Fluorine pollution in saline-sodic soils has become an important environmental problem, but little is known about the interaction between Al2(SO4)3 and fluorine when Al2(SO4)3 is used to improve saline-sodic soils. In this study, batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the impacts of different saline-sodic soils with Al2(SO4)3 on fluorine adsorption, and the mechanisms of adsorption were characterized by SEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS analysis. The results showed that fluorine adsorption decreased with increasing soil salinity, and the addition of Al2(SO4)3 increased the adsorption of fluorine in soils. Among the three saline-sodic soils, Al2(SO4)3 contributed greatly to fluorine adsorption by mildly saline-sodic soils, with a range of 40.84%-69.70%. Fluorine adsorption isotherms could be properly described by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. At higher fluorine equilibrium concentrations, the adsorption amount of fluorine was greater for soils with Al→F. Both the soil porosity and the number of aggregates of saline-sodic soils were increased after adding Al2(SO4)3 for adsorption. Functional groups such as Si-O-Si, H-O-H, C-H, -OH, and Al-O-H were involved in the reaction process. Fluorine adsorption on saline-sodic soils refers to the ligand exchange and electrostatic adsorption, and F− replaces -OH on the soil surface. This work may provide a theoretical reference for the changes in fluorine chemical behavior when Al2(SO4)3 ameliorates saline-sodic soils.

Fluorine stability in the soil is crucial to protecting the groundwater and the food chain from pollution by fluorine, which was abundantly present (762.78-1330.66 mg/kg) in soda saline-alkali soil areas of western Jilin Province. This study investigated the fluorine distribution and pollution level in soil. Two representative areas in Zhenlai County, namely Chagan and Hatu villages, were selected to gather soda saline-alkali soil profiles (0-20, 20-40, and 40-60 cm) from different cultivation years (i.e. 3, 5, 8, 10, 13, 15, 18, and 20). The results revealed that fluorine content in soil decreased with increasing cultivation years. In the soil profiles, fluorine and water-soluble fluorine concentrations followed the order of 40-6020-400-20 cm, while the contents of exchangeable and organic matter-bound fluorine decreased with the increasing profile depth. Rice planting increased the content of macroaggregates with diameters2 and 2-0.25 mm, which significantly improved the aggregate structure of the soil. The fluorine content was the greatest in microaggregate with particle sizes0.053 mm in the aggregates' sizes. Rice planting in saline-alkali soil reduced the contents of water-soluble and exchangeable fluorine, while enhancing the content of organic matter-bound fluorine, thereby reducing the bioavailability of fluorine in the soil and the risk of fluorine migration through the groundwater. The degree of soil pollution decreased with increasing plantation years, and the soil became slightly polluted after 15 years of rice planting. The rice plants grew normally after years of improving fluorine-containing saline-alkali land, and the fluorine content was within the safe limit.

Steel slag (SS) contains high amounts of metal oxides and could be applied as the catalyst or support material for the reforming of biomass derived tar. In this research, steel slag supported nickel catalysts were prepared by impregnation of a small amount of nickel (0–10 wt%) and calcination at 900 °C, and then tested for the catalytic reforming of biomass primary tar from pine sawdust pyrolysis. The steel slag after calcination was mainly composed of Fe2O3 and MgFe2O4, and granular NiO particles was formed and highly dispersed on the surface of nickel loaded steel slag which lead to a porous structure of the catalysts. The steel slag showed good activity on converting biomass primary tar into syngas, and its performance can be further enhanced by the loading of nickel. The yield of H2 increased significantly with the increase of nickel loading amount, while excessive nickel loading resulted in the decrease in CO and CH4 yields and significant increase in CO2 yield. The presence of steam contributed to enhancing the tar steam reforming as well as reactions between steam and produced gases, while decrease the contact probability between the reactants and the active sites of catalysts, leading to a little decrease in tar conversion efficiency but significant increase in syngas yield. The iron and nickel oxides were reduced by the syngas (CO and H2) from the biomass pyrolysis, and stable and porous structure was formed on the surface of the nickel loaded catalysts during tar reforming.

Microbially induced phosphate precipitation (MIPP) is an advanced bioremediation technology to immobilize heavy metals in soil. In this study, an indigenous bacterial strain LRP3, identified as Rahnella sp., was isolated from Cu-contaminated dark brown soil in the mining area. Strain LRP3 could produce phytase and alkaline phosphatase to degrade phytic acid, which released soluble phosphate to the bacterial culture. Due to the metabolism of bacterial growth, the pH value of bacterial culture was increased. The minimum inhibitory concentration of Cu (II) to bacterial growth in solution was up to 130 mg/L. The bacterial culture could rapidly precipitate Cu (II) in solution through MIPP. The analysis results of Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) revealed that the precipitate form by bacterial culture was rod-shaped Cu3(OH)3PO4 crystal with a diameter of 10 μm. The bacterial culture decreased the content of DTPA-Cu of 83 mg/kg soil in the soil by 58.2%, 61.5% and 75.8% after 5, 10 and 30 days of incubation, respectively, at the temperature of 25 °C. The results indicate that MIPP-based bioremediation by Rahnella sp. LRP3 is a practical, environmental friendly technology for the cleaning-up of copper-contaminated soil.

Agricultural tillage practices play an important role in the production and consumption of greenhouse gases (GHGs) that contribute substantially to the global warming. To explore GHG diffusion characteristic and seek for environment-friendly tillage methods, four tillage systems consisting of continuous rotary tillage (CR), continuous no tillage (CN), ploughing-rotary tillage (PR), and ploughing-no tillage (PN) were designed, and vertical variations of GHG concentrations under different tillage systems were investigated. Mean CO2 concentration in the soil profile was increased significantly with the increase of soil depth. Higher soil moisture promoted CO2 production. However, the influence of soil temperature on the content of CO2 was not obvious. The concentrations of CH4 in soil at 0–20-cm depth were greater than that of 20–40 cm, which was mainly affected by fertilization. The trend of N2O concentration variation in soil was consistent with that of CO2. The diffusion flux of CO2 in soil was all positive, and it changes greatly in the whole growth cycle of maize, which had obvious correlation with precipitation. The CH4 diffusion flux decreased with the increase of soil depth, and the change trend of 0–20-cm soil layer diffusion flux was consistent with the gas concentration. The 20–40-cm soil layer fluctuated greatly, which was mainly affected by water content, and the whole value was negative after jointing. The trend of N2O diffusion flux was similar to that of CH4. In the whole maize growth period, except for CH4 in 20–40-cm soil layer, the cumulative diffusion fluxes of greenhouse gases in each treatment were all positive, indicating that the whole farmland soil was the emission source of greenhouse gases. The effect of three greenhouse gases on greenhouse effect was CO2 > N2O > CH4, and the comprehensive warming potential of different tillage methods was CN > CR > PR> PN. So PN is the best tillage mode to reduce GHG emissions in soil profile under the test conditions.

An appropriate tillage method must be implemented by maize growers to improve phosphorus dynamics in the soil in order to increase phosphorus uptake by plant. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of tillage systems on phosphorus and its fractions in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils under maize. An experimental field was established, with phosphate fertilizers applied to four treatment plots: continuous rotary tillage (CR), continuous no-tillage (CN), plowing-rotary tillage (PR), and plowing-no tillage (PN). Under the different tillage methods, the available P was increased in the non-rhizosphere region. However, the concentration of available P was reduced in the rhizosphere soil region. The soil available P decreased with the age of the crop until the maize reached physiological maturity. The non-rhizosphere region had 132.9%, 82.5%, 259.8%, and 148.4% more available P than the rhizosphere region under the CR, PR, CN, and PN treatments, respectively. The continuous no-tillage method (CN) improved the uptake of soil phosphate by maize. The concentrations of Ca2-P, Ca8-P, Fe-P, Al-P and O-P at the maturity stage were significantly lower than other seedling stages. However, there was no significant relationship between total P and the P fractions. Therefore, a continuous no-tillage method (CN) can be used by farmers to improve phosphorus availability for spring maize. Soil management practices minimizing soil disturbance can be used to impove phosphorus availability for maize roots, increase alkaline phosphatase activity in the rhizosphere soil and increase the abundance of different phosphorus fractions.

High ash-containing paper sludge ash (PSA) has been investigated in terms of its use as a low-cost catalyst for primary pyrolysis tar cracking in the two-stage pyrolysis of biomass. Experimental results showed that tar yields decreased significantly using PSA as catalyst in comparison with the thermal cracking experiments. A consequent increase in total gas yield was obtained. The yields of H2, CH4, and CO2 increased significantly under the catalytic effect of PSA, particularly the H2 yield almost doubled, while CO yields showed a slight decrease due to the consumption reactions. Thermogravimetric analysis of the fresh and spent PSA showed that carbon particles formed along with the tar decomposition, while the catalytic reactivity of the PSA was not reduced because of the participation of carbon particles in tar reforming. Catalytic performance of Cu and Zn catalysts was investigated during rice husk (RH) high-temperature pyrolysis under isothermal conditions in a micro-fluidized bed reactor. The results showed that the presence of Cu and Zn evidently influenced the release characteristics and conversion of the gas components. The impregnated Cu promoted the conversion of H2, CH4, CO and CO2, while Zn showed positive catalytic effect on the conversion of H2, CH4 and CO2 and negative effect on the conversion of CO. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the residue chars revealed that metallic copper nanoparticles (Cu0) were formed during Cu impregnated biomass pyrolysis. Textural characterization and SEM images showed that the impregnation of Cu and Zn, particularly Zn, promoted the generation of micropores and mesopores, with the pore sizes predominantly at around 1.3 nm and 3.9 nm. Reaction kinetics for generating these gases was studied based on model fitting method, and the most probable reaction mechanism was obtained based on the relative error between experimental and calculated conversion data. The resulting apparent activation energies were 85.08, 12.56, 49.72 and 38.37 kJ/mol for the formation of H2, CO, CH4 and CO2 from pure RH pyrolysis. The presence of Cu decreased the forming activation energies of the four gases, and Zn decrease the forming activation energies of H2, CH4 and CO2 while increased the value for the formation of CO.

The control strategy of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is an effective and efficient technique to provide frequency supporting for distributed generations. However, the effect of damping is often neglected in a large number of control strategies about VSG. The damping is often used to reduce the active power oscillation, and it relates to the steady-state performance of the system in island micro-grids. This paper analyses the influence of the parameters of damping and inertia on the system in island micro-girds. Furthermore, a hybrid control method of the inertia and the damping is proposed to optimize the frequency curve of the system and enhance the stability of the system. By deploying this method, the decay rate of frequency under load disturbance becomes slower, and the recovery rate of frequency becomes faster after disturbance. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed method improves the dynamic and static performance of the system in island micro-grids.

Soil contamination by toxic heavy metals such as copper is a serious problem. In this study, the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) extracted from Rahnella sp. LRP3 was found with the potential of immobilizing Cu-polluted in soil. The EPS could bond to Cu (II) through functional groups (polysaccharides, amide, proteins, and carboxyl groups), which further developed into the porous sphere with a diameter of 20 μm. True-color three-dimensional (3D) imaging exploits spatial and spectral information and can enable accurate feature extraction and object classification. The existing methods, however, are limited by data collection mechanisms when realizing true-color 3D imaging. We overcome this problem and present a novel true-color 3D imaging method based on a 32-channel hyperspectral LiDAR (HSL) covering a 431–751 nm spectral range. We conducted two experiments, one with nine-color card papers and the other with seven different colored objects. We used the former to investigate the effect of true-color 3D imaging and determine the optimal spectral bands for compositing true-color, and the latter to explore the classification potential based on the true-color feature using polynomial support vector machine (SVM) and Gaussian naive Bayes (NB) classifiers. Since using all bands of HSL will cause color distortions, the optimal spectral band combination for better compositing the true-color were selected by principal component analysis (PCA) and spectral correlation measure (SCM); PCA emphasizes the amount of information in band combinations, while SCM focuses on correlation between bands. The results show that the true-color 3D imaging can be realized based on HSL measurements, and three spectral bands of 466, 546, and 626 nm were determined. Comparing reflectance of the three selected bands, the overall classification accuracy of seven different colored objects was improved by 14.6% and 8.25% based on SVM and NB, respectively, classifiers after converting spectral intensities into true-color information. Overall, this study demonstrated the potential of HSL system in retrieving true-color and facilitating target recognition, and can serve as a guide in developing future three-channel or multi-channel true-color LiDAR.

A diverse and well-preserved fossil wood assemblage is described, for the first time, from the Middle Permian Taerlang Formation and the Upper Permian Quanzijie Formation in the vicinity of the Tianshan Town, Hami City of northwestern China. On the basis of wood microstructure, the fossil woods are classified into three genera and five species, including one new genus: Prototianshanoxylon gen. nov. and two new species: Prototianshanoxylon erdaogouense sp. nov., Prototianshanoxylon hamiense sp. nov. The new genus is characterized by window-like cross-field pitting and mixed tracheid radial wall pitting that suggest a transitional type between araucarioid-type and protopinoid-type pittings. Phytogeographically, the fossil wood assemblage is characterized by an admixture of elements of both temperate Angaran (represented by wood specimens with moderately to well defined growth rings in their secondary xylem) and tropical–subtropical north subregion of the Cathaysian floras (with wood specimens lacking well-defined growth rings). Such a phytogeographically mixed fossil wood assemblage is interpreted to represent a transitional and complex climate condition between a cool temperate and tropical to subtropical zones, showing both seasonal variation and unstable climate conditions. Previously, similarly mixed floras have already been found to exist widely in northern China ranging in age from Early to Late Permian, but the mechanisms thought to be responsible for their formation were varied and remain controversial. In this study, the formation of these mixed Permian floras of North China is linked to the closure of the Tianshan–Hingan seaway coupled with the collision and amalgamation of Siberia with North China and the Tarim block, in a manner much like closing a pair of scissors with the closure of the seaway proceeding gradually and progressively from west to the east.

The simulation of Cr(VI) behavior in an unsaturated zone and aquifer, using a 3D experimental set-up were performed to illustrate the distribution, transport and transformation of Cr(VI), and further to reveal the potential harm of Cr(VI) after entering the groundwater. The result indicated that chromium(VI) was transported in the vertical direction, meanwhile, was transported in the horizontal direction under the influence of groundwater flow. The direction and distance away from the pollution source zone had great effect on the chromium(VI) concentration. At the sampling sites near the pollution source zone, there was a sudden increase of chromium(VI) concentration. The concentration of chromium(III) concentration in some random effluent samples was not detected. Chromium had not only transported but also had fraction and specie transformation in the unsaturated zone and aquifer. The relative concentration of residue fraction chromium was decreased with time. The content of Fe-Mn oxide fraction chromium was increased with time. The relative content of exchangeable and carbonate-bound fraction chromium was lower and the content variations were not obvious. Chromium(VI) (91-98%) was first reduced to chromium(III) rapidly. The oxidation reaction occurred later and the relative content of chromium(VI) was increased again. The presence of manganese oxides under favorable soil conditions can promote the reoxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI).

Returning crop residues into fields, either alone or in combination with inorganic fertilizer, is considered as a practical way to enhance soil fertility. However, information concerning the effects of crop residues and inorganic fertilizer application on water extractable organic matter (WEOM) in soil is scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the 10-year effect of corn residue (CR) return with or without the application of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) fertilizer on the quantity and quality of WEOM in a black soil of northeast China by means of ultraviolet absorbance, fluorescence excitation--emission matrix, and derived spectroscopic indices. Animal wastes are potential sources of natural and steroidal estrogen hormones into the environment. These hormones can be removed by microorganisms with induced enzymes. Two strains of 17β-estradiol-degrading bacteria (LM1 and LY1) were isolated from animal wastes. Based on biochemical characteristics and 16 S rDNA gene sequences, we identified strains LM1 and LY1 as belonging to the genus of Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas, respectively. Bacterial co-culture containing LM1 and LY1 bacterial strains could rapidly remove approximately 98% of E2 (5 mg L−1) within 7 days. However, strains LM1 and LY1 degraded 77% and 68% of E2 when they were incubated alone, respectively. More than 90% of 17β-estradiol (E2, ≤ 20 mg L−1) could be removed by bacterial co-culture. Low C/N ratio (1:35) was more suitable for bacterial growth and E2 degradation. The optimal pH for bacterial co-culture to degrade E2 ranged from 7.00 to 9.00. Coexisting sodium acetate, glucose and sodium citrate decreased E2 degradation in the first 4 days, but more E2 was removed when they were depleted. The growth of the bacterial co-culture was not significantly decreased by Ni, Pb, Cd or Cu at or below 0.8, 1.2, 1.6 or 0.8 mg L−1, respectively. These data highlight the usefulness of bacterial co-culture in the bioremediation of estrogen-contaminated environments.

With the increase of the load and the growth of length of the line, it is not available to get the voltage rating by the conventional droop control. As a result, an improved control strategy based on dynamic virtual resistance is proposed in low-voltage DC microgrids. The designed dynamic virtual resistance is changed with the load current and the drop of voltage amplitude. The value of virtual resistance is adjusted adaptively and constantly under the work of the dynamic virtual resistance loop, so that the problem of virtual resistance value setting can be solved. At the same time, the voltage drop is reduced, circulating current is inhibited and the system power quality is improved effectively, while the system stability performance is satisfied. Simulation results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

In this work, the possibility of steel slag as an effective and low-cost catalyst for the decomposition of biomass pyrolysis tar has been explored based on the high content of iron oxides for sustainable syngas production from biomass. By simple calcination treatment at 800 °C, the loose structure of the steel slag was formed with the main chemical composition of Fe2O3 and MgFe2O4. The steel slag exhibited good catalytic activity on the cracking of biomass pyrolysis tar, and even higher tar conversion efficiency can be obtained by reusing the steel slag, leading to the increase in syngas yield. The presence of additional steam can further promote the tar reforming reactions, leading to the significant increase in H2 and CO. At 800 °C, the tar conversion efficiency reached 94.1% with a high gas yield of 493.5 mL/g. The interaction between steel slag and reductive gases resulted in the reduction of iron oxides into Fe3O4, and more pores were formed for the spent steel slag, which can enhance the contact between active sites and reactants. These characteristics indicate that steel slag has the potential to be used as an efficient catalyst with excellent stability in the long-term biomass tar removal applications.

The Mohe region is an area of continuous permafrost in northernmost China with strong similarities to other known gas-hydrate-bearing regions. Permafrost thickness is typically 20–80 m; average surface temperature ranges from −0.5 °C to −3.0 °C, and the geothermal gradient is roughly 1.6 °C/100 m. We estimate that 204.66 × 1012 m3 of hydrocarbon gases have been generated in the Mohe basin from nearly 1000 m middle Jurassic dark mudstones, providing ample gas source for gas hydrate formation. Numerous folds in the shallow section provide opportunities to trap gas within sandstones and siltstones reservoirs bounded by competent mudstone seals. Gas migration to the shallow section is enabled via fault fracture zones and fracture systems. Based on core description and observations of gas releases from drilled wells, we infer that the Mohe region could hold large quantities of natural gas in the form of gas hydrate.

Some farmland in Shenyang had been irrigated with industrial wastewater since 1962. Although wastewater irrigation was ceased in 1992, soil had been heavily polluted by heavy metals, especially by Cd. For better understanding processes of soil-heavy metal interactions, in particular, the mobility and retention mechanism of heavy metal in soil, a study on the transport and fate of heavy metals in soil zones from Shenyang suburb was carried out by column leaching tests in laboratory. Breakthrough curves of Pb, Cd, Cr(VI) and As(V) fitted by Thomas model and Yoon–Nelson model. The results of fitted breakthrough curves showed that transport rates of the four heavy metals in the soil zones followed the order: Cr(VI) > As(V) > Cd > Pb, which indicated that Cr(VI) was much more mobile, and Pb was comparatively unmovable. Cr in effluents and As were almost entirely Cr(VI) and As(V), respectively, and no Cr(III) and As(III) was ever detected during the leaching tests. The contents of Pb, Cd, Cr and As in leached soils decreased in the order of Pb > Cd > Cr > As, which suggested that adsorption ability of soil to Pb was greatest and to As was least. The methods of selective sequential extraction and solvent extraction were used to determine the fractions of Pb, Cd, Cr, As and the valent states of Cr, As [Cr(VI) or Cr(III), As(V) or As(III)] in original soils and in leached soils. After leaching tests, the relative and absolute concentrations of exchangeable, carbonate, Fe–Mn oxide and organic fraction of each element were all increased, which enhanced the potential mobility and risk of Pb, Cd, Cr and As to soil/groundwater system. The relative concentrations of Cr(III) and As(III) in different depth of the soil zones after leaching tests were increased by about 6.0% and 5.6%, respectively. Cr(III) and As(III) tended to be adsorbed by soils, which reduced the mobility of them into groundwater.

The adsorption/desorption of Pb, Cd and Cr(VI) on moderately contaminated farmland soils in Northeast China and the effect of pH value on adsorption/desorption were investigated. Soil column leaching experiment was also carried out to further understand the mobility of the three metals in aeration zone of soil. Both Langmuir and Freundlich model gave good fits to the adsorption data of Pb and Cd, while the adsorption data of Cr(VI) followed linear adsorption isotherm. The adsorption/desorption of Pb, Cd and Cr(VI) obtained equilibrium in a few hours. Adsorption amounts of the three metals decreased in the order: Pb > Cd ≫ Cr(VI). Desorption of the metals was insignificant at pH 5.0. Pb and Cd adsorption increased with pH, while Cr(VI) decreased. The effect of pH on desorption was contrary to that of adsorption. Leaching experiment showed that the mobility of these metals followed the order of Cr(VI) ≫ Cd > Pb, which was consistent with the adsorption/desorption study. The results suggest that once soil is polluted by wastewater containing Pb and Cd, Pb and Cd tend to accumulating in topsoil and move downward very slowly, while the mobility of Cr(VI) in soil/groundwater system is much high because only limited amount of Cr(VI) were adsorbed by soil.

The significant investigation was performed to establish a chemical baseline for snowfall in Northeast of China since there was no such record. The chemical and mineral composition of snowfall samples were evaluated in Jilin Province, Northeast China. The specific purposes of the present study are to characterize the chemical and mineral composition of melted snow-water samples and to identify the sources of atmospheric pollutants, as well as to investigate the spatial variability of melted snow-water chemistry in this region. Snowfall and aerosol samples were collected from Changchun city, Baicheng city, and Yanji city during November 2015 to March 2016. All the filtered (0.45 m) snow-water was analyzed for conductivity, pH, major cations (Na+, K+, NH4 +, Ca2+, Mg2+) and anions (F−, SO4 2−, Cl−, NO3 -, HCO3 -). The pH of these samples ranged from 6.01 to 7.10, with an average value of 6.44. The conductivity ranged between 17.50 μs cm-1 and 86.00 μs cm-1 with an average value of 55.0 μs cm-1. These parameters indicated high chemical concentrations in the snow-water. It was observed that Ca2+ and NH4 + were the major cations which accounted the concentration for 5.05% to 18.71% and 3.47 to15.54%. HCO3 - and SO4 2- were major anions which accounted the concentration for 23.41% to 38.49% and 21.10% to 35.24%, respectively. (SO4 2- + NO3 -)/ (Ca2+ + NH4 +) was 1.38. The organic carbon of particles in the snowfall was higher and the average content was 52.85 g kg-1. The size of the snow-water particles in the three Cities was mainly based on clay complexes ( (>200 μm)> (20-200 μm)> (2-20 μm). The dominant mineral of particles in the snow-water was quartz and feldspar, while clay mineral was composed of montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite and vermiculite. According to the above analyses, the possible sources of the particles in the snowfall should be soil and ground dust and co al-burning.

A study of the annealing behavior of nano-layered steel produced by heavy cold-rolling of lath martensite has been conducted. The results show that the nano-layered structure of lath martensite was stable until annealing at 623 K for 3.6 ks. Subsequently, discontinuous recrystallization began in some regions after 673 K annealing and finished after 873 K annealing. The nano-layered structure in the specimens annealed for 3.6 ks at 673–773 K changed into the multiphase nano-structure composed of equiaxed ferrite grains and carbides. Furthermore, the phenomenon of fracture delamination was observed from the tension fractures of the specimens as-rolled and annealed up to 773 K for 3.6 ks. In addition, the mechanisms of structure stability and mechanical behavior are also discussed.

Bulk material processed by the severe plastic deformation (SPD) technique were found possessing unique physical and mechanical properties [1–3]. SPD material were either nonferrous metal or soft steel. Recently, some researchers attempted to apply this technique to hard-to-work materials [4]. The present authors developed a new SPD process named Cylinder Covered Compression (CCC) and applied it to nodular iron [5]. Our previous work showed that graphite nodules became small with two extended tails along the direction transverse to the compressing force during hot-compression. After severe deformation, a large number of graphite flakes formed a lamellar structure with the metal matrix. This study aimed to build a deformation model of graphite in hot-compressed nodular iron, and then the model was used to explain why graphite area fraction increased on the axial sections of the specimen after more than 80% reduction. The nodular iron was obtained from the China Railway Shanhaiguan Bridge Co. Ltd, as 22.6 mm thick plates with a chemical composition (mass%) of 3.57C, 2.55Si, 0.22Mn, 0.021P, 0.013S and the balance in Fe. A new SPD process, named Cylinder Covered Compression (CCC), was developed by the present authors. The schematic illustration of the CCC process is shown in Fig. 1. Specimens, 8 mm in diameter with a 20 mm height, were machined from the cast plates. Cylinders of an 8 mm inner diameter and 10 mm outer diameter were made of medium carbon steel (0.45%C). The specimens enclosed by the cylinders were compressed on a Gleeble 3500 Machine. The details of the thermomechanical treatments are listed in Table I. The 30, 50, 65 and 80% deformed specimens were prepared by one pass of hot-compression. The 80% deformed specimens were cut into pieces, had surface layers ground away, were then stacked, embedded in a cylinder, and hotcompressed again. The 94% deformed specimen was prepared by two passes of about 80% hot-compressions.

A new severe plastic deformation (SPD) process for cast iron named cylinder covered compression (CCC) is developed by the present authors. In CCC process, specimens are embedded in a steel cylinder and hot-compressed. Then the compressed material is cut into pieces, machined out of surface layers, stacked, embedded in a cylinder and hot-compressed again. By CCC process, spheroidal cast iron has been successfully hot compressed up to 99.2% reduction in height. The shape ratio of deformed graphite, β, increases as the amount of reduction increases up to 80%, after which β changes with no relationship of the reduction. In case of 80% deformed specimens, a lamellar structure of graphite and metal matrix forms. Further deformation leads to the decrease of the thickness of graphite and the fragmentation of graphite.

A new group contribution method has been proposed which only requires the molecular structure to predict the entropy of vaporization at the normal boiling point. The 483 compounds used to determine the group increments include a wide variety of organic substances. The average prediction error of the new method for these compounds is 1.4%. An extensive comparison has been made between the authors method and previously proposed techniques, and the results show that the new method has wider applicability and higher accuracy

On the basis of reduced PVT data of liquids in the literature, a new generalized PVT equation for predicting volumes or densities of compressed liquids is proposed: where A = Σ5i=0aiTir and B = Σ2j=0bjωj. All the parameter values are determined by fitting with experimental data. In comparing the predicted volumes with experimental values, the overall average absolute percent deviation of 1126 data points is 0.96 for the equation proposed and 2.83 for the Yen-Woods correlation; and that of 1065 data points is 0.84 for the equation proposed and 1.44 for the COSTALD correlation.
