Loops are fundamental structures in the magnetized atmosphere of the sun. Their physical properties are crucial for understanding the nature of the solar atmosphere. Transition region loops are relatively dynamic and their physical properties have not yet been fully understood. With spectral data of the line pair of O IV 1399.8 \AA & 1401.2 \AA ($T_{max}=1.4\times10^5$ K) of 23 transition region loops obtained by IRIS, we carry out the first systematic analyses to their loop lengths ($L$), electron densities ($n_e$) and effective temperatures. We found electron densities, loop lengths and effective temperatures of these loops are in the ranges of $8.9\times10^{9}$-$3.5\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$, 8-30 Mm and $1.9\times10^5$-$1.3\times10^6$ K, respectively. At a significant level of 90\%, regression analyses show that the relationship between electron densities and loop lengths is $n_e[cm^{-3}]\varpropto (L[Mm])^{-0.78\pm0.42}$, while the dependences of electron densities on effective temperatures and that on the line intensities are not obvious. These observations demonstrate that transition region loops are significantly different than their coronal counterparts. Further studies on the theoretical aspect based on the physical parameters obtained here are of significance for understanding the nature of transition region loops.

Context. Propagating streamer blobs could be an important source of disturbances in the solar wind. Direct observations on formation of streamer blobs could be a proxy for understanding the formation of small-scale structures and disturbances in the solar wind. Aims. We aim to investigate how a streamer blob is formed before it is observed in the outer corona. Methods. Usingspecialcoordinated-observationsfromSOHO/LASCO,GOES/SUVIandSDO/AIA, we study the precursors of a streamer blob as seen in the corona below 2.0 solar radii (Rs). Results. We found that the streamer blob was formed due to the gradual merging of three clumps of brightenings initiated from the lower corona at about 1.8Rs, which is likely driven by expansion of the loop system at the base of the streamer. The acceleration of the blob starts from 1.9Rs or lower. It propagates along the south flank of the streamer where an expanding elongated brightening occurs coincidently. Conclusions. Our observations demonstrate that formation of a streamer blob is a complex process. We suggest that the expansion of the loop results in a pinching-off flux-rope-like blob at the loop apex below 2Rs. When the blob moves outward, it can be transferred across the overlying loops through interchange/component magnetic reconnection and then is released into the open field system. When the blob moves toward open field lines, interchange magnetic reconnections might also occur, and that can accelerate the plasma blob intermittently whilst allow it to transfer across the open field lines. Such dynamics in a streamer blob might further trigger small-scale disturbances in the solar wind such as switchbacks in the inner heliosphere.

Solar Ring (SOR) is a proposed space science mission to monitor and study the Sun and inner heliosphere from a full 360{\deg} perspective in the ecliptic plane. It will deploy three 120{\deg}-separated spacecraft on the 1-AU orbit. The first spacecraft, S1, locates 30{\deg} upstream of the Earth, the second, S2, 90{\deg} downstream, and the third, S3, completes the configuration. This design with necessary science instruments, e.g., the Doppler-velocity and vector magnetic field imager, wide-angle coronagraph, and in-situ instruments, will allow us to establish many unprecedented capabilities: (1) provide simultaneous Doppler-velocity observations of the whole solar surface to understand the deep interior, (2) provide vector magnetograms of the whole photosphere - the inner boundary of the solar atmosphere and heliosphere, (3) provide the information of the whole lifetime evolution of solar featured structures, and (4) provide the whole view of solar transients and space weather in the inner heliosphere. With these capabilities, Solar Ring mission aims to address outstanding questions about the origin of solar cycle, the origin of solar eruptions and the origin of extreme space weather events. Probing the solar corona is crucial to study the coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. However, the transient and inhomogeneous solar wind flows carry large-amplitude inherent Alfven waves and turbulence, which make detection more difficult. We report the oscillation and propagation of the solar wind at 2.6 solar radii (Rs) by observation of China Tianwen and ESA Mars Express with radio telescopes. The observations were carried out on Oct.9 2021, when one coronal mass ejection (CME) passed across the ray paths of the telescope beams. We obtain the frequency fluctuations (FF) of the spacecraft signals from each individual telescope. Firstly, we visually identify the drift of the frequency spikes at a high spatial resolution of thousands of kilometers along the projected baselines. They are used as traces to estimate the solar wind velocity. Then we perform the cross-correlation analysis on the time series of FF from different telescopes. The velocity variations of solar wind structure along radial and tangential directions during the CME passage are obtained. The oscillation of tangential velocity confirms the detection of streamer wave. Moreover, at the tail of the CME, we detect the propagation of an accelerating fast field-aligned density structure indicating the presence of magnetohydrodynamic waves. This study confirm that the ground station-pairs are able to form particular spatial projection baselines with high resolution and sensitivity to study the detailed propagation of the nascent dynamic solar wind structure., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Jets are one of the most common eruptive events in the solar atmosphere, and they are believed to be important in the context of coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. We present an observational study on a sequence of jets with the data acquired with the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). This sequence is peculiar in that an EUV jet, $\sim29\arcsec$ long and with a dome-like base, appears to be a consequence of a series of transition region (TR) micro-jets that are a few arcsecs in length.We find that the occurrence of any TR micro-jets is always associated with the change of geometry of micro-loops at the footpoints of the microjets. A bundle of TR flux ropes is seen to link a TR micro-jet to the dome-like structure at the base of the EUV jet. This bundle rises as a response to the TR micro-jets, with the rising motion eventually triggering the EUV jet. We propose a scenario involving a set of magnetic reconnections, in which the series of TR micro-jets are associated with the processes to remove the constraints to the TR flux ropes and thus allow them to rise and trigger the EUV jet. Our study demonstrates that small-scale dynamics in the lower solar atmosphere are crucial in understanding the energy and mass connection between the corona and the solar lower atmosphere, even though many of them might not pump mass and energy to the corona directly.

Observation of Interplanetary Scintillation (IPS) provides an important and effective way to study the solar wind and the space weather. A series of IPS observations were conducted by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The extraordinary sensitivity and the wide frequency coverage make FAST an ideal platform for IPS studies. In this paper we present some first scientific results from FAST observations of IPS with the L-band receiver. Based on the solar wind velocity fitting values of FAST observations on September 26-28, 2020, we found that the velocity decreases with increasing frequency linearly, which has not yet been reported in literature. And we have also detected a variation of solar wind velocity on a timescale of 3-5 minutes, which imply the slow change of the background solar wind, a co-existence of high- and low-speed streams, or a reflect of the quasi-periodic electron-density fluctuations., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Fast sausage modes in solar magnetic coronal loops are only fully contained in unrealistically short dense loops. Otherwise they are leaky, losing energy to their surrounds as outgoing waves. This causes any oscillation to decay exponentially in time. Simultaneous observations of both period and decay rate therefore reveal the eigenfrequency of the observed mode, and potentially insight into the tubes' nonuniform internal structure. In this article, a global spectral description of the oscillations is presented that results in an implicit matrix eigenvalue equation where the eigenvalues are associated predominantly with the diagonal terms of the matrix. The off-diagonal terms vanish identically if the tube is uniform. A linearized perturbation approach, applied with respect to a uniform reference model, is developed that makes the eigenvalues explicit. The implicit eigenvalue problem is easily solved numerically though, and it is shown that knowledge of the real and imaginary parts of the eigenfrequency is sufficient to determine the width and density contrast of a boundary layer over which the tubes' enhanced internal densities drop to ambient values. Linearized density kernels are developed that show sensitivity only to the extreme outside of the loops for radial fundamental modes, especially for small density enhancements, with no sensitivity to the core. Higher radial harmonics do show some internal sensitivity, but these will be more difficult to observe. Only kink modes are sensitive to the tube centres. {Variation in internal and external Alfv\'en speed along the loop is shown to have little effect on the fundamental dimensionless eigenfrequency, though the associated eigenfunction becomes more compact at the loop apex as stratification increases, or may even displace from the apex., Comment: Accepted J. The behavior of the axial group speeds of trapped sausage modes plays an important role in determining impulsively generated wave trains, which have often been invoked to account for quasi-periodic signals with quasi-periods of order seconds in a considerable number of coronal structures. We conduct a comprehensive eigenmode analysis, both analytically and numerically, on the dispersive properties of sausage modes in pressureless tubes with three families of continuous radial density profiles. We find a rich variety of the dependence on the axial wavenumber $k$ of the axial group speed $v_{\rm gr}$. Depending on the density contrast and profile steepness as well as on the detailed profile description, the $v_{\rm gr}-k$ curves either possess or do not possess cutoff wavenumbers, and they can behave in either a monotonical or non-monotonical manner. With time-dependent simulations, we further show that this rich variety of the group speed characteristics heavily influences the temporal evolution and Morlet spectra of impulsively generated wave trains. In particular, the Morlet spectra can look substantially different from "crazy tadpoles" found for the much-studied discontinuous density profiles. We conclude that it is necessary to re-examine available high-cadence data to look for the rich set of temporal and spectral features, which can be employed to discriminate between the unknown forms of the density distributions transverse to coronal structures., Comment: 40 pages, 13 figures, submitted to ApJ
