This paper presents a novel optimization model that explores the optimal investment strategies for DC pension plans with return of premium clauses. We have assumed that the financial market consists of a risk-free asset and a risky asset, where the price of the risky asset follows the CEV model. Under the expected utility criterion, the optimal investment strategies were derived by employing stochastic optimal control theory and the Legendre transformation method. Explicit expressions of the optimal investment strategy were provided when the utility function was specified as exponential, power, or logarithmic. Finally, numerical analysis was conducted to examine the impact of factors such as interest rate, return rate, and volatility of the risky asset on the optimal strategies.

At present, the accuracy of remote sensing estimation models of plant alpha diversity is generally low, and high-precision estimation models in deciduous broadleaved forest (DBF), deciduous coniferous forest (DCF) and evergreen coniferous forest (ECF) are still lacking. The main purpose of this study is to construct high-precision remote sensing models for plant alpha diversity in multiple ecosystems at global scale. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were derived from Sentinel-2 data. NDVI and NDVI based spectral diversity/heterogeneity indices were selected as predictive variables, and alpha diversity indices were selected as response variables. Simple linear regression (SLR), partial linear regression (PLSR), and random forest (RF) models were used to evaluate the predictive ability of the predictive variables against the response variables under six ecosystems (evergreen broadleaved forest (EBF), DBF, ECF, DCF, shrub, and grassland), and to compare the estimated robustness of various spectral diversity indices. In terms of prediction accuracy, the SLR models were the worst, and the PLSR model were average. RF performed best, outperforming most current models. Especially in DBF, ECF, shrub and grassland, the determination coefficient R2 of RF models can be as high as 0.9. In terms of the prediction of α-diversity, the prediction effect of species richness was better than that of Shannon index, Simpson index and Pielou index. The higher the vegetation complexity, the more accurate the assessment of vegetation α-diversity tends to be, especially in DBF, shrub and grassland. According to the importance of predictive variables and model stability evaluation results, NDVI, standard deviation of NDVI (SD), and NDVI derived Shannon’s diversity index (Sha), Cumulative Residual Entropy (CRE), Pielou’s evenness index (Pie), Hill’s numbers (Hill), Berger-Parker’s diversity index (Ber), Parametric Rao’s index of quadratic entropy (paRao) are all powerful indicators for predicting plant alpha diversity. Among them, the prediction performance of NDVI and SD is better. This study is not only an exploration of the practicability of R package “rasterdiv”, but also an attempt to construct high-precision remote sensing estimation models of plant alpha diversity at global scale.

Abstract Objective Mild therapeutic hypothermia (MTH) is an important method for perioperative prevention and treatment of myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury (MIRI). Modifying mitochondrial proteins after protein translation to regulate mitochondrial function is one of the mechanisms for improving myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury. This study investigated the relationship between shallow hypothermia treatment improving myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury and the O-GlcNAcylation level of COX10. Methods We used in vivo Langendorff model and in vitro hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) cell model to investigate the effects of MTH on myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury. Histological changes, myocardial enzymes, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial structure/function were assessed. Mechanistic studies involved various molecular biology methods such as ELISA, immunoprecipitation (IP), WB, and immunofluorescence. Results Our research results indicate that MTH upregulates the O-GlcNACylation level of COX10, improves mitochondrial function, and inhibits the expression of ROS to improve myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury. In vivo, MTH effectively alleviates ischemia–reperfusion induced cardiac dysfunction, myocardial injury, mitochondrial damage, and redox imbalance. In vitro, the OGT inhibitor ALX inhibits the OGT mediated O-GlcNA acylation signaling pathway, downregulates the O-Glc acylation level of COX10, promotes ROS release, and counteracts the protective effect of MTH. On the contrary, the OGA inhibitor ThG showed opposite effects to ALX, further confirming that MTH activated the OGT mediated O-GlcNAcylation signaling pathway to exert cardioprotective effects. Conclusions In summary, MTH activates OGT mediated O-glycosylation modified COX10 to regulate mitochondrial function and improve myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury, which provides important theoretical basis for the clinical application of MTH.

Abstract Sensors stand as pivotal cornerstones of technology, driving progress across a spectrum of industries through their ability to precisely capture and interpret an extensive array of physical phenomena. Among these advancements, microwave photonic (MWP) sensing has emerged as a new sensing technique, elevating sensing speed and resolution for practical applications. Integrated MWP sensors exhibit unparalleled capabilities in ultra‐sensitive, label‐free nanoscale detection, offering the potential to synergize with advanced integration techniques for a compact footprint and versatile designs. This paper reviews and summarizes the development and recent advances in integrated MWP sensing, focusing on the schemes based on microresonators. The diverse array of existing schemes is systematically categorized, elucidating their operational principles and performance demonstration. Furthermore, the assistance of machine learning and deep learning in integrated MWP sensors is explored, highlighting the potential of intelligent sensing paradigms. Finally, current challenges and opportunities aimed at further advancing MWP sensors are discussed.

Recent advancements in natural language processing, computational linguistics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have propelled the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in Automated Essay Scoring (AES), offering efficient and unbiased writing assessment. This study assesses the reliability of LLMs in AES tasks, focusing on scoring consistency and alignment with human raters. We explore the impact of prompt engineering, temperature settings, and multi-level rating dimensions on the scoring performance of LLMs. Results indicate that prompt engineering significantly affects the reliability of LLMs, with GPT-4 showing marked improvement over GPT-3.5 and Claude 2, achieving 112% and 114% increase in scoring accuracy under the criteria and sample-referenced justification prompt. Temperature settings also influence the output consistency of LLMs, with lower temperatures producing scores more in line with human evaluations, which is essential for maintaining fairness in large-scale assessment. Regarding multi-dimensional writing assessment, results indicate that GPT-4 performs well in dimensions regarding Ideas (QWK=0.551) and Organization (QWK=0.584) under well-crafted prompt engineering. These findings pave the way for a comprehensive exploration of LLMs' broader educational implications, offering insights into their capability to refine and potentially transform writing instruction, assessment, and the delivery of diagnostic and personalized feedback in the AI-powered educational age. While this study attached importance to the reliability and alignment of LLM-powered multi-dimensional AES, future research should broaden its scope to encompass diverse writing genres and a more extensive sample from varied backgrounds.

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more prominent in children's lives, an increasing number of researchers and practitioners have underscored the importance of integrating AI as learning content in K-12. Despite the recent efforts in developing AI curricula and guiding frameworks in AI education, the educational opportunities often do not provide equally engaging and inclusive learning experiences for all learners. To promote equality and equity in society and increase competitiveness in the AI workforce, it is essential to broaden participation in AI education. However, a framework that guides teachers and learning designers in designing inclusive learning opportunities tailored for AI education is lacking. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides guidelines for making learning more inclusive across disciplines. Based on the principles of UDL, this paper proposes a framework to guide the design of inclusive AI learning. We conducted a systematic literature review to identify AI learning design-related frameworks and synthesized them into our proposed framework, which includes the core component of AI learning content (i.e., five big ideas), anchored by the three UDL principles (the “why,” “what,” and “how” of learning), and six praxes with pedagogical examples of AI instruction. Alongside this, we present an illustrative example of the application of our proposed framework in the context of a middle school AI summer camp. We hope this paper will guide researchers and practitioners in designing more inclusive AI learning experiences.

South Africa possesses extremely rich renewable energy resources, including solar energy and wind energy, in spite of this, South Africa traditionally relies on coal as its primary energy source. Recently, South Africa confronted with severe electricity shortage. With pressure of power shortage and the transition to low-carbon energy, South Africa has been actively promoting the development of renewable energy, aiming to diversify its energy structure. China, as the world’s leading country in the development and utilization of renewable energy, has long been committed to helping South Africa achieve renewable energy development. This article reviews the cooperation progress between China and South Africa in renewable energy, and provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges currently faced by both sides. To address such challenges, it is suggested to strengthen the design of top-level cooperation mechanisms, create diverse collaboration platforms, prioritize the exchange and collaboration of scientific talents. This paper aims to provide a typical reference for deepening renewable energy cooperation between China and South Africa.

Abstract Characterizing the temporal evolution of the three‐dimensional structure of the Io plasma torus is essential to understand the dynamics of the Jovian magnetosphere. Optical imaging is a powerful tool to uncover the global torus structure. Currently, two ground‐based optical telescopes with diameters of 0.8 and 1.8 m, respectively, are under construction at the Lenghu Observatory for Planetary Science on the Tibetan Plateau of China, to systematically observe the Io plasma torus at wavelengths between 392 and 1,100 nm. These telescopes will begin to operate in the end of 2023. In order to support the inversion and scientific interpretation of the Io plasma torus images, we perform systematic simulations of the Io plasma torus in this work. First, a three‐dimensional model of electron and ion densities and electron temperature is constructed first. Then, the emissions of O+ 372.7 nm, O+ 372.9 nm, S+ 406.9 nm, S+ 671.8 nm, S+ 673.1 nm, and S++ 953.2 nm are simulated from the perspective of observing from the Earth. The simulated emission intensities and distributions are consistent with previous observations. This work provides a state‐of‐the‐art convenient tool for ground‐based telescope observation of the Io plasma torus at a specific site and time and also benefits future inversion of images to obtain physical parameters of Io plasma torus.

With the flourishing development of corpus linguistics and technological revolutions in the AI-powered age, automated essay scoring (AES) models have been intensively developed. However, the intricate relationship between linguistic features and different constructs of writing quality has yet to be thoroughly investigated. The present study harnessed computational analytic tools and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to distill and refine linguistic indicators for model construction. Findings revealed that both micro-features and their combination with aggregated features robustly described writing quality over aggregated features alone. Linear and non-linear models were thus developed to explore the associations between linguistic features and different constructs of writing quality. The non-linear AES model with Random Forest Regression demonstrated superior performance over other benchmark models. Furthermore, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) was employed to pinpoint the most powerful linguistic features for each rating trait, enhancing the model’s transparency through explainable AI (XAI). These insights hold the potential to substantially facilitate the advancement of multi-dimensional approaches toward writing assessment and instruction.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute autoimmune vascular disease featured with a long stage of febrile. It predominantly afflicts children under 5 years old and causes an increased risk of cardiovascular combinations. The onset and progression of KD are impacted by many aspects, including genetic susceptibility, infection, and immunity. In recent years, many studies revealed that miRNAs, a novel class of small non-coding RNAs, may play an indispensable role in the development of KD via differential expression and participation in the central pathogenesis of KD comprise of the modulation of immunity, inflammatory response and vascular dysregulation. Although specific diagnose criteria remains unclear up to date, accumulating clinical evidence indicated that miRNAs, as small molecules, could serve as potential diagnostic biomarkers and exhibit extraordinary specificity and sensitivity. Besides, miRNAs have gained attention in affecting therapies for Kawasaki disease and providing new insights into personalized treatment. Through consanguineous coordination with classical therapies, miRNAs could overcome the inevitable drug-resistance and poor prognosis problem in a novel point of view. In this review, we systematically reviewed the existing literature and summarized those findings to analyze the latest mechanism to explore the role of miRNAs in the treatment of KD from basic and clinical aspects retrospectively. Our discussion helps to better understand the pathogenesis of KD and may offer profound inspiration on KD diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has raised great concerns. The effect of NSAIDs on the clinical status of COVID-19 remains in question. Therefore, we performed a post-hoc analysis from the ORCHID trial. Patients with COVID-19 from the ORCHID trial were categorized into two groups according to NSAID use. The 28-day mortality, hospitalized discharge, and safety outcomes with NSAIDs for patients with COVID-19 were analyzed. A total of 476 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were included; 412 patients (86.5%) did not receive NSAIDs, while 64 patients (13.5%) took NSAIDs as regular home medication. Patients who took NSAIDs did not have a significant increase in the risk of 28-day mortality (fully adjusted: hazard ratio [HR]: 1.12, 95% CI: 0.52–2.42) in the Cox multivariate analysis. Moreover, NSAIDs did not decrease hospital discharge through 28 days (fully adjusted: HR: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.75–1.37). The results of a meta-analysis including 14 studies involving 48,788 patients with COVID-19 showed that the use of NSAIDs had a survival benefit (summary risk ratio [RR]: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.54–0.91) and decreased the risk of severe COVID-19 (summary: RR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.71–0.88). In conclusion, the use of NSAIDs is not associated with worse clinical outcomes, including 28-day mortality or hospital discharge in American adult hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Based on current evidence, the use of NSAIDs is safe and should not be cautioned against during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ongoing trials should further assess in-hospital treatment with NSAIDs for patients with COVID-19.

Abstract Purpose To describe technical details of modifying four different Cook Zenith devices to treat complex aortic aneurysms. Material In the first three cases, the modification process involved complete stent graft deployment on a sterile back table. Fenestrations were created using an ophthalmologic cautery and reinforced with a radiopaque snare using a double-armed 4–0 Ethibond locking suture based on measurements obtained on centerline of flow. In each instance, a nitinol wire was withdrawn and redirected through and through the fabric and used as a constraining wire. In the fourth patient, modification involved partial stent graft deployment and creation of additional two fenestrations to accommodate renal arteries. The devices are resheathed and implanted in the standard fashion. Results Four patients underwent exclusion of their aneurysms, including thoracoabdominal aneurysms (n = 2), a contained ruptured juxtarenal aneurysm (n = 1), and a ruptured failed previous endovascular repair (n = 1). Fifteen fenestrations were successfully bridged with Atrium iCAST stent grafts. Average graft modification time, operative time, contrast volume, radiation dose, estimated blood loss, and hospital length of stay were 89 min, 155.25 min, 58.8 mL, 2451 mGy, 175 mL, and 4.3 days, respectively. One patient required a secondary intervention to treat a type Ib endoleak. During an average follow-up of 25 months, aneurysm sacs progressively shrank without additional intervention. Conclusion Physician-modified fenestrated/branched endografts are a safe alternative to custom made devices, especially in urgent cases and should be part of the armamentarium of any complex aortic program.

Abstract Background The cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) is widely considered as a pivotal immune checkpoint molecule to suppress antitumor immunity. However, the significance of soluble CTLA-4 (sCTLA-4) remains unclear in the patients with brain glioma. Here we aimed to investigate the significance of serum sCTLA-4 levels as a noninvasive biomarker for diagnosis and evaluation of the prognosis in glioma patients. Methods In this study, the levels of sCTLA-4 in serum from 50 patients diagnosed with different grade gliomas including preoperative and postoperative, and 50 healthy individuals were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). And then ROC curve analysis and survival analyses were performed to explore the clinical significance of sCTLA-4. Results Serum sCTLA-4 levels were significantly increased in patients with glioma compared to that of healthy individuals, and which was also positively correlated with the tumor grade. ROC curve analysis showed that the best cutoff value for sCTLA-4 for glioma is 112.1 pg/ml, as well as the sensitivity and specificity with 82.0 and 78.0%, respectively, and a cut-off value of 220.43 pg/ml was best distinguished in patients between low-grade glioma group and high-grade glioma group with sensitivity 73.1% and specificity 79.2%. Survival analysis revealed that the patients with high sCTLA-4 levels (> 189.64 pg/ml) had shorter progression-free survival (PFS) compared to those with low sCTLA-4 levels (≤189.64 pg/ml). In the univariate analysis, elder, high-grade tumor, high sCTLA-4 levels and high Ki-67 index were significantly associated with shorter PFS. In the multivariate analysis, sCTLA-4 levels and tumor grade remained an independent prognostic factor. Conclusion These findings indicated that serum sCTLA-4 levels play a critical role in the pathogenesis and development of glioma, which might become a valuable predictive biomarker for supplementary diagnosis and evaluation of the progress and prognosis in glioma.

ObjectiveLarge body of studies described individuals with obesity experiencing a worse prognosis in COVID-19. However, the effects of obesity on the prognosis of COVID-19 in patients without comorbidities have not been studied. Therefore, the current study aimed to provide evidence of the relationship between obesity and clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients without comorbidities.MethodsA total of 116 hospitalized COVID-19 patients without comorbidities from the ORCHID study (Patients with COVID-19 from the Outcomes Related to COVID-19 Treated with Hydroxychloroquine among Inpatients with Symptomatic Disease) were included. Obesity is defined as a BMI of ≥30 kg/m2. A Cox regression analysis was used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) for discharge and death after 28 days.ResultsThe percentage of obesity in COVID-19 patients without comorbidities was 54.3% (63/116). Discharge at 28 days occurred in 56/63 (84.2%) obese and 51/53 (92.2%) non-obese COVID-19 patients without comorbidities. Four (3.4%) COVID-19 patients without any comorbidities died within 28 days, among whom 2/63 (3.2%) were obese and 2/53 (3.8%) were non-obese. Multivariate Cox regression analyses showed that obesity was independently associated with a decreased rate of 28-day discharge (adjusted HR: 0.55, 95% CI: 0.35–0.83) but was not significantly associated with 28-day death (adjusted HR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.18–7.06) in COVID-19 patients without any comorbidities.ConclusionsObesity was independently linked to prolonged hospital length of stay in COVID-19 without any comorbidity. Larger prospective trials are required to assess the role of obesity in COVID-19 related deaths.

Previous studies reported that sex and age could influence urine metabolomics, which should be considered in biomarker discovery. As a consequence, for the baseline of urine metabolomics characteristics, it becomes critical to avoid confounding effects in clinical cohort studies. In this study, we provided a comprehensive lifespan characterization of urine metabolomics in a cohort of 348 healthy children and 315 adults, aged 1 to 78 years, using liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry. Our results suggest that sex-dependent urine metabolites are much greater in adults than in children. The pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis and alanine metabolism pathways were enriched in early life. Androgen and estrogen metabolism showed high activity during adolescence and youth stages. Pyrimidine metabolism was enriched in the geriatric stage. Based on the above analysis, metabolomic characteristics of each age stage were provided. This work could help us understand the baseline of urine metabolism characteristics and contribute to further studies of clinical disease biomarker discovery.

The task of automated essay scoring (AES) continues to attract interdisciplinary attention due to its commercial and educational importance as well as related research challenges. Traditional AES approaches rely on handcrafted features, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive. Neural network approaches have recently given fantastic results in AES without feature engineering, but they usually require extensive annotated data. Moreover, most of the existing AES models only report a single holistic score without providing diagnostic information about various dimensions of writing quality. Focusing on these issues, we develop a novel approach using multi-task learning (MTL) with fine-tuning Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) for multi-dimensional AES tasks. As a state-of-the-art pre-trained language model, a BERT-based approach can improve AES tasks with limited training data. Meanwhile, we deal with long texts by proposing a hierarchical method and using the attention mechanism to automatically determine the contribution of different fractions of the input essay to the final score. For the multi-topic essay scoring tasks on the ASAP dataset, results reveal that our approach outperforms the average quadratic weighted Kappa (QWK) score by 4.5% compared with the strong baseline. We propose a self-collected dataset of Chinese EFL Learners’ Argumentation (CELA) to provide valuable information about writing quality from multiple rating dimensions, including holistic and five analytic scales. For the multi-rating dimensional essay scoring tasks on the CELA dataset, experimental results demonstrate that our model increases the average QWK score by 8.1% compared with the strong baseline.

Abstract Background Trace elements function as essential cofactors that are involved in various biochemical processes in mammals. Autophagy is vital for nutrient supplement, which is an important Zeitegber for the circadian homeostasis in heart. Here, we considered the possibility that autophagy, as well as the cardiomyocyte clock and glycolysis are interlinked. Detrimental effects were observed when cardiac system is exposed to bromine containing drugs. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of bromide on the circadian clock and glycolytic metabolism of H9C2 cardiomyocytes. Results In the present study, bromide does not affect cell viability and apoptosis of H9C2 cardiomyocytes. Bromide dampens the clock and glycolytic (Hk2 and Pkm2) gene expression rhythmicity in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, bromide inhibits autophagic process in H9C2 cardiomyocytes. In contrast, rapamycin (an autophagy inducer) dramatically restores the inhibitory effect of NaBr on the mRNA expression levels of clock genes (Bmal1, Cry1 and Rorα) and glycolytic genes (Hk2 and Pkm2). Conclusions Our results reveal that bromide represses the clock and glycolytic gene expression patterns, partially through inhibition of autophagy.

Abstract Background Extensor apparatus rupture is a severe complication after knee arthroplasty, but there have not been many reports on how to perform knee arthroplasty after chronic patellar ligament rupture. We reported a case of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in a patient with severe osteoarthritis (OA) complicated by chronic patellar ligament rupture. Case presentation In this case, a 67-year-old male patient suffered from patellar ligament rupture due to trauma more than 20 years ago and did not undergo any formal treatment. Physical examination revealed a small amount of fluid and extension lag, and the patella was displaced upward by approximately 5.5 cm. The quadriceps were atrophic and weak. There was significant tenderness on the medial side of the left knee joint. Passive motion of the left knee joint ranged from full extension to 120° of flexion with discomfort during excessive flexion. Active flexion of the knee joint to 120°, and extensor lag was approximately 90°. We reconstructed the extensor apparatus through a quadriceps tendon V-Y quadricepsplasty and Krackow suture technique of the patellar ligament, and osteoarthritis was resolved with TKA. The visual analogue scale (VAS) score decreased from 5 points to 1 point after surgery. Six weeks later, the patient was able to walk normally without a walking stick, and the knee joint could stretch actively to approximately 30°. However, he had obvious extension lag. This problem improved 10 months after surgery. The AKS score increased from 35 to 95 10 months after surgery. The HSS score increased from 43 to 93. Conclusions TKA and ligament reconstruction are options for the treatment of knee OA with chronic patellar ligament rupture. V-Y lengthening of the quadriceps femoris tendon after the Krackow suture technique of the patellar ligament with transpatellar tunnels may be a reasonable choice during TKA.

ObjectivesKnowledge of the urinary metabolomic profiles of healthy children and adolescents plays a promising role in the field of pediatrics. Metabolomics has also been used to diagnose disease, discover novel biomarkers, and elucidate pathophysiological pathways. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in childhood. However, large-sample urinary metabolomic studies in children with ADHD are relatively rare. In this study, we aimed to identify specific biomarkers for ADHD diagnosis in children and adolescents by urinary metabolomic profiling.MethodsWe explored the urine metabolome in 363 healthy children aged 1–18 years and 76 patients with ADHD using high-resolution mass spectrometry.ResultsMetabolic pathways, such as arachidonic acid metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and catecholamine biosynthesis, were found to be related to sex and age in healthy children. The urinary metabolites displaying the largest differences between patients with ADHD and healthy controls belonged to the tyrosine, leucine, and fatty acid metabolic pathways. A metabolite panel consisting of FAPy-adenine, 3-methylazelaic acid, and phenylacetylglutamine was discovered to have good predictive ability for ADHD, with a receiver operating characteristic area under the curve (ROC–AUC) of 0.918. A panel of FAPy-adenine, N-acetylaspartylglutamic acid, dopamine 4-sulfate, aminocaproic acid, and asparaginyl-leucine was used to establish a robust model for ADHD comorbid tic disorders and controls with an AUC of 0.918.

Background and AimsWe investigated the association between liver fibrosis scores and clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19.MethodsWe performed a post-hoc analysis among patients with COVID-19 from the trial study Outcomes Related to COVID-19 treated with Hydroxychloroquine among Inpatients with symptomatic Disease (ORCHID) trial. The relationship between aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to platelet ratio index (APRI), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score (NFS), Fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4), and discharge and death during the 28-days of hospitalization was investigated.ResultsDuring the 28 days after randomization, 237 (80.6%) patients were discharged while 31 (10.5%) died among the 294 patients with COVID-19. The prevalence for advanced fibrosis was estimated to be 34, 21.8, and 37.8% for FIB-4 (>2.67), APRI (>1), and NFS (>0.676), respectively. In multivariate analysis, FIB-4 >2.67 [28-days discharge: hazard ratio (HR): 0.62; 95% CI: 0.46–0.84; 28-days mortality: HR: 5.13; 95% CI: 2.18–12.07], APRI >1 (28-days discharge: HR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.44–0.87; 28-days mortality: HR: 2.85, 95% CI: 1.35–6.03), and NFS >0.676 (28-days discharge: HR: 0.5; 95% CI: 0.35–0.69; 28-days mortality: HR: 4.17; 95% CI: 1.62–10.72) was found to significantly reduce the discharge rate and increase the risk of death. Additionally, FIB-4, APRI, and NFS were found to have good predictive ability and calibration performance for 28-day death (C-index: 0.74 for FIB-4, 0.657 for APRI, and 0.745 for NFS) and discharge (C-index: 0.649 for FIB-4, 0.605 for APRI, and 0.685 for NFS).ConclusionIn hospitalized patients with COVID-19, FIB-4, APRI, and NFS may be good predictors for death and discharge within 28 days. The link between liver fibrosis and the natural history of COVID-19 should be further investigated.

Herein, the impact and spin‐coating process of Nafion thin films on photonic nanowaveguide structures fabricated via a complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor compatible process for the first time is investigated. Particularly, the effect of Nafion thin films (≈23–776 nm) on microring resonators (MRRs) with compact waveguide sizes (480 nm by 220 nm and 380 nm by 220 nm) is focused on, where the microring provides enhanced interactions between the Nafion and light, which is related to Nafion thin‐film properties such as the refractive index, water uptake, and swelling. The results demonstrate small, compact, and cost‐effective MRR devices to characterize Nafion thin film and high‐resolution on‐chip humidity sensing for real‐time and continuous measurements.

Iliocaval arteriovenous fistulas most commonly occur after iatrogenic vascular injury and present as high-output heart failure. Treatment can be either via open surgical approach or endovascular repair, with the latter being favoured in the more recent but sparse literature. Here we present a case report of an iliocaval arteriovenous fistula manifesting 10 years after vascular injury and managed successfully with endovascular repair with unibody stent graft. This publication adds to the limited body of literature on this topic and offers technical considerations for endograft selection and operative approach.

Photoactivated sterilization has received more attention in dealing with implant-associated infections due to its advantages of rapid and effective bacteriostasis and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. Herein, a micro-arc oxidation (MAO)/polymethyltrimethoxysilane (PMTMS)@hemin-induced calcium-bearing phosphate microsphere (Hemin-CaP) coating was prepared on pure magnesium (Mg) via MAO processing and dipping treatments. The morphology and composition of the coating were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. Corrosion behavior was evaluated through electrochemical and hydrogen evolution tests. The release of Fe3+ ions at different immersion times was measured with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Antibacterial performance and cytotoxicity were assessed using the spread plate method, MTT assay and live/dead staining experiment. The results showed that the corrosion current density of the MAO/PMTMS@(Hemin-CaP) coating (4.41 × 10−8 A·cm−2) was decreased by two orders of magnitude compared to that of pure Mg (3.12 × 10−6 A·cm−2). Photoactivated antibacterial efficiencies of the Hemin-CaP microspheres and MAO/PMTMS@(Hemin-CaP) coating reached about 99% and 92%, respectively, which we attributed to the photothermal and photodynamic properties of hemin with a porphyrin ring. Moreover, based on the release of Fe3+ ions, the MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts’ viability reached up to 125% after a 72 h culture, indicating a positive effect of the coating in promoting cell growth. Thus, this novel composite coating holds a promising application as bone implants.

Traditionally, writing quality is measured by human ratings, either holistically or analytically. The present study aimed to investigate the locus of human ratings by analyzing the linguistic features that are predictive of writing quality. One hundred and 44 argumentative writing samples from Chinese learners of English as a foreign language were evaluated by human ratings and quantitative measurement of writing quality indexed by Coh-Metrix. Holistic and analytic human ratings had significant correlations with quantitative measures related to syntactic variety and transformation. Moreover, linear and logistic regressions revealed that syntactic simplicity, words before main verb, syntactic structure similarity in all sentences and across paragraphs, incidence of passive voice and temporal connectives were five valid indices that can consistently differentiate writing quality indexed by human ratings. The present findings have significant pedagogical implications for human ratings on writing quality in the foreign language learning context.

Event detection by discovering frequent itemsets is very popular in sensor network communities. However, the recorded data is often a probability rather than a determined value in a really productive environment as sensed data is often affected by noise. In this paper, we study to detect events by finding frequent patterns over probabilistic sensor data under the Possible World Semantics. This is technically challenging as probabilistic records can generate an exponential number of possible worlds. Although several efficient algorithms are proposed in the literature, it is still difficult to mine probabilistic maximal frequent items (PMFIs) in large uncertain database due to the high time complexity. To address this issue, we employ approximate idea to further reduce the time complexity from O(nlogn) to O(n) and propose a two-step solution (Aproximation Probabilistic Frequent Itemset-MAX, APFI-MAX in short) including PMFI candidates generation and PMFIs confirmation. We also provide the necessary proofs of our approximation method to make APFI-MAX more solid and convincing. Finally, extensive experiments have been conducted on synthetic and real databases, demonstrating that the proposed APFI-MAX always running faster than state-of-art methods under different parameter settings.

A novel integrated optical ultrasound sensor based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform is proposed, theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. By using a selectively etched SOI microring resonator in an add-drop structure, the technique provides a linear and distortion-free sensing response to the ultrasound signal as it prevents the coupling region deformation and removes variations from the power fluctuation of the optical source. The proof-of-concept experimental demonstration of the proposed sensor shows the detection of air-coupled ultrasound pressure at different frequencies and magnitudes, a frequency sensing resolution of 30 Hz and a wide acceptance angle around 75 degrees.

Abstract Background Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) infection can cause acute inflammation. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in a number of biological process including inflammation response. However, whether lncRNAs participate in TGEV-induced inflammation in porcine intestinal epithelial cells (IPECs) is largely unknown. Results In this study, the next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology was used to analyze the profiles of lncRNAs in Mock and TGEV-infected porcine intestinal epithelial cell-jejunum 2 (IPEC-J2) cell line. A total of 106 lncRNAs were differentially expressed. Many differentially expressed lncRNAs act as elements to competitively attach microRNAs (miRNAs) which target to messenger RNA (mRNAs) to mediate expression of genes that related to toll-like receptors (TLRs), NOD-like receptors (NLRs), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and RIG-I-like receptors (RLRs) pathways. Functional analysis of the binding proteins and the up/down-stream genes of the differentially expressed lncRNAs revealed that lncRNAs were principally related to inflammatory response. Meanwhile, we found that the differentially expressed lncRNA TCONS_00058367 might lead to a reduction of phosphorylation of transcription factor p65 (p-p65) in TGEV-infected IPEC-J2 cells by negatively regulating its antisense gene promyelocytic leukemia (PML). Conclusions The data showed that differentially expressed lncRNAs might be involved in inflammatory response induced by TGEV through acting as miRNA sponges, regulating their up/down-stream genes, or directly binding proteins.

Abstract Background Endovascular rescue of failed infrarenal repair (EVAR) has emerged as an attractive option to stent graft explantation. The procedure, however, is underutilized due to limited devices accessibility and the challenges associated with their implantation in this patient population. The purpose of this study was to report our outcomes and discuss our approach to rescuing previously failed infrarenal endovascular aneurysm repairs (EVAR) with fenestrated/branched endografts (f/b-EVAR). Methods A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data of consecutive patients with failed EVAR rescued with f/b-EVAR at our institution from November 2013 to March 2019 was conducted. The study primary end point was technical success; defined as the implantation of the device with no type I a/b or type III endoleak or conversion to open repair. Secondary endpoints included major adverse events (MAEs), graft patency and reintervention rates. Results During this time, 202 patients with complex aortic aneurysms were treated with f/b-EVAR. Of these, 19 patients (Male: 17, mean age 79 ± 7 years) underwent repair for failed EVAR. The median time from failed repair to f/b-EVAR was 48 (30, 60) months. Treatment failure was attributed to stent graft migration in 9 (47.4%) patients, disease progression in 5 (26.3%), short initial neck in 3 (15.8%) and unable to be determined in 2 (10.5%). Three patients were treated urgently with surgeon modified stent graft. Technical success was achieved in 18 patients (95%), including two who had undergone emergent repair for rupture. Seventy-two targeted vessels (97.3%) were successfully incorporated. Sixteen (84.2%) patients required a thoracoabdominal repair to achieve a durable seal. Major adverse events (MAEs) occurred in 3 patients (15.7%) including paralysis and death in one (5.3%), compartment syndrome and temporary dialysis in another and laparotomy with snorkeling of one renal and bypass of the other in the third patient. Median (IQR) hospital length of stay was 3 (2, 4) days. Late reintervention, primary target vessel patency and primary assisted patency rates were 5.3%, 98.6% and 100%, respectively. Conclusion Implantation of f/b-EVAR in patients with failed previous EVAR is a challenging undertaking that can be performed safely with a high technical success and low reintervention rates.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) has been recognized as an important method for the evaluation of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) technology is becoming an important branch of it. The development of novel materials and tiny nano-formulations has further expanded ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) into the field of nanotechnology. Over the years, nanoscale contrast agents have been found to play an unexpected role in the integration of precise imaging for diagnosis and treatment of numerous diseases. It has been demonstrated that nanoscale UCAs (nUCAs) have advantages in imaging over conventional contrast agents, including superior biocompatibility, serum stability, and longer lifetime. The potential value of nUCAs in the musculoskeletal system is that they provide more reliable and clinically valuable guidance for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of related diseases. The frontier of advances in nUCAs, their applications, and insights in MSKUS are reviewed in this paper.

In this paper, we propose a new optimal control model for uncertain systems with jump. In the model, the background-state variables are incorporated, where the background-state variables are governed by an uncertain differential equation. Meanwhile, the state variables are governed by another uncertain differential equation with jump, in which both the background-state variables and the control variables are involved. Under the optimistic value criterion, using uncertain dynamic programming method, we establish the principle and the equation of optimality. As an application, the optimal investment strategy and optimal payment rate for DC pension plans are given, where the corresponding background-state variables represent the salary process. This application in DC pension plans illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed model.

The aim of this systematic review and network meta-analysis was to evaluate the comparative efficacy and safety of antiplatelet agents, vitamin K antagonist (VKA) and non-VKA oral anticoagulants (NOACs) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched to identify clinical trials comparing antiplatelet drugs with VKA and NOACs or their combination in AF patients undergoing PCI with a mean/median follow-up of at least 12 months. A network meta-analysis was conducted to directly and indirectly compare the efficacy and safety of competitive antithrombotic regimens with a Bayesian random-effects model. Results were presented as relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).A total of 15 studies enrolling 13,104 patients were included. Among 5 regimens, rivaroxaban 15 mg daily plus P2Y12 inhibitor treatment demonstrated significant superiority over dual- and triple-antiplatelet therapies (DAPT, TT) in reducing thromboembolic events (0.64 [0.38, 0.95] and 0.68 [0.43, 0.98], respectively) but showed the maximum possibility of major bleeding risk, while VKA plus single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) seemed the safest. Significantly less risk of major bleeding was seen in DAPT group than that in TT group (0.63 [0.39, 0.99]).The present study suggests that combination of VKA and SAPT is the best choice for AF patients undergoing PCI considering both efficacy and safety. Rivaroxaban 2.5 mg twice daily plus DAPT treatment owns the highest probability to be the optimal alternative to VKA plus SAPT for these patients.

PURPOSE: Metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC), as one of the most immunogenic tumors has been the focus of adoptive cellular immunotherapy (ACI), but the effects of ACI on objective response and survival in patients with mRCC are still controversial. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to address this issue. METHODS: A search was conducted in the PubMed database for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with ACI in mRCC. All included articles in this study were assessed according to the selection criteria and were divided into two groups: ACI versus no ACI. Outcomes were toxicity, objective response, 1-, 3- and 5-year survival. Risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using a fixed-effects meta-analysis. Heterogeneity was measured by value of I(2) or P. RESULTS: 4 studies (469 patients) were included. Most of ACI-related adverse reactions were grade 1 or 2 and reversible. ACI provided significant benefit in terms of objective response (RR = 1.65; 95% CI, 1.15 to 2.38; P = 0.007, I(2) = 49%), 1-year survival (RR = 1.30; 95% CI, 1.12 to 1.52; P = 0.0008, I(2) = 0%), 3-year survival (RR = 2.76; 95% CI, 1.85 to 4.14; P

Aims: Whether dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) animal models undergo self-healing remains unclear. Therefore, the study aim was to determine if these models have self-healing ability., Main Methods: UC was induced using 4% DSS in male KM mice. Histopathological and inflammatory cytokine were evaluated. Fecal samples were analyzed by 16S rDNA gene sequencing., Key Findings: Physiological and inflammatory cytokine changed obviously on days 4-14 of establishment and returned to normal levels by day 21. The degrees of inflammation and injury in pathological sections decreased within 14 days compared with those on day 7. Interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-6, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels fluctuated daily and were highest at 10 AM, 11 AM, and 8 PM, respectively. Intestinal flora disturbance was most obvious on days 7 and 14. The abundances of Lactobacillus and Alistipes decreased, whereas those of Streptococcus, Escherichia-Shigella, and Oscillibacter increased and mostly recovered by day 21. Lactobacillus and serum CRP level were negatively correlated with inflammation, whereas Streptococcus and Escherichia-Shigella were positively correlated with serum IL-6 level., Significance: The DSS-induced UC murine model was shown to undergo self-healing. Fluid shear stress (FSS) is a ubiquitous mechanical stimulus that potently promotes osteoblast proliferation. Previously, we reported that extracellular signal-regulated kinase 5 (ERK5) is essential for FSS-induced osteoblast proliferation. However, the precise mechanism by which FSS promotes osteoblast proliferation via ERK5 activation is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to determine the critical role of Gαq in FSS-induced ERK5 phosphorylation and osteoblast proliferation, as well as the downstream targets of the Gαq-ERK5 pathway. MC3T3-E1 cells were transfected with 50 nM Gαq siRNA, treated with 5 mM XMD8-92 (a highly selective inhibitor of ERK5 activity), and/or exposed to FSS (12 dyn/cm(2)). Cell proliferation was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The protein expression levels of Gαq, P-ERK5, ERK5, Cyclin B1, and CDK1 were analyzed by Western blot. Physiological FSS exposure for 60 min remarkably promoted MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation, however, this effect was suppressed by siRNA-mediated Gαq knockdown or inhibition of ERK5 activity by XMD8-92 treatment, suggesting that Gαq and ERK5 might modulate FSS-increased osteoblast proliferation. Furthermore, ERK5 phosphorylation was dramatically inhibited by Gαq siRNA. In addition, our study further revealed that FSS treatment of MC3T3-E1 cells for 60 min markedly upregulated the protein expression levels of Cyclin B1 and CDK1, and this increased expression was predominantly blocked by Gαq siRNA or XMD8-92 treatment. We propose that FSS acts on the Gαq-ERK5 signaling pathway to upregulate Cyclin B1 and CDK1 expression, thereby resulting in MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation. Thus, the Gαq-ERK5 signaling pathway may provide useful information regarding the treatment of bone metabolic disease.

TNF-α is known to induce osteoblasts apoptosis, whereas mechanical stimulation has been shown to enhance osteoblast survival. In the present study, we found that mechanical stimulation in the form of fluid shear stress (FSS) suppresses TNF-α induced apoptosis in MC3T3-E1 cells. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase 5 (ERK5) is a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family that has been implicated in cell survival. We also demonstrated that FSS imposed by flow chamber in vitro leads to a markedly activation of ERK5, which was shown to be protective against TNF-α-induced apoptosis, whereas the transfection of siRNA against ERK5 (ERK5-siRNA) reversed the FSS-medicated anti-apoptotic effects. An initial FSS-mediated activation of ERK5 that phosphorylates AKT to increase its activity, and a following forkhead box O 3a (FoxO3a) was phosphorylated by activated AKT. Phosphorylated FoxO3a is sequestered in the cytoplasm, and prevents it from translocating to nucleus where it can increase the expression of FasL and Bim. The inhibition of AKT-FoxO3a signalings by a PI3K (PI3-kinase)/AKT inhibitor (LY294002) or the transfection of ERK5-siRNA led to the nuclear translocation of non-phosphorylated FoxO3a, and increased the protein expression of FasL and Bim. In addition, the activation of caspase-3 by TNF-α was significantly inhibited by aforementioned FSS-medicated mechanisms. In brief, the activation of ERK5-AKT-FoxO3a signaling pathways by FSS resulted in a decreased expression of FasL and Bim and an inhibition of caspase-3 activation, which exerts a protective effect that prevents osteoblasts from apoptosis., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Fluid shear stress (FSS) is a potent mechanical stimulus and prevents cells from TNF-a-induced apoptosis. Recently, Extracellular-signal-regulated kinase 5 (ERK5) has been found to be involved in regulation of cell survival. However, little is known about the role of ERK5 signaling pathway in FSS-mediated anti-apoptotic effects in osteoblast. In this study, we show that FSS blocks TNF-a-induced apoptosis of MC3T3-E1 cells via ERK5 signaling pathway. We found that physiological FSS for 1 h significantly decreased TNF-α-induced MC3T3-E1 cells apoptosis. After inhibition of ERK5 activity by XMD8-92, a highly-selective inhibitor of ERK5 activity, the ability of FSS to inhibit TNF-α induced apoptosis was significantly decreased. Analysis of anti-apoptotic mechanisms indicated that exposure of MC3T3-E1 cells to FSS for 1 h increased phosphorylation of Bad and inhibited caspase-3 activity. After treatment with XMD8-92, phosphorylation of Bad by FSS was significantly blocked, but caspase-3 activity was increased. In summary, these findings indicated that FSS inhibits TNF-α-mediated signaling events in osteoblast by a mechanism dependent on activation of ERK5, and Bad is a crucial downstream target for ERK5. Those results implied that ERK5 signaling pathway play a crucial role in FSS-mediated anti-apoptotic effect in osteoblast. Adiponectin is an adipocyte-specific adipocytokine that possesses anti-atherogenic and anti-diabetic properties. It has been shown to have a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system, but it remains to be elucidated whether adiponectin has a therapeutic effect on vascular damage induced by the potential vasoactive substance angiotensin II (Ang II). In this study, the effects of adiponectin on Ang II-induced vascular endothelial damage were investigated. In cultured human umbilical vein endothelium cells, Ang II stimulation increased generation of ROS and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, both of which were clearly restored by administration of adiponectin. In addition, administration of adiponectin was found to increase cell viability and prevent apoptosis. Our results also demonstrate that the protective effects of adiponectin against Ang II-induced vascular endothelial damage are dependent on the binding of adiponectin to its cell surface receptor 1. Importantly, we found that adiponectin treatment modulates the apoptotic pathway by reducing the expression of LOX-1, up-regulating both cIAP-1 and the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax. Finally, our data displayed that the protective effects of adiponectin against Ang II cytotoxicity depend on AMPK activation mediated by the endosomal adaptor protein, adaptor protein with phosphotyrosine binding, pleckstrin homology domains, and leucine zipper motif.
