Abstract Developing light yet strong aluminum (Al)-based alloys has been attracting unremitting efforts due to the soaring demand for energy-efficient structural materials. However, this endeavor is impeded by the limited solubility of other lighter components in Al. Here, we propose to surmount this challenge by converting multiple brittle phases into a ductile solid solution in Al-based complex concentrated alloys (CCA) by applying high pressure and temperature. We successfully develop a face-centered cubic single-phase Al-based CCA, Al55Mg35Li5Zn5, with a low density of 2.40 g/cm3 and a high specific yield strength of 344×103 N·m/kg (typically ~ 200×103 N·m/kg in conventional Al-based alloys). Our analysis reveals that formation of the single-phase CCA can be attributed to the decreased difference in atomic size and electronegativity between the solute elements and Al under high pressure, as well as the synergistic high entropy effect caused by high temperature and high pressure. The increase in strength originates mainly from high solid solution and nanoscale chemical fluctuations. Our findings could offer a viable route to explore lightweight single-phase CCAs in a vast composition-temperature-pressure space with enhanced mechanical properties.

Abstract Polyamorphic transition (PT) is a compelling and pivotal physical phenomenon in the field of glass and materials science. Understanding this transition is of scientific and technological significance, as it offers an important pathway for effectively tuning the structure and property of glasses. In contrast to the PT observed in conventional metallic glasses (MGs), which typically exhibit a pronounced first-order nature, herein we report a continuous PT (CPT) without first-order characteristics in high-entropy MGs (HEMGs) upon heating. This CPT behavior is featured by the continuous structural evolution at the atomic level and an increasing chemical concentration gradient with temperature, but no abrupt reduction in volume and energy. The continuous transformation is associated with the absence of local favorable structures and chemical heterogeneity caused by the high configurational entropy, which limits the distance and frequency of atomic diffusion. As a result of the CPT, numerous glass states can be generated, which provides an opportunity to understand the nature, atomic packing, formability, and properties of MGs. Moreover, this discovery highlights the implication of configurational entropy in exploring polyamorphic glasses with an identical composition but highly tunable structures and properties.

Abstract The Yangtze River is one of the largest riverine ecosystems in the world and is a biodiversity hotspot. In recent years, this river ecosystem has undergone rapid habitat deterioration due to anthropogenic disturbances, leading to a decrease in freshwater biodiversity. Owing to these anthropogenic impacts, the Chinese government imposed a “Ten‐year fishing ban” (TYFB) in the Yangtze River and its tributaries. Ecological changes associated with this decision have not been documented to evaluate the level of success. This study evaluates the success of the TYFB by analyzing the changes in phytoplankton communities and comparing them to periods before the TYFB was imposed. A total of 325 phytoplankton species belonging to 7 phyla and 103 genera dominated by Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae were identified. Species diversity according to the Shannon–Wiener ranged between 1.19 and 3.00. The results indicated that phytoplankton diversity increased, while both density and biomass decreased after the TYFB. The health of the aquatic ecosystem appeared to have improved after the TYFB, as indicated by the phytoplankton‐based index of biotic integrity. Significant seasonal and spatial differences were found among the number of species, density, and biomass of phytoplankton, where these differences were correlated with pH, water depth, chlorophyll‐a, permanganate index, transparency, copper, ammonia nitrogen, and total phosphorus based on redundancy analysis. Results from this study indicate that the TYFB played an important role in the restoration of freshwater ecosystem in the Yangtze River and its tributaries.

Abstract Elastic stability is the basis for understanding structural responses to external stimuli in crystalline solids, including melting, incipient plasticity and fracture. In this work, elastic stability is investigated in a series of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) using in situ mechanical tests and atomic-resolution characterization in transmission electron microscopy. Under tensile loading, the HEA lattices are observed to undergo a sudden loss of ordering as the elastic strain reached ∽ 10%. Such elastic strain-induced amorphization stands in intrinsic contrast to previously reported dislocation-mediated elastic instability and defect accumulation-mediated amorphization, introducing a form of elastic instability. Together with the first principle calculations and atomic-resolution chemical mapping, we identify that the elastic strain-induced amorphization is closely related to the depressed dislocation nucleation due to the local atomic environment inhomogeneity of HEAs. Our findings provide insights for the understanding of the fundamental nature of physical mechanical phenomena like elastic instability and incipient plasticity.

To further enhance the application of nobiletin (an important active ingredient in Citrus fruits), we used ultrasonic homogenization-assisted antisolvent precipitation to create ultrafine particles of nobiletin (UPN). DMSO was used as the solvent, and deionized water was used as the antisolvent. When ultrasonication (670 W) and homogenization (16000 r/min) were synergistic, the solution concentration was 57 mg/mL, and the minimum particle size of UPN was 521.02 nm. The UPN samples outperformed the RN samples in terms of the inhibition of porcine pancreatic lipase, which was inhibited (by 500 mg/mL) by 68.41 % in the raw sample, 90.34 % in the ultrafine sample, and 83.59 % in the positive control, according to the data. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis revealed no chemical changes in the samples before or after preparation. However, the crystallinity of the processed ultrafine nobiletin particles decreased. Thus, this work offers significant relevance for applications in the realm of food chemistry and indirectly illustrates the expanded application potential of nobiletin.

A new species of freshwater mussel belonging to the genus Pseudocuneopsis, namely Pseudocuneopsis wuana sp. nov., is diagnosed and described from Guangxi Province, China. This paper provides a detailed shell morphological description, soft-body anatomical characteristics, and partial sequences of mitochondrial COI as DNA barcode data for the novel species. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners (Pseudocuneopsis sichuanensis, P. yangshuoensis, and P. capitata) by shell shape, beak position, and surface sculpture. Phylogenetic analyses based on the mitochondrial COI gene reveal that Pseudocuneopsis wuana sp. nov. forms a sister group with P. yangshuoensis and exhibits an interspecific genetic distance of 5.1%. Therefore, we provide robust morphological and molecular evidence to support the validity of this new species.

Therefore, we provide robust morphological and molecular evidence to support the validity of this new species.

Abstract Background Habitat degradation and flow regime alterations are two of the most prominent and common impact factors to freshwater mussel populations. Knowledge of the correlation between freshwater mussel distribution, density and habitat characteristics is important for maintaining and restoring their biodiversity and ecological functions. Information on predicting habitat suitability of freshwater mussels is lacking in China. Here, we aimed to analyze the correlation between freshwater mussel density and complex hydraulic and physicochemical variables to predict habitat suitability. Results The results showed that four complex hydraulic variables (boundary Reynolds number, critical shear stress, bed roughness and mean sediment particle size) and four physicochemical variables (water temperature, chlorophyll-a, transparency and pH) were key factors for predicting habitat suitability of freshwater mussels. Freshwater mussel density was significantly correlated with Froude number, water temperature and chlorophyll-a. Conclusions Our results confirmed that higher freshwater mussel density would be associated with areas that are stable in complex hydraulic and physicochemical variables. These results provide an important insight into the conservation of freshwater mussel diversity and their habitat restoration in China and globally.

The worldwide decline in freshwater biodiversity due to rising anthropogenic pressures is of growing concern. Much evidence reveals that biodiversity loss and taxonomic homogenization results in loss of ecosystem functions. Understanding temporal and spatial patterns of biodiversity is, a major challenge in ecological conservation. Of all groups of threatened aquatic animals, freshwater mussels are responsible for critical trophic and non-trophic functions. Based on published inventories and field surveys, here we aim to evaluate whether freshwater mussel diversity, density and biomass has changed in the last 60 years, as well as the factors driving these patterns in different areas within the Poyang Lake basin, a global biodiversity hotspot in the middle reach of the Yangtze River. Results showed that alpha diversity has declined in the current period (2016–2020) as compared to diversity in the historical (1960–2003) and intermediate periods (2003–2014). Overall species richness declined by 28 % over 60 years. Density and biomass also declined by 79 % and 42 %, respectively. Population declines led to homogenization of freshwater mussel faunas. Additionally, there was a significant association between pH and alpha and beta diversity, suggesting that acidification related to intensive agriculture development may be one major factor behind mussel declines. In summary, this study provides new insights into the patterns and drivers of freshwater mussel population dynamics in the Poyang Lake basin. The results have implications for the design of freshwater protected areas to slow, and even reverse, current declines.

Ordered oxygen complexes (OOCs) endow a unique interstitial strengthening mechanism for simultaneously enhancing strength and ductility in HEAs. Here, the authors demonstrate whether such mechanism can be extended to other alloy systems and how the formation of OOCs is tailored.

In order to address the issue of nobiletin's limited bioavailability, nobiletin nanoparticles (NNP) were created for the first time in this research employing an anti-solvent under ultrasonication-cis/reverse homogenization. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was used as the solvent and deionized water as the anti-solvent to create the nobiletin solution. The optimal surfactant dose of surfactant dose of 0.43%; an ultrasonic period of 8.1 min, ultrasonic at a temperature of 64 °C and a solution concentration of 8.33 mg/mL, the method was optimized to obtain the minimum NNP diameter of 199.89 ± 0.02 nm. A dual optimization process of response surface PBD and BBD was used to minimize the size of HNP particles. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy revealed that the specific surface area of the NNP dramatically increased with the reduction of NNP particle size, and dissolving studies indicated the solubility and dissolution studies showed that NNP had substantially greater solubility and dissolution rates than raw nobiletin per unit time; as a result, the NNP produced by anti-solvent precipitation with a twofold homogenization system supported by ultrasound had a realistic potential for growth.

Invasive species are one of the most serious threats to biodiversity. Pomacea canaliculata is considered one of the world’s 100 worst invasive species. Major determinants of invasive species distribution are their environmental tolerances, and an understanding of correlations between local environmental variables (e.g., pH, concentration of dissolved oxygen) and genetic diversity is necessary to better prevent and manage the spread of invasive species. However, while such studies have demonstrated associations between the distribution and density of P. canaliculata and water quality correlates, the principal mechanisms relating genetic and these environmental correlates have not been fully articulated. Here, the correlation between physicochemical parameters and genetics of P. canaliculata were analyzed. The results showed that P. canaliculata among the six collection locations had robust genetic diversity, significant genetic differentiation, limited gene flow, and stable population dynamics. RDA analysis showed that genetic variation in P. canaliculata was significantly correlated with concentration of dissolved oxygen and pH. These results will provide a basis for effectively preventing and managing the spread of invasive species and identifying which habitats may be more at risk of invasion.

Abstract Anthropogenic habitat alteration interferes the natural aquatic habitats and the system's hydrodynamics in the Yangtze River floodplain lakes, resulting in a serious decline in freshwater biodiversity. Zooplankton communities possess major position in freshwater ecosystems, which play essential parts in maintaining biological balance of freshwater habitats. Knowledge of processes and mechanisms for affecting variations in abundance, biomass, and diversity of zooplankton is important for maintaining biological balance of freshwater ecosystems. Here, we analyzed that the temporal and spatial changes in the structure of zooplankton community and their temporal and spatial variations respond to changes in environmental factors in the middle reach of Yangtze River floodplain lakes. The results showed that zooplankton samples were classified into 128 species, and Rotifera was the most common taxa. Significant seasonal differences were found among the abundance and diversity of zooplankton. Similarly, we also found significant seasonal differences among the biomass of zooplankton functional groups. The spatial turnover component was the main contributor to the β diversity pattern, which indicated that study areas should establish habitat restoration areas to restore regional biodiversity. The NMDS plot showed that the structure of zooplankton community exhibited significant seasonal changes, where the community structure was correlated with pH, water temperature, water depth, salinity, total nitrogen, chlorophyll‐a, and total phosphorus based on RDA. This study highlights that it is very important to ensure the floodplain ecosystem's original state of functionality for maintaining the regional diversity of the ecosystem as a whole.

Common wisdom to improve ductility of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) is to introduce local loose packing regions at the expense of strength. Here the authors enhance structural fluctuations of BMGs by introducing dense local packing regions, resulting in simultaneous increase of ductility and strength.

We diagnose and describe a new freshwater mussel species of the genus Inversidens, I. rentianensis sp. nov. from Jiangxi Province, China based on morphological characters and molecular data. This paper includes a morphological description and photograph of the holotype, and partial sequences of mitochondrial COI as DNA barcode data.

Abstract Accurate species identification is crucial for developing conservation strategies for freshwater mussels, one of the most imperiled faunas in the world. Traditionally, mussel species description primarily relied on conchological characters. However, shell morphology has great variability, which leads to the complexity of species delimitation. As endemic species to China, Lamprotula caveata was originally described by Heude (1877). Lamprotula quadrangulosus and Lamprotula contritus were considered for synonymization of L. caveata based on shell variants in the early 20th century, which has been long debated due to lack of rigorous molecular analysis. Moreover, great morphological variation caused doubt whether there are cryptic species. In this study, we used a combined phylogenetic and morphometric approach to verify the validity of the synonymization of L. caveata. The results of molecular species delimitation showed that two molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) were identified in Lamprotula spp., including the L. leaii lineage and the complex lineage (L. quadrangulosa, L. cornuumlunae, L. contritus, and L. caveata). Phylogenetic analyses revealed that L. cornuumlunae formed a basal monophyletic clade, whose divergence time was relatively recent (4.26 Ma [95% HPD = 1.91–7.22 Ma]), and L. contritus, L. caveata, and L. quadrangulosa formed a large polytomy group with very shallow branches. In the previous study, we have demonstrated the validity of L. cornuumlunae. The molecular evidences supported that the complex (L. quadrangulosa + L. contritus + L. caveata) was a valid species; L. quadrangulosa and L. contritus were synonyms of L. caveata. In addition, three morphospecies (L. quadrangulosa, L. contritus, and L. caveata) were aggregated without clear differentiation based on shell morphometric analysis. We confirmed multiple phenotypes in L. caveata for species identification and presumed that the phenotypic plasticity was a response to specific habitats. This study clarified the diversity and phylogeny of the Lamprotula group, which is a crucial step for developing new conservation and management strategies for this imperiled group.

Abstract Freshwater ecosystems face multiple threats to their stability globally. Poyang Lake is the largest lake in China, but its habitat has been seriously degraded because of human activities and natural factors (e.g. climate change), resulting in a decline in freshwater biodiversity. Zooplankton are useful indicators of environmental stressors because they are sensitive to external perturbations. DNA metabarcoding is an approach that has gained significant traction by aiding ecosystem conservation and management. Here, the seasonal and spatial variability in the zooplankton diversity were analyzed in the Poyang Lake Basin using DNA metabarcoding. The results showed that the community structure of zooplankton exhibited significant seasonal and spatial variability using DNA metabarcoding, where the community structure was correlated with turbidity, water temperature, pH, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll‐a. These results indicated habitat variations affected by human activities and seasonal change could be the main driving factors for the variations of zooplankton community. This study also provides an important reference for the management of aquatic ecosystem health and conservation of aquatic biodiversity.

Abstract Fe-based metallic glasses (MGs) have been extensively investigated due to their unique properties, especially the outstanding soft-magnetic properties. However, conventional design of soft-magnetic Fe-based MGs is heavily relied on “trial and error” experiments, and thus difficult to balance the saturation flux density (B s) and thermal stability due to the strong interplay between the glass formation and magnetic interaction. Herein, we report an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine-learning (ML) model for developing advanced Fe-based MGs with a decent combination of B s and thermal stability. While it is an attempt to apply ML for exploring soft-magnetic property and thermal stability, the developed XGBoost model based on the intrinsic elemental properties (i.e., atomic size and electronegativity) can well predict B s and T x (the onset crystallization temperature) with an accuracy of 93.0% and 94.3%, respectively. More importantly, we derived the key features that primarily dictate B s and T x of Fe-based MGs from the ML model, which enables the revelation of the physical origins underlying the high B s and thermal stability. As a proof of concept, several Fe-based MGs with high T x (>800 K) and high B s (>1.4 T) were successfully developed in terms of the ML model. This work demonstrates that the XGBoost ML approach is interpretable and feasible in the extraction of decisive parameters for properties of Fe-based magnetic MGs, which might allow us to efficiently design high-performance glassy materials.

Abstract Achieving a porous architecture with multiple‐length scales and utilizing the synergetic effects of multicomponent chemicals bring up new opportunities for further improving the electrocatalytic performance of nanocatalysts. Herein, the synthesis of a self‐supported hierarchical porous electrocatalyst based on a high‐entropy alloy (HEA) containing multiple transitional metals via physical metallurgy and dealloying strategies is reported. Microscale phase separation and nanoscale spinodal decomposition are modulated in a highly concentrated FeCoNiCu HEA, which makes it possible to obtain a porous structure with different length scales, i.e., relatively large porous channels formed by removing one separated phase and ultrafine mesopores obtained from leaching out one decomposition phase. The resultant hierarchical porous HEA exhibits superior water splitting performance, which takes full advantage of the enlarged surface area offered by the bi‐continuous mesoporous structure with the exceptional intrinsic reactivity originating from the synergetic electronic effects of the different components in alloying. Moreover, the microscale porous structure plays an important role in the significantly improved mass transportation, as well as the durability during electrocatalysis. This effective strategy that simultaneously utilizes the chemical and microstructural advantages of HEAs opens up a new avenue for developing HEA‐based, high‐performance porous electrocatalysts for various energy conversion/store applications.

Abstract Freshwater mussels are both among the most diverse and endangered faunas worldwide. The gut microbiota of species plays a key role in nutrition and immunity, such as preventing it from pathogen invasion, synthesizing beneficial secondary metabolites, and contributing to the digestion of complex nutrients. Information on the gut microbiota could have significant implications for conservation biology, especially for threatened or endangered species. However, there is relatively little study into the gut microbiota of freshwater mussels. Here, the gut microbiota diversity was analyzed in endangered (Solenaia carinata), economical (Sinohyriopsis cumingii), and common (Sinanodonta woodiana) freshwater mussels using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. This study represents the first to compare the gut microbiota diversity of endangered, economical, and common Chinese freshwater mussels. The results showed that 13,535 OTUs were found in S. carinata, 12,985 OTUs in S. cumingii, and 9,365 OTUs in S. woodiana. The dominant phylum in S. carinata and S. cumingii was Fusobacteria, and was Firmicutes in S. woodiana. Alpha diversity indices indicated that S. carinata and S. cumingii had a higher abundance and diversity of gut microbiota than S. woodiana. The composition of gut microbiota was different among three freshwater mussels, but their composition variation was not significant. This study provides insight for the conservation of freshwater mussel biodiversity, which will not only help conserve these vulnerable groups but also, will offer wider benefits to freshwater ecosystems.

Characteristics of deformation-induced transformation under loading dictate the mechanical performance of TRIP (transformation-induced plasticity)-reinforced bulk metallic glass composites (BMGCs), which have shown great potential as engineering materials. Here, we report that the addition of 0.3 at.% Ta in the $\textrm{T}{\textrm{i}_{45}}\textrm{C}{\textrm{u}_{41}}\textrm{N}{\textrm{i}_9}\textrm{Z}{\textrm{r}_5} $ alloy could induce the formation of uniform glassy composite structure with B2-(Ti,Zr)(Ni,Cu) precipitates. More interestingly, nanosized A2-(Ti,Zr)(Ni,Cu) particles also formed inside B2 grains which effectively impede rapid propagation of martensite plates and lead to the formation of multi-oriented martensites, eventually homogenizing the involved plastic flow during deformation-induced transformation. Consequently, high fracture strength (∼3000 MPa), large plasticity (∼25%) and pronounced work-hardening ability were achieved.

Abstract Freshwater mussels provide important functions and services for aquatic ecosystems, but populations of many species have been extirpated. Information on biodiversity plays an important role in the conservation and management of freshwater mussels. The Xin River Basin is a biodiversity hotspot for freshwater mussels in China, with more than 43 species known, but populations of which are decreasing. Here, we quantify the diversity of freshwater mussels in the middle and lower reaches of the Xin River Basin and study the correlation of habitat characteristics and freshwater mussel diversity. Compared to the historical period, the number of species, density, and biomass of freshwater mussels decreased 33%, 83%, and 82% in the current period, respectively. Fifty two percent of recorded species were empty shells, and 14 native freshwater mussels were not found in the study area. Four species are currently listed as vulnerable species using IUCN criteria and their global status. The assemblage structure of freshwater mussels exhibits significant spatial differences, and there was a correlation with substrate and physicochemical parameters. The main tributary of the Xin River with higher freshwater mussel diversity should be established as one large protected area because the nestedness component was the main pattern of beta diversity. These results indicated freshwater mussel diversity was declining rapidly, which can help focus conservation effort for freshwater mussel biodiversity.

Cultivated and wild fish of the same species may exhibit different characteristics, such as in their flavor, growth and development. In some wild fish species, reproductive functions may even be retarded when wild individuals are moved into cultivated conditions. The gut microbiota may be one of the reasons for these phenomena as they have been reported to play an important role in host growth and development, as well as in normal reproductive functioning. Here, we used Mastacembelus armatus (zig-zag eel), a freshwater fish which shows anormal reproductive function in cultivated conditions, as a model to comparatively study the diversity, structure and function of gut microbiota in cultivated and wild groups by analyzing the 16S rRNA sequence of each group’s microbiota. The results showed that Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were the dominant phyla in the gut microbiota of wild (accounting for 45.8% and 20.3% of the total number of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, respectively) and farmed (accounting for 21.4% and 75.6% of the total number of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, respectively) zig-zag eel. Wild zig-zag eels (Shannon = 3.56; Chao = 583.08; Ace = 579.18) had significantly higher alpha diversity than those in cultivated populations (Shannon = 2.09; Chao = 85.45; Ace = 86.14). A significant difference in the community structure of the gut microbiota was found between wild and cultivated populations. The wild zig-zag eel showed a high abundance of functional pathways in metabolism, genetic information processing and organismal system function. These results suggested that the diversity and function of gut microbiota in zig-zag eel were correlated with their diet and habitat conditions, which indicated that the management of cultivated populations should mimic the wild diet and habitat to improve the productivity and quality of farmed zig-zag eel.

Abstract Poyang Lake Basin is of great importance to maintain regional ecological balance. However, fish biodiversity in this basin has rapidly declined as the result of anthropogenic habitat alteration, such as dam construction, sand mining, and water pollution. Here, we aimed to analyze the temporal and spatial changes in biodiversity patterns of fish in Poyang Lake Basin over the last 37 years. The number of fish species underwent a significant decrease in the current period. In particular, 36.7% of the migration of fish was extirpated. Twenty‐seven fish species have been formally assessed using the Chinese Red List were currently listed as Critically Endangered (9), Endangered (3), Vulnerable (10), and Near Threatened (5). Alpha and gamma diversity revealed that fish diversity had also decreased, and beta diversity showed significant composition dissimilarity in two periods. PCoA showed that the historical fish composition dissimilarity was significantly different from that of the current period. We found a significant effect of the geographical distance on the spatial turnover component for the historical and current periods. In addition, the nestedness component was the main contributor to beta diversity, which indicated one large protected area should be established in Poyang Lake and the Ganjiang River Basin with higher species richness. These results indicated that fish biodiversity declined in the current period likely caused by anthropogenic habitat alteration and other threatened factors. Therefore, we suggest that the habitat reconstruction and biodiversity conservation for fish have become imperative in this basin, and a complete management plan should be carried out.

Invasive species of Pomacea snails are of growing concern when it comes to the conservation of global biodiversity. Pomacea canaliculata has been listed among the world’s 100 worst invasive species. In this work, phylogeographic patterns and the demographic history of P. canaliculata and P. maculata from different countries were analyzed using mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit-I (COI) sequences. The results showed that P. canaliculata and P. maculata had high genetic diversity, significant genetic differentiation, limited gene flow and stable population dynamics among different countries. Genetic diversity of P. canaliculata was higher than P. maculata. Our study will also provide important information for the effective prevention and control of the spread of Pomacea snails.

Abstract Poyang Lake plays a significant role in maintaining and replenishing the macrozoobenthos biodiversity in the middle Yangtze River. However, due to human activities and natural factors, the habitat of Poyang Lake has been seriously degraded, resulting in a decline in macrozoobenthos biodiversity. Here, we analyzed the effect of human activity and environmental elements change on the diversity of macrozoobenthos based on a systematic investigation of Poyang Lake Basin in 2016–2017. The current species richness, density, and biomass of macrozoobenthos were lower than those in the historical period. At the same time, the community structure of the macrozoobenthos assemblage exhibits significant temporal and spatial differences. In addition, the spatial turnover component was the main contribution to beta diversity, which indicated that a number of protected areas would be necessary to conserve the biodiversity of macrozoobenthos. Water depth, dissolved oxygen, water velocity, and chlorophyll‐a were significantly correlated with macrozoobenthos distributions and assemblage structure based on RDA. These results indicated that human activities have seriously destroyed the macrozoobenthos habitat and led to the decline in macrozoobenthos diversity. Therefore, habitat restoration and the conservation of macrozoobenthos have become urgent in Poyang Lake Basin, and an integrated management plan should be developed and effectively implemented.

Biocompatibility of HEAs in the TiZrHfNbTa system in which all the constituents are non-toxic and allergy-free was scrutinized systematically, and novel biomechanical materials with a unique combination of low modulus (57 GPa, almost half that of conventional biomedical titanium alloys), good mechanical biocompatibility and low magnetic susceptibility (1.71 × 10−6 cm3 g−1, similar to that of pure Zr) were successfully developed. Moreover, the underlying mechanisms responsible for phase formation and promising properties were explored. This work not only offers a series of novel bio-metallic materials with prominent properties for practical applications, but also shed light on understanding of phase formation and strengthening of HEAs in general.

The Luoxiao Mountains play an important role in maintaining and supplementing the fish diversity of the Yangtze River Basin, which is also a biodiversity hotspot in China. However, fish biodiversity has declined rapidly in this area as the result of human activities and the consequent environmental changes. Beta diversity was a key concept for understanding the ecosystem function and biodiversity conservation. Beta diversity patterns are evaluated and important information provided for protection and management of fish biodiversity in the Luoxiao Mountains. The results showed that the spatial turnover component was the main contributor to beta diversity of Hemiramphidae, Amblycipitidae, Catostomidae, Clariidae, Balitoridae and Percichthyidae in the Luoxiao Mountains, which indicated that a number of protected areas would be necessary to conserve fish biodiversity and that these families would need conservation measures. Most protected areas are currently limited to some regions; therefore, in order to protect fish diversity, conservation efforts must target an increase in the number of protected areas which should be spread across each of the regions.

Freshwater-fish diversity declined rapidly due to multiple anthropogenic disturbances. The loss of fish diversity often manifested itself in taxonomic homogenization over time. Knowledge of multi-faceted diversity (i.e., species, functional, and phylogenetic diversity) perspectives is important for biodiversity assessment and conservation planning. Here, we analyzed the change of the species diversity and phylogenetic diversity of fish in 2008 and 2021 as well as explored the driver factors of the biodiversity patterns in the Lushan National Nature Reserve. The results showed that the species diversity and phylogenetic diversity of fish have declined from 2008 to 2021, with five species lost over time. We found an overall homogenization trend in the fish fauna of the study area, with a 4% increase in taxonomic similarity among the rivers. Additionally, we found that community structure of fish was significantly different among the rivers, and environmental filtering was the main contributor to the phylogenetic diversity of fish in 2008 and 2021. This study provides new insight into the patterns and drivers of fish-biodiversity change in the broader Yangtze River basin and informs management efforts.

Dams and diversions are a primary threat to freshwater fish biodiversity, including the loss of species and restructuring of communities, often resulting in taxonomic homogenization (increased similarity) over time. Mitigating these impacts requires a strong scientific understanding of both patterns and drivers of fish diversity. Here, we test whether different components of fish biodiversity have changed in response to major dam construction, and whether these patterns are predictable as a function of key environmental factors in the Gan River Basin, China. The results showed that total and native species alpha diversity have declined from the historical period (pre-dam) to the current period (post-dam). A total of 29 native species are lost, while 6 alien species were gained over time. We found evidence for fish faunal homogenization in the Gan River Basin, with a slight (1%) increase in taxonomic similarity among river basins from the historical period to the current period. Additionally, we revealed significant associations between drainage length, drainage area, and average air temperature, and alpha and beta fish diversity. This study provides new insight into the patterns and drivers of fish biodiversity change in the broader Yangtze River Basin and helps inform management efforts seeking to slow, and even reverse, current trajectories of biodiversity change.

The freshwater clam Corbicula fluminea s.l. is an edible freshwater bivalve of economic value in Asia. The species has been particularly well studied in the invaded range. However, there is a lack of knowledge in its native range where it supports an increasing commercial harvest pressure. Among Asiatic countries, China accounts for 70% of known commercial harvest and aquaculture production. We aim to characterize here wild C. fluminea s.l populations exposed to commercial harvest pressure in Poyang Lake Basin. We found higher biomass, density and genetic diversity in lake populations compared to peripheral populations (i.e., lake tributaries). Given that lake habitats support more intense harvest pressure than peripheral habitats, we suggest that demographic and genetic differentiation among subpopulations may be influenced in some degree by different harvest pressure. In this regard, additional demographic and/or genetic changes related to increasing harvest pressure may place population at a higher risk of extirpation. Altogether, these results are especially relevant for maintaining populations at or above viable levels and must be considered in order to ensure the sustainability of the resource.

The Yangtze River Basin (Changjiang Basin) hosts one of the most diverse freshwater mussel assemblages on Earth. However, due to human activities this fauna is dramatically imperiled in this region, highlighting the need for urgent conservation measures. To better protect and conserve these taxa, it is crucial to understand the main drivers that control the diversity patterns, as well as the anthropogenic influence on these patterns. Here, we estimated distinct diversity metrics (i.e. species richness and alpha, gamma, and beta diversity) to analyze the spatial freshwater mussel diversity changes across 16 tributaries and lakes from the middle and lower Yangtze River Basin, in two periods: past 1962–2012 and present. For the past, mussel records were compiled from previous studies, for the present, we surveyed 565 sites for freshwater mussel presence and abundance within the 16 selected areas. We also assessed several climatic and geographical parameters to try to identify the main factors that modulate species composition across the study area. We show that from the historical to the present periods, species diversity experienced a significant decrease, registering, per river/lake, an average of 5.4 extirpations of species native to China and 3.9 of the Yangtze River Basin endemics. The gamma diversity of the whole study area and the alpha diversity of each of the studied rivers and lakes have also decreased during this period. The beta diversity values indicated a significant trend towards taxonomic homogenization over the last decades. Poyang and Dongting Lakes should be considered for protection given due to their high diversity and species loss given that nestedness in these lakes represented the main component of beta diversity.

In recent decades, there have been considerable improvements in target-tracking algorithms. However, aspects such as target occlusion, scale variation, and illumination changes still present significant challenges to existing algorithms. In this paper, we describe an occlusion-aware correlation particle filter target-tracking method based on RGBD data. First, we derive a target occlusion judgment mechanism based on a depth image and the histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) feature. We then formulate the tracking mechanism for the target prediction-tracking-optimization-redetection process using a correlation maximum likelihood estimation particle filter algorithm. We propose an adaptive update strategy whereby the system saves a well-tracked model when no occlusion occurs, and then uses this saved model to replace poorly tracked models in the event of occlusion. Furthermore, we consider the scale variation and adjust the target size according to the depth image, but we leave the HOG feature vector dimension of the target area unchanged. Thus, the problems such as model offset, scale variation, and loss of features are corrected over time. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed target-tracking algorithm can detect target occlusion and track targets well, requires fewer calculations to perform target prediction- tracking-optimization-redetection, reduces the impact of illumination changes, and achieves better real-time performance and accuracy than many existing algorithms.

To solve the poor real-time performance of the existing fault diagnosis algorithms on transmission system rotating components, this paper proposes a novel high-dimensional OT-Caps (Optimal Transport–Capsule Network) model. Based on the traditional capsule network algorithm, an auxiliary loss is introduced during the offline training process to improve the network architecture. Simultaneously, an optimal transport theory and a generative adversarial network are introduced into the auxiliary loss, which accurately depicts the error distribution of the fault characteristic. The proposed model solves the low real-time performance of the capsule network algorithm due to complex architecture, long calculation time, and oversized hardware resource consumption. Meanwhile, it ensures the high precision, early prediction, and transfer aptitude of fault diagnosis. Finally, the model’s effectiveness is verified by the public data sets and the actual faults data of the transmission system, which provide technical support for the application.

Whether a polymorphic transition exists in high entropy alloys or not remains unclear since discovery of these alloys more than a decade ago. Here authors report an irreversible polymorphic transition fromfcc to hcp in the prototype FeCoCrMnNi high entropy alloy and provide evidence for fccphase being more stable than hcp phase only at high temperatures.

In our study, we designed the PbSnTeSe high-entropy alloy (HEA) and investigated its microstructure and thermoelectric properties. It was found that the PbSnTeSe HEA has a simple face-centered cubic structure and possesses quite low lattice thermal conductivity at low temperatures, which could be ascribed to the strong phonon scattering due to its severe lattice-distortion. Minor additions of La not only enhanced both Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity at high temperatures, but also suppressed the bipolar effect to some degree. Our results indicate that the HEA concept could be applied for developing promising thermoelectric materials, which merits further investigation.

The body-centered cubic (BCC) Ti15Zr15Nb35Ta35 high-entropy alloy showed superconducting behavior at around 8 K. The electronic specific heat coefficient γ and the lattice specific heat coefficient β were determined to be γ = 9.3 ± 0.1 mJ/mol K2 and β = 0.28 ± 0.01 mJ/mol K4, respectively. It was found that the electronic specific heat Ces does follow the exponential behavior of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. Nevertheless, the specific heat jump (ΔC/γTc) at the superconducting transition temperature which was determined to be 1.71 deviates appreciably from that for a weak electron-phonon coupling BCS superconductor. Within the framework of the strong-coupled theory, our analysis suggests that theTi15Zr15Nb35Ta35 HEA is an intermediate electron-phonon coupled BCS-type superconductor.

The Ganjiang River has abundant fish resources, which plays a significant role in maintaining and replenishing the fish resources in Poyang Lake and the Yangtze River, and contains important habitat for migratory fish. However, fish diversity has rapidly declined in the Ganjiang River, especially migratory fish. In this study, 107 fish species (including 43 Chinese endemic species) were found in the middle and lower reaches of the Ganjiang River. However, only 91 fish species were found in the main channel of the Ganjiang River, which was lower than the 108 fish species historically found there. According to the Chinese Red List, 85 Least Concern, two Critically Endangered, three Vulnerable, one Near Threatened and 16 Data Deficient fish species were found in the Ganjiang River. In addition, the species number, diversity and CPUE in the channel were all greater than in the reservoir. The Bray-Curtis resemblance matrix and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) showed that the habitats of the Ganjiang River were divided into three areas. The analysis of RDA showed that turbidity, dissolved oxygen and water depth significantly affected fish distributions and assemblage composition. These results indicated that dam construction and other human activities have seriously destroyed the fish habitat and led to the decline in fish diversity. Therefore, the conservation of fish has become urgent in the Ganjiang River, and an integrated management plan should be developed and effectively implemented.

Biomphalaria straminea is an invasive species in China and is one of the intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni which results in the spread of schistosomiasis. Herein, we firstly report the complete mitochondrial genome of B. straminea. The full length of the mitochondrial genome is 13,652 bp. It consists of 37 typical animal mitochondrial genes, comprising 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. The contents of each base in the complete mitochondrial genome are 33.28% A, 42.01% T, 10.85% C, and 13.87% G, with a high A + T content of 75.29%. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the relationship of B. straminea and Biomphalaria tenagophila was more closed.

The Yangtze River drainage in China is among the most species rich rivers for freshwater mussels (order Unionida) on Earth with at least 68 species known. The freshwater mussels of the Yangtze River face a variety of threats with indications that species are declining in abundance and area of occupancy. This study represents the first analyses of the genetic structure and diversity for the common and widespread freshwater mussel Nodularia douglasiae based on microsatellite DNA genotypes and mitochondrial DNA sequences. Phylogenetic analysis a fragment of the COI mitochondrial gene indicated that N. douglasiae collected from across the middle and lower Yangtze River drainage are monophyletic with N. douglasiae from Japan, Russia, and South Korea. The results of the analysis of both the mtDNA and microsatellite datasets indicated that the seven collection locations of N. douglasiae in the middle and lower Yangtze River drainage showed high genetic diversity, significant genetic differentiation and genetic structure, and stable population dynamics over time. Moreover, we found that the connections among tributaries rivers and lakes in the Yangtze River drainage were important in maintaining gene flow among locations that N. douglasiae inhabits. An understanding of the genetic structure and diversity of a widespread species like N. douglasiae could be used as a surrogate to better understand the populations of other freshwater mussel species that are more rare in the Yangtze River drainage. At the same time, these results could provide a basis for the protection of genetic diversity and management of unionid mussels diversity and other aquatic organisms in the system.
