7. Phase field simulations on the rate‐ and grain‐size‐dependent crack propagation of polycrystalline NiTi shape memory alloy.

Abstract

A three‐dimensional non‐isothermal phase field model of polycrystalline NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) was established based on the Ginzburg–Landau's theory, which considered the interaction between crack growth and martensite transformation (MT). Then, the crack propagation of polycrystalline NiTi SMA and its dependence on the system's grain size and loading rate were studied by the phase field simulations. The results show that the proposed phase field model can characterize the MT behavior, temperature field changes, and stress‐displacement response of NiTi SMA during the crack growth with different grain sizes and loading rates. That is the higher the loading rate, the higher the fracture toughness is; the larger the grain size, the higher the fracture toughness is and the more significant the influence of grain boundary on the crack growth path becomes. Meanwhile, as the grain size increases, the fracture mode gradually changes from the transgranular fracture (for the fine‐grained alloy with a grain size ≈ 15 nm) to the intergranular one (for the coarse‐grained alloy with a grain size ≈ 100 nm). Abstract

Summary: In clinical development, there is a trade‐off between investment and level of confidence in the potential of the drug before going into phase III. Reduced investment requires the use of short‐term endpoints. On new compounds, only limited information about the relationship between treatment effects of short‐ and long‐term endpoints is usually available. Therefore, decision‐making solely based on short‐term endpoints does not seem desirable. Our goal is to plan an efficient development program, which uses short‐ and long‐term endpoints data for decision‐making. We found that with limited prior information and restrictions on maximum sample size, decision‐making after phase II cannot be substantially improved. We follow the concept of a "phase 2+" design where after a go‐to‐phase‐III‐decision, further follow‐up data from phase II are employed to make interim decisions on phase III. The program will be stopped early when additional phase II and/or available phase III data lead to a low probability of success (PoS). We utilize information from a multi‐categorical short‐term endpoint (response status) and a long‐term endpoint (overall survival (OS)) to determine the PoS in phase III with OS as the primary endpoint. Optimal combinations of decision boundaries and time points are demonstrated in a simulation study. Our results show that the proposed second look using additional follow‐up data from phase II/III improves PoS estimates compared to the first look, especially when prior data about the control arm is available. 15. A Comparative Study of Academic Networks in Computer Science and Physics

Abstract

Academic networks derived from research papers, in particular citation and co- author networks, have been studied widely. Although networks in an individual discipline particularly physics have been studied substantially, the di erence across di erent disciplines remains unclear. This thesis shows that networks generated in computer science di er greatly the networks in Physics. The data used in our exper- iment contain more than two million papers in DBLP and half a million papers in Physical Review journals. We observe that both citation networks can be classi ed as scale-free networks. Papers in DBLP has a shorter life than PR. And physicists collaborate more closely than computer scientists in both citation and co-author net- works. Collaborations evolve over time in both disciplines. For the ranking of papers, we nd that the traditional PageRank algorithm is not appropriate for citation net- works. We investigate the small-world characteristics in both kinds of networks in terms of small average shortest path.
