1. Production of Martian fiber by in-situ resource utilization strategy

Abstract

Many countries and commercial organizations have shown great interest in constructing Martian base. In-situ resource utilization (ISRU) provides a cost-effective way to achieve this ambitious goal. In this paper, we proposed to use Martian soil simulant to produce fiber to satisfy material requirement for the construction of Martian base. The composition, melting behavior and fiber forming process of soil simulant was studied, and continuous fiber with a maximum strength of 1320 MPa was obtained on a spinning facility. The findings of this study demonstrate the feasibility of ISRU to prepare Martian fiber from the soil on the Mars, offering a new way to get key materials for the construction of Martian base.

Abstract

BackgroundTo assess the association of co-existing MRI lesions with knee pain at rest or on joint loading.MethodsWe included participants from Osteoarthritis Initiative whose pain score, measured by WOMAC sub-scales, differed by ≥1 point at rest (in bed at night, sitting/lying down) or on joint loading (walking, stairs) between two knees. Cartilage morphology, bone marrow lesions, meniscus extrusion, meniscus morphology, Hoffa's synovitis and synovitis-effusion were assessed using the compartment-specific MRI Osteoarthritis Knee Score. We performed latent class analyses to identify subgroups of co-existing MRI lesions and fitted a conditional logistic regression model to examine their associations with knee pain.ResultsAmong 130 eligible participants, we identified five subgroups of knees according to patterns of co-existing MRI lesions: I. minimal lesions; II. mild lesions; III. moderate morphological lesions; IV. moderate multiple reactive lesions; and V. severe lesions. Compared with subgroup I, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of greater pain in bed at night were 1.6 (0.3, 7.2), 2.2 (0.5, 9.5), 6.2 (1.3, 29.6) and 11.2 (2.1, 59.2) for subgroups II-V, respectively. A similar association was observed between aforementioned subgroups and pain with sitting/lying down. The ORs (95% CI) of greater pain with walking were 1.0 (reference), 1.7 (0.5, 6.1), 0.7 (0.2, 2.3), 5.0 (1.4, 18.6) and 7.9 (2.0, 31.5) for subgroup I-V, respectively. The corresponding analysis for pain on stairs showed similar results.ConclusionsDistinct patterns of co-existing MRI lesions have different implications for the pathogenesis of osteoarthritic knee pain occurring with/without joint loading.

36. Sevoflurane alleviates early brain injury in rats with subarachnoid hemorrhage

Abstract

Objective To explore the protective mechanism of sevoflurane (Sev) on early brain injury (EBI) in rats with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Methods Rats were randomly divided into sham operation group (sham group), model group , Sev low dose(Sev-L, 1.5%)and high dose (Sev-H, 3%) groups, Sev+Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway specific inhibitor DKK1 group (Sev 3%+DKK1 5 μg/kg) with 18 rats in each. After 24 hours, the neurological function of rats was scored with the improved Garcia scale, the permeability of the blood-brain barrier was detected with Evans blue (EB), and the severity of SAH was evaluated with the SAH grading system; the brain tissue water content (BWC) was calculated; the neuronal apoptosis was detected with TUNEL immunofluorescence staining; the protein expression of Wnt3a, GSK-3β, p-GSK-3β, β-catenin, ZO-1, occludin and claudin-5, MMP-9, Bcl-2, Bax in brain tissue was detected with Western blot. Results Compared with the sham group, the neurological score, expression of Bcl-2, occludin, ZO-1, claudin-5, Wnt3a, and β-catenin in brain tissues in the model group reduced significantly (P＜0.05), the SAH score, EB exudation, cell apoptosis rate, expression of Bax, MMP-9, and p-GSK-3β/GSK-3β ratio in brain tissue increased significantly(P＜0.05); compared with model group, the neurological score, expression of Bcl-2, occludin, ZO-1, claudin-5, Wnt3a, and β-catenin in brain tissues in the Sev-L group and Sev-H group increased significantly(P＜0.05), the SAH score, EB exudation, cell apoptosis rate, expression of Bax, MMP-9, and p-GSK-3β/GSK-3β ratio in brain tissue reduced significantly (P＜0.05); DKK1 significantly weakened protective effect of Sev on EBI after SAH. Conclusions Sev may activate Wnt/β-catenin pathway, improve BBB, inhibit neuronal apoptosis and reduce EBI after SAH.
