Abstract Background Omicron variants are currently the predominant circulating lineage worldwide and most cases are mild or asymptomatic. The Omicron variant is characterized by high transmissibility and immune evasion. Early identification of Omicron cases in clinical settings is crucial for controlling its spread. Previous studies have indicated that changes in hematological parameters can be used to predict the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the role of hematological parameters in non-severe and asymptomatic cases remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the role of hematological parameters in non-severe and asymptomatic Omicron variant infections. Methods Hematological parameters and results were analyzed and compared in symptomatic (n = 356) and asymptomatic (n = 171) groups respectively, and between these two groups with positive COVID-19 tests. The utility of hematological parameters for predicting positive COVID-19 tests was analyzed using receiver operating characteristic curves. Results Individuals with non-severe cases exhibited decreased levels of platelets, lymphocytes, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes (%), eosinophils (%), and basophils (%), while exhibiting elevated counts of monocytes, neutrophils (%), monocytes (%), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and C-reactive protein (CRP) when compared to suspected cases or asymptomatic carriers. In asymptomatic patients, positive carriers had lower leukocyte, neutrophil, and lymphocyte counts but higher monocyte, monocyte (%), PLR, and CRP levels than negative carriers. Basophil counts combined with lymphocytes or the PLR demonstrated a more significant predictive value in screening non-severe cases earlier compared to other parameters. The combined assessment of the monocyte (%) and the PLR had the highest area under the curve for diagnosing asymptomatic carriers. Conclusions Circulating basophils, alone or in combination with other hematological parameters, may be used as efficient biomarkers for early screening of non-severe Omicron cases.

Gully erosion is one of the most severe types of land degradation, hindering food production and sustainable agricultural development. However, the historical evolution process and the impact of land use change on gully erosion remain unclear. To address this issue, we conducted a field investigation on gully erosion in 2018 and interpreted land use and gullies using historical remote sensing images in 1968 and 1978 over an area of 84.48 km2. The study found that from 1968 to 1978 to 2018, all gully morphological parameters including gully length density and gully areal density increased significantly. The main origin of gully erosion found was from dry farmland. The annual soil loss rate induced by gully erosion was 1.46 mm during 1968–2018. Gully erosion rates were higher during 1968–1978 than during 1978–2018. Furthermore, the length, areal and volumetric erosion rates in gullies formed by multiple gullies merging was greater than that of newly formed gullies (NFG) and gullies developing continuously from a single pre-existing gully, while the widening rate of NFG was highest. Gully erosion poses greater threat to ecological and food security globally. The gully development rate and the contributions of primary influencing factors have not been thoroughly understood, primarily due to the complicated environmental conditions characterized by climate, soil, topography, and human activities. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the gully development and contributions of its driving factors from 2013 to 2021 based on historical Google Earth images and field investigation in a typical rolling hilly watershed of northeast China. The climatic factors reflected by precipitation, topographical factors related to gully, and anthropological factors reflected by tillage ridge orientation and linear anthropological factors (LAF) including roads and shelterbelts were obtained. The tillage effect index (TEI), LAF effect index (LEI) and the distance from gully to LAF (DL) were calculated to analyze the influence of anthropological factors on gully development. The results showed that the linear, areal and volumetric gully development rates (RL, RA and RV) showed great variabilities in different periods with the average of 5.69 m year−1, 137.37 m2 year−1 and 428.54 m3 year−1, respectively. ABSTRACTIncreased tourism forms subdivide the tourism market. Therefore, distinguishing spatiotemporal behaviors of different types of tourists is of great significance for tourism marketing and planning. In this study, we constructed a Spatial–Temporal-Preference model based on spatial clustering, seasonal-trend decomposition and statistical analysis, using multi-source data. It provides a novel frame for comparing tourist behavioral characteristics from a new perspective. Meanwhile, providing a method to rapidly identify the Tourism Infrastructure Supply and Demand Pattern (TISDP) fusing nighttime light and social media data. Then the framework was applied to analyze the differences between sightseeing tourists (STs) and cycling tourists (CTs) in Yunnan Province, China. The results showed clear spatial differences in location popularity and flow data with STs favoring northwestern Yunnan, and CTs favoring eastern Yunnan. Tourist behavior varied also seasonally and tourists preferred visiting minority areas or areas with better infrastructure. The tourism industry in the study area developed rapidly after 2013, although still with an unbalanced infrastructure supply and demand. The CTs loss areas were greater in northeastern and northwestern Yunnan and south of Kunming. The proposed methods help to identify differences in tourism activities and has important implications to tourism infrastructure planning and sustainable development.

Background: Healthy lifestyles are effective means to reduce major cardiovascular events. However, little is known about the association of healthy lifestyles with development of carotid atherosclerosis at the early stage of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Methods: We enrolled participants from Fujian province in the China PEACE MPP project. We calculated a healthy lifestyle score by adherence to non-smoking, sufficient physical activity, healthy diet and healthy body mass index. Cox proportional hazards regression models and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to explore the association between the healthy lifestyles and rapid progression of carotid plaque. Results: 8379 participants were included (mean age: 60.6 ± 8.3 years, 54.6 % female), with a median follow-up of 1.2 years (inter quartile range: 1.0–1.6). RCS showed a significant inverse association between the healthy lifestyle score and progression of carotid plaque. Participants with “intermediate” (HR: 0.72 [95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.65–0.80]) or “ideal” (HR: 0.68 [0.59–0.78]) adherence to healthy lifestyles had a lower risk of progression of carotid plaque compared to those with “poor” adherence. Age, sex, occupation, income, residence type and metabolic status were significant factors influencing the relationship. Farmers benefited more in non-smoking and sufficient physical activity compared to non-farmers, and participants with lower income or without dyslipidaemia benefited more in sufficient physical activity and healthy diet compared to their counterparts (p-for-interaction

Understanding the effects of short-term artificial revegetation on preventing soil degradation in erosion gullies of black soil areas is essential to choosing the most suitable species of vegetation for controlling the development of erosion gullies. A field experiment with short-term artificial revegetation with herbaceous species (Medicago sativa L., Glycyrrhiza pallidiflora Maxim., Elytrigia repens (L.) Desv. ex Nevski, Rheum palmatum L., Asparagus officinalis L., Trifolium repens L., Bromus inermis Leyss., Elymus dahuricus Turcz.) and a runoff scouring test were conducted in a typical erosion gully in a black soil area. Soil erosion, physicochemical characteristics, and shoot/root characteristics were measured to evaluate the effects of short-term artificial revegetation. Short-term artificial revegetation significantly decreased (p < 0.05) sediment yield by 91.1% ± 7.2% compared with that of bare soil. Soil total nitrogen (TN), total potassium (TP), available phosphorus (AP), cation exchange capacity (CEC), water-stable aggregates > 0.25 mm (WR0.25), and aggregate mean weight diameter (MWD) and mean geometric diameter (GWD) were significantly correlated with vegetated treatments, indicating they were factors sensitive to short-term artificial revegetation. Except for total potassium (TK), the other soil characteristics decreased in vegetated treatments. In addition to increasing TK, vegetated treatments also increased soil available nitrogen (AN)/TN ratios in the short term. The overall effects of different herbaceous species on soil and water conservation, soil quality, and vegetation growth were evaluated, and Trifolium repens L. is the most suitable for preventing soil degradation in an erosion gully. The results of this study will provide a reference for the restoration and protection of the ecological environment in black soil areas with gully erosion.

Ni/Ni3Al heterogeneous multilayer structures are widely used in aerospace manufacturing because of their unique coherent interfaces and excellent mechanical properties. Revealing the deformation mechanisms of interfacial structures is of great significance for microstructural design and their engineering applications. Thus, this work aims to establish the connection between the evolution of an interfacial misfit dislocation (IMD) network and tensile deformation mechanisms of Ni/Ni3Al multilayer structures. It is shown that the decomposition of IMD networks dominates the deformation of Ni/Ni3Al multilayer structures, which exhibits distinct effects on crystallographic orientation and layer thickness. Specifically, the Ni/Ni3Al (100) multilayer structure achieves its maximum yield strength of 5.28 GPa at the layer thickness of 3.19 nm. As a comparison, the (110) case has a maximum yield strength of 4.35 GPa as the layer thickness is 3.01 nm. However, the yield strength of the (111) one seems irrelevant to layer thickness, which fluctuates between 10.89 and 11.81 GPa. These findings can provide new insights into a deep understanding of the evolution and deformation of the IMD network of Ni/Ni3Al multilayer structures.

Gully erosion poses a significant global concern due to its role in land degradation and soil erosion, particularly pronounced in Northeast China’s diverse agro-geomorphic regions. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies on gully characteristics, development rates, and the topographic threshold of gully formation in these areas. To address this gap, we selected three different agro-geomorphic watersheds, named HL (Hailun), ML (Muling), and YKS (Yakeshi), with areas of 30.88 km2, 31.53 km2, and 21.98 km2, respectively. Utilizing high-resolution (2.1 m, 2 m) remote sensing imagery (ZY-3, GF-1), we analyzed morphological parameters (length, width, area, perimeter, etc.) and land use changes for all permanent gullies between 2013 and 2023. Approximately 30% of gullies were selected for detailed study of the upstream drainage area and gully head slopes to establish the topographic threshold for gully formation (S = a·A−b). In HL, ML, and YKS, average gully lengths were 526.22 m, 208.64 m, and 614.20 m, respectively, with corresponding widths of 13.28 m, 8.45 m, and 9.32 m. The gully number densities in the three areas were 3.14, 25.18, and 0.82/km2, respectively, with a gully density of 1.65, 5.25, and 0.50 km km−2, and 3%, 5%, and 1% of the land has disappeared due to gully erosion, respectively. YKS exhibited the highest gully head retreat rate at 17.50 m yr−1, significantly surpassing HL (12.24 m yr−1) and ML (7.11 m yr−1). Areal erosion rates were highest in HL (277.79 m2 yr−1) and lowest in YKS (105.22 m2 yr−1), with ML intermediate at 243.36 m2 yr−1. However, there was no significant difference in gully expansion rate (0.37–0.42 m yr−1) among the three areas (p > 0.05). Differences in gully development dynamics among the three regions were influenced by land use, slope, and topographic factors. The topographic threshold (S = a·A−b) for gully formation varied: HL emphasized drainage area (a = 0.052, b = 0.52), YKS highlighted soil resistance (a = 0.12, b = 0.36), and the parameters a and b of ML fell within the range between these of HL and YKS (a = 0.044, b = 0.27). This study has enriched the scope and database of global gully erosion research, providing a scientific basis for gully erosion prevention and control planning in Northeast China.

Abstact: Objective: To examine the joint association of healthy lifestyles and statin use with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in high-risk individuals, and evaluate the survival benefits by life expectancy. Methods: During 2015–2021, participants aged 35–75 years were recruited by the China Health Evaluation And risk Reduction through nationwide Teamwork. Based on number of healthy lifestyles related to smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity, and diet, we categorized them into: very healthy (3–4), healthy (2), and unhealthy (0–1). Statin use was determined by self-report taking statin in last two weeks. Results: Among the 265,209 included participants at high risk, 6979 deaths were observed, including 3236 CVD deaths during a median 3.6 years of follow-up. Individuals taking statin and with a very healthy lifestyle had the lowest risk of all-cause (HR: 0.70; 95 %CI: 0.57–0.87) and cardiovascular mortality (0.56; 0.40–0.79), compared with statin non-users with an unhealthy lifestyle. High-risk participants taking statin and with a very healthy lifestyle had the highest years of life gained (5.90 years at 35-year-old [4.14–7.67; P < 0.001]) compared with statin non-users with an unhealthy lifestyle among high-risk people. And their life expectancy was comparable with those without high risk but with a very healthy lifestyle (4.49 vs. 4.68 years). Conclusion: The combination of preventive medication and multiple healthy lifestyles was associated with lower risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and largest survival benefits. Integrated strategy to improve long-term health for high-risk people was urgently needed.

Microwave hotspots or thermal runaway is a long-standing challenge that severely limits the uniformity of microwave heating. In particular, the evolvement process and suppression methods of focused hotspots in high permittivity dimers are still not clear. In this work, thermal imaging was used to in situ track the microwave hotspots of grape dimers with different gaps and shapes in a multi-mode microwave oven. Two thermal characteristics of microwave resonance-induced focused hotspots, gap sensitivity and shape selectivity, were found. Finite element simulation verified the experimental results and calculated the influence of different conditions on the heating uniformity and the enhanced electric field. The results indicated that gap can gradually weaken the enhanced electric field between grapes and rapidly improve the heating uniformity by approximately 30 times. For dimers of different shapes in contact, the sharper the contact area, the more pronounced the focused hotspots. Moreover, the heating uniformity raises with increasing shape factor n, and when n = ∞, it is improved by about 35 times compared with n = 1. In addition, the enhanced electric field, which exhibits complexity due to microwave scattering interaction between grapes, was analyzed. These findings provide two strategies for improving the heating homogeneity of dimers or particle systems.

Abstract Influence maximization, whose aim is to maximise the expected number of influenced nodes by selecting a seed set of k influential nodes from a social network, has many applications such as goods advertising and rumour suppression. Among the existing influence maximization methods, the community‐based ones can achieve a good balance between effectiveness and efficiency. However, this kind of algorithm usually utilise the network community structures by viewing each node as a non‐overlapping node. In fact, many nodes in social networks are overlapping ones, which play more important role in influence spreading. To this end, an overlapping community‐based particle swarm optimization algorithm named OCPSO for influence maximization in social networks, which can make full use of overlapping nodes, non‐overlapping nodes, and their interactive information is proposed. Specifically, an overlapping community detection algorithm is used to obtain the information of overlapping community structures, based on which three novel evolutionary strategies, such as initialisation, mutation, and local search are designed in OCPSO for better finding influential nodes. Experimental results in terms of influence spread and running time on nine real‐world social networks demonstrate that the proposed OCPSO is competitive and promising comparing to several state‐of‐the‐arts (e.g. CGA, CMA‐IM, CIM, CDH‐SHRINK, CNCG, and CFIN).

Abstract Background Intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are widely distributed in proteins and related to many important biological functions. Accurately identifying IDRs is of great significance for protein structure and function analysis. Because the long disordered regions (LDRs) and short disordered regions (SDRs) share different characteristics, the existing predictors fail to achieve better and more stable performance on datasets with different ratios between LDRs and SDRs. There are two main reasons. First, the existing predictors construct network structures based on their own experiences such as convolutional neural network (CNN) which is used to extract the feature of neighboring residues in protein, and long short-term memory (LSTM) is used to extract the long-distance dependencies feature of protein residues. But these networks cannot capture the hidden feature associated with the length-dependent between residues. Second, many algorithms based on deep learning have been proposed but the complementarity of the existing predictors is not fully explored and used. Results In this study, the neural architecture search (NAS) algorithm was employed to automatically construct the network structures so as to capture the hidden features in protein sequences. In order to stably predict both the LDRs and SDRs, the model constructed by NAS was combined with length-dependent models for capturing the unique features of SDRs or LDRs and general models for capturing the common features between LDRs and SDRs. A new predictor called IDP-Fusion was proposed. Conclusions Experimental results showed that IDP-Fusion can achieve more stable performance than the other existing predictors on independent test sets with different ratios between SDRs and LDRs.

Abstract Background Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of mortality in childhood worldwide. However, a large number of children with CHD are not diagnosed promptly in low- and middle-income regions, due to limited healthcare resources and lack the ability of prenatal and postnatal ultrasound examinations. The research on asymptomatic CHD in the community is still blank, resulting in a large number of children with asymptomatic CHD can not be found and treated in time. Through the China-Cambodia collaborative health care initiative, the project team conducted research, screened children’s CHD through a sampling survey in China and Cambodia, collected relevant data, and retrospectively analyzed the data of all eligible patients. Objectives The project aimed to evaluate the prevalence of asymptomatic CHD in a sample population of 3-18years old and effects on their growth status and treatment outcomes. Methods We examined the prevalence of ‘asymptomatic CHD’ among 3-18years old children and adolescents at the township/county levels in the two participating. A total of eight provinces in China and five provinces in Cambodia were analyzed from 2017 to 2020. During 1 year follow-up after treatment, the differences in heights and weights of the treated and control groups were evaluated. Results Among the 3,068,075 participants screened from 2017 to 2020, 3967 patients with asymptomatic CHD requiring treatment were identified [0.130%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.126 -0.134%]. The prevalence rate of CHD ranged from 0.02 to 0.88%, and was negatively related to local per capita GDP (p = 0.028). The average height of 3310 treated CHD patients were 2.23% (95% CI: -2.51%~-1.9%) lower than that of the standard group and the average weight was − 6.41% (95% CI: -7.17%~-5.65%) lower, the developmental gap widening with advancing age. One year after treatment, the relative height difference remained comparable while that, in weight was reduced by 5.68% (95% CI: 4.27% ~7.09%). Conclusions Asymptomatic CHD now is often overlooked and is an emerging public health challenge. Early detection and treatment are essential to lower the potential burden of heart diseases in children and adolescents.

Abstract Computerized adaptive testing (CAT) targets to accurately assess the student’s proficiency in the required subject/area. The key issue is how to design a question selector that adaptively selects the best-suited questions for each student based on previous performance step by step. Most existing question selectors execute via greedy metric functions (e.g., question information and uncertainty), which can not effectively capture data characteristics. There also exist learning-based question selectors that redefine the CAT problem as a bilevel optimization problem, where the parameter learning of the question selector and the student proficiency estimation model are coupled, which is not flexible enough. To this end, in this paper, we propose a novel CAT framework with Decoupled Learning selector (DL-CAT). Specifically, we first use the currently estimated student ability and question characteristics as input and design a deep learning-based question selector to predict question selection scores. Then, to address the issue that there is no ground truth to measure the quality of the selected question, an approximate ground-truth and a pairwise rank loss function are specially designed to update the parameters of the question selector independently. Extensive experiments on two real datasets demonstrate that our proposed DL-CAT has certain advantages in effectiveness and significant advantages in efficiency.

Background Knowledge gaps remain in how gender‐related socioeconomic inequality affects sex disparities in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) prevention and outcome. Methods and Results Based on a nationwide population cohort, we enrolled 3 737 036 residents aged 35 to 75 years (2014–2021). Age‐standardized sex differences and the effect of gender‐related socioeconomic inequality (Gender Inequality Index) on sex disparities were explored in 9 CVD prevention indicators. Compared with men, women had seemingly better primary prevention (aspirin usage: relative risk [RR], 1.24 [95% CI, 1.18–1.31] and statin usage: RR, 1.48 [95% CI, 1.39–1.57]); however, women's status became insignificant or even worse when adjusted for metabolic factors. In secondary prevention, the sex disparities in usage of aspirin (RR, 0.65 [95% CI, 0.63–0.68]) and statin (RR, 0.63 [95% CI, 0.61–0.66]) were explicitly larger than disparities in usage of angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers (RR, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.84–0.91]) or β blockers (RR, 0.67 [95% CI, 0.63–0.71]). Nevertheless, women had better hypertension awareness (RR, 1.09 [95% CI, 1.09–1.10]), similar hypertension control (RR, 1.01 [95% CI, 1.00–1.02]), and lower CVD mortality (hazard ratio, 0.46 [95% CI, 0.45–0.47]). Heterogeneities of sex disparities existed across all subgroups. Significant correlations existed between regional Gender Inequality Index values and sex disparities in usage of angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers (Spearman correlation coefficient, r=−0.57, P=0.0013), hypertension control (r=−0.62, P=0.0007), and CVD mortality (r=0.45, P=0.014), which remained significant after adjusting for economic factors. Conclusions Notable sex disparities remain in CVD prevention and outcomes, with large subgroup heterogeneities. Gendered socioeconomic factors could reinforce such disparities. A sex‐specific perspective factoring in socioeconomic disadvantages could facilitate more targeted prevention policy making.

The optimal power flow problem in power systems is characterized by a number of complex objectives and constraints, which aim to optimize the total fuel cost, emissions, active power loss, voltage magnitude deviation, and other metrics simultaneously. These conflicting objectives and strict constraints challenge existing optimizers in balancing between active power and reactive power, along with good trade-offs among many metrics. To address these difficulties, this paper develops a co-evolutionary algorithm to solve the constrained many-objective optimization problem of optimal power flow, which evolves three populations with different selection strategies. These populations are evolved towards different parts of the huge objective space divided by large infeasible regions, and the cooperation between them renders assistance to the search for feasible and Pareto-optimal solutions. According to the experimental results on benchmark problems and the IEEE 30-bus, IEEE 57-bus, and IEEE 118-bus systems, the proposed algorithm is superior over peer algorithms in solving constrained many-objective optimization problems, especially the optimal power flow problems.

Mollisols contain high amounts of soil organic carbon (SOC), which is highly susceptible to climate change; thus, climate change could indirectly influence soil aggregate stability, but the dominant factor affecting aggregate stability remains controversial. Here, a soil transplanting test from high-latitude to low-latitude locations was initiated in 2004 to investigate the influences of warming-dominated climate change (approximately 3–4.7 ℃) on the quantity and molecular composition of OC fractions in surface (0–20 cm) soils, aggregate stability changes and underlying mechanisms. Different initial soil organic matter (SOM) contents of 50.6 g kg−1 (SOM5), 58.8 g kg−1 (SOM6), and 108.9 g kg−1 (SOM11) were established in situ soils and in transplanted soils to simulate warming. The 15-year warming-dominated climate change presented no noticeable change in the SOC content in the lower SOM Mollisols (SOM5 and SOM6) but increased the SOC content by 13.3% in the higher SOM Mollisol (SOM11). In terms of labile OC fractions, warming-dominated climate change significantly increased the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content by 20.1%–47.7% but reduced the easily oxidizable organic carbon (EOC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) contents by 22.1%–33.6%. Irrespective of any treatment, warming-dominated climate change decreased soil aggregate stability, as evidenced by the reduction in mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) of 41.7%–79.3% and an increase in fractal dimension (D) of 28.6%–58.5%. For hierarchically organized soil aggregates, warming-dominated climate change increased the proportion and OC content of particulate organic matter inside free microaggregates (Fm-POM) as well as nonaggregated silt + clay-sized organic matter (nA-MOM). However, climate change decreased the proportion and OC content of silt + clay-sized fractions inside microaggregates within macroaggregates (mM-MOM). Of importance, warming-dominated climate change increased the amount of carbohydrates and decreased the amount of lignin in the mM-MOM, Fm-POM, and nA-MOM fractions. Therefore, we speculated that chemical protection by mineral association within macroaggregates and nA-MOM fractions and physical protection by the occlusion of POM within free microaggregates might be the primary mechanisms for SOC stabilization under long-term climate change in Mollisols. The long-term warming-dominated climate change results demonstrated a positive effect on SOC content in higher SOM Mollisols, DOC, carbohydrate C, free microaggregate-associated C and nonaggregated silt + clay-sized associated C but exhibited a negative effect on EOC, MBC, lignin C, silt + clay-sized inside microaggregates within macroaggregates C and aggregate stability. These variables all contributed to the reduction in soil aggregate stability and might act as sensitive indicators of warming-dominated climate change in Mollisols, which in turn affect farmland ecosystem C fluxes in response to further climate change.

Crop removal of cations and anions is one of the main factors causing soil acidification. Mollisols, also known as black soils, which are inherently neutral soils, have been acidified due to irrational land use. However, the magnitude of acidification of black soils in relation to crop removal under crop rotation and field management remains unclear. In this study, we collect soil samples from 9- and 10-year long-term trials with seven treatments of soybean and corn monoculture, and corn–soybean rotation under different fertilization or straw return in the Mollisol region of Northeast China. Total removal of cations and anions is 371–508 and 92–125 kg ha−1 in corn but 166–250 and 56–82 kg ha−1 in soybean, which leads to the production of 7.06–10.2 kmol ha−1 H+ for corn and 4.43–5.77 kmol ha−1 H+ for soybean. Among the four cations (K+, Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+) analyzed in different tissues of crops, K+ contributes more to the total H+ production, where K+ in corn stem contributes more than 55% H+, while K+ in soybean seed contributes more than 64% H+. The sum of Ca2+ and Mg2+ removal for soybean is 37.6–66.9 kg ha−1, 1.26–2.07 times (p < 0.05) greater than for corn. Net H+ produced by corn and soybean removal may potentially lead to a soil acidification of 0.053–0.074 and 0.032–0.045 year−1 units pH, respectively. The greater the corn or soybean biomass, the higher the net H+ production. Continuous soybean and combination of chemical fertilizer for corn but no chemical fertilizer for soybean reduce the soil pH buffering capacity (pHBC), while other treatments increase the soil pHBC, but there is no effect for continuous corn. Compared to normal corn–soybean rotation, soil pH in 9-year continuous corn declines from 5.76 to 5.63, while 10-year continuous soybean declines from 5.68 to 5.43 (p < 0.05). However, soil pH with chemical fertilizer for corn and dairy manure for soybean increases by 0.60 and 0.89 units (p < 0.05). Changes in pH might not be fully related to crop ion removal. Manure application with crop rotation is an effective approach to alleviate soil acidification.

The vacuum preloading method effectively strengthens soft soil foundations with vertical drainage, which produces a smear effect when laying sand drains. Meanwhile, the seepage of pore water and soil deformation during consolidation exhibit nonlinear characteristics. Therefore, based on Gibson’s 1D large-strain consolidation theory, this paper developed a more generalized large-strain radical consolidation model of sand-drained soft foundations under free-strain assumptions. In this system, the double logarithmic compression permeability relationships for soft soils with large-strain properties, the variation in the radical permeability coefficient in the smear zone, and the effect of the non-Darcy flow were all included. Then, the partial differential control equations were numerically solved by the finite difference method and validated with existing radical consolidation test results and derived analytical solutions. Finally, the influences of relevant model parameters on consolidation are discussed. The analysis shows that the greater the maximum dimensionless vacuum negative pressure P0, the faster the consolidation rate of sand-drained foundations. Meanwhile, the decrease in the negative pressure transfer coefficient k1 will result in a decreasing final settlement amount. Moreover, the consolidation rate of sand-drained foundations is slower considering the non-Darcy flow, but the final settlement is unaffected.

Abstract Background Healthy lifestyle behaviours are effective means to reduce the burden of diseases. This study was aimed to fill the knowledge gaps on the distribution, associated factors, and potential health benefits on mortality of four healthy lifestyle behaviours in China. Methods During 2015–2019, participants aged 35–75 years from 31 provinces were recruited by the China PEACE Million Persons Project. Four healthy lifestyle behaviours were investigated in our study, including non-smoking, none or moderate alcohol use, sufficient leisure time physical activity (LTPA), and healthy diet. Results Among 903,499 participants, 74.1% were non-smokers, 96.0% had none or moderate alcohol use, 23.6% had sufficient LTPA, 11.1% had healthy diet, and only 2.8% had all the four healthy lifestyle behaviours. Abstract Sparse large-scale multi-objective optimization problems (LSMOPs) widely exist in real-world applications, which have the properties of involving a large number of decision variables and sparse Pareto optimal solutions, i.e., most decision variables of these solutions are zero. In recent years, sparse LSMOPs have attracted increasing attentions in the evolutionary computation community. However, all the recently tailored algorithms for sparse LSMOPs put the sparsity detection and maintenance in the first place, where the nonzero variables can hardly be optimized sufficiently within a limited budget of function evaluations. To address this issue, this paper proposes to enhance the connection between real variables and binary variables within the two-layer encoding scheme with the assistance of variable grouping techniques. In this way, more efforts can be devoted to the real part of nonzero variables, achieving the balance between sparsity maintenance and variable optimization. According to the experimental results on eight benchmark problems and three real-world applications, the proposed algorithm is superior over existing state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms for sparse LSMOPs.

Wind erosion is a serious problem in agricultural regions and threatens the regional food production in Northeast China. However, limited information is available on the characteristics of wind erosion in arable soil in Northeast China. As a result, field-based research during periods of vulnerability to wind erosion is essential. This study quantified the characteristics of soil wind erosion under no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) treatments in China’s northern “corn-belt.” The results determined the wind erosion transport mode of Mollisols to be generally characterized by creep and supplemented by saltation and suspension in Northeast China. The erodible particles of the creep accounted for 80.37% and 85.42% of the total wind erosion under the NT and CT treatments, respectively. During experiments with erodible particles in the saltation mode from the soil surface to 2 m, the majority of the particles were collected by the sampler at 0.5 m height, with the NT and CT treatments collecting 5.82 kg·m−2 and 6.93 kg·m−2 of erodible particles per unit area, respectively. Wind erosion on agricultural land was observed to be influenced by tillage practices, rainfall, wind speed, and soil moisture content. Average and maximum wind speeds exhibited significant positive correlations with wind erosion during April and May. Moreover, the erodible particles of each wind erosion transport mode (creep, saltation, and suspension) under CT were higher (1.73, 1.41, and 1.35 times) than those under the NT treatment. With less damage and greater protection of the surface soil, the NT treatment was able to decrease the occurrence of wind erosion and influence its outcome on farmland. Therefore, NT treatment should be encouraged as a key initiative for the reduction of wind erosion of arable soil in the Chinese Mollisol region.

Abstract Lithium dendrites cause battery failures and safety hazards in liquid‐electrolyte lithium‐based batteries. To address this problem, each component of the battery, such as cathode, anode, electrolyte and separator, should be well matched and engineered for the integrated battery system. The separator plays an increasingly important role owing to its gradual transformation from an inert to an active component in the battery, especially for resolving Li dendrite issues in Li‐metal batteries. Armed with advanced nanotechnology solutions, separator engineering presents a formidable strategy to suppress dendrite growth dynamics by modifying the electrolyte chemistry, regulating/trapping unwanted ionic species and redirecting dendrite growth direction. This review summarizes recent advances in separator engineering for effective dendrite suppression of Li‐metal anodes. We first introduce the challenges that the Li‐metal anode faces and the irreplaceable role of separators in the battery system. The characterization parameters and design principles of separators are also discussed. Then, the mainstream techniques for separator functionalization and their impacts on dendrite suppression are scrutinized and highlighted. Lastly, the conclusion is drawn and the future outlook for separator engineering is presented.

Ultrasonic brazing of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (Zr-BMG) and 1060-Al alloy dissimilar was realized by using a Zn-3Al filler metal. A firm metallurgical bonding was obtained at the dissimilar joint interfaces. In the initial stage, a single-phased Zn50Al25Zr25 IMC layer was found on the Zr-BMG surface. Prolonging the brazing time, the excessive growth of the Zn50Al25Zr25 IMC layer inhibited the diffusion of Al from brazing seam to the reaction front, which induced the composition fluctuation of Al and thus the formation of Zn50Al25Zr25/Zn-rich phase composite layers on the Zr-BMG surface. The shear strength of joints was affected by the interfacial reaction phase, and the highest value obtained was 68 MPa.

Superconducting flywheels have potential application value in aerospace field, and its suspension time is a key factor. Alternating Current (AC) loss associated with rotation is an important parameter that affects the suspension time, so it is very important to study how to reduce the AC loss. Recently, a method of preparing YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) high-temperature superconducting flywheels by Direct-Ink-Writing (DIW) 3D printing was developed. In this paper, the circular hole superconducting flywheel prepared by this method is optimized by the idea of structural optimization. Based on the finite element method, the AC loss before and after optimization is calculated and analyzed. It is found that the elliptical holes make the superconducting flywheel have lower AC loss than circular holes, with a reduction of 58.49%. Then, the YBCO superconducting flywheel with an optimized elliptical structure was prepared by the DIW 3D printing method. The magnetic levitation experiment found that the levitation time of the optimized superconducting flywheel was increased to 162 s compared with the previous 120 s under the same conditions, and the optimized structure had a higher levitation mass ratio. It provides theoretical and experimental support for reducing the AC loss of superconductors by applying the idea of structural optimization design in engineering practice.

Aromatic aldehydes are important industrial raw materials mainly synthesized by anti-Markovnikov (AM) oxidation of corresponding aromatic olefins. The AM product selectivity remains a big challenge. P450 aMOx is the first reported enzyme that could catalyze AM oxidation of aromatic olefins. Here, we reported a rational design strategy based on the “butterfly” model of the active site of P450 aMOx. Constrained molecular dynamic simulations and a binding energy analysis of key residuals combined with an experimental alanine scan were applied. As a result, the mutant A275G showed high AM selectivity of >99%. The results also proved that the “butterfly” model is an effective design strategy for enzymes.

Background: Physical activity (PA) is an important component of secondary prevention after myocardial infarction (MI). The mortality risk of MI survivors varies at different post-MI periods, yet the time-varying effect of total PA is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between different volumes and patterns of total PA and mortality at different post-MI periods. Methods: Using data from the China Patient-centered Evaluative Assessment of Cardiac Events Million Persons Project, we divided the screened MI survivors into within-1-year and beyond-1-year groups based on the duration between their baseline interview and MI onset. Total PA was divided into insufficient (4500 MET minutes/week) volumes; leisure (≥50%) and non-leisure (>50%) patterns. Data on mortality were derived from the National Mortality Surveillance System and Vital Registration of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Cox proportional hazard models were fitted to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Restricted cubic spline regression analyses were performed to examine the dose-response association between PA and mortality. Results: During the follow-up (median 3.7 years) of the 20,653 post-MI patients, 751 patients died. In the within-1-year group, moderate (HR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.40 to 0.88) and high (0.63, 0.45 to 0.88) volumes and both patterns (leisure: 0.52, 0.29 to 0.94; non-leisure: 0.64, 0.46 to 0.88) of PA were all associated with significantly lower risk of mortality, compared with insufficient PA. In the beyond-1-year group, the association was observed in high volume (0.69, 0.56 to 0.86) and both patterns (leisure: 0.64, 0.48 to 0.87; non-leisure: 0.79, 0.65 to 0.97). Soil structure and its change are good indicators for soil quality and environmental stability, and land-use change is known to be an important factor that affects soil structure. We investigated the seasonal and temporal variability in the soil structure and evaluated soil erodibility under different land-use and land-management practices in the Mollisols region of Northeast China. We considered five land-use and land-management modes in the sloping land (5°), i.e., bare land (BL), natural vegetation restoration (NVR), artificial forest (AF), no-tillage (NT), and conventional tillage (CT). The bulk density (BD), aggregate size distribution, and aggregate stability (AS) were determined for each mode. Meanwhile, we estimated the runoff depth (RD) and sediment yield (SY) to assess the soil erodibility. The lowest BD in CT occurred in May, but no seasonal change in BD was observed in other treatments. After 15 years, the NVR and CT had increased BD values, while the BD of NT declined significantly over time. The >2 mm size fractions and the AS of NVR, NT, and CT were the largest in August, while those of BL decreased during the growing season. Furthermore, the >2 mm size fractions and the AS of BL, NT, and CT decreased over the long-term study period, but NVR and AF exhibited no significant inter-annual changes in the AS. The BD and AS in NVR and AF were greater than those in BL. After 15 years, the BD of NT and CT were not significantly different, but NT had a greater AS. The AS was greater in the subsurface soil than in the topsoil of NT and CT. Moreover, the NVR and NT had significantly reduced RD and SY compared with BL and CT. These results provide a scientific basis for choosing sustainable agriculture and land development modes to control soil erosion in Northeast China.

As a meta-heuristic algorithm that simulates the intelligence of gray wolves, grey wolf optimizer (GWO) has a wide range of applications in practical problems. As a kind of local search, chaotic local search (CLS) has a strong ability to get rid of the local optimum due to its integration of chaotic maps. To enhance GWO, CLS is always incorporated into GWO to increase its population diversity and accelerate algorithm’s convergence. However, it is still unclear that how may chaotic maps should be used in CLS and how to embed them into GWO. To address these challenging issues, this paper studies both single and multiple chaotic maps incorporated GWOs. Extensive comparative experiments are conducted based on IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) benchmark test suit. The results show that CLS incorporated GWOs generally perform better than the original GWO, suggesting the effectiveness of such hybridization. Moreover, a remarkable finding of this work is that the piecewise linear chaotic map (PWLCM) and Gaussian map have the most potential to improve the search performance of GWO. Additionally, CLS incorporated GWOs also perform significantly better than some other state-of-the-art meta-heuristic algorithms. This study not only gives more insights into the mechanism of how CLS makes influence on GWO, but also finds that the most suitable choice of chaotic map for it.

Plasma spraying is an energy intensive manufacturing process to provide function coatings. As such, energy consumption analysis always is promising for the development of green plasma spraying. In this study, a systematic energy consumption model of plasma spraying was presented considering various working states and processing parameters with unit process life cycle inventory method. Verification showed that energy consumption could be accurately calculated with this model within 5% errors. In light of this model, an L9 Taguchi test was carried out to investigate the relationship between energy consumption and coating quality (i.e., coating thickness, hardness, and porosity) with different processing factors (i.e., power, powder feeding rate, spraying jet velocity, and scanning step). It was indicated that power was the most influential factors for the energy consumption and the following factors were scanning step and spraying jet velocity. Besides, Energy analysis showed that the coating thickness and hardness are closely related to the unit energy consumption with a linear and quadratic function respectively. This work provides a basic guidance for quantifying energy consumption and could be extended for the sustainable development of plasma spraying.

BackgroundLipid-lowering therapy (LLT) is one of the key strategies for reducing the atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) burden. However, little is known about the percentage of people in need of different LLT regimens to achieve optimal targets of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and the corresponding cost and benefit.MethodsWe conducted a simulation study based on the data from the nationwide China PEACE MPP population cohort (2015–2020), from which we included 2,904,914 participants aged 35–75 years from all the 31 provinces in mainland China. Participants were grouped based on their 10-year ASCVD risks, then entered into a Monte Carlo model which was used to perform LLT intensification simulation scenarios to achieve corresponding LDL-C goals in each risk stratification.ResultsAfter standardizing age and sex, the proportions of participants included at low, moderate, high, and very-high risk were 70.8%, 15.6%, 11.5%, and 2.1%, respectively. People who failed to achieve the corresponding LDL-C goals −8.1% at low risk, 19.6% at moderate risk, 53.2% at high risk, and 93.6% at very-high risk (either not achieving the goal or not receiving LLT)—would be in need of the LLT intensification simulation. After the use of atorvastatin 20 mg was simulated, over 99% of the population at low or moderate risk could achieve the LDL-C goals; while 11.3% at high and 24.5% at very-high risk would still require additional non-statin therapy. After the additional use of ezetimibe, there were still 4.8% at high risk and 11.3% at very-high risk in need of evolocumab; and 99% of these two groups could achieve the LDL-C goals after the use of evolocumab. Such LLT intensification with statin, ezetimibe, and evolocumab would annually cost $2.4 billion, $4.2 billion, and $24.5 billion, respectively, and prevent 264,170, 18,390, and 17,045 cardiovascular events, respectively.ConclusionsModerate-intensity statin therapy is pivotal for the attainment of optimal LDL-C goals in China, and around 10–25% of high- or very-high-risk patients would require additional non-statin agents. There is an opportunity to reduce the rising ASCVD burden in China by optimizing LLT.

ObjectivesWe aimed to assess the dose–response association between weight gain from young to middle adulthood and odds of metabolic syndrome, across body mass index (BMI) categories at young adulthood.MethodsBased on a national population-based screening project, middle-aged (35–64 years) participants who recalled weight at age 25 years and received standardized measurements were included. Multivariable adjusted restricted cubic splines and logistic regression models were applied.ResultsIn total, 437,849 participants were included (62.1% women, 52.0 ± 7.6 years). Larger weight gains from young to middle adulthood were associated with higher odds of metabolic syndrome at middle adulthood, with odds of 2.01 (1.98–2.05), 1.93 (1.92–1.94), and 1.67 (1.64–1.7) per 5-kg weight gain across participants who were underweight, normal-weight, and overweight/obese at young adulthood, respectively. After further adjusting for current BMI, larger weight gains still correlated with higher odds of metabolic syndrome among underweight and normal-weight participants, while an inverted U-shaped association was observed in overweight/obese participants.ConclusionsWeight maintenance from young to middle adulthood could be effective to mitigate metabolic syndrome burden, especially among underweight and normal-weight people. Historical weight gain confers varied information about metabolic syndrome risk independent of attained BMI across BMI categories at young adulthood.

Mollisols include an abundance of soil organic carbon (SOC) which is easily influenced by fertilization management. Manure addition could enhance soil aggregate stability; however, the dominating factor affecting its stabilization remains controversial. The fertilization practices were initiated in 2012 to investigate the influences of different fertilization managements on the contents and molecular characterization of organic carbon (OC) fractions, and to clarify the underlying mechanism of soil aggregate stability change. NoF (non-fertilizer), CF (only chemical fertilizer), CF + DM (chemical fertilizer plus single dairy manure at 15 t ha−1), and CF + 2DM (chemical fertilizer plus double dairy manure at 30 t ha−1) treatments were established. This research was aimed at exploring the potential mechanism that affects aggregate stability in Mollisols through the variation of contents and chemical composition of OC fractions, and screening out the appropriate fertilization practice on promoting SOC stabilization and crop yield under 7-year manure addition. Compared to CF, 7-year manure addition significantly enhanced SOC content by 17.4–35.9% at 0–10 cm depth, which was evidenced from the contribution of increased aromatic compounds with 4.3–19.9%. Simultaneously, compared with CF, CF + DM and CF + 2DM both significantly enhanced dissolved organic carbon and easily oxidizable organic carbon contents by 12.5–37.7% at a 0–30 cm soil layer. In regard to soil aggregates, the increased OC content and mass percentage of macroaggregates, and the decreased mass percentage of free microaggregates both improved aggregate stability under manure addition at 0-30 cm soil layer, which was proven to be the increment in mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) values by 17.6–22.1%. Moreover, CF + DM and CF + 2DM raised aromatic compound amounts of POM fractions within macroaggregates [M(c)POM] by 5.6–11.6% and within free microaggregates (Fm-POM) by 4.3–10%. Furthermore, CF + DM and CF + 2DM both significantly increased maize yield by 5.7% and 4.2% compared to CF, but no significant difference was observed between CF + DM and CF + 2DM treatments. Collectively, physical protection through the occlusion within aggregates of POM might be the central mechanism for soil aggregate stability of manure addition in Mollisols. The manure addition of 15 t ha−1 was the effective management method to enhance SOC stabilization and crop yield in Mollisols.

Predicting network dynamics based on data, a problem with broad applications, has been studied extensively in the past, but most existing approaches assume that the complete set of historical data from the whole network is available. This requirement presents a great challenge in applications, especially for large, distributed networks in the real world, where data collection is accomplished by many clients in a parallel fashion. Often, each client only has the time series data from a partial set of nodes, and the client has access to only partial time stamps of the whole set of time series data and the partial structure of the network. Due to privacy concerns or license-related issues, the data collected by different clients cannot be shared. Accurately predicting the network dynamics while protecting the privacy of different parties is a critical problem in modern times. Here, we propose a solution based on federated graph neural networks (FGNNs) that enables the training of a global dynamic model for all parties without data sharing. We validate the working of our FGNN framework through two types of simulations to predict a variety of network dynamics (four discrete and three continuous dynamics). As a significant real-world application, we demonstrate successful prediction of state-wise influenza spreading in the USA. Our FGNN scheme represents a general framework to predict diverse network dynamics through collaborative fusing of the data from different parties without disclosing their privacy.

ABSTRACT: For the application of second generation high temperature superconducting coated conductors (CCs) with layered structures, thermal mismatch between different components and electromagnetic force exerted in superconducting layer in a working magnet can cause transverse tensile stress, which would result in delamination behavior. Therefore many research groups have designed experiments to measure the delamination strength and dedicate to improving that. However, the reason of the discrete distribution of measured data has still not get quantitatively studied, besides, there are lack of investigations on the method of changing depositing conditions to improve the delamination strength except by adding an additional metal layer. In this work, we adopt an anvil test device and obtain delamination strengths as 29.6 MPa of YBa2Cu3O7–x (YBCO)/buffer and 114.6 MPa of buffer/substrate by combing energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS) detection. The reason of discretized measurement data on the delamination strength is explained. Moreover, we find that different temperatures during Ag deposition determine the bonding force of Ag and YBCO layer. The Delamination strength between Ag and YBCO layer increases from 4.4 MPa to larger than 114.6 MPa with temperature elevated from 30 °C to 100 °C. Hence we present a novel method for improving the delamination strength of YBCO CCs by setting an optimal temperature of Ag deposition. High-speed measurements, particularly close to the velocity of light, have always been a great challenge in the field of experimental measurement. Although traditional high-speed measurement methods based on imaging technology can achieve millions of frames per second, they face the problem that the field of view decreases with an increase in the frame rate, which is difficult to overcome in a short period. In this study, a closed multi-exposure optical path is designed first based on a 600 ps pulse laser that realizes the continuous measurement of sub-light velocity and is not subject to the field of view. The path can also be adjusted with respect to time, accurate up to sub-nanoseconds. Second, it is found that the accuracy and resolution of the present method are related to the used pulse laser and camera. Once the performances of the pulse laser and the camera are improved, the corresponding range of measurement of the velocity can be improved further. Compared with traditional pumping technologies, the proposed technology achieves continuous velocity measurement with the utilization rate of laser energy as high as 100%. Finally, we use this novel optical system to determine the flux avalanche velocity of the YBa2Cu3O7-x superconducting thin film, and a highest speed of 323.5 Km/s is obtained.

Tillage has been reported to induce seasonal changes of organic carbon (Cmicro) and nitrogen (Nmicro) in the biomass of microorganisms. Soil microorganisms execute such ecosystem functions as it is an immediate sink of labile biophil elements; it is an agent of a conversion, catalysis and synthesis of humus substances; it transforms soil contaminants into nonhazardous wastes and it participates in soil aggregation and pedogenesis as a whole. However, the seasonal turnover of microorganisms on arable lands in temperate ecosystems has not been studied at a relevant level. Hence, we are aimed at studying the dynamics of such soil microbial biomass patterns as Cmicro, Nmicro, microbial index (MI = (Cmicro/CTOC)·100%) and CO2-C emissions against the background of 9 years of tillage and 22 years of abandoned (Ab) and fallow (F) usage. Our study was conducted on a long-term experimental site on a Mollisol in Northeast China. The maximum Cmicro and Nmicro contents were recorded at the beginning of the growing season at the 0–10-cm layer and mid-July at the 20–40-cm layer, while the minimum content was during August–October. The Cmicro content ranged from 577.79 to 381.79 mg−1 kg−1 using Ab in the spring to 229.53 to 272.86 mg−1 kg−1 in the autumn using CT (conventional tillage) and F in the 0–10- and 10–20-cm layers, respectively. The amplitude of Nmicro content changes were several times lower as compared with the Cmicro. The smallest quartile range (IQR0.25–0.75) of such changes was shown when using the following treatments: no till (NT) and Ab in the 0–10-, NT and F in the 10–20- and CT in the 20–40-cm layer. The widest Cmicro:Nmicro ratio was recorded at F and CT in the 0–20- and CT and rotational tillage (Rot) in the 20–40-cm layer. The MI dynamics were similar to the trends of Cmicro and Nmicro and changed from 0.72 ± 0.168 to 2.00 ± 0.030%. The highest share of Cmicro in CTOC was at Ab (1.82 ± 1.85%) and NT (1.66 ± 1.52 %) in the 0–10-, Ab (1.23 ± 1.27%) and NT (1.29 ± 1.32%) in the 10–20- and Ab (1.19 ± 1.09%) and F (1.11 ± 1.077%) in the 20–40-cm layer, correspondingly. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient between Cmicro and CTOC increased from the upper 0–10- to the lower 20–40-cm layer; it was “strong” and “high” between Cmicro and CTOC. Different uses of Mollisol affected the amplitude of the Cmicro and Nmicro seasonal changes, but it did not change their trend. Our results suggest the key role of Ab and NT technologies in Cmicro accumulation in the total organic carbon (TOC).

Soil water and temperature are important factors to reflect variations in soil heat and water flows especially for tillage systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the CoupModel in predicting the effect of tillage practices on soil water and heat processes for conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) systems with straw mulching on semi-arid and high-latitude Mollisols of northeast China. This model was calibrated and evaluated in a three-year tillage experiment from 2009 to 2011 in a field experiment station, using field measurements of daily soil temperature and water storage in profiles for CT and NT separately. The results showed that under the model, soil temperatures were well simulated at 0–90 cm soil depths for CT, as indicated by R2 ≥ 0.97, the nRMSE = 27.5–38.7% and −1.02 °C ≤ ME ≤ −0.31 °C, and soil water storage at 0–130 cm soil depth (R2 = 0.01–0.06, the nRMSE = 19.6–37.1%, 13.3 mm ≤ ME ≤ 28.2 mm) was simulated with more uncertainty. “Moderate to good agreements” were achieved for NT. In general, the temporal and spatial variations of soil temperature and water for NT were well simulated by CoupModel. Although NT decreased soil evaporation—thus improving soil water content, especially in the root zone soil—and lowered the soil frozen depths, it reduced the soil temperatures, which could influence crop growth. It was concluded that the CoupModel proved to be a functional tool to predict soil heat and water processes for CT and NT systems in high-latitude seasonal frost conditions of Mollisols in China to estimate the soil temperature, water, energy balance, and frost depth dynamics in relatively complex systems that combined plant dynamics with tillage and/or no tillage covered with straw mulching in the soil surface.

Fertilization practices change soil organic carbon content and distribution, which is relevant to crop rotation and soil aggregates. However, how fertilization management under corn–soybean rotation affects soil organic carbon and aggregate stability at different soil depths in Mollisols is unclear. The effects of 6–yr fertilization under corn–soybean rotation on aggregate stability, soil organic carbon content and storage, and size distribution in soil aggregates were investigated. Five different fertilization practices were carried out in 2013: corn and soybean without fertilizer; corn with chemical fertilizer, soybean without fertilizer; corn with chemical fertilizer, soybean without fertilizer, returning the corn and soybean residues; corn and soybean with chemical fertilizer; and corn with chemical fertilizer, soybean with farmyard manure. Compared with corn and soybean without fertilizer, returning the corn and soybean residues increased bulk SOC content, and enhanced mean weight diameter and geometric mean diameter values at 0–10 cm because of increased water–stable aggregates (WSA) larger than 2 mm proportion and decreased WSA proportion. Simultaneously, corn with chemical fertilizer and soybean with farmyard manure increased bulk soil organic carbon content but reduced mean weight diameter and geometric mean diameter values at 0–20 cm due to increased WSA proportion and decreased WSA>2mm proportion. Altogether, the application of consecutive returning crop residues and chemical fertilizer in alternate years is the most favorable approach for soil organic carbon accumulation and aggregate stability at 0–10 cm under corn–soybean rotation in Mollisols.

Background: The application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in disaster relief is increasingly widespread, but it is still unclear whether ICT can reduce casualties and economic losses in disaster response phase. Methods: We searched studies in the databases of Scopus, EI, MEDLINE and EMBASE from Jan 1, 1990, to Mar 22, 2019. Excel 2016 and VOSviewer (version 1.6.11) were used to analyze the extracted data and visualize the network diagram. Results: We included 169 eligible articles. The number of ICTs-related disaster-relief articles published annually shows an overall trend of growth since 1990. The United States has the greatest influence in this field. The 169 articles reported twenty-four technologies and the top three reported most frequently were remote sensing, social media, and geographic information system (GIS). The main roles of ICTs in natural disaster rescue included information dissemination, post-disaster image collection and damage assessment. However, of the 169 articles, only five reported that ICTs reduced casualties or economic losses in disaster response phase, two concluded that rescue robot was ineffective in mudslide rescue, and the remaining 162 (95.86%) did not evaluate the effect of ICTs on the rescue. Conclusion: ICTs have the potential to reduce casualties and economic losses, but some technologies are not applicable to all rescue scenarios. In addition, most studies did not pay attention to the effect of technology on the rescue.

AC loss is often considered one of the most important design parameters that guide the fabrication of superconducting devices. Thus, the electrometric method to determine AC loss of superconductors is crucial. Usually, the obtained voltage contains the resistive part and the inductive part. If the induced voltage is large, it will make the result very sensitive to the phase error, and hence, a compensating method is usually adopted. However, phase determination was still needed in the previous studies. In this work, we present an approach to precisely eliminate the unknown induced voltage of the sample just by alternating the inductance of the compensating coil. By determining the minimum of the sample voltage, where the induced voltage of the sample is precisely compensated, the AC loss is then able to be calculated without phase control. The principle of the presented method is strictly certified with the mathematic derivation, along with experimental proof. Current and frequency dependent inductance and loss resistance are obtained naturally. The result reveals that the ratio of induced voltage to resistive voltage decreases exponentially with an increase in current. We also found that the resistance of the CC is determined by both applied currents and frequencies. To universally describe these relations, the cycle resistance r is defined by an exponential function, allowing calculating AC loss with different frequencies just through the data of one frequency, which greatly facilitates the testing process. This method is also expected to be utilized in AC loss measurements for superconducting cables and coils.

Superconducting YBa _2 Cu _3 O _7− _x (YBCO) bulks have promising applications in quasi-permanent magnets, levitation, etc. Recently, a new way of fabricating porous YBCO bulks, named direct-ink-writing (DIW) 3D-printing method, has been reported. In this method, the customized precursor paste and programmable shape are two main advantages. Here, we have put forward a new way to customize the YBCO 3D-printing precursor paste which is doped with Al _2 O _3 nanoparticles to obtain YBCO with higher thermal conductivity. The great rheological properties of precursor paste after being doped with Al _2 O _3 nanoparticles can help the macroscopic YBCO samples with high thermal conductivity fabricated stably with high crystalline and lightweight properties. Test results show that the peak thermal conductivity of Al _2 O _3 -doped YBCO can reach twice as much as pure YBCO, which makes a great effort to reduce the quench propagation speed. Based on the microstructure analysis, one can find that the thermal conductivity of Al _2 O _3 -doped YBCO has been determined by its components and microstructures. In addition, a macroscopic theoretical model has been proposed to assess the thermal conductivity of different microstructures, whose calculated results take good agreement with the experimental results. Meanwhile, a microstructure with high thermal conductivity has been found. Finally, a macroscopic YBCO bulk with the presented high thermal conductivity microstructure has been fabricated by the Al _2 O _3 -doped method. Compared with YBCO fabricated by the traditional 3D-printed, the Al _2 O _3 -doped structural YBCO bulks present excellent heat transfer performances. Our customized design of 3D-printing precursor pastes and novel concept of structural design for enhancing the thermal conductivity of YBCO superconducting material can be widely used in other DIW 3D-printing materials.

Previous studies have proved that root distribution along gully headwalls greatly alters soil properties and further affects the soil erodibility of gully heads. However, it is not clear whether the gully headcut migration is affected by root distribution and soil properties. Five representative gullies developed in different land uses were selected to clarify the variations of root distribution and soil properties and their effects on headcut migration in the rainy season (May to October 2021) in the Mollisols region of northeast China. Results showed that the 68.4%–93.3% of root mass density and 65.6–88.5% of root length density were concentrated in 0–30 cm soil layer of gully heads, and the roots of 85%. The gullies developed in farmlands had relatively higher soil compactness, shear strength and aggregate stability, but lower organic matter (OMC), disintegration capacity and soil permeability than those developed in woodlands, unpaved roads in farmland and stable gully-beds. Changes in soil properties of gully heads were closely related to root density. The linear, areal, and volumetric migration rate of gully heads varied greatly and were 1.07–35.11 m yr−1, 28.95–562.46 m2 yr−1 and 56.82–6626.37 m3 yr−1, respectively, with the average of 9.07 m yr−1, 156.92 m2 yr−1 and 1503.02 m3 yr−1, respectively. The change in headcut migration rate was significantly affected by root density, soil properties and drainage area, of which soil texture, OMC, soil aggregate structure, and the drainage area were the critical factors influencing headcut migration in the Mollisols region of northeast China.

ABSTRACT: Twist structures have diverse applications, ranging from dragline, electrical cable, and intelligent structure. Among these applications, tension deformation can't be avoided during the fabrication and working processes, which often leads to the twist structure rotation (called untwisting effect) and twist pitch increasing. As a consequence, this untwisting behavior has a large effect on the effective Young's modulus. In this paper, we present an improved model based on the classical Costello's theory to predict the effective Young's modulus of the basic structure, twisted by three same copper strands under cyclic loading. Series of experiments were carried out to verify the present model taking into account the untwisting effect. Tillage practices are critical for sustaining soil quality necessary for successful crop growth and productivity, but there are only few studies for strip tillage (ST) in the Mollisols region of Northeast China at present. A long-term (≥10-year) study was carried out to investigate the influence of within the tilled row (IR) and between rows (BR) in ST (10-year), conventional tillage (CT, 14-year) and no tillage (NT, 14-year) treatments on soil physicochemical properties. Soil samples were taken in May of 2019 at 0–5, 5–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm depths and used to analyze bulk density (BD), soil aggregate distribution and stability, and soil organic carbon (SOC). Meanwhile, our study also explored the differences in seed emergence, soil moisture, and temperature during the seed emergence period, and yield of maize (Zea mays L.) among the different treatments. Similar soil properties were observed between ST-BR and NT, which showed they had a significantly greater BD, >0.25 mm water stable aggregate content (WR0.25) (especially in the amount of >2 mm and 1–2 mm size proportion), aggregate stability, and SOC than ST-IR and CT-IR at a depth of 0–20 cm. By improving soil conditions of seedbed, ST-IR and CT-IR increased soil temperature above NT by 1.64 °C and 1.80 °C, respectively, and ST-IR had a slight greater soil moisture than CT-IR in the top 10 cm layer during the seed emergence period. Late maize seed emergence was observed NT in than ST-IR and CT-IR and the average annual yields in ST were slightly greater than NT and CT, but the differences were not significant. Our results also showed that CT-BR had a poor soil structure and lower SOC than other treatments at 0–30 cm depth. We conclude from these long-term experimental results that ST could improve soil water-heat conditions to promote seed germination, maintain soil structure, and increase the maize yield and it should be applied in the Mollisols region of Northeast China.

Aims: Present study was performed to examine whether ADH was implicated in psychological stress asthma and to explore the underlying molecular mechanism. Methods: We not only examined ADH levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) via radioimmunoassay, but also measured ADH receptor (ADHR) expression in airway-related vagal preganglionic neurons (AVPNs) through real-time PCR in all experimental mice. Western blotting was performed to evaluate the relationship between ADH and PKA/PKC in psychological stress asthma. Finally, the role of PKA/PKC in psychological stress asthma was analyzed. Results: Marked asthma exacerbations were noted owing to significantly elevated levels of ADH and ADHR after psychological stress induction as compared to OVA alone (asthma group). ADHR antagonists (SR-49095 or SR-121463A) dramatically lowered higher protein levels of PKAα and PKCα induced by psychological stress as compared to OVA alone, suggesting the correlation between ADH and PKA/PKC in psychological stress asthma. KT-5720 (PKA inhibitor) and Go-7874 (PKC inhibitor) further directly revealed the involvement of PKA/PKC in psychological stress asthma. Some notable changes were also noted after employing PKA and PKC inhibitors in psychological stress asthma, including reduced asthmatic inflammation (lower eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) activity, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, immunoglobulin E (IgE) level, and histamine release), substantial decrements in inflammatory cell counts (eosinophils and lymphocytes), and decreased cytokine secretion (IL-6, IL-10, and IFN-γ), indicating the involvement of PKA/PKC in asthma exacerbations induced by psychological stress. Conclusion: Our results strongly suggested that ADH participated in psychological stress-induced asthma exacerbations via PKA/PKC signal pathway in AVPNs.

When a material is immersed in a low-temperature medium, e.g., liquid nitrogen, its Young’s modulus and surface roughness will change as the temperature of the material decreases as a result of different friction behaviors. In this study, a high-precision friction test device was constructed to perform a detailed comparative study on the friction properties of a pure copper strand immersed in liquid nitrogen, air, and water. The force and displacement resolutions of the experimental system were as high as 0.01mN and 0.03μm, respectively. It was found that the stick-slip phenomenon in the liquid nitrogen was significant, while the slope of the stick-slip was larger than those observed in the air and water media. These experimental results were simulated using a spring-slider model that considered the influence of hydrophilicity on surface roughness. The roughness was shown to change the amplitude of the friction curve with time, while the slope of the stick-slip was dominated by the modulus’ magnitude variety.

Pinning induction in REBa2Cu3O7−x (RE = rare earth) films and coated conductors improves their critical current density (Jc). In general, however, interstitial elements, e.g., C and N, cannot act as effective pinning centers in REBa2Cu3O7−x materials because they typically lead to degeneration of the superconducting properties. In this work, the influence of graphene oxide (GO) on YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) films was studied by measuring the critical temperature and angle-dependent critical current density. The results revealed that the concentration of GO in YBCO films modulated the critical temperature. The decay rate of Jc in H∥c field orientations decreased with decreasing temperature. At 35 K and 4.2 K, the YBCO/GO film exhibited a lower decay of Jc and less anisotropic behavior than the YBCO-BaMO3 (M = Zr, Hf) film. GO doping could, therefore, improve the pinning property of YBCO films below 35 K. This improvement could be due to the presence of nanosized carbon structures, which served as isotropic pinning centers at low temperature, as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.
