15. Dynamic Assessment of Road Network Vulnerability Based on Cell Transmission Model

Abstract

The road network maintaining stability is critical for guaranteeing urban traffic function. Therefore, the vulnerable links need to be identified accurately. Previous vulnerability research under static condition compared the operating states of the old equilibrium before the event and the new equilibrium after the event to assess vulnerability ignoring the dynamic variation process. Does road network vulnerability change over time? This paper combines the vulnerability assessment with the traffic flow evolution process, exploring the road network vulnerability evaluation from the perspective of time dimension. More accurate identification and evaluation of vulnerable nodes and links can help to strengthen the ability of road network resisting disturbances. A modified dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) model is established for dynamic path selection (reselect the shortest path at the end of each link) based on the dynamic user optimal (DUO) principle. A modified cell transmission model is established to simulate the traffic flow evolution processes. The cumulative and time-varying index of vulnerability assessment is established from the viewpoint of traveler's time loss. Then the road network vulnerability assessment combined the traffic flow model with the vulnerability index. The road network vulnerability assessment of Bao'an Central District of Shenzhen, China, reveals that road network vulnerability does contain a dynamic process, and vulnerable links in each phase can be exactly identified by the model. Results showed that the road network would have a large vulnerability during the disordered phase when the main road fails. 17. Evaluation of Motorway Lane Control Strategies for Mixed Flow of Autonomous and Human-Driven Vehicles

Abstract

The introduction of automated vehicles (AVs) is commonly expected to improve different aspects of transportation. A long transition period in which AVs will coexist with human-driven vehicles (HVs) is expected until AVs become prevalent. Dedicated lane strategy is considered an effective way to improve road capacity and promote AV use. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on when and how to implement lane management strategies, and further verification is needed to determine to what extent lane management strategies will affect traffic flow. The dedicated lane strategy will first be applied in highway scenarios, and the merging area is an important zone prone to congestion on highways. There are many impacts of AV on the merging area of highways, but research on the issue that the traffic flow is continually affected after the completion of merging is still lacking. Therefore, this study establishes a lane control strategies framework to investigate the effect on road capacity on the multilane freeway after the merging area. This paper explores the traffic performance of three different lane control strategies with mixed AV/HV traffic flow and investigate when the tested strategies make sense and how sensitive they are to varying AV rates and demands. Specifically, using the open-source microscopic traffic simulation tool SUMO, this study investigates the impacts on traffic performance in terms of throughput, travel time and space mean speed on two-lane motorways at increasing penetration rates of AVs. Moreover, three different lane control strategies (two mixed lanes, one reserved AV lane, and one reserved HV lane) are compared under various demand and AV rates. The simulation results demonstrate that road capacity increases convexly with AV rates. In addition, the results show that the capacity on a one-way two-lane motorway road can be improved with appropriate lane control strategies, especially under high demand and at low to medium AV rates., QC 20230928

18. Dynamic Truck–UAV Collaboration and Integrated Route Planning for Resilient Urban Emergency Response

Abstract

Efficient urban emergency response is vital for saving lives and property after disasters. However, urban emergency response is challenging because it involves many demands, with a very tight time for making decisions, and is frequently threatened by the disruption of road networks and infrastructures. Taking these challenges into consideration, this article proposes a dynamic truck-UAV (DTU) collaboration strategy to realize efficient and resilient urban emergency response. Specifically, a DTU collaboration strategy is first proposed based on the characteristics of urban emergency management. Then, an integrated truck-UAV collaborative scheduling model is developed and indicated to be an NP-hard problem. Then, a tabu search-based integrated (TSI) scheduling algorithm is developed, with several tailored local search operators and a recursion-based evaluation (RE) algorithm. Finally, comprehensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the superiority of our proposed strategy over existing truck-UAV collaboration strategies and verify the performance of our proposed solution algorithm. Managerial Relevance Statement—This article proposes a dynamic truck-UAV (DTU) collaboration strategy and a corresponding route planning method for urban emergency response. The findings of this work demonstrate that emergency management agencies can utilize the DTU collaboration strategy for efficient emergency response in urban areas with high-density road networks. Meanwhile, the emergency response under this strategy is resilient to cope with different degrees of road network disruptions. In addition, the DTU collaboration strategy shows a distinct improvement over the parallel and truck-UAV flying sidekick strategies in large-scale emergency response scenarios, and it will perform better when demand density increases. Furthermore, the proposed integrated scheduling algorithm is demonstrated to be suitable and efficient for solving the routing problems associated with the DTU collaboration strategy.

Abstract

The section deformation distribution of reinforced concrete components is nonlinear due to the size effect. Existing analysis models such as the plastic hinge and the truss element are based on the plane cross-section assumption. The nonlinear deformation distribution of the section cannot be accurately simulated. Therefore, in this paper, non-planar strain distribution functions of sections are established. The law of the influence of geometrical characteristics and load characteristics on the nonlinear deformation distributions of the sections of the beam ends is analyzed. The quantitative method is established between the section size, position, and shear span ratio, and the nonlinear deformation distributions of sections. The finite element simulation and test results show that the non-planar strain distribution shape functions of sections given in this paper can accurately describe the axial strain distributions of different sections along the height and width of the sections. The non-planar deformation behaviors and mechanical properties of the components can be simulated. The interface connection accuracy is improved in the structural multiscale simulation. Abstract

In this paper, the concept of capacity flexibility is introduced into transit network, and the model of capacity flexibility of urban transit networks is formulated. A heuristic solution based on hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed to the model. GA-LS (Genetic algorithms with Local search) is applied to solve the model. It is also tested by a numerical example with a small transit network. The results show how the maximum additional passenger flows from each origin-destination (OD) pair are determined in a transit network and what extent the transit network supply meets the additional passenger demand in a certain level of service. These results show that the GA-LS method considerably improves the value of the objective function for same iterative times compared with the general GA, but spending more time.

Abstract

This paper presents a memetic algorithm for optimization of urban transit route network. The objective of this research is to minimize the users cost and the unsatisfied user demand. The local search operator of the memetic algorithm combines three types of moves: 2-opt moves, exchange of two stops and relocation of one stop. The move of the most direct travel passengers increased in terms of the operation time of routes is chosen as a local search to improve the convergence of the algorithm. The algorithm has been tested with problems reported in the existing literature, and the results show that the algorithm could improve the solution to the transit route network optimization problem in acceptable time and reasonable computing resources.
