To satisfy dynamic requirements of power systems, it is imperative for grid-tied inverters to ensure good disturbance rejection performance (DRP) under variable grid conditions. This letter discovers and theoretically proves that for general networks, synthesizing grid-following (GFL) inverters and grid-forming (GFM) inverters can always more effectively ensure the DRP of multiple inverters, as compared to homogeneous inverter-based systems that solely utilize either GFL or GFM inverters. The synthesis of GFL inverters and GFM inverters can concurrently increase the smallest eigenvalue and decrease the largest eigenvalue of the network grounded Laplacian matrix. This can be equivalent to rematching the proper short-circuit ratio (SCR) for GFL and GFM inverters, thereby ensuring the DRP of inverters both in weak and strong grids. The results reveal the necessity of synthesizing diverse inverter control schemes from the network-based perspective. Small-signal synchronization instability (SSI) may be triggered when a grid-connected converter is operated in weak grids. This problem is highly related to the active and reactive power (referred to as complex power) generation or consumption of the converter. Such an instability phenomenon manifests as power oscillations within the bandwidth frequency of phase-locked loop (PLL). However, in a multi-converter power system (MCPS), it is challenging to characterize the role of each converter's complex power in SSI issues due to the high dimension of system dynamics. In this paper, we focus on the impact regularity of complex power on the small-signal synchronization stability of the MCPS. Firstly, we formulate the modeling of the MCPS and develop a systematical stability indicator to explicitly quantify the stability margin under various operating complex power. Then, based on the proposed stability indicator, the "resultant force" of complex power on the stability margin of the MCPS can be analytically characterized into a weighted summation form. Furthermore, we elaborate on the impact of each converter's active power and reactive power, respectively. Notably, we demonstrate the cancellation effect between the active power generation and consumption on the stability margin, which ultimately helps prevent SSI issues in the MCPS. This paper proposes decentralized stability conditions for multi-converter systems based on the combination of the small gain theorem and the small phase theorem. Instead of directly computing the closed-loop dynamics, e.g., eigenvalues of the state-space matrix, or using the generalized Nyquist stability criterion, the proposed stability conditions are more scalable and computationally lighter, which aim at evaluating the closed-loop system stability by comparing the individual converter dynamics with the network dynamics in a decentralized and open-loop manner. Moreover, our approach can handle heterogeneous converters' dynamics and is suitable to analyze large-scale multi-converter power systems that contain grid-following (GFL), grid-forming (GFM) converters, and synchronous generators. Compared with other decentralized stability conditions, e.g., passivity-based stability conditions, the proposed conditions are significantly less conservative and can be generally satisfied in practice across the whole frequency range.

Grid-forming (GFM) control has been considered a promising solution for accommodating large-scale power electronics converters into modern power grids thanks to its grid-friendly dynamics, in particular, voltage source behavior on the AC side. The voltage source behavior of GFM converters can provide voltage support for the power grid, and therefore enhance the power grid (voltage) strength. However, grid-following (GFL) converters can also perform constant AC voltage magnitude control by properly regulating their reactive current, which may also behave like a voltage source. Currently, it still remains unclear what are the essential differences between the voltage source behaviors of GFL and GFM converters, and which type of voltage source behavior can enhance the power grid strength. In this paper, we will demonstrate that only GFM converters can provide effective voltage source behavior and enhance the power grid strength in terms of small signal dynamics. Based on our analysis, we further study the problem of how to configure GFM converters in the grid and how many GFM converters we will need. We investigate how the capacity ratio between GFM and GFL converters affects the equivalent power grid strength and thus the small signal stability of the system. We give guidelines on how to choose this ratio to achieve a desired stability margin. We validate our analysis using high-fidelity simulations.

In order to improve dynamic characteristics of the power system with high-proportion renewable energy sources (RESs), it is necessary for the voltage source converter (VSC), interfaces of RESs, to provide inertial and frequency regulation. In practical applications, VSCs are better to be controlled as a current source due to its weak overcurrent capacity. According to the characteristic, a dual synchronous theory is proposed to analyze the synchronization between current sources in this paper. Based on dual synchronous idea, a dual synchronous generator (DSG) control is applied in VSC to form inertial current source. In addition, a braking control is embedded in DSG control to improve the transient stability of VSC. Finally, experimental results verify the effectiveness of the theory and the control method.

This paper investigates how a disturbance in the power network affects the nodal frequencies of certain network buses. To begin with, we show that the inertia of a single generator is in inverse proportion to the initial rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) under disturbances. Then, we present how the initial RoCoF of the nodal frequencies are related to the inertia constants of multiple generators in a power network, which leads to a performance metric to analyze nodal frequency performance. To be specific, the proposed metric evaluates the impact of disturbances on the nodal frequency performance. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed metric are illustrated via simulations on a multi-machine power system.

Generalized short circuit ratio (gSCR) for gird strength assessment of multi-infeed high voltage direct current (MIDC) systems is a rigorous theoretical extension of traditional short circuit ratio (SCR), which allows the considerable experience of using SCR to be extended to MIDC systems. However, gSCR was originally derived based on the assumption of homogeneous MIDC systems, where all HVDC converters have an identical control configuration, which poses challenges to the applications of gSCR to inhomogeneous MIDC systems. To weaken this assumption, this letter applies modal perturbation theory to explore the possibility of applying gSCR in inhomogeneous MIDC systems. Results of numerical experiments show that, in inhomogeneous MIDC systems, the previously proposed gSCR can still be used without modification, but critical gSCR (CgSCR) needs to be redefined by considering the characteristics of HVDC converter control configurations. Accordingly, the difference between gSCR and redefined CgSCR can effectively quantify the pertinent ac grid strength in terms of static voltage stability margin. The modern power grid features the high penetration of power converters, which widely employ a phase-locked loop (PLL) for grid synchronization. However, it has been pointed out that PLL can give rise to small-signal instabilities under weak grid conditions. This problem can be potentially resolved by operating the converters in grid-forming mode, namely, without using a PLL. Nonetheless, it has not been theoretically revealed how the placement of grid-forming converters enhances the small-signal stability of power systems integrated with large-scale PLL-based converters. This paper aims at filling this gap. Based on matrix perturbation theory, we explicitly demonstrate that the placement of grid-forming converters is equivalent to increasing the power grid strength and thus improving the small-signal stability of PLL-based converters. Furthermore, we investigate the optimal locations to place grid-forming converters by increasing the smallest eigenvalue of the weighted and Kron-reduced Laplacian matrix of the power network. The analysis in this paper is validated through high-fidelity simulation studies on a modified two-area test system and a modified 39-bus test system. This paper potentially lays the foundation for understanding the interaction between PLL-based (i.e., grid-following) converters and grid-forming converters, and coordinating their placements in future converter-dominated power systems.

The modern power system features high penetration of power converters due to the development of renewables, HVDC, etc. Currently, the controller design and parameter tuning of power converters heavily rely on rich engineering experience and extrapolation from a single converter system, which may lead to inferior performance or even instabilities under variable grid conditions. In this paper, we propose an $H_{\infty}$-control design framework to provide a systematic way for the robust and optimal control design of power converters. We discuss how to choose weighting functions to achieve anticipated and robust performance with regards to multiple control objectives. Further, we show that by a proper choice of the weighting functions, the converter can be conveniently specified as grid-forming or grid-following in terms of small-signal dynamics. Moreover, this paper first proposes a decentralized stability criterion based on the small gain theorem, which enables us to guarantee the global small-signal stability of a multi-converter system through local control design of the power converters. We provide high-fidelity nonlinear simulations and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) real-time simulations to illustrate the effectiveness of our method.

Small-signal instability of grid-connected power converters may arise when the converters use a phase-locked loop (PLL) to synchronize with a weak grid. Commonly, this stability problem (referred as PLL-synchronization stability in this paper) was studied by employing a single-converter system connected to an infinite bus, which however, omits the impacts of power grid structure and the interactions among multiple converters. Motivated by this, we investigate how the grid structure affects PLL-synchronization stability of multi-converter systems. By using Kron reduction to eliminate the interior nodes, an equivalent reduced network is obtained which contains only the converter nodes. We explicitly show how the Kron-reduced multi-converter system can be decoupled into its modes. This modal representation allows us to demonstrate that the smallest eigenvalue of the grounded Laplacian matrix of the Kron-reduced network dominates the stability margin. We also carry out a sensitivity analysis of this smallest eigenvalue to explore how a perturbation in the original network affects the stability margin. On this basis, we provide guidelines on how to improve the PLL-synchronization stability of multi-converter systems by PLL-retuning, proper placement of converters or enhancing some weak connection in the network. Finally, we validate our findings with simulation results based on a 39-bus test system.

Short circuit ratio (SCR) is widely applied to analyze the strength of AC system and the small signal stability for single power elec-tronic based devices infeed systems (SPEISs). However, there still lacking the theory of short circuit ratio applicable for multi power electronic based devices infeed systems (MPEIS), as the complex coupling among multi power electronic devices (PEDs) leads to difficulties in stability analysis. In this regard, this paper firstly proposes a concept named generalized short circuit ratio (gSCR) to measure the strength of connected AC grid in a multi-infeed system from the small signal stability point of view. Generally, the gSCR is physically and mathematically extended from conven-tional SCR by decomposing the multi-infeed system into n inde-pendent single infeed systems. Then the operation gSCR (OgSCR) is proposed based on gSCR in order to take the variation of op-eration point into consideration. The participation factors and sensitivity are analyzed as well. The output impedance matrix of a grid-connected converter plays an important role in analyzing system stability. Due to the dynamics of the DC-link control and the phase locked loop (PLL), the output impedance matrices of the converter and grid are difficult to be diagonally decoupled simultaneously, neither in the dq domain nor in the phase domain. It weakens the effectiveness of impedance-based stability criterion (ISC) in system oscillation analysis. To this end, this paper innovatively proposes the generalized-impedance based stability criterion (GISC) to reduce the dimension of the transfer function matrix and simplify system small-signal stability analysis. Firstly, the impedances of the converter and the grid in polar coordinates are formulated, and the concept of generalized-impedance of the converter and the grid is put forward. Secondly, through strict mathematical derivation, the equation that implies the dynamic interaction between the converter and the grid is then extracted from the characteristic equation of the grid-connected converter system. Using the proposed method, the small-signal instability of system can be interpreted as the resonance of the generalized-impedances of the converter and the grid. Besides, the GISC is equivalent to ISC when the dynamics of the outer-loop control and PLL are not considered. The output impedance matrices of three-phase grid-connected voltage source converters (VSCs) are widely used in power system stability analysis. Regardless of how the impedance is modeled, there always exist coupling terms in the impedance matrix, which makes the system a multi-input- multi-output (MIMO) system. Some approximation approaches omit the coupling terms so that a three-phase system can be treated like a single-phase one, and the impedance-based stability criterion for a single-input-single-output (SISO) system is applicable. However, such handling may result in analytical errors or even incorrect conclusions in a mirror frequency coupled system. By introducing the concept of generalized- impedances, this letter proposes a new stability criterion based on a virtual SISO system, which can effectively handle the coupling terms. Further, the effects of the phase-locked-loop (PLL) parameters on system stability are studied based on the proposed criterion. The effectiveness of the proposed criterion is verified by a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation based on RT-LAB.

The relationship between the short circuit ratio (SCR) and static voltage stability is analyzed in this paper. According to eigenvalue decomposition method, a novel concept named generalized short circuit ratio (gSCR) has been proposed for multi-infeed LCC-HVDC (MIDC) systems to mathematically measure the connect-ed AC strength from the point view of voltage stability, which can overcome the rule-of-thumb basis of existing multi-infeed short circuit ratio (MISCR) concept. In gSCR, two indices, the critical gSCR (CgSCR) and the boundary gSCR (BgSCR) are developed to quantitatively evaluate if the connected AC system is strong or weak, in which CgSCR=2 and BgSCR=3 are two critical values for strength evaluation. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed gSCR concept.
