Abstract The lysosome-targeting chimera (LYTAC) strategy provided a very powerful tool for the degradation of membrane proteins. However, the synthesis of LYTACs, antibody-small molecule conjugates, is challenging. The ability of antibody-based LYTACs to penetrate solid tumor is limited as well, especially to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Here, we propose a covalent chimeric peptide-based targeted degradation platform (Pep-TACs) by introducing a long flexible aryl sulfonyl fluoride group, which allows proximity-enabled cross-linking upon binding with the protein of interest. The Pep-TACs platform facilitates the degradation of target proteins through the mechanism of recycling transferrin receptor (TFRC)-mediated lysosomal targeted endocytosis. Biological experiments demonstrate that covalent Pep-TACs can significantly degrade the expression of PD-L1 on tumor cells, dendritic cells and macrophages, especially under acidic conditions, and markedly enhance the function of T cells and tumor phagocytosis by macrophages. Furthermore, both in anti-PD-1-responsive and -resistant tumor models, the Pep-TACs exert significant anti-tumor immune response. It is noteworthy that Pep-TACs can cross the BBB and prolong the survival of mice with in situ brain tumor. As a proof-of-concept, this study introduces a modular TFRC-based covalent peptide degradation platform for the degradation of membrane protein, and especially for the immunotherapy of brain tumors.

Introduction: With the escalating menace of organic compounds in environmental pollution imperiling the survival of aquatic organisms, the investigation of organic compound toxicity across diverse aquatic species assumes paramount significance for environmental protection. Understanding how different species respond to these compounds helps assess the potential ecological impact of pollution on aquatic ecosystems as a whole. Compared with traditional experimental methods, deep learning methods have higher accuracy in predicting aquatic toxicity, faster data processing speed and better generalization ability. Objectives: This article presents ATFPGT-multi, an advanced multi-task deep neural network prediction model for organic toxicity. Methods: The model integrates molecular fingerprints and molecule graphs to characterize molecules, enabling the simultaneous prediction of acute toxicity for the same organic compound across four distinct fish species. Furthermore, to validate the advantages of multi-task learning, we independently construct prediction models, named ATFPGT-single, for each fish species. We employ cross-validation in our experiments to assess the performance and generalization ability of ATFPGT-multi. Results: The experimental results indicate, first, that ATFPGT-multi outperforms ATFPGT-single on four fish datasets with AUC improvements of 9.8%, 4%, 4.8%, and 8.2%, respectively, demonstrating the superiority of multi-task learning over single-task learning. Furthermore, in comparison with previous algorithms, ATFPGT-multi outperforms comparative methods, emphasizing that our approach exhibits higher accuracy and reliability in predicting aquatic toxicity. Moreover, ATFPGT-multi utilizes attention scores to identify molecular fragments associated with fish toxicity in organic molecules, as demonstrated by two organic molecule examples in the main text, demonstrating the interpretability of ATFPGT-multi. Conclusion: In summary, ATFPGT-multi provides important support and reference for the further development of aquatic toxicity assessment. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) plays a crucial role in regulating many physiological processes. Activating the AhR–CYP1A1 axis has emerged as a novel therapeutic strategy against various inflammatory diseases. Here, a practical in situ cell-based fluorometric assay was constructed to screen AhR-CYP1A1 axis modulators, via functional sensing of CYP1A1 activities in live cells. Firstly, a cell-permeable, isoform-specific enzyme-activable fluorogenic substrate for CYP1A1 was rationally constructed for in-situ visualizing the dynamic changes of CYP1A1 function in living systems, which was subsequently used for discovering the efficacious modulators of the AhR–CYP1A1 axis. Following screening of a compound library, LAC-7 was identified as an efficacious activator of the AhR–CYP1A1 axis, which dose-dependently up-regulated the expression levels of both CYP1A1 and AhR in multiple cell lines. LAC-7 also suppressed macrophage M1 polarization and reduced the levels of inflammatory factors in LPS-induced bone marrow-derived macrophages. Animal tests showed that LAC-7 could significantly mitigate DSS-induced ulcerative colitis and LPS-induced acute lung injury in mice, and markedly reduced the levels of multiple inflammatory factors. Collectively, an optimized fluorometric cell-based assay was devised for in situ functional imaging of CYP1A1 activities in living systems, which strongly facilitated the discovery of efficacious modulators of the AhR–CYP1A1 axis as novel anti-inflammatory agents.

Patterns and drivers of species–genetic diversity correlations (SGDCs) have been broadly examined across taxa and ecosystems and greatly deepen our understanding of how biodiversity is maintained. However, few studies have examined the role of canopy structural heterogeneity, which is a defining feature of forests, in shaping SGDCs. Here, we determine what factors contribute to α- and β-species–genetic diversity correlations (i.e., α- and β-SGDCs) in a Chinese subtropical forest. For this purpose, we used neutral molecular markers to assess genetic variation in almost all adult individuals of the dominant tree species, Lithocarpus xylocarpus, across plots in the Ailaoshan National Natural Reserve. We also quantified microhabitat variation by quantifying canopy structure heterogeneity with airborne laser scanning on 20 1-ha subtropical forest plots. We found that species α-diversity was negatively correlated with genetic α-diversity. Canopy structural heterogeneity was positively correlated with species α-diversity but negatively correlated with genetic α-diversity. These contrasting effects contributed to the formation of a negative α-SGDC. Further, we found that canopy structural heterogeneity increases species α-diversity and decreases genetic α-diversity by reducing the population size of target species. Species β-diversity, in contrast, was positively correlated with genetic β-diversity. Differences in canopy structural heterogeneity between plots had non-linear parallel effects on the two levels of β-diversity, while geographic distance had a relatively weak effect on β-SGDC. Our study indicates that canopy structural heterogeneity simultaneously affects plot-level community species diversity and population genetic diversity, and species and genetic turnover across plots, thus driving α- and β-SGDCs.

The binding affinity of aptamers to targets has a crucial role in the pharmaceutical and biosensing effects. Despite diverse post-systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (post-SELEX) modifications explored in aptamer optimization, accurate prediction of high-affinity modification strategies remains challenging. Sclerostin, which antagonizes the Wnt signaling pathway, negatively regulates bone formation. Our screened sclerostin aptamer was previously shown to exert bone anabolic potential. In the current study, an interactive methodology involving the exchange of mutual information between experimental endeavors and machine learning was initially proposed to design a high-affinity post-SELEX modification strategy for aptamers. After four rounds of interactive training (a total of 422 modified aptamer-target affinity datasets with diverse modification types and sites), an antifcial intelligence model with high predictive accuracy with a correlation coefficient of 0.82 between the predicted and actual binding affinities was obtained. Notably, the machine learning-powered modified aptamer selected from this work exhibited 105-fold higher affinity (picomole level K D value) and a 3.2-folds greater Wnt-signal re-activation effect compared to naturally unmodified aptamers. This approach harnessed the power of machine learning to predict the most promising high-affinity modification strategy for aptamers.

In the present study, four new species, Geastrum artocarpicola, G. fibulatum, G. sinense and G. trachelium collected from China, are proposed based on a combination of morphological characteristics and molecular evidence. Geastrum artocarpicola is characterized by shallowly saccate to deep saccate exoperidium, bubble-shaped to flask shaped basidia, spherical basidiospores. G. fibulatum is characterized by shallowly saccate to deep saccate exoperidium, spherical basidiospores, generative hyphae with clamp connections in the mycelium layer. G. sinense has arched exoperidium, long stipe expanded basidiomata, and spherical basidiospores. G. trachelium has deep saccate exoperidium, flask-shaped basidia, and spherical basidiospores. Sequences of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS), large subunit (nrLSU), the largest subunit of ribosomal polymerase II (RPB1), and subunit 6 of ATP synthase (ATP6) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) markers of the studied samples were generated, and the phylogenetic analyses were performed with maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference methods. The results showed that our collection clustered within Geastrum but distinctly from the others. Full morphological descriptions, illustrations, and phylogenetic analyses results for the four new species are provided. In addition, G. sanglinense is treated as a synonym of beijingense.

Abstract Background Potassium plays a crucial role in determining the quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves. Our prior investigations have demonstrated that using potassium-efficient rootstocks through grafting offers a viable solution to the prevalent issue of low potassium levels in Chinese flue-cured tobacco leaves. Nevertheless, the specific molecular mechanisms responsible for the increase in potassium content following grafting in tobacco leaves have yet to be elucidated. This study revealing for the first time how grafting improves potassium utilization efficiency through combined transcriptome and metabolome analysis. Results This study selected Wufeng NO. 2, a potassium-efficient variety, and Yunyan 87, a main cultivar, as the research subjects to investigate the underlying reasons for differential potassium utilization efficiency among different tobacco rootstocks through transcriptome and metabolic data analysis of grafted tobacco. The results showed a considerable increment of 90.1% in the potassium content of the grafted tobacco leaves. Overall, 2044 differentially expressed genes were identified through transcriptome analysis, with the majority being enriched in plant hormone signal transduction and the MAPK pathway. Metabolome analysis revealed 175 metabolites with significant differences, primarily involving primary metabolites such as amino acids and carbohydrates. Among these, there was an increase in the metabolites levels related to glycolysis, amino acid metabolism, and the TCA cycle pathway in grafted tobacco leaves. The key metabolites and genes in the above pathways were selected for Mantel-Pearson correlation analysis, leading to the identification of 2 genes and 3 metabolites, including IAA, CIP1, D-fructose, Fumaric acid and Oxoglutaric acid, that were significantly associated with the increased potassium content in grafted tobacco. Conclusions This study uncovers the intricate molecular mechanism behind grafting tobacco to enhance potassium utilization efficiency, thereby offering theoretical support for enhancing crop nutrient utilization efficiency through grafting technology.

Abstract Different angles and central axis length combinations of the reading man flap were studied to determine the optimal angles and central axis length combinations for reducing the stress on the flap tip. First, different models and corresponding finite element models of flaps with different angles and central axial lengths were established by ANSYS software. Then, skin flap transfer was achieved through forced displacement, and the stress distributions of the flap with different angles and central axial lengths under different materials were obtained. Finally, the stress distributions of the flaps of each case were compared and analysed. The results shows: (1) The optimal angle and central axis for reducing the stress of the flap tip are 60° for the quadrangular flap, 45° for the triangular flap, with a 2 fold increase in length of the central axial relative to the diameter of the circular defects. (2) The quadrangular flap tip tends to have a greater possibility of complications than does the triangular flap tip. (3) The stress of the triangular flap tip is more sensitive to the angle and central axis length. (4) The stress of the flap tip in elderly people is greater than that in young people with the same design and position, which leads to greater possibility of complications at the flap tip in elderly patients than in young patients.

Abstract Background and aims of the study Fluctuations in environmental temperature and humidity significantly affect human physiology and disease manifestation. In the Lingnan region of China, high summer temperatures and humidity often cause symptoms like diminished appetite, sticky tongue coating, sticky stool, unsatisfactory defecation, lethargy, and joint heaviness. These are referred to as “Dampness Syndrome” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Thick and greasy tongue fur and sticky feces are characteristic symptoms of “Dampness Syndrome” and serve as crucial diagnostic indicators in TCM for assessing health conditions. However, the specific mechanisms that lead to these symptoms, such as sticky feces and thick and greasy tongue fur, have not been fully elucidated. Understanding these external symptoms is essential, as they reflect internal health status. Warm, humid environments favor microorganism growth, potentially disrupting gut microbiota and bacterial translocation, which could induce an immune-inflammatory response. The primary objective of this study is to explore the potential significant role of immune response products in influencing the proliferation and biofilm formation of gut microbiota, which may subsequently lead to changes in fecal characteristics. Methods In this study, mice were exposed to a controlled warm and humid environment (25 ± 3 °C with 95% humidity) for 16 days to simulate conditions associated with “Dampness Syndrome.” After this period, Huoxiang Zhengqi Water, a traditional remedy, has been administrated for four days. On the one hand saliva and tongue coating samples were also taken from human subjects with “Dampness Syndrome” for microorganism culturing and to assess biofilm formation, on the other hand the co-culture products of a macrophage cell line RAW264.7 and Candida albicans and the effect of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were evaluated for their impact on the proliferation and biofilm-forming abilities of different bacterial strains. Results Compared to a control group, the treatment group exhibited significant changes in gut microbiota, including increased biofilm formation, which was mitigated by Huoxiang Zhengqi Water. In the model group, fungal translocation was observed, potentially triggering an inflammatory response. Intraperitoneal injections of various bacterial strains in mice reproduced the sticky stool characteristics. Both mice and human subjects with “Dampness Syndrome” displayed elevated serum levels of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and interleukin-17 A (IL-17A). Interestingly, Saliva samples from individuals with “Dampness Syndrome” showed elevated TNF-α levels, accompanied by thick and greasy tongue fur. Culturing samples from the tongue coating of individuals in the “Dampness Syndrome” group revealed an increased biofilm formation capability. C. albicans co-cultured with RAW264.7 cells increased TNF-α secretion, and the supernatant promoted pathogenic bacterial proliferation and biofilm formation. TNF-α specifically enhanced biofilm formation in microorganism like C. albicans and Staphylococcus aureus, with minimal effect on beneficial bacteria like Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum in the tested conditions. Conclusions These findings provided new insights into the biological mechanisms of ‘Dampness Syndrome’ and support the therapeutic role of Huoxiang Zhengqi Water in treating symptoms associated with microbial dysbiosis and inflammation. Additionally, they indicate that TNF-α seems to have selective effects in promoting the proliferation and biofilm formation of different microbial species.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate changes in the blood metabolic profiles of newborns with varying intrauterine growth conditions. Specifically, we analyzed the levels of amino acids, carnitine, and succinylacetone among full-term newborns, including small for gestational age (SGA), appropriate for gestational age (AGA), and large for gestational age (LGA). We aim to identify differential metabolites and metabolic pathways that may offer insights into clinical interventions. Methods: A total of 5106 full-term newborns were included in the study. Blood samples were obtained from all newborns between 3 and 5 days after birth and analyzed using tandem mass spectrometry to detect blood metabolites. Subsequently, we screened for different metabolites and metabolic pathways among the groups using the MetaboAnalystR package (Version 1.0.1) in R software (R-3.6.0). Results: The levels of blood amino acids and carnitine metabolism differed significantly among newborns with varying intrauterine growth conditions. Full-term SGA newborns exhibited a decrease in multiple amino acids and an increase in multiple carnitines, while full-term LGA newborns showed an increase in multiple amino acids and acylcarnitines. Conclusion: Continuous monitoring of the short-term and long-term growth and metabolic status of full-term SGA and LGA newborns is warranted with individualized dietary and nutritional adjustments to promote healthy growth in a timely manner. The findings of this research contribute to the broader understanding of SGA/LGA and shall inform future research on metabolomics, interventions, and long-term outcomes.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the correlation and predictive value of TyG and related parameters with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) MAFLD. This study retrospectively included individuals who underwent health examinations and abdominal ultrasound from July 2021 to June 2024 at the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, Sichuan Province, China. A total of 71,299 subjects’ clinical and laboratory data were extracted, the correlation between TyG and related parameters and MAFLD was analyzed via univariate and multivariate logistic regression methods, and the nonlinear relationship between the TyG index and the risk of MAFLD was explored via restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis. The predictive value of TyG and related parameters for MAFLD was assessed using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under the ROC curve (AUC). TyG and related parameters were positively correlated with MAFLD, and the results remained unchanged after adjustment for the corresponding parameters. RCS analysis revealed a significant dose‒response relationship between TyG and related parameters and MAFLD. ROC curve analysis revealed AUC values of 0.83 (0.82–0.83), 0.92 (0.91–0.92), 0.90 (0.90–0.91), and 0.87 (0.87–0.88) for TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, and TyG-WHR, respectively. Abstract Backgrounds Osteoarthritis (OA) significantly impacts the elderly, leading to disability and decreased quality of life. While hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitin sulfate (CS) are recognized for their therapeutic potential in OA, their effects on extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation are not well understood. This study investigates the impact of HA and CS, individually and combined, on ECM degradation in OA and the underlying mechanisms. Methods OA was modeled in rats through anterior cruciate ligament transection and in cells using IL-1β pretreatment. Treatments included HA and CS, alone or combined, with and without PMA (an NF-κB pathway activator). Cartilage tissue was analyzed using HE and Saffron O-fast green staining, with degradation assessed via the OARSI score. Inflammatory factors were measured by ELISA, and ECM-related proteins were detected by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and Western blotting. Chondrocyte viability was assessed using CCK8. Results HA and CS treatments significantly reduced cartilage damage, decreased inflammatory factor release, alleviated ECM degradation, and inhibited NF-κB pathway activation compared to the OA group (P

Abstract Multiple potential interactions occur in a coal-mining equipment system during operation, which is crucial for understanding and predicting the dynamic system evolution. Existing methods for building interaction relations in coal-mining equipment systems face problems including incomplete selection of system nodes and difficulty in defining interaction-relation types and distinguishing interaction-relation weights. This study proposes an interaction-relation inference method EMIFC-CIRI for coal-mining equipment systems. EMIFC-CIRI first builds a monitoring index system for coal-mining equipment based on evidence and then accurately selects system nodes. The interaction constructor of the CIRI interaction inference model in this method introduces Gumbel-softmax technology, which autonomously generates multiple types of interaction relations based on several probability matrices. CIRI’s interaction optimizer introduces an attention mechanism to assign weights to interaction relations, and it predicts future system states based on device-monitoring data and interaction relations, optimizing the types and weights of interaction relations between nodes by reducing prediction errors. The study included experiments on relevant datasets. The results show that EMIFC-CIRI successfully built various interaction relations of different strengths, with a 156.17% improvement in interaction-relation quality and a 68.17% improvement in dynamic modeling performance compared with state-of-the-art comparison methods. This study provides a new perspective for research in the field of interaction reasoning of coal-mining equipment systems.

Objective: This is a case report of a COL4A1 gene mutation which was confirmed by further genetic testing following anomalies observed in prenatal ultrasound and fetal brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Case reports: The ultrasound examination of the patient revealed a mass in fetal left intracranial cavity. Repeated subsequent MRI detected an evolving mass in the left frontal parietal lobe. All tests such as karyotyping, chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), and PCR-cytomegalovirus detection of amniotic fluid, returned negative results. However, the whole exome sequencing (WES) identified a heterozygous missense mutation that was considered pathogenic in the COL4A1 (NM_001844.6) gene: c.3715G > A (p.Gly1239Arg). Consequently, the couple chose to terminate the pregnancy and refused the pathological examination of the fetus. Conclusion: This case underscores the importance of image-assisted examinations such as prenatal ultrasound and MRI, and that WES is a critical tool to establish the genetic etiology.

Abstract Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) is an important crop used for edible food and medicinal usage. Drought annually brings reduction in crop yield and quality, causing enormous economic losses. Transcription factors are often involved in the regulation of plant responses to environmental stresses. In this study, we identified 233 MYB transcription factors in tartary buckwheat and classified them into 13 groups, including 1R, R2R3, 3R, 4R types. Gene structure and conserved motifs of these 233 FtMYBs suggested the relative conservation of these FtMYBs within each group. There is strong collinearity within the genomes of F. tataricum, with identifying syntenic gene pairs of FtMYB. Further, the expansion of FtMYB genes was attributed to whole genome duplication. The enrichment analysis of cis-acting elements in the FtMYB genes indicated that FtMYBs may participate in abiotic stress responses. The transcriptional changes of FtMYB genes in tartary buckwheat were then investigated using public data and qPCR. A number of FtMYB genes exhibited apparent transcript levels in the detected tissues and most of them disturbed their expression after the treatment of PEG6000 or natural treatment of tartary buckwheat seedlings. Some of the FtMYB genes showed a similar expression trend with qPCR validation. FtMYB gene FtPinG0005108900.01 were shown to activated by PEG6000 and natural drought treatment, and its encoded protein localizes to nucleus, revealing it as a typical transcription factor. Overexpression of FtPinG0005108900.01 increase the drought tolerance, and transcriptome analysis indicated that lignin synthesis other than flavonoid biosynthesis pathway was activated in the overexpressing plants following drought treatment. Our results provided detailed evolution and comparative genomic information of FtMYBs in tartary buckwheat and dissected the function of a FtMYB gene FtPinG0005108900.01 in response to drought.

Abstract Background Early diagnosis of cleft lip and palate (CLP) requires a multiplane examination, demanding high technical proficiency from radiologists. Therefore, this study aims to develop and validate the first artificial intelligence (AI)-based model (CLP-Net) for fully automated multi-plane localization in three-dimensional(3D) ultrasound during the first trimester. Methods This retrospective study included 418 (394 normal, 24 CLP) 3D ultrasound from 288 pregnant woman between July 2022 to October 2024 from Shenzhen Guangming District People’s Hospital during the 11–13+ 6 weeks of pregnancy. 320 normal volumes were used for training and validation, while 74 normal and 24 CLP volumes were used for testing. Two experienced radiologists reviewed three standard lip and palate planes (mid sagittal, retronasal triangle, and maxillary axial planes) as ground truth (GT) and the CLP-Net was developed to locate these planes. Results In normal test set, mean angle(± SD)° and distance(± SD)mm differences were 6.24 ± 4.83, 9.81 ± 5.48, 15.36 ± 18.14 and 0.86 ± 0.72, 1.36 ± 1.15, 1.96 ± 2.35 for MSP ± SD, RTP ± SD and MAP ± SD, NCC and SSIM were 0.931 ± 0.079, 0.819 ± 0.122, 0.781 ± 0.157 and 0.896 ± 0.058, 0.785 ± 0.076, 0.726 ± 0.088 respectively. In the CLP cases, there were 8.61 ± 5.52, 10.67 ± 5.08, 16.91 ± 17.42 and 1.03 ± 1.20, 1.17 ± 1.08, 1.34 ± 0.95 for mean angle and distance in MSP, RTP, and MAP, respectively. NCC and SSIM were 0.876 ± 0.104, 0.803 ± 0.084, 0.793 ± 0.089 and 0.841 ± 0.105, 0.812 ± 0.085, 0.764 ± 0.100, respectively. CLP-Net predictions had a highly visual acceptance rate among radiologists (MSP: 95%, RTP: 70%, MAP: 70%), with improved localization speed 15s(31.3%) for senior radiologists and 63s(38.9%) for junior radiologists. Conclusions CLP-Net accurately locates three planes for CLP screening, aiding radiologists and enhancing the efficiency of ultrasound examinations.

Abstract Objectives Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly among the elderly, resulting in high rates of intensive care unit (ICU) admissions. Malnutrition is common in elderly patients and has been associated with poor prognosis in patients with COPD. However, its impact in the ICU setting remains incompletely defined. The objective of this study is to examine the association between malnutrition, as measured by the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), and adverse outcomes in older patients with COPD in the ICU. Methods A cohort study of 2,824 older COPD patients admitted to the ICU from 2008 to 2019 was conducted. The association between GNRI scores and outcomes including in-hospital mortality, risk of pressure injuries, and length of ICU stay was evaluated. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. A causal mediation analysis was employed to identify potential mediating variables and to calculate the proportion mediated. Results The median age of study participants was approximately 75 years, with 1,281 (45.4%) being female. Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to report the clinical and psychological outcomes of using a locking compression plate (LCP) as a sequential external fixator following the distraction phase in the treatment of tibial bone defects caused by fracture-related infection (FRI). Abstract Intelligent battlefield environment recognition is crucial for active camouflage technology. Enhancing detection capabilities for various environments is essential for target survival. Traditional systems, relying on single visible light or infrared bands, face challenges like low detection performance and limited information use due to lighting conditions, making them inadequate for all-weather detection. This study presents a multi-modal feature fusion network model using a typical background database. It employs a coordinated attention mechanism for spatial information and optimizes dense and dual-path networks to improve the fusion of optical and infrared images. The model achieves 97.57% accuracy, 4.16% higher than the best single-modal results. The attention mechanism boosts accuracy by 2.68%. Thus, the model effectively integrates optical and infrared data, showing strong performance in classifying and detecting typical battlefield backgrounds.

Lung cancer is the main cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Due to lack of obvious clinical symptoms in the early stage of the lung cancer, it is hard to distinguish between malignancy and pulmonary nodules. Understanding the immune responses in the early stage of malignant lung cancer patients may provide new insights for diagnosis. Here, using high-through-put sequencing, we obtained the TCRβ repertoires in the peripheral blood of 100 patients with Stage I lung cancer and 99 patients with benign pulmonary nodules. Our analysis revealed that the usage frequencies of TRBV, TRBJ genes, and V-J pairs and TCR diversities indicated by D50s, Shannon indexes, Simpson indexes, and the frequencies of the largest TCR clone in the malignant samples were significantly different from those in the benign samples. Furthermore, reduced TCR diversities were correlated with the size of pulmonary nodules. Moreover, we built a backpropagation neural network model with no clinical information to identify lung cancer cases from patients with pulmonary nodules using 15 characteristic TCR clones. The vast neuronal diversity in the human neocortex is vital for high-order brain functions, necessitating elucidation of the regulatory mechanisms underlying such unparalleled diversity. However, recent studies have yet to comprehensively reveal the diversity of neurons and the molecular logic of neocortical origin in humans at single-cell resolution through profiling transcriptomic or epigenomic landscapes, owing to the application of unimodal data alone to depict exceedingly heterogeneous populations of neurons. In this study, we generated a comprehensive compendium of the developing human neocortex by simultaneously profiling gene expression and open chromatin from the same cell. We computationally reconstructed the differentiation trajectories of excitatory projection neurons of cortical origin and inferred the regulatory logic governing lineage bifurcation decisions for neuronal diversification. We demonstrated that neuronal diversity arises from progenitor cell lineage specificity and postmitotic differentiation at distinct stages. Our data paves the way for understanding the primarily coordinated regulatory logic for neuronal diversification in the neocortex.

Ceramic fiber rigid insulation tiles (CFRITs) provide a feasible solution for thermal protection of aerospace vehicles in extreme environments. However, traditional CFRITs’ high forming temperature and non-ablative property limit their applications. The study first introduces a novel thermo-responsive self-ceramifiable glass fiber rigid insulation tile (GFRIT) characterized by low forming temperature (150 °C), low density (0.435 g/cm3), high compressive strength (1.58 MPa), and low thermal conductivity (0.0553 W/(m·K)) in normal circumstances. Interestingly, it can spontaneously transform into high-strength semi-crystalline ceramics at elevated temperatures. The self-ceramization mechanism of GFRIT is elaborated in considerable detail. The 20 mm thick sample shows low backside temperature only 216 °C, solid overall structure, and near-zero ablation after continuous burning at 1300 °C for 600 s. The detailed illustration of gradient inter-coupling effects among various thermal protection mechanisms is provided. The self-ceramifiable GFRIT offers a significant idea for developing thermal protection materials (TPMs) with processability, toughness, high load-carrying capacity and efficient insulation in extreme conditions.

Multiple stressors are believed to deteriorate production performance and cause substantial economic losses in commercial poultry farming. Folic acid (FA) is an antioxidant compound that can improve oocyte function and regulate gut microbiota composition. The current study was conducted to investigate the role of FA in alleviating stress and improving production performance. Sixty Hyline Brown laying hens at 21 weeks of age were randomly divided into three groups, with 10 replicates in each group and each replicate containing two chickens. Each group received basic diet and saline injection (Con group), basic diet with dexamethasone (DXM) injection (DXM group), or basic diet supplemented with FA (13 mg/kg in the premix) with DXM injection (FA group). The feeding trial lasted five weeks. Birds in the DXM and FA groups receiving subcutaneous DXM injections at a dosage of 4.50 mg/kg per day during the first seven days of the trial. Tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) signaling plays a pivotal role in dendritic growth and dendritic spine formation to promote learning and memory. The activity-dependent release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor at synapses binds to pre- or postsynaptic TrkB resulting in the strengthening of synapses, reflected by long-term potentiation. Postsynaptically, the association of postsynaptic density protein-95 with TrkB enhances phospholipase Cγ-Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-mechanistic target of rapamycin signaling required for long-term potentiation. In this review, we discuss TrkB-postsynaptic density protein-95 coupling as a promising strategy to magnify brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling towards the development of novel therapeutics for specific neurological disorders. A reduction of TrkB signaling has been observed in neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s disease, and enhancement of postsynaptic density protein-95 association with TrkB signaling could mitigate the observed deficiency of neuronal connectivity in schizophrenia and depression. Treatment with brain-derived neurotrophic factor is problematic, due to poor pharmacokinetics, low brain penetration, and side effects resulting from activation of the p75 neurotrophin receptor or the truncated TrkB.T1 isoform. Although TrkB agonists and antibodies that activate TrkB are being intensively investigated, they cannot distinguish the multiple human TrkB splicing isoforms or cell type-specific functions. Targeting TrkB–postsynaptic density protein-95 coupling provides an alternative approach to specifically boost TrkB signaling at localized synaptic sites versus global stimulation that risks many adverse side effects.

Abstract Introduction This study aims to investigate the incidence and risk factors of visual impairment and eye diseases in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD), a rare cerebrovascular disorder. Understanding these associations is crucial for improving patient management and outcomes. Methods This study utilized International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes from both the 9th edition (ICD-9-CM) and 10th edition (ICD-10-CM) to define diagnoses, complications, and procedures within the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Database. Data elements were extracted from discharge summaries. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics software version 25. Chi-square tests were employed for univariate analysis to assess the relationships between visual impairment, eye diseases, and MMD. Subsequently, multivariate logistic regression was utilized to calculate odds ratios (OR) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) over a 10-year period to further investigate these relationships. Results The incidence of visual impairment and eye diseases in MMD was 3.7%. Visual impairment and eye diseases in MMD were associated with Asian or Pacific Islander race (OR = 1.538, 95% CI 1.058–2.237), self-pay insurance (OR = 1.796, 95% CI 1.503–3.061), and hospitalization in the Midwest or North Central region (OR = 1.466, 95% CI 1.035–2.076). Visual impairment and eye diseases in moyamoya disease were associated with ischemic stroke (OR = 2.001, 95% CI 1.564–2.560), hypertension (OR = 1.508, 95% CI 1.089–2.088), headache (OR = 2.834, 95% CI 1.968–4.081), migraine (OR = 2.156, 95% CI 1.544–3.011), memory loss (OR = 3.866, 95% CI 1.493–10.012), and dizziness (OR = 1.322, 95% CI 0.549–3.182). Conclusions Our analysis of a large, population-based sample in the US reveals a notable association between MMD and the presence of visual impairment and eye diseases.

Vertebral landmark localization is a crucial step in various spine-related clinical applications, which requires detecting the corner points of 17 vertebrae. However, the neighboring landmarks often disturb each other because of the homogeneous appearance of vertebrae, making vertebral landmark localization extremely difficult. In this paper, we propose a multi-stage cascaded convolutional neural network (CNN) to split a single task into two sequential steps: center point localization to roughly locate 17 center points of vertebrae, and corner point localization to determine four corner points for each vertebra without any disturbance. The landmarks in each step were located gradually from a set of initialized points by regressing offsets using cascaded CNNs. To resist the mutual attraction of the vertebrae, principal component analysis was employed to preserve the shape constraint in offset regression. We evaluated our method on the AASCE dataset, comprising 609 tight spinal anteroposterior X-ray images, and each image contained 17 vertebrae composed of the thoracic and lumbar spine for spinal shape characterization. The experimental results demonstrated the superior performance of vertebral landmark localization over other state-of-the-art methods, with the relative error decreasing from 3.2e−3 to 7.2e−4.

Abstract The Loess Plateau is a region of importance in geomorphologic research because of its typical loess layers and intense surface erosion. Analysing the landforms on the Loess Plateau is helpful for understanding changes in the surface environment. However, geomorphologic data with high resolution are lacking for the Loess Plateau, which limits the progress of geomorphologic studies at finer scales. This study provides the first 30 m resolution landform classification and characteristics dataset for the Loess Plateau (LPL30). Considering morphological characteristics, dominant dynamics, and material conditions, the landforms on the Loess Plateau were categorized into three levels with 28 landform types. Moreover, we calculated 6 metrics to quantify the spatial distribution and category composition of the landforms in 16 analytical units with different scales and shapes, resulting in 96 geomorphologic descriptors. This dataset provides fundamental data for the study of landform formation processes and evolution mechanisms at various scales and can be employed as a geomorphological gradient to support ecology and environmental research.

Abstract The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and robot technology has spurred the proposal and innovation of a coal gangue sorting robot system (CGSRS) paradigm. The time-varying raw coal flow (TVRCF) with multi-scene and full working conditions affects the gangue queue. Configuring the CGSRS scheme correctly is combative. The field environment puts forward higher requirements for the time complexity of the CGSRS multi-task allocation strategy. Therefore, this paper proposes a scheme evaluation method of the CGSRS with time-varying multi-scenario based on deep learning. Firstly, the gangue queue data set of multi-scene and full-condition TVRCF was obtained according to the belt speed, the maximum coal flow, and the uncorrelated nonlinear changes of coal flow and gangue content. The CGSRS scheme is established based on robot number and rule combination, and the multi-task allocation strategy is adjusted to generate the labels of the gangue queue. Then, the RGB sample set is established based on the labels of the gangue queue. The CGSRS scheme evaluation model is trained based on DenseNet. Finally, the CGSRS scheme evaluation method was designed to realize the prediction of a random gangue queue. In this paper, the CGSRS scheme evaluation model, the stability of the solution, and the comparison of methods are carried out. Experimental results show that the solution of the CGSRS scheme evaluation model is accurate and stable. The time complexity is significantly reduced and very stable. The CGSRS scheme evaluation method is applied to the CGSRS multi-task allocation problem, and the stability of the solution is not affected by the data. It is significantly better than the multi-task allocation strategy. The proposed method is the first attempt to apply deep learning to a multi-task allocation problem in CGSRS.

Abstract The injection molding procedure and the compression molding procedure of foamed polypropylene composite are studied. The pore diameter, pore density, and microscopic topography for polypropylene composites was studied by experiments of slicing samples. The foamed temperature is very important for foamed property of the foamed polypropylene composite materials. To analyze the effect of temperature distribution, the virtual boundary meshfree Galerkin method (VBMGM) was employed the radial basis function interpolation method to obtain a detailed discretization formula. The temperature of experiment and numerical calculation from zone a to zone d in different zones of the injection molding procedure is reduced from 406.35 K to 311.63 K; the temperature from Ma zone to Md zone in the compression molding procedure is reduced from 326.35 K to 309.14 K. The experimental observation of the injection molding procedure shows that the foamed property in zone c is ideal, and the average pore diameter and pore density are 26.5 µm and 2.43×109 cells·cm−3 respectively. According to the experimental observation of compression molding process, the foamed property in Md zone is ideal, and the average pore diameter and pore density are 131.2 µm and 6.3×104 cells·cm−3. These results are of great significance to the foam molding of polypropylene composites.

Abstract Background The ability to teach, as a core competency, has always suffered from a lack of systematic cultivation. Objective This study aimed to explore the difference in teaching quality before and after the application of the UTOP (UTeach observation protocol)-based multiple source feedback (MSF) formative assessment of the quality improvement of medical education classrooms. Methods This study retrospectively analyzed the teaching quality of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Third Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. The participants were divided into control and UTOP groups according to the actual training they took in the teaching. All the participants, including teachers and trainee teachers, who were under conventional teaching methods were in the control group, and those who were under MSF training were in the UTOP group. UTOP and New Teacher Assessment Scores (NTAS) were evaluated, and the differences between the two courses were analyzed. The UTOP group was divided into a teacher group and a practice group according to differences in the participants’ teaching experience. The UTOP-MSF evaluation data were extracted and analyzed, and the differences in teaching quality were compared before and after the implementation of MSF training. Results The study was conducted for 10 months, with 43 participants completing 120 web-based lectures. In the control group, 32 participants were included, including 22 teachers with 27 courses and 10 trainee teachers who had no teaching experience with 13 courses. Eleven participants in the UTOP group received 9 rounds of MSF feedback training and completed 80 online lectures, including 3 teachers with 19 courses and 8 trainee teachers with 61 courses. A total of 324 evaluations from researchers were extracted and analyzed, including 162 UTOP scores and 162 NTAS; 575 MSF assessments were analyzed, including 438 from the teachers and 137 from the trainee teachers. The participants in the UTOP group had significantly higher UTOP and NTAS scores than did those in the control group did (59.84 ± 14.64 vs. 40.74 ± 6.80, p = 0.000; 73.00 (62.25, 80.00) vs. 53.00 (50.75, 57.00), p = 0.000, respectively). Among the participants who performed UTOP training, the UTOP-MSF scores increased for both teachers and trainee teachers (51.50 (37.75, 68.25) vs. 73.00 (68.00, 76.50), p = 0.022; 41.00 (36.00, 51.75) vs. 68.00 (59.75, 77.00), p = 0.000, respectively). The mean UTOP MSF scores were strongly positively correlated with the mean NTAS (r = 0.640, p = 0.000). Conclusion UTOP-based MSF training significantly improved teaching quality in medical education, and it can be an effective tool for evaluating teaching quality.

Abstract Background Muscle atrophy caused by denervation is common in neuromuscular diseases, leading to loss of muscle mass and function. However, a comprehensive understanding of the overall molecular network changes during muscle denervation atrophy is still deficient, hindering the development of effective treatments. Method In this study, a sciatic nerve transection model was employed in male C57BL/6 J mice to induce muscle denervation atrophy. Gastrocnemius muscles were harvested at 3 days, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks post-denervation for transcriptomic and proteomic analysis. An integrative multi-omics approach was utilized to identify key genes essential for disease progression. Targeted proteomics using PRM was then employed to validate the differential expression of central genes. Combine single-nucleus sequencing results to observe the expression levels of PRM-validated genes in different cell types within muscle tissue.Through upstream regulatory analysis, NRF2 was identified as a potential therapeutic target. The therapeutic potential of the NRF2-targeting drug Omaveloxolone was evaluated in the mouse model. Result This research examined the temporal alterations in transcripts and proteins during muscle atrophy subsequent to denervation. A comprehensive analysis identified 54,534 transcripts and 3,218 proteins, of which 23,282 transcripts and 1,852 proteins exhibited statistically significant changes at 3 days, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks post-denervation. Utilizing multi-omics approaches, 30 hubgenes were selected, and PRM validation confirmed significant expression variances in 23 genes. The findings highlighted the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and metabolic disturbances in the pathogenesis of muscle atrophy, with a pronounced impact on type II muscle fibers, particularly type IIb fibers. The potential therapeutic benefits of Omaveloxolone in mitigating oxidative stress and preserving mitochondrial morphology were confirmed, thereby presenting novel strategies for addressing muscle atrophy induced by denervation. GSEA analysis results show that Autophagy, glutathione metabolism, and PPAR signaling pathways are significantly upregulated, while inflammation-related and neurodegenerative disease-related pathways are significantly inhibited in the Omaveloxolone group.GSR expression and the GSH/GSSG ratio were significantly higher in the Omaveloxolone group compared to the control group, while MuSK expression was significantly lower than in the control group. Conclusion In our study, we revealed the crucial role of oxidative stress, glucose metabolism, and mitochondrial dysfunction in denervation-induced muscle atrophy, identifying NRF2 as a potential therapeutic target. Omaveloxolone was shown to stabilize mitochondrial function, enhance antioxidant capacity, and protect neuromuscular junctions, thereby offering promising therapeutic potential for treating denervation-induced muscle atrophy. Abstract Assessing street walkability is a critical agenda in urban planning and multidisciplinary research, as it facilitates public health, community cohesion, and urban sustainability. Existing evaluation systems primarily focus on objective measurements, often neglecting subjective assessments and the diverse walking needs influenced by different urban spatial elements. This study addresses these gaps by constructing a comprehensive evaluation framework that integrates both subjective and objective dimensions, combining three neighbourhood indicators: Macro-Scale Index, Micro-Scale Index, and Street Walking Preferences Index. A normalization weighting method synthesizes these indicators into a comprehensive index. We applied this framework to assess the street environment within Beijing’s Fifth Ring Road. The empirical results demonstrate that: (1) The framework reliably reflects the distribution of walkability. (2) The three indicators show both similarities and differences, underscoring the need to consider the distinct roles of community and street-level elements and the interaction between subjective and objective dimensions. (3) In high-density cities with ring-road development patterns, the Macro-Scale Index closely aligns with the Comprehensive Index, demonstrating its accuracy in reflecting walkability. The proposed framework and findings offer new insights for street walkability research and theoretical support for developing more inclusive, sustainable and walkable cities.

Abstract While the ruminant gut archaeome regulates the gut microbiota and hydrogen balance, it is also a major producer of the greenhouse gas methane. However, ruminant gut archaeome diversity within the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of ruminant animals worldwide remains largely underexplored. Here, we construct a catalogue of 998 unique archaeal genomes recovered from the GITs of ruminants, utilizing 2270 metagenomic samples across 10 different ruminant species. Most of the archaeal genomes (669/998 = 67.03%) belong to Methanobacteriaceae and Methanomethylophilaceae (198/998 = 19.84%). Abstract Background The management of docking site healing in bone transport remains a significant challenge in orthopedic surgery. Traditional assessment methods rely heavily on qualitative radiographic evaluations. This study investigates the utility of pixel value ratio (PVR), an objective quantitative measure, in assessing bone healing at the docking site during bone transport. Methods This retrospective study included 47 patients who underwent bone transport for lower limb reconstruction between January 2015 and January 2020. Patients were categorized into bone union (n = 35) and nonunion (n = 12) groups based on docking site outcomes. PVR was calculated using two methods (PVR1 and PVR2) at six time points over 24 months post-docking. Subgroup analyses were performed based on gender, age, and surgical site. Abstract Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is the causative agent of infectious bronchitis (IB), a severe disease that primarily affects young chickens and poses a significant challenge to the global poultry industry. Understanding the complex interaction between the virus and its host is vital for developing innovative antiviral strategies. Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) plays a crucial role in regulating host antiviral immune responses. Our previous studies have shown that IBV infection disrupts the stability of lncRNA in host cells, indicating a potential regulatory role for lncRNA in IBV pathogenesis. It is still not clear how lncRNA precisely modulates IBV replication. In this study, we observed down-regulation ofMSTRG.26120.58 (named lncRNA-DRNR) expression in various chicken cell lines upon IBV infection. We demonstrated that silencing lncRNA-DRNR using siRNA enhances intracellular replication of IBV. Through exploring genes encoding proteins upstream and downstream of lncRNA-DRNR within a 100 kb range, we identified chJMJD6 (chicken JMJD6) as a potential target gene negatively regulated by lncRNA-DRNR expression levels. Furthermore, chJMJD6 inhibits STAT1 methylation, thereby affecting the induction of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) through the activation of the IFN-β-mediated JAK-STAT signalling pathway, ultimately promoting the intracellular replication of IBV. In summary, our findings reveal the critical role played by lncRNA-DRNR during IBV infection, providing novel insights into mechanisms underlying coronavirus-induced disruption in lncRNA stability.

Abstract As a newly defined type of programmed cell death, ferroptosis is considered a potent weapon against tumors due to its distinct mechanism from other types of programmed cell death. Ferroptosis is triggered by the uncontrolled accumulation of hydroperoxyl polyunsaturated fatty acid-containing phospholipids, also called lipid peroxidation. The lipid peroxidation, generated through enzymatic and non-enzymatic mechanisms, drives changes in cell morphology and the destruction of membrane integrity. Here, we dissect the mechanisms of ferroptosis induced enzymatically or non-enzymatically, summarize the major metabolism pathways in modulating lipid peroxidation, and provide insights into the relationship between ferroptosis and tumor suppression. In this review, we discuss the recent advances of ferroptosis in tumor microenvironments and the prospect of potential therapeutic application.

Abstract The quality of broiler meat affects consumers’ purchasing decisions. Numerous studies have shown that phosphorylation of proteins in muscle can affect muscle quality. Here, metabolomics and transcriptomics were used to systematically identify the genetic regulation of differences in meat flavor among different broiler. By constructing the meat flavor-related metabolite-gene networks, we identified that protein phosphatase magnesium/manganese-dependent 1J (PPM1J), which is known to regulate a range of biological processes by modulating reversible protein phosphorylation, was a differentially expressed gene with the highest connectivity to meat flavor-related metabolites. Gain- and loss-of-function analysis revealed that PPM1J induced muscular atrophy, improved meat quality and regulated the composition of glycerophospholipids. More importantly, phosphoproteome and metabolome results found that PPM1J participates in the regulation of meat quality feature and glycerophospholipids composition by catalyzing protein dephosphorylation. Our study provides a basis for further understanding the molecular mechanism of meat quality feature and glycerophospholipids composition in broiler.

Abstract The interaction between diet and the immune system has garnered considerable attention, especially regarding the immunomodulatory effects of food‐derived peptides. These peptides, derived from dietary proteins, exhibit diverse mechanisms of action, influencing cytokine production, immune cell function, and gut barrier integrity. Although there are numerous in vitro and animal studies supporting its therapeutic potential in immune‐related diseases, clinical relevance requires further investigation. This review synthesizes current knowledge on food‐derived peptides as immunomodulators, highlighting clinical insights and discussing challenges in their application. Additionally, it expands beyond peptides to encompass various dietary compounds influencing immune function. By integrating structural and functional diversity, this review provides a comprehensive understanding of how nutrition shapes immune responses, offering insights for personalized health strategies.

Super-resolution (SR) of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is gaining increasing attention for being able to provide detailed anatomical information. However, current SR methods often use the complex convolutional network for feature extraction, which is difficult to train and not suitable for limited computation resources in the medical scenario. To tackle these bottlenecks, we propose a multi-distillation residual network (MDRN) for more differential feature refinement, which has a superior trade-off between reconstruction accuracy and computation cost. Specifically, a novel feature multi-distillation residual block with a contrast-aware channel attention module was designed to make the residual features more focused on low-vision information, which maximizes the power of MDRN. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our MDRN over state-of-the-art methods in reconstruction quality and efficiency. Our method outperforms other existing methods in peak signal-noise ratio by up to 0.44–1.82 dB in 4× scale when GPU memory and runtime are lower than in other SR methods. Abstract During the flood season, high dam discharge rates result in total dissolved gas (TDG) supersaturation. This condition causes gas bubble trauma and can lead to fish mortality, which poses a significant threat to downstream river ecosystems. Assessing the ecological risks of TDG supersaturation is a challenge in waterpower-intensive river basins worldwide. Few studies have explored the impact of TDG supersaturation on fish behaviours, such as aggression and memory, which are crucial for feeding, reproduction, and predator avoidance. In this study, behavioural tests were conducted in a T-maze to investigate the effects of acute TDG supersaturation on swimming behaviour, aggression, and memory in medaka (Oryzias latipes). The results demonstrated that medaka exposed to TDG levels of 115% and 130% for 2 h had significantly reduced swimming performance.At TDG levels of 100%, 115% and 130%, medaka activity rates in the mirror arm of the maze in the mirror test were 44.34 ± 12.88%, 40.27 ± 15.44% and 35.35 ± 16.07%, respectively. Similarly, the activity rates of medaka in the active stimulus arm of the maze in the memory test were 50.35 ± 14.75%, 40.76 ± 12.51% and 35.35 ± 18.47%, respectively. The behaviour of medaka changed with increasing TDG supersaturation. These findings contribute to the development of an ecological risk assessment model for TDG supersaturation based on memory and aggression in fish and provide data for developing management strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of TDG supersaturation.

Abstract The study investigates the global impact of land property rights on land use efficiency (LUE), as measured by the key indicator for United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11.3.1, namely Land Consumption Rate to Population Growth Rate. By utilizing human-land change data from 165 countries spanning the period between 1990 and 2020, we have developed a fixed effects model and employed legal origins as an instrumental variable to examine the influence of land property rights security on LUE. Our findings demonstrate that the security of land property rights significantly influences LUE, with common law countries exhibiting higher levels of LUE compared to civil law countries while controlling for other variables. Stability in property rights encourages long-term investments in infrastructure and sustainable land management practices, thereby enhancing land productivity and mitigating urban sprawl. Furthermore, safeguarding property rights limits governments’ power to expropriate lands, facilitating rational and efficient land transactions that contribute towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract Background Work-family conflict among physicians has many adverse consequences, like reduced work engagement and impaired well-being. However, relatively little research has been conducted on the impact of work-family conflict on specific pathways of physician well-being. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between work-family conflict and employee well-being among physicians and to explore the mediating role of job satisfaction and work engagement in this relationship. Methods Using data from a cross-sectional survey of 2,480 physicians in Jilin Province, China, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was applied in this study to examine the direct and indirect effects of work-family conflict on employee well-being and to assess the mediating roles of job satisfaction and work engagement therein. Results The employee well-being score of physicians in Jilin Province was 5.16 ± 1.20. The univariate analysis results indicated significant disparities in employee well-being scores across different age groups, marital statuses, and professional titles. Work-family conflict was significantly negatively associated with employee well-being, while job satisfaction and work engagement were significantly positively associated with employee well-being. In addition, job satisfaction and work engagement were found to mediate the association between work-family conflict and employee well-being, and work engagement was considered to mediate the association between job satisfaction and employee well-being. Conclusions Our study confirms that work-family conflict negatively affects physicians’ employee well-being. Moreover, our investigation revealed that the association between work-family conflict and employee well-being is influenced by both job satisfaction and work engagement and that work engagement plays a mediating role in the link between job satisfaction and employee well-being. Therefore, we propose that hospital administrators should rationally allocate organizational resources and develop manageable schedules to enhance physicians’ employee well-being.

Abstract The replacement of farmland by native hygro-plants is increasingly common globally within the context of wetland ecosystem restoration. Understanding the long-term effects of this replacement on the abundance and persistence of soil organic carbon (SOC) in mountain marshes is important for soil carbon management. Here, the restored plateau mountain marshes of Duliu River Wetland Provincial Nature Reserve, China was selected. The properties, soil moisture content (SMC), pH, texture, free-form iron oxides ( $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{d}}$$ ), amorphous iron oxides ( $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{o}}$$ ), mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC), and iron-bound organic carbon (Fe-OC) were analyzed in topsoil samples (0 ~ 20 cm) during the restoration of rice paddies to Sphagnum palustre L. wetlands for 0, 2, 10, and 20 years. Natural Sphagnum wetlands were also used as the control. We found that marsh restoration increased SMC, $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{o}}$$ , $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{d}}$$ , $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{o}}$$ / $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{d}}$$ , SOC, MAOC, Fe-OC, Fe-OC/SOC, but decreased the MAOC/SOC ratio. MAOC/SOC ratio of marshes were expectedly lower than the proportion of labile SOC in total SOC during the restoration period. SMC, SOC, and MAOC were higher in the natural Sphagnum wetlands than in other habitats. Both SOC and Fe-OC/SOC were positively correlated with SMC, $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{o}}$$ , $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{d}}$$ , $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{o}}$$ / $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{d}}$$ , and Fe-OC, but negatively correlated with soil pH. MAOC/SOC was negatively correlated with SMC, $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{o}}$$ and $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{o}}$$ / $$\:{\text{F}\text{e}}_{\text{d}}$$ . These results emphasized the significance of reconverting rice paddies to marsh wetlands for increasing the sequestration of labile SOC and Fe-OC. Further studies are required to identify and quantify the organo-mineral stabilization mechanisms of SOC at the different SOC fractionations throughout the restoration period.

As the scale of urban rail transit (URT) networks expands, the study of URT resilience is essential for safe and efficient operations. This paper presents a comprehensive review of URT resilience and highlights potential trends and directions for future research. First, URT resilience is defined by three primary abilities: absorption, resistance, and recovery, and four properties: robustness, vulnerability, rapidity, and redundancy. Then, the metrics and assessment approaches for URT resilience were summarized. The metrics are divided into three categories: topology-based, characteristic-based, and performance-based, and the assessment methods are divided into four categories: topological, simulation, optimization, and data-driven. Comparisons of various metrics and assessment approaches revealed that the current research trend in URT resilience is increasingly favoring the integration of traditional methods, such as conventional complex network analysis and operations optimization theory, with new techniques like big data and intelligent computing technology, to accurately assess URT resilience. Finally, five potential trends and directions for future research were identified: analyzing resilience based on multisource data, optimizing train diagram in multiple scenarios, accurate response to passenger demand through new technologies, coupling and optimizing passenger and traffic flows, and optimal line design.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate whether triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI) plays a mediating role between obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and hypertension. The study analyzed clinical data from a total of 840 OSAS patients at Wuhan Union Hospital between January 2020 to December 2023. The association between TyG-BMI and hypertension was examined using restricted cubic spline regression and logistic regression. Mediation effect analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between OSAS, TyG-BMI, and the risk of hypertension. Severe OSAS was associated with a significantly increased risk of hypertension compared to mild OSAS (OR = 1.752, p = 0.013). There was a positive linear relationship between TyG-BMI and the risk of hypertension (P-non-linear = 0.535). The risk of hypertension increased with increasing TyG-BMI, with a significantly higher risk of hypertension in the fourth quartile (OR = 3.407, p

Abstract Objectives This study addresses the growing importance of health economics and pharmacoeconomics in preparing healthcare professionals for economic decision-making, particularly in China’s evolving healthcare system. Despite their significance, these subjects are inconsistently included in health education in Southwest China, making it crucial to assess students' proficiency and educational needs. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to October 2023, involving medical and pharmaceutical programs across universities in Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Yunnan. Data on students' knowledge, attitudes, and proficiency were captured using a structured questionnaire. Advanced statistical methods, including descriptive analysis, ANOVA, regression analysis, PCA, and Spearman correlation heatmaps, were employed for data analysis using IBM SPSS and Python. The sample consisted of 781 students, with the survey facilitated via the Questionnaire Star platform. Results The survey revealed moderate comprehension of health economics and pharmacoeconomics among 781 health-related students, with an average knowledge score of 2.9. The majority were pharmacy students (45.58%) and aged 21–24 years (65.81%) with a significant female majority (64.92%). Academic year significantly influenced understanding, while gender differences were minimal. Spearman correlation indicated a strong linkage (0.78) between Supply and Demand and Cost Effectiveness, with minimal correlations between knowledge and attitudes towards the educational importance of health economics. Multiple regression analysis highlighted the impact of gender and academic progression on students' comprehension of Supply and Demand concepts, as well as the influence of knowledge levels on their attitudes towards the importance of health economics education. PCA indicated the complex structure of knowledge and attitudes. Conclusions The study found moderate knowledge levels in health economics among health professions students in Southwest China, with academic year affecting comprehension and minimal gender differences. Pharmacy students had higher proficiency in pharmaceutical-related areas, but gaps in complex topics like 'Economic Evaluation' highlight the need for targeted educational improvements to better prepare students for healthcare economic decision-making.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) holds significant potential across environmental monitoring, materials science, and biomedical applications. However, challenges regarding ultra-sensitive detection and repeatability are bottlenecks for practical applications, especially in terms of detection uniformity. In this study, we utilized surface acoustic waves (SAW) in conjunction with Raman spectroscopy to actively enrich 5 μL of 50 nm gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), thereby achieving innovative SERS-active sensing. This dynamic enrichment process enables the dense and uniform aggregation of AuNPs in droplets, thereby facilitating reliable ultrasensitive detection. The SAW system was further optimized through hydrophobic surface treatment. Using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid as a probe analyte, our SAW-SERS method successfully detected concentrations as low as 10−8 mol/L. The surface acoustic waves had the capability to significantly amplify Raman signal intensity up to 100 compared to conventional drying methodologies. This SAW-induced AuNP clustering technology offers a rapid, label-free SERS sensing method characterized by exceptional sensitivity and uniformity.

The Yangtze River is the mother river of China. To promote the aquatic ecosystem protection of the great river, the Project of Yangtze Fisheries Resources and Environment Investigation (2017–2021) supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, P. R. China carried out by 24 institutes and universities that located in the Yangtze River basin surveys the status of (1) fish species composition and spatial distribution, (2) current fish abundance, (3) endangered fishes, (4) Yangtze finless porpoise, (5) aquatic eco-environments, (6) water-level fluctuation areas, (7) capture fisheries and recreational fisheries of the Yangtze River mainstream and 10 of its main tributaries, including Yalong River, Heng River, Min River (including Dadu River), Chishui River, Tuo River, Jialing River, Wu River, Han River, Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake. The results showed that there were 443 fish species (belonging to 163 genus, 37 families, and 18 orders) before 2017, but only 323 fish species (including 15 new recorded exotic species) were recorded in the project of 2017–2021. Among them, Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratus, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, Coilia brachygnathus, Silurus asotus, Saurogobio dabryi, Ctenopharyngodon idellus, Pelteobagrus nitidus, Hemiculter leucisculus, Siniperca chuatsi, Coreius heterodon, Culter alburnus, Parabramis pekinensis, and Aristichthys nobilis were the dominant species across the whole Yangtze River system. It is estimated that there were 886 million individuals weighing 124.8 million kg, merely equivalent to 27.3% of the resources in 1950s, 30.9% of the resources in 1960s, or 58.7% of the resources in 1980s. In the new list of protected fishes that recorded in the Yangtze River system, only 15 of 29 were collected in this project of 2017–2021. Psephurus gladius has been affirmed to be Extinct by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The wild individuals of Tenualosa reevesii and Luciobrama macrocephalus have disappeared for many years and maybe have been extinct already. Acipenser dabryanus has been affirmed to be Extinct in the Wild by IUCN. The natural propagations of A. sinensis, Myxocyprinus asiaticus and Trachidermus fasciatus have been interrupted for many years. The populations of Yangtze finless porpoise in the Yangtze River mainstream, Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake have steadily rising sizes and expanding distributions in 2017–2021. Parts of them migrate from one region to another with the seasons, which would result in the fluctuation of Yangtze finless porpoise population within some regions. The conventional indicators of water quality in the Yangtze River system were good and conformed to the water quality criteria of fishery in 2017–2021. In the last 40 years, the maximum surface water area in the Yangtze River basin extended to approximately 63,360 km2, the minimum surface water area covered approximately 26,396 km2, and the seasonal water-level fluctuation areas occupied approximately 36,964 km2. Compared with 1984–2000 period, the 2001–2020 period witnessed an overall decreasing trend in the frequency of surface water occurrence within about 25,869 km2 of aquatic areas. From 1984 to 2000 period to 2001–2020 period, permanent surface water has decreased by nearly 8,750 km2. In 2017, the fishermen were mainly 40–60 years old and their educational levels were mainly lower than junior high school. In 2017, most anglers were older than 40 and used hand rod and/or sea rod. Their average catch of each time was mainly less than 1 kg. Results suggested that the fishing ban in key waters of the Yangtze River basin is not only an ecological project of aquatic ecosystem conservation, but also a livelihood project for the fisherman to embrace industrial transformation and improve their living conditions. After the implementation of the fishing ban, the fisheries resources would gradually recover, and the Yangtze finless porpoise population size would also see a steady increase. However, the endangered species would remain threatened for a long time. The degraded waterbodies and water-level fluctuation areas would be the key restrictive factors for future aquatic ecosystem recovery in the Yangtze River basin. Since this survey was carried out before the fishing ban, the current results could provide a baseline for future evaluation of the effect of the Yangtze River fishing ban.
