Following spinal cord injury (SCI), the transmission of electrical signals is interrupted, and an oxidative microenvironment is generated, hindering nerve regeneration and functional recovery. The strategies of regulating oxidative pathological microenvironment while restoring endogenous electrical signal transmission hold promise for SCI treatment. However, challenges are still faced in simply fabricating bioactive scaffolds with both antioxidation and conductivity. Herein, aiming to construct an antioxidative and conductive microenvironment for nerve regeneration, the difunctional polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles were developed and incorporated into bioactive collagen/hyaluronan hydrogel. Owing to the embedded PPy in hydrogel, the encapsulated bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can be protected from oxidative damage, and their neuronal differentiation was promoted by the synergy between conductivity and electrical stimulation, which is proved to be related to PI3K/Akt and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. In SCI rats, the BMSC-laden difunctional hydrogel restored the transmission of bioelectric signals and inhibited secondary damage, thereby facilitating neurogenesis, resulting in prominent nerve regeneration and functional recovery. Overall, taking advantage of a difunctional nanomaterial to meet two essential requirements in SCI repair, this work provides intriguing insights into the design of biomaterials for nerve regeneration and tissue engineering.

The restoration of nerve dysfunction after traumatic brain injury (TBI) faces huge challenges due to the limited self-regenerative abilities of nerve tissues. In situ inductive recovery can be achieved utilizing biological scaffolds combined with endogenous human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HUCMSCs)-derived exosomes (MExos). In this study, brain-derived neurotrophic factor-stimulated HUCMSCs-derived exosomes (BMExos) were composited with collagen/chitosan by 3D printing technology. 3D-printed collagen/chitosan/BMExos (3D-CC-BMExos) scaffolds have excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Subsequently, in vivo experiments showed that 3D-CC-BMExos therapy could improve the recovery of neuromotor function and cognitive function in a TBI model in rats. Consistent with the behavioural recovery, the results of histomorphological tests showed that 3D-CC-BMExos therapy could facilitate the remodelling of neural networks, such as improving the regeneration of nerve fibres, synaptic connections and myelin sheaths, in lesions after TBI.

Diencephalic syndrome (DS) is a rare syndrome with failure to thrive (FTT) as the primary manifestation, which is often associated with astrocytoma or glioma and rarely caused by germinoma. To our knowledge, there are no reports of female patients presenting with DS secondary to germinoma.we report a case (an 11-year-old girl) of diencephalic syndrome presenting with FTT. She was diagnosed with severe malnutrition in the local hospital two years before admission and still did not show normal development after long-term nutritional support. Finally, after ruling out increased metabolism, inadequate caloric intake, and nutrient absorption, intracranial MRI showed a space-occupying lesion in the suprasellar cisterna-hypothalamus area. After excluding other causes of FTT, a biopsy was performed for pathological examination and demonstrated a germinoma. An excellent therapeutic effect was achieved during the three-month follow-up after radiotherapy.This case reminds us that intracranial tumors should be considered an indispensable etiology for patients with suspicious FTT, and early diagnosis and intervention may achieve a good prognosis.

Delivering electrical signals to neural cells and tissue has attracted increasing attention in the treatment of nerve injuries. Unlike traditional wired electrical stimulation, wireless and remote light stimulation provides less invasive and longer-lasting interfaces, holding great promise in the treatment of nerve injuries and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as human-computer interaction. Additionally, a bioactive matrix that bridges the injured gap and induces nerve regeneration is essential for injured nerve repair. However, it is still challenging to construct a 3D biomimetic cell niche with optoelectrical responsiveness. Herein, a bioactive platform for remote and wireless optoelectrical stimulation is established by incorporating hydrophilic poly(3-hexylthiophene) nanoparticles (P3HT NPs) into a biomimetic hydrogel matrix. Moreover, the hydrogel matrix is modified by varying the composition and/or the crosslinking degree to meet the needs of different application scenarios. When exposed to pulsed green light, P3HT NPs in hydrogels convert light signals into electrical signals, resulting in the generation of tens of picoampere photocurrent, which is proved to promote the growth of cortical neurons that covered by hydrogels and the neuronal differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) encapsulated in hydrogels. This work is of great significance for the design of next-generation neural electrodes and scaffolds.

Spontaneous recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI) is extremely limited since the severe inflammatory responses lead to secondary damage, and the diseased extracellular matrix (ECM) fails to provide inductive cues for nerve regeneration. To address these dilemmas, herein, we propose a biomaterial-based strategy combining neuroprotection and neuroinduction for SCI repair. Taking advantage of a microfluidic chip, we constructed imine-crosslinked aldehyde-methacrylate-hyaluronan/collagen hybrid hydrogel microfibers incorporating interleukin 4 (IL-4)-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles (IL4@ZIF-8 NPs). The hybrid hydrogel microfibers possess pivotal traits mimicking the natural ECM and hold neuroinductive nanoalignment and viscoelasticity, as well as the acidic microenvironment-responsive release of neuroprotective IL-4. Then, we elucidated the role of the tailored hydrogel microfibers in promoting the structural and functional recovery of SCI rats. The implanted hydrogel microfibers incorporating IL4@ZIF-8 NPs protected endogenous neural cells by promoting M2 polarization of recruited macrophages and suppressing inflammation. Additionally, the hydrogel microfibers enhanced neuronal differentiation, accelerated axonal regrowth, synapse formation and remyelination, resulting from their ECM-mimicking oriented nano-topography and viscoelasticity. Moreover, the locomotor function was also improved by the implanted microfibers combining neuroprotective cues and neuroinductive cues. This work not only paves the steps for the development of a novel class of multifunctional hydrogels that manipulate tissue behavior by modifying the cellular microenvironment but also provides intriguing insights for the repair of SCI and even other central nervous system (CNS) injuries

Objective To evaluate the clinical outcomes of oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) in conjunction with unilateral pedicle screw fixation (UPSF) via the Wiltse approach in treating degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS). Methods The article is a retrospective analysis. Twelve patients with DLS who underwent combined OLIF and UPSF between July 2017 and December 2018 were included. The study included 2 male and 10 female patients, with a mean age at the time of the operation of 67.2 ± 9.1 years. The surgical characteristics and complications were evaluated. The clinical and radiological data such as the correction of deformity, coronal and sagittal profile were analyzed. Results The mean follow‐up time of the study was 26.8 ± 1.8 months. At the final follow‐up, all patients who underwent combined OLIF and UPSF achieved statistically significant improvements in coronal Cobb angle (from 19.6° ± 4.8° to 6.9° ± 3.8°, P, OLIF in conjunction with UPSF seems to be a valuable surgical tool for the minimally invasive correction of coronal and sagittal plane deformities in patients with moderate degenerative lumbar scoliosis. It is a minimally invasive procedure that yields good radiographic and clinical results without any major complications.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the therapy effects of a novel biological scaffold containing heparin, collagen and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in treating traumatic brain injury (TBI). In our research, a functional composite scaffold constituted by collagen, heparin and vascular endothelial growth factor was used to stimulate angiogenesis and improve nerve-tissue regeneration in a rat model of TBI. The composite scaffold possessed excellent mechanical properties and good porosity, and could effectively control the release rate of VEGF. Motor and cognitive functions such as motor evoked potential, Morris water maze test and modified neurological severity score were evidently improved after the scaffold was grafted onto the injury site in the rat TBI model. There was clearly improved restoration of damaged nerve tissue at the injured site. Furthermore, brain edema and inflammatory reactions were significantly alleviated. Newly formed neurons with associated synaptic structures, nerve fibers, myelin sheaths and functional angiogenesis with intact endothelium at the injury site were observed. In conclusion, our data revealed that the collagen/heparin scaffold combined with VEGF could create excellent microenvironment stimuli for damaged nerve-tissue regeneration, providing a potential strategy for treating TBI.

Rationale: The combination of medical and tissue engineering in neural regeneration studies is a promising field. Collagen, silk fibroin and seed cells are suitable options and have been widely used in the repair of spinal cord injury. In this study, we aimed to determine whether the implantation of a complex fabricated with collagen/silk fibroin (SF) and the human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) can promote cerebral cortex repair and motor functional recovery in a canine model of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods: A porous scaffold was fabricated with cross-linked collagen and SF. Its physical properties and degeneration rate were measured. The scaffolds were co-cultured with hUCMSCs after which an implantable complex was formed. After complex implantation to a canine model of TBI, the motor evoked potential (MEP) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were used to evaluate the integrity of the cerebral cortex. The neurologic score, motion capture, surface electromyography (sEMG), and vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) were measured in the analysis of motor functions. In vitro analysis of inflammation levels was performed by Elisa while immunohistochemistry was used in track the fate of hUCMSCs. In situ hybridization, transmission electron microscope, and immunofluorescence were used to assess neural and vascular regeneration. Results: Favorable physical properties, suitable degradation rate, and biocompatibility were observed in the collagen/SF scaffolds. The group with complex implantation exhibited the best cerebral cortex integrity and motor functions. The implantation also led to the regeneration of more blood vessels and nerve fibers, less glial fibers, and inflammatory factors. Conclusion: Implantation of this complex enhanced therapy in traumatic brain injury (TBI) through structural repair and functional recovery. These effects exhibit the translational prospects for the clinical application of this complex.

Preoperative chemoradiotherapy remains part of the standard treatment for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. Subsequent treatment individualization requires accurate prediction of tumor response to chemoradiotherapy. Three-dimensional endorectal ultrasound (3D-ERUS) can automatically capture and store the images of the rectal wall and rectal cancer with high resolution. In this study, we aimed to assess the correlation and predictive value between tumor volume changes measured on 3D-ERUS and the histopathological tumor response after chemoradiotherapy for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer.A total of 54 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who underwent chemoradiotherapy and had complete 3D-ERUS data pre-and post-chemoradiotherapy were enrolled in the study. The tumor volume pre-and post-chemoradiotherapy was measured manually on 3D-ERUS, and the tumor volume reduction ratio was calculated. The histopathological tumor regression grade (TRG) was used to assess tumor response. The differences in volumetry parameters were compared between groups with varying tumor response. The diagnostic efficacy of the tumor volume reduction ratio was evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve.The mean age of all patients was 55.19±12.46 years. The relative proportions of TRG 0-3 were 29.6% (16/54), 16.6% (9/54), 50% (27/54), and 3.8% (2/54), respectively. To evaluate the effect of a nitrification inhibitor on reducing N2O emissions from saline soils, we undertook a field plot experiment with three salinity levels (non-saline, NS = 0.21 dS m−1; low saline, LS = 1.02 dS m−1; and high saline, HS = 5.23 dS m−1), factorially combined with two nitrification inhibitor treatments (with and without DMPP (3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate)). The low saline soil had the highest N2O flux peak and its cumulative N2O emissions were 2.2-fold those of the non-saline soil and 3.1-fold those of the high saline soil. Low salinity strongly inhibited nitrite oxidation and only slightly inhibited ammonia oxidation, which resulted in a high accumulation of NO2−-N and high N2O emissions. An important element of the hydrologic cycle, the hydrometeorological parameter of evapotranspiration (ET), is critical in the development of effective water resources planning and irrigation scheduling. The ET varies in response to changes in resistance at the canopy surface rc and soil moisture content θ, especially under water-saving irrigation (WSI) practices. Drawing on data collected by eddy covariance in WSI rice paddies in eastern China in 2015 and 2016, variations in ET were studied by calculating and analyzing hourly canopy resistance and daily canopy resistance . Discrepancies were noted between true daily ET with respect to the estimated daily ET at different periods [0700–1600 local time (UTC + 8)]. To estimate in the WSI rice fields, the mean value between 0900 and 1000 LT, and between 1000 and 1100 LT performed considerably better than for a single time. Seasonal estimated ET can be accurately calculated by interpolating at different time intervals, thereby achieving a greater correlation and consistency at 2-day intervals. Then a generalized two-segment line of variation was used to calculate , achieving good results and showing that in the absence of observational data, could be easily calculated through a simplified pattern of variability. In conclusion, an ET temporal upscaling method for a WSI paddy, based on variation in and values, was optimized and is recommended for local application. Future work will focus on temporal upscaling of ET by extrapolating remote sensing instantaneous estimates to daily values.

In order to explore the prognostic value of CD2, CD4, and human leucocyte antigen-DR (HLA-DR) expression and Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3-internal tandem duplication (FLT3-ITD) mutation in leukemia cells in the bone marrow of patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), we retrospectively collected and analyzed the immunophenotype, molecular features and clinical characteristics of 219 newly diagnosed adult patients with APL in Henan Provincial People's Hospital from January 2010 to December 2019. It turned out that the relapse rates of patients with CD2, CD4, or HLA-DR expression and the early mortality rates of patients with CD2 expression, HLA-DR expression, or FLT3-ITD mutation were higher than those of their counterparts. Moreover, reduced overall survival was found for patients who showed CD2 expression, HLA-DR expression or FLT3-ITD mutation. Therefore, CD2 expression, HLA-DR expression and FLT3-ITD mutation were adverse prognostic factors in adults with APL.

Knowledge concerning the response of soil carbon transformation to soil moisture and salinity is essential for saline soil improvements and utilization. An incubation experiment with three moisture levels (50, 75 and 100% of field capacity) and six salinity levels (soil electrical conductivity of 1 : 5 soil suspension as 0.25, 1.01, 2.02, 3.21, 4.92 and 6.17 dS m–1 for S1, S2, S3, S4, S5 and S6 treatment) was conducted with the purpose to investigate the effect of moisture and salinity on soil respiration (SR) and soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC). Both soil salinity and soil moisture significantly impact SR and SMBC, yet the interaction effect between them was not significant either for SR, or SMBC. SR and SMBC were found to positively correlate with soil moisture but increased first and then decreased along with increasing soil salinity with the maximum values observed at S3 and S2 salinity levels, respectively. It was found significantly higher at S1 or S2 than at S5 or S6 salinity levels. Furthermore, soil moisture was found to be the predominant factor with significant higher effect than soil salinity levels in determining the variation of SR and SMBC. The results suggested that both the active and total soil microbial communities slightly increased when soil salinity was low (0.25 to 1.01 or 2.02 dS m–1), while they were adversely affected by higher salinity (4.92 and 6.17 dS m–1). In addition, the reduction in SR at high salinity and low moisture levels is mostly caused by reduction in SMBC as it was found significantly correlated to SR.

The secretome secreted by stem cells and bioactive material has emerged as a promising therapeutic choice for traumatic brain injury (TBI). We aimed to determine the effect of 3D-printed collagen/chitosan/secretome derived from human umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells scaffolds (3D-CC-ST) on the injured tissue regeneration process. 3D-CC-ST was performed using 3D printing technology at a low temperature (−20°C), and the physical properties and degeneration rate were measured. The utilization of low temperature contributed to a higher cytocompatibility of fabricating porous 3D architectures that provide a homogeneous distribution of cells. Immediately after the establishment of the canine TBI model, 3D-CC-ST and 3D-CC (3D-printed collagen/chitosan scaffolds) were implanted into the cavity of TBI. Following implantation of scaffolds, neurological examination and motor evoked potential detection were performed to analyze locomotor function recovery. Histological and immunofluorescence staining were performed to evaluate neuro-regeneration. The group treated with 3D-CC-ST had good performance of behavior functions. Implanting 3D-CC-ST significantly reduced the cavity area, facilitated the regeneration of nerve fibers and vessel reconstruction, and promoted endogenous neuronal differentiation and synapse formation after TBI. The implantation of 3D-CC-ST also markedly reduced cell apoptosis and regulated the level of systemic inflammatory factors after TBI.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing incidence of breast cancer, breast cancer patients suffered from psychological problems in different degrees. There was no unified conclusion on whether psychological intervention nursing can improve the quality of life (QOL) of breast cancer patients. This meta-analysis aimed to explore the impact of psychological nursing interventions on the quality of life of breast cancer patients. METHODS: We retrieved related articles from both English databases (including PubMed, Medline, and Embase) and Chinese databases [including China Biology Medicine DISC (CBMdisc), China National Knowledge Network (CNKI), Wanfang, and China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP]. All of the databases were searched using a combination of the following search terms: psychological intervention nursing, psychological nursing, psychotherapy, breast loss, radical mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy, and quality of life. The quality of the included literature was assessed using RevMan 5.3 provided by the Cochrane system. A reliable electrophysiological electrode interface (EEI) between bioelectronic devices and biological tissues is indispensable to achieve the high fidelity recording of bioelectricity. However, there is an inherent tradeoff among EEI's electrochemical characteristics, mechanical properties and biocompatibility when considering the desired nanostructure and optimum composition. Here, we proposed a mechanically matched, highly conductive and biocompatible EEI, a tissue-like metal-doped hydrogel which could enable excellent electro-biosensing, by bringing disulfide modified silver nanowires into difunctional hyaluronan/carboxymethyl chitosan composite. The intensity of cortical signals at specific frequency domain recorded by the hydrogel-based EEI is doubled, which is significant for the diagnosis of epilepsy. Furthermore, the natural gel matrix could lead to seamless bio-integration between EEI and the tissue site of interest, minimizing signal dissipation without causing obvious inflammatory response. Overall, the EEI we designed contributes to improving tissue-device integration as well as bioelectronic device's performance and further leads to more effective human-computer interfaces.

This study aims to evaluate the biomechanical stability of a novel lateral plate (NLP) that can be used in oblique lateral lumbar fusion (OLIF).In vitro biomechanical tests were performed on 6 fresh calf lumbar vertebrae specimens. The surgical segment was set at L3-L4. Each specimen was tested in the following order: intact state (INT); OLIF cage only/stand-alone (SA); cage supplemented with lateral screw-rod (LSR); cage supplemented with novel lateral plate (NLP); and cage supplemented with unilateral or bilateral pedicle screw-rod (UPS or BPS). A pure moment of ±7.5 Nm was applied to the specimen to produce 6 different motion directions, including flexion and extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation, and the range of motion (ROM) of L3-L4 in each direction was recorded.In addition to flexion-extension, NLP reduced the ROM of SA (P0.05). In flexion-extension, the ROM of NLP was similar to those of SA and LSR (P0.05); compared to pedicle screw-rod (PSD), the ROM of NLP was higher (P0.05). In lateral bending, the ROM of NLP was close to that of LSR and PSD (P0.05). In axial rotation, the ROM of NLP was higher than that of PSD (P0.05), and close to that of LSR (P0.05).NLP can enhance surgical segment stability in all directions of motion, similar to LSR, but weaker than UPS and BPS in flexion-extension and rotation.

Objectives Necroptosis is widespread in neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we examined necroptosis in the hippocampus and cortex after hydrocephalus and found that a necroptosis pathway inhibitor alleviates necroptosis and provides neuroprotective effects. Materials and methods Hydrocephalus was induced in C57BL/6 mice by kaolin. Haematoxylin and eosin (HE), Nissl, PI and Fluoro‐Jade B (FJB) staining were used for general observations. Phosphorylated receptor‐interacting protein kinase 3 (p‐RIP3) and phosphorylated mixed lineage kinase domain‐like (p‐MLKL) were measured by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe ependymal cilia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the Morris water maze (MWM) test were used to assess neurobehavioral changes. Immunofluorescence was used to detect microglial and astrocyte activation. Inflammatory cytokines were measured by Western blotting and RT‐PCR. Results Obvious pathological changes appeared in the hippocampus and cortex after hydrocephalus, and expression of the necroptosis markers p‐RIP3, p‐MLKL and inflammatory cytokines increased. Necrostatin‐1 (Nec‐1) and GSK872 reduced necrotic cell death, attenuated p‐RIP3 and p‐MLKL levels, slightly improved neurobehaviours and inhibited microglial and astrocyte activation and inflammation. Conclusions RIP1/RIP3/MLKL mediates necroptosis in the cortex and hippocampus in a hydrocephalus mouse model, and Nec‐1 and GSK872 have some neuroprotective effects., After hydrocephalus, RIP1 recruits and promotes RIP3 phosphorylation. Then, a body consisting of RIP1, RIP3 and MLKL is formed. MLKL is phosphorylated by p‐RIP3, located at position 357 of threonine and position 358 of serine, and is considered to be the executor of necroptosis. p‐MLKL finally leads to the exposure of cells by changing permeabilization in plasma membrane and result in necrosis of the cell. However, the effects were improved after the use necroptosis inhibitors Nec‐1 and GSK872.

Electrical stimulation is regarded pivotal to promote repair of nerve injuries, however, failed to get extensive application in vivo due to the challenges in noninvasive electrical loading accompanying with construction of biomimetic cell niche. Herein, a new concept of magneto responsive electric 3D matrix for remote and wireless electrical stimulation is demonstrated. By the preparation of magnetoelectric core/shell structured Fe3 O4 @BaTiO3 NPs-loaded hyaluronan/collagen hydrogels, which recapitulate considerable magneto-electricity and vital features of native neural extracellular matrix, the enhancement of neurogenesis both in cellular level and spinal cord injury in vivo with external pulsed magnetic field applied is proved. The findings pave the way for a novel class of remote controlling and delivering electricity through extracellular niches-mimicked hydrogel network, arising prospects not only in neurogenesis but also in human-computer interaction with higher resolution.

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) combined with unilateral (UPSF) and bilateral pedicle screw fixation (BPSF) in the treatment of multi-level degenerative lumbar disease (LDD).Methods: We conducted a prospective study from May 2016 to June 2018. A total of 81 LDD patients were randomized into groups. The first group involving 39 patients received OLIF combined with USPF (UPS group), and the second group of 41 patients received OLIF combined with BPSF (BPS group). The perioperative conditions included intraoperative bleeding, operating time, average hospital stay, and hospitalization expenses. The clinical outcomes included Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and complications. Moreover, the radiological outcomes included disc height, fusion rate, and cage subsidence rate. These perioperative conditions, clinical outcomes, and radiological conditions of the two study groups were evaluated and compared. All the patients were followed up for 24 to 28 months, with an average follow-up time of 26 months.Results: The intraoperative bleeding, operating time, and hospitalization expenses of the UPS group were significantly less compared with those of the BPS group. Compared with preoperatively, the VAS and ODI scores of the two groups were improved significantly after the operation. At 6 months after operation, the VAS score for back pain and ODI of the UPS group were better than in the BPS group (P < 0.05). Both groups were able to maintain the intervertebral space height of the fusion segment, and there was no significant difference in the fusion rate at the 24 months. There were no significant differences in complications. At the 24 months, there was no significant difference in the cage subsidence of the fusion segment between the two groups. Finally, there was no loose screw and screw fracture in both groups.Conclusions: OLIF combined with UPSF is an effective and reliable surgical method for the treatment of multilevel LDD.

The model is effectively applied in China’s inspection and certification e-commerce service cloud platform - CCTEK, could provide detailed guidance for inspection and certification e-commerce platform, which promotes the inspection and certification e-commerce platform using personalized recommendation and other big data technology to achieve precision marketing.
