoost models to predict influenza outbreaks in Fuzhou. Among these models, the XGBoost model demonstrated the best performance on both the training and test sets, yielding the lowest values for MSE, RMSE, and MAE among the four models. Conclusion The utilization of the XGBoost model significantly enhances the prediction accuracy of influenza in Fuzhou. This study makes a valuable contribution to the field of influenza prediction and provides substantial support for future influenza response efforts.

IntroductionIn vitro fertilization (IVF) is a technology that assists couples experiencing infertility to conceive children. However, unsuccessful attempts can lead to significant physical and financial strain. Some individuals opt for electro-acupuncture (EA) during IVF, even though there is limited evidence regarding the efficacy of this practice. Thus, this pilot study aims to explore the effectiveness and safety of EA during IVF on pregnancy outcomes.Methods and analysisThis clinical trial is a parallel, randomized, sham-controlled study. It aims to include a total of 118 infertile women who intend to undergo IVF. The participants will be randomly divided into three groups in a 1:1:1 ratio: the EA + IVF group, the placebo electro-acupuncture (pEA) +IVF group, and the IVF control group. All of the patients will be required to use ovarian stimulation drugs, while those in the EA + IVF and pEA + IVF groups will receive acupuncture treatment at three sessions per week (every other day) until trigger day with a minimum five session. The primary outcome of this trial will focus on the clinical pregnancy rate (CPR). CPR is defined as the rate of achieving clinical pregnancy from the first fresh/frozen embryo transfer cycle with an ultrasound-confirmed gestational sac in the uterine cavity. The secondary outcomes will assess embryology data, biochemical pregnancy rate, early miscarriage rate, Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Fertile Quality of Life (FertiQoL), patient retention rate, treatment adherence, and safety outcomes.Ethics and disseminationEthics approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Sichuan Jinxin Xi’nan Women and Children Hospital (number 2021–007). Engineered to capture hemodynamic processes at single-blood-vessel resolution at a rate of 0.2 Hz, this device represents an advancement in head-mounted tools for exploring intricate brain activities in mobile animals.

Abstract Air pollution has become a significant concern for human health, and its impact on influenza, has been increasingly recognized. This study aims to explore the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the impacts of air pollution on influenza and to confirm a better method for infectious disease surveillance. Spearman correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the correlation between air pollution and the influenza case counts. VIF was used to test for collinearity among selected air pollutants. OLS regression, GWR, and STWR models were fitted to explore the potential spatiotemporal relationship between air pollution and influenza. The R2, the RSS and the AICc were used to evaluate and compare the models. In addition, the DTW and K-medoids algorithms were applied to cluster the county-level time-series coefficients. Compared with the OLS regression and GWR models, STWR model exhibits superior fit especially when the influenza outbreak changes rapidly and is able to more accurately capture the changes in different regions and time periods. We discovered that identical air pollutant factors may yield contrasting impacts on influenza within the same period in different areas of Fuzhou. NO2 and PM10 showed opposite impacts on influenza in the eastern and western areas of Fuzhou during all periods. Additionally, our investigation revealed that the relationship between air pollutant factors and influenza may exhibit temporal variations in certain regions. From 2013 to 2019, the influence coefficient of O3 on influenza epidemic intensity changed from negative to positive in the western region and from positive to negative in the eastern region. STWR model could be a useful method to explore the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the impacts of air pollution on influenza in geospatial processes. The research findings emphasize the importance of considering spatiotemporal heterogeneity when studying the relationship between air pollution and influenza.

Abstract Background Alzheimer's disease is one common type of dementia. Numerous studies have suggested a correlation between Alzheimer's disease and inflammation. Microglia mainly participate in the inflammatory response in the brain. Currently, ample evidence has shown that microglia are closely related to the occurrence and development of Alzheimer's disease. Objective We opted for bibliometric analysis to comprehensively summarize the advancements in the study of microglia in Alzheimer's disease, aiming to provide researchers with current trends and future research directions. Methods All articles and reviews pertaining to microglia in Alzheimer's disease from 2000 to 2022 were downloaded through Web of Science Core Collection. The results were subjected to bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer 1.6.18 and CiteSpace 6.1 R2. Results Overall, 7449 publications were included. The number of publications was increasing yearly. The United States has published the most publications. Harvard Medical School has published the most papers of all institutions. Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Journal of Neuroscience were the journals with the most studies and the most commonly cited, respectively. Mt Heneka is the author with the highest productivity and co-citation. After analysis, the most common keywords are neuroinflammation, amyloid-beta, inflammation, neurodegeneration. Gut microbiota, extracellular vesicle, dysfunction and meta-analysis are the hotspots of research at the present stage and are likely to continue. Conclusion NLRP3 inflammasome, TREM2, gut microbiota, mitochondrial dysfunction, exosomes are research hotspots. The relationship between microglia-mediated neuroinflammation and Alzheimer's disease have been the focus of current research and the development trend of future research.

ABSTRACTPancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is currently difficult to treat, even when therapies are combined with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). A novel strategy for immunotherapy would be to maximize the therapeutic potential of oncolytic viruses (OVs), which have been proven to engage the regulation of tumor microenvironment (TME) and cause-specific T-cell responses. To boost tumor sensitivity to ICB therapy, this study aimed to investigate how glutathione peroxide 4 (GPX4)-loaded OVs affect CD8+ T cells and repair the immunosuppressive environment. Here, we successfully constructed a novel recombinant oncolytic vaccinia virus (OVV) encoding the mouse GPX4 gene. We found the OVV-GPX4 effectively replicated in tumor cells and prompted the expression of GPX4 in T cells. Our research indicated that OVV-GPX4 could reshape the TME, rectify the depletion of CD8+T cells, and enhance the antitumor effects of ICB therapy.

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) encompass a collection of clonal hematopoietic malignancies distinguished by the depletion of peripheral blood cells. The treatment of MDS is hindered by the advanced age of patients, with a restricted repertoire of drugs currently accessible for therapeutic intervention. In this study, we found that ES-Cu strongly inhibited the viability of MDS cell lines and activated cuproptosis in a copper-dependent manner. Importantly, ferroptosis inducer IKE synergistically enhanced ES-Cu-mediated cytotoxicity both in vitro and in vivo. Of note, the combination of IKE and ES-Cu intensively impaired mitochondrial homeostasis with increased mitochondrial ROS, MMP hyperpolarized, down-regulated iron-sulfur proteins and declined oxygen consumption rate. Additionally, ES-Cu/IKE treatment could enhance the lipoylation-dependent oligomerization of the DLAT. To elucidate the specific order of events in the synergistic cell death, inhibitors of ferroptosis and cuproptosis were utilized to further characterize the basis of cell death. Cell viability assays showed that the glutathione and its precursor N-acetylcysteine could significantly rescue the cell death under either mono or combination treatment, demonstrating that GSH acts at the crossing point in the regulation network of cuproptosis and ferroptosis. Significantly, the reconstitution of xCT expression and knockdown of FDX1 cells have been found to contribute to the tolerance of mono treatment but have little recovery impact on the combined treatment. Collectively, these findings suggest that a synergistic interaction leading to the induction of multiple programmed cell death pathways could be a promising approach to enhance the effectiveness of therapy for MDS.

BackgroundThe effect of first-line complex decongestive therapy (CDT) for breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) depending on various factors forces patients to seek additional treatment. Therefore, this meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of different conservative medical interventions as a complement to CDT. This is the first meta-analysis that includes various kinds of conservative treatments as adjunctive therapy to get broader knowledge and improve practical application value, which can provide recommendations to further improve BCRL patients’ health status.MethodsRCTs published before 18 December 2023 from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched. RCTs that compared the effects of conservative medical intervention were included. A random-effects or fixed-effects model was used based on the heterogeneity findings. Study quality was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias tool.ResultsSixteen RCTs with 690 participants were included, comparing laser therapy, intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC), extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), electrotherapy, ultrasound, diet or diet in combination with synbiotic supplement, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), continuous passive motion (CPM), and negative pressure massage treatment (NMPT). The results revealed that conservative medical intervention as complement to CDT had benefits in improving lymphedema in volume/circumference of the upper extremity [SMD = −0.30, 95% CI = (−0.45, −0.15), P < 0.05, I2 = 51%], visual analog score (VAS) for pain [SMD = −3.35, 95% CI (−5.37, −1.33), P < 0.05, I2 = 96%], quality of life [SMD = 0.44, 95% CI (0.19, 0.69), P < 0.05, I2 = 0], and DASH/QuickDASH [SMD = −0.42, 95% CI (−0.70, −0.14), P < 0.05, I2 = 10%] compared with the control group. Subgroup analysis revealed that laser therapy and electrotherapy are especially effective (P < 0.05).ConclusionCombining conservative medical interventions with CDT appears to have a positive effect on certain BCRL symptoms, especially laser therapy and electrotherapy. AbstractThe family Hippoboscidae is an ectoparasite that primarily inhabits bats and relies on the host’s blood for sustenance. This research provides the first complete mitochondrial genome of Nycteribia formosana, which shares similar characteristics with other dipteran insects. The circularized mitochondrial genome, spanning 15,107 bp, encompasses 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNA), two ribosomal RNA genes, and a control region. The nucleotide composition of A, C, G, and T is 40.4%, 10.9%, 6.7%, and 42.0%, respectively. The findings from the phylogenetic analysis suggest that the species under investigation forms a cluster with other species belonging to the family Nycteribiidae. Consequently, this study provides valuable insights for the identification of N. formosana.

The physicochemical properties, fatty acid composition and volatile aroma compounds of cold-pressed passion fruit seed oils were analyzed. The oils were rich in linoleic acid, oleic acid and volatile compounds. A total of 108 volatile compounds including 17 aldehydes, 23 alcohols, 21 esters, 19 ketones, 6 acids, 9 alkenes, 5 pyrazines and 8 others were identified using HS-GC-IMS. The significant differences of volatile compounds in the purple and yellow passion fruit seed oils were observed via the GalleryPlot graph and distinguished by principal component analysis. The results showed that acids, alcohols, esters and ketones were major aromatic compounds in purple passion fruit seed oils, which contribute to flavors such as flowery, fruity, creamy, yogurt. Whereas the contents of aldehydes, pyrazines, alkenes were higher in yellow passion fruit seed oils, which contributes to fatty and nutty odors. The findings filled in our understanding of volatilization characteristics in passion fruit seed oils.

Abstract Quantitatively establishing the correlation between nanoparticle size and fluorescence is essential for understanding the behavior and functionality of fluorescent nanoparticles (FNPs). However, such exploration focusing on organic FNPs has not been achieved to date. Herein, we employ the use of supramolecular polymeric FNPs prepared from tetraphenylethylene‐based bis‐ureidopyrimidinone monomers (bis‐UPys) to relate the size to the fluorescence of organic nanoparticles. At an equal concentration of bis‐UPys, a logarithmic relationship between them is built with a correlation coefficient higher than 0.96. Theoretical calculations indicate that variations in fluorescence intensity among FNPs of different sizes are attributed to the distinct molecular packing environments at the surface and within the interior of the nanoparticles. This leads to different nonradiative decay rates of the embedded and exposed bis‐UPys and thereby changes the overall fluorescence quantum yield of nanoparticles due to their different specific surface areas. The established fluorescence intensity‐size correlation possesses fine universality and reliability, and it is successfully utilized to estimate the sizes of other nanoparticles, including those in highly diluted dispersions of FNPs. This work paves a new way for the simple and real‐time determination of nanoparticle sizes and offers an attractive paradigm to optimize nanoparticle functionalities by the size effect.

Objective When considering surgical treatment options, many patients who undergo hip arthroscopy value continuing active lifestyles. To address these concerns, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of preoperative activity level on postoperative patient‐reported outcomes (PROs) in femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) patients following hip arthroscopy. Methods Data was retrospectively reviewed for FAIS patients who received hip arthroscopy between 2016 and 2018. Patients were divided into active group and inactive group based on preoperative HOS‐SSS scores. Preoperative active patients were 1:1 propensity‐score matched to inactive patients based on age, sex, BMI, and follow‐up period. PROs (HOS‐ADL, HOS‐ADL, iHOT‐12, mHHS), VAS scores, radiographic measures, performed procedures, complications, and revision surgery were compared and analyzed for both groups by Student's t test. Results A total of 71 patients in the active group and 71 patients in the inactive group were found using propensity‐score matching. In recent years, bat-associated pathogens, such as 2019 novel coronavirus, have been ravaging the world, and ectoparasites of bats have received increasing attention. Penicillidia jenynsii is a member of the family Nycteribiidae which is a group of specialized ectoparasites of bats. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of P. jenynsii was sequenced for the first time and a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the superfamily Hippoboscoidea was conducted. The complete mitochondrial genome of P. jenynsii is 16 165 base pairs (bp) in size, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes and 1 control region. The phylogenetic analysis based on 13 PCGs of the superfamily Hippoboscoidea known from the NCBI supported the monophyly of the family Nycteribiidae, and the family Nycteribiidae was a sister group with the family Streblidae. This study not only provided molecular data for the identification of P. jenynsii, but also provided a reference for the phylogenetic analysis of the superfamily Hippoboscoidea.

Abstract Background Acceptance-based pain management interventions have been receiving growing attention in cancer pain care. This study aimed to develop a cancer pain management program based on belief modification to improve the cancer pain experience of Chinese oral cancer survivors and to explore the acceptability and preliminary outcomes of the Cancer Pain Belief Modification Program (CPBMP). Methods A mixed-methods approach was applied to develop and revise the program. The CPBMP was developed and revised using the Delphi technique, and its further improvement was explored with a one-group pre- and post-trial designed with a sample of 16 Chinese oral cancer survivors, and semi-structured interviews. Research instruments included Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Chinese version of Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised for Cancer Pain (IPQ-CaCP), and the University of Washington Quality of Life assessment scale (UW-QOL). Descriptive statistics, t-test, and Mann–Whitney U test were used to analyse the data. The semi-structured questions were analysed using content analysis. Results The six-module CPBMP was endorsed by most experts and patients. The expert authority coefficient value was 0.75 in the first round of the Delphi survey and 0.78 in the second round. The “pain intense”, “negative pain beliefs” scores of pre- and post-testing decreased from 5.63 ± 0.48 to 0.81 ± 0.54 (t = -3.746, p

Using a Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) to implement partition control is effective in improving mobility in heterogeneous city networks. As one of the most complex issues in partition control, accurate sub-region partition is critical for control effectiveness. Current partition methods focus on the link density and precondition of existing MFD and disregard the factors that influence MFD distribution. To overcome this drawback, this study uses the characteristic value of the link and the intersection connected to the link as the analysis object and proposes an MFD sub-region partitioning method for large-scale networks. Firstly, the influences of road state parameters on MFD distribution are classified into traffic flow parameters, network physical properties, network operation mechanisms and emergencies. Simulation experiments are conducted to determine the degree to which these classifications affect MFD distribution. Secondly, a partition method combined with the link density and influence parameters of MFD is developed. The method is used for a preliminarily division of a road network through Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) and depth partition by the Normalised Cut (Ncut) algorithm. Finally, a case study is conducted in an actual city centre network, and results show that the developed method is superior to the single method based simply on link density.

Phthiridium szechuanum is a bat surface parasite under the family Nycteribiidae that prefers to roost in the hair of bats to feed on their blood. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of P. szechuanum was studied for the first time using Illumina sequencing technology. The mitochondrial genome was 14,896 bp in size and was predicted to encode 37 genes including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and 2 ribosomal RNA genes. Phylogenetic trees were constructed using the IQ-TREE web server and phylogenetic analysis was performed using the maximum likelihood method, and P. szechuanum was found to be phylogenetically closest to Basilia ansifera. These data will provide a molecular biological approach to the species identification of P. szechuanum and provide a new reference for further studies on the population genetics and phylogeny of the family Nycteribiidae.

Species of the family Nycteribiidae are blood-sucking ectoparasites that parasitize bats. To further enrich the molecular data of species in the family Nycteribiidae, the complete mitochondrial genome of Nycteribia parvula was sequenced for the first time in this study. The complete mitochondrial genome of N. parvula is 16,060 base pairs (bp) in size, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a control region. The nucleotide contents of A, T, G, and C are respectively 40.86%, 42.19%, 6.51%, and 10.44%. The phylogenetic analysis based on 13 PCGs supports the monophyly of the family Nycteribiidae, and N. parvula is the closest relative to Phthiridium szechuanum.

Abstract Background The impairment in the autophagy-lysosomal pathway (ALP) and the activation of NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome represent two molecular events leading to neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a devastating neurodegenerative disorder without a cure. Previously we demonstrated the cognitive-enhancing effect of a combined electroacupuncture (EA) therapy termed TNEA in a transgenic mouse model of AD, involving activation of transcription factor EB (TFEB), a master regulator of ALP. However, whether and how TNEA inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome via TFEB-mediated ALP in AD remains to be investigated. Methods 5xFAD mice overexpressing amyloid-β (Aβ) were treated with TNEA or EA on its composing acupoints (GB13 and GV24). The changes in the signaling pathways regulating NLRP3 inflammasome, the association of NLRP3 inflammasome with ALP, and the roles of TFEB/TFE3 in mice brains were determined by immunoblots, immunohistochemistry and AAV-mediated knockdown assays. Results TNEA inhibits the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and the release of active interleukin 1β (IL1B) in the hippocampi of 5xFAD mice. Mechanistically, TNEA promoted the autophagic degradation of inflammasome components via activating both TFEB and TFE3 by modulating kinases including AMPK and AKT. The composing acupoints in TNEA showed synergistic effects on regulating these molecular events and memory improvement. Conclusion Our findings suggest that TNEA attenuates AD-associated memory impairment via promoting TFEB/TFE3-mediated autophagic clearance of Aβ and NLRP3 inflammasome, and partially reveal the molecular basis of combined acupoints therapy originated from ancient wisdom.

Abstract Buckybowl structures as non‐uniform electrostatic potential distributions of polycyclic aromatic materials show a unique photoelectric performance. In this work, OTC was utilized for dynamic modulation of triplet exciton transition processes. Five host molecules with different functional units were selected, thus providing different intermolecular interactions in the host/guest systems. Therefore, the delayed emissions were regulated from 536 to 624 nm via the tuning of the triplet exciton transition processes of OTC in different hosts. Experimental data and theoretical calculations revealed that the varied triplet transition behaviors resulted from the competition between the intersystem crossing (ISC) process of OTC‐monomer and the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process of OTC‐aggregates. This work proves the superior structure of buckybowl‐based luminophore for controlling triplet exciton transition processes and supplies a new perspective for persistent afterglow luminophore design.

Abstract Flexible electronics are playing an increasingly important role in human health monitoring and healthcare diagnosis. Strong adhesion on human tissue would be ideal for reducing interface resistance and motion artifacts, but arising problems such as skin irritation, rubefaction, and pain upon device removal have hampered their utility. Here, inspired by the temperature reversibility of hydrogen bonding, a skin-friendly conductive hydrogel with multiple-hydrogen bonds was designed by using biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), phytic acid (PA), and gelatin (Gel). The obtained PVA/PA/Gel (PPG) hydrogel with temperature-triggered tunable mechanic could reliably adhere to skin and detect electrophysiological signals under a hot compress while be readily removed under a cool compress. Furthermore, the additional advantages of transparency, breathability, and antimicrobial activity of the PPG hydrogel ensure its long-time wearable value on the skin. It is both environmentally friendly and cost saving for the waste PPG hydrogel during production can be recycled based on their reversible physical bonding. The PPG hydrogel sensor is expected to have good application prospects to record electrophysiological signals in human health monitoring.

ObjectiveTo explore the effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on hypertension and provide guidance for its clinical application as an auxiliary approach.MethodsArticles published prior to July 2022 were searched in Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, CNKI, and Wanfang databases. Included were randomized controlled studies that used IMT to treat individuals with hypertension. The mean difference (MD) was computed using the Revman 5.4 software. In individuals with hypertension, the effects of IMT on systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR), and pulse pressure (PP) were compared and studied.ResultsThere were found to be eight randomized controlled trials totaling 215 patients. According to a meta-analysis, the IMT reduced the SBP (MD: −12.55 mmHg, 95% CI: −15.78, −9.33), DBP (MD: −4.77 mmHg, 95% CI: −6.00, −3.54), HR (MD: −5.92 bpm, 95% CI: −8.72, −3.12), and PP (MD: −8.92 mmHg, 95% CI: −12.08, −5.76) in patients with hypertension. In subgroup analyses, low-intensity IMT showed a better reduction in SBP (MD: −14.47 mmHg, 95% CI: −17.60, −11.34), DBP (MD: −7.70 mmHg, 95% CI: −10.21, −5.18).ConclusionIMT may become an auxiliary means to improve the four hemodynamic indexes (SBP, DBP, HR and PP) in patients with hypertension. Abstract Background Knee osteoarthritis (OA) and depression are both major health issues influencing the quality of elderly life. The aim of the present study was to explore the prevalence of depression and the factors influencing depression in community-dwelling elderly patients with OA of the knee in China. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study. The study included 214 participants aged 60 and older diagnosed with OA of the knee. The depression of the elderly was measured by using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Participants were asked to complete a demographic questionnaire, the GDS, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), the society dimension of Arthritis Impact Measurement Scales 2 (AIMS2). In addition, the participants performed a timed up and go test (TUG) and the stair-climb test (SCT). Results The average age of the participants was 69.2 ± 7.63 years old, their body mass index (BMI) was 25.2 ± 3.85, and their disease duration was 5.9 ± 7.72 years. Background: Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and permanent disability worldwide. However, the current stroke treatment has a limited effect. Therefore, a new treatment is urgently needed. Stem cell therapy is a cutting-edge treatment for stroke patients. This study aimed to gain better understanding of global stem cell trends in stroke via a bibliometric analysis.Methods: We used the Web of Science Core Collection to search pertinent articles about stem cells in stroke published between 2004 and 2022. Analysis was conducted using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and the R package “bibliometrix” to identify publication outputs, countries/regions, institutions, authors/co-cited authors, journals/co-cited journals, co-cited references, and keywords.Results: A total of 6,703 publications were included in the bibliometric analysis. The total number of citations significantly and rapidly increased between 2004 and 2022, with the most pronounced growth pattern observed in the period of 2008–2009. In terms of authoritarian countries, the USA had the most publications among the countries. As for institutions and authors, the most prolific institution was the University of South Florida, followed by Oakland University and then Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Chopp, M. and Borlongan, Cesario V, had the most output among the authors. Regarding the journals, Cell Transplantation had the highest publication, followed by Brain Research. As for references, “Mesenchymal stem cells as trophic mediators” was the most frequently cited (2,082), and the article entitled Neuronal replacement from endogenous precursors in the adult brain after stroke had the strongest burstiness (strength = 81.35). Emerging hot words in the past decade included “adhesion molecule,” “mesenchymal stromal cell,” “extracellular vesicle,” “pluripotent stem cells,” “signaling pathway,” “plasticity,” and “exosomes.”Conclusion: Between 2004 and 2022, the terms “neurogenesis,” “angiogenesis,” “mesenchymal stem cells,” “extracellular vesicle,” “exosomes,” “inflammation,” and “oxidative stress” have emerged as the hot research areas for research on stem cells in stroke. Although stem cells exert a number of positive effects, the main mechanisms for mitigating the damage caused by stroke are still unknown. Clinical challenges may include complicating factors that can affect the efficacy of stem cell therapy, which are worth a deep exploration.

BackgroundOne of the main objectives of stroke rehabilitation is to alleviate post-stroke spasticity. Over the recent years, many studies have explored the potential benefits of whole-body vibration (WBV) treatment for post-stroke spasticity, but it is still controversial.ObjectiveThe current study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of WBV for post-stroke spasticity and determine the appropriate application situation.MethodsFrom their establishment until August 2022, the following databases were searched: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Medline, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that were published in either English or Chinese were taken into consideration. We independently filtered the research, gathered the data from the studies, and evaluated the research quality (Cochrane RoB tool) and the overall evidence quality (GRADE). Rev Man 5.4 software was utilized to conduct statistical analysis.ResultsIn this analysis, 11 RCTs with 475 patients that reported on the effectiveness of WBV therapy for post-stroke spasticity were taken into account. Compared to the control groups, the results revealed that WBV combined with conventional rehabilitation at a vibration frequency lower than 20 Hz (SMD = −0.58, 95% CI: −0.98 to −0.19, P = 0.004) was more effective in relieving upper (SMD = −0.53, 95% CI: −1.04 to 0.03, P = 0.03) and lower limb spasticity (SMD = −0.21, 95% CI: −0.40 to −0.01, P = 0.04); similarly, it was superior for patients aged under 60 years (SMD = −0.41, 95% CI: −0.66 to −0.17, P = 0.0008) with acute and subacute stroke (SMD = −0.39, 95% CI: −0.68 to −0.09, P = 0.01). The valid vibration for reducing spasticity was found to last for 10 min (SMD = −0.41, 95% CI: −0.75 to −0.07, P = 0.02). ObjectiveIn this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) on cognitive and motor functions in patients with multiple sclerosis (pwMS).MethodsA literature search was performed in the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, CNKI, and Wan fang. The time interval used for database construction was up to December 2022, and the language was not limited. The collected trials were subsequently screened, the data were extracted, the quality was evaluated, and the effect sizes were computed using STATA/MP Version 13 for outcome analysis. Standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated for domain of interest.ResultsIn total, 17 articles that examined 364 patients with multiple sclerosis were included in this analysis. Non-invasive brain stimulation did not improve the overall cognitive function [SMD = 0.18, 95% CI (−0.32, 0.69), P = 0.475] but helped improve motor function in patients [SMD = 0.52, 95% CI (0.19, 0.85), P = 0.002]. ObjectiveTo determine the diagnostic accuracy of serological tests for coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19).MethodsPubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library were searched from January 1 2020 to September 2 2022. We included studies that measured the sensitivity, specificity or both qualities of a COVID-19 serological test and a reference standard of a viral culture or reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT–PCR). The risk of bias was assessed by using quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies 2 (QUADAS-2). The primary outcomes included overall sensitivity and specificity, as stratified by the methods of serological testing [enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) or chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIAs)] and immunoglobulin classes (IgG, IgM, or both). Secondary outcomes were stratum-specific sensitivity and specificity within the subgroups, as defined by study or participant characteristics, which included the time from the onset of symptoms, testing via commercial kits or an in-house assay, antigen target, clinical setting, serological kit as the index test and the type of specimen for the RT–PCR reference test.ResultsEight thousand seven hundred and eighty-five references were identified and 169 studies included. Overall, we judged the risk of bias to be high in 47.9 % (81/169) of the studies, and a low risk of applicability concerns was found in 100% (169/169) of the studies. For each method of testing, the pooled sensitivity of the ELISAs ranged from 81 to 82%, with sensitivities ranging from 69 to 70% for the LFIAs and 77% to 79% for the CLIAs. Among the evaluated tests, IgG (80–81%)-based tests exhibited better sensitivities than IgM-based tests (66–68%). IgG/IgM-based CLIA had the highest sensitivity [87% (86–88%)]. All of the tests displayed high specificity (97–98%). Heterogeneity was observed in all of the analyses. The detection of nucleocapsid protein (77–80%) as the antigen target was found to offer higher sensitivity results than surface protein detection (66–68%). Sensitivity was higher in the in-house assays (78–79%) than in the commercial kits (47–48%).ConclusionAmong the evaluated tests, ELISA and CLIA tests performed better in terms of sensitivity than did the LFIA. IgG-based tests had higher sensitivity than IgM-based tests, and combined IgG/IgM test-based CLIA tests had the best overall diagnostic test accuracy. The type of sample, serological kit and timing of use of the specific tests were associated with the diagnostic accuracy. Due to the limitations of the serological tests, other techniques should be quickly approved to provide guidance for the correct diagnosis of COVID-19.

This paper proposes an abnormal behavior detection using visual monitoring in rehabilitation center. The proposed method solves the problems of inaccurate and delayed detection of abnormal behavior in traditional algorithms, and provides necessary technical support for medical staff to quickly deal with patient abnormal behaviors. Firstly, the deep neural network model is adopted to detect the patient feature nodes and skeleton in the images. Then, the vector representing the position and direction of the patient limb in each frame is extracted. Finally, the angle between the trunk, legs and the ground during the fall, the aspect ratio of the body frame and the irregular motion of the wrist and ankle joins are used as discriminant features to determine the occurrence of patient fall and twitch. The experimental results show that the detection accuracy of the proposed method is 96%, and the detection speed in the real medical rehabilitation center is 25 f/s. The proposed method can monitor the patient behavior characteristics in the elderly rehabilitation center in real time, and issue an alarm timely in the case of accidental falls and twitch. Meanwhile, this paper provides a more accurate and convenient computer-aided nursing method for medical staff to monitor patient abnormal behaviors.

Phenolics have been used to suppress the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in food; however, enhancing their thermostability and photostability in foods remains a key issue. Ferulic acid (FA), quercetin (QT), and vanillic acid (VA), which reduce production of AGEs, were embedded in bovine β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) and their interaction mechanism was investigated. Fluorescence experiments demonstrated that FA and QT displayed typical static quenching, while VA caused fluorescence sensitization of β-LG. Furthermore, phenolics changed the secondary structure of β-LG by inducing the transformation from α-helices to β-structures, with Van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds as the primary underlying forces. The thermal and photostability of FA/QT/VA was significantly improved upon binding to β-LG. Furthermore, QT, FA and VA demonstrated good AGEs inhibitory abilities in BSA-fructose, BSA-MGO, arginine-MGO models. These results reveal that β-LG embedding effectively improves the thermostability and photostability of dietary phenolics in food.

The wing imaginal discs in Drosophila larvae are a pair of sac-like structures that later form the wings of the adult fly. During the past decades, wing discs have been used as a simple and accessible model system, for identifying genes and deciphering signaling cascades that play crucial roles in many aspects of development. In this protocol, we describe a simple method for preparing a cell suspension from wing discs (see Graphical abstract). This method can also be applied to the preparation of single-cell suspensions from other types of Drosophila tissues. When combined with genetic labeling, the dissociated cells are suitable for downstream analysis, such as flow cytometry. This method was recently used to isolate different populations of cells from Drosophila imaginal discs (Yang et al., 2022).Graphical abstract: Procedures to prepare a single-cell suspension from Drosophila imaginal discs. 2021 International Collaboration on Bamboo Construction was held from September 1 to December 1, 2021. The practice was held by the College of Civil Engineering of Nanjing Forestry University, University College London, International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation (INBAR) and co-organized by 6 international institutions and national companies of China. Two main bamboo structures were setup by the teachers and students in the campus of Nanjing Forestry University. More than 50 students attended the practice, including international students from different countries. The practice was held to deliver the feasibility and applicability of bamboo in various geometries and different spans, and different areas. Innovative technologies like BIM Revit Architecture and Sketchup were used for the design of bamboo structures. The main principle of the practice was that the raising of bamboo structures should be simple using a minimum of materials aside from bamboo. The results of the project contributed to the popularization of the use of bamboo in the architecture, engineering and construction sectors.

Seventeen indices were selected to structure a new water ecological health assessment system, consisting of water quality, ecological system, and ecological landscape, for evaluation of small rivers in Shanghai, China. There are 200 samples taken from 56 rivers distributed in ten districts from 2014 to 2015 in Shanghai, which were selected to constitute the study case, and the mean value of each indicator was used in the evaluation. According to various features, including natural geographical condition, social development level, etc., these rivers were classified as one of three types: central urbanization watercourse (CW), new town watercourse (NW), and village watercourse (VW). The results showed that the investigated rivers were at a medium health level, ranging from 1.79 to 3.59, with the average being 2.95. The ecological health of streams in rural areas is better than that of CW rivers and NW rivers. This study is expected to provide accurate statistics and appraisal for the improvement of river health.

As an important rare earth element (REE) extensively applied to industry, agriculture, and medicine, lanthanum (La) has attracted a host of health concerns. This study aimed to explore the relationship between La exposure and the risk of developing oral cancer through a case-control study with a large sample size. Serum La levels of 430 oral cancer patients and 1,118 healthy controls were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The association of La level with the risk of oral cancer was assessed in two ways: (1) as a continuous scale based on restricted cubic splines (RCS); (2) as a priori defined centile categories using multivariate logistic regression model, based on propensity score matching (PSM) and inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW). The RCS revealed a non-linear U-shaped relationship between serum La and oral cancer risk. Serum La deficiency or excess was associated with an increased risk of oral cancer. When the La level was analyzed as a categorical variable, a similar U-shaped association was observed. Of note, compared to those with La concentrations of 0.243–0.341 μg/L (reference quantiles, 41st−60th), the risk was increased in those with the lower or higher quantiles (0.132–0.242 μg/L vs. 0.243–0.341 μg/L: OR = 1.80, 95%CI: 1.07–3.02; 0.342–0.497 μg/L vs. 0.243–0.341 μg/L: OR = 2.30, 95%CI: 1.38–3.84). The results were generally consistent with the PSM and IPTW analyses. This preliminary study provides strong evidence that there was a U-shaped relationship between serum La levels and oral cancer risk. Much additional work is warranted to confirm our findings.

BackgroundProgress has been achieved by using acupuncture widely for poor endometrial receptivity (PER). However, different acupuncture dosages may lead to controversy over efficacy.ObjectiveTo evaluate the evidence-based conclusions of dose-related acupuncture on infertile women with PER.MethodReferences were retrieved from nine databases from inception to 26 February 2022. This meta-analysis included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the dose-related efficacy of acupuncture for PER with outcomes of endometrium receptivity (ER) parameters by transvaginal sonography (TVS) and the subsequent pregnancy outcomes in three acupuncture-dose groups: the high-dosage group (three menstrual cycles), the moderate-dosage group (one menstrual cycle), and the low-dosage group (two or four days). Since there remained sufficient heterogeneity among the three subsets, we prespecified seven subgroup variables (four clinical and three methodological) to investigate the heterogeneities.ResultsA total of 14 RCTs (1,564 women) of moderate or low overall quality were included. The results were different when the dosage of acupuncture was restricted. For the moderate or high-dosage group, CPR and part of ER parameters were improved in the acupuncture group (i.e., CPR: OR = 2.00, 95% CI [1.24, 3.22], p = 0.004, I2 = 0% in one menstrual cycle; OR = 2.49, 95%CI [1.67, 3.72], p < 0.05, I2 = 0% in three menstrual cycles). However, for the low-dosage group, no statistical difference was observed in CPR (OR = 0.07, 95% CI [−0.10, 0.23], p = 0.44, I2 = 82%) and a part of the ER parameters. In subgroup analysis, four subgroup variables (the routine treatment, risk of performance bias, duration of acupuncture treatment, and the age of participants) could explain some of the heterogeneities across all trials.ConclusionThe finding indicated that the trend of relatively more acupuncture dosage showed better effects for poor endometrial receptivity among PER women. It remains a potential heterogeneity in our studies. Further high-quality trials with a homogeneity trial design need to be conducted.

Capillaria hepatica is a seriously neglected zoonotic parasite, which infects the liver of mammalian hosts, causing fibrosis or even hepatic failure. At present, the immune responses elicited by C. hepatica are not fully understood, and the role(s) of the programmed death 1 (PD-1) signaling pathway in the context of C. hepatica-induced pathology are not known. In this study, we identify that the late stage of infection with C. hepatica—especially the egg-derived antigens—modulates the host immune responses to promote alternatively activated macrophage (M2) polarization and programmed death ligand 2 (PD-L2) expression. The PD-L2-expressing alternatively activated M2 macrophages play an important role in maintaining Th2-biased regulatory immune responses, which may facilitate the survival of parasitic worms or eggs within the infected liver and reduce the liver pathology caused by the egg granulomas. Treatment with anti-PD-L2 antibody had no effect on the survival of parasitic eggs but deteriorated the pathology of egg granulomas. The obtained results suggest that PD-1/PD-L2 signaling, which is involved in alternative macrophage polarization, determines the immune response pattern and the immunopathology, consequently determining the outcome of the parasitic infection.

Ferrous iron and polysulfide (Fe(II)Sn aq) is a nano‐decoction. It is usually prepared from the suspension of iron sulfide nanomaterial, using autoclave and centrifugation. A previous study conducted in our laboratory revealed that Fe(II)Sn aq was highly antibacterial, and it could efficiently kill more than 90% population of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, within 5 min of the treatment. Our study reported that the intravenous administration of Fe(II)Sn aq provided effective treatment against epididymis infection, caused by S. aureus. The results of the study further highlighted its potential for clinical application. However, its effects on the reproductive system and overall health of mammals have not been investigated earlier. The present study assessed the impacts of Fe(II)Sn aq on reproductive health and other aspects of male mice. Briefly, male mice were exposed to Fe(II)Sn aq, either intravenously at the dose of 0.7 mM, 1.4 mM, and 2.8 mM of Fe2+or orally at the dose of 1.4 mM, 2.8 mM, and 5.6 mM of Fe2+. Following this, body weight, organs index, quality of sperm, blood biochemical markers, histopathology of organs, oxidative stress and apoptosis were evaluated, after 1 day and 30 days of exposure. In addition, male reproductivity was evaluated in terms of mating with female mice, and the body weight of the resulting offspring was recorded. Our results showed that the mice processed with Fe(II)Sn aq exhibited normal physiological status and reproductive capability. The present study illustrated the short‐ and long‐term influences of Fe(II)Sn aq on the fertility of male mice for the first time. The findings of the study provided a valuable reference for the application of Fe(II)Sn aq, particularly in terms of reproductive safety.
