This article examines the formation of social capital and the relevance of guanxi (a Chinese concept closely related to that of social capital), among ethnic minority students and Han students in a Chinese university. Using data from 42 semi-structured interviews with university students, our study demonstrates that three distinct student categories (Min Kao Min, Min Kao Han, and Han students) access social capital in similar ways, including via the Chinese class-based cohort model, faculty and staff, engagement in social media and online platforms, and other on and off-campus social connections. However, these three groups of students showed significant differences in the formation and use of social capital. Due to the influence of pre-college education and Internet literacy, MKM and MKH students are relatively restricted in using social media and other online platforms to obtain social capital. The varying awareness of and attitude towards the concept of "guanxi" affect its formation and utilization, with many ethnic minority students viewing it as a cultural symbol of Han society and more likely to form bonding social capital within their own ethnicity. This shows that though the diverse campus environment effectively reduces the physical space between students of different ethnicity, it does little to break through the cultural barriers, making it challenging for minority students to form cross-ethnic bridging social capital.

Abstract Background With the fast pace of modern life, people have less time for meals, but few studies have examined the association between the habit of fast eating and metabolic diseases. Objective Combining the results of the current study and the prior ones, we aimed to investigate the possible relationship between fast eating and the risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Methods This is a sub-analysis of a multicenter cross-sectional study of 1965 participants investigated the association between fast eating and MASLD in Chinese. Fast eating was defined as meal time less than five minutes and participants were divided into three categories based on their self-reported frequency of fast eating: ≤1 time/month, ≤1 time/week and ≥2 times/week. We further conducted a literature search for available studies published before November, 2023 as well as a meta-analysis to investigate the association between fast eating and MASLD. Abstract UBXD family (UBXDF), a group of proteins containing ubiquitin regulatory X (UBX) domains, play a crucial role in the imbalance of proliferation and apoptotic in cancer. In this study, we summarised bioinformatics proof on multi-omics databases and literature on UBXDF’s effects on cancer. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that Fas-associated factor 1 (FAF1) has the largest number of gene alterations in the UBXD family and has been linked to survival and cancer progression in many cancers. UBXDF may affect tumour microenvironment (TME) and drugtherapy and should be investigated in the future. We also summarised the experimental evidence of the mechanism of UBXDF in cancer, both in vitro and in vivo, as well as its application in clinical and targeted drugs. We compared bioinformatics and literature to provide a multi-omics insight into UBXDF in cancers, review proof and mechanism of UBXDF effects on cancers, and prospect future research directions in-depth. We hope that this paper will be helpful for direct cancer-related UBXDF studies.

Text matching promotes the research and application of deep understanding of text information, and it provides the basis for information retrieval, recommendation systems and natural language processing by exploring the similar structures in text data. Owning to the outstanding performance and automatically extract text features for the target, the methods based-pre-training models gradually become the mainstream. However, such models usually suffer from the disadvantages of slow retrieval speed and low running efficiency. On the other hand, previous text matching algorithms have mainly focused on horizontal domain research, and there are relatively few vertical domain algorithms for agricultural text, which need to be further investigated. To address this issue, a second-order text matching algorithm has been developed. This paper first obtains a large amount of text about typical agricultural crops and constructs a database by using web crawlers and querying relevant textbooks, etc. Then BM25 algorithm is used to generate a candidate set and BERT model is used to filter the optimal match based on the candidate set. Experiments have shown that the Precision@1 of this second-order algorithm can reach 88.34% on the dataset constructed in this paper, and the average time to match a piece of text is only 2.02 s. Compared with BERT model and BM25 algorithm, there is an increase of 8.81% and 13.73% in Precision@1 respectively. In terms of the average time required for matching a text, it is 55.2 s faster than BERT model and only 2 s slower than BM25 algorithm. It can improve the efficiency and accuracy of agricultural information retrieval, agricultural decision support, agricultural market analysis, etc., and promote the sustainable development of agriculture.

Abstract Brain expressed X-linked gene 2 (BEX2) encoded protein was originally identified to promote transcription by interacting with several transcription factors in the DNA–binding complexes. Recently, BEX2 was found to be localized in cytosol and/or mitochondria and regulate apoptosis in cancer cells and tumor growth. However, the molecular mechanism underlying its roles in cancer cells remains unclear. Here, we report that crotonylated BEX2 plays an important role in inhibiting chemotherapeutic agent-induced apoptosis via enhancing mitophagy in human lung cancer cells. BEX2 promotes mitophagy by facilitating interaction between NDP52 and LC3B. Moreover, BEX2 crotonylation at K59 is critical in the BEX2-mediated mitophagy in lung cancer cells. The K59R mutation of BEX2 inhibits mitophagy by affecting the interaction of NDP52 and LC3B. BEX2 expression is elevated after anticancer drug treatment, and its overexpression inhibits chemotherapy-induced apoptosis. In addition, inhibition of BEX2-regulated mitophagy sensitizes tumor cells to apoptosis. Furthermore, BEX2 promotes tumor growth and inhibits apoptosis by regulating mitophagy in vivo. We also confirm that BEX2 is overexpressed in lung adenocarcinoma and is associated with poor prognosis in lymph node metastasis-free cancer. Therefore, combination treatment with pharmaceutical approaches targeting BEX2-induced mitophagy and anticancer drugs may represent a potential strategy for NSCLC therapy.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of comprehensive medical reform on the efficiency of medical resource allocation in China.Methods: This study employs the Slacks-Based Measure- Directional Distance Function (SBM-DDF) to estimate the efficiency of medical resource allocation (MRAE) in China, using panel data from 30 provinces during 2009–2021. Moreover, a multi-period Difference in differences (DID) model is developed to explore the effect of the comprehensive medical reform pilot (CMRP) strategy on efficiency of medical resource allocation in China.Results: The results show that the average value of China’s medical resources allocation efficiency is 0.861 during the sample period. Coastal area has a higher MRAE than that in the inland area. The DID results show that the comprehensive medical reform pilot strategy has a good, long-lasting impact on the efficiency of medical resource allocation. And the results remain valid after a series of robustness analysis. Additionally, the comprehensive medical reform policy has heterogeneous impact on efficiency of medical resource allocation. The promotion effect is only statistically significant in the eastern and central regions, the groups of higher MRAE and larger population size.Conclusion: China’s comprehensive medical reform policy can effectively promote the improvement of regional efficiency of medical resource allocation.

Recent investigations into the erosion of elbow junctions predominantly focus on identifying and predicting peak erosion points. Notably, these studies rely heavily on computational fluid dynamics methods, a valid approach but limited by its lack of empirical physical data. Additionally, the majority of these studies concentrate on the extrados, or outer curve of the elbow, neglecting the intrados or the inner curve. To provide a more comprehensive understanding of particle movements and the micro-mechanics of erosion on the elbow intrados, this study utilizes advanced observational technologies. High-speed camera technology, coupled with scanning electron microscopy, is employed to capture and record particle motion and micro-erosion patterns. The erosion rate is then estimated via the weight-loss method. The findings suggest that in low-speed liquid–solid flows (2.5 m/s), particles released from the intrados side of the elbow inlet exhibit a significant trajectory deviation from the centreline at an elbow angle of 60° from the inlet. Particles released from the extrados deviate towards the intrados side at an elbow angle of 30°. Secondary flow contributes to particle acceleration, unexpected trajectory deviation within the elbow, and an upward inclination in erosion on the intrados. The presence of partially overlapping scratches and cracks suggests that continuous ploughing and material fracturing are significant contributors to the micro-mechanics of erosion. When comparing the intrados and extrados, the extrados exhibits longer and shallower scratches, indicating a smaller impact angle. This research provides a more comprehensive understanding of particle trajectories and erosion patterns within elbow junctions during liquid–solid flows, offering new insights into the mechanisms underpinning these processes.

This study investigated the effects of ultrasound on the self-assembly behavior of pea protein (PP)-high methoxyl pectin (HMP) complexes at pH 2.0 through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and intrinsic fluorescence analysis. The emulsion stabilization mechanism of PP-HMP treated with ultrasound (PP-HMP-US) was also elucidated. The results indicated that ultrasound increased the emulsifying activity index (EAI) and emulsifying stability index (ESI) of PP-HMP. Moreover, PP-HMP-US-based emulsions formed small, dispersed oil drops, which were stable during storage. PP-HMP- and PP-HMP-US-based emulsions did not demonstrate any creaming. The TEM results revealed that ultrasound can regulate the self-assembly behavior of PP and HMP to form spherical particles with a core–shell structure. This structure possessed low turbidity, a small particle size, and high absolute zeta potential values. The FTIR and intrinsic fluorescence spectra demonstrated that ultrasound increased the α-helix and β-sheet contents and exposed the tryptophan groups to more hydrophilic environments. Ultrasound also promoted the PP-HMP self-assembly through electrostatic interaction and improved its oil–water interfacial behavior, as indicated by the EAI and ESI values of PP-HMP-US-based emulsions. The current results provide a reference for the development of an innovative emulsifier prepared by ultrasound-treated protein–pectin complexes at low pH.

Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) is an eminent turfgrass species with a complex genome, but it is sensitive to rust (Puccinia striiformis). The molecular mechanisms of Kentucky bluegrass in response to rust still remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs) and genes (DEGs) for rust resistance based on the full-length transcriptome. First, we used single-molecule real-time sequencing technology to generate the full-length transcriptome of Kentucky bluegrass. A total of 33,541 unigenes with an average read length of 2,233 bp were obtained, which contained 220 lncRNAs and 1,604 transcription factors. Then, the comparative transcriptome between the mock-inoculated leaves and rust-infected leaves was analyzed using the full-length transcriptome as a reference genome. A total of 105 DELs were identified in response to rust infection. A total of 15,711 DEGs were detected (8,278 upregulated genes, 7,433 downregulated genes) and were enriched in plant hormone signal transduction and plant–pathogen interaction pathways. Additionally, through co-location and expression analysis, it was found that lncRNA56517, lncRNA53468, and lncRNA40596 were highly expressed in infected plants and upregulated the expression of target genes AUX/IAA, RPM1, and RPS2, respectively; meanwhile, lncRNA25980 decreased the expression level of target gene EIN3 after infection. The results suggest that these DEGs and DELs are important candidates for potentially breeding the rust-resistant Kentucky bluegrass.

The effect of pH on the occurrence states of peanut protein isolate (PPI) and high methoxyl pectin (HMP), and droplet breakup model of the emulsions under ultrasound were studied. Particle size distribution and scanning electron microscopy results showed that PPI-HMP existed a soluble complex at pH 5.0, had no interaction at pH 7.0, and was co-soluble at pH 9.0. Droplet breakup model results revealed that the characteristics of emulsion stabilised by PPI-HMP treated at pH 5.0 was different from that at pH 7.0 and 9.0. The average diameter of the droplet well satisfied the model. According to rheological properties, interface tension, and microstructure, the formation mechanism and characteristics of emulsion stabilised by PPI-HMP treated at pH 5.0 was different from that at pH 7.0 and pH 9.0. The research provided a reference for constructing emulsions using pH-shifted PPI-HMP under ultrasound.

Background: Gliomas are brain tumors that arise from glial cells, and they are the most common primary intracranial tumors with a poor prognosis. Cellular senescence plays a critical role in cancer, especially in glioma. In this study, we constructed a senescence-related lncRNA (SRlncRNA) signature to assess the prognosis of glioma.Methods: The Cancer Genome Atlas was used to collect SRlncRNA transcriptome profiles and clinical data about glioma. Patients were randomized to training, testing, and whole cohorts. LASSO and Cox regression analyses were employed to construct the SRlncRNA signature, and Kaplan–Meier (K-M) analysis was performed to determine each cohort’s survival. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied to verify the accuracy of this signature. Gene set enrichment analysis was used to visualize functional enrichment (GSEA). The CIBERSORT algorithm, ESTIMATE and TIMER databases were utilized to evaluate the differences in the infiltration of 22 types of immune cells and their association with the signature. RT–qPCR and IHC were used to identify the consistency of the signature in tumor tissue.Results: An SRlncRNA signature consisting of six long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) was constructed, and patients were divided into high-risk and low-risk groups by the median of their riskscore. The KM analysis showed that the high-risk group had worse overall survival, and the ROC curve confirmed that the riskscore had more accurate predictive power. A multivariate Cox analysis and its scatter plot with clinical characteristics confirmed the riskscore as an independent risk factor for overall survival. GSEA showed that the GO and KEGG pathways were mainly enriched in the immune response to tumor cells, p53 signaling pathway, mTOR signaling pathway, and Wnt signaling pathway. Further validation also yielded significant differences in the risk signature in terms of immune cell infiltration, which may be closely related to prognostic differences, and qRT–PCR and IHC confirmed the consistency of the expression differences in the major lncRNAs with those in the prediction model.Conclusion Our findings indicated that the SRlncRNA signature might be used as a predictive biomarker and that there is a link between it and immune infiltration. This discovery is consistent with the present categorization system and may open new avenues for research and personalized therapy.

As an emerging form of medical organization, Chinese mobile healthcare (mHealth) platforms are inherently linked to the continuous use of users, which depends on the quality of the health information provided. However, improving the health information quality of mHealth platforms is still a problem that needs to be studied and solved in order to make the platforms sustainable. Based on the reputation mechanism, this study creates a behavioral evolutionary game model for health information providers (physicians) and managers (mHealth platforms), explores the evolution process and evolutionarily stable strategy of the behaviors in various situations, and uses numerical simulation technology to analyze mHealth platforms' constraints and the influencing factors of health information quality. This study presents three key findings. First, considering reputation, health information managers and mHealth platform providers should not unilaterally optimize health information. Instead, mHealth platforms should have active quality control, and physician groups should provide high-quality health information, which is the ideal evolution of the model. Second, the rewards that physicians receive from patients and mHealth platforms for providing quality health information, the reputation benefits, the penalties that physicians suffer for providing low-quality health information, and the increased probability and cost of rent-seeking behavior that physicians may choose can effectively promote the choice of physicians to provide high-quality health information. Third, the reputation gain of mHealth platforms, the probability of mHealth platforms being exposed, and increased losses suffered from exposure can effectively promote the choice of mHealth platforms to control the quality of health information. This study can provide a theoretical basis for mHealth platforms' health information quality control, which is conducive to the healthy and sustainable development of mHealth platforms and the improvement of user satisfaction.

Abstract Background To retrospectively compare clinical and radiological results of long-segment fixation (LF) and six-screw short-segment fixation combined with kyphoplasty (SSFK) for osteoporotic thoracolumbar burst fracture (OTBF). Methods Forty patients affected by OTBF with mean age of 61.85 years were included in this study. The mean follow-up period was 13.63 months. Twenty-four patients were treated by SSFK, and 16 patients were treated by LF. Clinical outcomes, radiological parameters and complications were assessed and compared. Soil is the largest carbon (C) pool in terrestrial ecosystems. A small change of soil organic carbon (SOC) storage may have a substantial effect on the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, potentially leading to global climate change. Forest stand density has been reported to influence SOC storage, yet the effects are often inconsistent. In order to reveal the mechanisms of effect of stand density on SOC storage, larch plantations with three different stand densities (which were 2000, 3300 and 4400 trees per hectare) were chosen. Soil properties were measured in three soil layers which are: 0–20 cm, 20–40 cm and 40–60 cm. An incubation experiment with 14C-labeled cellulose addition was subsequently conducted to study the decomposition of SOC and cellulose, as well as the enzymes activity involved in C and nutrients cycle. The results showed that SOC storage increased with increasing stand density in larch plantations, which was due to the higher C stored in heavy fraction instead of light fraction in higher density. The decomposition of added cellulose decreased with increasing stand density in each soil layer, as well as the cumulative soil derived CO2 emission rate. The activity of enzymes involved in C-cycle and C- and nitrogen (N)-cycle remained unaffected by stand density in the 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm layers. The enzyme activity involved in the phosphorus (P)-cycle did not change corresponding to the stand density in each soil layer. Enzymes involved in the N-cycle showed the highest activity in the middle stand density in 0–20 cm, but no difference was observed among different densities in the subsurface layer except for tyr in the 40–60 cm layer, which showed the lowest activity in high stand density. Cellulose addition stimulated the extracellular enzymes activity involved in the C-cycle and P-cycle in the 0–20 cm layer, and the stimulation declined with increasing stand density. However, significant stimulation of cellulose addition to C-cycle involved enzymes activity was not found in the subsurface layer. We aim to reveal the mechanism of effects of stand density of larch plantations on SOC storage by focusing on the cellulose and SOC decomposition and the corresponding extracellular enzymes activity. In the plots of higher stand density, larch plantations may lead to a weaker C output and stronger C input, which leads to the higher SOC storage.

Erosion in multiphase flow is very common to the industrial piping systems and it will increase the safety risk of the piping systems. Once accidents occur, it will bring about serious economic loss and environment pollution.By investigating the research on the erosion of multiphase pipelines, the progress of research at home and abroad was presented in terms of the theoretical model, the erosion test, the numerical simulation and the microscopic mechanism. Meanwhile, the existing problems in current research on erosion of multiphase pipelines were pointed out and discussed, and the development direction in future was also clarified. In general, the research results could provide reference for the deep understanding and mastering of the erosion mechanism of multiphase pipelines, as well as the safe and efficient development and transportation of oil and gas resources.

Based on the panel data of China’s A-share non-financial listed enterprises from 2011 to 2020, we empirically explore whether EGS performance can significantly promote corporate value and how to promote it, from the stakeholders’ perspective. We find that: 1) ESG performance significantly improves corporate value. 2) Both media attention and analyst coverage play an intermediary role in the impact of ESG performance on corporate value. 3) Further analysis of the single dimension of ESG illustrates that Environmental (E) and Social (S) have a positive impact on corporate value, but the effect size of Social (S) is smaller, and there is no evidence for a significant relationship between Governance (G) and corporate value. 4) The heterogeneity analysis shows that ESG performance of non-heavily polluting enterprises has a significant positive effect on corporate value, but not on heavily polluting enterprises. Meanwhile, ESG performance of enterprises with a low percentage of institutional investor ownership has a significant positive effect on corporate value, but not with a high percentage. Overall, our study shows that high-quality ESG performance triggers the attention of media and analysts, which in turn promotes corporate value by raising stakeholder pressure. We also analyze the possible causes of heterogeneous results from the perspective of stakeholders, and put forward reasonable suggestions to promote ESG performance and corporate value, as well as protect the interests of stakeholders.

Background: Glioma is one of the most aggressive cancer types affecting the central nerve system, with poor overall survival (OS) rates. The present study aimed to construct a novel immune-related signature to predict prognosis and the efficiency of immunotherapy in patients with glioma.Methods: The mRNA expression data and other clinical information of patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and low grade glioma (LGG) were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas databases. The immune-related genes were obtained from the Immunology Database and Analysis Portal database. Subsequently, an immune-related signature was created following the results obtained from the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator regression model. To validate the predictability of the signature, Kaplan-Meier survival curves and time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves were created. Moreover, both univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out using the OS between this signature and other clinicopathologic factors, and a nomogram was constructed. In addition, the association between signature, immune cell infiltration, tumor mutation burden and immunophenoscore were determined.Results: Results of the present study using 118 GBM and LGG samples uncovered 15 immune-related genes that were also differently expressed in glioma samples. These were subsequently used to construct the immune-related signature. This signature exhibits the ability to predict prognosis, the infiltration of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment and the response of patients with glioma to immunotherapy.Conclusion: Results of the present study demonstrated that the aforementioned novel immune-related signature may accurately predict prognosis and the response of patients with glioma to immunotherapy.

Artemisia selengensis Turcz. is a valuable edible and medicinal vegetable crop widely cultivated in Northeast China. Powdery mildew (PM) disease occurs during field and greenhouse cultivation, resulting in production losses and quality deterioration. The pathogen in A. selengensis was Golovinomyces artemisiae identified using optical microscopic and scanning electron microscopic observations, morphological identification, and molecular biological analyses. Parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) and antioxidant system responses as well as callose and lignin contents in A. selengensis were analyzed with inoculating G. artemisiae. Obvious of PM-infected leaves were confirmed with significantly lower values in electron transport rate (ETR), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), photochemical quenching (qP), and actual photochemical efficiency [Y(II)], but higher values in non-adjusting energy dissipation yield [Y(NO)], supposed that maximal photosystem II quantum yield (Fv/Fm) value and images could be used to monitor PM degree on infectedA. selengensis. In addition, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide anion (O2–), callose, lignin contents, and peroxidase (POD) activity increased, while superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, catalase (CAT) activity, and ascorbic acid (AsA) content decreased significantly in infected leaves compared to mock-inoculated leaves, indicated that lignin and protective enzymes are the key indicators for detecting PM resistant in A. selengensis. These results suggest that PM caused by G. artemisiae disrupted the photosynthetic capacity and induced imbalance of antioxidant system inA. selengensis. The findings were of great significance for designing a feasible approach to effectively prevent and control the PM disease in A. selengensis as well as in other vegetable crops.

Abstract Background The performance of liver stiffness measurements (LSMs) obtained using FibroScan can be affected by several factors, and cut-off values are different for fibrosis caused by various aetiologies. The study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of LSM in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients with abnormal glucose metabolism and investigate whether the LSM value would be affected by metabolic indicators. Methods The study involved 91 NAFLD patients with abnormal glucose metabolism who underwent liver biopsy. The diagnostic accuracy of LSM value was evaluated by the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves, with the biopsy results taken as the gold standard. Multivariate linear regression and subgroup analysis were performed to determine the correlated indicators. Results The areas under the ROC curves (AUROCs) of LSM values for detecting fibrosis stage ≥1, 2, 3 and 4 were 0.793 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.695–0.871), 0.764 (95% CI: 0.663–0.846), 0.837 (95% CI: 0.744–0.906) and 0.902 (95% CI: 0.822–0.955), with cut-off values of 6.3, 7.6, 8.3 and 13.8 kPa, respectively. Multivariate linear regression demonstrated that haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c, β = 0.205, P = 0.026) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT, β = 0.192, P = 0.047) were independently associated with the LSM value after adjustment for fibrosis stage, ballooning and inflammation grade from liver biopsy. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that LSM values were slightly higher in patients with HbA1c ≥7% than in those with HbA1c

In order to study the influence of collision between solid particles in gas-solid two-phase flow on erosion, an erosion prediction method based on the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method for calculation of particle collision and computational fluid dynamics was proposed. Herein, the Eulerian-Lagrangian method was adopted, the gas was taken as the continuous phase, the Navier-Stokes equations were solved, and the particle translation motion was solved by the Discrete Phase Model (DPM). For calculation of particle collision motion, the DSMC method was used to replace the real particles with a small number of sampled particles, and the collision conditions were judged by the corrected Nanbu method. Additionally, the effect of particle collision on elbow erosion rate and particle distribution in gas-solid two-phase flow was studied. The results show that the model error can be significantly reduced by calculating the particle collision with DSMC method, and the average percentage error of Oka model is reduced from 39.2% to 27.4%. For calculation of particle collision, the non-particle area on the inner arch side of the elbow becomes smaller, and the maximum erosion position moves backward 5° along the outer arch axis. Meanwhile, the flanks of the "V-shaped" erosion trace expand outward. Calculating the particle collision with DSMC method could significantly reduce the model error, and due to the small deviation from the experimental results, the Oka model considering particle collision is the best model for erosion prediction.

Abstract Background Environmental lodging stress, which is a result of numerous factors, is characterized by uncertainty. However, several studies related to lodging in cereal crops have reported that lodging in the Hippeastrum rutilum environment is very rare. Hippeastrum rutilum is a garden flower with high ornamental value and abundant germplasm resources. Under past cultivation practices, it was found that the plant types of ‘Red Lion’, with red flowers, and ‘Apple Blossom’, with pink flowers, are quite different. The leaves of ‘Red Lion’ are upright, while the leaves of ‘Apple Blossom’ show lodging, which seriously affects its ornamental value. The aims of this study were to compare the differences between the two varieties with leaf lodging and upright leaves according to morphological and physiological attributes. In this study, karyotype analysis and phenotypic morphological and physiological characteristics were compared to explore the differences between the two plant types. Results The karyotype analysis of the two cultivars showed that their chromosome types were both tetraploid plants. The results showed that the lignin content in the leaves of ‘Red Lion’ was high, the cross-sectional structure of the leaf vascular bundle was more stable, and the chlorophyll content was high. In addition, significantly less energy was transferred to the electron transport chain (ETR) during the photoreaction. Similarly, the results regarding the maximum photosynthetic rate (Fv/Fm), nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) and effective quantum yield of photosystem II photochemistry (△F/Fm′) all indicated that the photosynthetic capacity of “Red Lion” was greater than that of “Apple Blossom”, which was affected by leaf lodging. The size of the leaves was significantly smaller, and the leaf sag angle, leaf width, and leaf tip angle presented significantly lower values in ‘Red Lion’ than in ‘Apple Blossom’, which exhibits leaf sag. The difference in these factors may be the reason for the different phenotypes of the two cultivars. Conclusion The results of this study proved that lodging affects the photosynthetic capacity of Hippeastrum rutilum and revealed some indexes that might be related to leaf lodging, laying a theoretical foundation for cultivating and improving new varieties.

Based on the background of China's pilot low-carbon city initiative in 2010, 2012, and 2017, this article captures the exogenous change of enterprise labor structure based on A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2019 in Shenzhen and Shanghai Stock exchanges. With the integration of macro data on the city level and micro data on the enterprise level, adopting the time-varying difference-in-differences (DID) model, we found that 1) China's pilot low-carbon city initiative can significantly promote the upgrading of enterprise labor structure; 2) China's pilot low-carbon city initiative can significantly increase R&D investment of listed companies, suggesting that R&D investment is a channel for the impact of China's pilot low-carbon city initiative on enterprise labor structure in the pilot cities; 3) the heterogeneity analysis shows that the labor structure of the state-owned listed companies has been optimized significantly, while the labor structure of the non–state-owned listed companies is not significant. Meanwhile, the labor structure of the listed companies under high-quality government control has been optimized significantly, while the labor structure of the listed companies under low-quality government control is not significant. Overall, our study shows that the pilot low-carbon city initiative has played a governance role in China and optimized enterprise labor structure.

Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) is a cool-season turfgrass species that responds strongly to nitrogen (N), but the metabolomic responses of this grass species to N supply is unknown. The N-tolerant cultivar Bluemoon and N-sensitive cultivar Balin were exposed to normal N (15 mM) and low N (0.5 mM) for 21 days for identification of differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) between normal N and low N treatments. Balin had more reductions of chlorophyll and total soluble protein concentrations and a higher accumulation of superoxide radicals under low N stress. A total of 99 known DEMs were identified in either cultivar or both including 22 amino acids and derivatives, 16 carbohydrates, 29 organic acids, and 32 other metabolites. In Bluemoon, β-alanine metabolism was most enriched, followed by alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, biosynthesis of valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis, and glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism. In Balin, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism were most enriched, followed by the tricarboxylic acid (TCA), glyoxylate and decarbohydrate metabolism, and carbon fixation. Bluemoon generally maintained higher TCA cycle capacity and had more downregulated amino acids, while changes in more organic acids occurred in Balin under low N stress. Some metabolite changes by low-N stress were cultivar-specific. The results suggested that regulation of metabolites related to energy production or energy saving could contribute to low N tolerance in Kentucky bluegrass.

Abstract Background Many cancers evade immune surveillance by overexpressing PD-L1. PD-L1 interacted with its receptor PD-1, resulting in reduction of T cell proliferation and activation and thereafter cancer cell death mediated by T-lymphocyte. Understanding the mechanisms that regulate PD-L1 was of vital importance for immune checkpoint blockade therapy (ICBT). Methods Human non-small cell lung cancer cells and 293FT cells were used to investigate the function of USP22 upon PD-L1 and CSN5 by WB, Immunoprecipitation, Immunofluorescence and Flow cytometry analysis. B16-F10 cells were used to explore the role of USP22 on tumorigenesis and T cell cytotoxicity. The relationship between USP22 and PD-L1 expression was investigated by Immunohistochemistry analysis in human non-small cell lung cancer samples. Results Our data showed that USP22 interacted with PD-L1 and promoted its stability. USP22 deubiquitinated PD-L1 and inhibited its proteasome degradation. Moreover, USP22 also interacted with CSN5 and stabilized CSN5 through deubiquitination. Either USP22 or CSN5 could facilitate the interaction of PD-L1 with the other one. Furthermore, USP22 removed K6, K11, K27, K29, K33 and K63-linked ubiquitin chain of both CSN5 and PD-L1. In addition, USP22 depletion inhibited tumorigenesis and promoted T cell cytotoxicity. Besides, USP22 expression positively correlated with PD-L1 expression in human non-small cell lung cancer samples. Conclusions Here, we suggested that USP22 is a new regulator for PD-L1. On the one hand, USP22 could directly regulate PD-L1 stability through deubiquitination. On the other hand, USP22 regulated PD-L1 protein level through USP22-CSN5-PD-L1 axis. In addition, USP22 depletion inhibited tumorigenesis and promoted T cell cytotoxicity. Besides, USP22 expression positively correlated with PD-L1 expression in human non-small cell lung cancer samples. Together, we identified a new regulator of PD-L1 and characterized the important role of USP22 in PD-L1 mediated immune evasion. Targeting USP22 might be a new solution to ICBT. Abstract Background Excessive intrahepatic lipid accumulation is the major characteristic of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We sought to identify the mechanisms involved in hepatic triglyceride (TG) homeostasis. Forkhead box class O (FoxO) transcription factors have been shown to play an important role in hepatic metabolism. However, little is known about the effect of FoxO3 on hepatic TG metabolism. Methods Liver biopsy samples from patients with NALFD and liver tissues from high glucose and high sucrose (HFHS) fed mice, ob/ob mice and db/db mice were collected for protein and mRNA analysis. HepG2 cells were transfected with small interfering RNA to mediate FoxO3 knockdown, or adenovirus and plasmid to mediate FoxO3 overexpression. FoxO3-cDNA was delivered by adenovirus to the liver of C57BL/6 J male mice on a chow diet or on a high-fat diet, followed by determination of hepatic lipid metabolism. Sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c (SREBP1c) luciferase reporter gene plasmid was co-transfected into HepG2 cells with FoxO3 overexpression plasmid. Results FoxO3 expression was increased in the livers of HFHS mice, ob/ob mice, db/db mice and patients with NAFLD. Knockdown of FoxO3 reduced whereas overexpression of FoxO3 increased cellular TG concentrations in HepG2 cells. FoxO3 gain-of-function caused hepatic TG deposition in C57BL/6 J mice on a chow diet and aggravated hepatic steatosis when fed a high-fat diet. Analysis of the transcripts established the increased expression of genes related to TG synthesis, including SREBP1c, SCD1, FAS, ACC1, GPAM and DGAT2 in mouse liver. Mechanistically, overexpression of FoxO3 stimulated the expression of SREBP1c, whereas knockdown of FoxO3 inhibited the expression of SREBP1c. Luciferase reporter assays showed that SREBP1c regulated the transcriptional activity of the SREBP1c promoter. Conclusions FoxO3 promotes the transcriptional activity of the SREBP1c promoter, thus leading to increased TG synthesis and hepatic TG accumulation.

This paper explores the effect of China’s emission trading scheme (ETS) pilot policy implemented during 2013-2014 on carbon emission performance. Adopting the Difference-in-Difference (DID) model, we find that: 1) China’s ETS pilot policy can significantly improve the carbon emission performance of listed companies in the pilot provinces. 2) The heterogeneity analysis shows that the carbon emission performance of listed companies in the eastern coastal pilot areas has improved significantly, which is not significant in the central and western pilot areas. 3) We find that China’s ETS pilot policy can significantly improve innovation capabilities of listed companies, suggesting that innovation is a channel for the impact of the China’s ETS pilot policy on carbon emission performance in the pilot provinces. Overall, our study shows that ETS pilot policy has played a governance role in China and improved carbon emission performance. We further highlight some important policy implications with respect to helping companies save energy and reduce emissions, and promoting the further improvement of China’s ETS pilot policy.

This study examines the factors that affect the formation and operation of the university entrepreneurship ecosystem (UEE). Employing the case-study methodology, this research attempts to provide an evidence-based analysis of the existing theoretical framework of the UEE and verify the role of elements in it through empirical experience as described in semi-structured interviews with 33 respondents on and off an American university. Findings reveal that extracurricular activities, networks, entrepreneurial culture, and leadership have an important impact on the formation and operation of the UEE. Specifically, compared with formal courses, as important carriers, extracurricular activities have a more positive impact on the entrepreneurship of students. Different levels of networks can promote the circulation and exchange of resources. Culture is an important factor in forming and promoting individual entrepreneurial behavior and their agglomeration in the UEE. Clear vision and long-term commitments to entrepreneurship, namely leadership, play a leading role in the formation and development of a UEE.

Rapid rise in temperature in summer causes severe injury to cool-season turfgrass of both native species and introduced ones in Heilongjiang of Northeast China. The objectives of this study were to compare physiological responses to seasonal heat stresses and turf performances between native and introduced commercial Poa accessions. Three Chinese native Poa species (i.e., P. pratensis, P. sibirica and P. sphondylodes) and three USA Kentucky bluegrass cultivars (ie. ‘Midnight’, ‘Moonlight’ and ‘BlueChip’) were evaluated under field conditions in 2017 and 2018. All accessions showed unique characteristics and considerable seasonal differences in response to temperatures. However, performances over all accessions were largely similar in early spring and autumn. In summer, native P. pratensis performed similar to ‘Midnight’, ‘Moonlight’ or ‘BlueChip’, with respect to such traits or parameters as quality, coverage, color intensity, growth rate, osmolytes, ROS and anti-oxidant production. Native P. pratensis could be used as a new turf resource for further improvement and application under the specific climatic conditions in Heilongjiang; native P. sphondylodes may be used in repairing damaged environments or for alternative seasonal greenness.

Inland lakes or reservoirs are the main surface water resources, related to people’s survival and social development. On-site water level data are critical for water resource management, while satellite laser and remote sensing data are a significant tool for long-term change monitoring. In this study, we took the Miyun Reservoir, the most important source of drinking water in Beijing, as the research area. We used Landsat images and the Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat-2) for small-scale water level change monitoring and inversion across unrecorded periods. First, we proposed a new two-step denoising method based on local statistics to denoise the ATL03 single photon data from 2018 to 2020, and extracted the effective elevation information of Miyun Reservoir. Second, based on Landsat images from 1984 to 2020, the MNDWI index was used to extract the water area and generated a percentage map of water occurrence. Finally, the water and land boundary elevation were selected from the effective photon elevation information according to the boundary position under each percentage of the water generation percentage graph, the area, and the water level elevation model (A–E model) was established, and the water level values of unrecorded periods were inverted. The denoising results showed that the denoising accuracy of all data is higher than 95%. The area of Miyun Reservoir has changed greatly in the past 37 years, especially in the northeast corner and northern region. The inverted water level elevation had a strong correlation with the measured value, the correlation coefficient reached 0.97, the root mean square error (RMSE) was 0.553 m, and the estimated water level value was highly consistent with the recorded value and fluctuated dramatically from 1984 to 2020. This method complements the traditional water level mapping method, provides a new idea for the monitoring of water level changes in lakes or reservoirs without field records, and also contributes to the timely and effective monitoring and management of global lake and reservoir water level and time changes.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of comprehensive medical reform on the efficiency of medical resource allocation in China. Methods: This study employs the Slacks-Based Measure- Directional Distance Function (SBM-DDF) to estimate the efficiency of medical resource allocation (MRAE) in China, using panel data from 30 provinces during 2009–2021. Moreover, a multi-period Difference in differences (DID) model is developed to explore the effect of the comprehensive medical reform pilot (CMRP) strategy on efficiency of medical resource allocation in China. Results: The results show that the average value of China’s medical resources allocation efficiency is 0.861 during the sample period. Coastal area has a higher MRAE than that in the inland area. The DID results show that the comprehensive medical reform pilot strategy has a good, long-lasting impact on the efficiency of medical resource allocation. And the results remain valid after a series of robustness analysis. Additionally, the comprehensive medical reform policy has heterogeneous impact on efficiency of medical resource allocation. The promotion effect is only statistically significant in the eastern and central regions, the groups of higher MRAE and larger population size. Conclusion: China’s comprehensive medical reform policy can effectively promote the improvement of regional efficiency of medical resource allocation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Purpose It is recommended for colorectal cancer to harvest at least 12 lymph nodes (LNs) during surgery to avoid understaging of the disease. However, it is still controversial whether it is necessary to harvest from locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (neo‐CRT). The impact of lymph node yield (LNY) on prognosis in LARC patients was analyzed. Materials/Methods In total, 495 LARC patients who underwent neo‐CRT in 2006‐2015 were analyzed. After examining clinicopathological distribution differences between the LNY subgroups (with the threshold of 12), univariate and multivariate Cox survival analyses were performed. Survival plots were obtained from Kaplan‐Meier analyses. Similar subgroup analyses were performed according to the tumor regression grade (TRG) and metastatic status of post‐operational LNs. Results Of the 495 patients, 287 (57.98%) had an LNY of less than 12. Nearly no significant clinicopathological difference was found between the LNY subgroups, including the TRG scores. Multivariate survival analysis demonstrated that at least 12 LNs examined was an independent prognostic feature of good overall survival (OS), disease‐free survival (DFS), and distant metastasis free survival (DMFS), but not local recurrence free survival (LRFS). However, in the subgroup analyses, no association was found between LNY and prognosis in patients with good TRG scores (0‐1) or negative LNs. Conclusions For LARC patients treated with neo‐CRT, an LNY of at least 12 indicated an improved survival. Decreased LNY was not related to better tumor regression. It suggests that a sufficiently high LNY is still required, especially in those with a potentially poor tumor response.

Abstract Background GMEB1 was originally identified via its interaction with GMEB2, which binds to the promoter region of the tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT) gene and modulates transactivation of the glucocorticoid receptor gene. In the cytosol, GMEB1 interacts with and inhibits CASP8, but the molecular mechanism is currently unknown. Methods Human non-small cell lung cancer cells and 293FT cells were used to investigate the function of GMEB1/USP40/CFLARL complex by WB, GST Pull-Down Assay, Immunoprecipitation, Immunofluorescence and Flow cytometry analysis. A549 cells overexpressing green fluorescent protein and GMEB1 shRNA were used for tumor xenograft using female athymic nu/nu 4-week-old mice. Results We found GMEB1 interacted with CFLARL (also known as c-FLIPL) in the cytosol and promoted its stability. USP40 targeted CFLARL for K48-linked de-ubiquitination. GMEB1 promoted the binding of USP40 to CFLARL. USP40 knockdown did not increase CFLARL protein level despite GMEB1 overexpression, suggesting GMEB1 promotes CFLARL stability via USP40. Additionally, GMEB1 inhibited the activation of pro-caspase 8 and apoptosis in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell via CFLARL stabilization. Also, GMEB1 inhibited the formation of DISC upon TRAIL activation. CFLARL enhanced the binding of GMEB1 and CASP8. Downregulation of GMEB1 inhibited A549 xenograft tumor growth in vivo. Conclusions Our findings show the de-ubiquitinase USP40 regulates the ubiquitination and degradation of CFLARL; and GMEB1 acts as a bridge protein for USP40 and CFLARL. Mechanistically, we found GMEB1 inhibits the activation of CASP8 by modulating ubiquitination and degradation of CFLARL. These findings suggest a novel strategy to induce apoptosis through CFLARL targeting in human NSCLC cells.
